Dishing Up Success: Etiquette Dinner 2011
Written by Brittany Naas
Setting a table, folding napkins, helping a woman with her chair…. Few of the many things that were presented during this year’s Etiquette Dinner, which took place on February 28th, 2011. The Columbia Room was filled with students eager to see what proper techniques should be used during an interview or meeting held during a meal. Each student went through the steps while enjoying a four course dinner. This opportunity allowed students to grasp how to present themselves to future employers. Our speaker, Mindy Lockard, is a nationally rec-
ognized etiquette expert and the founder of Mindy Lockard Gracious Living. Studentsand staff who attended the event raved about her upbeat personality and ability to hold their attention. Student evaluations showed this event was a success and walked away with skills they will use in their futurecareeraspirations.
Part of what makes this dinner so great are our table hosts, WOU faculty and staff who volunteer to help students feel comfortable and guide conversation through this event. Thank you, to all who helpedout!
Justice Was Served... at the Criminal Justice & Government Services Fair
The Oregon Room was bustling with WOU students and high school students who came to talk to the 18 different employers who were on campus for the March 2nd Criminal Justice and Government Services Career Fair. Employers who were hiring for full-time and internship positions included the Marion County District Attorney’s Of-
fice, the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation, The Benton County Sherriff’s Office, the FBI, Oregon State Police, and the US Marine Corps, just to name a few! This was a great opportunity for students to talk with the recruiters, learn about job opportunities, and get a look into some career paths! Thank you to Admissions and the Criminal Justice Department for helping SLCD with this amazing event!

SERVICE LEARNING
Students In Service
Students in Service (SIS) is a part-time AmeriCorps program which encourages and supports college students in their efforts in providing valuable service to the community. SIS members make a difference in their communities, learn valuable skills, and earn an education award while doing so. Each SIS member has to complete 300 hours of service in one full year in order to earn a $1, 132 educational award. This year WOU was given 45 spots to fill in September. By December, we had filled all our spots and had students working at various community organizations. Overall, in the time that WOU has been a part of the SIS program, $117,000 have been awarded to students in total. If you are interested in knowing more about this program, please look for more information in September 2011 when we kick the program off again with new spots!
Winter Term Service Day
On February 19, 2011, the Spring Alternative Break participants had the opportunity to work for Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that builds home that are simple, decent and affordable for low-income families. Currently, there is a building going on in South Salem that WOU students were able to participant in. Students helped in a variety of ways from digging a trench behind a retaining wall to moving gravel and dirt to various areas around the house to some student putting on siding on the exterior of the house, along with cleaning up after construction. Overall, WOU students did not hesitate to get their hands dirty and dig in to help. Their efforts were greatly appreciated by the staff of Habitat, and were told that they made a difference in completing the home.

TWO UPCOMING CAREER DEVELOPMENT FAIRS
FIRST AVENUE CAREER & GRAD SCHOOL FAIR
The Annual First Avenue Career & Grad School Fair will be on April 1st, a Friday, at the University of Portland Chiles Center! Events begin at 11 AM, and the fair itself starts at 12 Noon. This year we are so excited to host a variety of recruiters, from more than 150 organizations! Graduate Schools will also be part of the fair, including WOU’s own Grad Programs.
The Fair will feature two panels for students to attend. Presenters include HR representatives talking about job search success, and graduate schools discussing the process of applying to graduate programs. We will also host an area for students to network with alumni during the fair!
