Midfield donation launches appeal

THE Camperdown Residential Aged Care Appeal was officially launched yesterday (Thursday) with a $100,000 gift from The Midfield Group.

South West Healthcare (SWH) hopes to raise $562,000 to furnish and equip its $39.6 million aged care facility in Camperdown, which is set to open mid next year.

Donations will be used to help fund identified needs including the equipping and furnishing of 36 residents’ bedrooms, the establishment of kitchen and therapy gardens, the purchase of a commercial barbecue and outdoor furniture, the decking-out of a hair and nail salon, and the equipping of an indoor gym.

The Midfield Group donation will finance a $40,000 purpose-built aged care outdoor exercise circuit, and furnish and equip four of the 36 bedrooms, including two specifically designed for people with special-purpose needs.

A $147,000 bequest fund, as was the wish of Camperdown stalwart, the late Pam Redgewell, will be used for the purchase of a new $100,000 residents’ bus along with the furnishing and equipping of another four bedrooms.

The auction proceeds of the current Merindah Lodge bus, successfully fundraised for in 2016, will also be put towards the appeal.

South West Healthcare chief executive officer Craig Fraser said the support of local communities was critical to this appeal.

“We’re calling on all businesses, clubs, groups, workplaces, schools, churches, families and individuals to help us raise the money we need to equip and furnish this stunning facility, inside and out,” Mr Fraser said.

“We know this is a really big ask but this is our one chance to make this new residential facility for some of our most vulnerable community members the very best it can be.”

Being built alongside SWH’s Camperdown hospital, the new aged care facility will replace the existing 48-year-old Merindah Lodge, officially opened in 1976.

The new facility comprises 36 bedrooms with ensuites (including special purpose, disability compliant, and rooms for couples) grouped in small households to create home-like environments.

Incorporating best practice, evidencebased aged care design underpinned by dementia-friendly principles, there are multiple resident and family living and dining spaces including discreet indoor, outdoor and activity-dedicated areas.

Inside there’s a community café, a gym, a reflection space, and a hair and nail salon.

Outside, extensive landscaping will promote physical and mental wellbeing and encourage social interaction via a kitchen garden, The Midfield Group-financed purpose-built aged care persons’ exercise circuit and multiple spaces for families and friends to come together.

“We believe the architecture maximises stunning views towards the lakes and craters Camperdown is so well known for,” Mr Fraser said.

Opportunity for business group

CHIEF executive officers from two successful regional Victorian chambers of commerce will feature at Warrnambool business breakfasts this month.

Warrnambool business operators will be able to hear CEO of the Geelong Chamber of Commerce Jeremy Crawford and CEO of Commerce Ballarat Jodie Gillett talk about the value and benefits of having a group to represent businesses and commerce.

The free breakfast events will be held at the Mid City Motel on Tuesday, March 26 and Wednesday, April 24.

These sessions form part of council’s engagement with the business community to gauge interest in forming a business representative group, such as a chamber of commerce.

“This is a great opportunity for local business operators and owners to find out what a contemporary chamber of commerce can do,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said.

Mr Crawford heads a chamber that has been in existence for more than 170 years while Ms Gillett has led Commerce Ballarat since 2008 and along the way been awarded an Order of Australia medal for service to business in Ballarat.

“It’s been several years since there was an active business representative group in Warrnambool so we’re assessing the level of interest from local businesses in forming a new group,” Cr Blain said.

Along with hearing from Ms Gillett and Mr Crawford, attendees will be provided with an update on the work done so far on forming a business representative group.

Council manager economic development and events Steve Hoy said the final step in this process would be a vote to see if there was enough passionate people to form an inaugural Warrnambool Business Representative Group committee.

“Input into the structure and objectives of a business representative group will also be sought,” Mr Hoy said.

“Even if a business owner has not been involved in this process to date, it’s not too late to get involved and share your thoughts.”

Should a chamber or similar group be formed, it would be a community-driven organisation.

At this stage council is facilitating a discussion about the setting up of a group and how it might be structured.

People interested in attending or who want to learn more can email ecodev@warrnambool.vic.gov.au.

Gillin Foundation donates another $100,000

THE Gillin Boys Foundation has donated another $100,000 to the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.

The presentation – the second $100,000 to be donated in the past 12 months – was made during last Saturday night’s aptly named ‘Green Night’ at the Simpson Speedway.

