Locals share excess produce

THERE is nothing tastier than home-grown produce.

Growing fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers in your own back yard is not only satisfying, it can be extremely rewarding – just ask the growers all around Koroit who gather regularly to swap ideas (and produce).

The Koroit Produce Swap is a thriving community event, held monthly in the town’s theatre, which gives growers the opportunity to share their produce with others.

The ‘swap’ group offers the perfect solution for residents in need of fresh produce, and for those with excess, to come together – and all at no cost.

“Particularly these days with living expenses on the rise and many people battling from week-to--week, it’s nice to know that we can share our excess produce with others,” member Loretta Gurnett said.

“And perhaps we may even pick up something for ourselves that we may need that we don’t grow in our own yard.”

With the assistance of Permaculture South West Victoria, the group is able

to meet for an hour once a month, alternating between Saturday and Sunday sessions, with fortnightly sessions earlier in the year.

The next session will be this Sunday, September 3 from 10am.

“Everyone is welcome to come along, just bring your excess produce and enjoy the morning,” member Cass Carroll said.

“There is a donation tin in the foyer and we appreciate any contributions towards the cost of hiring the space.

“It’s really abit like a pot luck party – you never know what goodies you will find.”

As well as fresh produce, the next three months will also follow a designated theme.

“October 7 we will also include a house plant swap, November 5 will be a dahlia tube swap and December 2 will include wreath making so that all sounds exciting,” Ms Carroll said.

Anyone wishing to join the produce swap group is welcome to turn up at the Koroit Theatre tomorrow (Saturday) at 10am.

Cash boost for local events

THE Moyneyana Festival, Koroit Irish Festival and Koroit Truck Show are just three of 24 festivals and events across Moyne Shire to receive funding in the latest round of grants.

The recipients will share in more than $100,000 in grant funding, announced at last Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Councillors voted in favour of the $104,320 distribution to event organisers across the shire.

Among the recipients, both the Moyneyana Festival and Koroit Irish Festival were allocated $8000 each while the Koroit Agricultural Society (for the truck show) $5000.

Also listed among the grant recipients were:

Moyne Celtic Traditions Association $4900 for the Lake School of Celtic Music, Song and Dance; Port Fairy Football Netball Club $3600 (for its ‘Passing the Ball’ program); Warrnambool Racing Club $3000 (for the Koroit and Port Fairy Cup Day); Warrnambool Motorcycle Club $1600 (Glenmore Pony Express) and $480 to the Port Fairy Community Group for its Community House winter school holiday program.

In approving the funds, Cr Karen Foster said there was a “fantastic mix”

of events being funded, ranging from community celebrations, music, arts and culture through to heritage car displays and motocross events.

“From annual favourites like the Moyneyana Festival and the Koroit Irish Festival, through to brand new events like the Mortlake Gift, it’s great to be able to support these groups with this fund,” she said.

“Moyne is the south-west event’s capital and the number of applications

to this fund really highlights the huge amount of variety we have on offer across the year.

“We are really excited to support these events with this funding and I’m looking forward to getting to as many as possible.”

Cr Foster said while funding requests were almost double the amount allocated to the fund, some funding was provided to all who met the program’s criteria.

“Unfortunately, one event withdrew its application after the assessment, which means $5000 will be held over in contingency to support other new events that council may be able to support over the next year,” she said.

“The festival and events fund, along with our community assistance fund and business façade improvement fund are cornerstones in supporting our communities right across the shire.”

Women’s Weekend a hit

PORT Fairy’s annual ‘Women’s Weekend’ once again attracted great interest from across the district.

After being postponed due to the pandemic, the popular event returned to Port Fairy last weekend, with many of the activities sold-out.

Organised by members of the Port Fairy Community House, the event kicked off on Friday night with celebrations at Blarney Books.

Event organiser Pam McGoldrick said the program focussed on women’s wellbeing, encouraging them to slow down and take care of themselves.

“The weekend was built around the idea of women creating friendships and social interaction, connecting and really taking care of themselves,” she said.

Some of the highlights of the weekend included several hands-on activities such as ceramics, make-up tutorial, secret garden painting, lino printing on fabric and Zumba.

“These classes really allow women to make valuable social connections,” Ms McGoldrick said.

The weekend also included nature portraits, pilates and dance and concluded with lunch at the Community House on Sunday afternoon.

