Plea for nurses

RECORD high demand for qualified nurses across south west Victoria, with staffing shortages hitting particularly hard in aged care, has opened the door for training with almost guaranteed careers waiting.

South West TAFE’s Diploma of Nursing will again be offered as a free TAFE course in 2023, with regional health services saying capable graduates are virtually guaranteed a job as enrolled nurses (ENs) to combat the shortfalls.

The next South West TAFE intake for Diploma of Nursing students is set to begin in mid-2023, with both Warrnambool and Hamilton campuses to hold information sessions and zoom sessions in coming weeks.

Portland District Health (PDH) executive director of nursing, midwifery and aged care Ros Nagorcka said there were plenty of nursing jobs in the region and further afield.

“There are great career opportunities in nursing,” she said.

“Endorsed enrolled nurses are an integral part of our service, working in aged care, sub-acute, acute and theatre and we are constantly on the lookout for more staff.”

Ms Nagorcka said the TAFE Diploma of Nursing provided a great grounding for a rewarding career in healthcare.

“Once you have become an enrolled nurse, you can go on to become a registered nurse and the opportunities are endless,” she said.

South West Healthcare executive director nursing Gaynor Stevenson said nursing and healthcare as an industry was well and truly in the public spotlight due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The industry has gone through an enormous amount of change in a relatively short-time which has created

a number of new and interesting career paths and opportunities for people to explore,” she said.

“If you are looking for meaningful work that is connected to people and our community, is varied from day-to-day and provides flexible working hours, nursing is an excellent option.”

People and culture executive Sheron Cook said South West Healthcare was about to embark upon an exciting phase of development and growth with more than $400 million worth of redevelopment projects underway.

“This means there will be a steady supply of local jobs and opportunities for career progression in the years to come for ENs and RNs,” she said.

“Students will have increased access to state-of-the-art training opportunities and graduate work experience that is on-par with many larger health services, right here in the south-west.

“Demand for nursing graduates in healthcare and aged care continues to grow, and at South West Healthcare we will continue to offer opportunities to support working enrolled nurses to continue their education if they wish to become a registered nurse.

“Both ENs and RNs play a vital role in providing a balanced and diverse workforce and excellent care to our community.”

As a Free TAFE course, students can save up to $10,000 by enrolling in the Diploma of Nursing.

Information sessions will be held at the Warrnambool campus on Wednesday, April 19 or Wednesday, May 10 at 12.30pm and 5.30pm.

Zoom sessions will be held on Thursday, April 20 and Thursday, May 11, also at 12.30pm and 5.30pm.

Residents dig deep for kids

LOCAL residents have dug deep this year to raise much-needed funds for The Royal Children’s Hospital.

Last week’s Good Friday Appeal saw a record $23,061,320 raised across Victoria – with local residents and businesses showing their support.

The final tally board showed Warrnambool contributed an incredible $76,501 while Garvoc added $23,043,

Koroit $19,466 and Port Fairy $16,768.

From tin shaking to raffles, fundraisers and auctions, regional and rural Victoria raised a remarkable almost $3 million.

Penny Fowler, chairman of the Good Friday Appeal, praised the efforts of all volunteers and donors.

“Giving for the kids is what the Good Friday Appeal is all about and what big, generous hearts Victorians had this

year,” she said.

“The appeal continues to shine a light on the very best in our community and this year’s appeal was no exception.”

Ms Fowler said the hospital was incredibly grateful to communities all volunteers for digging deep to help ensure The Royal Children’s remains a world-class facility helping sick children and their families.

“It’s been wonderful to see tens of thousands of Victorians come together to generously

support the world-class facility that is The Royal Children’s,” Rebecca Cowan, executive director of the Good Friday Appeal said.

“We understand that it has been, and continues to be, a very challenging time for many and we send our heartfelt thanks to those who continue to give what they can to create meaningful change for sick children and their families, enabling the RCH to provide leading healthcare to those who need it most.”

Regional journalism vital

THE head of Australia’s largest independent newspaper association has welcomed the release of a landmark Deakin University report into the future of country papers.

