Horsham Rural City Council,” Cr Smith said. “He will provide an experienced and steady hand as we move through the budget process and in the recruitment of a new CEO. “We are pleased he has agreed to return to Moyne and look forward to working with him again.” Cr Smith said he had spoken with each of Moyne’s directors prior to reaching out to Mr Brown. “Each decided it would be best for continuity within the organisation to bring in an external person to act as CEO,” Cr Smith said. “That way they can continue doing their important work without then needing to find an acting director.” Cr Smith said the process to recruit a new CEO would begin soon, in line with council’s policies and procedures.

Mr Brown will begin in the role from February 19 for a period of three months, with an option for a further two-month extension or until a new CEO has permanently commenced duties.

Dumping proves costly for Are-able THE illegal ‘dumping’ of rubbish and other broken and unuseable household items is proving costly for a local non-profit organisation. Are-able (formerly WDEA Works) is now facing a critical challenge and is appealing to Warrnambool residents to reconsider their disposal habits to safeguard the future of clothing recycling centres in the region. Overseeing these centres since 2017, areable has faced escalating challenges in recent times. Over the past year they have seen an alarming rise in expenses related to managing waste disposal at these sites. These mounting costs, as a non-profit organisation, pose a significant burden on both are-able’s operations and the local Warrnambool community. Paul Hughes, general manger of are-able Social Enterprises, said he was concerned by the level of ‘dumping.’ “The situation has never been this dire and we are deeply concerned about the impact of these unnecessary expenses on our mission and the Warrnambool community,” Mr Hughes said. The clothing recycling centres are clearly marked with guidelines for acceptable donations. There are also signs that state any items placed outside the containers was considered ‘dumping’ which is an illegal act. Are-able believes that lack of awareness of education is not the primary issue behind the problem. Additionally, the deliberate act of pulling out bags of donated clothes and toys,

tearing them open and leaving them strewn on the ground was “disheartening and irresponsible behaviour” that only adds to the mess. “We know that 98 per cent of the community does the right thing,” Mr Hughes said. “However, some people intentionally misuse these centres instead of using appropriate facilities like transfer stations.” He urged anyone who witnesses someone dumping items at these recycling centres to report the behaviour to police and record any vehicle registration details. “These clothing recycling centres are the last remaining options available to the community because other charitable organisaitons have already removed their off-site donation points,” Mr Hughes said. Are-able Community Clothing Collection, which offers employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities and manages these recycling centres on behalf of a third party, is also concerned about he burden placed on its employees who handle the dumped goods. “We must protect our staff; they work tirelessly to empty these recycling centres every weekday but when people use these these locations to dispose of their rubbish our team ends up cleaning the mess,” Mr Hughes said. “It’s a thoughtless act that jeopardises the sustainability of these facilities.” Only high-quality clothing, shoes, handbags and fashion accessories are accepted. Items such as books, toys, blankets, pillows or furniture should not be left.

Moyne’s quiet achievers recognised A COMMUNITY volunteer, an international sporting representative and a community running festival have been named as the winners of the annual Moyne Community Awards. Port Fairy’s Geoffrey Scott has been named Citizen of the Year, Grassmere’s Callum Bridge is the Young Citizen of The Year and The Port Fairy Marathon named the Community Event of the Year. Mayor of Moyne Shire Cr Ian Smith said each recipient had made significant contributions to their communities and were deserving winners. “Mr Scott has been in Port Fairy for 20 years and is involved in a range of community groups and organisations – everything from cricket and football through to the Lions Club, Theatre Group, Murray to Moyne and the Men’s Shed,” he said. “Callum is representing Australia at the Hockey 5’s World Cup in Oman. While honing his own skills through rigorous training, he is also nurturing the next generation of talent coaching younger players. “The Port Fairy Marathon might only be in its third year – but it has become one of the state’s premier marathon events. “Last year’s event had more than 1400 participants registered across the four events. The marathon is run entirely by volunteers – with more than 120 people coming together to organise and run the event.” Cr Smith said he was proud to be able to recognise the people and events who make a significant contribution to life of the community. “These types of awards are so important to showcase the exceptional efforts people make day-in-day-out to make our communities great places to live,” he said. “It’s important we recognise those contributions, so people know what they do is important and appreciated. “I congratulate each of our winners and thank them for their efforts to make Moyne Shire an even better place to live.” The event also included a citizenship ceremony to welcome nine new citizens, presentation of the Port Fairy – Belfast Lions Club’s James O’Neill award and a free sausage sizzle.

