Public transport concerns

MEMBER for South West Coast Roma Britnell has described the limitations placed on VLine group bookings for school groups as “ludicrous”.

Ms Britnell said the government was disadvantaging school groups by refusing to allow bookings of more than 30 students on the Warrnambool VLine service for school trips to Melbourne.

“It’s ludicrous to expect schools to send 100 students to Melbourne on four different regional train services and still coordinate their excursions,” she said.

“The last students will be arriving nearly a full day later than the students on the first service.”

The WarrnamboolWeekly is a member of the Regional Media Connect.

WarrnamboolWeekly is published and printed on-site by Western District Newspapers Pty. Ltd. 124-126 Manifold Street, Camperdown. Victoria 3260

ACN 004 068 759

Ms Britnell shared the frustrations of south west coast schools who have contacted her office, unable to book

more than 30 students onto a single VLine service. As a result, they are left having to hire coaches, resulting in thousands of dollars in increased costs to families.

“I understand that the 100-day booking window provides uncertainty to travellers wishing to plan their trips in advance, which is a particularly concerning issue for local residents attending specialist medical appointments.”

Ms Britnell said booking a school group on VLine should be an easy action, not something prevented by red tape.

“We need immediate action from the Minister for Public Transport to use common sense and remove this department red tape, giving regional Victorian students the opportunity to take the train for their school amp in Melbourne, or for community members to attend a specialist medical appointment in the city,” she said.

No gallery for Cannon Hill gallery Cannon

THE much publicised public campaign to save Cannon Hill from construction of a new art gallery has been successful.

At a meeting earlier this week, Warrnambool City Council voted not to pursue the area as a possible site for a new gallery building.

The decision follows the completion of a business case which found the cost of constructing and maintaining a gallery building at Cannon Hill was excessive – up to $73 million - and would result in only a marginal return on investment.

“The value in having completed the business case is that we were in a position to make an evidence-based decision,” mayor Debbie Arnott said.

“We’ve endeavoured to reassure the community along the way that we would make a decision that

considered the outcome of the business case.

“In the current funding climate, the likelihood of receiving support from other levels of government, even in the medium to long-term, would have presented a considerable challenge.

“Council was also mindful of the public sentiment surrounding Cannon Hill. The challenge of having an art gallery building that meets industry standards and public expectations remains.”

Cr Arnott said council had chosen to allocate $65,000 to carry out a business case which examines the potential for a new art gallery at the existing site.

“As there was with the Cannon Hill business case, there will be parameters built into the study.

“A key one is that the Civic Green open space is retained, that it has an improved street presence and

an environmentally sustainable design.

“The business case is an early step in a journey towards a new gallery building and there will be opportunities for the community to have a say along the way to a final decision.”

Cr Arnott added a new gallery building was a longterm goal for the city but an important one.

“Our community has always valued fine arts and our gallery collection is also a strong visitor drawcard,” she said.

“We need to ensure we can care for and present our collection and exhibitions in a suitable gallery building and we’ll keep working towards offering an iconic regional art gallery that is also a visitor destination that delivers exemplary creative, cultural and education experiences.”

WORKING in the nursery at Worn Gundidj has given Dylan the opportunity to live a healthier lifestyle.

Previously caught up in a spiralling drug addiction, Dylan is one of several ‘success stories’ at the Warrnambool-based business.

“I had a pretty serious drug addiction about seven or eight years ago and went through a rehab program in Melbourne,” Dylan said.

“But I’m proud to say I’ve now been sober for more than 20 months and I’m really turning my life around.”

Dylan’s introduction to the nursery came about in February last year when he started doing some volunteer work.

This quickly turned into a part-time position and he hasn’t looked back since.

“I really enjoy working here (at the nursery); we have a great team and the customers are really nice,” he said.

“My favourite plant is the strawberry gum. I like the smell of the leaves when you rub your fingers on them and you can actually turn this into icecream which is delicious.”