Country Press Australia president Andrew Manuel said the Media Innovation and the Civic Future of Australia’s Country Press report should be seen as a beginning and not an end.

He said the report highlights the essential role local papers play in serving their communities and delivering civic journalism.

The Media Innovation and the Civic Future of Australia’s Country Press report has been a three-year Australian Research Council project, led by Deakin University, in partnership with Country Press Australia and RMIT University.

The report reiterates a parliamentary inquiry recommendation for 20 per cent of all federal government advertising expenditure to be allocated to regional and rural news organisations and highlights the need for a better understand of the role regional and rural newspapers play as well as the need to provide more support.

The WarrnamboolWeekly is a member of the Regional Media Connect.

“This is arguably the most comprehensive study of our industry ever undertaken and the report stands as a beacon for government, for policy makers and for the community to take the appropriate and necessary actions to ensure newspapers can continue to play such a vital role,” Mr Manuel said.

“The study was done across the most tumultuous time the media industry has experienced, and local papers remain such an integral cog in regional and rural Australia, despite the hardships we’ve all endured.

“The report defines regional and rural papers as essential services to the community, and better support from government, and a better understanding from government around this is an important next step.”

The study included a survey into attitudes towards local papers and the respondents’ likes and dislikes, as well as interviews and interpretive focus groups with news editors, proprietors and key staff within the Country Press Australia network of more than 200 mastheads located at sites across Australia.

The report calls for a review of the focus groups with news editors, proprietors and key staff within the Country Press Australia network of more than 200 mastheads located at sites across Australia.

The report calls for a review of the focus on digital reach in regional areas and the accompanying rationale, with questions about the effectiveness of digital over local media when it comes to engagement with regional and rural Australians.

It questions an obsession with digital reach among major advertisers and government and explains how local papers

are not designed to individually engage with millions of people, but their strength lies in their rich levels of engagement with the distinct local communities they are essential part of.

Mr Manuel said people living in country areas remain passionate and engaged with their local mastheads, and the report highlights the need to better support local news, and equally, the pivotal role and responsibility of country papers to communities scattered across the continent.

“Coming out of the pandemic, many publishers have reported a strong revival in their readership, underpinned by a focus on hyper-local and unique news that has been a common denominator of country papers since their inception.,” he said.

“We urgently need government to recognise the importance of our members in the local community and for governments to adapt the way they seek to engage our readerships, just as we have adapted our businesses during particularly the past few years.”

Mr Manuel said Country Press Australia members would continue to innovate and adapt their businesses, and seek ways to work together for a better media industry. He said the need for more effective government support and understanding would be crucial to the long-term sustainability of country papers.

Cannon Hill continues to divide

THE future of Warrnambool’s art gallery continues to divide the local community, with mayor Debbie Arnott urging residents not to “buy into innuendo and untruths.”

Speaking at last week’s Warrnambool City Council meeting, the mayor said she was disappointed the issue had “turned into quite a saga”.

“It’s such a shame that at this stage, the very, very early stage, this has become quite a saga,” Cr Arnott said.

“I would like to remind all residents that this is only an investigation, that’s it, no decision has been made and I strongly urge the public to allow the process to evolve and please, don’t buy into innuendo and mistruth.”

Council has come under mounting pressure from both sides of the debate since launching a feasibility study in 2021 which identified two possible locations for a new art gallery.

The first option being to build an upgrade facility on the existing site and the second option to build at Cannon Hill.

With an estimated build cost for both options (at the time of the study) of between $40 and $41.5 million, council has since come under fire from hundreds of opponents and proponents, with the issue seemingly dividing the local community.

A petition presented to council in October last year featured more than 5000 signatures (both written and electronic) objecting to the relocation of the gallery to Cannon Hill.

This was followed-up a month later by the release of ‘Hands off Cannon Hill’ stickers and, earlier this year, bright green t-shirts adorning the same motto. While hundreds of objectors have continued to voice their opposition, via social media and on-site

gatherings, a new petition has arisen over the past week which supports the Cannon Hill proposal.

