Folkie line-up grows

ORGANISERS of the 48th annual Port Fairy Folk Festival have this week announced another 17 artists will join the line-up.

The festival, to be held over the March long weekend next year, once again looks set to draw huge crowds to the seaside town.

Music lovers are encouraged to snap up tickets for the four-day event which honours seaside and song culture.

For almost 50 years the magical award-winning Port Fairy seaside village has become a destination for travellers – and an annual pilgrimage for fans looking to combine the sun and surf of Port Fairy with their favourite (or soon to be discovered) artist.

Recently joining the 2025 line-up are American artists Bonny Light Horseman, Cat Power (who will sing the songs of Bob Dylan) and Island-based English folk singer Lucy Farrell.

Continuing the festival’s tradition of celebrating local artists and supporting musicians from across the country, the March long weekend will also see the likes of Briscoe Sisters, Charm of Finches, Checkerboard Lounge and David Arden take to the Port Fairy stages.

They will be joined by Flynn Gurry, Don Walker, Hat Fitz and Cara, Jad Pinnone, Jeff Lang, Jordie Lane, La Mauvaise Reputation and Nick Charles.

The Folkie is also renowned for its incredible special events.

In 2025 Brian Nankervis will return with his popular ‘On the Couch’ series and crowd favourites, the Find Your Voice Collective will return to sing the songs of Joe Cocker.

Justin Rudge, program director for the Folkie, highlighted the event’s strength and longevity as a major drawcard for audiences.

“We have audience members who’ve been coming to the Folkie since 1977,” he said.

“They brought their kids, and now those children have grown up and are bringing their own kids along.

“The festival has a wide-spanning, multi-generational audience and the 2025 program really celebrates this.”

From contemporary folk artists to the traditional masters, emerging voices to global touring legends, next year’s festival will have something for all ages.

Christmas appeal underway

SOUTH West Healthcare has launched its Christmas appeal.

The health service is hoping local residents will dig deep and give what they can, with all proceeds from the sale of raffle tickets going towards the purchase of a much-needed assisted CPR machine.

“We need to raise around $34,000 for this machine, which will be used right across the hospital and also, if needed, at the cancer centre across the road,” South West Healthcare’s community partnerships manager Suzan Morey said.

“So far we already have almost $18,000 thanks to a recent (and very generous) donation of $16,000 from the Woolsthorpe Auxiliary.

“This piece of medical equipment will help save the lives of sudden cardiac arrest patients.”

The prize in the Christmas raffle is two electric ride-on jeeps, which will no doubt bring plenty of fun and excitement to the lucky winner – just in time for Christmas.

There are just 1,380 tickets available in the draw, which will be announced on December 18.

For tickets and more information head to https://app.galabid.com/ southwesthealthcare or scan the QR code at the display in the foyer of the Warrnambool hospital.

New mayor and deputy elected

COUNCILLOR Karen Foster has been re-elected as Mayor of Moyne Shire Council following a vote at last Tuesday’s council meeting.

Cr Foster will serve for the second time as mayor.

Deputy mayor Cr Jordan Lockett will join Cr Foster in leading council for the next 12 months.

Cr Foster thanked her fellow councillors and said she was honoured

to be nominated for the role again.

“I am grateful to receive the support of my fellow councillors and look forward to serving the community again in this capacity,” Cr Foster said.

“We can build on the good work of the previous council and intend to create a culture of collaboration and respect to advance the interests of Moyne Shire.

“Moyne Shire has a significant agenda and we will be focusing our Spring Street and Canberra advocacy to gain support for our projects and attention

for the issues that matter most to our community.”

She said those issues included the condition of state-controlled roads, critical funding for community infrastructure and improving availability of community services including early years.

“Council has a range of significant opportunities and challenges ahead,

including improving our roads, maintaining high levels of services standards, supporting community events and maintenance and upgrades to facilities,” Cr Foster said.

Tuesday’s meeting was the first of the new council term, with newly elected councillors Myra Murrihy, Lisa Ryan, Lloyd Ross and Susan Taylor welcomed to the chamber.

