Relay celebrates 21st year

WARRNAMBOOL sisters Jodie Carey and Emily Veale are hoping to see a large crowd at Deakin University for next month’s Relay for Life.

Celebrating survivors, remembering loved ones lost and fighting back against cancer, the annual Relay for Life is a fun experience that unites a community while raising funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services. To date, Warrnambool participants have already raised almost $29,000 towards this year’s $50,000 target. “We (the Warrnambool event) is now in its 21st year and we’re planning a big celebration at our relay on February 17,” Jodie said. “People can participate either on their own or in a team so we’re hoping local schools, clubs, teams and organisations will join us and help create awareness and funds.” Jodie, Emily and their family will be walking for their beloved mum who sadly lost her battle to cancer 11 years ago. “Our team name is Heather’s Heroes; our husbands, children, family and friends are always keen to walk which would make mum proud,” Emily said. The sisters and other volunteers are currently busy planning a full day/evening of celebrations, activities and events set to entertain participants and visitors. This will include kids’ activities, PhysiPole demonstrations, face painting, ball games, an on-site masseuse, coffee van and live entertainment.

Sisters Jodie Carey and Emily Veale are keen to hear from anyone who would like to join this year’s Relay for Life in Warrnambool next month. 2024D Participants are encouraged to take along a can of food that will be used to hold candles for the special candlelight ceremony later in the night. The tins will then be donated to Foodshare for distribution to needy families across the district.

“We will have a special opening lap for survivors and carers, as well as an afternoon tea for them, and at about 8pm we will stop walking and have the candlelight ceremony. “We’re expecting the walk to finish around 10pm when teams will gather for

Show n Shine attracts a crowd HUNDREDS of car enthusiasts headed to Port Fairy last weekend to take a close look at a range of vehicles.

Southcombe Park Oval was awash with colour and people of all ages on Sunday as large crowds gathered to enjoy South West Street Rodders’ Show ‘n Shine event. According to the group’s social coordinator Jack Arnel more than 400 cars were on display on Sunday. “We had a wonderful weekend,” Jack said. “We were really happy with the attendance; we had 150 entrants for the Port Fairy Rod Run and well over 800 people walked through the gates on Sunday. “We had lots of cars from South Australia, New South Wales and from across Victoria.” Along with the cars and motorbikes, there was also entertainment for children, rides and a live band. The annual event continues to draw great interest from across the district and organisers are already looking forward to next year’s 42nd event.

Small trains leave big impression

VISITORS to last weekend’s model train show in Warrnambool were impressed by the range and quality on display.

Held at St Joseph’s Primary School last weekend, the show attracted a steady stream of visitors across both days, with an estimated 1200 guests across the two days. The event was organised by members of the Warrnambool Model Railway Club. The club’s exhibition manager, Mick Lamb, said they were thrilled with the weekend. “We had 26 stands, which was a mixture of exhibits and traders, along with a replica of Puffing Billy on a trailer out the front which was also popular,” Mr Lamb said. Two awards were presented at the event – the McSween Brothers Award (in honour of the late Wayne and Kevin McSween) which was won by Chris Finney (Shinkansen Parade) and the Greg O’Flynn Award which went to Colin Konig (Slate Valley Tourist Railway). The Warrnambool Model Railway Club currently meets at the Merrivale Drive clubrooms every Tuesday from 7pm. All welcome.

All things vintage ORFORD will come alive this weekend for the running of the annual vintage rally.

When it comes to all things vintage, the rally has become renowned across the district and beyond for its interesting display of engines, tractors, trucks, cars, motorcycles, tools, machinery and collectables. According to organiser David Bartlett and his team of volunteers, this year’s event – to be staged tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday – looks set to once again be a crowd pleaser. “The Orford Vintage Rally has earned a reputation for its extensive exhibits and attractions,” David said. “We really do have something for everyone; whether

you’re interested in old tractors and machinery or beaut utes you’ll find it here.” An exciting addition this year will be blade shearing demonstrations and the opportunity for visitors to “have a go”. “There’s something about blade shearing that’s fascinating and people will have the chance at various times over the weekend to not only watch the experts in action but to also have a try themselves,” David said. A model boat pond has also been set up and will no doubt cause great interest, and members of the Hamilton Re-enactment Society will keep visitors entertained as they re-create the history, customs and fighting techniques of the Medieval period.

