Visitor numbers increase

VISITORS flocked to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village over the long weekend.

According to records, the village has posted strong June long weekend visitor numbers – up on both last year’s figures and those of 2019.

From last Saturday, June 10, to Monday June 12, 764 people visited the village throughout the daytime opening hours while 224 attended the sound and light show.

This compares to 2022 June long weekend numbers of 709 and 191, (up 10 per cent in 2023).

In the pre-COVID year of 2019 there were 658 day time and 255 night time entries (up eight per cent in 2023).

Warrnambool mayor Debbie Arnott said Flagstaff Hill was a popular yearround attraction.

“While the weather over the long weekend was generally quite good, as a city where many of the most popular things to see and do are outside, Flagstaff Hill is an important attraction because it provides a high-quality, allweather option,” she said.

“Summer, winter, autumn, spring –visitors continue to be attracted to a day, or a night, at Flagstaff Hill.

“We’ve seen glimpses of whales over the past couple of weeks, and hopefully we are in for a bumper whale season that coincides with the school holidays to further boost our visitor economy.”

Your Tech Solutions

Cr Arnott also encouraged everyone to vote for Warrnambool in the Top Tourism Town Awards.

“I think part of being a truly great tourist town is to be a year-round attraction,” she said.

“We are definitely an incredibly popular summer destination, and the whales can be a winter drawcard, but when you add experiences like Flagstaff Hill that can be enjoyed year-round, as well as the great walking trails, Lake Pertobe, dining,

shopping, we really are an outstanding destination at any time of the year.”

Judges have named Warrnambool as one of eight finalists in the 10,000+ population category of the Victorian Top Tourism Town Awards, and a public vote will help to determine the winner.

It only takes two minutes to vote, and you could win a prize, visit www. vtic.com.au/toptourismtown2023 by June 22.

The winners of the Top Tourism Town Awards will be announced on July 26

Night inspections of unsealed roads

NIGHT inspections of council roads across Moyne Shire are now underway.

Staff will cover every kilometre of unsealed roads over the coming weeks to ensure road signs are in place, are clearly visible with full reflectivity and are not obscured by vegetation.

Night inspections are carried out annually and are alternated between sealed and unsealed roads each year.

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Karen Foster said crews would drive every kilometre of the unsealed road network over the coming weeks.

“Around 1,000 kilometres of road will be driven which takes around five to six weeks,” she said.

“It’s an important part of our road management

plan to ensure all signage in place meets Australian safety standards.”

The night works will be on top of council’s regular inspections across the almost 3,000 kilometres of local road network (looking at surface conditions) which helps inform the maintenance and rehabilitation program team.

“We know roads are a key issue for our community and we are making a concerted effort to improve the local road network we control – with more than $14 million of works planned in the draft budget.”

Council has also commenced its unsealed road maintenance grading program, with crews following a programmed schedule as they work their way around the shire.

Pride in your health

A HEALTHIER future for LGBTIQA+ communities will be the centre of a conference in Warrnambool later this month.

To be held on June 21, the conference has been designed to uplift, educate and advocate for a healthier future.

The ‘Pride in Your Health: LGBTIQA+ Diversity and Inclusion’ conference will be held at Deakin University’s Warrnambool campus to celebrate diversity and address the unique health challenges faced by the rainbow communities.

It will feature a series of workshops, a panel session and presenters who will offer attendees guidance to improve their access to the health system.

WRAD Health, in partnership with local organisations, will deliver the conference to highlight issues of access to healthcare for members of the LGBTIQA+ communities. Current research will be presented around the physical, psychological and substance use issues that impact these communities.

The conference will also aim to increase practitioner knowledge of and connect inclusive groups/services in the area and to encourage action to reduce barriers for these communities.

WRAD health operations manager Mark Powell said both members and allies of the vibrant LGBTIQA+ communities were invited to join an empowering and inclusive event for health professionals from noon on June 21.

The Pride in Your Health committee is committed to providing a safe and supportive space where individuals and agencies can gather to explore critical health topics affecting LGBTIQA+ communities.

