Will Mary fly?

WILL Mary Poppins fly these school holidays?

To find the answer, make sure you head to Warrnambool’s Lighthouse Theatre over the next few days to watch Warrnambool Theatre Company’s latest production, Mary Poppins.

The show will open this Saturday, September 28 and will run over the next week – taking audiences on a magical journey through the streets of early 20th century London as the mysterious Mary Poppins takes the Banks family on extraordinary adventures.

For more than six months a cast of 50, orchestra of 16 and a crew of 60 has been working hard to create the magic of Mary Poppins for Warrnambool.

Featuring the magic and songs everyone will remember from the film, but with the added spectacle of seeing it live on stage, this production is sure to entertain audiences of all ages.

The talented Ali McLaren plays Mary Poppins, bringing a breath of fresh air to the stage.

A highlight of her performance is the opportunity to sing the iconic ‘Feed the Birds’ alongside her mum, Margy Jackson, who plays the role of Bird Woman.

The Mary Poppins story teaches us all that sometimes magic can be found in the everday, and with the people we love.

It’s all about a family connecting with each other again and discovering that love and magic is always around us.

The Warrnambool Theatre Company has been rehearsing at the magnificent Toad Hall which was recently refurbished thanks to the Gwen and Edna Jones Foundation.

‘Mary Poppins’ is directed by Rachel Pitt-Lancaster who is supported by Millicent Lee (assistant director), Elois Simpson (choreographer), Dean Mulholland (musical director) and Maria Carras-Kerr (assistant musical director).

Together they have produced a fun, visually stunning

Letter to the Editor

A thriving town

Dear Editor

Warrnambool is a regional powerhouse bursting with opportunity and warmth, and I thank this great town for its recent hospitality.

We have our nation-leading ‘The Orange Door (TOD)’ in nearly 60 locations across our great state.

Visiting Warrnambool TOD and being able to listen to workers and thank them for their important work was a highlight of my visit.

The Warrnambool Orange Door has a lovely, calm feel and reflects the caring and dedicated workers supporting people who have experienced violence in their homes, or those who have chosen to use violence.

The Orange Door can be contacted on 1800 271 180 or walk in at 571-575 Raglan Parade in Warrnambool.

It was also incredible to be able to visit the Budj Bim Aquaculture Centre.

What an incredible asset for this beautiful region.

This World Heritage Listed cultural treasure is set in such a beautiful landscape depicting the ancient innovation of the Gunditjmara people. The centre will bring a strong economic benefit to the region, drawing tourists to the region, not only from across Victoria but the world.

I also thank the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation for sharing with me their work across the south-west coast region.

I am looking forward to working with them as they continue to be strong advocates for the whole community.

And finally, a big thank you to the hardworking local MP Jacinta Ermacora for sharing all she loves about her community with me. I look forward to coming back soon!

Yours etc.,

Vicki Ward MP

Support available for farmers

AGRICULTURE Victoria is encouraging farmers to take up ongoing support and assistance to help manage current difficult seasonal conditions.

Agriculture Victoria’s Aimee McCutcheon said Agriculture Victoria continues to monitor conditions across the state.

“We know there’s been below average rainfall across most of Victoria during

autumn and winter and that it’s critical for cropping, livestock and dairy production,” she said.

“It’s important that farmers know that support is available to them to help make early and informed decisions.”

Ms McCutcheon said the Agriculture Victoria website explains what support is available to farmers, including financial support and assistance, mental health and wellbeing support.

“One example is the Australian Government’s Farm Household Allowance which is a fortnightly payment for eligible farmers,” she said.

“Our website also provides access to other organisations that can help, such as the free services from the Rural Financial Counselling Services and the National Centre for Farmer Health.”

Ms McCutcheon said Agriculture Victoria offers extensive practical information,

resources, tools and calculators to help farmers with forward planning, feed budgeting and livestock management.

“All these free resources are available online 24 hours a day, or you can speak with staff at your local office,” she said. Visit the Agriculture Victoria website at agriculture.vic.gov.au for more information plus details of events coming up in the region or online.

THERE was bright yellow as far as the eye could see at Merri River School last Friday.

The final day of term also signalled ‘R U OK? Day’ for staff and students, who were eager to dress in bright yellow and take part in a range of special activities.

Face painting, Minecraft games, donuts, fruit platters and biscuits were enjoyed while friendship bracelets, a disco, a photo booth, nail painting, face painting and a movie were also popular.

Painting an R U OK? banner also proved a popular activity while the highlight of the day, for many, was a staff versus students football match. With encouragement from team coach Ken Radley, the students worked hard all over the ground but were defeated by staff, 8.5.53 to 3.3.21.

Dressing in yellow proved a lot of fun for students Taponi, Wathon, Brodie, Justine, Charlie, Violet and Mel. 2024D

Beach Patrol heads to Portland

BEACH Patrol volunteers will continue their work across the district with a special trip to Portland early next month.