Delivering meals and friendship

HELPING residents to stay in their own homes for longer has been one of the driving forces behind the success of the Meals on Wheels program.

Last year, more than 21,000 meals were delivered to 285 recipients across Warrnambool alone.

Last Wednesday, August 30, marked the 70th anniversary of the iconic and much-loved meal delivery service.

With the support of thousands of dedicated volunteers, Meals on Wheels not only delivers delicious and nutritious meals to the doors of older residents, it also helps combat social isolation - a national health and wellbeing issue among those aged over 65 and a risk factor for poor health and premature death.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Debbie Arnott said the anniversary was a great achievement for a service that helped people stay within the comfort and familiarity of their own homes for longer.

“And it’s heavily reliant on volunteers, so a big shout out to the volunteers who participate in this program,” Cr Arnott said.

“These volunteers are the fabric of our society and they certainly do help a lot of people that might be struggling to stay in their own home by delivering these meals … well done and it’s such

an achievement for the community.”

Chair of Meals on Wheels Australia Paul Sadler said the 70-year milestone was something to be proud of, with Meals on Wheels providing support that extended beyond just the delivering of food.

“One thing that has remained clear over Meals on Wheels’ 70 years is that the service we provide with the support of committed volunteers, is vital,” Mr Sadler said.

“As we learnt from the subsequent Meals on Wheels social impact report, released by Huber Social, the Meals on Wheels model and our volunteers are critical in supporting older people to live well, meet their nutritional needs, their dietary and eating preferences, providing necessary social connection, as well as carrying out lifesaving wellbeing checks at every visit.

“It’s all of this that sets Meals on Wheels apart and makes it such a crucial service for communities and older Australians right across the nation.

“What we do certainly goes beyond delivering a meal to someone’s door.”

Warrnambool City Council’s manager of community care Peter Russell said Meals on Wheels volunteers helped make a positive difference in the community, while the opportunities to make new friends and learn new skills made volunteering for Meals on

Upgrade for busy roundabout

ONE of Warrnambool’s busiest roundabouts is set for a major upgrade thanks to a $206,000 federal government grant announced earlier this week.

The intersection of Botanic and Queens roads will be upgraded as part of the government’s $25.6 million Black Spot Program funding.

Fifty-seven dangerous crash sites across the state were identified and will soon become safer after the state secured the funding.

The program funds safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at locations where a number of serious crashes are known to have occurred or are at risk of occurring.

Work at the Botanic/Queens roads roundabout will include larger traffic islands, speed cushions, lane rationalisation, lighting upgrades and sharrows on approaches.

“We welcome the federal government’s investment in fixing these dangerous intersections across the state, making sure they are safer for all road users,” Victorian Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said.

“The Black Spot Program strongly aligns with Victoria’s road safety strategy to help stop deaths on our roads.”

Wheels a rewarding experience.

“There are a number of volunteer opportunities available right now and we would welcome anyone who would like to join in the fun while supporting

our essential service,” Mr Russell said. Anyone interested in becoming a Meals on Wheels volunteer can contact Warrnambool council on 5559 4800.

Book week at West

BOOK Week 2023 gave staff and students at Warrnambool West Primary School the chance to enjoy a range of special activities. One of the highlights of the week was the chance for students to leave their school uniforms at home on Wednesday and dress up as their favourite book characters. Each day throughout the week a staff member read one of the short-listed books to the whole school while students ate their lunch. Children from all year levels took part in a colouring competition and also rotated through classrooms to complete activities related to the short-listed books.

Early fire season predicted

RESIDENTS can expect a drier, warmer spring with predictions of an early start to the fire season in some parts of the state.

Victoria’s drier than average conditions are expected to continue, following below average rainfall across much of the state during winter, according to the Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Spring, released late last week.

Despite below average rainfalls for winter, grass growth is expected to be higher than usual following three years of wet La Niña conditions.

There is also a high likelihood that the bushfire season will start earlier, compared to the past two years, across much of central, western and northern Victoria.

Remaining parts of the state are expected to see normal fire potential however, hot and windy conditions can still pose a fire risk.

Emergency services remain well prepared for emerging risks associated with the potential for an earlier start to bushfire season and will continue to monitor conditions.

The Australian Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Spring is developed by the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) and supported by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

Local communities are encouraged to understand their local risks and can keep up to date with the Fire Danger Ratings on the VicEmergency app and VicEmergency website.