Mr Powell said the event would feature an engaging line-up of local and renowned experts, healthcare professionals and community leaders to delve into the issues.

“Let’s work together to tackle the challenges on health issues for these communities,” Mr Powell said. Sessions will cover lived and living experiences in navigating the health system, specific issues for the

youth of south-west Victoria, mental health impacts, becoming Rainbow Tick accredited and facing the issues of discrimination in healthcare and more.

“Through our workshops and panel session, we hope to create active participation and open dialogue, and we want engaging and thought-provoking discussion and interaction,” Mr Powell said.

“The range of presenters will offer a wealth of information and offer attendees opportunities for questions and guidance to improve the health system.”

It is hoped attendees will walk away with increased knowledge along with connections with like-minded people and services.

“We hope this will be a transformative event that will impact lives and drive positive change and that together we can pave the way to a healthier and more inclusive future for all.”

Tickets for the conference can be booked on www. eventbrite.com.au/e/pride-in-your-health-conferencetickets-620340955497.

A seat with a view

WHEN it comes to her favourite plant, Emily can’t go past the cushion bush.

As its name suggests, this tough shrub makes the perfect seat when fully grown.

“There’s something very interesting about the cushion bush,” Emily said.

“It’s the perfect shrub for difficult areas, and it brings interest to any garden with its textural growth habit.”

With silvery grey stems and tiny leaves, this bush is great for coastal sites such as Warrnambool as it resists both wind and salt spray.

“This is a great, low maintenance plant which is also drought resistant,” Emily said.

“And when it’s fully grown into a neat, bun-shaped plant, it can make a perfect seat which is always a bonus when you’re feeling abit tired out in the garden.”

Emily joined the team at Worn Gundidj Nursery shortly after moving back to Warrnambool from Geelong.

“Personal reasons saw me move back to be with family here (in Warrnambool) and my support worker at the time was also the CEO at Worn Gundidj,” Emily said.

“He suggested I give working at the nursery a go and I’m so glad I did because I’ve made some great friends here among the staff and have also met some lovely customers.

“It’s great to work outdoors and I’m very grateful for the opportunity. I’m learning a lot about not just plants but also customer service and I’ve completed by Certificate II in Horticulture which was very rewarding.”

Emily and the team at Worn Dundidj Nursery in Rooneys Road welcome customers between 9am and 4.30pm weekdays.

Recognition for Indigenous refl ection ection

Moyne Shire council’s Indigenous Reflection event on January 26 has been recognised at the National Awards for Local Government.

The event, ‘Ngootyoong Laka, Ngootyoong Yana’ (walking and talking with respect) received an honorable mention in the Indigenous recognition category at the annual awards presented in Canberra on Tuesday.

The reflection was planned with and led by Peek Whurrong Uncle Rob Lowe Senior and GunditjmaraKirrae Whurrong man Brett Clarke, with input from

A crowd of more than 300 people gathered at the Indigenous Massacres Memorial at Port Fairy’s Railway Place for a smoking ceremony, Welcome to Country and storytelling.

Mayor Karen Foster said the response following the event was overwhelmingly positive.

“It allowed Indigenous and non-Indigenous community members to come together to talk, listen, learn and share stories, language and culture,” she said.

“The ceremony started meaningful conversations and actions highlighting unified pathways forward within our shire.

“We are very proud of this recognition and of the collaborative approach we took to acknowledging and sharing local Indigenous stories as part of events to mark January 26.”

The National Awards for Local Government highlight initiatives implemented by local governments which are innovative, make a difference to their local communities, display excellence, and have outcomes that are replicable across the country.

Be biosecurity aware these school holidays

SCHOOL holiday-makers are being urged to help keep the state’s $17.5 billion agriculture industry safe from biosecurity threats including pests and diseases.

Agriculture Victoria’s executive director biosecurity Katherine Clift said there were many ways the community can be biosecurity aware, including complying with state regulations while travelling.

“Victorians travelling interstate should be aware of border quarantine restrictions around moving plants, fruit and vegetables or risk hefty fines,” she said.