The volunteer-based organisation (now in its fourth year) has been working extremely hard to bring awareness of muscular dystrophy to the forefront in the local community and beyond, as well as raising much needed funds towards research, clinical trials, and treatments for muscular dystrophy.

This most recent donation brings the total raised, since 2016, to close to $500,000.

Gillin Boys Foundation chairperson Daniel O’Keefe, vicechairperson Jessica Nolte and committee member Ashley Gillin welcomed Murdoch Children’s Research Institute scientists Chantal Coles and Peter Houweling to Simpson Speedway last weekend to make the presentation.

“We love hearing about the progress of their trials and how they are slowly but surely finding more answers to many questions,” Ms Nolte said.

“We understand the funds support many of their trials and projects including an innovative blood bank, and some funds also go towards supporting extra resources in student scholarships in their PHD studies, ultimately helping the lab in their research.”

The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute maintains regular contact with the Gillin Boys Foundation, inspiring its members to continue their work in raising awareness within the Warrnambool community.

“Chantal and Peter attended Green Night in what was, in their minds, a show of support for our foundation,” chairperson Daniel O’Keefe said.

“They were completely blown away when I announced another $100,000 was coming their way.”

It had only been eight months since the last large donation was made to the institute.

“What a surprise to be presented with another generous donation from the Gillin Boys Foundation,” senior research scientist (muscle research) Dr Chantal Coles said.

“This is an incredible achievement by Chris and the Gillin

Boys Foundation; they have an amazing community around them and we thank the foundation for choosing our team to help in the fight against Duchenne - we are determined with your help to make a difference.”

Foundation co-founder Christopher Gillin said he was extremely excited to be able to make another substantial contribution to the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.

“It’s very exciting to make this donation; the institute is leading the way into helping find a cure for muscular dystrophy,” Christopher said.

“My late brother Aaron and I, along with our parents Ashley and Mandy started fundraising from humble beginnings back in 2016 by selling green shoelaces and stickers with the goal of making a difference by bringing awareness to the disease we both suffer from and raising much needed

funds to help find a cure.

“To be able to present another $100,000 within 12 months is fantastic. These achievements for the foundation don’t occur without the fantastic support we receive from the local community and beyond, so on behalf of the foundation I’d like to say a big thank you to every single person that has made a contribution large or small to our Fight For A Cure; every dollar raised moves us closer to a world without Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy”.

The next major fundraising event for the Gillin Boys Foundation will be the 2024 Cassign Cup on Friday April 5 and 6.

Hampden Football Netball League clubs Warrnambool and Koroit will battle it out, with the cup awarded to the club that wins the most games on the day.

Folkie crowds brave the heat

DESPITE last weekend’s high temperatures, an estimated crowd of just over 12,000 people flocked to Port Fairy for the annual Folk Festival over the long weekend.

As has become tradition, the ‘Folkie’ once again saw thousands of visitors head to the coastal town to enjoy the music, food, entertainment and market stalls the event has become widely known for.

As temperatures soared into the high 30s across the district during the four-day event, organisers ensured patrons had access to water and cooling areas.

Due to the extreme heat on Saturday, a few outdoor events were cancelled including shows on Fiddlers Green in the village and the Flag Circle activities on-site.

The street markets and kids’ zone were also closed earlier than planned due to the heat.

To ensure the safety and comfort of audiences and volunteers, festival organisers ensured there was extra fans, cooling areas and free water stations (for refilling bottles).

Patrons were also notified of any schedule changes/ updates on the festival’s free app and notifications were also placed on the main screens next to the stages.

Local artists from Warrnambool and surrounding towns featured on the program along with some of the greatest folk artists of our time including Graham Nash, Judy Collins, Ralph McTell and Sharon Shannon.

An estimated 20,000 people visited the township of Port Fairy over the weekend, with the two Moyne Shire caravan parks fully booked well in advance.

According to festival program director Justin Rudge, this year’s event was “simply amazing.”

“I’m still on a high from such a great weekend,” Mr Rudge said.

“Thankyou to everyone who stayed on to experience the festival and who braved the extreme heat on Saturday – your patience and understanding was an inspiration and we appreciate your care and kindness towards each other and our community.”

Mr Rudge also paid tribute to the hard-working and “always happy” volunteers, to the passionate Port Fairy village traders, and to the production team (including those who worked hard to keep the festival clean and safe) for all their work.

