LATEST: MOANA PASIFIKA RESCHEDULED game NOW announced

The Western Force will now play two games during the week of Round 15 with the resheduled game against Moana Pasifika kicking off at 3pm on May 24 at Mt Smart Stadium, Auckland. This comes after it was originally slated for Super Round, before the WA-based club were gutted as a result of COVID. At the time, the Western Force had medically reported considerable numbers of cases within the squad, which under Rugby Australia protocols means they are not available for selection As a result, the game will now be played as part of the final round of the Super Rugby Pacific regular season, kicking off proceedings on Tuesday before the Force return home to face the Hurricanes on May 28.

LETTER

FROM THE CEO Last Saturday night, the last 25 minutes meant the weekend was spent analysing a disappointing game below our standards. They’re a fact of life as a rugby player, coach, administrator, and supporter. We can’t escape this reality when we are so invested as supporters of a sports team. We know as a group we let everyone down, and we know we must do better. Trust me when I say that this group has spent the last three days analysing what went wrong. At 15-18, I thought that it was our night. We as a group at the Western Force need to learn quickly so that one bad night doesn’t lead to more. I recently came across a quote that I thought was perfect for the Western Force players and coaches who have beat themselves up about their mistakes, decisions, and play in the latter stages of the Crusaders game.

“Don’t place your mistakes on your head, their weight may crush you. Instead, place them under your feet and use them as a platform to view your horizons.” — source unknown

Tim Sampson and the coaches, along with the leadership group, have worked tirelessly this week to ensure the playing group remain in a positive state of mind and remain focused on the job at hand - fighting for a place in the finals. The players selected this week must focus on what they are doing in the moment this Friday against the Highlanders and put their learnings from last week into action. We need a big game this Friday to keep the season alive, and I encourage you all to get behind the players. It is a must win, and this will bring the best out in the group.

MATCH PREVIEW

The Rugby Wrap podcast, hosted by Mitch Hardy, Heath Tessmann and Mick Colliss After playing the best of the best in the New Zealand conference at home this past fortnight, the Western Force find themselves on the road again. The destination, Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin to take on the Highlanders. With just three points separating three teams all fighting for a finals spot, this has barnstormer written all over it. The Force will be burning from their second half showing against a red-hot Crusaders outfit last week. Fortunately, the beauty of rugby provides them with a chance to get straight back on the proverbial horse and right some of those wrongs while it still hurts. Forsyth Barr is one of the great stadiums to play Super Rugby in. Conditions are always perfect, no matter how horrible it is outside, the pitch is fast and The Zoo (the Highlanders student section) always makes sure the visiting team is made welcome. After losing their last two at home, the Highlanders have gone on to record away wins against the Reds and the

Drua. The core of those victories came from abrasive forward play unleashing potent backs such as Josh Timu and Thomas Umaga-Jensen. Upfront for the Highlanders a familiar face in Jermaine Ainsley will go headto-head with Tom Robertson in a battle to provide their 9s with a valuable clean ball. Both the Force and Highlanders have it all to play for, so there is no need for either team to hold back in what is shaping to be an all-out attacking affair. There is no better way to kick off this round of Super Rugby. Score predictor: The Force to spook the Highlanders into submission this Friday the 13th and keep their finals hopes alive.

THE LEGENDS Richard Brown

With 89 Super Rugby caps for the club and 23 Tests for the Wallabies, Richard Brown is undoubtedly a Western Force Legend. The powerful and versatile number eight, who could also play as a flanker, was part of the inaugural Force squad in 2006 and spent his entire Super Rugby career in WA after John Mitchell convinced the Queenslander to make the move across the country. Known for his unrelenting aggression, toughness and dedication, Brown was a crucial member of the Force squad from 2006 to 2013. Brown rose through the ranks of Australian representative rugby with the Schoolboys, the U21s at two IRB World Championships (2003 and 2005) and playing part in the World Sevens Series (2003/4). As one of the premier number eights in the country and a consistent presence in the 12

Force starting XV, Brown earned his first Test cap for the Wallabies in the narrow 24-28 loss to the All Blacks in 2008. The backrower went on to make 23 appearances for the Wallabies, with an ill-timed shoulder injury ruling him out of selection for the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand. In 2013, the foundation player announced he would moving to Japan to play for Honda Heat in the Japanese Top League, where he would go on to finish his professional playing career. Having made his mark as a passionate player with an exceptional work ethic, Brown embodied the club’s spirit each and every time he pulled on the Force jersey.

Spreading rugby throughout WA

The Southern Lions All Abilities senior team is the only specialised team in Australia for people with disabilities. The team was developed over five years ago after Andrew Ferry, a man with a disability and a love for Rugby Union, contacted the club. The ultimate goal is to build an inclusive club environment for all to enjoy the opportunity to play rugby and enjoy the sportsmanship that comes with our great game. Since forming the All Abilities Rugby team, Southern Lions have witnessed a positive shift in the confidence of their players on and off the field. We are excited to watch Perth Bayswater grow as they begin forming their own All Abilities Rugby team for the 2022 season.