The latest petition has already attracted more than 500 signatures, with several believing that if “sensitively done” this (Cannon Hill) would be an “outstanding site” for a new art gallery.

Some of the comments in favour of the Cannon Hill site include:

 If sensitively done, this would be an outstanding site for a new art gallery provided the community’s need to look across Lake Pertobe and the beach without entering the gallery is met, and if indigenous concerns are also addressed;

 This could be a world class destination.….where else is there an art gallery that looks out over the Southern Ocean?;

 Warrnambool is well on the way to becoming one of Victoria’s top regional creative hubs, and along with becoming a custodian of culturally significant works, a premier art gallery would be a drop draw solidifying the town’s standing as a must-visit destination;

 The Cannon Hill site is under-utilised and the views and location would make a stunning site for a gallery. It would connect town to the coast beautifully;

 Like we have seen with the new library, our community is deserving of fantastic public spaces;

 A larger Warrnambool Public Art Gallery at the Cannon Hill site with the planning proposal currently at hand is an amazing and inspired idea that would elevate Warrnambool’s standing as a leading community for culture in the area;

 Refusal of this opportunity is regressive and holds back the potential of Warrnambool to be an amazing cultural and tourist centre; and

Repair cafe open Saturday

NEED something repaired, replaced, fixed or mended?

Volunteers will once again be on hand tomorrow (Saturday) at the Port Fairy Repair Café to fix all those little jobs that many find either difficult or challenging.

The repair café is open on the third Saturday of each month between 10am and 12noon and while it is a free, volunteer-run community event, donations are always most welcome. Volunteer ‘fixers’ will be on hand to repair wonky wheels, screeching brakes, punctures on bikes; minor

clothing repairs such as taking up hems on dresses and pants or mending holes; mechanic repairs (mowers, sprinklers), IT problems (mobile phones, computer issues), jewellery repairs (broken clasps, shorten chains), knife sharpening and general household item repairs and more.

The repair café can be found at 5 Railway Place, Port Fairy. Bookings can be made at https:// events.humanitix.com/port-fairyrepair-cafe-event

If time slots are booked out, join the wait list in case of cancellations.

 We are now presented with the rare opportunity for a major public facility to powerfully connect the city with the ocean it sits beside. This is a legacy worth leaving.

According to council’s project timeline, a presentation of a draft business case and options for consideration will be presented sometime this month.

Should council agree to progress the proposal, a comprehensive ‘deliberative engagement process’ will be developed and actioned (otherwise alternative pathways will be developed to deliver a new Warrnambool Art Gallery) from May 2023 onward.

MP slams animal welfare priority

SOUTH West Coast MP

Roma

Britnell has condemned $1.25 million in state government support for rehoming animals.

Ms Britnell said she supported animal welfare but criticised the funding while $6 million for the “much-needed” Warrnambool-based residential rehabilitation facility ‘The Lookout’ remained without a funding commitment.

Ms Britnell’s comments came after Labor member for Western Victoria and Minister for Agriculture Gayle Tierney joined RSPCA Victoria this week to announce the further $1.25 million for organisations which provide rehoming services for cats and dogs.

RSPCA Victoria praised the funding as a much-needed lifeline as shelters across Victoria, including Warrnambool, have struggled to find homes for animals in care.

“RSPCA Victoria takes in more than 14,000 seized, stray and surrendered animals across our state each year,” RSPCA Victoria chief executive officer Dr Liz Walker said.

“The funding provided through this program is vital for helping us care for, rehabilitate and prepare these animals for their forever homes.”

Ms Britnell said the funding was “disappointing”.

“It is disappointing that the Andrews Labor Government can find $1.25

Beach access access works begin

million to rehome animals, but cannot find $6 million to establish a residential rehabilitation facility in Warrnambool,” she said.

“While animal welfare is important, human welfare should be Daniel Andrews’ top priority.”

Ms Britnell said a residential rehabilitation facility in Warrnambool was an urgent need which should be prioritised by the State Government.

“The lack of services in this region is forcing people to travel long distances or go without the help they need,” she said.