“We salute everyone who worked hard and contributed over the long weekend, leading up to the event and beyond,” Mr Rudge said.

“We’re all going to have a few days rest and then get to work on putting next year’s plan into action.”

The 2025 event is scheduled to be held on March 7-10.

Most scenic bike trail in Oz

THE Warrnambool

Foreshore Promenade has been named as Australia’s most scenic bike trial.

TimeOut published a list of the top 10 scenic cycling routes, with Warrnambool topping the list ahead of the Moreton Bay Cycleway in Queensland, Melbourne’s Jones Creek Trail and the Outer Harbour Greenway in Adelaide.

Over 200 routes were scored as part of the study, with totals based on trail ratings and reviews, total number of Instagram hashtags and number of photos uploaded on Alltrails.

The promenade runs 5.7 kilometres from the Warrnambool Breakwater to Point Ritchie – Moyjil at the mouth of the Hopkins River.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain welcomed the news.

“To be named as the most scenic bike trail in Australia is a really impressive feat considering the competition,” Cr Blain said.

“But it makes perfect sense. The promenade is just such an amazing place.

“It’s somewhere that is enjoyed year-round too. Even on a cold and windy day, you’ll see people down there in their jackets walking or riding, and I think that says a lot about just how good the trail is.

“Rain or shine, it’s a really popular place that is a real magnet for tourists as well as being somewhere that enhances the liveability of Warrnambool for locals.”

GUNDITJMARA Aboriginal

Co operative is one of 15 charities around Australia set to benefit from a dollar-for-dollar fundraising campaign.

The ‘Double Donation Campaign’ will see Beyond Bank match all financial donations made to the organisation next Wednesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 21.

Gunditjmara is hoping the local community will get behind the campaign and donate what they can over the two days.

“Family violence is not and never has been a part of Aboriginal culture but one of the very real problems today is funding for safety planning for Aboriginal women

and children,” Belinda Payne, community services general manager said.

The Double Donation campaign is powered by the Beyond Bank Australia Foundation (the charitable arm of Beyond Bank) which works closely with not-forprofit organisations around the nation to ensure that they have the support they need to grow and prosper.

This is the fifth year for the successful fundraiser, which saw more than $330,000 going back into the local community in 2023.

Each charity/organisation will be given two days to encourage supporters to donate a tax-deductible amount that will then be matched by Beyond Bank, up to a total amount of $10,000 per charity.

Double donation day for Gunditjmara

At the close of the fundraising event, the final donations will be tallied, doubled and provided straight back to each charity to use in its various community programs.

The ongoing cost of living crisis has increased the number of Aussies experiencing financial and emotional stress, resulting in an increase in the number of people seeking support services from charities, according to Peter Rutter, chief community and strategy officer for Beyond Bank Australia.

“What we’re seeing is that many of these charities are struggling to provide their usual services due to rising costs, increased demand and a drop in donations,” Mr Rutter said.

“All of the charities involved provide real frontline support, assisting the people and families most in need.

“Beyond Bank is proud to provide another way for community organisations to strengthen the impact of their fundraising, allowing them to continue to provide these services for their local communities.”

The Double Donation Campaign kicks off next Wednesday, March 20.

Beyond Bank will announce the final fundraising results after the campaign.

To donate to Gunditjmara on March 20 and 21 simply head to www.gunditjmara. org.au.

For more information about the ‘Double Donation’ campaign call Grant Howland, Beyond Bank, on 0497 335 962.

Inspirational women recognised

OONAGH Kilpatrick, Melanie Macilwain and Kim Parker have received this year’s ‘Inspiring Women of Moyne’ awards as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.

The trio were officially announced as award recipients during a community event at Glyph Gallery in Port Fairy last Friday morning.

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith and deputy mayor Karen Foster selected the winners from an extensive list of nominees.

Cr Smith said the nominations highlighted the huge role women play across our Moyne communities.

“The calibre of nominations this year was unbelievable, every single nominee was worthy of an award, so congratulations to everyone who was nominated,” Cr Smith said.

“We received over 80 nominations for more than 50 women, presenting remarkable women from all walks of life who inspire others and make a difference to the lives of those around them,” Cr Foster said.

“It’s so pleasing to see these women recognised. Your stories, work and lives are an inspiration to us all.”