“Biosecurity measures such as not bringing fruit and vegetables into the state will help protect Victoria’s valuable

horticulture industry from exotic pests including Mediterranean fruit fly.

“If you are planning to visit our excellent wineries, don’t wander into the vineyards in case you get phylloxera on your footwear and spread it elsewhere –this tiny insect can destroy grapevines and significantly impact our $170 million wine industry.”

Beach goers can minimise the risk of pests and diseases by following the steps of ‘Check, Clean and Dry’ –check all vessels, fishing, diving and surfing equipment and remove anything including water, sand and seaweed.

Also, remember to check your catch for signs of disease.

“Clean boats at home or at a

commercial carwash. Wash wetsuits, fishing and diving equipment with fresh, soapy water,” Dr Clift said.

“Dry all boating, fishing and diving equipment completely before heading out into the water again.”

For those making trips to farms, it’s essential to comply with biosecurity management plans and follow biosecurity signage requirements to help prevent spreading pests and disease.

“When you’re planning to visit a farming property, call ahead to see if there are any specific biosecurity requirements or potential issues,” Dr Clift said.

“When you arrive, sign the visitor record book, wash and disinfect your footwear and arrange to meet your

hosts at their house or on a sealed or gravel area away from livestock.”

Dr Clift also said when it was time to go home, farm visitors should wash their footwear again to avoid carrying pests and diseases to other properties or regions.

“If you’re spending a lot of time on farms – or travelling to multiple properties – our Come Clean, Stay Clean, Go Clean learning module has great tips to help build your biosecurity awareness.” she said.

“The short course will only take around 15 minutes of your time, but could save your friends and relatives so much more if you’re able to keep them safe from biosecurity threats.”

What’s the Voice referendum about? It’s about whether we should change the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia by setting up an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. A referendum is the only way to change the Australian Constitution. What is the Voice? The Voice would be a permanent body that gives independent advice to the Australian Parliament and Government on matters that affect First Nations people. The Voice aims to help the Parliament and Government to make better decisions and deliver better outcomes for First Nations people. How will the Voice be set up? How it’s set up would be determined after the referendum with input from First Nations people, the broader public and the Government. The Parliament would then make a law to set up the Voice. WW Port Fairy Winter Weekends

Dogs, markets and all things Port

WITH everything from fast-paced Dachshunds to markets, ghost tours and musical events, last weekend’s first in a series of ‘Winter Weekends’ has been hailed a huge success.

Port Fairy came alive over the three-day long weekend as crowds flocked to the town to enjoy a host of activities which celebrated the town’s vibrant history, culture and community.

The festival had visitors eating, drinking, creating and dancing their way through the weekend.

An estimated 2500 people gathered at the football oval on Saturday afternoon to watch the heats and finals of the much-anticipated Dachshund Dash.

Well over 100 dogs raced (or sniffed) their way to the finish line amid the cheer of owners and big crowds.

Festival co-ordinator Ali Kavanagh said the weekend exceeded expectations.

“It was an absolutely fantastic weekend, which really made all the hard work worth it,” she said.

“The Port Fairy Winter Weekends has been a stalwart in the festival calendar in the region for

many years and last weekend was a great start to this year’s program.”

While the four-legged friends raced across the oval, the Lions Club sold more than $800 in sausages while a nearby coffee van sold one coffee per minute throughout the afternoon’s event.

“The weekend was a huge success on so many levels,” Ms Kavanagh said.

“The town traders did very well, the men’s shed toy making event got through all 150 toy-make kits (and even had to give away their display models) and the Lions Club also sold out of 100 artworks raising $2000.”

Gunditjmara-Maar Nations traditional owners held a smoking ceremony and welcome to country before visitors strolled down to the Moyne for a riverside of colour and light.

Throughout the weekend, the port buildings and surrounding grounds were transformed in a vivid play of colour, shadow and light.

Following on from last weekend’s activities, the remaining two ‘winter weekends’ will be held on Friday, June 23-Sunday, June 25, and Friday, July 7-Sunday, July 9.