“We can expect a warmer spring and earlier start to

the fire season this year, however, CFA crews across the state are prepared to protect their communities once again,” CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said.

Fire Rescue Victoria commissioner Gavin Freeman encouraged residents to be ready early.

“Grass and bushfires do impact built-up areas so if you live in or near the bush, or if you live in a built-up area, make sure your family is ready for an emergency,” he said.

“Anyone planning to travel should be mindful of the developing weather advice and monitor weather conditions.

“Preparation is the best policy when it comes to fire safety so check the conditions before travelling and have a plan for high-risk days.”

Family fun at Offi ceworks

A COMMUNITY fun day at the recently opened Officeworks store attracted large crowds last Saturday week. The fun day proved a popular way to celebrate one of Warrnambool’s newest businesses, with visitors enjoying an art workshop with indigenous artist Trace Roache, fairy floss, face painting and giveaways.

Warrnambool Football Netball Club members kept hungry stomachs satisfied with a barbecue throughout the day.

ROAR

Port Fairy-Belfast Lions Club continue to take part in the highly-valued ‘Lion Assist’ program.

MEMBERS of the

The program provides emergency assistance to elderly residents, and others in need, whether that involves changing a blown light bulb or switching batteries in a smoke alarm (where appropriate tradespeople were not immediately available).

The club, through its involvement with programs such as meals on wheels and the community bus, was well aware of such a need in the community and saw the value of the program, particularly for elderly living alone where a minor smoke alarm malfunction can cause concern and even fear.

Lion Assist was established under strict guidelines – for emergency assistance only and not replacing the role of regular tradesmen or where a qualified person is essential (such as electrical faults).

A Lion Assist emergency phone was organised and fridge magnets containing the Lion Assist emergency contact details were prepared and issued to elderly and infirm residences.

Now in its 21st year the program continues as a Lion activity.

One of the interesting offshoots to the program was the awareness of many faulty smoke alarms and as an added Lion Assist service, the club has introduced an annual check of smoke alarms, and the replacement of batteries.

“We never realised the real necessity of regular smoke alarm checks until our involvement,” one Lion member said.

“In our first year we checked about 70 smoke alarms and found at least a quarter of those alarms to be faulty, poorly placed, or not functional, including several with expired batteries or no batteries at all.

“One even had the batteries still wrapped in their original plastic and inserted backwards as they were when the alarm was purchased several years earlier.”

There have been other interesting situations.

A Lion member was also “shown the door” on one occasion after suggesting the floor level installation of a smoke alarm was not suitable. The occupier had told the member that it was the only place where she could reach it.

Members also found two smoke alarms installed over the kitchen stove or above a toaster where they were regularly set off by rising heat and were usually silenced with a flicking tea towel.

There was one elderly lady who demanded the older batteries recovered from her alarm be used in her electronic fly trap, and another, she was at least eighty plus, who set a chair on top of her kitchen table so that the smoke alarm could be reached.

“That’s how I do it,” she said.

Many smoke alarms, especially in newer homes, are electrically wired in but still contain a battery so that the alarm remains functional during a power outage.

Rowing fun on the Moyne

ANYONE wanting to give rowing a try should head to Port Fairy each Saturday afternoon and join the fun on the ‘Shearwater’ whaleboat.

Since 2018 the ‘Shearwater’ has been gracing the waters of the Moyne River from Port Fairy. Its origins date back to 2015 with the formation of Port Fairy Heritage Boats Inc.

This came about after a group of rowers decided that, after years of ‘messing about in boats’, it was time to build a replica whaleboat for Port Fairy.

One of the members, Robert Whitehead, had built a whaleboat while working as a boat builder at Flagstaff Hill in the 1990s.

With the formation of Port Fairy Heritage Boats Inc, the group set about seeking grants and raising funds to make the dream possible.

In June 2015 a grant was obtained from the Port Fairy Folk Festival, and the Huon pine was ordered.

Other grants followed from Moyne Shire, Pacific Hydro, South West Foundation, Port Fairy Tourist Association and Bendigo Bank.

“Shearwater” was built by local Port Fairy boatbuilder, Garry Stewart – a

craftsman of his trade.

Garry was assisted by Robert Whitehead who contributed many volunteer hours, as well as members of Port Fairy Heritage Boats.

