Seniors festival returns

THE Warrnambool Seniors Festival returns in October, with over two dozen free or low-cost events throughout the month.

One of the highlights of the planned activities will an intergenerational magic show at the Lighthouse Theatre on Sunday October 22.

The show, starring magician Elio Simonetti, will start at the familyfriendly time of 2pm with tickets priced at only $10 (children under 13 admitted free).

Elio has been a magician for three decades and said that a love of magic was something that spanned generations of audiences.

“As we grow older, we become blasé and we forget the little things that are really extraordinary,” he said.

“Do you remember the first time you saw a butterfly, or a rainbow, or snow, how amazed you were?

people to enjoy the things they like, but to also try something new, and Mr Simonetti said that a curious mind can help with healthy ageing.

“In your mind and in your heart, you don’t age if you always have that outlook on life and if you realise that you’re never too old to be astonished by something,” he said.

they’ve seen a lot and for them to give me their time is a bit of an honour.”

Warrnambool mayor Cr Debbie Arnott encouraged everyone to check out the program and to book early.

“While ageing is a part of life that not everyone looks forward to, really, it’s a chance to take some time for yourself and have fun,” she said.

“As well as the magic show with Elio, there are walking tours of historic streets and the Botanic Gardens, there are bus trips, there are come and try fitness classes, there are rides in classic cars, pampering sessions and lots more, so have a look at the program and plan your month.

“All of the events are either free or heavily discounted to try and encourage people to give as many a go as possible. That being said, if there’s something you’re keen to go to please book early as things can book out.”

“Watching a magic show reminds you of that feeling so we are encouraging people to bring their kids, their grandkids and even their great grandkids so they can experience the wonder together.

“You’ve got the chance to see it through their eyes, and then you’ll have something to share forever.”

The Seniors Festival will include a wide range of events to encourage

The show will incorporate classical magic and jazz music, with Mr Simonetti saying it combines highly visual illusions with those that are more cerebral.

“It’s the magic that would have amazed a child’s parents and grandparents,” he said.

“For me, performing for seniors is a bit of a privilege because I realise they’ve been around a long time,

The Warrnambool Seniors Festival program is available at the Archie Graham Community Centre in hard copy and online at the Warrnambool city council website.

The festival will be officially launched at 1.30pm on Wednesday October 4 at the Archie Graham Community Centre, with the local nominees for the Victorian Senior of the Year Award to be acknowledged and celebrated.

Lake stocked for school holidays

THERE is more fishing fun in stock for everyone this school holidays, with thousands of rainbow trout stocked in more than 80 lakes across Victoria thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

Lake Pertobe received more than 400 rainbow trout ahead of the school holidays.

The state-wide stocking program released almost 10 million fish in 2022, with the majority produced at Snobs Creek and the VFA’s native hatchery at Arcadia, near Shepparton.

The program is supported by the reinvestment of recreational fishing licence fees and the Andrews Labor Government’s $96 million investment to improve fishing, boating, piers and aquaculture.

Rainbow trout are the ideal catch for budding fishers as they take a variety of widely available baits like worms or PowerBait.

Most Family Fishing Lakes feature pontoons or jetties, good access paths and parking for fishers of all abilities as well as other nearby facilities like barbecues and toilets.

Minister for Outdoor Recreation Sonya Kilkenny said holidays are a great opportunity to get kids into the great outdoors and wetting a line for a rainbow trout gives you the chance to make lasting memories while introducing young fishers to a new pastime.

“Family Fishing Lakes are located across Victoria and feature good access, regular stockings of catchable-size fish and many are located within suburban areas or close to town so kids everywhere can try their luck,” she said.

In Family Fishing Lakes, a daily bag limit of five trout applies, of which only two trout can exceed 35 centimetres.

More information about bag and size limits, permitted equipment and licensing can be found in the Victorian Recreational Fishing Guide, available free from most bait and tackle shops, online at vfa.vic.gov.au/fishingguide or via the free ‘Vic Fishing’ app on your smartphone.

For the full list of waterways stocked for these holidays, visit vfa.vic.gov.au/holidaytrout.

PRIMARY students from across the district have shown courage and resilience to deliver a prepared speech during this week’s public speaking awards night.

Held last Tuesday night and hosted by the Lions Club of Warrnambool, the evening showcased the talents of several local students.