Dylan and the team at Worn Gundidj Nursery in Rooneys Road are happy to chat with visitors who are keen to learn more about traditional bush tucker and the best uses for each plant in the nursery.

“We use local native seeds, which are sourced from diverse eco-systems, to propagate our hardy plant range,” Dylan said.

The nursery is open from 9am-4.30pm weekdays. Phone 5561 5315 for more information or to place your order.

Additional space for creativity

A $110,000 extension to Warrnambool’s Goodwin Hall has allowed for greater storage room and creativity for two of the city’s popular theatre companies.

The extension has enabled both the Warrnambool Theatre Company and Holiday Actors to utilise additional space to create award-winning sets and store a wide range of costumes, props and equipment.

The extension to the building, located at Friendly Societies Park, was funded through Warrnambool City Council’s small infrastructure fund.

The 9x20 metre extension has allowed Holiday Actors, who previously stored items at a site in Dennington, to cohabitate the space.

With running water connected to the hall, set painting and cleanup is now an easier task for both groups.

Holiday Actors and Warrnambool Theatre Company have been working increasingly closely in recent years, with their first joint production of ‘Les Miserables’ staged in 2019, followed by ‘Cats’ and ‘Shrek’, with ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to take centre stage next month.

Warrnambool Theatre Company president and The Wizard of Oz producer, Ailiche Goddard-Clegg, said she was proud of the theatre partnership model in Warrnambool.

“In Warrnambool we have Primary Performers for primary school aged children, Holiday Actors for adolescents up to 21 and then Warrnambool Theatre Company for all ages,” she said.

“We see theatre as a theatre pipeline in Warrnambool and this infrastructure really supports all of those theatre companies to make great theatre.

“I want to thank Warrnambool City Council for its support through the small infrastructure fund for this extension of Goodwin Hall.”

Ms Goddard-Clegg also thanked the council for its recent support (through the community development fund) of the upcoming Wizard of Oz production, which will take to the stage of the Lighthouse Theatre between July 15-22.

“We thank the councillors and especially the recreation and culture team for shepherding this project for us and for giving us a lot of support,” Ms Goddard-Clegg said.

Holiday Actors treasurer Lyle Russell agreed that both companies working in tandem made sense.

“The idea is to get a big enough space for both companies to fit in under this roof and share the space,” she said.

“It was to try and create enough space so that we could build a set that would fit on an 8x8 stage, but then also have room to store all of the machinery, equipment and other pieces of set, props and costumes.

“It enables us to have everything we need for a show under one roof.”

Warrnambool deputy mayor Cr Max Taylor said the small infrastructure fund was all about helping community groups continue their good work in enhancing the social fabric of Warrnambool.

“It’s great to be able to provide these funds to assist the Warrnambool Theatre Company and the Holiday Actors to come together and share this space,” he said.

“Both groups are an important part of Warrnambool and we are happy to help so many community members getting involved in theatre.”

Tickets for The Wizard of Oz are on sale now and can be purchased at www.lighthousetheatre.com.au or the Lighthouse Theatre box office.

Don’t miss the Dash

THE Port Fairy Winter Weekends series kicks off this long weekend, with a host of activities and events planned.

The winter weekends program is a celebration of the town’s history, culture and community over a series of weekends throughout June and July.

Port Fairy is known for its wintery crisp mornings, beautiful downpours and moody weather during the winter months, and this festival is here to embrace it.

Traditionally spanning four weekends, with a fresh approach in 2023 it will cover three weekends to allow for a bigger impact.

The festival will have visitors eating, drinking, creating, making and dancing their way through this weekend.

No doubt the much talked about dachshund dash will be one of the highlights of this weekend’s program, with our short-legged friends battling it out for the biggest crown on the competitive small dog circuit – so make sure you’re at the football oval at 2pm on Saturday to watch all the action.

Immerse yourself in the thrill of 100 canines dashing, leaping or sniffing their way to the finish line.

