Teen heads to world titles

WITH a background in gymnastics and a seemingly natural ability to conquer obstacles, Alexander Cox looks set to compete in this year’s Ultimate Ninja World Series Championship Finals.

The Warrnambool teen will head to Anaheim, California in July to test his skills against some of the world’s best ‘warriors’ in the 2024 UNAA (Ultimate Ninja Athlete Association) World Series.

Having spent years training and competing as a gymnast, the transition to a Ninja athlete was a natural one for the Warrnambool College student.

Alexander has built his own course in the backyard of his family home and also has regular gym sessions to maintain his fitness.

“For years I’d been doing gymnastics before I went to an open play session at Hit Nation in Warrnambool and immediately I was hooked on it,” Alexander said.

“Being a Ninja athlete is challenging and that’s one thing I like about it; it’s fun to try new things and once you conquer an obstacle it’s pretty amazing.

“Some courses have eight obstacles and others have up to 16. For me, the most difficult one is the slack line which is pretty much a long, narrow ratchet strap that you have to run or walk across. That’s tricky.”

No new-comer to the big stage, Alexander last year travelled to Orlando where he competed in the FINA (Federation of International Ninja Athletics) world finals.

He performed extremely well and was placed 16th.

“It was head-to-head racing at Orlando which means you compete in pairs to see who can reach the furthest obstacle.

“That was an amazing experience and I’m hoping to improve on my results when I go to California.”

Walk 4 A Cure this weekend

THE Gillin Boys Foundation’s ‘WALK 4 A Cure’ returns to Warrnambool this weekend.

The annual walk will take place this Sunday, March 3, and organiser Christopher Gillin and his family are hoping to see a large group of participants.

“This will be our third walk and we’re hoping we can raise even more than the $3,000 we did last year,” Christopher said.

“Each year we’ve had more and more support, with roughly 80-100 participants in 2023 so hopefully that continues this time.”

Christopher said his family came up with the idea for the walk to not only raise much needed funds for the foundation and to increase awareness of muscular dystrophy, but to encourage people to get out and active.

“We believe this (the walk) is a great way to get people together, hopefully wearing green, and to show them that while walking is something most people take for granted, it is usually the first major thing a Duchenne patient will lose,” Christopher said.

“So all those who take part on Sunday are walking for those who can’t anymore.”

The casual walk will start at 10am from the Lady Bay Resort car park.

Walkers will make their way along the footpath to the surf club before following the beach track to the Pavilion before returning to the car park via the footpath.

“I absolutely love the walk; it’s a great chance to catch up with our supporters and possibly meet and reach out to new people who may not know what Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is,” Christopher said.

“I hope we can continue to grow bigger each year because the more awareness we spread the more people are educated about this incurable disease –and the more funds we raise the quicker the cure.”

Following the walk, a sausage sizzle and drinks will be available along with a coffee van.

Gillin Boys Foundation Muscular Dystrophy

Awareness Warrnambool merchandise will also be available for purchase and all money raised will go directly towards the Fight For A Cure. Registration is just $15 per person with children under 12 free.

“For those who haven’t pre-registered we will be in the Lady Bay Resort carpark from 9.15am for people to register – and for those who have already registered, they can get their names marked off the list,” Christopher said.

EMMANUEL College is $10,000 closer to its $1.5 million target for a new Edmund Rice Centre thanks to last week’s ‘Rice Rally’.

There was plenty of excitement and action both on and off the basketball court on Friday afternoon when a group of students took on an ‘All Stars’ team – and won.

Played in front of a large crowd, anticipated at more than 1,000, the game offered non-stop action with both sides taking advantage of turnovers and showing great team-work both in and out of the key.

All Stars player Steve Kerr was voted MVP by the crowd.

Emmanuel students Olly Harris (scoring three, three-pointers) and Eve Covey (two, three-pointers) were strong contributors to the scoreboard while Charlie McKinnon

The game was tight for the first three quarters but in the final five minutes the students took off and clenched victory, 39-30.

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere of the day, students and visitors enjoyed a sausage sizzle and various food vans while among the special guests were Rookie, Jonathan Brown and Gorgi Cochlan – who were happy to feature in the live broadcast. Emmanuel College principal Peter Morgan, Brian Brown (chair of the capital campaign committee) and fellow Alumni Dave Hughes were also courtside for all the action.

The private phase of the appeal has already raised around $300,000 and together with Friday’s $10,000 the school is thrilled with the “wonderful start” to the Edmund Rice Centre appeal.

Riding the waves

A GROUP of ocean loving locals can be seen riding the waves in Warrnambool in the early hours of the morning.

Not even Warrnambool’s often cool and windy conditions can deter this group of body boarding enthusiasts – who have fondly named themselves the ‘Sea Tarts.’ Meeting at least three times a week, from 8am Tuesdays and 9am Wednesdays and Thursdays, the group sets out to catch as many waves on their bodyboards as possible – and according to group founder Trish Taylor there’s no better way to start the day.

“A friend and myself decided to go body boarding back in November 2018 so we went down there (to the beach) with a couple of old boards and just hoped for the best,” Trish said.

“Originally I came from an in-land town, miles from the nearest beach, so this was all relatively new to me but I was keen to give it a try.

“We absolutely loved it and have been doing it ever since.

“Our group has steadily grown and we can get anywhere from about half a dozen to more than 10 each session. The average age of our regulars is probably in the mid-

60s; we spend about an hour in the water riding waves; it’s addictive.”