Last year the event attracted a crowd of more than 800 and organisers are hopeful to see just as many this weekend. “Like everything outdoors, the weather can play a large part in attendance so hopefully the conditions will be kind,” David said. “This setting is magnificent and many people comment on it while they’re here. It’s a beautiful, peaceful bush setting and the perfect location for a vintage rally.” A small entry fee is charged for adults (with those under 16 admitted free) and catering will be provided on-site. Due to limited internet reception in the area, the event is strictly cash only. Gates open around 9am both days.

February gardening WITH the days and weeks ticking by, now is the time to start thinking about what to do in your garden in February. Dig garden beds and fertilise in preparation for planting spring-flowering bulbs in the next few months. Keep summer colour coming from impatients and petunas with regular doses of liquid fertiliser and, later this month, pansies will start appearing in nurseries and can keep your display humming through autumn and into winter. Keep the water up to your tomatoes, especially those in dry areas, to encourage growth and protect against blossom-end rot (where the bottoms of tomatoes begin to rot). This is also the perfect time to clear out your gutters and get rid of any rubbish lying around your gardens, especially in country areas, to protect against bushfire. Lightly prune and fertilise repeat-flowering roses to encourage autumn flowering.

Help your fruit trees thrive

THERE is nothing nicer than enjoying the fruits of your labour – being able to pick and eat fresh fruit straight off the tree in your backyard.

It is recommended that when planting and growing your own fruit trees that you also develop a fruit tree ‘guild.’ A guild is an ancient technique where mutually beneficial species are planted around a fruit tree to create a thriving and supportive mini ecosystem. These guilds consist of several layers that can be made up of edible plants, climbing plants and shrubs that can coexist under and around the fruit tree. There are many benefits to planting a fruit tree guild. This includes maximising space in your garden to grow edibles; attracting pollinators and other insects; suppressing weeds and reducing root competition and improving the condition of your soil. Fruit guilds can also help to retain moisture in your soil, balance fungal populations, increase nutrient levels in soil and possibly even deter animals that may cause a problem to your trees. If you’re relatively new to the exciting and rewarding world of permaculture, a fruit tree guild is a great place to start. You can chose to have either a standalone fruit guild or link some together with fruit bushes and other trees to form a food forest in your own backyard. This is not only satisfying as you watch your guild (and fruit tree/s) grow, but can also help save money from the family budget. Here is a list of some of the plants that can be used to create a colourful and beneficial guild: Dill, fennel, lemon balm, yarrow, daffodils, chives, garlic, rhubarb, vetch, rye, strawberry, white clover, oregano, lavender and marigolds. There is no guaranteed, fool-proof recipe for a successful fruit tree guild; it’s all about finding the right combination of plants for your space and conditions.

Try to avoid over planting and causing an imbalance. Choose plants that serve multiple functions and seek help and advice from your local nursery staff. How you plant a fruit tree guild will depend on the space you have available. Choose a tree that works well both in terms of size and climate. Be patient. Some fruit trees may take four or five years to produce fruit but they are well worth waiting for and are a great investment. If you have a small garden, choose a dwarf fruit tree or small berry bush as the central part of your guild. A combination of trees works well as this

will prevent a single disease spreading easily between trees. To build the base of your fruit tree guild, lay cardboard in a circle around the base of your tree. This needs to be as large as the ‘rip line’ (where the outer-most leaves will come to when your tree reaches maturity). Add a layer of compost and soil at least five inches deep but keep it away from the trunk of the tree. Next, add a thick layer of mulch such as wood chip, and then plant a group of ‘companion plants’ that work together to support your tree. Along the ‘drip line’ you can plant

grass-supressing bulbs which will help to stop grass moving inside your guild and competing with your tree’s roots. Daffodils are a great option and also add colour. Alternatively, why not try onions, garlic or chives? Inside the drip line scatter a mix of plants that will soon be buzzing with bees and drawing nutrients from deep in the ground. Experiment with different mixes until you find something that works well for your space. As your fruit tree grows you can adapt your guild to meet its changing needs. PREMIER SPEEDWAY ~ GRAND ANNUAL SPRINTCAR CLASSIC