Cheer the scurrying runners – most with more heart than sense of direction –as they race to win the title of top dog.

With an organising committee consisting of faces old and new, all bringing with them a renewed approach and new vision, this festival is bringing the winter heat and celebrating all that is spectacular in this small part of the world that packs a big punch.

Festival coordinator Ali Kavanagh is leading the charge and is excited to see

the events unfold this weekend.

“Port Fairy Winter Weekends has been a stalwart in the festival calendar in the region for many years,” she said.

“I’m so proud to be part of this strong team where, collectively, we work towards highlighting every inch of what makes this part of the world so rare and beautiful.”

An exciting new addition to this year’s festival is the ‘Winter Hub.’

Nestled between Luone Jewellery and Railway Place on Bank Street is an open green space that will play host as the central festival arena.

A big-top tent will take centre-stage and house epic musical events, drinks and get-togethers over the course of the festival weekends.

This weekend is jam-packed full of entertainment, colour and activities for all ages, kicking off with a festival opening party between 6pm and 10.30pm at various venues across the town.

Visitors can embrace the winter weather with friends, family, warm drinks, street food and music from local DJ Naomy and other special guests.

Gunditjmara-Maar Nations traditional owners will hold a smoking ceremony and welcome to country before visitors can stroll down to the Moyne for a riverside of colour and light.

Throughout the weekend, the port buildings and surrounding grounds will be transformed in a vivid play of colour, shadow and light.

For a gold coin entry, visitors can browse the ‘Queen Consort Market at Littlebank’ (51 Sackville Street) each day between 10am and 4pm. There you will find a treasure trove of goodies including furniture, soft furnishings, lighting, re-spin sound systems, Prehistoric Sound records, tarot reading, fresh cut flowers and much more.

Lost and Lonesome are excited to warm up this winter and celebrate with a stacked line-up of talent between 4.30pm and 10pm on Saturday June 10 (venue to be confirmed).

One of the region’s most loved annual markets, MADE, will run from 9am-2pm on Saturday at St John’s Church Hall in Barclay Street.

There you will find a mix of handmade art, craft and design from established and emerging makers, while a Young Makers market will be held at the Port Fairy Sea Scout Hall in Bank Street.

Children between the ages of eight and 18 years can laugh their way through an acro yoga session from 10am-11am on Saturday, June 10.

The session will start with personal, partner and group challenges involving balance, strength and focus, before things slow down for a quiet and still final relaxation.

Ghost tours are back for those who love a spooky good time (not recommended for children). Visit the graves of the historical people featured in the Port Fairy Ghost Stories book.

The tour will start at 4pm on the Saturday of the long weekend and will cost $15 per person (no bookings required just turn up at the cemetery gates).

Capping off a great day, head to the Lecture Hall in Sackville Street on Saturday June 10 for an evening of music to officially launch the 2024 Port Fairy Folk Festival. Following on from this weekend’s activities, the remaining two ‘winter weekends’ will be held on Friday, June 23-Sunday, June 25, and Friday, July 7-Sunday July 9. 7-Sunday July 9.

Spotlight on Port Fairy

Discover Port Fairy on foot

PORT Fairy’s rich and intriguing history can be discovered on foot through either a selfguided or guided walking tour of the town.

Whether you are a resident who walks down the main street every day, or a visitor to the town, you may be amazed at the background and history of this quaint little village.

The Port Fairy Heritage Trail has been established to allow people the opportunity to explore the town’s bountiful 19th-century buildings including small cottages, extensive homes and public constructions - many of which are listed by the National Trust of Victoria.

Port Fairy’s rich historical and heritage background, together with its oceanic development, was highlighted when Port Fairy was internationallyrecognised in 2012 as ‘The World’s Most Liveable Town.’

For those interested in learning about the oceanic history of Port Fairy, The Maritime and Shipwreck Heritage Walk will take participants on a tour of the sights that took place at the King George Square on March 30, 1888. Such sights include the arrival of the Warrnambool detachment of the Volunteer Militia and the launch of a lifeboat.