Five participants from Warrnambool West Primary School attended after winning their school-based competition.

These students were Mia He, Daniel Yu, Omar Obied, Babu Songe-Mohamed and Reem Obied.

The students were given a topic to prepare and present a speech about.

The year 3/4s spoke for three minutes about “Life as a Giant” and the year 5/6s spoke for four minutes about “Weird and Amazing World Records.”

The year 5/6 students also had an impromptu section where they had to speak for one minute about life with no technology.

They were given 10 minutes to prepare their speech.

King’s College student Juliette Bourke won the year 3/4 section and Warrnambool West Primary School student Reem Obied was the successful speaker in the 5/6 section.

All students spoke brilliantly and received a participation certificate. Warrnambool West Primary School student Babu Songe-Mohamed captured the audience’s attention with his speech on Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Through his well-delivered speech, Babu respectfully brought awareness to the disease and its impact on both sufferers and carers.

Well done to all participants and the Lions club organisers on a spectacular night.

Torch winds through town

LEGACY’S centenary torch relay made its way into and around Warrnambool this week.

Several local veterans, ADF (Australian Defence Force) personnel and their families joined the relay as it wound its way through the streets of Warrnambool, including a stop at the RSL for the playing of The Last Post and a minute’s silence.

Warrnambool RSL president Tony Geyer welcomed those at the gathering and congratulated Legacy on its centenary.

“As we stand at the war memorial, we are reminded of the support that both Legacy and the RSL provides to veterans and their families,” Mr Geyer said.

“Like the bond between servicemen, the bond between the RSL and Legacy has stood the test of time. Together we have both fought hard to maintain welfare and care to veterans and their families in an ever-increasing competitive market place where the fight for volunteers and financial support grows harder each year.”

Mr Geyer said that the bond between the two organisations (RSL and Legacy) was now clearly demonstrated, with RSL Victoria’s Veteran Support Department now housed within Legacy House in Melbourne.

“I look forward to the day when Legacy Warrnambool and the RSL here join forces under the one roof, providing coordinated support to veterans, veteran families and widows,” he said.

“To reach 100 years of operating within the community is, on its own, one huge achievement; to do this is a volunteer-based organisation is nothing short of outstanding.

“May the torch of Legacy shine on as brightly as ever.”

The torch relay began in France in the lead-up to ANZAC Day, then travelled to London where it was greeted by King Charles before heading to Australia.

It is now on a six-month tour of our shores and arrived in Warrnambool on Wednesday morning.

The torch will travel more than 50,000 kilometres, through 100 stops, carried by around 1500 torch bearers – with an aim to raise over $10 million.

“It’s amazing to hear how many people have been and will be involved with the relay,” Warrnambool Legacy member Charmian Morris said.

“This year is a very special one for Legacy and we also hope that by increasing awareness of the wonderful assistance Legacy has provided, and will continue to provide, we can also attract more volunteers.

“It would be wonderful to have more young people involved; they are our future so it’s important that Legacy continues for another 100 years and beyond.”

Since 1923 Legacy has been helping the families of Australian Defence Force (ADF) men and women who have lost their lives or their health as a result of their service.

Founded on a promise made from one digger to another – to “look after the missus and the kids”Legacy is this year celebrating its centenary.

To commemorate the special milestone the ‘Legacy torch’ will spend six months travelling Australia, stopping wherever there is an active branch.

“The centenary relay is a six-month campaign to pay homage and acknowledge veterans’ families, saluting their sacrifice,” Ms Morris said.

“Legacy is an iconic Australian charity that does so much wonderful work caring for 43,000 veterans’ families, including widows in their senior years,

younger widows and children, partners and children of those veterans who have given their health.

“Legacy strives to ensure that those in their care can fully realise their potential.”

Warrnambool Legacy was formed in 1947 and has continued to be there for the families of those who served and sacrificed, providing support their partners and children.

$400,000 pool upgrade complete

WORK on a $400,000 refurbishment of the indoor pool at Warrnambool’s Tasman Holiday Park is now complete.

Just in time for the September school holidays, the new pool will no doubt be a welcome feature for visitors to the town.

The substantial $400,000 investment reaffirms the holiday park’s dedication to ensuring guests enjoy a pleasurable holiday experience.

Work started on the project in early May, with the completion date timed to welcome guests for the spring and summer season.