And it’s not just a summer hobby for Trish and her friends, they head down to the beach all-year round.

“The weather may be a little colder in winter but there really isn’t much difference in water temperature – we always have a

bottle of Port in the boot and a quick nip from that (or a hot cuppa) always warms us up.”

Trish’s grandson Alejandro is also a keen member.

Having spent his earlier years riding waves on Trish’s back, he is now one of the first to get out there on his own board during

school holidays.

“I think Alejandro enjoys it as much as we do and when he comes down he’s always one of the first to catch a wave. He’s now eight and we all love having him with us in the water.”

New members are always welcome to join the Sea Tarts in the waves.

Providing a voice for families

WRAD Health CEO Mark

Powell has backed calls by families for a harm reduction approach towards people with addiction rather than a punitive stand.

Speaking on the eve of International Family Drug Support Day (IFDS), held last Saturday, Mr Powell said WRAD Health strongly supported the engagement of families and recognised the important role they play in the care and treatment of anyone struggling with substance disorders.

He backed calls from Family Drug Support (FDS) for more recognition of the voice of families.

Founder and CEO of FDS, Tony Trimingham OAM started the organisation after the death of his son Damien 25 years ago.

Mr Trimingham said it was now abundantly clear that the national drug policy debate was missing a critically important voice –families.

“When a family member is badly impacted by substance use, it can break you. It can break relationships. It can break families,” Mr Trimingham said.

“Broken families weaken communities and are often hard to see, because we’re all very good at hiding the issue.

“It appears everyone has a say on our current drug policies, including politicians, police, religious leaders and media commentators, yet families are too often left out of these discussions, despite being the people, along with the people using drugs, most affected by the current policies.”

Mr Trimingham said that in FDS’s recent ‘Voices to be Heard’ survey of more than 600 family members affected by someone else’s drug and alcohol use, families were unambiguous about their deep dissatisfaction with the status quo regarding drug policy.

“This was especially the case with the zealousness of government to pursue the punitive responses rather than those of compassion,

which are far more effective in reducing harm and exacerbating problems for families,” he said.

In looking at the results of the survey, families overwhelmingly support the following:

Needle and syringe programs (87.5 per cent), pill testing services (85.7 per cent), pharmacotherapy (methadone, buprenorphine etc.) programs (86.3 per cent), medically supervised injecting centres (83.1 per cent), medicinal cannabis (83.9 per cent) and prescription heroin programs (74.8 per cent).

In addition, families wanted to see resources allocated to harm reduction strategies by a factor of almost 7:1 when compared to law enforcement strategies.

The reality being experienced by families from the extraordinarily harmful legal consequences of drug use resulted in families overwhelmingly supporting the legalisation of cannabis and strongly supporting the decriminalisation of all currently illicit drugs.

It was also clear that families

often try tough love approaches (60 per cent) when trying to deal with drug and alcohol issues with family members but find them to be ineffective and problematic.

As a result, families become far more in favour of strategies that encourage connection and coping (86 per cent), with as few as 10 per cent continuing to support tough love approaches.

Mr Powell said the survey showed families support a harm reduction approach.

“They recognise that a punitive approach to people with addiction is unhelpful and doesn’t engage them into treatment, creating even greater risk,” he said.

“This is echoed by people working in the field.”

WRAD Health has been facilitating groups for families for several years and recognises the impact and distress families face and some of the barriers to treatment for them including feelings of anger, guilt, shame and stigma.

“Hopefully days such as IFDS bring a spotlight to

their experiences and further breakdown those barriers,” Mr Powell said.

Heart care close to home

HEART surgery survivor Barb Skilbeck is now volunteering with the local clinic she believes played an integral role in her recovery.

Mrs Skilbeck completed a seven-week rehabilitation program with South West Healthcare’s cardiac rehabilitation clinic and has since become a volunteer.

“When I received that initial phone call from cardiac rehabilitation consultant Ann, I felt like I was home; she was very supportive and welcoming,” Mrs Skilbeck said.

After experiencing breathlessness and an aching jaw, Mrs Skilbeck was referred by her local GP to Geelong where an angiogram discovered a blockage (which a stent alone wouldn’t be enough to correct).

Post surgery she returned to Warrnambool with a referral to South West Healthcare’s cardiac rehabilitation clinic, which she claims was one of the best things that happened during her recovery.

“One of the great things about the program is that you’re meeting up with other people who’ve been through similar circumstances; not all the

same but similar, having all had significant heart events,” Mrs Skilbeck said.

She is now an active volunteer, helping others through their feelings of nerves and hesitation about recovery.

Mrs Skilbeck also helps guide participants through the education side of rehabilitation that includes the importance of diet, exercise, knowing your risk factor and the structure of the heart.

She also provides emotional support which is so important for recovery.

The rehabilitation clinic aims to help people with heart disease to live independent and active lives.

It encourages lifestyle changes that may further reduce the risk of heart problems.

For anyone who has had treatment for a cardiac event or surgery in a public or private metropolitan or Geelong hospital, a referral is usually sent to the South West Healthcare team as part of the discharge process.

A GP or other specialist can also refer, along with self-referral.

For more information contact 5563 4000 or visit the clinic, which is based at Warrnambool Community Health in Koroit Street.

