THE Lions Club of Warrnambool is hoping visitors to Gateway Plaza will help spread some Christmas cheer this season. As has become tradition, the Lions organisation will once again sell Christmas cakes in the lead-up to Christmas Day as one of their major fundraisers. From next Monday, a stall will be set up inside Warrnambool’s Gateway Plaza in the hope that visitors will purchase a cake or pudding, or make a donation that will help others in need.

Fast track your hospitality skills

A NEW hospitality passport course at South West TAFE will help to address ongoing chronic staff shortages across the region.

The three-day express short course was designed to give students all the certificates needed to gain work in the hospitality industry faster than they can make a cappuccino. They will be trained in food service and customer service skills, how to prepare food and coffee orders, and complete a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA). It is the first time the express combined course has been offered by South West TAFE in Warrnambool. Hospitality trainer Hayley Dowling said participants would gain all the essential skills needed for an express entry into the hospitality industry. “We’ve focussed on the most relevant key points that employers are looking for and students will get the basics in safe food handling, RSA and some great coffee and food and beverage skills,” she said. “We’ve been speaking to industry and they need people who have these basic skills.” Ms Dowling said local hospitality businesses needed a big influx of staff. “It is really tough for industry at the moment so we hope we can help them to recruit some new people,” she said. The course is designed to give anyone enough knowledge and skills to get a start in hospitality and is particularly well suited to senior secondary students and school leavers. “A lot of school leavers will be looking to

take a gap year so having this qualification under their belt will make them job ready,” Ms Dowling said. A former Melbourne restaurateur, Ms Dowling worked in the industry for more than 20 years before moving to Warrnambool three years ago and shifting into training. “I pivoted my career and decided to become a hospitality trainer,” she said. “I really enjoyed when I did my training and thought it was something I could do and love. “I love working with young people and it’s a fun industry to be in. I want to help people to see a different side of the industry and pursue a career where they could make a good living and have a bit of fun.” The course will be held on December 7-14 at the Warrnambool campus. More information can be found at https://shortcourses.swtafe.vic.edu.au/ courses/1001430-hospitality-passport.

It is hoped a new hospitality course at TAFE can help with staff shortages across the region. 2023E

Late night shopping PORT Fairy retailers are well and truly in the Christmas spirit, with many taking part in a ‘late night shopping’ event tonight. The doors of several businesses around town will be open until 8pm tonight (Friday, November 24) with some great instore treats, lucky door prizes and special discounts. Late night shopping, presented by Love Local Moyne, encourages people to do their Christmas shopping at local businesses this festive season. Moyne Shire mayor Ian Smith said the Love Local Moyne

campaign was all about “celebrating the fantastic businesses in the municipality and supporting them”. “Shoppers can discover hidden gems, enjoy exclusive deals and soak up the festive atmosphere with live entertainment and the Young Makers Market,” he said. “Having shops open until 8pm will mean there’s abit of extra time to head out and pick up some Christmas gifts locally. “There will be a carnival feel to the evening, centred around Fiddlers Green, which the whole town can enjoy.”

Young farmer overcame ‘scam fear’ ALEX Lysov feared a job offer on an Australian dairy farm may have been a scam, but it ended up changing his life. The Ukrainian native had been looking for opportunities in Canada and hadn’t considered Australia until he saw an online advertisement. “It isn’t easy going through recruitment agencies when trying to work overseas,” he said. “One day I was looking on a Ukrainian job search website and saw the ad for an Australian farm. I thought it was a joke, some kind of a scam, but I applied and after two weeks did an interview, got a visa and came to Australia.” That was in late 2018 and today Mr Lysov and his wife Oksana have been granted Australian residency and will apply for citizenship early next year. After learning the practical side of the dairy industry, he is now being supported by a DemoDAIRY Foundation scholarship to study a Certificate IV in accounting and bookkeeping at South West TAFE to boost his knowledge of the business side of farming. Mr Lysov grew up in Ukraine and has a Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering

in Agriculture, although it is not recognised in Australia. While a student, he worked in Great Britain picking peas and beans and after university moved to Denmark where he had his first experience working on a dairy farm. “I grew up in a city similar to Geelong with no connection to dairy farming but I really like to work with animals,” Mr Lysov said. “I didn’t know anything about cows when I started but I learnt everything by practice and from reading to get some of the theory behind it because I found it so interesting. “It’s very rewarding to work in the food industry.” He later worked as a field services adviser with a big dairy processor in the Ukraine before moving to the United States to work on a cropping farm, mainly to get practice working on tractors and in the fields. After that he returned to Ukraine and tried to find a suitable job. He had an option as an advisor but at the same time found an opportunity on a farm owned by Warrnambool-based company, Midfield Meats.