Garry and Robert based their build on plans for a 1933 Charles Beetle whaleboat.

Work progressed and eventually the whaleboat “Shearwater” was launched by Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC Governor of Victoria on March 9, 2018.

Port Fairy now has a beautiful whaleboat to be proud of and is listed as a wonderful community asset.

She is a magnificent attraction for visitors when viewed from the banks of the Moyne River.

Anyone wanting to keep fit and make new friends is welcome to join the group for a row on the scenic Moyne River.

The group meets at the historic lifeboat station on Griffiths Street, Port Fairy each Saturday from 1pm.

No previous rowing experience is required however the minimum age is 16 years.

All equipment is provided.

The rowers are also fortunate to have access to another whaleboat, ‘Sir Fletcher Jones’, courtesy of Moyne Shire.

Regular maintenance is vital

YOU wouldn’t board a plane if you knew it hadn’t been well maintained – nor would you want to get on a rollercoaster if you knew the nuts and bolts hadn’t been checked.

It’s the same with your car. By maintaining and regularly servicing your care it will be more reliable, safer to drive and less likely to break down and need expensive repairs.

Keeping your car in a roadworthy state by ensuring it is regularly serviced, and the tyres are in good condition, will help keep not only you safe but your passengers and other road users.

Basic maintenance is something every car owner should ensure is carried out regularly.

Simple checks such as keeping an eye on water and oil levels may just save a costly repair bill.

Ignoring squealing brakes or mysterious ‘clunking’ sounds from the engine can result in a premature trip to the scrap heap for your beloved vehicle.

Keeping your car mechanically sound and in a good condition can not only save you money in the long run, it could potentially also keep you safe.

You can also be fined for failing to look after your car.

Police at random roadworthy checks can fine you for such things as bald tyres, a cracked windscreen, a broken seat belt, faulty brake lights and a host of other issues.

Your car’s service manual may not exactly be exciting reading, but it is full of useful information and tips including appropriate tyre pressures for your vehicle, how to change light bulbs, which fluids to top up and how often and can even show you how to perform basic maintenance jobs. Your service manual will also tell you when scheduled services are due. Booking these services in to a reputable, professional automotive mechanic will ensure thorough checks are made and anything that needs replacing, such as timing belts and spark plugs, can be done.

A basic car safety checklist includes checking the tension and belt buckles on seatbelts, ensuring the handbrake can hold your vehicle on a slope, check tyre pressures, ensure the spare tyre is in good condition, check windscreens and mirrors for any cracks, and ensure all external lights are working.

When it comes to tyres, gauges are cheap and easy to use.

If you feel your car pulling to one side when you drive, you may be overdue for a wheel alignment and balance.

A good way to extend the life of your tyres is to have them rotated regularly to reduce uneven wear.

If you can hear any unusual engine noises make sure you have your vehicle checked by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.

DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT by

MLA’s YARDING 1038 CHANGE 270 more

Mortlake agents yarded 1,040 cattle this week representing an increase of 240 head on the previous market. The offering was of a better standard of grown cattle and included some well finished grain-fed’s. Younger cattle are still showing the effects of the winter with a good mixture of beef and dairy types and less manufacturing cattle available to a buying panel not operating to full capacity. The yarding consisted of 160 grown, 440 trade and 425 cows along with 14 grown bulls.

Feeder interest was sound with a good number of beef breeds in the trade cattle purchased by feeder operators. The market for most categories of cattle remained firm with the exception of secondary types that were easier by 10c to 20c/kg. Trade steers and heifers made between 256c and 373c/kg. Grown cattle topped at 296/kg and manufacturing steers were selling from 200c to 255c/kg. Better type beef cows sold from 200c to 256c/kg with the medium weights between 175c and 200c/kg. Dairy cows were generally making between 160c and 233c/kg. Grown beef bulls topped at 240cq/kg Market reporter. Chris. Agnew

Local skaters shine

ATHLETES from Warrnambool’s roller derby team, TRV, showed great skills at the recent state-wide stampede in Geelong.

Although the side wasn’t in contention for a place this year, it did send some athletes for the modified contact round.

These rounds are a stepping stone for up-and-coming players to full contact play – and showcase the derby players of tomorrow.

Once again local athletes performed well with their team (black) winning a nailbitingly close game with a score of 266254.

Chloe (Cheapskate) took out the MVP jammer award and made the final few laps,

collecting points that pulled black team ahead.