Rail service unreliable

MEMBER for South West Coast, Roma Britnell has again slammed the state government in Parliament for the “terrible punctuality” of VLine’s Warrnambool rail services.

She also alleged Labor had continually failed to deliver on its

promised new Warrnambool line trains.

This follows VLine’s Warrnambool line failing to meet VLine’s target of 92 per cent of service’s arriving within the designated time frame for every month of 2023.

“Such a punctuality record is by far the worst of VLine’s long distance and suburban rail services,” Ms Britnell said.

“In addition, VLine’s compensation to travellers after

failing to meet punctuality targets is also accessible to primarily city-based Myki pass users.

“The punctuality figures for VLine’s Warrnambool line are shamefully low, with just over half arriving on schedule in 2023.”

Ms Britnell believes South West Coast residents are not able to rely on the VLine services they need to attend their medical appointments, family commitments and important

events.

“For the entirety of last year, there was not a single month in which the Warrnambool VLine service met its punctuality target,” she said.

“It’s a disgrace that the VLine service has not once met its targets on the Warrnambool line over the past year, not once.

“Long suffering residents taking the train receive no compensation, as only myki pass

users qualify for compensation under this Labor government. Yes fares are cheaper, but that doesn’t mean we should accept poor performance.”

Ms Britnell called for additional, new modern trains that are accessible and on time.

“If we want to encourage public transport usage, we need to ensure the public has confidence there will be a train and it will be on time,” Ms Britnell said.

Shark Tank for south west

THE south west will this month host its very own version of ‘Shark Tank.’

The second Ideas Place pitch night will be held on Thursday, March 21 in Port Fairy.

Five emerging entrepreneurs will have five minutes to pitch their innovative business idea to a panel of judges, with a total pool of up to $23,000 in seed funding available.

Sherri Symons won the first pitch night in July last year, with her idea to use low-grade wool as an organic fertiliser.

This idea earned Sherri $10,000 in seed funding.

Since that time, she said her business had gone from strength to strength.

“It’s absolutely thriving; it’s growing exponentially,” she said.

“It’s very difficult for a product-based business to begin in this current economic climate, but people have been so welcoming and really keen to give something new a try.

“I’m already looking at having to upgrade equipment because of how much I’m moving on, all over Australia.

“At the moment I’m getting ready for the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show where I really hope that I can educate people on my product and open people’s eyes to something that is different.”

While Ms Symons won’t be able to attend the pitch night due to the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show being on the same day, she strongly encouraged anyone nurturing the

spark of a new business idea, or even those who just want to be amongst the first to hear about innovate ideas from South West start-ups, to head along.

“It was amazing to have so many people watching us and listening to us, and reaching out later on,” she said.

“The people that reached out after the event were incredible and people are still reaching out and coming up at markets to me and having a chat about it,” Sherri said.

“It’s very much that networking and building up of friendships between businesses.

“Your business might be at the complete opposite end of the scale to another business, but their insights can still really help.”

Sherri said that through The Ideas Place program she has kept in contact with several past participants and had developed strong friendships with other businesses that were involved.

“Being a part of the program and the pitch night was the best decision I have ever had,” she said.

“My product would not be launched without The Ideas Place and the pitch night.”

The Ideas Place Pitch Night will run from 6pm-8pm on Thursday, March 21 at the Port Fairy Bowls Club.

Tickets are $10 which includes light catering and those aged under 16 years are free.

Irrigation works underway

THE Brierly Recreation Reserve redevelopment project took a step forward last week with the installation of a subsurface irrigation and draining system.

This system will not only save volunteer time in setting up and moving sprinklers, it will be automated to run at optimal times of the day, saving on water.

The drainage system will also allow for more games to be played in winter than would otherwise be possible, especially after heavy rain.

This is an important feature, with the ground to host soccer matches for the first time.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said he was pleased to see work on the redevelopment progressing well.

“Brierly is such an important precinct,” Cr Blain said.

“North Warrnambool has really expanded over the past decade with so many new homes, and I really hope these upgrades help Brierly Christ Church Cricket Club and the Warrnambool Rangers Football Club continue to grow and thrive.

“Having secured a lighting

and electrical contractor at our February meeting, it’s really good news that they will be able to hit the ground running and work in with the rest of the project.”

Stage one of the Brierly

Recreation Reserve Eastern Oval redevelopment area includes an upgrade of the playing surface, installation of two full-sized soccer pitches with improved drainage, sub-surface irrigation, a new synthetic cricket pitch, LED

lighting (200 lux), fencing and the demolition of an old pavilion.

Work is expected to be complete by the end of June.

The project is supported by the Victorian Government, who committed $1 million through

its Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Council is continuing to advocate for funding for stage two of the project, which would include a new multi-purpose pavilion with change rooms.

The Warrnambool FitSkills Pilot Program is being led by Australian Catholic University physiotherapist and PhD candidate James Czencz.

“We aim to test whether FitSkills can run in a rural setting,” Mr Czencz said. “We want to promote inclusivity by catering to adults with cerebral palsy, or a similar condition, who require wheeled mobility to access community facilities.”

Through the 12-week trial FitSkills participants will have access to gym facilities with personalised workouts. Deakin University will also be involved as each participant will have a Deakin health student as their gym buddy. Challenges that can be faced by many

include not knowing what exercises to do and not having someone to exercise with.

“The project focuses on improving the quality of life and participation in community-based physical activities for adults who use wheeled mobility and are often marginalised due to physical and social inaccessibility,” Mr Czencz said.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said council was pleased to be involved.