The choice to revamp the indoor pool area was prompted by the challenges associated with excessive humidity and the age of the pool itself.

Nikki Milne, CEO of Tasman Holiday Parks spoke of the value that this improvement brings to their Warrnambool park.

“We remain dedicated to constantly improving and we’re giving existing customers new reasons to visit and return to the park,” Ms Milne said.

“Tasman Holiday Parks recognised the need to enhance both the aesthetic and the safety of our indoor pool facility, to ensure that our guests have a memorable and worry-free stay.”

During the refurbishment, key improvements were made to enhance the facility.

Tasman Holiday Parks implemented top-tier ventilation systems, including state-of-theart extraction fans and perforated ceiling sheets to efficiently remove humidity and create a more comfortable atmosphere for their guests.

The pool has undergone relining to ensure the safety of their guests, eliminating any dangerous tiles.

The outdated Astro turf surrounding the pool has been replaced with non-slip tiles, not only improving aesthetics but also providing a safer walking surface.

To further enhance the indoor pool facility’s visual appeal, stained ceiling frame structures have been clad and the walls have been freshly painted.

Community awards now open

NOMINATIONS for the annual Moyne Community Awards are now open.

The awards aim to recognise the people and events that make our community great places to live, with nominations being sought for Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year.

Mayor Cr Karen Foster encouraged community members to head to council’s website and lodge their nominations before October 16.

“We all know someone within the community who goes above and beyond to make the community a better place – often they work quietly behind the scenes making sure events, services, community programs and clubs run smoothly,” Cr Foster said.

1 57.29% Linda Picone - John Sarena

2 56.25% N. Houghton - S. Dawson

3 53.12% Player 68 - Anne Smith

Last Wednesday saw the club travel to Camperodown (pic above) results were:

1 60.42% L. Picone - G. Hindhaugh (7)

2 59.38% Kathy Hilder - Marie Bird

3 53.12% Nick Houghton - Joan Malikoff

4 51.04% M. Lines-Kelly - N. Howard

4 51.04% Unknown - Sue Pollock (5)

6 38.54% E. Winter - V. Malikoff (1)

7 36.46% Tony Plevier - Dennis Hilder (3)

“Without them the community would be a much poorer place, so this is your chance to nominate so they can receive the recognition they deserve.”

Cr Foster believes Moyne is also home to a huge range of events which add to the vibrancy and sense of community, so council also wants to celebrate an event that has brought the community together in celebration or to raise awareness of important issues.

The awards will be presented on January 26, 2024, with details of the location to be announced shortly.

Nominations will close on Monday October 16, and can be made by visiting council’s website at www.moyne.vic.gov.au/awards or in person at council’s customer service centres in Port Fairy or Mortlake.

Spring is the perfect time to get back in the garden

SPRING is the perfect time to head back in to the garden, whether it be to plant flowers, grow vegetables or get rid of those pesky winter weeds.

One of the most rewarding jobs to do this time of year is to clear your garden beds of weeds before they have time to start growing with renewed energy. Hand weed or take a hoe to the beds and then follow up with a much needed feed of fertiliser.

It is also a great time to start a vegetable patch, establish new garden beds and plant just about anything. Make a start this weekend and plan ahead.

Make the most of any sunshine and clear days, pull on a set of gardening gloves and head outdoors to enjoy the fresh air.

Early spring is the best time to give everything in the garden a good dose of

fertiliser.

After the next rain, scatter slow-release or pelletised fertiliser over your garden beds.

It is also suggested you apply a slowrelease complete lawn food to all grass areas to encourage strong growth in the weeks and months to come.

If your lawn is looking a little ‘sad’ and spare, reseed or re-turf areas in need. Before replanting, dig in some organic matter and water the area with a soil wetting agent.

Try to keep everyone off these areas while the new lawn is coming through.

This is a rewarding time to plant vegetables including summer salad veggies such as snowpeas, capsicum, lettuce, cucumber, parsley and tomato.

To give your garden a quick lift, plant flowering spring annuals.

You can also add instant colour with pots of flowering bulbs such as daffodils

and tulips. Trees, shrubs and annuals can be planted now.

Remove plants that have died or are past their best.

If you have plants that have been in the same pots for years, or that have outgrown their current pot, now is a safe time to re-pot them.