Kirsty (Lady Killington) also brought home an MVP blocker with some amazing chest catches.

Michelle (Eviloffspring) also displayed phenomenal blocking skills.

A reminder to all skaters that tonight (Friday) is Roller Polooza at the Warrnambool Showgrounds – band night (until 11pm), with a skate session from 7pm-8pm.

Tonight’s event is a family-friendly one, with skate hire, snacks and drinks available. Tickets at the door. All welcome.

Eagles soar at home

NORTH Warrnambool Eagles capped off a stellar home and away season with a sevenpoint win over Koroit last weekend.

The final round win saw the Eagles finish second on the Hampden League ladder, two games behind leaders South Warrnambool Roosters and a game clear of the third-placed Terang Mortlake.

The Eagles worked hard in front of their home crowd on Saturday, kicking three goals three to just two points in the first term before the Saints added six majors in the second quarter to take a three-point lead going into the main break.

The Eagles regrouped in the third, adding four goals to the scoreboard while containing the visitors to just three behinds.

The third term proved a winning one for the Eagles, heading into the final

quarter with 21-point lead. Despite a late comeback from the Saints, the Eagles held on to win 9.10.64 to 8.9.57.

Adam Wines, Jett Bermingham, Judah Greene, Jarryd Lewis, Benjamin Mugavin and Matthew Wines were named best for the Eagles while for Koroit, James Gow, Tom Couch, Jayden Whitehead, Jamie Lloyd, Dylan McCutcheon and Jag McInerney were in the best. This weekend’s first round of the Hampden finals series will see the Eagles take on the Bloods in Saturday’s qualifying final at Leura Oval while on Sunday the Saints will face Cobden Bombers in the elimination at Hanlon Park.

In the reserves, the Bombers will take on the Blues on Saturday while Sunday’s elimination will see the Bloods and Saints fight to stay in the finals race.

Boost for clubs

SEVERAL football clubs across the district will share in more than $292,000 worth of new equipment and improvements thanks to grants announced this week.

AFL Western District, in conjunction with AFL Victoria, yesterday (Thursday) announced that 26 applications had been approved to assist important initiatives to help strengthen and grow community football in the region.

South Rovers, Russells Creek and North Warrnambool football clubs will each receive $25,000 towards a football electronic

Tigers to face Power

scoreboard at each club. North Warrnambool was also allocated $1,307.90 towards Indigenous jumpers and netball bibs.

Merrivale Football Netball Club was allocated $20,000 for netting behind the football goals.

Dennington Football Netball Club was successful in its application for $14,000 towards goal post netting while Old Collegians will receive $3,000 for Indigenous club jumpers and $1,500 for a laptop.

Panmure Football Netball Club was allocated $2,050 for a defibrillator.

The Koroit Football Netball Club will receive $2,500 towards electronic point of sale equipment.

MERRIVALE will take on Kolora Noorat in this Saturday’s Warrnambool District preliminary final.

The Tigers, who finished the home and away season minor premiers, went down to the second-placed Nirranda in last Saturday’s qualifying final at Mack Oval.

Kolora Noorat will head into tomorrow’s clash on a high after overcoming a strong Panmure outfit

in last Sunday’s semifinal at Allansford.

The Power ended the Bulldogs’ finals campaign with a 16-point victory.

Nirranda, who finished the home and away season in second spot on the league ladder, dominated the previously undefeated Merrivale side last weekend.

Mack Oval proved a happy hunting ground for the Blues, who opened their day with a quick five goals three while restricting the Tigers to

three straight goals.

The second term was a low scoring affair, with the Tigers adding 1.3 to the scoreboard while Nirranda was kept scoreless.

A six-point lead at the main break was enough to spur Nirranda on in the third, kicking 2.3 to extend their lead to 19 points going into the final term.

The final term saw both sides struggle to make any real dent on the scoreboard, with Nirranda clenching

victory on the siren, 8.8.56 to 4.7.31.

Reagan Nutting, Mathew Lloyd, James Willsher, Brayden Harkness, John Paulin and Dylan Lees were best for Nirranda.

For the Tigers, Tyler Stephens, Angus Campbell, Hamish Gurry, Samuel Doukas, Jalen Porter and Sean Barnes were in the best.

The winner of tomorrow’s clash will earn the right to take on Nirranda in next week’s grand final.