The group will spend Sunday, October 6 on the shores of Discovery Bay.

Last year 52 volunteers cleared more than 530 kilograms of marine plastics from the area and they anticipate there will be even more collected next month.

Beach Patrol 3280-3284 have had yearly bus trips to clean up Discovery Bay.

“Last year it was shocking to see the amount of rubbish on this beach and even though we removed so much, we felt like we only skimmed the surface of what was there,” group member Genevieve Bale said.

“Our members living in Portland have told us there is currently a considerable amount of marine debris on the beach so we’re looking forward to another big clean up in October.”

This year the group has joined forces with Glenelg Hopkins CMA, Aurora Surf, Cole’s Coaches, B alternative, Victorian Fisheries Authority, and Parks Victoria to carry out the bus trip. They are hoping to get as many volunteers as possible to participate on the day.

“Anyone wanting to volunteer should be mindful that they need to be pretty fit and mobile to take part as there are a couple of steep walks to get to and from the beach, as well as hauling what can be very heavy rubbish off the beach,” Ms Bale said.

“We have limited spots on the bus so bookings are essential.

“There will be pick up locations in Warrnambool, Koroit and Port Fairy and both lunch and afternoon tea will be provided on the day.”

Anyone wishing to take part should head to the group’s facebook page, scan the QR code and express their interest. Alternatively, email beachpatrol3280@gmail.com.

Election candidates announced

Warrnambool City will transition from an unsubdivided council to a seven-ward council at the October election.

The wards, which will each have one elected representative, are Botanic, Central, Hopkins River, Pertobe, Platypus Park, Russells Creek and Wollaston.

At the close of nominations earlier this month, there were the same number of candidates as vacancies in the Botanic Ward, Russells Creek and Wollaston wards.

In Botanic Ward, Billy Edis will be declared elected after voting closes on October 25.

In Russells Creek Ward, current mayor Cr Ben Blain will be re-elected unopposed.

And in Wollaston Ward, Richard Ziegeler is the sole candidate and will be declared elected.

Candidates for the remaining four wards are as follows:

Central Ward nominations:

Peter Sycopoulis and Debbie Arnott.

Hopkins Ward nominations:

Jim Burke and Willy Benter.

Pertobe Ward nominations:

Matthew Walsh, Peter Hulin, Jennifer Lowe and Leanne Williams.

Platypus Park Ward nominations:

Andrew Squires and Vicki Jellie.

Following the close of nominations and ballot draws for this year’s local council elections, 2231 candidates nominated for 646 council vacancies in 466 separate elections across the state.

The number of candidates this year is higher than the 2186 candidates who nominated for 622 council vacancies in 298 separate elections at the 2020 council elections.

Voting in this election will be done via postal vote. Ballot pack mail-out will begin on Monday, October 7, with voting to close at 12 noon on Friday, October 25.

The ballot pack will contain a ballot paper, candidate statements, a ballot paper envelope (to place vote in) and a reply-paid envelope.

All postal votes must be received by 12 noon on Friday, November 1 and election results will be declared on Friday, November 15.

More details on each of the candidates nominated for Warrnambool City Council will appear in next week’s edition of the Warrnambool Weekly.

Shearing again on show program

VISITORS to this year’s Warrnambool Show will be treated to a skilful display of shearing and wool handling.

The Jim Robinson Pavilion at the showgrounds will once again host the shearing and wool handling competitions and according to one of the organisers, Brooke Siegle, the October 26 event is shaping up to be another great one.

“Last year we had more than 60 entries across the divisions and we’re confident we can attract just as many, if not more, this year,” Brooke said.

“Entries are now open on-line, on the Warrnambool Show website, and will be accepted up until 5pm on Friday, October 25.

“We will accept a limited number of entries on show day, depending on sheep availability.”

Entries are invited in the open and senior wool handling classes along with open, senior, intermediate and novice shearing.

Some great prizes will be up for grabs in each of the divisions, with judges looking for both quality and speed from entrants.

“The shearing and wool handling competitions have become an integral part of the Warrnambool Show, with a long history of inclusion,” Ms Siegle said.

“We would love to see the event back to what it once was in the earlier days; big entry numbers and huge crowds packing the shed on show day to watch all the action.

“We’re very fortunate to have Nick Slattery from Woolsthorpe supplying sheep on the day and are always looking for sponsorship.”

The action will start at around 8.30am on show day and will continue throughout the day and into the early evening.

Anyone interesting in becoming an event sponsor, or would like more information, can contact Roger Mifsud on 0428 078 762.

Empowering women for solo driving MOTORING

AS the holiday season fast approaches, our thoughts turn to new adventures over the festive season.

While some families look forward to trips interstate or overseas, others prefer to plan a ‘road trip’ to explore the wonders of Australia’s great outdoors.