Impressive ‘track’ record PAUL Madden may not have sat behind the wheel of a Sprintcar at Premier Speedway, but his ‘track’ record is impressive. By his own calculations, Paul has been to “about 810” race meetings at Premier and in excess of 100 at other tracks all over the country and nearing a dozen in America. That in itself is no mean feat – but coupled with the fact that for more than four decades he has been Premier’s safety officer and he is a shining example of the dedication and commitment of the band of volunteers behind this popular club. “I started coming to Premier in 1970 at the old track at the racecourse; I’ve always been keen on motorsport and as a youngster I used to talk dad into taking me to the races,” he said. “As an 18/19 year-old I began racing standard and modified saloons. I did that for a few years but was I any good? Let’s just say I was a survivor.” When he stopped racing Paul’s enthusiasm for the sport remained and his focus soon turned to volunteering at Premier. “I remember having a chat with Ian Shepherd in town one day and he asked if I’d be keen to drive a push ute. I did that for about 10 years before I became the safety officer,” Paul said. “I was in my mid-30s at the time and I’m now 72 and still doing it – and still enjoy it just as much.” In his role at Premier, Paul finds himself overseeing the safety of volunteers in the infield. “It’s all about working as a team to ensure we all have a great night and we all stay safe on race day. “We’re fortunate here at Premier to have

community within one.” Having never missed a Classic in its now 51 year history, Paul doesn’t intend stopping anytime soon. “It (racing) just gets in your blood. There’s something about the Classic that continues to draw the crowds, the drivers and the teams behind it all; it’s like a big carnival.”

Charlie joined the club in 1958 and just five or six years later wife Jean joined him - and together the pair have enjoyed a long association with Premier, both on and off the race track. “I used to race Hot Rods and then Super Rods back in the early days,” Charlie recalled. “My first Classic, in 1973, was as a driver. I didn’t go all that well, I finished 12th, but it was a lot of fun and something I’ll always remember. We didn’t run on big budgets back then; we were running $7.50 tyres and if we had engine problems that was the end of the night for us.” With Charlie busy racing laps, Jean found herself volunteering at the track, working hard in the canteen and on the pit gate. “I guess you could say we’ve got motorsport in our blood, we both just love it,” she said.

He did that for well over 20 years.” For Charlie, one of his fondest memories of past Classics was when he had the honour of arriving in the in-field with the winners’ trophy – in a helicopter. “Not many people can say they’ve arrived at the Classic in a chopper,” he said. “It was a very special moment in my life and something I’ll always treasure.” The pair, who are now life members of Premier Speedway, have spent the majority of their years dedicated to volunteering and will this weekend be sitting in the grandstand to take in the action. “I’ll be 84 at the end of this month and to date we’ve never missed a Classic and we’ll keep coming for as long as we can,” Charlie said. “Our grandson, Steven Watts, now drives a Street Stock and we also enjoy following him. He started racing juniors and has progressed over the years and we’re very proud of him.”

Crash crew a family affair

WHEN it comes to getting close to all the Sprintcar action at Warrnambool’s Premier Speedway the crash crew is right there among the thick of it.

And when the cars take to the track later today (Friday) for night one of the Classic, John Bamford and three of his five sons will be riding every wave of the action, ready to help upright overturned cars, clear the track of debris, chalk the start/finish line and carry out a wide range of jobs in the event of an accident or stoppage. John is a familiar face around the Warrnambool club, having attended his first Classic in 1979. “After watching the ’79 Classic I was pretty much hooked on Sprintcars and I think I’ve probably only missed a couple of the years, mainly due to work or family commitments,” he said. “I became a volunteer at Premier in the early 1980s and took on the role of public relations; looking after sponsors in the guest lounge. I did that for two or three years before Ian Shepherd (who has, sadly, since passed away) approached me to join the committee. From memory he was the manager at the time and I served on the committee until about the early-late 90s when I decided to head to the in-field and I’ve been there ever since.” Initially posted as clerk of the course, John then went on to join the crash crew and believes that was where his love of motorsport, and Sprintcars in particular, really developed. “I’ve always loved motor racing and four of my five sons – Triston, Keilan, Declan and Bowdyn – were introduced to it at an early age and they loved going along and sitting in the crowd and watching the cars. “I’m really proud that all four of them have

