Top rating for Merri kinder

MERRI Kindergarten in Purnim West is the latest Moyne kindergarten to earn the highest ranking under the National Quality Framework.

The kindergarten was rated as exceeding National Quality Standard (NQS) which is given to services which go above and beyond the requirements in at least four of the seven quality areas measured. Mayor Cr Ian Smith said it was a well-deserved result that demonstrated the effort and commitment of the educators. “It’s been clearly shown that starting education with a solid foundation is central in achieving positive educational outcomes, and that’s what is being provided at Merri,” Cr Smith said. “We congratulate the team for its high-quality education of the youngest members of our Moyne community, giving them a head start on their educational journey.”

The assessment noted the kindergarten environment was welcoming, where children demonstrated a strong sense of belonging and ownership. The purposeful design of the indoor and outdoor environments provided children with multiple opportunities to engage in busy, social and robust play. The assessment also noted the kindergarten’s educators provided children with opportunities to determine and identify risks and take precautions to ensure individual safety. The exceeding NQS result is the latest achieved for Moyne kindergartens, with Merri kindergarten joining Mortlake, Koroit and Macarthur which have each received the same rating.

Wunta moves to racecourse

WARRNAMBOOL’S popular, family-friendly Wunta Fiesta will return to the town in 2024.

The three-day event, which encompasses wine, food and music, will next year be held at the Warrnambool Racecourse on February 16, 17 and 18. According to president of the organising committee, Daryl Hose, the decision to move the event to the racecourse was reflective of rising costs and various other “hurdles” which made holding it in the main street near-impossible. “There were many obstacles we were facing when looking at having Wunta

down the street and in the Civic Green or gardens,” Mr Hose said. “We are a volunteer committee and this event has been running for more than three decades; we wanted to do everything we could to ensure it continues. “Wunta is all about community, and offering families an entertaining, low-cost event that features local musicians, local foodies.” The racecourse proved the “ideal fit” for Wunta according to the committee, which has now grown in numbers since a meeting earlier this week. “We had a call out for volunteers and we now have about 21 active members, with

about 14 on the committee which is just amazing,” Mr Hose said. “We’re now working hard to ensure the three day event next year has something for everyone.” It is anticipated the Friday evening will kick start celebrations with food, wine and music. Saturday will feature jazz performers and a special kids’ area offering free activities – including building things from recyclable materials and, hopefully, free rides. Music will continue throughout Sunday, with markets and a show and shine also to feature on the program of events. “We’re hoping to have a big name play

Behind the bale... City’s youngest mayor AT 34 years old, Warrnambool’s newest mayor Ben Blain is also believed to be one of the youngest in the city’s history.

Juggling a Mortlake-based business with his recently acquired mayoral duties has become a daily challenge for this enthusiastic leader but one he is relishing. Taking on the top job was originally never in his plans. Ben Blain was elected to Warrnambool City Council in 2020, determined to make a difference to the lives of not only those living in the municipality, but to its many thousands of visitors. One of his great inspirations in his life to date, his grandfather Bill, devoted a large part of his life to working for the city council and South West Water and is also one of Ben’s greatest fans. “My grandfather, who sadly recently passed away, lived independently in his Warrnambool home and was just amazing; he inspired me every single day and always will,” Cr Blain said. “He and my grandmother (who sadly passed away a few years back) lived in Warrnambool for more than 50 years; and it has also been home to my wife Natalie and I for the last five. “Alongside Natalie, my grandfather was there when I was officially sworn is as Mayor and I’m told there were a few quiet tears shed; he was pretty proud and that’s special.” While he may be new to the mayoral robes, Cr Blain is by no means new to leadership roles within the community. For four years he held the position of vice-president of the Warrnambool Ratepayers Association and has been a member of various community clubs and organisations in the past. “I’m a big believer in you get back what you put in; it’s a privilege to be able to be a part of the community in an active and positive way and to be in a position to make a difference.” And while he didn’t expect to become mayor, his election to the council’s top job is one that he has embraced with both arms. “Being mayor has given me the chance to meet so many people from a variety of community groups, clubs, organisations and charities that I may otherwise have never had the opportunity,” he said. “Being on council has really opened my eyes even further to just how great this city of ours is. “We have so many exciting projects and plans, both now and for the future, that we will be working on in consultation with the community.”

Ben Blake at work in his Mortlake-based business. Juggling business with mayoral duties has become an “exciting and fulfilling adventure.” 2023D This includes a master plan for Brierley Reserve, the development of the West Warrnambool Neighbourhood House and a funding push for the protection of the rock wall at the breakwater. “The future use and development of the former saleyards site in Warrnambool is also a big issue to be looked at, along with the aquatic strategy. “The outdoor pool is over 60 years old so we really need to decide what to do there and sooner rather than later.” Cr Blain is also concerned about the issue of key worker housing across the City. “We currently have a big issue with housing our workforce;

if we can’t house workers then we can’t grow as a city. Hopefully we can attract a major housing provider to our region.” And with the next council elections scheduled for October next year, this new mayor certainly has his work cut out for him if he is to achieve his goal of “getting as much done as possible before then.” “I’m all about working with the community to see where our priorities lay and to get the jobs done,” he said. “This is a wonderful city to live and work in, and to visit, and it’s so exciting to be able to play even just a small part in its development and progression.”