Mayor Ben Blain is looking forward to another year at the helm of Warrnambool City Council. 2024D

Mayor re-elected

COUNCILLOR Ben Blain has been re-elected mayor of Warrnambool City Council for a second term.

Speaking with the Warrnambool Weekly earlier this week, Cr Blain said he was absolutely thrilled to be re-appointed to the role and thanked his fellow councillors for the opportunity.

“Being mayor of Warrnambool City Council is certainly a great honour and it’s something I’m very proud of,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to again working with my fellow councillors and the community to continue to make our city a great place to visit, live, work and play.

“This month we welcomed Bill Edis, Willy Benter and Matt Walsh to the council table and they join re-elected councillors Vicki Jellie (deputy mayor), Debbie Arnott, Richard Ziegeler and myself.

“I believe we have a great team that will represent the residents and community groups and work cohesively towards some great outcomes.”

His first term as city mayor was both extremely busy and rewarding for Cr Blain, with many memorable moments and achievements.

“The development of the Brierly Precinct would be among the items at the top of the list, and this is an ongoing project but one I’m very excited about,” he said.

“That precinct will not only be a wonderful sporting facility but it will be a great community hub for the benefit of all ages.

“Seeing our city become a refugee welcome zone was also a highlight, as was the formation of plans for the swimming pool and the art gallery.

“But it’s not just the big ticket items that are important, just as important

are the one-percenters; the smaller but just as important items like the footpath development at Woodford Primary School and the Harrington Road upgrade.”

Covering an area of around 121 square kilometres, and with an operating budget of around $100 million, meeting the increasing needs of such a growing municipality as Warrnambool can also pose its challenges.

“We are constantly looking for additional funding, including from both the state and federal governments, to ensure we are continually moving forward.

“We know the next 12 months will be just as challenging as the last but these are exciting times for our city.

“We have a lot of projects that are either now underway or about to take shape. This includes the development of a Childcare Centre of Excellence to help cope with the rising demand for additional staff across our childcare and early childhood centres.

“We are also looking at our local laws to delegate further powers to our local police to help with issues surrounding homelessness in our city.”

Cr Blain said in response to concerns expressed by Warrnambool traders and shoppers, police have “ramped up” patrols in the area, particularly in and around the CBD.

“We will be looking at this issue closely at next week’s council meeting; staff should feel safe to go to work and shoppers should also feel safe to go about their business.”

Outside his mayoral demands, Cr Blain is now preparing for one of his biggest roles to date – that of a father.

“My wife Natalie and I are expecting our first child in a few short weeks so that’s very exciting,” he said.

“The next 12 months are certainly going to be extra busy.”

Road resealing program underway

SOME of Warrnambool’s busiest streets will have their lifespans extended with council’s annual road resealing program now underway.

Resealing works commenced this week, with several roads listed on the program.

This includes sections of Wangoom Road, Balmoral Road, Tulsa Close, Moore Street, Morriss Road, Hider Street, Hopetoun Road, Murray Street and Kerr Street.

Also set to receive attention are sections of Fitzroy Road, Simpson Street, Gladstone Street, Harris Street, Hopkins Pt Road and Ward Street.

Road resealing involves a bitumen spray being applied to the road surface before a layer of aggregate is rolled on top.

This creates a new waterproof layer and prevents water from seeping into the road, eroding its foundations and eventually causing the surface to break up and potholes to form.

Warrnambool City Council chief executive officer Andrew Mason said that resealing was an important part of road maintenance.

“Roads are at the core of local government. We know how important they are and that’s why we invest in the maintenance of our local streets,” he said.

“Quite a few of our busiest local roads have been identified for

maintenance this year.

“Some of them see 6,000 or 7,000 vehicles a day, and that can take a toll.

“As with most things, if you look after your roads, they will last longer. Road resealing allows us to get the maximum lifespan out of our roads, saving money in the long run.”