“The Andrews Labor Government cannot continue to ignore the needs of the South West Coast community.

“The Andrews Labor Government must get their priorities right and recognise the importance of investing in human welfare and fund ‘The Lookout’ in this year’s state budget.”

Animal welfare has been stated as a priority for the Victorian Government, which includes a record $18.6 million package to support animal care and protection in the Victorian Budget 2022/23.

The State Government has also made a push to modernise the Victoria’s animal care and protection laws through replacing the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Draft legislation on the new laws was expected to be released later this year for industry and community consultation.

THE skies may have opened but not even heavy rain could dampen the spirits of local musicians who gathered at Lake Pertobe last weekend.

As the old saying goes, ‘the show must go on,’ and that’s exactly what members of the Warrnambool City Band and Camperdown’s Lakes and Craters Band continued to do on Saturday morning.

A small but enthusiastic crowd braved the conditions to listen to an array of beautiful music, while umbrellas provided shelter for the band’s conductors.

The special concert was part of an array of events organised for the Easter long weekend across the district.

Book your flu shot today

WITH the 2023 flu season imminent, residents are being encouraged to have their flu shots.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Debbie Arnott and CEO Andrew Mason have both had their flu shots and are encouraging everyone to do the same.

According to the latest statistics from the Victorian Government, 18 people in Warrnambool have already contracted Influenza this year, compared with just one at the same time last year.

In 2022, a total of 239 influenza cases were recorded in Warrnambool.

“Our immunisation team is now taking bookings for children aged from six months to under five years of age, and I’d encourage parents and carers to get in touch with us to make a booking for their child to receive a free vaccine,” Mr Mason said.

“Everyone older than this is still encouraged to receive the vaccine via their GP, pharmacist or health service.”

People in the following groups are eligible for a free flu vaccine under the National Immunisation Program:

 All children aged six months to less than five years;

 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from six months and over;

 Pregnant women – at any stage of pregnancy;

 People 65 years and over; and

 People aged six months and older with medical conditions putting them

at higher risk of severe flu and its complications.

“For many years, we’ve known that a flu vaccine is the best thing you can do to help protect yourself, your family and the wider community from this potentially deadly illness,” mayor Debbie Arnott said.

BACKYARD SAND & SOIL

“It’s a busy time of year for many people, but I’d urge everyone to make getting a flu vaccine a priority. It’s quick, it’s easy and it will make a big difference.

“As well as a flu shot, good habits such as regularly washing your hands also go a long way to keeping everyone safe.”

To book a flu vaccine for children aged from six months to under five years, contact the Warrnambool City Council immunisation team on 5559 4855. Bookings for people aged five or older can be made directly with your chosen GP, pharmacist or health service.

Calling for all young creatives

YOUNG people with a creative flair are invited to show off their creations during the annual Port Fairy Winter Weekends Festival.

The Young Makers Market will showcase talented young people during the first weekend of the popular festival – held over the King’s Birthday long weekend.

Moyne Shire Council deputy mayor Cr Daniel Meade said the market would provide an opportunity for young creatives to share their talents to an audience of locals and visitors.

“We have some incredibly talented young people in Moyne and the Young Makers Market will be a great way for them to show off their skills and talents on a weekend when there are a large number of visitors in the region,” Cr Meade said.

“We’re looking for a range of stallholders to showcase their goods be it handmade gifts, arts or crafts, repurposed clothing, textiles, homegrown plants, veggies or herbs.

“So if you have a creative side hustle, get in touch and book a spot at the market and get some fantastic exposure for your skills and talents and make a bit of money as well.”

The market will be held at the Port Fairy Sea Scouts Hall in Bank Street on Saturday June 10, during the Port Fairy Winter Weekends Festival.

Stallholder applications are now open and will close on May 14, 2023.

More information and stallholder applications can be found at www.moyne.vic.gov.au/OurCommunity/Youth/ Young-Makers-Market-June-2023.

The Young Makers’ Market is an initiative of the Moyne Youth Arts Collective and funded through the Victorian Government FReeZA program.