If you only have a few pots buy a bag or two of potting mix. If you have more, talk to your local landscape supplier to save time and money.

Finally, top up any water features you have in the garden and clean ponds by

removing any accumulated leaves and rubbish that may have blown in over winter.

Scoop out algae and perhaps introduce some fresh waterlilies to the pond.

Regardless of the size of your garden, there can be much enjoyment and reward gained from time spent in it.

Gardening is something that can be enjoyed by all family members so why not encourage your children to get out in the fresh air and start digging or planting?

They too will enjoy watching the flowers bloom and the veggies start to grow in coming weeks.

Dirty hands, happy faces

CHILDREN love to be outdoors, they love to get dirty and they love to feel they are doing something important.

What better way to combine all three than to have your children out working in the garden.

Gardening offers children a great range of benefits and is a wonderful activity for those of all ages.

It can help them, develop many skills, learn about nature, grow their own vegetables and have fun at the same time.

Kids can see, touch, hear, smell and taste the plants and soil.

They can experience different colour, shapes, textures, sounds and flavours of the natural world.

Gardening – and in particular looking after their own ‘patch’ – can teach children responsibility; how to care for and look after living things by watering, pruning, weeding and harvesting their own plants.

Gardening can foster curiosity and discovery.

Children can explore the science of animals, weather, plants and the environment by watching how seeds sprout, how worms compost, how rain

helps the garden and plants grow and how flowers pollinate in spring.

Gardening also offers the chance for selfconfidence.

Children can feel proud of their achievements especially when their plants and flowers grow or their vegetables and fruit harvest. This, in turn, also allows them to learn where fresh food comes from and how it can benefit their health.

Working with adults and other children in the garden can encourage cooperation and teamwork.

They can learn to share, negotiate and communicate while forming a special bond with family and friends.

By working out in the garden, children can learn to appreciate the beauty and diversity of nature and to respect the environment and its surrounds. Take the time to answer their questions and to feed their curiosity.

Time spent in the garden – away from technology – is time well spent.

READYYOURTOOLSTHISSPRING

Garden lovers rejoice, spring is just around the corner! Soon you will start to see your lawn, hedges, even your weeds, start to grow like crazy, which means it’s time to make sure your tools are in tip top shape and ready to help you tackle the warmer weather.

CHECK OUT OUR TOP TIPS TO READY YOUR TOOLS FOR SPRING.

LAWN MOWER MAINTENANCE

The most important place to start is with your lawn mower. While your local Stihl Dealer, MCM Sales & Service, will always recommend undertaking some basic maintenance or even bringing it in for a service before winter, we understand that doesn’t always happen. If it’s been a while in between services, we recommend getting that done. If you have a gold star next to your name when it comes to servicing your garden power tools, then there are a few other areas to dust off before you get mowing.

First, assess the condition of your blades. Believe it or not, dull mower blades can wreak havoc on your lawn. Ripped or frayed grass blades are the first and most obvious sign of dull mower blades. If you look closely, you’ll be able to see whether you’ve left a nice clean cut through your grass blades, or if they’re fraying at the edges – similar to a split end on a strand of hair.

Frayed grass blades struggle to absorb and retain moisture. So you might think your lawn is having a big drink every time you experience heavy rain, but you could also be wrong. They also leave your lawn open to pathogens and susceptible to disease.

If in doubt, take your lawn mower to MCM Sales & Service who will be able to replace your current blades so they’re nice and sharp for spring.

TIDY YOUR TRIMMER BLADES

The same advice applies to your hedge trimmers. It’s always best to clean and maintain them after every use, but we know this doesn’t always happen. STIHL Superclean is great at removing sap and resin from hedge trimmer blades. Give them a spray before running the machine for 30 seconds to ensure they are fully coated. If there is still grime leftover from your last use which was a while ago, give your blades a wipe over with a damp cloth, and repeat the process. Remember to always remove the battery before doing this type of task, and ensure you are wearing gloves.

Applying STIHL Superclean to your hedge trimmer blades after every use is a great way to stop any build-up of plant matter which can eventuate into rust. It will also extend the life of your blades and keep them sharper for longer.

PREPARE FOR PRUNING

Spring is a great time for pruning. It’s an excellent way to kickstart some growth as the weather warms and pruning will only encourage this further. You may well have been doing some pruning during winter. Either way, whichever tool you decide to use will likely need a little TLC, too.

