LETTER

FROM THE CEO There are three things we all should do every day. Firstly, number one is laugh. Secondly is to think, we must spend some time in thought to reflect. Finally, we should be emotional about the game of rugby, and our team the Western Force. If we do that each day, we are going to have something special. Last Friday night, I personally celebrated with a smile and a laugh at the superb personal performance of Ollie Callan in the first half of the game with the Highlanders. Ollie is a homegrown talent from WA, and to win the Force Man of the Match after only one half of rugby illustrates what a dominant display he produced. Then, I spent the rest of the night thinking about how many more Ollie Callan’s are out there in WA community rugby. With the Force Fortescue Academy, our goal is to consistently develop WA players into Super Rugby players playing for the Western Force. Then there’s the emotion of Jackson Pugh’s selection to represent the Western Force against the Chiefs this weekend. It’s fantastic to see

yet another great homegrown talent earning his first start for the club, one he has dreamt about since he was a child. Rugby is the game played in heaven, and we have to make this special in WA for our Members and fans. See you all Saturday for our final home game of the season, and to celebrate Member Recognition Round!

MATCH PREVIEW

The Rugby Wrap podcast, hosted by Mitch Hardy, Heath Tessmann and Mick Colliss

Toni Pulu makes a break during Round 3, Super Rugby Trans-Tasman, McLean Park, 2021

The great thing about sport. Upsets happen, and those who dare to dream often find their wishes coming true. By picking up a bonus point win over Moana Pacifica on Tuesday night, the Western Force has every chance of making the Super Rugby Pacific finals next week. They need to beat the Hurricanes on Saturday night and Rebels need to win, it’s that simple. If they come away with the win, every West Australian rugby fan will be cheering for the Rebels to knock over the Highlanders on Sunday. Victory against the 5th placed Hurricanes won’t be easy. They are a classy outfit with a sprinkling of genuine superstars in their squad, from Dane Coles at hooker through to TJ Perenara at 9. Like all New Zealand sides, they love to counter-attack, so the Force will need to treasure possession. If the Hurricanes don’t have the ball, they can’t score points. The Force needs to kick cleverly, be clinical with their execution, and play the game in 8

the Hurricane’s half. We saw how dangerous Reesjan Pasitoa is when given front-foot ball, Tim Anstee is in great form, and Manasa Mataele is a threat every time he gets his hands on the pill. Nothing is impossible! One thing the Force will need to do is keep a lid on the emotion. There are retirements and other players leaving the Force. Importantly, it’s Tim Sampson’s final game as coach in the regular season. They’ll all be aware of it. They need to harness their personal feelings and play like there’s no tomorrow, because if they lose, there won’t be. Veteran trio call time on careers With over 400 games of Super Rugby experience to their names, the Western Force can confirm that storied veterans Jeremy Thrush, Richard Kahui, and Greg Holmes will be retiring at the end of the season.

Jeremy Thrush Thrush has been a Force fan favourite ever since making the move to WA in 2018 from Premiership side Gloucester (2015-18). The towering lock has been an ever-present figure at the Force in a transitional era for the club. The 12-time capped All Black has represented the Force in the National Rugby Championship (NRC), World Series Rugby, Global Rapid Rugby, and Super Rugby competitions over four seasons (38 caps). Revered as a player who gives his all for the jersey and his teammates, Thrush played a pivotal role in the Force’s 2019 NRC title win and has been an influential part of the squad with the club returning to Super Rugby in 2020.

Richard Kahui Kahui has been a household name since his eye-catching performances on the wing during the All Blacks 2011 World Cup triumph. Forging a reputation as a versatile, powerful, and hard running centre, Kahui has made 14

97 Super Rugby appearances (31 for the Force) and earned 18 Test caps for the All Blacks. The former Highlander and Chief signed for the Force in 2020 after seven seasons in Japan with Top League side Toshiba Brave Lupus. Known for his physicality at both ends of the field, Kahui has become a crucial figure for the Force throughout his three seasons with the club.

Greg Holmes Holmes, who made his debut for the Queensland Reds in 2005 against the Blues, has enjoyed a fantastic career. The front rower has made 169 appearances in Super Rugby (27 for the Force), and earned 27 Tests for the Wallabies, including two World Cup campaigns in 2007 and 2015. Holmes joined the Force in 2020 from Exeter Chiefs after spending four years with the Premiership side and winning the Premiership title in 2017. The prop has proved a crucial member of the squad bringing invaluable knowledge and technique to the forward pack.

THE LEGENDS T a i M cI s a a c

A powerhouse of the front row with 52 appearances for the club and eight Wallabies caps, Tai McIsaac is a Western Force legend. Having represented the U21 Australia water polo team, McIsaac was 24 when he played his first game of rugby. The Gold Cost-born hooker with New Zealand heritage made his Super Rugby debut for the Queensland Reds in 2003 before signing with the Force for their inaugural 2006 campaign. McIsaac forged a reputation as one of the finest scrummaging hookers in the country and proved a vital member of the Force squad from 2006-2009. Amazingly, McIsaac played 52 of his Force matches without missing a game before retiring in 2009. During his time at the Force, McIsaac’s quality in the scrum, ball skills, and 16

work ethic saw him earn eight Test caps for the Wallabies after making his debut in a commanding 34-3 win over England in Sydney. McIsaac moved into coaching after calling time on his playing career. Following time in Japan with Honda Heat and Toyota Industry Shuttles, he returned to the Force in 2015 as an assistant coach and head coach of Perth Spirit before moving back to Japan with Toyota Verblitz. McIsaac has just finished up with Suntory Sun Goliath and has commenced a new role as the Director of Rugby for Southport School on the Gold Coast.

Alex Masibaka PATHWAYS

Having grown up supporting the Western Force with his family, recent debutant Alex Masibaka is living out his childhood dreams in 2022. The dynamic back rower has risen through the ranks at Swanbournebased Associates Rugby Club (Soaks), RugbyWA state representative sides, and within the Western Force Fortescue Academy to reach the big stage of Super Rugby Pacific. Masibaka made his Force debut in Round 11 against the Blues in front of family and friends at HBF Park after coming on to the field in the 64th minute.

The homegrown talent replaced fellow Western Australian Kane Koteka in the contest, as the Force mounted a thrilling comeback on an unforgettable night for Masibaka.

“It was surreal. Making my debut for the club is what I have been working towards since I was a kid going to all the Force games,” “My family have been with me every step of the journey, and I wouldn’t have got to this point without them — so it was extra special to make my debut in front of them in Perth. The Junior Wallaby relished the occasion, with the Force’s experienced players lending sage advice and encouragement ahead of the game.”