Fun on the water

LAKE Pertobe proved a popular spot for activities both on and off the water over the Easter long weekend.

Boat rides were one of many activities chosen by locals and visitors to Warrnambool, including Chloe Phillips and nine-year-old Scarlett Earles who enjoyed a pedal on Saturday morning.

The pair were among hundreds who flocked to the region to enjoy a host of events.

Not even the wet weather could dampen the spirits of holiday goers.

“We’ve had a great time in Warrnambool, there’s so much to see and do,” Ms Phillips said.

Track race-ready

ALL eyes are on the skies in the lead-up to this weekend’s final event on the racing calendar at the Terang track.

The Terang and District Racing Club will hold its sixth and final race meeting for season 2023 this Sunday and club president Shane Scally is hoping for fine weather and big crowds.

“We’ve had an army of volunteers working hard to ensure the track and the surrounds are in topcondition for our final meeting this weekend,” Scally said.

“We’re pretty lucky to have the volunteers we do, now we’re just hoping the community will come out and support our final day of the season and enjoy what will no doubt be a great day of racing.”

Along with the on-track action, Sunday’s Terang Cup day will also feature Fashions on the Field and, for the younger race-goers, Kelly Sports.

The program will feature two benchmark 70 races and a benchmark 78.

“There will be something for everyone on Sunday; there’ll be plenty of food and drinks to keep people well nourished, we will have a big screen on course for the first time and the team from Kelly Sports will entertain the youngsters,” Scally said.

“We anticipate the final race fields will be released sometime Thursday and we’re confident it will be an eight-race meeting with quality entries throughout.”

Terang Racing Club track manager Daniel Lynch said the grounds were “looking beautiful.”

“We kept the water off the track last week because we knew the rain was coming over the long weekend,” Lynch said.

“We had about 30ml earlier this week so it was the right decision. It (the track) might be rated soft by Sunday but we will know more closer to the day.”

Gates are scheduled to open at 11.30am and buses will run from Terang to and from the racecourse. For more information visit country. racing.com/terang.

THE latest figures from the Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) have shown payroll jobs are beginning to show signs of increasing to pre-pandemic levels.

The data showed jobs rose 0.6 per cent in the month to mid-March 2023, following a larger seasonal rise of 2.9 per cent over the month to mid-February.

ABS head of labour statistics Bjorn Jarvis said the pace of payroll jobs growth in early 2023 was similar to growth in early 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The middle of March 2023 marks three years since the start of the pandemic and is the first March without impacts from pandemic-related business disruptions,” he said.

“Payroll jobs now sit 10.5 per cent higher than pre-pandemic levels.”

Most states and territories saw a rise in payroll jobs in the month to midMarch 2023, with the largest in the Northern Territory (up 2.3 per cent) and South Australia (up 1.1 per cent).

“All jurisdictions have seen growth in payroll jobs since the start of the pandemic three years ago, ranging from an 8.9 per cent rise in New South Wales to 13.4 per cent in Western Australia,” Mr Jarvis said.

In the month to mid-March 2023, 10 out of 19 industries saw payroll job increases, with the largest in education and training (up 5.8 per cent).

In mid-March 2023, two industries had fewer payroll jobs than at the start of the pandemic.

“Only the manufacturing and transport, postal and warehousing industries had less payroll jobs in March 2023 than they had before the start of the pandemic, at 0.3 per cent and 0.9 per cent lower,” Mr Jarvis said.

“The largest rises in the three years to mid-March 2023 were in the arts and recreation services and mining industries, up by 19.3 and 18.8 per cent.

“The growth in the arts and recreation services is notable, given that this industry saw some of the highest payroll job losses in the first months of the pandemic, falling by around 30 per cent.”

First home buyers phased out

LENDING statistics have confirmed a slow down across owner occupiers, investors and Australians looking to buy their first home.

Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) president Hayden Groves said the figures showed a decline in loan commitments among new home buyers.

“The value of new loan commitments for housing fell 0.9 per cent to $22.6 billion in February 2023 (seasonally adjusted) after a revised fall of 2.4 per cent in January, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS),” he said.