Mr Mason also said it was important to remember that roads like the Princes Highway, Mortlake Road, Caramut Road and Bridge Road aren’t managed by council.

These are state government roads.

Warrnambool City Council has once again partnered with Corangamite Shire Council on a joint tender process, where one contractor was appointed to carry out the resealing work in both municipalities.

“The joint process has been a real win for both councils over the years,” Mr Mason said.

“Resealing work requires specialised contractors and equipment, and by combining our resealing programs, we can achieve some economies of scale and get a better overall price.”

Motorists can expect some delays while resealing is carried out.

“Resealing is a fairly quick process, with delays on each road contained within a single day,” Mr Mason said.

“There will be brief periods, about 20 minutes or so, where roads will be fully closed and traffic will be diverted.

“Residents living on a section of street that will be resealed will have received a letter in the mail.

“Thank you to everyone in advance for your patience as this essential maintenance work is carried out. One day of inconvenience will lead to a better road surface for years to come.”

Contractors will work on one road at a time, starting from last Monday, November 25.

permitting, it is expected the works will be complete by tomorrow, Saturday, November 30. For more details on the sections of each street to be resealed, visit www.warrnambool.vic.gov.au.

The sky’s the limit

WARRNAMBOOL’S Air Force

Cadets took to the skies last Saturday.

Members of the 413 Squadron last weekend hosted an exciting day at the Warrnambool airport, giving local youth the chance to experience the thrill of flight.

The event featured two exceptional aviation experiences – the Personal Aviation Experience (PEX) and Cadet Aviation Experience (CAE) flights.

PEX provides cadets with one-on-one flights alongside qualified instructors, allowing them to gain hands-on flying experience in the Australian Air Force Cadets’ Diamond DA40NG aircraft.

CAE also offered new recruits the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of flight and aviation, with some cadets enjoying their first ever flight.

“The event was made possible through the support of the Elementary Flying Training School based at RAAF Point Cook,” Flying Officer with the cadets, Jane McDonald said.

“We’re also very grateful to the dedicated volunteers from Australian Air Force Cadets who contributed their time and expertise to help make this day happen.

“This activity extended the cadets’ knowledge of aviation and fostered both their skills and enthusiasm for flying.”

The event also provided an opportunity to inspire the next generation of aviators by giving them the chance to learn from experienced instructors.

Cooper Energy plan to conduct gas exploration drilling near our existing subsea infrastructure and within our offshore Otway Basin licence areas offshore from Peterborough, Victoria. We expect our exploration drilling will confirm additional volumes of gas. If so, we will work through the required approvals, licences and activities to produce the gas via our existing subsea infrastructure. The Otway Basin has been producing gas for decades - we are planning to provide gas supply exclusively to the domestic market to help alleviate the forecast shortages For more information about our project see our consultation website via the QR code.

Concerns over footpath delay

MEMER for South West Coast

Roma Britnell has this week called on the government to create a framework to manage cultural heritage assessments

“in a timely manner.”

In a statement issued earlier this week, Ms Britnell claimed that delays in a cultural heritage assessment was holding up the construction of a footpath along the foreshore on Ocean Drive in Port Fairy.

“The Moyne Shire Council was in the process of improving the footpath when some items of indigenous cultural heritage were discovered,” Ms Britnell said.

“Since September, the project has stalled while these items are being assessed. Meanwhile the pavement is incomplete, causing obstructions, which is particularly difficult for families with prams and strollers and those with mobility aids such as wheelchairs.

“The fenced off area looks unsightly and disappointing for visitors and locals alike but allows limited access to the beach.”

Ms Britnell added that she had been told there was only one week of works remaining on the pavement to finish the job, but that the assessment may take months.

“Locals are left in the dark about the timeline for resumption,” she said.

“Now with the approaching summer season when visitors swell the population, this issue is causing disharmony and concern in Port Fairy.

“Of course, we want items of cultural heritage recognised and preserved, but assessments must be conducted in a timely manner.”

