His extensive engagement with Warrnambool City Council committees has earned him a reputation for generosity and positivity. Reflecting on his award back home in Warrnambool yesterday morning, Mr Suggett said he was “absolutely thrilled and honoured”. “It took me by complete surprise to be honest; I think the reality of it all is just now starting to sink in – that I actually won a state award; don’t they usually give those to scientists and Professors?,” he said. “My best friend (wife Betty) was with me at Government House, along with some of our children and grandchildren which made the day even more special.” Mr Suggett said he was kept busy after the presentation ceremony by television interviews and chats with “lots of dignitaries.” “It was all so very special and then we had a lovely lunch and photos on the lawn with the Governor who is a lovely lady; very approachable and she took the time to spend it with my family which meant a lot,” he said. With the award now taking pride of place in the Suggett family home, next on the agenda is this weekend’s Parkinson’s Awareness Walk. The short walk will leave from The Pavilion at 11am, with participants heading along the Promenade before returning to the start line. “It’s just a short walk for awareness; everyone is invited, there’s no charge and participants will all receive a free t-shirt and can enjoy a sausage in bread,” he said.

Cub group future uncertain THE future of the Allansford Scout Group remains uncertain as the group desperately searches for a new leader. The group, which currently has more than 20 active Cubs – several of whom recently returned from a memorable, action-packed Cubaree – has put an urgent call out for a volunteer leader to ensure the group can continue. Current leader Gayle Drake has been at the helm for more than 36 years, during which time each of her four children enjoyed time in the group, but she says it’s now time to pass the reins. “My children are all now grown adults and as much as I love my role here (with the Cubs) it’s really time someone younger and more agile took over,” she said. “We have 20 Cubs at Allansford so it’s a very active, popular group and I would really hate to see it fold. The kids all have a great time and the Scout movement offers some activities that, for many children, they wouldn’t usually experience within their own families. “We meet once a week during school terms and the activities are all loads of fun and they meet new friends and enjoy challenges, camps and lots of other things.” Mrs Drake first joined the Allansford group as a volunteer at the age of 17 and within two years she had become a leader. “It’s a very rewarding role and I’ve loved every moment of it,” she said. “Watching the kids have fun and explore new things has been wonderful but it really is time for me to take Some of the Allansford Cubs with leaders Gayle Drake and Tania Nevill at the Allansford Scout Group a back step. Your chance Help needed to track koalas to Level Up Tracey and Jenny with one of the koalas currently in residence at Mosswood. 2023D

LEADING creative business thinkers will share insights at next month’s Level Up event, to be held in Warrnambool. Warrnambool City mayor Cr Debbie Arnott said the Level Up conference was about encouraging business operators in the south west to unlock their creative super powers. “Level Up 23 is a one-day program that provides business owners with inspiration and ideas to take them to the next level,” Cr Arnott said. “This year, Level Up explores how we can recapture the creativity that comes to us naturally as children but which can sometimes be lost as we journey through life.” And with the ever-evolving intrusion of AI (artificial intelligence) and market disruptors, it’s never been more important to nurture a culture of creativity. Alex Wadelton from The Right-brain Workout leads a stellar list of guest speakers for the event. Alex will be joined by Dani Pearce, CEO and founder of Merry People gum boots and Nick Pearce, co-founder of streetwear clothing social enterprise HoMie. Alex said regaining the confidence to think creatively was a key and that while it was easy to go with the flow, thinking creatively provided people – and businesses – with the opportunity to stand out in a crowd and to have more fun. “Free your mind, drop the ego a bit and don’t worry about saying something stupid. Have fun and you’ll put more smiles on people’s faces,” Alex said. “Creativity is not just for artists and elites, it’s for kids, parents, businesses, everyone.” Alex will also talk about AI and how it might be used. He said AI at times seemed “frightening and scary” but could also be viewed as a tool in the same way as Photoshop and Canva were tools. He said AI might hold the potential for small and medium-sized businesses to compete with larger businesses. Participants will also hear from the best in all things business events – Business Events Victoria. After their morning presentations, Alex, Dani and Nick will host small group workshops in the afternoon, which are not to be missed. The event will be held at Lighthouse Theatre on Tuesday, November 14 from 9am, with workshops set to start at 1.20pm. For tickets and more information head to https://eents.humanitix.com/levelup23.