Kiwanis celebrate 50 years

WHEN it comes to looking out for the needs of disadvantaged local children, the Kiwanis Club has empathy in spades.

Since its inception, this world-wide organisation has continued to do all in its power to raise the necessary funds to help disadvantaged children with an endless range of financial and emotional assistance. The Warrnambool Kiwanis Club will this month celebrate its 50th year and the group could not be prouder. “Kiwanis is a global organisation of volunteers who are dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time,” Warrnambool club member Sandra Mugavin said. “Children are at the heart of each and every member of Kiwanis. Each community has different needs and Kiwanis empowers members to pursue creating ways to serve the needs of children, such as fighting hunger, improving literacy and offering guidance.” Kiwanis clubs across the globe host nearly 150,000 service projects each year. While it may be relatively small in active numbers, and the average age of its membership is “heading up there”, the Warrnambool club remains focussed on doing all it can to help local children and their families. “Our club was one of the earliest to be established in Australia which is something to be proud of,” long-standing member Frank Ryan said. “We’re really just ordinary people doing pretty extraordinary things for children. I’m 92 and I’ve got some great memories of the fundraising events we’ve held over the years.” Supporting local children and their families disadvantaged by trauma, disability and family circumstances has seen the Warrnambool group undertake countless fundraisers. This has included supporting the ‘I Can’ project, distributing collection tins for Peter’s Project, supporting ‘Terrific Kids’ programs in local schools and the annual Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal. In the club’s earlier years, members also collected glass

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Warrnambool are this month celebrating the group’s 50th birthday. 2023D bottles, hosted discos and seniors’ concerts, sold firewood, raised money for a rubber duck at the surf life saving club, purchased a vehicle for St John Ambulance and donated to guides, scouts and various other groups. And they have lost count how many barbecues they have ran at Bunnings. “Who doesn’t like a snag off the barbie, especially when the money is going to the kids?” Frank said. And when not fundraising and helping out at community groups, members enjoy various social functions including dinners, film nights, camping trips and lunches.

“We’re always looking for new members,” Ms Mugavin said. “What community group isn’t these days? It’s certainly harder to get volunteers on board but we’d love to hear from anyone interested.” The Warrnambool Kiwis Club will celebrate its 50th birthday with a special dinner for all past and present members later this month. Anyone interested in attending, or wanting more information on joining the group, can call Diane on 0407 877 737 or Sandra 0407 988 292.

Cr Karen Foster was elected deputy mayor. In accepting the position, Cr Smith thanked his fellow councillors for their support and paid tribute to outgoing mayor Cr Karen Foster. “Cr Foster has done a fantastic job over the past 12 months, and I thank her for the extraordinary efforts she has made for the betterment of Moyne and I’m looking forward to working with her as deputy mayor,” Cr Smith said. “It’s going to be an exciting year. We have a huge program of works to get through including kicking off the Koroit Township Renewal, a new playground and skatepark for Port Fairy, a splashpad and playground in Macarthur and a significant program of road works. “We also have a significant agenda and we’ll be continuing our Spring Street and Canberra advocacy to try and gain support for our projects and attention for the issues that matter most to our community – including the condition of state-controlled roads and critical funding for community infrastructure.”

Spotlight on Port Fairy

HAR R IP & CO. C LOT H I N G P O R T FA I RY

WE LOVINGLY CELEBRATE AUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND FASHION.

Crowds enjoy the show

THERE was plenty to smile about at last weekend’s 168th annual Port Fairy Show, with rides, entertainment and sideshows to suit all ages.

Clear skies greeted the almost 2,000 showgoers who made their way through the gates on Saturday for what organisers say was an “absolutely amazing day.” Wicked Wildlife proved one of the crowd favourites on the day, as did the ‘Rev It Up’ car simulator which attracted 390 users in the six-hour event. Many food stalls sold out on the day, satisfying hungry visitors young and old. While the sideshows, showbags and rides kept many people entertained throughout the day, so too did the Miss Showgirl event which was won by Maya Frost. The Miss Junior Showgirl was won by Lucy Maldon while Paige Malady took home Miss Tiny Tot title and Elijah Potter the Master Tiny Tot.

The show arena proved a great spectacle, with several classes for horses and ponies, and the range of exhibits offered everything from photography and crossstitch through to home baked goods. Some of the winners from the various categories included: Photography - Kathryn Hartley (senior) and Lexie Dwyer (junior). Cookery - Nik Klose (sponge); Jorja Lowe (decorated celebration cake); Lachlan Klose (boys only scones). Intermediate aggregate Jorja Lowe; children’s aggregate Layla Hamilton; open section Alice Hirst. Horticulture - Susan Rowbottom (best Iris and aggregate in cut flowers); Nicole Weston (champion rose of show); Bev Keane (floral art open); Archer Dumensy (floral art children’s section). Needlework - Karen Wright (open); Jess Kelly (intermediate); Lachlan Klose (junior). Handcraft - Heather Templeton (open) and Archie Dumesny (school age).