She said it was the government’s responsibility to make sure the process was balanced and timely.

“This delay is causing frustration on all sides,” she said.

“It has exacerbated feelings of resentment and confusion. It undermines reconciliation and respect and unfortunately the Indigenous community is caught in the crossfire, appearing to be the reason for these hold-ups.”

She believed there was no government framework in place to ensure transparency and accountability in the assessment of cultural heritage.

“We all need these assessments to be conducted in a timely manner with fairness and equity,” she said.

“The Port Fairy community raised its concerns with me and in parliament I requested the Minister to explain the rationale but have had no response - so this sitting week, I’ve raised the issue again.

“We blame the Allan Labor government, not the local indigenous peoples. The community needs transparency and accountability.”

SOUTH West Healthcare (SWH) has this week received a $5,000 donation thanks to the generosity of a group of local dancers.

Members of the Warrnambool and District Dance Club officially handed over their donation to SWH community partnerships manager Suzan Morey on Wednesday afternoon.

“The money was raised by members, both current and former, who have attended our weekly dances at the Christ Church Hall over the years,” club president Doug Byron said.

“Last year we donated $1000 to the hospital and this year we decided to donate a large portion of the funds we have been raising since our formation back in 1976 to the hospital.

“It’s a marvellous local facility that so many people benefit from. We spoke with several of our former members and we all agreed that the hospital would be the ideal recipient of our donation.

“After all, at some stage or another we all utilise the hospital and to have this money go towards an important piece of equipment is wonderful.”

Accepting the donation on behalf of SWH, Ms Morey said the money would go towards the current appeal for an assisted CPR

machine.

“This equipment will be used by our team, not only for patients who suffer a cardiac arrest but also for visitors and staff who also find themselves in need,” she said.

Dancers donate $5000 to hospital

“We are extremely appreciative of the dance club members for their support and to receive such a sizeable donation is just incredible. It is an extremely generous donation and one that is very much appreciated.”

Members of the Warrnambool and District Dance Club were happy to donate $5000 to South West Healthcare this week. 2024D

Rodeo next weekend

THE 2024 Warrnambool Rodeo is set to entertain crowds next weekend.

The rodeo, to be held next Saturday, December 7 at the Warrnambool Showgrounds, promises to again be a great family-friendly event.

Break out your chaps and saddle up for an evening of non-stop entertainment.

The ring will come alive from 5.30pm with junior and senior events in bull riding, saddle bronc, bareback and barrell races.

The Memorial Open Bull Ride, named in honour of local cowboy Sam Daly, will no doubt be one of many highlights of the night.

There will also be plenty of crowd giveaways, along with your chance to win back the cost of your admission ticket.

Young visitors will be well catered for with plenty of free kids activities along with jumping castles and the opportunity to enter the ‘Little Miss Cowgirl’ and ‘Master Cowboy’ competitions.

Entry to these competitions (for children eight years and under) is by gold coin donation on the night.

Food stalls, trade stands and the ever-popular Colour Angel (offering face painting and tatoos) will all add to the atmosphere of the event.

Popular local musician Michael Ferguson and his band will provide live music after the main event.

Gates will open at 4pm, with food and entertainment from 4.30pm.

On-site parking will be available for just $5 per vehicle, while camping is also permitted for just $10 per person.

This event is strictly no BYO alcohol or glass and patrons are encouraged to take along a chair or blanket.

VIP tickets will include express entry with priority parking close to the rodeo arena – and a quick exit at the end of the night.

These tickets also include access to the prime viewing and seating areas beside the arena, finger food served all night and private bar.

THE Lions Club of Warrnambool is hoping visitors to Gateway Plaza will help spread some Christmas cheer this season.

As has become tradition, the Lions organisation is once again selling Christmas cakes and puddings in the lead-up to Christmas Day as one of their major fundraisers.

A stall has been set up inside Warrnambool’s Gateway Plaza in the hope that visitors will purchase a cake or pudding, or make a donation that will help others in need.