Oonagh Kilpatrick, from Southern Cross, was recognised for her dedication and passion for dairy farming.

“Oonagh actively promotes the suitability practices on farm to schools and the wider community,” her nominator wrote.

“She often hosts open days on her farm to promote and educate students on what happens on farm but also the career pathways within the industry that are not

only on farm but also beyond the farm gate.”

Oonagh is also on the Food and Fibre Great South Coast board and actively promotes not only dairy but food and fibre for our region both here in the region and also interstate. She understands and values the food and fibre industries in our region for not only those on farm and directly employed in the industries, but the flow on to the wider community.

“Oonagh is the type of person who attracts others to her in a crowded room; people want to engage with her as she exudes enthusiasm and passion for our industry and is also a woman who empowers other women to grow and further their capabilities,” her nominator wrote.

Melanie Macilwain initiated the Port Fairy Running Club in 2023.

According to her nominator, Melanie is a “one-of-a-kind sort of woman.”

“Melanie is the type of person you meet and instantly want to surround yourself with - I met Mel by chance, a local mum who was up for a chat and willing to make new friends,” her nomination read.

In 2023 Mel started the Port Fairy Running Club after seeing a ‘gap’ in the local community and wanting to bring running locals together.

Now the group meets twice a week and welcomes beginners through to experienced runners.

“This group has changed my favourite activity from a solo run to a social event

and helped me connect with so many other wonderful people in our community,” the nomination read.

“Mel is also a local artist who has run workshops at the Port Fairy Women’s Weekend, donated artwork and raised money for local charities and volunteers her time at Park Run.

“Mel is a wonderful addition to the Moyne Community inspiring health and fitness, socialisation and great community spirit.”

Mortlake’s Kimberly Parker, who moderates the town’s community facebook page, also organised a ‘Yes’ vote campaign in the town and was described by her nominator as “kind, caring, thoughtful and selfless, exactly what we need in women of Moyne; she makes our town a better place.”

Safety improvements at intersection

WORK to create a safer intersection at the Botanic and Queens road roundabout will start next week.

The upgrade will deliver a larger roundabout to help slow traffic.

Works will also include the installation of larger traffic islands, pavement upgrades, improved pram crossings, and sharrows on approaches.

Warrnambool City Council successfully applied for funding for the project via the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said he was pleased to see work about to commence.

“It’s such a busy precinct, especially around school times, so we’re really happy to have been able to secure funding from the Australian Government

to be able to improve safety in the area,” Cr Blain said.

“We want to encourage more kids to be able to walk to school, and creating a safer intersection that’s easier to get through whether you’re walking or riding is an important part of that.

“This, along with the pedestrian crossing installed on Queens Road opposite AquaZone, were highlighted in the Botanic Precinct Local Area Traffic Management Plan – a plan which council developed along with residents, schools and businesses in the area.”

The upgrade is expected to be finished by the end of April.

Motorists can expect delays while work is under way, with the intersection to operate under the direction of traffic controllers. Outside of work hours the intersection will re-open with a reduced speed limit.

Council lobbies to protect marine life

WARRNAMBOOL Council will continue to advocate for the best possible outcome for the city in relation to the offshore renewable energy zone recently declared by the federal government.

“Council is in favour of renewable energy but this proposal is a profoundly challenging one because it enters the marine environment that is treasured and valued by our community,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said.

A 1,000 square kilometre offshore wind farm zone was announced by the federal government last week and comes within 15-20 kilometres of the Warrnambool/ Port Fairy coast line.

“Although this is a federal government decision and a planning matter over which council has no statutory power, council will continue to engage with the Australian Government to ensure the best possible outcome for the Warrnambool community,” Cr Blain said.

“But we need to be clear about this, it is a federal government decision on a federal planning issue.

“We’re aware a community meeting has been called for March 23 where the Warrnambool community will be asked about the available options.

“And while this is no time to be complacent, it is also not helpful to give people the impression that the declaration will be reversed or rescinded.

“We understand the emotions stirred up by the declaration – we feel them too - but we’ve got to be really fact-driven in our discussions with the Australian Government.

“Approaching this federal matter with a simple referendum-style “do we want it or not” binary approach will not achieve the best outcome for Warrnambool.”

The Federal Government ran a community engagement process in August last year attended by council’s chief executive officer Andrew Mason and several councillors.