At that time, the wharf was busily preparing for the arrival of passengers and cargo from Melbourne via steamers, Casino and Dawn.

The maritime walk not only takes in views of these sights, but also explains their contribution to community life and relevance to Port Fairy as it’s known today.

The walk also incorporates a visit to the various shipwreck locations along the bay, taking in the sites of the Essington, Thistle, Lydia, Socrates, Eliza and Sara Louisa.

Port Fairy’s shipwrecks total 17, most of which are the result of strong southeasterly winds which caused the ships to drag their anchors, driving them ashore to East Beach.

Port Fairy’s origins date back to 1843 when an Irishman, James Atkinson, bought 20 square kilometres in Victoria and named this settlement ‘Belfast’.

In 1887, following a plebiscite, the people of the town voted to change its name to Port Fairy, after the cutter ‘Fairy’ which entered the bay during a sealing expedition in 1828.

Interestingly Port Fairy’s economic survival is, in part, due to the attraction of its heritage listed buildings (mostly built before World War One).

The railway link was established in 1890 and also contributed to economic growth, allowing the town to become less dependent on shipping services for its economic survival, which was based on fishing and dairying.

The town went through a period of economic depression following World War Two, however visitors continued to flock to the town, gradually bringing it back to being the vibrant, bustling community it is today.

For self-guided walking maps or information on the guided walking tours contact the visitor information centre on 5568 2682 or email vic@ moyne.vic.gov.au.

Green thumbs return

THE COVID-19 pandemic has led to an unexpected upswing of interest in horticultural courses around Warrnambool.

South West TAFE is experiencing unprecedented demand for its Certificate II and III horticulture courses and is about to start a new Certificate II course.

It has also reintroduced horticulture in Portland after a 15-year absence and is planning a new course in Hamilton.

South West TAFE horticulture teacher Michelle Parker said that during the COVID-19 lockdowns, many people revived their love of gardening.

“People weren’t allowed to go anywhere and so many turned to gardening,” Ms Parker said.

“It seems spending more time at home during the pandemic rekindled people’s love of the garden.

“There has been more interest in both courses since the pandemic. We also have apprentices from all over the western district doing the course in Warrnambool.”

South West TAFE is currently running both Certificate II and III courses in Warrnambool and has opened a midyear intake for the Certificate II course.

An information session was held on June 6 but potential students can still apply for a July-August intake, which will depend on numbers.

“We have been quite full for the past

couple of years, so there is a lot of demand,” Ms Parker said.

The Certificate II is aimed at people who may not have gardening experience but are keen to explore or avid gardeners who want to know more about plants.

“It’s quite broad and gives a really good overview of the plant world,” Ms Parker said.

The course covers identifying plant

species, botanic names, propagation, pruning and gardening and practical tasks like the basics of irrigation, soils, pests and diseases.

The Certificate III is a trade qualification that runs one day a week over two years.

It has a commercial focus and is aimed at people already working in the industry who want a formal qualification and those who want a

career in the industry.

“There are usually some students who complete the Certificate II who want to continue on to the Certificate III,” Mr Parker said.

“The Certificate II gives them a good foundation of knowledge.”

People interested in the Certificate II horticulture course can contact the Warrnambool campus or visit www. swtafe.edu.au.

Ice bath and donuts

ICE baths, a dunking machine and tasty donuts have resulted in a whole lot of fun – and a whole lot of cash raised for the ‘Fight MND’ charity.

Last Monday’s Big Freeze event at Brauer College was the brainchild of the school’s VEC Vocational Major (previously called VCAL) students who worked alongside students from the Merri River School.

Tin rattling, online donations, raffles and the Merri River ‘Delicious Doughnuts’ saw the project raise more than $2,500.

The year 11 Vocational Major (VM) students were responsible for designing, planning, running and evaluating a community event.