RESIDENTS across the district are urged to don’t often get planted and those that have been there are become involved in tracking one of Australia’s removed for developments. Our local koala populations are disappearing and that’s a huge cobncern.” most loved icons, the koala. Tracey and Peter Wilson and their band of volunteers at Koroit’s Mosswood Wildlife will launch their very first interactive koala count map at The Pavilion on Sunday, October 15. According to volunteers Bernie Lane and Cathy Finn, the interactive map will provide vital information on the whereabouts of koalas, their habitat, their condition and other details. “The interactive map gives residents the opportunity to report any koala sightings as they occur,” Bernie said. “We want to further highlight the plight of our local koalas and what they are now up against. “They need and have every right to live here and we’re hoping more people will get on board and, together, work to ensure the koalas have a safe and ongoing existence.” The simple-to-use map will allow people to easily record where they saw the koala, what state it was in and what its movements area. They can also add additional information they believe may be of relevance. “As local koala vegetation becomes less and less they tend to move about more in search of food and a new home; by encouraging as many people as possible to use the map we have a better chance of tracking koala movement,” Bernie said. Mosswood Wildlife owner Tracey Wilson is committed to ensuring the future of the koala and, in particular, its habitat in and around Warrnambool. “We’ve seen their habitat diminish immensely in recent years, particularly as developers move in – so very little thought or consideration is given to wildlife in the area,” Tracey said. “Warrnambool is developing at a rapid rate but we really need to pay more attention to the habitat around us. “It seems the city is very anti tall trees because they

Tracey and husband Peter began Mosswood around 17 years ago and in 2019 it became an incorporated association. Their work to not only save the koala population but other threatened and injured wildlife is something to be admired. They work long, voluntary hours tending to the needs of animals, building enclosures and shelters, and working with a team of dedicated volunteers. One of those volunteers, who recently joined the team, is French-born Jenny Galliard who is currently on a 12 month visit to Australia. Travelling solo, 34-year-old Jenny arrived in the country early August and was quick to discover Mosswood on line was searching for voluntary groups that involved animals. “I’m a huge horse lover but I love all animals so when I decided I wanted to come to Australia for my first time I really wanted to become involved in a voluntary organisation like this,” Jenny said. Jenny now spends five days a week at Mosswood tending to the animals and doing any other chores needed each day. “I absolutely love it here,” she said. “I have worked in Equador and Bolivia and in various parts of the United States but this is my first visit to Australia and it’s certainly impressed me. “Who wouldn’t love spending time with beautiful animals like the koala? At the moment we have six very small koalas inside and one in the outdoor enclosure.” With the baby koalas requiring up to six hourly feeds, 24/7, Tracey and Jenny rotate shifts as much as possible. “Yes it is quite a bit of work but I really love it; who wouldn’t? This is such important work to ensure the koala’s future in this country.” The koala interactive map will go live at 10am on Sunday, October 15. Simply scan the QR code on this page to access

Fruit rescue welcomes volunteers

WHEN it comes to giving back to the community, volunteering with a local group or organisation can be extremely rewarding and satisfying. More than 47 local voluntary groups took part in last weekend’s Volunteers Expo at the Emmanuel Centre, including the recently formed ‘Fruit Rescue.’ Fruit Rescue is one of many flexible ways local residents can get involved and make contributions to their community. You choose the days and times that suit you, and you get to take home a share of the fruit from each harvest you attend. Fresh air, good company, making new friends and enjoying gentle exercise – all in a relaxed vibe - is what this group is all about. Fruit Rescue member Courtney Mathew said the goal was simple; to take fruit which was otherwise going to waste and get it to the people who need it. “When I go walking around my neighbourhood I see these trees dripping with fruit and I can see them rotting on the tree and it’s such a shame,” she said. “The three things people can get involved with are offering their trees for us to pick, volunteering to go out and do the picking, or for organisations like Food Share who can distribute the fruit. “We go where the picks are so we need people across Warrnambool to share their trees and share their time and in return we’re offering free fruit, so it’s winwin. “If you sign up before November 1, you

can go in the running to win one of 10 fruit trees. “We really hope the community embraces it and we have a great summer.” Warrnambool mayor Debbie Arnott encouraged everyone to learn more

about the wide range of volunteering roles available. “Volunteering is such a special thing you can do to help your community and the people who call it home. It only takes a little bit of your time, but the impact you can have can be profound,” she said.

“When you help other people, it makes you feel good too, and for many people, volunteering can be one of the most rewarding things they ever do.” For more information on how to become a volunteer simply head to fruitrescue. org.au.