“New owner-occupier loan commitments fell 1.2 per cent to $15 billion in February 2023, while the value of new investor loan commitments fell 0.5 per cent to $7.6 billion.

“Housing finance has been in steady decline from the record highs in January 2022, with the total value of new loan commitments falling 33 per cent since then.”

Mr Groves said first home buyers remain hesitant with the rate of first home

ownership also slowing, down to 3.5 per cent in February 2023 after a revised fall of 4.6 per cent in January.

“Fears around future rate hikes, cost of living pressures, affordability constraints and inflated construction costs are major contributing factors to the slow-down in first home buyer activity,” he said.

“With rents increasing and rental supply so challenged, obviously one way we can assist with this is encouraging Australians out of rentals and in to home ownership.

The results coincide with the ‘NHFIC’s State of the Nation’s Housing 2022-2023’ report giving an analysis into housing demand and supply across Australia further highlighting the dire situation on the imbalance in the supply and demand of housing, and the consequences including inflated rents.

“The gap between supply and household formation has widened since last year’s report,” Mr Groves said.

“NHFIC now expects the cumulative gap between new household formation and new supply will be around -106,300 dwellings from 2023 to 2027.”

Facelift for hockey centre

THE Warrnambool home of Hockey South West received a makeover recently, ahead of the Hockey Australia national selection trials later this month.

A group of dedicated volunteers came together for a working bee to refresh the centre ahead of the selection trials over the weekend of April 2223.

Members were kept busy painting the interior of the pavilion, which was opened in 1985, as well as painting external fences which have stood for almost 20 years.

Over 50 elite hockey players and officials will converge on the South West for two days to select the men’s and women’s teams to represent Australia in qualifying for the 2024 Hockey5s World Cup in Muscat, Oman.

This will be the first time a national selection event has been hosted in a regional location. Hockey South West is in line to host the Victorian Junior State Championships in 2024 and 2025.

It is also well positioned to host practice matches featuring international teams in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games hockey tournament in Geelong in March 2026.

DARLINGTON Speedway will come alive this Sunday when it hosts one of three rounds for the Daylesford Speedway Association.

The Daylesford association was recently rocked by a tragic accident on-track, and will now see out its race season at Darlington.

The Mortlake Speedway Club has offered its racetrack, enabling the Daylesford club to see out its season and run its final three events at the Mid-Western Speedway. With the Mortlake and Daylesford executive committees coming to terms on how the offer could benefit both clubs, Daylesford club classes plus the standard saloons and junior 1200 sedans will be back in action this weekend.

Daylesford modified sedans continue their points battle for the season class champion, with Daniel Carter so far this season proving to be the benchmark of the class.

Ryan Daly, Ian Bartlett, Graham Smith, and Steven Warlond will all be trying to increase their points while keeping the pressure on Carter.

A victory could catapult somebody right up close to or even ahead of Carter.

Glenn McCoubrie, David Clark and Anthony Bull have continued to hit the track this season in Daylesford street stocks, and they will all be looking to increase their points over these final three rounds.

Last season’s class champion Chris Hay returns for competition on a track he is familiar with and could just sneak away with the victory.

Competition will be tough on Sunday in the street stocks.

A small field of Daylesford junior sedans have nominated this weekend, with numbers affected by drivers stepping up into senior class racing at the end of last season.

Blaize and Peyton Edwards will compete with Blair Botheras and Noah Basten on Sunday.

Ladies sedan action will again be competitive, with Richelle Warlond coming up against Shelby Higginbottom, Charmaine Bryans, Marlena Argent and Vicky Alford this weekend.

Richelle is looking to go back-to-back with victories, however any of the ladies will be capable of a victory.

Action hots up at Darlington

As always, standard saloon racing will be extremely competitive with the likes of Luke King, Nathan Hutchins, Greg Hutchins, Dean Pederson, Aaron Meakins, Jacob Head (a winner five weeks ago at Redline) and Rick Stowe all in the line-up.

Meakins in the best credentialed of the field, consistently winning qualifying races against the states’ strongest racers.