Council followed up with a letter to Minister for Climate Change and Energy, the Hon Chris Bowen MP, which stated that the proposed off-shore wind zone should not be located in proximity to Warrnambool on the following grounds:

• Logan’s Beach is a recognised whale nursery for the endangered (EPBC Act) Southern Right Whale Eubalaena Australis and as such council believes a precautionary approach should be taken to protect the marine environment;

• Visual impacts – tourism is a significant component of the economy of Warrnambool. Much of the appeal of Warrnambool is its coastal location, safe beaches and views from locations such as Flagstaff Hill and Logan’s Beach. Council notes there has been little analysis or information presented in relation to the visual impacts of off shore wind energy to support the proposed zone.

• Council has previously opposed the use of seismic testing for the exploration of gas and oil and requests that the seismic testing be prohibited for off shore wind projects in the proposed zone.

• The experience in South West Victoria with on shore wind farms has been that transmission infrastructure can have significant visual amenity impacts. We believe that all transmission infrastructure must be located underground.

Cr Blain said the four core reasons remained relevant and the council would continue to engage with the Australian and Victorian governments.

“In his letter of acknowledgement to council, Minister Bowen stated that the declaration would be the start of the assessment process, after which offshore wind farm developers would be able to apply for feasibility licences to undertake research and further studies to inform appropriate offshore wind farm projects,” Cr Blain said.

Minister Bowen also advised that if a developer was granted a feasibility licence, they must undertake detailed assessments of their proposed wind farm’s impacts on marine users and the environment, and

have their project approved under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

“Council is conscious that this is a nuanced issue and we believe many in the community do not view this as a simple yes/no equation,” Cr Blain said.

“We’ve yet to see the summary of community engagement released by the Federal Government but it’s worth noting that in Gippsland there were a range of responses with about a third against the proposal, 20 per cent for it and another third conditionally supportive.”

The Gippsland offshore wind farm zone was declared in 2022, covers an area of 15,000sqkm and comes within about 10 kilometres of the coast.

Young lifesavers

SOME of Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club’s youngest competitors have shone bright on sand and water at last weekend’s junior state championships.

According to the club’s vice-president and head coach, Travis Madigan, the young lifesavers performed “amazingly well” at the event, bringing home 22 medals from the carnival.

“I could not be prouder of them all,” Madigan said.

“We had over 700 nippers at the championships, representing clubs from all over the state, and for our small club to win that many medals and to record 27 top five finishes, just outside of medal contention, in so many events was simply amazing.

“Warrnambool had 68 competitors entered which is a

huge feat in itself for us. They’ve all been training since last October for the state championships, which is a huge commitment not just from the kids but their families as well.

“We’re a very family-orientated club and that really shows at events like this.”

According to Madigan, last weekend’s results – which saw the club finish 10th overall from around 40 clubs –was one of the best to date.

“It was a very hot weekend and everyone showed great determination, skills and resilience. The crowds were huge which really spurred everyone on.”

Three Warrnambool members took out multiple medals over the weekend.

Molly McNeil won silver in the flags event and long run as well as a medal in the board relay.

Hugh Fawcett won gold in board and bronze in both the iron and board relay, while Lenny Chiller won gold in the board race and bronze in the under 9 flags and board relay.

The state championships gave youngsters from under nine through to under 13 the opportunity to compete in a variety of events both on sand and in the water.

Friday saw competitors enjoy the sprint, long run, relays and flag events on the sand.

The following two days were water events and included the board race, swim, wade and (on Sunday) teams events such as swim, board relay and acqua cam. With great results from the state championships, the Warrnambool club will now send a contingent of youth and seniors to the national championships in Maroochydore next month.

Pillowcases help children prepare

ALLANSFORD and District Primary School students are now well informed as to what to pack in the event of an emergency.

The students recently took part in a ‘pillowcase workshop’ with members of the Australian Red Cross, which helped them learn about what to prepare and pack in times of emergency.

The workshop, for students aged eight to 10 years, was aimed at teaching practical skills like what to pack for an emergency and how to prepare their minds for the thoughts and feelings that may arise before, during and after a disaster.

Students were each given a pillowcase, supplied by Australia Post, to decorate and take home to use as their personal emergency kit.

They were also encouraged to share what they learnt with families and friends.

Australia Post general manager community and stakeholder engagement, Nicky Tracey, said the pillowcase workshops help more than 6,000 children each year.