Earlier this year the group began researching people who had made a positive impact on the world and all were impressed by the ongoing efforts of MND sufferer, Neale Daniher.

“One student suggested we hold a Big Freeze event and that was very quickly adopted,” VM team leader at Brauer College Katie White said.

“What was originally a small in-house project quickly snowballed after talks with Di at the Junction Hotel (who held an event the previous day) and the South West Big Freeze. Suddenly we had official robes, donation posters and the event was locked in.”

Students also took control of seeking potential sponsors and were overwhelmed with the generosity shown – which resulted in the purchase of a dunking machine, ice bath and more than 50 bags of ice.

“It was wonderful to see Brauer College and the year 12 Merri River students working together on this event,” Katie said.

“During Monday’s event 300 blue donuts were sold in under 15 minutes and we had 14 staff and 13 students from across the two schools volunteer to get cold and wet.

“All the kids worked tirelessly to collect donations and run the event while David Taylor was the MC. While staff were dunked in the tank the students sat in the ice bath while others poured buckets full of water (and ice) over their heads.”

With the event hailed a huge success, plans are already in place for the Brauer College and Merri River Big Freeze to become a permanent fixture on the two schools’ calendars.

Winter safety warning for boaters

LIFE Saving Victoria (LSV) has this week issued an urgent reminder, warning boaters and fishers of their risk of drowning during the month of June.

Records taken over the past 20 years show that one in five fatal drownings during June have involved people fishing or boating.

Victorians’ drowning risk increases further on the King’s Birthday long weekend, with Victorians 68 per cent more likely to drown on a public holiday than any other day of the year.

LSV manager research and evaluation Dr Hannah Calverley said the colder weather should not stop water safety being front of mind for those spending time in, on or around water this winter.

“With winter getting underway, your risk of death by drowning may be the last thing on your mind, especially if you are fishing or boating and don’t plan on entering the water, however, you can never relax when it comes to water safety,” Dr Calverley said.

“Unintentional entry was a factor in 41 per cent of fatal drownings in the past decade and concerningly, in about four in five boating related drowning deaths during this time, the victims were not wearing a lifejacket, or their lifejacket was illfitting or incorrect for the activity or conditions.

“This is why lifejackets are a non-negotiable piece of safety equipment for anyone boating or fishing, to buy you time to survive should you end up in the water.”

Dr Calerley said while motorists wouldn’t hesitate to put on a seatbelt when getting in the car, boaters should think of wearing a lifejacket while on the boat as being equally important.

“Suddenly entering cold water can be life threatening, with the risk of boaters experiencing cold shock and hypothermia,” Mr Johnson said.

“You need to be able to get back on your boat or paddlecraft quickly or be able to call for help straight away.

“Know the three - remember to always wear a lifejacket, carry two waterproof communication devices and know the weather before and during your trip.”

Tragically, since July 1, 2022, 52 people have drowned in Victorian waters.

This is 11 more than the 10-year average and of the 52 fatal drowning incidents, 66 per cent occurred in inland or coastal waterways, and 34 per cent were around the home or within other bodies of water

Learning ‘hand in hand’

ALLANSFORD primary students have embraced this year’s Reconciliation Week theme of ‘Be a Voice for Generations.’

The students celebrated the week – which ran from May 27 to June 3 – with a range of activities.

They explored, conversed, discussed, experienced and created many different

learning tasks both inside the classroom and out in the playground.

Painting and playing didgeridoos, dot painting and various art projects were all part of the week’s activities.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements – and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Festival launch tonight

TONIGHT sees the launch of the third annual Warrnambool Storytelling Festival at the Lighthouse Theatre.

Starting at 7.30pm, this year’s festival will run until July 2 and will feature the return of a number of favourite storytellers and storytelling events previously featured – along with the introduction of some new ones.

Tonight’s launch will feature Lynny M. and music from South African production ‘Die Waarheid oor Duiwe’ (The Truth About Doves).