Gov can’t prevent May Noonan closure

THE Federal Government will support Lyndoch Living through the closure of May Noonan aged care facility, stating it “does not have legislated powers” to intervene and prevent the closure.

Western District Newspapers submitted a number of questions to the Federal Government surrounding its knowledge of Lyndoch Living’s financial woes, if Lyndoch Living had attempted to seek funding to support infrastructure upgrades to the facility which were highlighted as an impediment to the sale of the facility, why sufficient funding was not provided to ensure the future of the facility and if the government could act to save May Noonan from closure.

A federal government spokesperson said Lyndoch Living was within its obligations to shut down May Noonan and relocate residents.

“The Minister understands that the provider will assist residents to relocate from May Noonan to an aged care home of their choice, in line with its obligations under the Aged Care Act 1997 (the Act),” the spokesperson said.

“The Department of Health and Aged Care meets weekly with Lyndoch Living to support them to maintain continuity of care for residents, and to address

viability issues.”

The government spokesperson revealed Lyndoch Living had informed the government on May 24 of its plan to shut down May Noonan - seven days before informing residents, their families and the Terang community of the news.

“Lyndoch Living advised the department on May 24, 2023, of its Board’s decision to close May Noonan,” the spokesperson said.

“The department is providing regular updates to Minister for Aged Care (Anika) Wells on Lyndoch Living.”

In March this year Lyndoch Living acting chief executive officer Jill Davidson told Western District Newspapers that if a buyer could not be found for May Noonan, Lyndoch Living had a longterm vision of upgrading the facility.

The spokesperson said Lyndoch Living was being supported by a number of viability support programs, but did not specify if Lyndoch Living sought funding to support May Noonan’s long-term viability or infrastructure upgrades.

“The department is actively working to support Lyndoch Living as part of the Financial Monitoring and Business Assistance Program, to address and understand its financial and operational challenges,” the spokesperson said.

“As a provider in a regional location, from July 1, 2023, Lyndoch Living is

expected to receive an increase in Government Australian National Aged Care Classification (AN-ACC) funding and further support to meet the costs of 24/7 nursing.

“In September and October 2022 Lyndoch Living was awarded Business Improvement Fund (BIF) grants to improve infrastructure and operations.

“The BIF gives short-term grants to eligible aged care providers who are experiencing financial challenges.”

The spokesperson acknowledged the closure of May Noonan would be “distressing” for residents, their families and staff but maintained it had no authority to act.

“The government does not have legislated powers to step in and take over a residential aged care facility that is closing,” the spokesperson said.

“The decision to close the May Noonan facility is ultimately a decision for the Board of Lyndoch Living.

“The department has a range of measures in place to identify, monitor and respond to providers at risk of closure.

“In cases where viability support programs have been unable to prevent a closure, the government’s focus is on ensuring a safe and orderly closure and protecting the care and wellbeing of residents.”

Students lend a hand

SUPPLIES at the Warrnambool and District Food Share were given an extra boost recently thanks to local students.

As part of a community initiative between Hands on Learning, Volcano Produce and Food Share, students had the opportunity to get out in the field and help with harvesting last Friday.

Ben from Volcano Produce guided students from Warrnambool West and Koroit and District primary schools in how to harvest and prepare vegetables which, in turn, would be donated to Food Share.

Together, students from both schools harvested a large amount of cabbage and wombok.

Care was taken to remove leaves and load the harvest into vehicles for delivery.

Students from the program have also visited the Food Share premises to follow the journey from farm to plate, learning the important role Food Share plays in the local community.

They also learnt more about the program, including packing emergency food boxes for those in need.

Ben and the team at Volcano Produce proudly donate tons of harvest to Food Share.

Saints on the march

THE Koroit Saints continue to make their way up the Hampden League ladder, with their eyes firmly set on yet another premiership flag.

With the Hampden League season now at its half-way point, the Saints currently sit in fifth, percentage below fourth-placed Camperdown.

Having won seven consecutive flags since 2014 (with no finals played in the Covidinterrupted seasons of 2020 and 2021) the Saints sent a clear message to other clubs last weekend when they overcame one of the season’s biggest improvers, the second-placed Terang Mortlake Bloods.