After overcoming his initial scepticism, he worked at the Woolsthorpe farm for four years and was promoted to secondin-charge. “It was a very good experience for me,” he said. “I got my residency and could choose something else but decided to stay in the dairy industry. “When I got my residency, I decided to study as I felt it would help me to find a better job. I wanted to build my knowledge about budgets and the economic side of the farm. I can do all the practical work, but I wanted to know how to do the budgets.” Mr Lysov now works with Saputo in a similar field services officer role as he performed in his home country. He plans to study an accounting diploma next year and hopes to continue on to a bachelor degree, possibly in commerce. His long-term goal is to be a financial advisor for dairy farms. Mr Lysov, 36, has fallen in love with the Warrnambool region – which is a far cry

from his preconceived idea of Australia as a hot, desert country. The DemoDAIRY Foundation scholarship has made studying much easier. “When I started, I had to study with my old laptop in my bedroom. I didn’t have a desk or anything. Now we’ve rented a house with a spare room and the scholarship enabled me to buy a desk, chair and a new laptop. “I can now shut the door and concentrate so it’s much easier to study.” He has also retained some of the scholarship money to spend next year during his diploma. DemoDAIRY Foundation (DDF) is now seeking applications for 2024 scholarships. The closing date for DDF and Powell Legacy Fund school leaver scholarships and also DDF grants is tomorrow, Saturday November 25. To apply now visit https://www. demodairy.com.au/application/ or contact DDF secretary Ian Teese on 0427 358 987.

Free entry to Flagstaff Hill FLAGSTAFF Hill is throwing open its doors to locals, with anyone from the Warrnambool City Council area able to enjoy free daytime entry until Christmas. Over the same period, locals can also enjoy free access to the Tales of the Shipwreck Coast sound and light show when they attend with at least one paying visitor. Warrnambool City Council CEO Andrew Mason encouraged locals to take the opportunity to rediscover Flagstaff Hill. “Members of the community were encouraged to provide feedback on the Flagstaff Hill Vision and Opportunities Plan, so this could be a good way to

reacquaint yourself with Flagstaff Hill,” he said. “Aside from that, about a third of the visitors to Warrnambool are people who are visiting friends and family so when they are asking for recommendations of what to see and do, we want locals to have a fresh view of Flagstaff Hill in their mind. “Flagstaff Hill has an average rating of 4.5 out of five stars based on over 1300 Google reviews so while council is looking at the future vision and direction of Flagstaff Hill, visitors are telling us that there’s still a lot to enjoy about the venue today.” Mr Mason believes this is a great opportunity for locals to experience Flagstaff Hill first-hand. “Check out the amazing collection of shipwreck

artefacts, including the Loch Ard Peacock valued at over $4 million, climb to the top of the 19th century lighthouse and visit the tearooms and try the best scones in Warrnambool,” Mr Mason said. “Alternatively, take along a picnic and enjoy the sweeping views of Lady Bay.” Residents will be identified as local by the postcode on their drivers licence or suitable identification accompanied by a utility bill. Children of patrons will be identified by being indicated on a Medicare card. Postcode numbers considered local are Warrnambool 3280, Bushfield 3281, Dennington 3280, Allansford 3277, Illowa 3282, Woodford 3281 and Yangery 3283.

Work begins on township renewal

STAGE two of Koroit’s township renewal project got underway earlier this week, with preliminary drainage works started. Moyne Shire mayor Ian Smith said it was an exciting step forward for the project. “The drainage works are a critical component of the next phase of works in stage two, which is the completion of the Bluestone footpath from IGA to the corner,” Cr Smith said. “It’s great to see this work getting underway so we can then start on the footpath in late January. “This has been on the top of our list for a long time, so it’s great to get it moving.” Contactors have begun work on the northern side of Commercial Road, between Deta Hair and the Woolsthorpe Road intersection, which is expected to take around three weeks. Works will start at the Woolsthorpe Road end and progressively work westwards toward Deta Hair over the three-week period. Crews will be undertaking trenching work in parking bays, which will be closed and reopened progressively as the works move down the street. Trenching will need to cross to the southern side of Commercial Road in three locations towards the end of the project. One lane of Commercial Road will be closed during construction work hours, with traffic controllers in place to keep delays to a minimum. The road will be reopened when crews are not working. Detours are not being put in place because of the short length and progressive nature of the works.