“The festival aims to explore storytelling of all types through various art forms and cultural and community groups,” chair of the festival Philip Liebelt said.

“There are historical, cultural, very personal, fictional, written, musical and artistic stories.

“A Human Library event will allow us to hear the stories of people who have experienced mental health issues, while overseas Deakin University students will tell the story of coming to Warrnambool. There will also be some moving stories from First Nations people, Uncle Robbie Lowe and Yaraan Couzens Bundle.”

With more than 30 events spread out over three weeks, including children’s activities during the school holidays, the festival will end with an open mike event.

Tickets for tonight’s launch can be purchased at the door. For more information on the festival head to www. warnamboolstorytelling.com.au.

Unwelcome phone calls

UNWELCOME phone calls from businesses claiming to provide services on behalf of the Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program continue to rise across the district.

Member for South West Coast, Roma Britnell, has urged residents to be aware of their rights in respect of the unwelcome calls.

Late last week Ms Britnell said her office had been inundated with complaints from residents who have reportedly been “bombarded” by sales calls spruiking VEU offers such as window and door frame seals, bathroom fan covers and low flow shower heads to name a few.

“People are telling me they are getting anywhere from 10 to 50 calls a day and some residents are telling me that the callers are presenting as pushy and even rude,” Ms Britnell said.

“We have also received reports that some have been

misleadingly representing themselves as being from the Victorian government.”

Ms Britnell said while those service provides must be accredited by the Victorian government, this misrepresentation “from the government” was causing confusion among more vulnerable community members who were feeling obliged to listen or act on what was a voluntary program.

“Callers must not use high pressure or deceptive tactics and when a household advises they wish to end the conversation or request to be taken off a call list, these callers are required to oblige under the VEU Code of Conduct,” Ms Britnell said.

She has now made representation to the Victorian Government, asking that the Minister take action and ensure that her accredited providers be reminded of their obligations under the Code of Conduct and that strong actions be taken against any companies reported for breaching the Code.

Reconciliation Week celebrated

WARRNAMBOOL West Primary School students have acknowledged National Reconciliation Week in a respectful and colourful way.

Throughout the week the school’s Koorie leaders spoke to each individual class and watched a ‘Story Time’ link with them on the big screen.

Classes read books including ‘Sorry Day,’ Somebody’s Land’ and Finding our heart.’

During their visual arts lesson, each child used three different colours to paint traditional dot paintings and symbols for a whole school display.

A rainbow serpent was the main feature of the collaborative piece while a Sea of Hearts challenge was also completed, with each child writing on a heart what reconciliation means to them.

Everything about bees and their environment BUZZ the B U Z Z

Do honey bees need feeding in winter?

when feed is less available. It can make the difference between a hive surviving or not.

This is a question I am asked a lot as a beekeeper, and the answer is: it depends.

There is a mindset amongst many beekeepers that we live in a sunny, mild country, and the bees must be happy to buzz around all year long collecting nectar and making honey, and have enough to survive a winter on their own, without the beekeeper’s intervention in things. This couldn’t be further from the truth! In keeping bees, like any animal (and other livestock like sheep, cattle) they have a need to have access to adequate food in their surroundings, or be supplemented with feed by their owner (the beekeeper) in the case that food supplies aren’t available. Feeding bees is like feeding hay to sheep, or topping up cattle rations with silage

Think of sheep in a paddock. If there are too many sheep for the size of the paddock, or if it’s a dry year and the grass doesn’t grow fast enough, those sheep will not have enough feed per head. It’s called ‘carrying capacity’, and is a concrete rule for any living thing surviving in its environment. Even for humans! If bees, or even us, have forage (or food) needs greater than the local (or wider) environment can provide, then there will be a food deficit.

Bees will store as much food as they have access to, in the time that they have available, within whatever space is free in the hive. If one of these variables falls short, then there may not be enough honey stored for their needs, never mind a surplus for the beekeeper to harvest. If this happens, there is a risk of a hive starving, and I, the beekeeper, need to act to prevent this happening.