Tasty start for seniors

SENIOR citizens from across the Warrnambool district enjoyed a tasty and sociable start to their week on Monday.

More than 100 special guests enjoyed a ‘high tea’ at the Archie Graham Centre on Monday to kick off the 2023 Warrnambool Seniors Festival in style. The centre was filled with much laughter, conversation and tasty treats as guests shared stories and new friendships were made. According to Clare Vaughan from the Archie Graham Centre, the day was a huge success. “Everyone seemed to have had a lovely time judging by the smiles and the conversations in the room,” Ms Vaughan said. “It was a lovely way for some of our seniors to start

their week; we have so many activities planned for their special month.” One of the guests at Monday’s high tea, Roseno Guiney, made special mention of the work of centre volunteers. “We have all had a lovely day and we’d like to thank the volunteers who did a marvellous job,” Ms Guiney said. “The food was absolutely delicious – I usually only have a piece of toast for lunch so this was a real treat.” Warrnambool’s seniors’ festival program is jam packed with activities, excursions and plenty for residents to see and do throughout October. For more information head to the Warrnambool City Council website and follow the links.

Senator Raff Ciccone enjoyed looking over the restored shed with Moyne mayor Cr Karen Foster and Cr Damian Gleeson.

Goods shed restored A painstaking restoration has been underway since mid-year – replacing wall cladding, spouting and repairing original roller doors, painting and repairs to the timber platform. Where possible, materials have been repaired like for like, with some fixtures specially made in Queensland and some from specially milled timber. Mayor Cr Karen Foster said the process had been long, but worth it. “We’ve gone from a run-down dilapidated shed secured behind a cyclone fence to a beautifully restored piece of railway history in the heart of town,” she said. “We’ve worked closely with Heritage Victoria to ensure we maintain the shed’s history and our contractors BDH

Constructions have done an incredible job. It looks amazing.” Cr Foster said the next step was activation of the area, followed by internal works to make it a useable space. “What that is used for we don’t know yet – we will determine that with the community and of course in line with the strict Heritage guidelines, but I’m excited to see this first stage of works completed,” she said. The $443,000 project was funded with $220,000 from council’s third phase allocation of the Federal Government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Fund and a contribution from council’s budget. Cr Foster officially unveiled the works with Federal Labor Senator Raff Ciccone on Friday. Senator Ciccone said the restoration of Port Fairy’s railway goods shed was a great example of the Commonwealth Government working with local councils to deliver benefits to regional communities.

Disability report findings welcomed

SOUTH West Disability Network (SWDN) agencies have welcomed recommendations from the Disability Royal Commission, saying they are committed to implementing practices which enhance the lives of people they support.

SWDN includes 14 south west-based disability service organisations which have reaffirmed their commitment to zero-tolerance to abuse and neglect in disability settings. The Disability Royal Commission released its final report on September 29 after hearing harrowing evidence of neglect, abuse and exploitation of Australians with disabilities. SWDN chairperson and Cooinda Terang chief executive Janice Harris said the agencies looked forward to hearing the government response to the recommendations. “We welcome the Royal Commission report and the recommendations to improve the safety of people with a disability in all settings whether it be in their own home, community or being supported by a disability support provider,” Ms Harris said. “As a network we are committed to training our staff in all aspects of providing quality supports and supporting

each other with implementing best practice across our services. “While the report and recommendations will involve more changes within the sector, we will support any recommendations that enhance the lives of people with a disability and provide enhanced safeguards to ensure that people with a disability are safe from all forms of abuse.” SWDN member and Southern Stay CEO Paul Lougheed said it had been difficult to hear the stories coming out of the Royal Commission over the last few years. “Abuse of people with a disability is abhorrent and has been happening in a range of settings over many years,” Mr Lougheed said. “It can’t continue. People with a disability have the right to live the life they choose and to be supported in a safe environment. “The disability sector and the broader community needs to reflect, learn and improve on what has occurred.” Mr Lougheed said Southern Stay and the other SWDN members were committed to implementing and improving practices which safeguard the rights of people they support. “We have adopted our peak body’s zero tolerance (to abuse and neglect) framework and aim to ensure that the

mistakes of the past do not occur in the future,” he said. “All our staff are committed to this approach. “We know that the government is equally committed to safeguarding people’s rights and look forward to hearing their response to the Commission report early in 2024.” The report contains 222 recommendations covering housing, education and employment. It includes ways to improve laws, policies, structures and practices to help people with disabilities to live free from violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation. The Commissioners have different views about whether settings exclusively for people with disability should be phased out over time. Some Commissioners regard the separation of people with disability from their peers and community at large as ‘segregation’ and incompatible with an inclusive society. Other Commissioners consider that separate schools, accommodation or employment for people with disability should not necessarily be characterised as ‘segregated’ settings, depending on a more nuanced consideration of the specific circumstances. The Royal Commissioners have recommended that the Australian Government respond to the recommendations by March 31, 2024.