Pedestrian footpath access to properties and businesses will remain open. Cr Smith said staff from council’s project management office would work with business and property owners to keep them informed of any interruptions to access. “We’ll also be keeping the community informed though our website and social media,” he said. “I’d encourage anyone interested to head to www.moyne.vic.gov.au/projects

and click into Koroit Township renewal for more information about the project and the next steps.” Cr Smith said council was still waiting to hear the outcome of an application to the federal government’s Growing Regions Fund. He said if that application was successful, it would allow for bluestone footpaths, street furniture and trees on both sides of Commercial Road and for footpath, parking and road works in High Street.

“We are completing the footpath on the north side of Commercial Road based on community feedback,” he said. “We hope to hear about the application soon so we can continue with work and complete all of Commercial Road between High Street and the Commercial Hotel and in High Street from Commercial Road to the caravan park.” If the application is not successful, council will explore options for the next steps.

Free green waste disposal

MOYNE Shire residents are encouraged to clean up around their homes before the summer fire season – and take advantage of free green waste disposal this weekend.

Residents will be able to dispose of lawn clippings, branches and vegetation for free as part of the Shire’s summer fire preparedness program. Following on from three weeks of free green waste disposal after September’s storm, council is offering another free drop off across the shire this weekend, November 25-26. Moyne Shire mayor Ian Smith said now is the time to reduce fuel loads around homes. “The CFA recommend reduction of flammable vegetation around a house. This significantly increases the likelihood of house survival by

minimising the impact of radiant heat and ember attack during a bushfire,” Cr Smith said. “This is a great chance to clear up the garden without waste facility fees, before the hot weather kicks in.” Green waste can be disposed of at no charge this weekend at several Moyne Shire transfer stations including Killarney (this Sunday between 10am4pm). Conditions apply, including no mixed loads (green garden waste only); limbs and branches up to 30cm in diameter; no commercial operators or commercial loads accepted; and trucks will not be permitted. Residents with questions relating to green waste disposal can call council on 1300 65 65 64 or visit www.moyne. vic.gov.au/tips.

Folkie line-up grows Hally’s Run Walk this weekend

PORT Fairy Folk Festival has announced even more artists for its March long weekend event, which will see tens of thousands of music lovers descend upon Port Fairy. Among the latest guests to join the vibrant line-up is Icelandic singer songwriter Syayar Knutur, who will share traditional and contemporary folk songs as part of the Small Halls tour presented by Woodford Folk Festival, hitting the road with local folk group The Maes. Continuing its tradition of supporting Australian artists, Port Fairy Folk Festival will celebrate the songs and stories of Isabel Rumble, Oceanique, Opelousas, The Pleasures, Queen of Hearts mariachi band along with local south west Victorian stars Billy Barker, GK of Find Your Voice Choir and Doctor & The Apologies. Following on from winning Music Victoria’s Best Regional Festival Award for the second year running, the festival is honoured to welcome back festival favourites 19-Twenty, Brian Nankervis, Charles Jenkins, Hussy Hicks and The Maes, plus a variety of roving entertainment and activities for music

lovers of all ages. Adding a taste of the world, local artists Gamelan DanAnda, Jarabi Band, and Lian Husi Timor will take to the Port Fairy stages in an enriching program of elevating songs, rhythms and culture. Port Fairy Folk Festival program director Justin Rudge said the event was shaping up to be a sensational celebration of songs and stories by the seaside. “Port Fairy is a destination for lovers of music and culture, that sees musicians from across the globe come together to share their music with our loyal audience over the March long weekend,” Mr Rudge said. “The 2024 event is our 47th festival and features Australian debuts, emerging artists, and international stars covering folk traditions and contemporary culture in music. “If you haven’t purchased a ticket yet to the biggest festival by the mighty Southern Ocean, now is the time,” he said. The 2024 Port Fairy Folk Festival will also feature entertainment and activities for the family, markets and food stalls, and the popular village program.

Don’t miss Autumn Leaves

TALENTED local artist Claire Chatfield will “Working with recycled materials, there is always this month open her second solo exhibition hope that through the death of the old, the seeds of in Warrnambool since moving to the area the new are born.” The exhibition will be officially opened next Thursday two years ago.