This year has also seen the addition of the Hearing Dogs jute shopping bags along with a giant raffle – with the chance to win two great prizes (the first being a giant hamper filled with loads of goodies for the entire family).

“The money raised from our Christmas raffle along with the sale of cakes, puddings and shopping bags allows us to continue our projects within the local community,” Lions Club of Warrnambool member Raine McMillan said.

“We thoroughly enjoy volunteering and giving back to our community; it’s all about helping others less fortunate and giving support to those in need so what better time to do that than at Christmas?

“The Lions cakes and puddings have become staples in many homes across the district so we encourage everyone to pop in to the Plaza in the lead up to Christmas and make a purchase if they can.”

Christmas... a time for giving

Lions club spreads Christmas cheer

AS the festive season fast approaches, our thoughts turn to spending time with friends and loved ones, gifts under the tree, hearty meals and colourful decorations.

But for many across our district, Christmas can also be a challenging time, filled with sadness and anxiety.

Increasing living costs often sees families struggling to make ends meet.

Now is also the perfect time for giving - whether that be in the form of a gift for a child who would otherwise go without, food for a hamper or a monetary donation towards a local charity.

In the lead up to Christmas, the Warrnambool Weekly will be looking at ways we can all help make the festive season that little bit brighter for those less fortunate.

Together, our small contributions can make a big difference to the lives of others this festive season.

Applications open for scholarship program

ONE of the largest and longest-running private scholarship programs in the country will open for applications from next Monday, December 2.

For nearly two decades, Bendigo Bank’s scholarship program has empowered thousands of students across the nation by providing financial support, mentorship, and access to life changing educational opportunities.

Since its inception in 2006, the program has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships, transforming the lives of students by supporting their academic, professional, and personal growth.

Bendigo Bank chair Vicki Carter said the board was pleased to continue supporting such an important initiative as it heads into its 18th year.

“We are incredibly proud to support the program and continue this tradition,” Ms Carter said.

“Since 2006 this program has provided more than $13.3 million in funding to more than 1900 students from across Australia, helping to address the employment and skills challenges faced by young people, particularly in regional and remote areas.

“The range of scholarships on offer through the program will help students realise their full potential while supporting the

next generation of leaders for our community.”

Eighteen year-old proud Yorta Yorta Dja Dja Wurrung woman, Ailish Clements, was one of the 386 students who received one of the bank’s scholarships this year.

Currently studying at LaTrobe University in Bendigo, Ailish said she faced many challenges while completing her VCE.

“I had to move out and get my own place and that was a really big challenge for me to overcome and go through,” she said.

“I also fell pregnant in 2023 and had to complete my exams and VCE and graduate eight months pregnant.

“It was hard, but it was really worth it. I look back and I’m so glad that I completed everything. It’s made me grow so much as an individual and this scholarship has even helped me to be able to continue my studies.”

Ms Clements said without the scholarship she may not have been able to achieve what she has to date.

“To the local indigenous youth, I would tell them despite all the challenges, the achievements, and the end goal and what you get out of it, what you learn out of it overpowers all the struggle you went through.”

For more information and to apply simply head to the scholarships page on the Bendigo Bank website.

Scholarship recipient Ailish Clements encourages anyone studying in 2025 to consider applying. 2024E

A town with a lot of heart

PORT Fairy is now better equipped for summer thanks to a community-driven effort that has resulted in seven new, publicly accessible automated external defibrillators (AEDs).

The life-saving devices were funded by the Port Fairy Folk Festival and local residents.

Placed on residents’ fences and at the end of driveways, the devices are available 24 hours a day.

They have also been registered with Ambulance Victoria (AV), allowing triple zero call takers to direct people to them in an emergency.

Local AV advanced life support (ALS) paramedic Maddie Farley said the devices will make a real difference in the community.

“AEDs are used to attempt to shock the heart back into rhythm following a cardiac arrest,” Ms Farley said.

“Minutes matter in cardiac arrest and when a patient receives CPR and a

shock from an AED before paramedics arrive, their chance of survival more than doubles.