Prepare for fire season

AGRICULTURE Victoria’s new Fire Preparedness Toolkit is designed to assist farmers and land managers to prepare their farm for the fire season.

Agriculture Victoria’s Kylie Macreadie said the toolkit contains checklists and templates to help farmers prepare their farm business, livestock, staff, and infrastructure ahead of the season. “The checklists and templates published in the toolkit were developed with input from farmers,” Ms Macreadie said. “Learning from the experiences of farmers that have been impacted by fire, we have identified key things that make it harder to recover after a very traumatic bushfire experience. “For example, having a documented farm asset inventory can greatly assist in assessing loss and damage in the aftermath of a fire. “Similarly, ensuring your farm documents are securely stored (on the cloud or offfarm) and on-hand, will help ease the pressure when it comes to seeking financial support or making insurance claims.” Farm Fire Preparedness free webinar will step through the newly available toolkit and will be held next Thursday, October 19. Topics will include farm asset inventories, fire preparedness checklists and action

plan, saving farm documents to the ‘cloud’ or off-farm and updating PIC and NLIS data. The Fire Preparedness Toolkit and other bushfire resources are available on the

Agriculture Victoria website and should Register for the Zoom webinar by clicking be used in conjunction with existing https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81060024131. information and resources from the More information about the webinar Country Fire Authority (CFA) and your local is available on the Agriculture Victoria council. website at agriculture.vic.gov.au/events.

Wannon Rooms host Congress THE Wannon function rooms became a hive of activity and concentration last weekend. The venue played host to the Warrnambool Bridge Club’s annual Congress. More than 60 players enjoyed the competition on Saturday while on Sunday 40 players returned to the tables. Players enjoyed catering by Riverview’s Kaylene Dart and while the numbers were well down since COVID, the event still attracted players from across Victoria and South Australia. Best local results on Saturday included first place to Denis Fitzpatrick and Helen Scarborough and second place to Tarsh Hogan and Sally McDonald in the restricted pairs. In the Swiss pairs, Paula Hillis and Aileen Park were 4th overall and best local pair while John Turner and Patsy Ryan were the most improved local pair. In the teams’ event on Sunday, Linda Picone, John Sarena, Janet Attrill and

WARRNAMBOOL BRIDGE CLUB WARRNAMBOOL Bridge Club members meet regularly at Brauerander Reserve to play friendly duplicate bridge competitions.

Penny Thomas were 4th overall and best local team. Kathy and Dennis Hilder, along with Marie Bird and Anne Ryan, were the most improved local team.

The Warrnambool Bridge Club invites any card players interested in learning the most popular card game in the world to ring Peter Cooke 0427 426 226 to register their interest in lessons next year.

Count birds and help science RESIDENTS young and old are encouraged to take part in one of Australia’s biggest citizen science projects next week, with the Great Aussie Bird Count running from October 16-22. Now in its 10th year, participants spend 20 minutes outside and log all of the birds they see online via the dedicated Aussie Bird Count app or on the website. The app has a built-in “bird finder” tool to help participants identify birds they’re unsure of and they can complete as many counts as they like during the week. Warrnambool mayor Cr Debbie Arnott said the data would be used by Birdlife Australia to help fill knowledge gaps and better understand Australia’s diverse birdlife and how it changes over time. “Citizen science projects like this can be really important in helping organisations like BirdLife with up-to-date knowledge of birds and ecosystems,” Cr Arnott said. “Many of us would see birds every day and barely give them a second thought, so as well as helping science, the Aussie Bird Count is all about building a greater appreciation in the community for our local birdlife. “If you sit for 20 minutes and just watch the birds, you might be surprised at just how fun and relaxing it can be, and I’m sure there will be those out there who catch the bug and make bird watching a new past-time.” Last year in Warrnambool, over 7600 individual birds from 75 different species