“We’re excited to welcome FitSkills to Warrnambool,” Cr Blain said.

“We believe it will not only improve physical health for adults with cerebral palsy who use wheelchairs but also foster genuine relationships and connections within the community.

“We’re all looking forward to what can be achieved over the 12-week pilot program and beyond.”

Your chance to fly high

ARE you a teenager who would love to fly, or are interested in a possible career in the Air Force?

The Australian Air Force Cadets (413 squadron) is encouraging anyone with an interest in flying, who would love to make new friends, experience challenges and develop leadership and survival skills to join the group.

Secondary school students from the age of 12 through to 15 are welcome to become cadets and they can then continue their cadet career through until the age of 18.

As well as enjoying flying experiences, cadets also participate in ceremonial services, take part in physical education activities and gain team-building skills. A recruit information night will be held at the Pertobe Road barracks from 6.45pm next Thursday, March 7. All welcome.

Poetry comp added to festival

KOROIT is about to add another piece of Irish authenticity to its annual Irish festival.

Poets far and wide are being encouraged to put pen to paper for the Koroit Irish Festival Poetry Championship.

The championship is open to all festival ticket holders, with poems to have, as part of their content, references to Koroit or the Irish.

The festival’s 2024 theme of ‘Irish Love’ is also being encouraged as a source of inspiration.

There is a maximum of 250 words per poem.

All poems will be displayed at the festival, with the winner to be presented and read out in front of a packed house in the Koroit Theatre on the Saturday afternoon of the festival.

Koroit Irish Festival committee member

Kyra Gillespie said the festival had held a poetry competition in its early years.

“We think the time is right to bring poetry back,” Ms Gillespie said.

“Poetry and amazing writing are such an important part of Irish culture.

“We are really excited about the works people will send in to be part of it all.”

The poetry championship follows the introduction of the Kortraits art competition last year.

This will again be happening in 2024, with entries still open.

Kortraits is open for artists to enter a piece of work on a Koroit person or place.

The Australian Danny Boy Championship is also now open for entries and all three competitions can be entered by emailing info@koroitirishfestival.com.au.

The Koroit Irish Festival will run from April 26-28.

Changes to waste facility

Moyne Shire council’s Killarney waste facility will no longer accept landfill inert waste (such as concrete, sand and rubble) on-site.

The decision follows advice from the Environment Protection Agency that current landfilling was no longer compliant, with a significant investment required to bring it to an acceptable standard. This decision will not impact the ability to accept other types of waste and recyclables.

Inert waste is classified as waste that cannot disintegrate naturally and is usually building materials

like plaster, insulation, metal, bricks, cement, rubber and furniture.

Analysis shows it could cost as much as $7 million if council was to continue its current arrangements and make it compliant, or up to $2 million plus additional annual operating costs for onsite management and offsite disposal.

Mayor Cr Ian Smith said in a rate capped environment, council needed to keep a close eye on every dollar it spent.

“The cost of upgrading was far too high and would have meant we would need to increase all waste

facility fees significantly to try and recover that cost,” Cr Smith said.

“We understand this will be an inconvenience for some people, but the cost of upgrading to be compliant compared to the volumes received made it an unviable option.”

He said the Killarney facility received more than 1200 tonnes of inert waste in 2021/22.

Cr Smith said council’s waste facilities can accept up to 1m3 of inert waste per customer and there were options for inert waste disposal nearby in Warrnambool.

Brigades shine on the track

HOSE reels, hydrants and modern firefighting appliances were all put to the test by several fire brigades last weekend.

Representatives young and young at heart were seen in action on the Friendly Societies Park track competing in Warrnambool Fire Brigade’s annual Firefighter’s Championship.

The championship was open to brigades from across western Victoria.

Two days of competition saw the

juniors (under 14 and under 17 sides) compete on Saturday, while senior members (from the age of 18) competed on Sunday.

The junior competition included members from not only the Warrnambool brigade (returning after a short absence) but also Hamilton, Warracknabeal, Colac and Osmond Park.

Due to fires in Beaufort, brigades from Horsham, Stawell, Ararat and Wendouree were unable to participate.

The senior competition attracted

competitors from Warrnambool, Hamilton, Colac, Warracknabeal, Wendouree, Creswick and “Greater Geelong.

Also known as demonstrations or “demos” these competitions have a rich history in providing a social and competitive event that tests the skills and athleticism of fire fighters.

The Warrnambool Championship is one of the last events in the calendar before the state championships, which will be held in Mooroopna later this month.

Events include dry hose and equipment events while water events include using the old-fashioned hose reels, modern firefighting appliances as well as setting up a hydrant and delivering water to targets.

The junior development program at Warrnambool is now up and running and looking for interested young people between the ages of 12 and 17 who may be interested in trying this sport and making new friends.

Rapid Relief supports veterans

EX servicemen and women were served up a cooked breakfast by members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church’s Rapid Relief Team (RRT) during last weekend’s Warrnambool Veterans and Family Camp.

Organised by army veteran and advocate Adam Kent, the event provides veterans of all ages with a range of activities including walks, tours, personal training and yoga.

Adam founded the veterans’ support organisation ‘Asset Connecting Communities’ and speaks from personal experience.

“When you are in the military, everything gets done for you. There is always someone there to help fix whatever issue you might have, plus you have a ready-made community always around you,” Adam said.

