LETTER

FROM THE CEO Dear Western Force Members, Supporters, and Family, While we’re all disappointed the Super W game has been postponed, I wanted to first acknowledge the players and coaches outstanding efforts. This is a special group of players who continue to balance their rugby careers with motherhood, their families, study and second jobs. The sacrifices they make in order to play this great game for our club, represent Western Australia on the big stage and grow the women’s game is inspirational. As an organisation, we are working hard to further develop the women’s game and our ambition is to become the number one Super W team in Australia. We have made strides with reimbursement for costs and bonuses for selection and a win this campaign and I assure you that this is just the beginning of a very exciting time for women’s rugby.

This is a crucial clash for our men in our traditional Sea of Blue jumpers. It’s no secret that given the history between the two sides that this is an intense rivalry and we’re in store for another cracking game of rugby at HBF Park. Having reenergised during the bye week, Tim Sampson and his squad are raring to go and cannot wait to be back playing in front of the Sea of Blue once again. This is a massive game for both sides. I personally can’t wait for all the action and to hear your passionate support throughout the night.

Anthony J Lewis CEO, Western Force

MATCH PREVIEW

The Rugby Wrap podcast, hosted by Mitch Hardy, Heath Tessmann and Mick Colliss Having spent some time sleeping in their own beds, the Force will undoubtedly be up and about for this clash. If they win Round 8, they stay in touch with the top six of the competition. Combinations are going well for the Force, and a little bit of home support will go a long way to helping them put the Rebels to the sword.

This week, key match-ups will be the contest between Perth locals Kane Koteka and Richie Hardwick. Koteka was one of our best against the Brumbies a fortnight ago, but “Dickie” Hardwick likes nothing better than going at it

with his fellow West Aussies. The attacking ability of the Force is improving week by week, and the forwards will again be looking to lay a solid foundation at the set piece. The Rebels will look to Matt To’omua – who seems to be finding some form – to guide them around the park and Andrew Kellaway out wide to finish things off. THE LEGENDS Ben McCalman

With 92 Western Force appearances between 2010 and 2018, Ben “Big Dog” McCalman is, without a shadow of a doubt, a club legend. After making his debut against the Brumbies back in 2010, McCalman went on to forge a sensational Super Rugby and Wallabies career. Born in Dubbo, New South Wales, McCalman was a dependable and world-class number eight. His toughness, willingness to put his body on the line, and natural leadership qualities, ensured he became adored by the Sea of Blue. He spent his entire Super Rugby career with the Force and was named captain for the 2017 season. The powerful back rower enjoyed a meteoric rise to the Wallabies set-up making his Test debut the same year as his Super Rugby debut in 2010. McCalman earned 53 caps for the Wallabies, including appearances in the 2011 and 2015 World Cups. Who could forget his

heroic try-saving tackle against Wales at the 2015 World Cup in England! McCalman signed a flexible contract in 2015, allowing him to play in Japan for Panasonic Wild Knights and remain with the Western Force. He would make his final appearance for the Force in the 46-41 win over the Kings in Perth, with injuries bringing a premature end to a remarkable career. Following a pair of games for Perth Spirit in the National Rugby Championship and a Spring Tour with the Wallabies, McCalman moved back home to the family farm, where he continues to work hard! 13

JUNIOR MAALI

JobActivator partnership brings the Junior Maali program to life

The Western Force is thrilled to announce that JobActivator has strengthened its partnership by renewing a two-year agreement. JobActivator supports our Super W side and enables the introduction of the Junior Maali program. Having been an official partner for the women’s side in 2021, JobActivator continues its fantastic backing by investing in developing women’s rugby in WA. JobActivator is a powerful online jobs board and automated resume builder designed to promote the connection of job seekers with employers. More than just an employment marketplace, the Western Australian business supports individuals to develop the skills they need to thrive in the career they deserve. In association with JobActivator, the Western Force is offering all registered junior rugby players in WA the opportunity to experience Super Rugby Pacific games live and free of charge.

14

The Junior Maali Membership entitles players U17 to a membership pack and complimentary ticket to one home game during the 2022 season at HBF Park. As the club continues its mission to grow the game and engage the rugby community throughout Western Australia, the partnership with JobActivator represents meaningful progress. The driving force the team behind the team

Wayne Walden

Super W Head Coach Wayne is tasked to put together the best playing squad available. It’s not just about winning but assisting them in growing and succeeding as players and people. Seeing the development of the women’s game is a major inspiration.

Callum Payne

Super W Defence and Backs Coach Callum is excited by the opportunity to help empower young people. Of course, rugby skills are essential ‘to do the job,’ but sport also helps to build resilience and maximise players’ potential as adults and leaders.

Junior Kalepo Muna

Super W Forwards Coach Junior’s key focus is to create set pieces for the forwards along with helping them in the contact and ruck areas. Witnessing individual transformations and realising their potential as rugby players motivates Junior.