Earlier this week councillors voted to accept the recommendations of an independent planning panel which heard submissions into Planning Scheme Amendment C75 – known as Rivers Run Estate. The amendment will now be sent to Minister for Planning Sonia Kilkenny for her approval. Mayor Cr Ian Smith said the developer had proposed the amendment, which had been on public exhibition from December 16, 2021 until January 31, 2022.

“The community has had a chance to have its say on this proposal. “Both council and an independent planning panel have considered those submissions, and the panel has recommended it proceeded with changes the applicant made during the hearing.” The Minister will now have the final say on approval. Cr Smith said this was the third major planning scheme amendment council had adopted this term and follows amendment C70 – Rural Housing and

Trucks roll LARGE crowds gathered at Victoria Oval last Saturday to enjoy Koroit’s annual Truck Show.

Once again the show offered something for everyone, with a great display of trucks of varying ages and sizes along with a ‘truckies’ tug-of-war, foot races, classic automobiles and motorbikes.

The day also offered a range of market stalls with live music and children’s rides keeping visitors well entertained throughout the day. The afternoon program featured two spectacular bike show and the opportunity to have photos taken with TV reality show ‘OutbackTruckers’ star Glenn ‘Yogi’ Kendall. The tug-of-war proved a crowd favourite, with many people gathering to cheer on the four participating teams. Andrew Derham was awarded the Best Restored and Rig of the Show with his 1989 Mack truck while Jeremy Jardine finished runner-up in the Rig of the Show award with a 2018 Mack. Event organiser Graeme Morris said the day was “full of highlights.” “We were very happy with the number of highlights at this year’s show,” Mr Morris said. “As well as the trucks there was a truckies tug-of-war, bike jumping by professional riders Josh Burton and Ash Evins, children and trucks’ sprint races along with an appearance from Glenn Kendall from TV show, Outback Truckers.” Mr Morris said organisers were very proud to contribute some funds from the show to a different charity – with this year’s going to Breast Cancer Research Foundation. “We’re already looking forward to preparations for the 2025 show.”

Wannon Water launches ThirstAid trailer LOCAL event organisers are being urged to take advantage of a new initiative by Wannon Water aimed at reducing waste and promoting healthy choices.

The water corporation has launched its ‘Thirst Aid Station’, a 1,000-litre trailer available for loan to provide free water refills at major local events. The Thirst Aid Station will make its debut at this weekend’s Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic, offering hydration at the finish line of the 267-kilometre race. The trailer will then head to the Port Fairy Rail Reserve on February 17 and 18 for the Community Market and Port Fairy Marathon. The Thirst Aid Station complements Wannon Water’s portable free-standing drinking water points and 19-litre water coolers which have previously been available for community events. They are part of the ‘Water for Events’ program which delivers substantial cost and environmental savings for both event organisers and attendees. General manager corporate and community services Kellie King emphasised the program’s significance in enhancing community wellbeing. “This initiative reflects our commitment to go beyond water for strong communities,” Ms King said. “We aim to provide attendees with the option to easily refill their bottles and cups at events.” Recognising the rising costs of organising community events, Wannon Water is offering these resources to the community free of charge. “We want to enhance people’s health and reduce costs and plastic waste,” Ms King said. “ Considering the recent surge in the cost of living, bottled water prices in Australia have exceeded an average of $3 per litre of water, more than the price of petrol. “Producing bottled water generates 600 times more carbon dioxide than tap water, contributing significantly to litter at local beaches and in waterways.”