“Once discharged, everything that you are used to relying on evaporates. Often veterans don’t know how to go about reconnecting and that’s where weekends like our camp help.

“The event creates the opportunity over a weekend to get active and engaged.”

Adam said programs like the Veterans and Family Camp

can reduce the time it takes for veterans to transition back into a sense of normal life from 10 years to as little as six months.

RRT local team leader for Warrnambool, Dwayne Earl, said serving up breakfast last weekend was the least they could do.

“It was an honour for the Rapid Relief Team to support Adam and this event,” Mr Earl said.

“Seeing the positive impact it has in helping veterans reintegrate with society, it’s clear just how important this type of initiative is.

“We are proud to be one of many local organisations supporting this event, which allows veterans to come together with their peers to feel support, connect and reengage with the community.”

In addition to physical activities, attendees learn about indigenous history from a local elder.

There are also family activities for kids, including art, sandcastle building and movie sessions.

The Rapid Relief Team is the charitable arm of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church.

Established in 2013, the RRT has more than 14,500 volunteers around the world who support community events and assist emergency services in times of disaster and crisis by providing meals and other support.

Lions celebrate 50 years

THE Koroit Lions Club has celebrated its 50th anniversary in style, with a dinner at the Koroit theatre.

More than 90 guests enjoyed the celebrations last Saturday night, with festivities including the presentation of a Melvin Jones Award to longstanding Lion, Bruce Lowenthal.

“Bruce has been an active member of Lions for about 40 years, which includes 20 years with the Macarthur club and 20 years with us here in Koroit,” Koroit Lions Club president Jim Madden said.

“Bruce has contributed so much to the organisation and continues to do so, both at a local, zone and district level and his work is greatly appreciated.”

‘James Richardson’ awards – which recognise long-serving members’ contributions to the organisation – were presented to Marg Everard and Daryl Funston.

“Both are very deserving recipients and were quite surprised to receive their awards,” Mr Madden said.

“Marg is a hard working volunteer manager at our Op Shop in Koroit while Daryl is very much the quiet achiever of the club.”

Also among the crowd at last Saturday night’s celebrations were representatives from Port Fairy, Warrnambool and Mortlake clubs.

Keeping an eye on progress

STUDENTS across the district will once again benefit from eye health checks thanks to the Warrnambool Lions Club.

As part of the 2024 Lions Eye Health Program, members have this week visited St Patrick’s Port Fairy and Koroit Primary School.

“We believe this program is an important one and we have been very welcoming in schools across the district,” club member Sue Amos said.

“It’s important that all children have access to regular eye health checks and we’re very happy that we can play a small role in that.”

Council push for road funds

Moyne Shire Council will seek the support of other Victorian councils to advocate for a percentage of Department of Transport budgets to be dedicated to regional roads.

Council will seek support for a motion it will move at the Municipal Association of Victoria State Council on May 17.

Mayor Cr Ian Smith said the condition of roads was the number one issue the community raised.

“Having minimum budget percentages and staffing levels for regional roads legislated would mean regional roads would get their fair share and would recognise how critical regional areas were to the state’s productivity and economy,” Cr Smith said.

“We see significant improvement works happening in Melbourne and other areas while we are driving on state-controlled roads that are just not up to scratch, it feels like we are missing out and all funding is being directed to the city.

“The Heywood-Woolsthorpe Road is a key example – put simply it’s neglected and it’s dangerous for all users – but is a key freight route to the Port of Portland, critical to transport products which help boost the state’s economy.”

Cr Smith said motorists across the district can’t help but feel they’d been forgotten when seeing huge new tunnels aimed at improving connections to the Port of Melbourne, but key freight routes to our ports are falling apart.

“If we can put a united front to the government, it will show them we are serious about seeing significant improvements to the statecontrolled road network,” Cr Smith said.

“Ensuring minimum budget allocations is a simple way to make a significant difference and this is another phase of Moyne’s strong advocacy for road improvements – which has previously involved meetings with the Minister and key Department staff.

“We had the Minister visit last year and I think she saw firsthand there were (and still are) serious issues with our roads.”

Test centre open to public

RESIDENTS will have the chance to visit the Otway International Test Centre at Nirranda South this weekend.

The carbon capture and storage research site will be open tomorrow (Saturday, March 2) giving members of the public a chance to see CO2CRC’s site first-hand.

Over the past 20 years Nirranda South has been the site of major developments into carbon capture and storage technology - with technology now set to play a major role globally in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

Visitors to the Otway International Test Centre will have the chance to discuss CO2CRC’s research with scientists and tour the site and its deep research wells during a bus tour.

Children’s activities will also be on offer and visitors can join CO2CRC staff for morning tea or lunch.

A barista will be on-site serving coffee from 10am until 12noon.

CO2CRC’s current research projects (with operations taking place over 2024) involve analysing the impact of faulting on the storage of carbon dioxide deep below the surface, collecting data to enhance our storage planning, and refining new methods to improve the efficiency of the carbon dioxide storage process.

CO2CRC chief executive officer Dr Matthais Raab said the tools used for carbon capture and storage had evolved significantly in the past 20 years and much of this development, now used globally, originated at Nirranda South at the Otway International Test Centre.

“Tomorrow, Saturday March 2, is a unique opportunity for members of the community to visit the site and learn about what we do first hand,” Dr Raab said.