Ms Chatfield moved back to Victoria from Lismore from 5pm-7pm, with visits welcome from 12 noon to NSW in 2019 where she had been living and exhibiting 4pm daily. The Merri View Gallery can be found at 4 Coramba her art for over a decade. Earlier this year she had an installation in the window Court, Warrnambool. space at the Timor Street market which featured her art and upcycling products. In 2023 she won several prizes for her art locally and at Queenscliff’s Sacred Edge Festival. She has also exhibited in group shows in Melbourne and Koroit this year and is a member of the Warrnambool Artist Society where she exhibits regularly. Her most recent exhibition, ‘Autumn Leaves,’ will open at the Merri View Gallery next Thursday, November 30. The exhibition will feature ceramic, sculpture, wearable art, prints and drawings reflecting the artist’s journey through great change, both personally and in the world. “Autumn Leaves examines the death process that begins in the autumn of life; of grief for what is lost and past, and sadness at the destruction of our environment,” Ms Chatfield said.

Britnell highlights roads REGIONAL lives continue to be placed at risk according to Member for South West Coast Roma Britnell. According to Ms Britnell, the state government has “fallen 25 per cent short of its own road repair target” as revealed by the Department of Transport and Planning’s latest annual report. The report states the government only treated nine million square meters of rural and regional roads – 25.6 percent down on its 2022-23 target of 12.14 million square meters. In comparison, the targets for suburban roads have been met according to Ms Britnell. “The Labor Government has been cutting the road maintenance budget year by year, as a result our roads are in an appalling state,” Ms Britnell said. “This city-centric Labor Government is falling short of its own road repair target. The level of disregard beggars belief. “Without a sufficient resurfacing and resealing program, the deterioration of our roads will only accelerate.” Ms Britnell recently raised in parliament the “perilous state of roads” across the South West Coast, highlighting the dangers regional commuters face every day. “We have a city-centric Labor Government with no plan to address this issue,” she said.

While Port Fairy doesn’t have a sheep section, breeders are able to show their best at the Warrnambool, Koroit and Noorat shows. While some shows have seen recent declines in entries across sheep and cattle, it appeared sheep numbers have continued to buck the trend and remain vibrant. Last Saturday’s Noorat Show was no exception, with a record 100 entries received via 18 exhibitors – with 11 breeds represented. This included Aussie Whites, Corriedale, English Leicester, Hampshire Down, Poll Dorset, Romney, Suffolk, Southdown, South Suffolk, Texel and White Suffolk. Lions’ assistance continues COMMUNITY assistance remains at the fore in all of our district Lions Clubs. This is acerbated by the present financial climate and programs such as meals-on-wheels, elderly care and Lion assistance to the elderly and the needy. Many other programs are continuing despite the approaching festive and new year periods. Port Fairy-Belfast Lions have donated an endowment grant of $500 to each of their two schools to assist with their end of year recognition of student scholarship and achievement. An afternoon tea was held at Belfast House with Lion Makka entertaining with guitar and song. Another afternoon is being planned for Belfast and Moyneyana homes for the elderly and often lonely residents. The club is also busy arranging its festive season activities which raise the funds necessary to assist their community and humanitarian efforts, such as their usual Christmas hamper raffles and their 38th annual art show to be held from December 28 to January 6. A public opening night will be held on December 27. The January market day events such as crayfish spins, Devonshire teas, and Australia Day breakfast will continue. Koroit’s big moment is fast approaching with the opening of its barbecue shelter and rail trail facilities on Saturday. Their efforts in the former railway precinct are to be commended. Koroit and MacArthur lions clubs are both planning special occasions to mark 50 years of service to their communities and would be delighted to hear from any past members Warrnambool Lions Club have completed a very successful and rewarding year with their eye health programs in schools and despite being busy with other community activities are already scheduling their in-school program for next year with a number of district schools indicating their willingness to be involved in this wonderful save sight program. Warrnambool, as with other clubs, are now selling their famous Lions Christmas cakes and puddings which raise funds for Health and Welfare programs, especially eye health. Members will man a facility at Gateway Plaza to not only sell cakes but to provide information about other Loin activities, so why not stop by and say hello. At the district zone meeting last week local clubs commented favourably on the coverage of Lions club activities given by this newspaper.