Any time that bees are short of stores, it’s time to feed them. There may be insufficient nectarand/or pollen-bearing flowers, not enough good days to forage and a rapidly diminishing surplus in the hive.

If the hive feels particularly light when I heft it, or I notice it dropping weight quite quickly, it’s time to intervene and feed my bees. Beekeepers usually feed some kind of sugar syrup, sometimes dry white sugar, or fondant. It is illegal to feed honey to bees due to biosecurity risks, unless it is from the same hive, and never to be offered out in the open.

Australia New Zealand Food Standards CodeStandard 2.8.2 – Honey. If I am feeding bees, it is in the early parts of Winter, and sometimes in early Spring, and the bees rapidly consume what I feed them, and is prior to adding any honey boxes to the hives.

Australian winters aren’t usually this severe, but bees need stores to survive periods of cold weather.

What about sugar in honey? Sugar remaining in combs must not be extracted with the next honey crop. The sugar will contaminate the honey and the extracted product will not conform to the legal standards set out in the

Bees will fly on days in Winter with sunshine and no wind.

So, if you see a few bees out and about on Winter’s days gathering nectar and pollen for the hive, know that every little bit the bees can add to their stores is a bonus in cold weather, and the more winter flowering plants you have in your garden, the better!

Keep on buzzing.

Hockey action from Albert Park

ROUND six of Hockey South West saw some great junior action in Warrnambool last weekend.

As the autumn competition starts to wind down, with finals to be held next weekend (June 16-17), there was some great displays of team-work and skill on the fields. Headbands were out in force last weekend to remember and pay tribute to the wonderful contribution Annie Anderson made in communities across Victoria and South Australia.

Sadly, Annie passed away at the end of last year but her legacy continues to “burn strong”.

A reminder to all players that the new winter competition will start in July and run through until September, with

Eagles soar at Koroit

IN a low-scoring game at Victoria Park last weekend, North Warrnambool celebrated victory over the seventh-placed Koroit Saints.

The win sees North hold on to fourth on the Hampden League ladder, half a game clear of fifth-placed Cobden and just percentage behind Camperdown in third.

Last Saturday’s round eight game at Victoria Park got off to a relatively slow start, with Koroit kicking just one goal five in the first half while North went in to the main break with 3.3 on the board.

Both sides made better use of the ball in their forward 50 in the third term, with the Saints adding three majors while the Eagles added one goal, one. A final term surge from the visitors saw the Eagles finish 19-points ahead

on the board, 8.7.55 to Koroit 5.6.36.

Best for North were Luke Wines, Jack Johnstone, Luke Kenna, Thomas Batten, Adam Wines and Jye O’Brien while for Koroit, Mac Petersen, James Gow, Dallas Mooney, Paddy O’Sullivan, Thomas Baulch and Will Petersen were named best.

Thomas Batten and Adam Wines kicked two each for North, supported by Duke and Jarvis Bermingham, Bailey Jenkinson and Nick Rodda.

Goal kickers for the Saints were Paddy O’Sulivan (2), Jack Block, William Couch and Frazer Robb.

In other Hampden League games last weekend, the South Warrnambool Roosters were big winners over Portland, Terang Mortlake enjoyed a 68-point win over the Kangaroos, Port Fairy defeated Camperdown and Cobden were 52-point victors over the Blues.

Merrivale remains undefeated

MERRIVALE continues to dominate the Warrnambool and District football league.

The Tigers, sitting undefeated on top of the table, were comfortable 94-point victors over the fifth-placed Russells Creek last weekend.

After just three points separated the two sides at the end of the first quarter, the Tigers made good use of the ball in the second and went into the main break with a handy 18-point lead.

Restricting Russells Creek’s scoring opportunities to just one behind in the second half, the Tigers went on to add a further 12 majors to the board to come home victors by 94-points.