The OITC will be open between 10am and 3pm. Bus tours will depart at 11am and 1pm.

The Otway International Test Centre is located on Brumby’s Lane Nirranda South.

For safety reasons, visitors are requested to wear long pants, a long sleeved top and covered shoes.

Protecting our natives

NATIVE plant enthusiasts from across the district enjoyed a propagation session in Iowa last weekend.

Members of the Australian Plants Society (Warrnambool branch) gathered at the home of group president David Hanscombe and his wife Linda on Sunday to share ideas and learn some ‘tips’ on how best to sow seeds and pot cuttings, with a special focus on Australian natives.

“We currently have a smallish group of about 30 or so members who share a common interest in gardening,” member Brian Waters said. “We’re all gardening enthusiasts who share a special interest in promoting and keeping Australian natives.”

The group currently meets on the fourth Friday of each month at the Mozart Hall in Warrnambool from 8pm. New members are always welcome.

DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT by

YARDING 1406 CHANGE 116 more

Numbers increased this week to 1,406 head at Mortlake representing an increase of 116 on the previous weeks market. It was a good offering over most categories in the lead cattle, however cover and quality fell away quickly with a larger tail of crossbred cattle and with the trade cattle more so. Good weight was on offer for the grown cattle and bullocks being similar for the good mix of beef and dairy breeds on offer in the cow run albeit with less weight than the previous market. Not all the regular processors were present or active in a much stronger market over most categories. The yarding consisted of 343 grown cattle, 596 trade weights along with 450 cows and 17 grown bulls.

Bullocks gained 15 to 20c/kg and good vealers were stronger by 30 to 40c/kg. Trade steers and heifers were dearer by 20c/kg and the better covered cows remained firm with the medium to lightweight cows back some 8c/kg. Bulls gained 15c/ kg and secondary cattle were 30c/ kg softer.

Vealers this week made from 252c to 392c/kg. Trade steers and heifers were selling from 285c to 346c/kg. Grown cattle topped at 326c with manufacturing steers selling up to 240c/kg. Heavy beef cows sold from 220c to 260c/kg with medium weights selling between 165c and 210c/kg. Dairy cows were generally between 165c and 230c with grown beef bulls to 240c/kg. Market Reporter

HAMILTON SHEEP MARKET

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2024

DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT by MLA’s

Total Yarding: 16000 (+10000)

Sheep Yarding: NQ (-6000) Lamb Yarding: 16000 (NQ)

With the warmer weather, diminishing summer crops and dry feed lacking protein, Hamilton agents yarded 15,500 Lambs at their weekly market representing an increase of 6,500 head. Quality overall was very good with an excellent selection of trade weight lambs on offer, however, with the increase in numbers there was a larger tail lacking cover and size in the offering compared to last market.

Not all processors were present and those on the rail were not fully engaged. Restocker and feeder interest was evident securing lambs destined for the paddocks in South East SA along with local areas. The market overall was softer by $10/head over some categories not all. The heavy lambs were most effected, dependent on quality with the Lambs back to the paddock remaining firm.

The best of the heavy Lambs sold to $190/head with most Lambs to the trade realizing between 570c and 650c/kg cwt over most categories. Light Lambs 12 to 16kg sold from $50 to $117/head with the Lambs to the trade weighing 18 to 22kg selling from $115 to $150/head. 22 to 26kg Lambs sold from $136 to $170/head with Hoggets topping at $120/head. Market Reporter Chris Agnew.

What would you would get if you cross an you angry sheep and a grumpy cow? An animal that’s totally in a baaaaaad moooood!

New program for talented athletes

THE South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) has launched a new program designed to offer personalised support for the region’s highest-level athletes.

The APEX program, an acronym for Advancing Performance to Enhance eXcellence, offers tailored management to athletes who are competing at a state or national level, or are otherwise advanced in their sporting pathway.

“The APEX program is really designed to support the individual athlete and what their specific needs are” said SWAS Chief executive officer (CEO), Andrew Sloane.

“SWAS is moving away from a model of running general education for these athletes who are operating at a higher level, and instead, is

really engaging with what they, their family and their coaches have identified as a need”.

Athletes who are accepted into the APEX program will undertake three milestone achievements in order to be supported by SWAS in their chosen services.

“We are supporting these athletes to develop an elite mindset, by implementing the behaviours seen at the highest levels of sport,”

Mr Sloane said.

For those athletes who are not yet at a state level, SWAS will be continuing to run its well-known sport programs covering sports of cycling, netball, clay target shooting, golf, hockey and tennis, under the banner of ASCEND; an acronym for Accessing Skilled Coach Educators to Nurture Development.

“The ASCEND sport programs are conducted in conjunction with the State Sporting Associations in order to provide further preparation of athletes for state and national championships or selections into representative squads,” Mr Sloane said.

Potential athletes interested in the APEX program may apply at any time, however there is a cap of 25 positions at any one time. With strong interest already being shown, athletes are encouraged to apply early – head to swas.org.au/apex for further details.

Athletes interested in the ASCEND sporting programs should head to swas.org.au and follow the South West Academy of Sport on social media for application information.

AUSSIE TITLES

Chequered flag for Wick and Thorne

A THRILLING night of racing at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway culminated in the awarding of the Victorian titles for modified sedans and street stocks last Saturday night.

After a long night of heat racing on Friday, teams returned to the track on Saturday eager to earn their place in the record books.