While the Bloods got an early jump on the Saints in the first quarter, kicking 4.9 to 1.1, the Saints steadied in the second to add five majors and get within two points at the main break.

The third term saw both sides kick four goals before the Saints steadied in the last to clinch victory by just two points.

Final scores Koroit 14.12.96 to Terang Mortlake 13.16.94.

Best for the Saints were Paddy O’Sullivan, James Gow, Liam Hoy, Mitchell Lloyd, Mac Petersen and Clem Nagorcka. Nagorcka was efficient in front of goals, kicking three, while Matthew Bradley and

O’Sullivan booted two each.

Other contributors were Jack Block, Connor Byrne, William Couch, James Gow, Liam Hoy, Mitchell Lloyd and Jyron Neave. In other Hampden League games last weekend, Hamilton defeated Camperdown, South Warrnambool were 39-point winners over Cobden, North Warrnambool defeated the Blues and Port Fairy were big winners over Portland.

The Saints will host the Cobden Bombers tomorrow in a must-win game to stay in the five.

The Saints’ reserve side now sit a game clear of Terang Mortlake in fourth following last weekend’s 22-point win over the Bloods.

Final scores were Koroit 8.4.52 to the Bloods 4.6.30.

Best performers for the Saints were William Black, Kyle Moloney, Ben Harvey, Jarrod Korewha, Josh Purcell and Pat Keane.

Korewha booted three for the Saints, while Keane kicked two.

Other contributors to the board were William Black, Marcus Bunney and Kyle Moloney.

Tomorrow’s round 10 will see South play Port Fairy, the Blues host Portland, North Warrnambool will face Hamilton and Camperdown will host the Bloods.

No camping at Premier

PREMIER Speedway has this week announced it will be enforcing a strict ‘no camping’ policy from the start of the 2023/24 season.

Despite signs stating camping is not permitted on the grounds, there has been a rapid increase in the number of patrons camping in the car parks in recent years, particularly during the ‘Classic’.

More than 100 caravans and campers were set up between the Allansford and Warrnambool side car parks during this year’s Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic – a scene that organisers say will not be repeated.

A survey (undertaken after the 2023 Classic) highlighted the frustrations of many patrons over the amount of room caravans and campers took, limiting parking spaces on the Allansford side of the track.

The Premier Speedway board assembled a working group to investigate the various options available and recently met to discuss findings and, subsequently, decided

not to allow campers and caravans of any type into the grounds.

“While we understand some patrons may be inconvenienced with this decision, it has been made with the best interests in mind to ensure a safe environment for patrons and our volunteers,” Premier Speedway club president Richard Parkinson said.

“The events are run by a loyal group of volunteers whose focus must remain on executing successful events.”

Camping at Premier Speedway is against council’s Local Laws which state ‘no owner or occupier of private land may, without a permit, place or permit the placement of more than one caravan on that land for the purposes of providing accommodation.’

During recent discussions with the club, Warrnambool mayor Debbie Arnott said the council supported the decision by Premier Speedway to now allow camping on its site. The policy will become effectively immediately.

Sidney Bradshaw and Hamish Sinnott (Camperdown); Mark Marriott, Patrick Smith and Jordy Fowler (Cobden); Also included are Port Fairy’s Jett Hopper and Oscar Pollock; Toby Jennings and Sam Hampshire (Portland); Isaac Thomas, Ollie Bridgewater, Will

White, Jed Henderson and Archie Stevens (South Warrnambool); Rhys Buck, Ryley Hutchins, Darcy Hobbs and Kane Johnstone (Terang Mortlake); and Mitch Bidmade, Liam Bidmade, Harry Ryan, Ethan Boyd and Ryan Warfe (Warrnambool).

The other was a singles between Warriors’ Marshall Worthington and Jayden Clapp, 11-6, 11-13, 11-5 and

11-2.

Myndarra defeated Tarrone 8.24-3.11.

Aaron Rowbottom from Myndarra won his three rubbers, ably supported by his children in their rubbers and then combining to win both the doubles (which were the only extended rubbers for the night).