Final scores were Merrivale 19.14.128 to Russells Creek 5.4.34

Best players for the Tigers were Eli Barker, Jayden Brooks, Manny Sandow, Tyler Stephens, Billy Hanocks and Matt Hausler while for Russells Creek, Dylan Burns, Logan McLeod, Troy Lovett,

Taylem Wason, Seamus Brady and Jyah Chatfield were maned best.

Dylan Weir booted five for the Tigers, while Jayden Brooks added four, Manny Sandow (3) and one each from Sam Bleeson, Billy Hancocks, Jack Neave, Jalen Porten, Tate Porter, Colby Rix and JyeWilson.

Goal kickers for Russells Creek were Tyran Boyle, Patrick Brady, Seamus Brady, Kyle Ryan and Thomas Smith.

In other Warrnambool District games last weekend, Dennington were seven point winners over South Rovers, Panmure defeated Timboon, Nirranda were big winners over Old Collegians and Kolora Noorat defeated Allansford by 71 points.

Round 10 (tomorrow) will see Timboon host Dennington, Russells Creek take on South Rovers, Kolora Noorat will host Merrivale, Old Collegians will take on Allansford and Nirranda will travel to Panmure to face the Bulldogs.

Orford table tennis

THIS week marks the start of the second reverse round of matches for Orford and District Table Tennis Association.

Warrnambool Vikings remain undefeated.

Player availability will determine the remaining ladder positions, with the start of the winter bringing with it the cold season.

This week’s weather marked what could be the start of difficult playing conditions - cold, power loss, high winds and noisy.

Ladder movement this week saw Port Fairy jump over Myndarra when they defeated them, either team finishing in fifth place will be too strong for those below.

Week eight will see Glengleeson v Warrnambool Vikings.

Warrnambool Vikings will account for Glengleeson as they did in this year’s opening night.

Warrnambool Warriors v Orford Orford haven’t the fire power to counter Warrnambool Warriors, they can only hope to lose by less, with Russell Hussey Orford

to influence the doubles.

Myndarra v Tarrone Myndarra won last round and it is believed they will again.

Attunga v Port Fairy. The Attunga family team will be too strong for Port Fairy who have been a surprise entry this year.

Results from week seven were as follows:

Warrnambool Vikings defeated Orford 10.30-1.4.

It was a wet, miserable trip back to Orford and that wasn’t just because of the weather.

Russell Hussey was Orford’s winner when he defeated Chad 11-2, 11-5 and 11-9; extended rubbers were few and game scores regulation.

Warrnambool Vikings’ Dom and Tess were the three rubber winners for the night.

Warrnambool Warriors defeated Tarrone 10.30-1.12.

Warrnambool Warriors were able to win all of the six extended rubbers of the night; the score sheet showing that play wasn’t as one sided as the outcome.

David Warhurst was Tarrone’s winner, while Neil Ford and Peter Owen won their three rubbers for

Warrnambool Warriors, both holding out strong challenges to win their rubbers in five games, one of which was 15-13.

Myndarra lost to Port Fairy 0.0-11.33.

With Myndarra’s Nick Bartlett their only regular player, Port Fairy was too strong.

Glengleeson lost to Attunga 1.7-10.30.

Glengleeson’s Bill Lyon was their shining light when he defeated Andrea Drendel who was filling-in for Attunga.

Both Kelly and Val Wortley won their three rubbers for Attunga.

Kelly was fortunate to defeat Bill 11-2, 11-7 and 16-14, the rubber an indication of others that had a number of extended games.

The un-official ladder is as follows: Warrnambool Vikings 28 points, 66 rubbers and 205 games; Attunga 24, 53, 172; Warrnambool Warriors 20, 51, 168; Port Fairy 16, 35, 119; Myndarra 12, 30, 99; Orford 8, 31, 109; Glengleeson 4, 23, 90; Tarrone 0, 19, 81.