In the modified sedans, Queensland’s Joel Berkley made his way to the front only to suffer a tyre failure which ended his night.

Former national champion Brock Atkins also faced early setbacks and relinquished his lead, leaving the path open for Tasmanian Jakobe Jetson who grabbed the lead with just over 20 laps to go.

However, it was Bendigo’s Brad Wick who soon took control and dominated the rest of the race to claim a Victorian title win.

Second place went to Brody Chrystie while Jakobe Jetson finished third.

The street stocks also provide plenty of track action.

Eight-time national champion Anthony Beare was quick to lead the group but power steering issues saw him surrender the lead to Hayden Norman.

But it was Nathan Thorne who stole the limelight.

Starting from the B Main, Thorne advanced to position 18 in the main event and fought his way through the pack to take the chequered flag – and the Victorian title.

The Northern Territory’s Jack Yates impressed the crowd to clinch second while Jason Duell, who started from position 15, impressed to take third.

Wallis wins again

TWO of the region’s best runners enjoyed back-to-back wins at the Terang and District Lions Club Fun Run last Friday.

Warrnambool’s Ben Wallis and Camperdown’s Elle Price were the first man and woman home, respectively, just as they had been last year.

The 5.92-kilometre trek between Noorat and Terang kicked off for its 42nd year with some of the most prominent athletes lacing up for a competitive event.

Terang and District Lions Club Fun Run and Walk co-organiser Stephen O’Connor said a larger percentage of runners than usual had signed up for this year’s event.

“I’ve talked to a few people who said more than three quarters of entrants were runners this year,” he said.

“That’s the figure you like to get each year.”

Mr O’Connor said it was fantastic to see Price and Wallis each claim a back-to-back victory.

“Ben has been a prolific runner who gave away running for 18 years, but over the last 10 years or so has run second and third a number of times.

“For him to have now notched two wins over the last two years with tidy performances, he’s done very well.

“Elle Price has now won three, including the last two, with her first coming in 2017, and she’s become a real talent.”

Second-placed Sebastian Conheady, grew up in

Noorat.

Mr O’Connor said the second woman home, Rylee Foreman, proved herself someone to watch over the next few years.

“She had an eye-catching run,” he said.

“She won the under 15 section and was second woman overall and I believe she could be a force to contend with.”

Results were as follows:

Open male – first Ben Wallis (19.41), second Sebastian Conheady, third Alex Harvey.

Open female – first Elle Price (23:13), second Rylee Foreman, third Alicia Boyd.

The John Keane first local male home – Sebastian Conheady.

The John Keane first local female home – Rose Beasley.

Veterans (40-49) – Ben Wallis and Alicia Boyd.

Veterans (50+) – Joe Matthews and Sue McConnell.

Under 18 male – first Tyler Vickers, second Mark Lehmann, third Ben Carlin.

Under 18 female – Rose Beasley, Jess Bell, Stella Horspole.

Under 15 male – David Boyd, Riley Beames, Michael Lougheed.

Under 15 female – Rylee Foreman, Felicity Wood, Pippa Kempton.

Under 13 male – Quinn Clark, Dane Nicholls, Oliver Clarke.

Under 13 female – Charlotte Versace, Lucia Clarke, Beth Heffernan.

Summer pennant concludes

WARRNAMBOOL’S indoor bowls summer pennant concluded with three grand finals last week.

All three matches were of a high level and entertained the crowd of more than 80 spectators at the stadium, as well as those watching the live-stream. In division one, Heytesbury Honeys proved too strong for Allansford Cougars in a very high standard game.

Allansford played some great bowls in the early ends but Heytesbury, with their four players in outstanding form, jumped out to an 8-0 lead after five ends.

Despite Allansford’s best efforts, the Honeys were able to carry on to a comfortable victory.

The division two final between Koroit Hornets and Port Fairy Seagulls was dominated early by Koroit, who jumped out to a 12-3 lead after six ends. Koroit skipper Debbie Keane unfortunately took the kitty off the mat on end seven for a four-shot penalty and Port Fairy rallied to be within two shots by end nine.

Port Fairy skipper Gill Phillips was unlucky, knocking the kitty off on ends 10 and 11 and Koroit looked to be home with a nine-shot lead.

Not to be outdone, Port Fairy won the next six ends and were back to within two shots coming into the last.

Under great pressure, Koroit managed one shot on the last end to win by three shots.

Division three was the closest match of the night.

Allansford Pumas jumped out to an early eight-shot lead over favourites Dennington Devils.

The Devils worked their way back into the game and when Allansford skipper Clarrie Matthews trailed the kitty off the mat and lost two shots on the replay, the scores were locked at 11-all after 10 ends.

The next seven ends saw single shots going either way leaving Allansford one-up coming into the last end.

Down in the head before his first bowl, Allansford skipper Clarrie trailed the kitty to the back of the mat

for a match-winning single shot.

Division 1: Heytesbury Honeys 19 (Brett Mungean, Lara Mungean, Peter Baker and skip Allen Armistead)

def Allansford Cougars 8 (Vince Lenehan, Jacinta Marney, Doug Byron and skip Rob McCrabb).

Division 2: Koroit Hornets 22 (Ben Gardiner, Vivian O’Grady, Justin Rasmussen and skip Debbie Keane)

def Port Fairy Seagulls 19 (Brian Arnold, Des Phillips, Maurice Mahoney and skip Gill Phillips).

