LETTER
FROM THE CEO Welcome back to HBF Park to celebrate First Nations Round. It is our privilege and honour to celebrate the First Nations communities of Western Australian with you. Massive thank you to Nyoongar artist Darryl Bellotti and Force in-house Design Lead Cameron Jones for their fantastic work on our bespoke First Nations inspired jerseys that the team will be playing in against the Crusaders Having our home and away jerseys feature an Indigenous design this year is something we’re extremely proud of as a club and this week’s jersey is another opportunity to acknowledge the traditional custodians of Western Australia.
to play for the club in what was an unforgettable experience for the homegrown Associates junior in front of his family and friends. It’s moments like these that make our game so special. Last Friday night your Western Force were inspired by your passionate support, and the squad is determined to go one better and grab the home win. I’d like to welcome the Crusaders to WA, especially our Western Force Fortescue Academy General Managers, Chris Goodman’s brother, Andrew who is the attack coach of the Crusaders.
Last week against the Blues was the best atmosphere we’ve experienced this year, and I know the Sea of Blue will be lifting it to a new level this Saturday when we take on the Crusaders. Congratulations to young number 8 Alex Masibaka on his debut last week. Alex is the first player from the restructured Western Force Fortescue Academy program

MATCH PREVIEW
The Rugby Wrap podcast, hosted by Mitch Hardy, Heath Tessmann and Mick Colliss
With the Western Force keeping the Blues scoreless in the second half, and the Crusaders tripping up against the Waratahs, all the Aussie teams should be sniffing the blood in the water and going in for the kill. The Force have had some memorable wins against the Crusaders over the years and with the way the Australian teams have developed their “how to beat the Kiwis” blueprint, the focus this week needs to be on physicality, making the breakdown messy, line speed and taking the points when offered. We don’t care if the Force wins ugly. Breaking the duck at home is so important this week! Who the Crusaders have available, and who they roll out, will determine how the Force approaches the game. Shutting down the Crusaders’ ability to get front-foot ball will be key, so Bayley Kuenzle, Reesjan Pasitoa and the back row of the Force will be crucial in the mid-field. The goal-kicking will need to be on point and the Force forwards will need to put pressure on the scrum and lineout to disrupt as much Crusaders’ 4
ball as possible. The clean-shaven, tryscoring machine, Jeremy Thrush is key and Feleti Kaitu’u will be busy men on Saturday night. The Force can win this one and they should go into the game with confidence despite the disappointment of the narrow loss against the Blues. When you look at the competition so far, there are four or five matches that could have gone the Force’s way, so their position on the ladder doesn’t reflect what they are capable of.
Let’s hope this one is another of those memorable wins. Score Predictor Sitting on the fence. This one could go either way.

THE LEGENDS Cameron Shepherd
As the most prolific scorer in club history with 60 appearances and nine Test caps for the Wallabies to his name, Cameron Shepherd is a true Western Force Legend. The fleet-footed full-back holds the club record for most points and tries scored, with 370 points and 30 tries scored between 2006 and 2012. After starting his Super Rugby career with the NSW Waratahs, the Englishborn playmaker, with an elite kicking game, joined the Force’s inaugural squad in 2006. Shepherd’s pace and athleticism proved invaluable for the Force in its early years, with the skilful back scoring 121 points in the club’s first year of Super Rugby. He is one of three Force players to score a hattrick (2009 against the Brumbies). His exploits for the Force in 2006 earned him a place in the Australia 7s team for 15
the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and a Test debut for the Wallabies. Shepherd won his first Test cap off the bench in the resounding 34-3 win over England in Sydney. Shepherd went on to earn nine caps for the Wallabies, with a broken leg bringing a premature end to his international career in 2008. After seven seasons with the Force, Shepherd spent a year with Sale Sharks in the UK before ending his professional career with Honda Heat in Japan. Shepherd remains a crucial part of the Western Force’s proud history, with his dazzling displays and frequent try-scoring inspiring a generation of fans in WA. 15
FIRST NATIONS JERSEY 2022
The First Nations Round presents an important opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge the traditional custodians of Western Australia. Designed by renowned Nyoongar artist Darryl Bellotti, in collaboration with the Force’s in-house Design Lead Cameron Jones, the jersey features the powerful Maali (black swan) launching from the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River). The Maali is surrounded by grass reeds, which grow around the edges of the rivers and waterways in the south west of Western Australia. Each player number has an intricate version of the Maali at its base instead of the usual logo. Moving up to the back collar you can then see the Maali again in more detail. Finally, on the collar itself, are the Nyoongar words ‘Moorditj Maali’. The term Moorditj meaning strength or solidness, and the Maali being the word for black swan. With a clear emphasis on acknowledging the history of Indigenous culture within Western Australia, Bellotti said: “The Force may play here in Perth in Nyoongar country, but they are also representing the entire state, so I made sure to frame the design to show the four corners of WA.”
16
“So much of Nyoongar culture revolves around the water, it holds a sacred significance to it, so to involve the Derbarl Yerrigan and connect it to the Sea of Blue, the passionate and loyal fans, was fantastic. The water is the life source, much like the fans are for the club.” As one of 14 Indigenous players to play for the Wallabies, former Western Force captain and current general manager of rugby Matt Hodgson said: “I’m very proud to be part of a club that celebrates Indigenous culture in a meaningful and purposeful way.” “We stated at the beginning of the year that the jersey designs are just the beginning, and we are determined to continue to engage with the broader Indigenous community throughout WA in the years to come. We are on an exciting journey together and this is another step in the right direction.”