“These workshops help children living in high hazard risk areas to understand how they can prepare for a major disaster before they are in the thick of one,” Ms Tracey said.

“We are likely to face more dry, hot summers in the coming years so our work with Red Cross on pillowcase workshops is especially critical.

“The workshops and resources will arm children with practical skills in the event of a disaster.”

Printed on the outside of each pillowcase is a list of supplies children are encouraged to place inside.

This includes a first aid kit, change of clothes, radio, medications, toiletries, a blanket, pencil and paper, pet supplies, book, torch, batteries, food, water and ‘something special.’

Help shape future of goods shed

LOCAL residents have the opportunity to help shape the future of Port Fairy’s heritage-listed railway goods shed.

Moyne Shire Council is now seeking input from the community to help shape a vision for the shed’s future uses. A consultation and visioning process with the local community and other stakeholders is now underway.

It is anticipated this will provide an opportunity to share ideas and discuss options for the future use of The Goods Shed and upgrades that could potentially be undertaken.

Moyne mayor Cr Ian Smith said two drop-in sessions were planned, as well as focus groups and one-on-one discussions with stakeholders.

“We’ve completed the exterior restoration and it’s been great to see the shed have some use already, now we want to look to the future and determine how the space can be best used,” Cr Smith said.

“This work won’t undo or replace any of the other consultations that have happened, it will simply provide an opportunity to share up-to-date ideas and vision for the future use of the shed and to hopefully spark renewed discussion and interest.”

Cr Smith said the drop-in sessions would be held on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23 from 10am-12 noon at the council office on the corner of Cox and Princes streets in Port Fairy.

“If you’re not able to make those sessions, there is a survey on Engage Moyne, where you can share your thoughts and

Community input is now being sought on the future use of the railway goods shed at Port Fairy.

THE Warrnambool Botanical Gardens will be the place to be on Sunday, March 24 for a day of food and entertainment.

The third annual Multicultural Harmony Week Picnic will run from 11am until 2pm and is currently being organised by members of Warrnambool’s Multicultural Women’s Circle.

ideas,” Cr Smith said.

“A number of focus groups are also planned with key stakeholders across a range of areas including economic development, history and heritage through to youth and we

can arrange one-on-one conversations as well.”

Cr Smith said information about the consultation process and the online survey could be found on http://engage. moyne.vic.gov.au/goods-shed.

Free event for Harmony Week

The group, in conjunction with Warrnambool Neighbourhood House, will highlight Harmony Week’s theme of ‘Everyone Belongs.’

The free, family event will feature a multilingual Acknowledgment of Country, Thai temple dancers, Indian dancing, tai chi demonstrations, a coffee van and ice cream.

Women are welcome to attend the event in traditional dress and this year’s ‘wish activity’ will be for world peace.

There will be plenty on offer for young visitors, with children’s activities set to include bilingual children’s story telling, face painting, badge making and hula hooping.

New centres for early childhood studies

THE next generation of early childhood educators across the region will get to train in real-life conditions with the opening of new simulated early education centres at South West TAFE.

The new-look early childhood classrooms at the Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton campuses have been upgraded with the latest technology and equipment and the course has been updated with new training content.

The changes have been made to encourage more people to look at a career in early childhood education to address serious industry shortages being felt across the region.

South West TAFE manager education projects, John Finnerty, said the introduction of new technology, including smart screens and video conferencing facilities, would be supported by the new simulated early learning centres.

“The simulated centres are basically an extra adjoining classroom in a doublesized space that looks and feels like a childcare centre,” Mr Finnerty said.

“It means students get a real-life practical space to learn how to set up activities and be ready when they go into a real centre.

“The focus is on training industry-ready students. We aimed to upgrade facilities at each of the campuses so no matter where you study, you get the same experience.”

The Colac campus will also be upgraded as part of the total $1.28 million project.

The rooms will also be available for community playgroups and other programs and the refurbishment opens the possibility of students bringing their children to classes.

“We will look into the possibility of child minding, not a formal creche arrangement but where they could be looked after by a minder while mum or dad studies in the other part of the room,” Mr Finnerty said.

“These facilities open up possibilities for us to run more innovative programs.”

South West TAFE has worked with a project advisory group to develop new training models and will continue to review its programs.

Teaching education manager Kate Williams said the changes were designed to motivate students to become highquality early childhood educators.