Cups and saucers on show

MEMBERS of the Warrnambool Floral Art Group have shown great artistic talent with their displays of spring flowers. The flowers were placed in cups and saucers and made for lovely table pieces. A reminder to all members that the next meeting will be held on Monday, December 4 at 7.30pm at Lady Help of Christians. For more information about the group (which meets on the first Monday of the month) phone 0419 671 080.

After winning the toss against Port Fairy on Saturday and electing to bat first, the Tigers’ openers, Matthew Sinnott and Theo Operman, were both dismissed for ducks before Josh Stapleton was able to add 11 to the scoreboard. Stapleton and lower order batsman Joe Kenna (not out on 11) were the only two to reach double figures in what was a low-scoring affair. The Tigers were held to just 10/48 from 28.2 overs. Best of the bowlers for Port Fairy were James Van De Peer who took 4/16 from nine and Henry Bensch 3/14. In reply, Port Fairy surpassed the total in just over 10 overs with openers Van De Peer (20) and Alastair Templeton (29) both unbeaten for the day. The win sees Port Fairy currently holding second spot on the Warrnambool District ladder, just behind leaders Russells Creek. In other round seven matches, Mortlake accounted for Wesley Yambuk, West Warrnambool went down to Allansford Panmure, Dennington were victors over Nestles, the Northern Raiders held on for a win over Russells Creek and the Eels defeated Brierly-Christ Church. Round eight matches tomorrow will see West host the Titans, Mortlake home to Dennington, the Raiders will host Allansford Panmure, Nestles will face Merrivale, Russells Creek and Briely Christ Church will battle at Jetty Flat and Port Fairy will face the Eels.

Perfect score

DAVID Altmann achieved every 10-pin bowler’s dream recent with a perfect score of 300. Altmann scored the perfect card in the Moonshiners League at Warrnambool’s Great Ocean Road Tenpin Bowl late last week. David’s scores over three games of the league were an incredible 300, 213 and 196.

The Camperdown Turf Club is looking to repeat the success of last January’s Cup with another top day planned for 2024. Club president Anthony Finn said on the back of being selected as a finalist in the 2023 Country Cup of The Year for the 2023 meeting, the volunteer committee was keen to ensure that 2024 was another great day for the local community and all who attend the races. “We have set about ensuring that we continue to provide an event that is attractive for people to attend and part of that for 2024 is securing Joel Selwood and some of his football colleagues from Geelong,” Finn said. “Joel and his colleagues will play an integral part in hosting duties and the punters club and will mix with patrons in the Mounting Yard Marquee on Cup Day.” Finn said the club was thrilled to secure someone with the reputation of Selwood, especially given he and his colleagues are keen on racing. Tickets have gone on sale for the Mounting Yard Marquee and can be purchased at www.countryracing/camperdown or by contacting the club directly on 0400 557 625. Finn said he expected the marquee to be a sellout on the back of having 300 tickets sold for this year’s event. He encouraged patrons to get in early and secure a spot. “The committee has been working tirelessly for some months now preparing the venue so that it is in top condition on raceday,” Finn said. “As well as the Mounting Yard Marquee, the other usual packages will be on sale including the rails umbrella packages, catering and beverage packages and a large range of kids activities.” The kids’ activities will include Kelly Sports, free backpacks, jumping castles, face painting and the ever-popular live music on the front lawn. Finn said he was confident the event would again be well supported by locals and others who make the trek to the track on Saturday January 20.

SEASONED campaigner Jamie Veal took line honours for the first time this season at Premier Speedway last Saturday night. Round four of the Victorian Sprintcar Racing Association series proved a fruitful one for Veal who enjoyed a clean sweep on his way to the chequered flag, winning his heat, the shootout and topping the leaderboard in quick time. Veal won the 30-lap A Main final, finishing ahead of Brock Hallett with Chad Ely in third. In stark contrast to Veal, who enjoyed a clean night, Hallett’s trip to the podium wasn’t without hurdles after missing the shootout with a fuel leak. Simpson driver Tim Rankin snared his second victory in the Jack Willsher Cup for Formula 500s and was followed by Liam Russell and Dale Sinclair. The Junior Formula 500s also put on a great show, with Rusty Ponting winning the 12-lap final from Warrnambool’s Koby O’Shannassy and Cobden’s Hugo Chivell. Action will return to Premier Speedway for Max’s Race on December 16. Late Models and Junior Formula 500s will be the support classes. Gates will open at 3.30pm with cars on the track from 5pm.