Division 3: Allansford Pumas 16 (Shirley Ladhams, Ken Cathie, James Byron and skip Clarrie Matthews)

def Dennington Devils 14 (Michael Childs, Cody Childs, Trevor Crow and skip Keith Cameron).

Congratulations to all winners and runners-up for an entertaining evening.

The next pennant season (winter) will start on Monday, April 8 at the Arc Stadium.

Names for teams to be given to the club delegates before March 25.

Pickleball growth thrills Val

PICKLEBALL enthusiast Val Bertrand will always remember the number one rule she was taught when learning about the sport – don’t go in the ‘kitchen.’

“The kitchen. What’s the kitchen? That was all I was thinking at the time,” Val recalled.

“It was 2017 and I was over in America visiting some friends when they invited me to join them in a game of pickleball. I had never heard of that.

“Back then I was a netball administrator at the stadium (Warrnambool). I’ve always been fit and healthy so was keen to give this ‘pickleball’ a go so I went along.”

It only took a couple of games of this newlyfound sport for this visitor from Oz to be hooked.

“It’s an amazing game that can be played by anyone and that’s one of the beauties of the sport. In America there was even a category for people with Parkinson’s which I thought was extra special,” she said.

“There are many quirky rules to the game including that you’re not allowed in the kitchen (the space between the net and a line marked on the floor) before the serve is returned.

“I kept being told don’t go in the kitchen – but I just kept thinking I haven’t been in there, I wonder what’s in there?”

With so much new-found enthusiasm for the game, Val was keen to return to her Warrnambool home and introduce the sport to the town.

“I brought home a few paddles and got in touch with someone in Western Australia who sent me over a couple of beginner sets to get started.

“Our first court was abit of tape laid down on the netball court at the stadium and I got some PVC pipe for side poles and cut down a volleyball net.” It wasn’t long before Val introduced pickleball to the district and soon after Warrnambool City Pickleball came to fruition.

“Today we have about 80 active players in our club and to see our city host a huge pickleball tournament last weekend, which attracted hundreds of competitors of all ages and abilities, was amazing,” Val said.

“It’s lovely to see the sport growing.”

More than 200 players registered for the first ever Warrnambool Pickleball Open last weekend, with the majority travelling to the city especially for the event.

Premiership for Raiders

BRIERLY Northern Raiders have won the Warrnambool District Cricket Association’s women’s grand final in a nail-biter at Reid Oval.

The Raiders claimed their maiden women’s premiership in a remarkable final which came down to the last over.

Call out for

HAVE you ever wanted to become a local footy umpire but didn’t know how to go about it?

The Warrnambool District Football Umpires Association (WDFUA) is looking to expand its numbers this season and is now welcoming new umpires of all ages and abilities to its fold.

WDFUA president Andrew Lougheed said the group had introduced a range of changes this season in the hope of, ultimately, leading to an increase in umpire numbers.

“These changes closely align with a South West Sport program in which we are actively participating, Respect in Sport,” he said.

“We have adopted a fun, flexible philosophy which we hope will resonate with potential umpire recruits.

“We aim to incentivise club umpires to make the transition from club to association.”

Among the many incentives was a junior development fund, established to provide free umpire gear to new junior umpires.

“Umpiring allows participants to earn money, be involved in local footy, exercise and make new friends,” Mr Lougheed said.

AFL Victoria has this year supported the WDFUA in introducing a women and girls liaison position – which has been filled by the association’s senior boundary coach, Caitlin Kavanaugh.

AFL Victoria has also appointed two casuals to support retention and recruitment initiatives in the region and, for the first time, one of the group’s junior mentors is a female boundary umpire.

“We also have a husband and wife team taking charge of our junior umpire development training (BUMP) which is exciting,” Mr Lougheed said.

“And we have introduced a development field umpire coach role to assist umpires transition from boundary

umpiring to the field.

“They will also be available to help field umpire recruits as they start their umpiring journey.”

This season sees the introduction of a new coaching model that shares the load between umpire development and umpire appointments.

Game day changeroom facilities have also come under the spotlight and the umpires association has acknowledge that its facilities had not, in the past, met modern-day needs.

As a result, the association has entered into a seasonal tenancy agreement with the Warrnambool City Council to use the away team’s change rooms in the new Reid Oval pavilion for training purposes. This provides equal facilities for both

male and female umpires.

“We also have full access to the Reid Oval for all our training sessions, which are held Mondays 6pm-7pm and Wednesdays from 5pm (inclusive of junior training), Mr Lougheed said.

The group is also looking to explore the option of a regional satellite training oval, outside Warrnambool, to reduce travel time.

“We know that for some people travelling to Warrnambool each week for training can be a possible hurdle when it comes to deciding whether or not to join us, and we’re open to suggestions,” Mr Lougheed said.

The recent introduction of an online newsletter also ensures all umpires –and prospective umpires and sponsors

– are kept well informed.

“It has certainly been a very busy few months for our association as we work towards the start of what no doubt will be a very busy but rewarding 2024 football season,” Mr Lougheed said.

“We have also re-engaged with our life members post-COVID and will hold our first life members function sometime this month.”

An information night will be held in the umpires’ rooms at Reid Oval, Warrnambool, on Wednesday, March 13.

A session for parents of prospective junior recruits will run from 5pm-5.45pm (juniors are welcome to join the training session during that time) while the senior information session will start at 6pm.