were identified as part of the Aussie Bird Count, with the most common bird spotted the New Holland Honeyeater. Interestingly, this bird was seen in Warrnambool three times more often than the state average. Rarer sightings included the Australian Hobby, Crested Pigeon, Forest Raven, Great Egret, Straw-necked Ibis, Swamp Harrier, Whistling Kite and White-plumed Honeyeater, which were only spotted once each. Threatened species in Warrnambool include the Musk Duck, the Blue-billed Duck and the Pacific Gull, so any sightings of these would be particularly beneficial. Birdlife Warrnambool Secretary Graham Dixon said there was no shortage of local places to see a variety of birds. “Lake Pertobe is the one that’s accessible to a lot of people, and also at the Merri mouth, you’ll see Black-faced Cormorants, Terns and quite a few other seabirds,” he said. “Anywhere around town with native vegetation, you’ll find some good spots. “Often Birdlife are trying to save endangered birds, but the first question of course is: how do you know it’s endangered? “Some birds we don’t want like the Common Minor, which is an introduced species. Is it spreading? So getting a baseline is important.” He said that Birdlife Warrnambool was a fun, social group to be a part of. “About two or three times a year we’ll have a camp-out and go somewhere further afield in

the state. I’m a hobby photographer, so birds provide action, they’re colourful, so they are very good subjects for photographing.” To find out more and register visit https:// aussiebirdcount.org.au/ And if you’d like to learn more about other citizen science projects in Warrnambool you can be a part of, visit www.warrnambool.vic. gov.au/online-projects To learn more about Birdlife Warrnambool visit https://birdlife.org.au/groups/birdlifewarrnambool/.

Charity Wait times a tooth ache fundraiser WARRNAMBOOL’S public dental system hit the spotlight in parliament recently.

THE Crystal Lee Foundation is hoping for a strong turn-out at its next fundraising event. A special high tea is currently being organised, to be held on Sunday October 22 at The Wharf Restaurant in Port Fairy. Guests will join host Liam Fitzgerald for an afternoon of fine food, music and entertainment. Hear inspiring stories of local people doing great things in their community, including Tracey Wilson from Mosswood Wildlife, Ben Pohlner from Volcano Produce and Don McDonald from Friends of St Brigids. Music will be provided by talented local Zoe Borthwick and all attendees will receive a bag full of information from various local groups. The event will start at 3.30pm and will follow a ‘Look to Local’ theme. Tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite, with all proceeds supporting the Crystal Lee Foundation. The foundation was founded in 2019 to fill a gap in care and support services for young people, from birth to 24 years of age, and their families across south west Victoria who are impacted by a cancer diagnosis.

Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell said she believed the public dental system in Warrnambool was in a “shocking state” after the Australian Dental Association (Vic. Branch) revealed the area’s average wait time for general dental care was 38.1 months. This figure is a threefold increase on the 13.8 months that the average waiting time was in 2014. In addition, the average wait time is also over a year longer than the current statewide average of 16.9 months. “In the three years the patient is waiting, they will often endure extreme pain and I have been contacted by constituents who describe their suffering to me,” Ms Britnell said. “We are talking about important treatments to relieve the pain that the almost 4,000 South West Coast patients on the waiting list face. “Pain that prevents them from eating certain foods, keeps them up at night and impacts their wider health. Historically, South West Coast has not been an outlier for dental waiting lists.” Ms Britnell claimed that during the last Liberal Government, waiting times for general dental care from the public dental system in South West Coast were 14 months, only one month higher than Victoria’s statewide average. In the past decade this waiting list has increased almost 300 percent and is now 19 months higher than the state average. “The pandemic is not an excuse,” said Ms Britnell.

“The wait time in South West Coast almost doubled between 2015 and 2019, to more than two years. “I have spoken with dentists in my area, and facilities are not the issue. Warrnambool has five dental treatment chairs, yet currently less than two chairs

can be used on a full-time basis due to a lack of staff.” According to Ms Britnell’s figures, in 2014 over 9,000 patients in South West Coast were treated, however, this total is now under 7,000 patients per year.