King is close to a feature race win looking at recent form and this will be a class to keep a close eye on this Sunday.

Junior 1200 sedans have a competing event the night before in Wangaratta and on the same day in Drouin this weekend, however the Daylesford club is enormously

proud to have a line-up, with every nomination a Daylesford member.

Arthur Hutchinson is the current number one driver in the state and Riley Taylor looks to be his strongest competition this weekend, with Holly Hutchinson, also gaining confidence and speed in recent race meetings, another to watch.

The canteen will be open on Sunday and entry is just $15 for adults, $10 for life members and aged pensions and $5 for children aged 10-17.

Children aged 10 and under will be admitted free. Gates will open from 8am, with competitors due at the track by 10am (pit gates will shut to competitors by 10.30am).

Racing will start at 11.30am.

With a handicap of 8.75m Layla was ranked a good chance of making the final of the ‘Change Our Game Womens Gift’ following her wins at the Warrnambool Gift, Ballarat (70m) and the Beachside Gift (400m) earlier this season.

Following an injury-prone 2021/22 season, Layla was hungry for success this year and went to Stawell keen to make her mark.

“I was absolutely thrilled just to make the final but to finish fifth overall; I was stoked,” the 17 year-old said.

“As a young child I ran little aths races at

the Gift and it was always a dream to run in a women’s final.”

While stress fractures in her foot limited her running last season, Watson said she managed to enter last year’s Gift just a short time after having a moon boot removed.

“I’d had a moon boot for about six weeks and when that came off I was able to get in enough training to enter last year’s Gift,” she said.

“I knew I wasn’t going to be amazing but I was just happy to get a run in. This year I was keen to do my very best and I just went out there wanting to run fast.

“And I did. I won my heat and the semi so to line up for the women’s final was amazing. My family and my training team were all there to spur me on which was so exciting.”

Watson acknowledged the history surrounding the Gift and said she felt honoured to now be a part of that.

“Stawell has such a long history with so many fantastic runners who have achieved amazing things over the years,” she said.

“Almost every runner has stories to tell about running at Stawell. It’s a runners’ grand final.”

From Grassmere, Layla trains with the DPS Stable in Warrnambool under the guidance of her long-time coaches Wayne Perry and Rob Duynhoven.

“I love the atmosphere of pro running and our squad has grown over the years to become my second family,” Watson said.

“With the running season now done, I’ll take a short break and then get back into training in preparation for the start of the

season again towards early October. “I’m always aiming to better my times, especially in the 400m which is my favourite event – my PB is 55.09 seconds.”

It appears the ‘fast running genes’ also extends to Watson’s brother, Aubrey.

The 16 year-old finished fourth in the final of the open men’s Bill Howard Handicap over 100 metres at last weekend’s Gift. Aubrey will compete in this weekend’s national titles in Brisbane where he has entered both the 100m and 200m events – and his proud sister will be there to spur him on.

“It’s great that we both share a love of running,” Watson said.

“Our parents aren’t really runners but they’d both claim we get our abilities from them!”

Table tennis to start

DO you enjoy playing table tennis and would like to enter a local competition?

The Terang Table Tennis season looks set to commence early next month, with games to be played each Wednesday night at the Terang Indoor Sports Stadium.

Terang is currently the only venue between Warrnambool and Colac to offer a competition.

Several new players joined the competition last season and organisers are hoping to see even more new faces – as well as returning players – this year.

The 2023 season will start with practice/seeding sessions at the Terang stadium from 7.30pm next Wednesday, April 19, with a second session planned the following week (April 26).

Anyone interested in playing competitive table tennis this year was invited to come along to these practice evenings where players will be seeded and placed into teams to make for an even competition.

The competition will run from May through to late August, with the possibility of a break during the school holidays.

This year games will be played on two new championshipquality tables and the nets have been updated through a grant received from the Corangamite Shire.

As games are all played on the one night, this is an ideal opportunity for all members of the family to play. Seeding enables all abilities to be catered for so beginners and players of all ages, from upper primary school aged through to retirees, are most welcome to join.