“Port Fairy receives a large influx of visitors during the summer months so it’s great these devices have arrived just in time.”

Some of the new AEDs can be found at Awabi Court, Anna Catherine Drive, Bowker Court and Whales Drive.

Cardiac arrest happens when a person’s heart suddenly stops beating and it can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere.

About 21 Victorians suffer a cardiac arrest every day and only one in 10 survive.

While it’s great to receive AED training, Ms Farley said it’s not necessary as anyone can use an AED and start CPR.

“If someone is in cardiac arrest and an AED is available, simply open it and follow the instructions,” she said.

“They are safe and easy to use and will not deliver a shock unless it is necessary.”

Ms Farley also encouraged people to sign up to the GoodSAM app, which connects Victorians in cardiac arrest with members of the community who are willing to start CPR in the critical minutes before paramedics arrive.

“Anyone who knows hands-only CPR can save a life by becoming a GoodSAM responder today,” she said.

“You don’t have to be first-aid qualified or have a medical background, you just need to be willing and able to do handsonly CPR, be over 18 years of age and have access to have a smartphone.”

Nearly 50 community members recently attended a Call, Push, Shock

session at the local CFA branch to learn how to help someone in cardiac arrest. Ms Farley said the session also encouraged local clubs and businesses with existing AEDs to get them registered and moved outside to be accessible 24/7.

The new AEDs would not have been possible without organiser Neil Povey and the Port Fairy CFA brigade captain, Hugh Worrall.

Other AEDs can be found at the Port Fairy Senior Citizens Centre, Big 4 Holiday Park, St Patrick’s Parish Primary School, Port Fairy Consolidated School, the Port Fairy Library, Port Fairy Community House and more.

Students from Port Fairy Consolidated School are looking forward to next week’s Carols by the Bluestone. 2024E

It’s all

happening in Liebig St

MARKET stalls will line Liebig Street from 3.30pm today (Friday) as part of a host of activities to launch the Christmas season in Warrnambool.

The markets will run from 3.30pm until 7.30pm, with many retailers also open late.

For the kids, there will be a balloon artist, a sparkle station, face painting and roving entertainment.

Anyone who spends $30 at a Warrnambool CBD business today can also spin a wheel for the chance to win a prize (some exclusions and T&Cs apply).

The Warrnambool & District Community Hospice Gift Wrapping Station will also be set up.

Live music will be provided by Michael Honan, Mick Hughes, Amelia Jordyn, Esther Tanner and the Warrnambool Ukulele Group.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain invited everyone to join the festivities.

“We’re officially launching Christmas in Warrnambool on November 29,” he said.

“Come and soak up the festive atmosphere and tick some items off your Christmas shopping list.

“Over the past few years, Black Friday has joined Boxing Day as one of the biggest days for shopping so we’re building on this to create a fun evening with lots to see and do in the Warrnambool City Centre.”

Carols by the Bluestone

FOLLOWING on from the success of last year’s inaugural event, Port Fairy Consolidated School will again host a ‘Carols by the Bluestone’ next week.

To be held at the school next Friday, December 6, this year’s event will once again feature carols sung by school students,

along with local artists, the Port Fairy Consolidated School choir and a special guest appearance from local musician Michael Ferguson.

Food and drink vendors will be on-site throughout the night and the carols will run from 5.30pm until 7pm.

Simply gather up your family and friends, pack a picnic rug and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Cr Blain said that this was the first of a series of activities in the CBD organised by council in the lead up to Christmas.

“On Saturday the Flying Flamingos aerial acrobats will perform on the Civic Green, and they will also be hosting interactive workshops. There’s also more live music and face painting.

“Then on other weekends before Christmas there will be poi twirling, visits from Santa, a fairy show on the Civic Green and lots more.

“Plus the Christmas projections on CBD buildings will be back with some new animations I’m sure everyone will love.”

Full details on today’s markets, as well as other activities, can be found at whatson.warrnambool. vic.gov.au.