For pole pruners, or if you own STIHL’s number one selling tool worldwide, the GTA 26, the best place to start is checking the condition of your chain. A dull chain will affect the performance of these tools significantly and make them work much harder than they need to, so this is the first area you should check. There are several different sharpening devices in the STIHL range depending on what it is you’re sharpening, so have a chat to your local STIHL Dealer, MCM Sales & Service Warrnambool, to find the right one for you.

LINE UP!

Your grass trimmer will be on high rotation over the next few months, so you’ll want to make sure it’s ready to go. Check your trimming line. It can get brittle over time, and you won’t get too far next time you tackle your edges if this is the case. If it snaps easily, unfortunately it’s time to dispose of it. In future, to keep your trimming line in like-new condition, keep it soaking in water.

District hit by storm

WILD weather lashed much of the state late last week, bringing with it high seas, strong winds and widespread damage across the district.

Wind gusts estimated at more than 100 kilometres an hour left a path of destruction across Warrnambool, Port Fairy, Koroit and neighbouring towns last Friday.

SES crews were kept busy throughout the day, answering calls of fallen trees and minor building damage.

Widespread power outages were experienced across the region, with a number of faults reported.

“Extreme weather brought on a number of outages in the south-west and west of Victoria last Friday,” a Powercor spokesperson said.

“Power outages were recorded in several towns including Portland and Warrnambool. Some customers were without power into Saturday morning, with the majority of customers back on supply on Friday evening.

“We thank all those communities affected for their patience as our crews worked to restore power safely.”

Along with the hefty winds and chilly temperatures on the day, data collected by the Bureau of Meterology showed 7.2mm of rain fell over Warrnambool last Friday and 3.4mm in Port Fairy.

Free green waste disposal in wake of storm

GREEN waste disposal will be free for Moyne Shire residents at council transfer stations for two weeks to help clean-up after last week’s storm.

Moyne mayor Cr Karen Foster said residents would be able to take their green waste to a council transfer station free of charge from September 15 to October 2.

“After last week’s storm we know there are plenty of people who have trees or branches down in their yards or on their properties and we’ve had people ask if free

green waste is an option,” she said.

“If you can put your debris in your fortnightly green waste kerbside collection please do – but there is a lot of debris around and some which is larger than what can go in the kerbside bin - so we are offering free drop-off as an extra way of helping people clean up.

“The time frame covers two weekends, including the AFL grand final long weekend, so there is plenty of time for people to make use of the free drop-off.”

Cr Foster said the council would

also offer another free green waste week in the coming months to help with fire season preparations.

Green waste can be disposed of for free at the Killarney, Mortlake, Peterborough, Hawkesdale, Caramut and Macarthur transfer stations.

Opening hours can be found online at www.moyne.vic.gov.au/ waste as well as dates for kerbside collections.

Transfer station staff may also ask for some identification to confirm you are a Moyne Shire resident.

PET of the MONTH

Spring is here and flowers are blooming, birds are chirpin’, and the days are starting to get warm and longer.

It’s the perfect time for frolicking outdoors with your four-legged friends.

But it’s important to remember that fleas and other nasties are at their worst this season, and fresh new grass and pollinating plants can irritate sensitive skin. Here are a few tips for keeping your pet healthy, happy and safe this Spring!

WHICH

PARASITES POSE A RISK?

TICKS: Very high risk.

There are 3 species of ticks in Australia: The Paralysis Tick, The Brown Dog Tick, and the Bush Tick. Only the Paralysis Tick is venomous. Ticks are at their worst during spring and summer due to their breeding season.

FLEAS: High risk.

Fleas love the warm weather and breed most actively during spring. Fleas can be very difficult to see in your pet’s fur - in fact, most people will never see them. You may instead spot ‘flea dirt’ (which is actually flea faeces!) within the fur over your dog’s rump or under your cat’s chin. Make sure to keep your pet protected all Spring long.

INTESTINAL WORMS: Moderate risk.

Unfortunately, pesky worms never rest! These ‘evergreen’ parasites pose a risk all year round, and can lead to debilitating illnesses particularly in young animals.

HEARTWORM: Moderate-high risk.

