WESTERN MENNONITE SCHOOL EARTHQUAKE EMERGENCY PROCEDURES I.

Faculty/Staff Instruction and Guidelines Instructions and guidelines are to be covered in a Faculty meeting annually. (Handouts)

II.

Review Procedures Each teacher/dorm leader reviews procedures at least once per semester with students he/she is responsible for.

III.

Staff Assignments during and following Earthquake Emergency (updated annually)  School Administrator/Secretary/Dorm Director - Give warning on All Call, “Earthquake. Take cover.”  Ray Nussbaum - shut off Ad building furnace and propane tank.  Facilities Manager and Assistant - shut off propane, electricity, water, furnaces, as necessary (by regions). Responsible for Auxiliary lighting if necessary.  Liz Dillow - seal off all chemical storage as much as possible.  Kitchen Staff - only authorized personnel to enter refrigerated areas of kitchen and dispense food/water in cafeteria.  Office Staff and Dorm Personnel - responsible for total head count in Assembly area.  Howard McBride - in charge of First Aid station.  Dorm Director, Dorm Leaders and others as needed - attend to injured and assist in First Aid Station.  Middle School Director - attend to emotionally distraught in Assembly area.  Administrators/Dorm Director - determine safe evacuation routes and give commands for evacuation by PA or in person.  Transportation Coordinator - in charge of planning/organizing transportation of students with school vehicles if necessary.

Response Action to Earthquake by Areas (see FEMA Instruction) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Gymnasium - take immediate cover in the foyer; kneel and cover away from glass doors. Immediately following quake seal off main gym due to possible damage and asbestos danger. Practice Gym - move to interior walls and take cover or exit through south doors to gravel parking lot. Chapel Auditorium - immediately kneel down between the benches. (Pray!) Chapel Classrooms - take cover under tables or desks. Music Practice Room - move to interior walls and take cover. Dorms - move to doorways or under desk. Middle School - take immediate cover under tables or desks. Shop Areas: a. Classroom - take cover under drafting tables. b. Wood Shop - exit immediately out sliding door to lane area. c. Mechanical area - exit immediately out double doors to lane area.

Administrative Building: a. Classrooms - take cover under tables or desks or along interior walls away from the glass windows. Avoid any walls with shelving units. b. Science Room - take cover under tables and evacuate as immediately as safe (without command from Administration) due to chemical danger. c. Offices - take cover under desks and away from windows.

9. Kitchen/Cafeteria: a. Kitchen - take cover near exterior walls, under counter, or in doorways. b. Cafeteria - take cover under tables or along walls away from the glass windows. V.

Evacuation Procedures  Wait for command from designated personnel (except science room).  Generally fire evacuation pattern will be followed unless paths are blocked. ASSEMBLY AREA  All personnel will assemble in the quad area between the gym and the fountain, for a total head count. FIRST AID  Injured will be transported to the Fellowship Room which is the designated treatment area. Supplies will be kept in the office supply room. RE-ENTERING BUILDING  Buildings will not be re-entered without authorization from Administration or Facilities Manager until deemed safe by the proper authorities if serious damage is sustained.

Long Term Procedures (in case of blocked roadways) To be announced: - use of restroom facility - water rationing - electricity needs - food prep and distribution

VII.

Safety Precautions  Remove heavy items from top of shelves or high shelves in classrooms and dorm rooms.  Keep hallways cleared (dorms and ad building).