Christmas screening to raise funds for those in need

COMMUNITY support organisa-tion

Meli is bringing a magical Christmas film to the big screen to raise money for local families in need of a helping hand this festive season.

Tickets are now on sale for a special screening of ‘A Boy Called Christmas’ at Warrnambool’s Capitol Cinema on Saturday, December 7.

All proceeds from the event will be converted into e-gift cards and distributed to those receiving Meli’s services in the south-west as part of Meli’s annual Giving Tree Appeal.

Meli chief executive officer Grant Boyd encouraged the local community to get behind this wonderful event, highlighting that the need to support clients at this time of year had never been greater.

“As the cost-of-living crisis deepens, we’re seeing more families than ever before seek assistance and many for the first time,” Mr Boyd said.

“The movie screening is a wonderful way to entertain the family while also brightening Christmas for those in the community who need it most.”

Starring the highly acclaimed late Maggie Smith, ‘A Boy Called Christmas’ sees a young boy named Nikolas set out on an extraordinary adventure to discover the fabled village of the elves, ‘Elfhelm’.

Taking with him a headstrong reindeer called Blitzen and a loyal pet mouse, Nikolas soon meets his destiny in this magical, comic, and endearing story that proves nothing is impossible.

Attendees are encouraged to wear their festive best, whether that’s a special costume, touch of tinsel or Christmas hat.

Movie snacks will be included as part of the ticket price and spot prizes will be awarded throughout the event.

Meli’s screening of ‘A Boy Called Christmas’ will take place at 3pm on Saturday, December 7 at Warrnambool’s Capitol Cinema.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children and can be purchased at https://events. humanitix.com/meli-presents-a-boy-calledchristmas.

The Giving Tree Appeal is now in its 23rd year and last year brought Christmas joy in the form of e-gift cards to more than 3,600 families and individuals.

For your chance to WIN one of two double passes to see ‘A Boy Called Christmas’ on December 7, simply colour this in and text your entry with your name and contact number to 0427 992 784. Entries close Sunday, December 1. Winners notified

The quality overall was good over most categories with plenty of weight and condition in the bullocks with the trade weights maintaining the quality of the previous week.

There was a tail in the trade due to the increase in numbers on offer. The largest percentage were beef cows displaying excellent weight and condition.

Not all the regular processors were present but most feeder and store buyers operated in a yarding that comprised 600 bullocks along with 1164 trade weight, 1260 cows and 86 grown bulls.

The market remained firm for the lead bullocks with the secondary types softer by

Trade steers lost 10 to 15c/kg and the heifers were softer by 15 to 20c/kg and more so for the dairy types. Bulls slipped 20 to 30c/kg.

The vealers on offer made to 340c/kg with bullocks making 360c/kg.

Manufacturing cattle sold to 290c with the crossbred steers topped at 320c and grown heifers made between 270 and 310c/kg. Trade steers made to 330c and trade heifers (grain assisted) to 340c/kg. Bulls topped at 345c/kg.

The cow market today lost 10 to 20c/kg and more over the lighter weights. Heavy beef cows were selling between 275 and 290c/ kg with the medium weights 210 to 270c/ kg.

Dairy cows were making from 130c for the lighter cows and up to 280c/kg for the heavy weights.

Strong round for Warrnambool Moyne

ROUND two of the KFC Festival of Cricket senior men’s competition proved a successful one for Warrnambool Moyne.

Warrnambool Moyne won the toss and sent South West in to bat at Reid Oval last Sunday – a decision that paid dividends. A strong Warrnambool Moyne bowling line up saw the side restrict South West to just 10/85 in the 21st over.

South West opener Jamie Dewell (25) and middle order batsman Lachlan Green (35) were the only two to reach double figures, while team-mates Charlie Lucas (9), Henry Stevens (4) and Max Moor (2) were the only other run contributors.

Craig Britten had a great day with the ball, topping the wicket takers with a commanding 6/25 off seven overs while team-mate Sanjaya Chathuranga Illeperuma Arachchige was also handy, taking 3/18 off four overs.