“We looked at the physical space and we now have a hands-on, contemporary learning environment where the students can practice and refine their skills and apply those skills in a safe learning space,” Ms Williams said.

“The modern resources and equipment will build their confidence to go out into a real-world workplace.”

Ms Williams said the previous simulated environment was very dated and needed to be upgraded to reflect today’s modern childcare centres.

“We explored the sector to ensure we were purchasing the most modern equipment and we also had the support of an advisory group made up

of centre directors and group training organisations,” Ms Williams said.

“We were able incorporate some of their suggestions and feedback into what we purchased and what we are doing in our programs, and the changes have received really positive feedback.”

Ms Williams said the industry wanted a facility where students could get the right preparation to have the knowledge and skills needed when they started

working with children.

“Having these facilities is a point-ofdifference for South West TAFE,” Ms Williams said.

With continued high demand across the region for high-quality early childhood educators, early childhood enrolments are strong this year at South West TAFE. Demand was also high for the VETDSS program for secondary school students.

Perfect weather for school athletics

PERFECT weather and lots of families supporting students made for the perfect day at last week’s athletics sports carnival for Warrnambool West Primary School.

Physical education specialist and event organiser Heath Hackett praised all students for their efforts on the day and thanked parents for their support.

“The student engagement was amazing; everyone had loads of fun and all supported each other which was great to see,” Mr Hackett said.

Around 20 students will now go on to represent the school at the upcoming district sports, to be held at on March 25.

The day concluded with a fun parent/staff/ student relay.

Gold House (Weelan) finished the day on top of the points board after the seven events.

The new single, titled ‘Conspiracy Theory’ has been released on a 7’ record and is also available to listen to on all music streaming services.

The band is excited to see the release of their coloured vinyl, which also has an insert thanking fans.

The band travelled to Melbourne for the recording and are thrilled with how the

Canteen grant for cricket clubs

BRIERLY Christ Church and Dennington cricket clubs are two of 17 Victorian clubs to receive funding through the CitiPower Canteen Grants program.

The clubs shared in a record $81,000 in funding to improve local facilities for members and supporters.

The program, now in its sixth year, has distributed $360,000 among more than 80 local cricket clubs.

Over 100 submissions were received this year, with clubs able to use the funding to support a range of necessary upgrades, including electrical upgrades, new refrigerators, dishwashers, pie warmers and oven replacements.

Scott Russell, general manager of CitiPower, said the program was seeing real benefits and safety improvements for

players and volunteers alike.

“We all know how essential canteens are to local clubs, but it’s also the one place where electrical safety risks are most likely to be found,” Russell said.

“So far we’ve awarded grants to 86 grassroots clubs; clubs who have now directly benefitted from the program to improve their electrical infrastructure.”

The next round of canteen grant applications will open in October this year.

Clubs are invited to apply for up to $5,000 in grants to address electrical safety issues and improve services provided by cricket club canteens and clubhouses across the CitiPower, Powercor and United Energy network regions.

Both Brierly Christ Church and Dennington were successful in receiving $5,000.

Women’s football draw released

THE 2024 Western Victoria Female Football League has revealed its fixtures for the 2024 season.

The senior, under 18 and under 15 competitions will begin their 10-round season on April 14, with the grand final scheduled for July 21.

Six teams will contest the Frolic Lane Bar Senior competition in 2024.

Cavendish will debut this season in the open grade, following on from their inclusion in the under 18 competition in 2023.

Reigning premiers Hamilton Kangaroos will return, along with South Warrnambool, Tyrendarra, Horsham and Warrnambool.

There will be five sides in the Deakin University under 18 competition - South Warrnambool, Terang Mortlake, Portland Tigers, Cavendish and Horsham.

The under 15 competition will welcome a new side this season, with the Koroit Football Netball Club fielding their first team in the WVFFL.

Joining them in the junior grade will be South Warrnambool, Portland Tigers, Hamilton Kangaroos, North Warrnambool

Eagles and Port Fairy.

There will be three byes throughout the season. These will be held on May 12, June 16 and July 7. League administrator Trent Hill said there was real excitement for this year’s WVFFL competition.

“It is terrific to see Cavendish create another team and play in the senior competition and Koroit is extremely upbeat about its under 15 debut,” Hill said.

“I’m expecting a really competitive 2024 season across all grades and hopefully the female football brand can keep building in the region.”
