MILES Located at the crossroads of Warrego and Leichhardt Highways, Miles is a welcoming stopping place for transport and traveller alike. Originally named Dogwood Crossing, Miles began as a teamster’s camp in the 1840s and its wide streets are a legacy of the time when bullock wagons turned here. One of the town’s biggest attractions is Dogwood Crossing @ Miles, an architectural delight housing an ‘A’ class regional art gallery, local library and information technology centre with public internet access. A popular feature of Dogwood Crossing is a comprehensive display of the towns social history.

Miles is a well-known wildflower centre with a history steeped in farming and agriculture. Every second year the town plays host to a month-long festival that celebrates and showcases the town and surrounding communities. The Beef, Bells & Bottle Tree Festival coincides with the anniversary of the Miles Historical Village & Museum and the beginning of the wildflower season, attracting many visitors to the town.

Dogwood Crossing @ Miles

Miles is home to one of the finest historical villages in Australia, where the history of the town comes to life. A feature of the Miles Historical Village & Museum is a historic streetscape made up of over thirty authentic buildings, including a bakery, bank, blacksmith’s shop, cafe and hotel.

The Historical Village also features an impressive lapidary display, shell collection and War Museum.

The township of Condamine is located 34km South of Miles on the banks of the meandering Condamine River, well-known for its excellent fishing. Condamine is a strong rural community with rich soils, superior grain production and many large feedlots.

Condamine is home to the famous Condamine or ‘Bullfrog’ Bell which hung around the necks of working bullocks to ensure stockmen could locate them when left to roam and graze. The history of the town can be found inscribed on the side of a large replica bell in Bell Park at Condamine.

Once a thriving metropolis, Drillham was closely linked to the railway. A railway weir on the creek provided water for steam locomotives and reminders of these times can still be seen by the creek and roadside. Grain crops, livestock farms and a strong visible history of railway activity give the community of Drillham its rural character. Today a variety of quality grain crops and some of Australia’s best livestock are produced here.

Condamine Bell Park

A short drive South of Condamine is Caliguel Lagoon a popular recreation spot for fishing, picnicking, boating and skiing.

The township is also famous for its Condamine Rodeo, a spectacular event held in October each year, attracting visitors from throughout Australia.

Dulacca was established in 1879 with the coming of the railway. The town’s name originates from a pastoral run called ‘Doolackah’, which is an aboriginal term for emu tracks.

The pastoral run was owned by F.N.Isaac who was part of Leichhardt’s 1847 expedition. Cattle and grain farming remain the town’s key industries today. Dulacca was also the site of the first push to eradicate the prickly pear, an environmental scourge of the region’s farming land that at one stage covered an area of fifty million acres throughout the state. A history of the town and its strong community contribution to the war can be found in Roy Henderson Park. The Dulacca Hotel, known as the Waterhole on the Hill, dates from 1908 and still operates today.