The transmission of heartworm is at its worst in summer due to its mosquito-borne method of spread, however mozzies can certainly start to ramp up in Spring - so it’s vital to be on top of your pet’s heartworm prevention.

MITES: Moderate-low risk. Dust mites tend to flare up in winter when our windows are closed and homes are stuffy, however some species such as Demodex or ear mites may pose a risk all year round.

Spring Skin Care Tips:

Because it can be difficult (if not impossible!) to reduce your pet’s exposure to springtime grass and pollen, your best defence may be to improve the strength of your pet’s skin barrier. This can be achieved by implementing a few easy changes at home.

1. Provide Beneficial Oils into the Diet

Help nourish the skin from the inside out with the addition of Omega Fatty Acids which strengthen the skin layer while soothing dry, itchy skin. This can be achieved by feeding a skin care or a fish-based food, or with the addition of an Omega fatty acid supplement.

2. Soothing Shampoo, Conditioner or Lotion

Some shampoos can provide relief from inflammation or help heal infection. Oatmeal based shampoos are ideal for sensitive pets who suffer from dermatitis by providing gentle cleansing to remove dirt, chemicals and allergens from the skin. Use together with a conditioner to prolong the soothing effect and restore moisture to the skin.

GET ACTIVE IN THE SUNSHINE!

This Spring, take advantage of the sunshine and get active with your best friend. Just like for humans, exercise helps your dog burn off some extra calories and kick-starts their metabolism. Why not shed that winter weight together?

For cats, keep them active by encouraging them to play regularly. Provide your kitty with plenty of toys, and don’t forget to rotate through them as cats can get bored with the same toys after a while.

Fitness benefits their mind - Play and exercise are hugely beneficial for dogs and cats on both a psychological and physical level. Not only does playtime keep their mind stimulated and happy, but it also helps keep them occupied and away from other objects (such as your shoes!)

If your worried about your pet or need advice on any of these topics ask your local vet clinic.

My name is

Lola is a 6 year old brindle cat. Originally a rescue kitten from Warrnambool RSPCA.

Lola is mainly a house cat and sleeps inside every night.

Lola shares her home with one dog who she gets along with very well. She has been known to spoon with the dog on very cold nights.

Lola loves a lap to stretch out on and is very affectionate and will come running to her name.

WHY

DO SKIN AND EAR ISSUES FLARE UP IN SPRING?

Spring brings a lot of new plant growth. Flowering and non-flowering plants, grasses, pollens, and weeds can all cause your pet to itch, scratch, and develop a range of skin conditions.

As the weather becomes warmer and your pet spends more time outdoors exploring their environment, they may react to new plants and pollens in the air.

Her favourite toy is a rubber mouse attached by string to her cat scratching tower. This rubber mouse gets a really good workout at times.

Lola is a much loved member of our family.

Send us a picture of your pet with details on why they are so special.

Literary weekend a hit

PORT Fairy’s annual Literary Weekend once again attracted a large amount of interest.

Reading and writing enthusiasts gathered in various locations around the town last weekend, drawing on the professional expertise of both seasoned and emerging authors eager to be engaged in this year’s literary festival theme, ‘Kindness’.

Entertainment kicked off at the Reardon Theatre on Friday night with a keynote address from best-selling writer Hugh McKay, author of ‘The Kindness Revolution’.

This was followed by a performance of literary theatre exploring the themes of grief, passion, culture and creativity.

Titled ‘Paris Or Die’ the show was written and performed by Jayne Tuttle, based on her 2019 book by the same name.

Fellowship top of agenda

MEMBERS of the Lions Club of Port Fairy-Belfast and their partners held another successful luncheon last week.

While fellowship was top of the agenda – and there is no discriminating between sexes – the men and women enjoyed separate events; providing opportunities to discuss issues relevant to each.

The club has also announced details of its 2023/24 art show.

This will be held from December 27 through until Saturday January 6 and will be open daily from 10am until 4pm. Entry forms and details are being

prepared and will be forwarded to artists on the club’s email list and by mail in early October.

In acknowledging receipt of their entry, artists will receive painting numbers and details, including a map of where paintings may be delivered.

Any artist or intending artist not receiving details by mid-October should contact the Lions club by email (pfbelfastlions@gmail. com) or by phoning 0428 508 219.

Prizes will be awarded for several categories including best painting overall, best oil, watercolour, acrylic and pastel, and best other medium.