Get on your bike NEXT Wednesday is National Ride2Work Day, with a free breakfast on offer in the Warrnambool CBD. National Ride2Work Day, to be held on Wednesday October 18, is Australia’s biggest celebration of commuter cycling. Whether you ride to work regularly or it’s something you’ve been thinking about for a while, National Ride2Work Day is all about supporting and celebrating bike riding and is many benefits. “Spring is the perfect time to get back on the bike and enjoy the health, financial and environmental benefits of riding for transport,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Debbie Arnott said. “If you’ve thought it might be nice to ride to work but you just needed that extra little nudge to get you going, this is the perfect day. “The good thing about Ride2Work Day, especially if it’s the first time you’ve ridden to work, is that you won’t be alone. Across Warrnambool, and across Australia, people everywhere will be riding to work.” Cr Arnott said while there were lots of people who walk or ride a bike for fun, the day was all about encouraging everyone (where possible) to leave their cars at home and ride or walk for transport too. “At council, we’re constantly improving infrastructure to make Warrnambool more pedestrian and bike friendly to help make it easier for people to choose sustainable transport options,” Cr Arnott said. Whether you ride, walk or drive part-way and walk the rest, everyone embracing active transport is invited to a free community breakfast from 7am until 9am in the South West TAFE courtyard (enter via Kepler Street) on Wednesday. To learn more about National Ride2Work Day and to register your ride, visit https://bicyclenetwork. com.au/rides-and-events/ride2work/.

Everything about bees and their environment

It’s swarm season!

If you see a swarm, you should mainStay back and keep others away from tain a safe distance from the cluster the swarm, as if the bees may be hun- of bees, and keep pets, children and gry due to using up their food stores, others away from the bees. A registered, insured and professional and become defensive if disturbed. beekeeper may sometimes be available at short notice to remove the swarm.

What’s a swarm?

Why do bees swarm?

Swarming is a natural process in the life of a honey bee (Apis mellifera) colony. A honey bee swarm occurs when a large group of honey bees leaves an established colony with the original queen bee, and flies off to establish a new colony, essentially creating two from one. Swarming is a natural method of propagation that usually occurs in late spring and early summer and begins in the warmer hours of the day. A new queen is raised in the original hive and that colony builds up numbers again, following the departure of the swarm.

Honey bee swarms may contain several hundred to several thousand worker bees, a few drones and one queen. The old queen and about half the worker bees take off as a group, and the swarming bees fly around briefly and then cluster on a tree limb, shrub or other object. Clusters usually remain stationary for an hour to a few days, depending on weather and the time needed to find a new nest site by scouting bees. When a suitable location for the new colony - such as a hollow tree, a wall cavity, chimney or even a mailbox or cubby house - is found the cluster breaks up and flies to it; the bees depart as quickly as they arrived, and sometimes aren’t even noticed by passersby. Swarm of honey bees on a branch

Are swarms dangerous? Honey bee swarms are usually less dangerous than an established colony of bees. Swarming honey bees feed prior to swarming, reducing their ability to sting. Additionally, bees that are away from the vicinity of their nest (offspring and Bee swarm in flight before settling on food stores) are less defensive and are unlikely to sting unless provoked. a branch

What should I do if I see a swarm?

Swarm removal Swarm removal is good preventative action to avoid bees setting up home in a structure from which it may be impossible or expensive to remove them from at a later date. Instead, the bees can be managed in a registered hive and cared for, as for any ‘livestock’, for biosecurity and disease prevention, health and safety protocols, and so bees and people can live in harmony!

Where do swarms go? Bella Life. Clients are invited to bring their carers along on the Big La Bella Bus free of charge next week to acknowledge the work and dedication of those who care for loved ones at home. La Bella Life managing director Cherieanne Carmichael said it’s an important week on the calendar to recognise all the tireless work done behind closed doors by carers. “So much of the work family and friends do to support loved ones as they age is not seen. We so often hear from families who have been caring for their aging families and they’re exhausted,” Ms Carmichael said.

“As much as our home care packages are for the clients, they’re also for the carers and support network around these people to provide respite and relief.” Unfortunately, carer burnout happens far too often and while it’s through no fault of the carer or the elderly person, sometimes the task just gets to be too much to bear alone. “We encourage everyone over 65 years of age to get an aged care assessment and see what assistance they may be eligible for,” urged Ms Carmichael. “Statistics show that by seeking help and getting respite to support the carer, it is more likely that the

role is different and that carers often feel a sense of satisfaction as caring is a meaningful way for a family member or friend to show their love and support for the person they’re caring for…knowing that you are making a positive difference can be very rewarding.” La Bella Life invites clients to book a trip and bring their carers free of charge to join the Big La Bella Bus during Carers Week. The bus will take a scenic trip to Camperdown, leaving Flagstaff Hill at 11am next Tuesday, October 17 and Thursday, October 19. To book your place on the bus phone 4505 2220.

DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT by MLA’s YARDING 946 CHANGE 321 more

A large increase in numbers for this week’s Mortlake cattle market where 946 head were yarded. Both cows and trade numbers doubled and there was also a general improvement in quality. There was a good mix of dairy and beef breeds in the cow lineup and better quality on offer more so for the heavy end. The bullock run was dominated by manufacturing types with quality in places. Not all regular buyers operated to full capacity on an offering that consisted of 230 grown cattle, 390 trade and 310 cows with 18 grown bulls. Feeder interest was subdued and store competition was cautious over the trade cattle due to the price reduction. The market showed resilience to be firm over most categories with the exception of the yearling heifers which were softer by 15c/kg. Trade steers and heifers made from 190c to 280c/kg. Grown cattle topped at 260c/kg and manufacturing steers sold from 145c to 212c/kg. Better type beef cows sold from 150c to 182c/kg with the medium weights selling between 120c and 145c/kg. Dairy cows were generally selling between 140c and 160c/kg. Beef bulls sold to 200c and the dairy bulls to 180c/kg. Market reporter. Chris. Agnew

WA R R N A M B O O L’ S Western Region All Abilities team are state champions. The team, coached by local Marg Morgan, went through last weekend’s state championships undefeated and were crowned 2023 state champions. The state titles were held in Melbourne and attracted several strong sides from across Victoria. After four faultless games throughout the tournament, Western Region defeated Barwon in the grand final to take premiership honours.

State champions

Eels shine on court THE West Vic Eels have shone bright on the netball courts at last weekend’s VACSAL (Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association) championships.

The state-wide championships, held in Torquay over the two days, attracted teams from across the state for the senior netball/ football carnival. The Banyul Warri Sporting Precinct was alive with colour and excitement as communities gathered for what was a highly competitive yet friendly tournament played in good spirits. West Vic Eels co-coach Katie Burt said her A grade side played “outstanding” all weekend and only narrowly missed a grand final berth. “I’ve been involved with the Eels for 18 years and have thoroughly enjoyed it,” Katie said. “They are a very talented side and last weekend I believe any one of the four teams in the semis could have won on the day; with only three goals separating each side until the grand final. “Our team had never played together before so I'm pumped to see what they can do if they stick together." Three Eels, Zali Mifsud, Teagen Edwards and Jaya Blandthorn were all named in the Team of the Carnival. “There’s so much spirit at the VACSAL carnivals; it’s like nothing I’ve ever been involved with I netball. It just feels like home to me so I keep going back. “Congratulations to Gina’s Dream Team on winning the carnival. They’re a great team with an amazing list of talent.”

Dragons at Masters Games

THE South C Dragons (SCD) dragon boat club is this week competing in the 19th Australian Masters Games. The Games, which began in Adelaide last Saturday and will conclude this weekend, will see members of the Warrnambool Dragonboat Club compete on the water in dragon boating events on the final three days of competition. This will be the first time the club has registered its own team for the Games – in the past, members have participated at regattas in composite teams. Twelve SCD members will travel to Adelaide for the event. For the Masters Games, the competition teams comprise of 10 or 20 paddlers, a sweep and a drummer, and the age range is 40+ years and 60+ years in open, women’s and BFS events. The dragon boating fraternity also provides opportunities at regattas and events for people who have had a cancer diagnosis (particularly breast cancer) where lymphedema may be a side effect from treatments. It has been shown that paddling is beneficial for upper body fitness and the camaraderie is also helpful for mental health.

South C Dragons is always looking for new members. The club is a welcoming and inclusive one, involving men and women from a range of diverse backgrounds. Dragon boating is not always about racing and regatta. Members enjoy the social aspect of having fun on the water with a group of friends while keeping active. “Members are encouraged to participate at a level they feel comfortable with,” club member Glenda said. “Social membership is also available to past paddlers and friends who may wish to remain connected with the club (conditions apply).” This year, with assistance from the Warrnambool City Council, the club is looking forward to securing its 14-metre long boat in a new, purpose-built shed closer to the river where members usually paddle. The club currently has two trainee sweeps and two coaches upskilling for the future. It also hopes to encourage more opportunities for members to enjoy paddling on various waterways and with other clubs. For further information about dragon boating in Warrnambool contact Glenda on 0417 350 077 or Victoria on 0427 659 796.