The ‘Thirst Aid Station’ is now available for use, free of charge, for community events. 2024E The Warrnambool Multicultural Festival played a role in testing the Thirst Aid Station last year. Multicultural Association president Daisy Ye said people were queuing up to refill their bottles. “It was heartening to see. Lots of kids were using the drinking tap on the back of the station,” Ms Ye said. “We greatly appreciate Wannon Water’s support in supplying water free of charge to the public at community

events.” The Port Fairy Folk Festival has enjoyed sustained support through the Water for Events program. Patrons have refilled their bottles with thousands of litres of water over the past few years, saving a huge amount of plastic waste. Thirst Aid Station applicants need to contact Wannon Water directly and provide at least eight weeks’ notice.

Celebrating his victory, McHugh thrilled fans on taken out the 2024 Australian Sprintcar McFadden faced early motor issues. Brock Hallett initially led but, amid fierce Mt Max with a few customary ‘donuts’ in the dirt Championship.

The talented 25 year-old thrilled racegoers at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway last weekend when he skilfully navigated heavy lap traffic during the 40-lap final. McHugh entered night two sixth on points but showcased his class against some of the nation’s top drivers to take the title, finishing ahead of Jamie Veal in second and Jock Goodyer third. The crowd witnessed plenty of action throughout the night, which began before the drop of the

competition from Veal and Goodyer, lost his position with 18 laps to go after an incident resulted in a DNF. McHugh showed unstoppable speed in the race to the chequered flag. Meanwhile, back in the pack, Jordy Charge also put on an impressive display, climbing from 10th to fourth. He was followed by Grant Anderson in fifth, just ahead of preliminary night winner and former Mortlake man (now a West Australian) James

before an emotional wing dance. “I’m absolutely thrilled, this is something I never thought I’d get (the win),” McHugh told fans. Saturday night also saw the running of the Victorian title for the late models. After some intense duels on the track, Callum Harper took out the title ahead of Brad Smith, who made his way from position 20 to position two. Peter Nicola, a former Victorian title holder, finished third.

Elite line-up for Port marathon

Entrants at the start line of the 2023 Port Fairy half marathon. 2024E

LAST year’s Melbourne Marathon winner Reece Edwards will be among the group of starters at this month’s Port Fairy event. The Port Fairy Marathon and Community Festival, to be held on Sunday February 18, looks set to attract an elite line-up of entrants. In just three years the festival has become one of the fastest growing in Australia. This year Port Fairy is excited to welcome Edwards, along with several other elite athletes, to the starting line. Edwards won the Melbourne Marathon in a cracking time of 2.14.35 and said he was looking forward to experiencing the Port Fairy event. “In my opinion, when it comes to small

towns in Australia, Port Fairy is number one,” he said. “I can’t wait to run a marathon in this beautiful coastal town.” Marathon race director Nick Grimmer said the Port Fairy Marathon was now among the fastest growing running events in Australia and is attracting elite athletes in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive field. “Port Fairy is getting a reputation for not only being a fast and flat course, but with our AIMs (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races) certification, elite runners can come here to run and qualify for the world’s most prestigious marathon events,” Mr Grimmer said. “We’re looking forward to welcoming athletes who have performed at the elite

level nationally and internationally.” This will include Port Fairy’s own Jason Daye, who has a PB of 2.26 and won the inaugural event in 2022, former local Ella MCCartney who ran seventh in the 2023 Gold Coast Marathon with a time of 2.36.43 and Melbourne-based Eliza Howard who ran 2.46.39 in last year’s Boston Marathon. Nick said while the event continued to attract elite athletes, it was a community running festival with distances for all runners. “We have everything from the marathon and half marathon to the 10km race and, for the first time, we are introducing a five kilometre event and a 2.5km all abilities event.” Starting and finishing at Railway Place, the course will take runners on paved

roads and footpaths around the town and adjacent beaches, running through the historic port of Port Fairy. The 2.5km event, which is great for families and young children, will take participants on the Port Fairy to Warrnambool Rail Trail (asphalt surface). The Port Fairy Marathon and Community Running Festival is an eco-friendly, all abilities, running event. Start times on February 18 will be as follows: Marathon 7am; half marathon 8am; 10km race 8.45am; 5km 9am and 2.5km at 10.30am. Entry fees apply and all participants are encouraged to register online prior to the day.