On Saturday afternoon, ‘Time Catchers’ Melbourne author Karen Ginnane ran a well-attended writing workshop in the library.

“This workshop is all about accessing the imagination,” Ms Ginnane said. Ginnane, who is also the author of the acclaimed series ‘When Days Tilt; When Souls Tear’ ran some quick-moving writing exercises as a means of harnessing the imagination.

Saturday’s program also included a young readers party, led by popular children’s book authors RWR McDonald, Andrea Rowe (2022 Children’s Book Council of Australia winner) and Olivia Coates.

Also featured was a short story showcase presented by top Australian authors Ben Walter, Josephine Rowe and Katerina Gibson, along with discussions between several popular authors.

Flowers blow in the wind

THE September meeting of the Warrnambool Floral Art group brought some wonderful creations.

The ladies showed off their talents with creations following the theme of ‘flowers blowing in the wind’ –

which proved very appropriate given the weather last week.

The next meeting will be held on Monday October 2 from 7.30pm at Our Lady Help of Christians in Selby Road, East Warrnambool.

For details contact Judith on 0419 382 465.

Grants open for carbon offset program

MOYNE Shire Council will again partner with community groups and private landowners to offset carbon emissions from its fleet.

The annual community carbon offset program is now open for applications, with grants of up to $1500 available for revegetation works on public land and grants between $1500 and $5000 for projects on privately owned land within the shire.

Mayor Cr Karen Foster said the program was established in 2010.

“After a climate emergency was declared in Moyne, the program was expanded to include the private land component,” she said.

“It’s a really successful program and is a win-win. It means a large portion of the emissions from council’s operations are offset and it works towards improving the region’s bio-diversity.”

Cr Foster said the program would allow for more than 13,000 trees to be planted across the shire.

“This program is a key element of our climate emergency response and has resulted in thousands of trees being planted around the shire since it began,” she said.

“Many of those plantings have formed green corridors across private land to ensure new habitat for birds and other wildlife.

“I’d encourage any community groups or landowners interested to put in an application.”

Cr Foster said funding criteria and applications forms could be found online at www.moyne.vic.gov.au/grants and then clicking on the community carbon offset program section.

Information is also available at council’s customer service centres at Mortlake and Port Fairy. Applications close on Friday, October 6.

Three flags for Nirranda

NIRRANDA is the toast of the Warrnambool District League, winning both the senior football and netball premierships along with the A reserve netball premiership.

Thousands of fans packed Warrnambool’s Reid Oval last Saturday to enjoy the league’s grand final day.

Perfect playing conditions for most of the day laid the foundations for some great games across both the footy field and netball courts. The highly anticipated clash between Nirranda and ladder leaders Merrivale was a relatively low-scoring affair, reflecting the intensity of the match and the struggle from both sides to make any great impact on the scoreboard.

Defensive pressure from Nirranda saw the Tigers struggle to convert in the first half, adding just one goal and two behinds to the board going into the main break – 27 points down.

Another low-scoring third term saw the Tigers bridge the gap to 23 points at three-quarter time before both sides added three majors in the final term.

Final scores were Nirranda 9.8.62 to Merrivale 6.5.41.

Best for the victors were Danny Craven, Mathew Lloyd, Jackson Couch, James Willsher, Jeremy Stacey and Brayden Harkness.

Goals went to Jackson Couch (4), Jason Lee (3) and Jeremy Stacey (2).

For Merrivale, Jack Gleeson, Jalen Porter, Tate Porter, Billy Hancocks, Reggie Barling and James Fary were named in the best.

Goal scorers: Dylan Weir (2) and one each from Bradley Bell, Oliver Doukas, Matt Hausler and Tate Porter.

Merrivale 22 lost to Old Collegians 31.

State title for Emmanuel

EMMANUEL College’s year eight netballers are state champions.

The girls took out the School Sport Victoria championship last Friday week, defeating Rowville by six goals in the grand final, 26-20.

This was the second title for the side, who also won the state championships in 2022.

Coached by Emmanuel

teacher, Abby O’Brien, the team went through the day undefeated.

The school’s intermediate (year nine and 10 girls) netball team also progressed to the state championships.

While they were unable to bring home a state title, they performed exceptionally well throughout their competition, finishing runner-up to Rowville.