also been active members of the crash crew at various times over the years and three still are this season which is fantastic. To be able to share something that I enjoy so much, with my boys, is something pretty special. “Racing can certainly be a dangerous sport and yes I do get worried about them at times but they’re adults, they’ve grown up around Sprintcars and they have all gone through all the necessary training and continue to update their knowledge each season. I’m confident they know what they’re doing and they’re just as capable as every other member of our crew.” Like many voluntary sporting clubs and organisations, Premier Speedway is heavily reliant on its band of volunteers who often spend countless hours at the track doing a variety of behind-the-scenes jobs, along with carrying out their roles on race day. “We certainly need these young ones, like my boys, to ensure the future of motor racing events like the Classic because big meetings like this can’t happen without the efforts of a huge number of workers.” “Many of those are volunteers; whether that be the crash crew, flagmen, push ute drivers, tractor drivers, safety officers; the list is endless – so much goes on behindthe-scenes that most people don’t see.” In recognition of his many years voluntary service, John was presented with a life membership of Premier; an honour that he said he was privileged to have received “No-one volunteers to gain recognition or awards, it’s all about volunteering, but in saying that I was deeply humbled when I received my life membership a few years John Bamford and three of his sons, Bowdyn, Declan and Triston, at back. It’s something I’ll always treasure.” When the cars push off for the first time at Premier Speedway. 2024D Premier tonight, John and the boys will again be ready to play their role in the 51st Classic. event will be just as big and just as exciting Classic has again attracted a quality field “The Classic has become a huge part of – and we’re all proud to be out there doing and it’s anyone’s guess as to who’ll be on the racing calendar and I’m sure this year’s our bit on race night. As is tradition the the podium Sunday night.”

Patrick McKeever will again take up his position as one of two flagmen at this weekend’s Classic. 2024D

Best seat in the house PATRICK McKeever and Graeme Robertson undoubtedly share one of the best seats in the house when it comes to trackside action at Premier Speedway. Since the mid ‘80s the pair has been waving the flags from the start/finish line and will again take their positions for this weekend’s Classic. And just like their childhood years, going home “covered in mud” still signals a great day out – and they couldn’t be happier. “We just love it,” Pat said. “Like all the

volunteers at Premier we do our jobs for the love of the sport. “I remember going to the old horse racing track with my dad when I was only about five and watching the races. We both loved it.” Patrick’s first venture to the Classic was back in the mid 1970s when he sat in the crowd with his friends. After a brief spell from the sport due to work and other commitments, Patrick joined Premier as a club member in 1985. Around that time Premier had a flagman on the in-field, straight opposite the grandstand. “I remember one night we had a car spin in-field and there was so much dust

I couldn’t see him; being a back straight flaggy certainly had our challenges. “We also had to use a manual lap counter which counted down from 10 to zero. We really had to focus our eyes on the first three cars and say their numbers over and over in our heads as they went around. “Nowadays the cars all have transponders and can be electronically tracked which is a bonus.” When Patrick was first asked if he’d be keen to take on the main starters’ role (as a flagman) he didn’t hesitate – and neither did his mate Robbo. “Who wouldn’t enjoy what we do? I get a great view of all the action and get to volunteer in a sport I enjoy alongside my good mate. “Robbo and I work in unison and after doing it for so long it just comes naturally. We have 11 flags in the box and we know who grabs what flag and when.” While he takes great pride in keeping an accurate record of the laps, and the position of drivers, Patrick can recall his biggest “boo boo” which, fortunately, didn’t affect the race result. “I remember making a great mate of mine do an extra lap one year. David Hetherington used to drive a V26 that we called the ‘pie car’ because it was sponsored by Chitticks,” he said. “One year he was winning a heat race and when I reached for the chequered flag I accidentally waved the green, sending him on another lap. Thankfully he had a huge lead and still won so we could laugh about it together later.” When it comes to the Classic, Patrick believes the cream rises to the top.