And for some women, this means planning a solo trip for some much-needed rest and relaxation.

But driving solo (particularly at night or in unfamiliar areas) can be a little daunting for some.

While driving alone offers a huge sense of freedom, it can also come with its own challenges; particularly for women or others feeling a little vulnerable (especially after dark).

Whether travelling by day, by night or exploring new destinations, it is imperative that women feel safe when driving alone.

Before heading off solo, make sure your vehicle is reliable and well-maintained to avoid unexpected issues.

Regularly check your car’s brakes, tires and lights – or

have a mechanic or someone like minded do this for you.

Always have an emergency kit inside your vehicle which includes a first aid kit, a flashlight and some tools.

Make sure your vehicle’s spare tyre is fitted and in good condition.

Water, non-perishable snacks and a warm blanket can also come in handy in the case of an emergency.

Make sure valuables are well hidden when you leave your vehicle and invest in a quality car alarm if yours isn’t fitted with one.

Before heading off on your solo trip, plan your trip in advance and the route you will take – identify safe places to stop for fuel and rest.

Planning will not only save you time but it also may save you from getting lost in unfamiliar areas or areas where you may feel unsafe.

When stopping for a break, always chose well-lit parking spots preferably in high traffic areas.

Always stay alert to your surroundings, both when out of your vehicle and when driving.

Keep a safe distance from other vehicles and keep your doors locked and windows up, especially in slow-moving traffic or at stoplights.

Stay aware of your environment and trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy, leave the area immediately.

Avoid sharing that you are traveling alone or divulging too many details about your itinerary to strangers.

Before leaving home, make sure you tell family or a trusted friend about your travel plans and any updates.

Exploring our great country can be rewarding and exciting – but always put safety first; your friends and family want you home safe to share your experiences and stories with them.

Regularly checking-in can provide peace of mind for your loved ones.

Driving by yourself as a woman can be safe and enjoyable with the right precautions.

By taking proactive steps to prepare, plan, and protect yourself, you can confidently embrace the independence that comes with solo travel.

TYPES OF SONG

Maddie heads to Queensclif f

TALENTED Warrnambool artist Maddie Jackway will perform at this year’s Queenscliff Music Festival.

The annual festival has been running since 1997 and this year will be held over the weekend of November 22-24.

The three-day musical and cultural event continues to attract upwards of 10,000 visitors to the site, nestled among the ancient, towering cypress trees in Lower Princess Park.

The festival will once again feature a stunning line up of talented musicians and singer/song writers all keen to share their music with audiences of all ages.

Warrnambool’s own Maddie Jackway will make her first appearance at the Queenscliff event.

Since the release of her debut EP, ‘What is This Freedom?’ in May 2020, Maddie has been busy establishing herself on the music scene.

Among her growing list of accomplishments, she has been a commissioned songwriter in the biannual Art and Industry Festival (Melbourne), has opened for Alex Lahey and The Smith Street Band on The Push All Ages Tour (Warrnambool leg) and in the same month performed as a billed artist at the 2022 Port Fairy Folk Festival.

In 2023 she returned to Victoria University as the Artist in Residence where she created and co-produced her sophomore EP. Maddie marries introspective folk storytelling with catchy pop hooks and soulful vocals to create a union that is uniquely hers.

She has been described as an artist who creates music for ‘overthinkers’ and deep-feeling individuals, with an authenticity and earnestness that is hard to ignore.

Her vocal mastery captivates audiences in both recordings and live performances, drawing them into her world.

“I’ve always said that I won’t be boxed into one genre and you can hear all of my different influences in the body of my recent work,” Maddie said.

Her new EP, Kindred, is a blend of pop-soul-folk with elements of R&B.

Warrnambool’s Maddie Jackway will perform at the Queenscliff Music Festival in November. 2024E

Podium finish for Relph

WARRNAMBOOL’S Tayla Relph has ridden her way through to her very first world championship podium finish.

Twenty-seven year old Relph, who calls Warrnambool home, finished third at last Sunday’s FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship event in Italy.

Tackling the Cremona Circuit on the weekend, a determined Relph showed great resilience and patience as she made her way through the field from ninth.

Relph told journalists she was “speechless” following her podium finish.

“I made a horrible start and was down in ninth, I think, going into turn one but I knew I had good pace and I pushed hard, moving up to fifth before a crash in front,” she said.

“When I crossed the line I still didn’t know that I had a podium but when I saw my fiancé cheering I then realised where I’d finished.”

Relph reportedly said she knew it would be tough going to the championship and competing against world-class athletes, but was thrilled to have finished top three.

“I knew I could be strong here at Cremona and we did it! I have great people around me so a big thankyou to everyone who supports me.”

The World WCR season continues on October 13 at Estoril before the season finale at Jerez the following weekend.