Matt Petherick finished the day with bowling figures of 1/22 from four overs.

In reply, Warrnambool Moyne reached 6/86 after 16 overs.

Farooq Quereshi top scored with 35 runs from 34 deliveries while opener Edward Taylor contributed 23.

Round three, to be played on Sunday, December 15, will see Warrnambool Moyne take on Mount Gambier at Frew Park.

Work underway at stadium

WORK is this week underway on new flooring at Warrnambool’s Val Bertrand Stadium.

It is anticipated the flooring upgrade will result in a high quality, more consistent playing surface.

The existing surface had been in place for 35 years and had reached the end of its useable life.

The project, which has a $731,500 budget, is expected to be finished by the end of February, 2025.

Val Bertrand Stadium regularly hosts netball, volleyball, bowls, basketball and pickleball, and is part of the Warrnambool ARC Stadium complex.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the upgrade would create a better playing surface while making ongoing maintenance easier.

“The Val Bertrand Stadium is a very much loved and well-used facility in Warrnambool, and the time has come to rebuild the floor to allow the courts to be enjoyed for many years to come,” he said.

“The five-court facility attracts over 141,000 visits per year.

“The floor itself pre-dates the other basketball courts of the Warrnambool Stadium by over a decade so while we’ve gotten good usage out of it, things have moved on and repair and maintenance options of the floor became limited.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of February. 2024E

when most of the sporting associations have their break and usage is at its lowest,” Cr Blain said.

Cr Blain said that the timing of the works was a key consideration.

“It was really important to be able to schedule this project over summer

“The new flooring will include underfloor rubber pads, which in combination with the new timber floor will create a sprung playing surface which meets contemporary expectations for indoor stadium playing standards.”

New players join indoor bowls

LAST Monday night saw two new players join the indoor bowls competition in Warrnambool.

The competition welcomed Keryn Wilson from Grangeburn and Jason Mungean (who has joined the rest of the Mungean family who play over the top two divisions).

Keryn competed for Cooramook Sinners, along with Lorraine O’Keefe (s), Steve Walther and John Walther.

She started her season with a drawn game against Wannon Park Pups who were skipped by Gary Horner, with Peter Street, Brian Justin and Frank Lenehan.

Jason played third to his nephew Noah (s), along with Sjan Berry and Joyce Roberts.

They were unable to overcome the might of the Koroit Hornets who were skipped by Debbie Keane, with Thelma Johnstone, Vivian O’Grady and Ben Gardiner.

The Hornets went on to win 1815.

Division one saw a draw between Wannon Park Racers; with Scratcher Neal (s), Ian Lake, Lyn Fish and Don McLeod, and the Dennington High 5’s team of Les Lenehan (s), Frank Harney, Helen Harney and Yvonne Lenehan.

This was the Racers second draw in two weeks after drawing with the Wannon Park Dogs last Monday.

Heytesbury Honeys remains on top of the division one ladder after its win over third-placed Allansford Cougars.

The Allansford Cats has held onto second place with a win over the Wannon Park Dogs this week.

In division two it was a battle between first and second on the ladder when Port Fairy Seagulls re-claimed top spot with a win over the Wannon Park Barkers (who have now dropped to second).

Division three has Dennington

Demons clear in top spot after a win over Cooramook Saints 25-16, and despite a loss of 11 shots to the Allansford Pumas, Dennington Devils still hold on to second place.

In all three divisions only a couple of wins separates first from fifth place, so it will be an interesting next two weeks before the start of the Christmas break.

Les and Frank keep a close eye on the bowls.

The project also includes the installation of new vinyl flooring in the grandstand, viewing areas, as well as the foyers of both the Val Bertrand Stadium and the Warrnambool ARC Stadium.

“We have the Seaside Volleyball tournament on over the 2025 Labour Day long weekend, so that will be the first big event for the new courts, and we will also host the Australian Indoor Bias Bowls national championships in August.”