“There’s a lot of prestige associated with this event and everyone wants to win it; to be a Classic winner is something special. I think the level of intensity from the drivers really goes up a couple of gears this weekend.” When it comes to recalling one of his most memorable Classics, Patrick said he can’t go past last year’s 50th running of the event. “Last year is pretty hard to beat,” he said. “To see young Brock Hallett round up American Sheldon Haudenschild on the final lap and take the chequered flag was pretty special. “He (Hallett) seemed to have found some moisture in the track on the last corner and just pipped him at the post. He’s a young kid who’s very humble and no doubt will remember that win for a long time to come.” And as for who he believes will be on the podium on Sunday night? “The field is wide open and that’s one of the beauties of the Classic. Anyone can win on their night,” he said. “Goodyer, Veal, Madsen, Doukas there’s so many talented drivers out there and all are hard to beat at their best. “The Classic attracts the best of the best, both from Australia and America, which is one of the reasons it’s so special – and it’s not just a great boost for Warrnambool but the entire region.” While he believes the future of the Classic looks bright, Patrick is concerned about the age of the current band of volunteers. “I don’t mean any disrespect at all but we’re all getting older. Premier, like so many other organisations, need young ones to start filling voluntary roles around the club. It’s so rewarding and varied and we’d love to see more young ones involved.”

A Classic momento

FOR Warrnambool journalist/photographer Geoff Rounds and publisher Tony Loxley, the release of ’50 Classic Classics’ has been a dream come true.

Both diehard motorsport enthusiasts, the pair is justifiably proud of the end result - a colourful portrayal of one of the greatest Sprintcar racing events in the country. “Publishing this book is a dream come true for me. I believe this illustrates this amazing race in the genre it should be,” Tony said. “There’s 540 pages, featuring more than 2000 images from 50 Classics. It’s certainly a great read and a special momento for any Speedway enthusiast. “Queenslander Brock Hallett, winner of last year’s 50th Classic, has written the foreword which is an exciting introduction. “It’s also interesting to see how fashions have changed through the decades with the way people dressed. There’s something for everyone.” Although now a Sydneysider, Tony is a passionate longtime motorsport enthusiast who has been trackside at the Classic since the early 1980s. “There’s just something magical about the Classic; it’s exciting, not just for spectators but also drivers, pit crews, volunteers, anyone trackside will tell you how great it is to be there,” Tony said. “I’m really proud to be involved and to have published this book.” Author Geoff Rounds’ passion for Sprintcars, and his uncanny ability to capture those perfect shots on raceday, is clearly evident within the pages of ’50 Classic Classics.’ Not only has he captured hundreds of drivers in action, he has also brought to life the work – and faces – of all those behind the scenes; the volunteers that work quietly and diligently, and often with no recognition, to ensure the Classic (and other scheduled race meetings) continue to runsmoothly and successfully at Premier. “This (the book) has been a lifelong dream of mine; I’ve always wanted to show all sides of Premier and I think this book does just that. In fact, I believe it’s the best Speedway book ever produced and anyone who’s even remotely keen on the sport will find something that interests them. “It’s not just about the drivers and the racing. Speedway is very much a community and I’ve been fortunate enough to have been a part of it for at least 40 years now.” According to Geoff, or ‘Roundsy’ as he is affectionately known by many, the Classic is unique in so many ways and none moreso than the fact that Americans can come over here and race in it. “Yes, there’s a $40,000 payout for the winner but for most drivers it’s all about the prestige that comes with being a Classic winner. For drivers, it’s right up there among the ones that they want to win.” Over the past 50 Classics there has been 27 different winners – all who no doubt carry with great pride the title of a ‘Classic winner.’ “Off track, the Classic brings people together; for many it’s an annual pilgrimage to Warrnambool and the western district. It is a huge boost to the region’s economy and that has big flow-on affects. “Accommodation houses are full, restaurants and eateries are busy and both Warrnambool and the wider

region is buzzing; there’s just something about this time of year.” With an initial print run of around 2,000 – plus 50 copies of an extraordinary leather-bound edition – the book is selling fast and Tony is now anticipating a second print run with sufficient demand. “We had a lot of pre-orders and sales have continued to soar. It’s nice to see people as excited about this book

yas I am.” For those who didn’t pre-order a copy, the book will be available at this weekend’s Fan Appreciation Day as well as limited numbers at the track this weekend and during next weekend’s Australian Title at Premier.
