Enjoying the ’Bool

Jamie Elliott and his three children, Jackson, Imogen and Savannah, enjoy an afternoon ride before heading to the playground at Lake Pertobe. 2024D DESPITE recent rain, intermittent warm weather and the scattered glimpses of sunny days ahead, Warrnambool has again proven a popular tourist destination these holidays. Caravan parks across the western district are alive with holidaymakers and locals keen to enjoy all that the seaside city has to offer – with everything from live shows at the theatre and lazy days on the beach through to the slides and swings at Lake Pertobe and the bright lights and sounds of the nightly carnival. Visitors Jamie and Stacey Elliott have been enjoying a stop-over in Warrnambool this week with their three young children, Jackson, Imogen and Savannah. Camping at Surfside, the family has been impressed by the variety of things to see and do.

“We’re staying in Warrnambool for five days as part of our three-week holiday and will head home (to the Gold Coast) later this week,” dad Jamie said on Wednesday. “We’ve all had an absolute ball; there’s so much to do here and the playground at Lake Pertobe is fantastic for kids; we don’t have anything like this back home. “There seems to be quite a few rabbits hanging around too….the kids say they’ve seen several while riding their bikes.” Flying kites on the beach, spending time in the playground and using their new drones in open spaces have all been high on the list of favourite activities according to six year-old Jackson and seven year-old Imogen. “Warrnambool is really good; the kids here are lucky to have this playground,” Jackson said.

Future Folk artists named

‘FUTURE Folk’ will return to the Port Fairy Folk Festival in 2024.

Folkie organisers last month announced the 10 young singers, songwriters, soloists and bands from the region who have been successful for the 2024 program which supports and celebrates young emerging artists between the ages of 12 and 25. Solo artists Jorja Cate, Sam Curtis, Etta Lane, Joseph Lim, Zoe Borthwick, Jasmin Adria, Hundo Milli and LJ Parks will join bands ‘My Giddy Aunt’ and ‘Out of Hand’ for Future Folk 2024. Port Fairy Folk Festival program director Justin Rudge said the Future Folk program was an important part of the annual festival, highlight the work of the incredible musicians from south west Victoria. “The Folkie is an opportunity for music lovers to experience extraordinary

musicians from around the world,” Mr Rudge said. “We’re honoured to play a part in developing the careers of local artists and to share their music with our loyal folk festival community and the artists who come to our event every year. “Come along and experience these musicians live as they showcase their work at Fiddlers Green in the centre of town and across the various stages in the festival arena.” The Future Folk program provides a platform for musicians from south west Victoria for career-enhancing mentoring sessions with renowned artists – as well as the chance to share the stage with established artists from around the globe. The festival has introduced music lovers to the artistry of the likes of Evie Dalton,

contracts for the Suburban Rail Loop, a project that is likely to cost a whopping $200 billion, making it the most expensive project in Victoria’s history. However, the biggest tragedy of Labor’s financial mismanagement is its impact on all Victorians, especially those of us living here in regional Victoria. Particularly after the pandemic, many young families wish to realise the Australian dream here in South West Coast. They want, and deserve, to enjoy the quality of life we cherish. Instead, they are left living under Labor’s neglect. In many ways, Victorians living in our regional towns and cities, like Portland, Koroit, Terang and Warrnambool, are the forgotten people. Regional Victorians make up approximately one quarter of Victoria’s population, yet we received just 13 percent of infrastructure funding in last year’s budget and 11 percent the year prior. All the while, Labor gleefully collects our stamp duty and taxes to spend in the city. Often in the form of reckless government waste, like the $600 million cancellation of the Commonwealth Games and $35 billion on cost overruns for major projects in Melbourne. Take our roads. Victoria’s road toll is the highest in 15 years, with more than half of

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said the Future Folk program was a great opportunity for up-and-coming artists to play at a world-class festival, make industry connections and growning their audiences. “The young local artists in the 2023 Future Folk program had memorable experiences performing and backstage, were grateful for the mentoring and gained valuable insights into the music industry,” Cr Smith said. “We loved seeing them play to big crowds in their local community and can’t wait to see the 2024 artists on stage in Port Fairy.” The Port Fairy Folk Festival is ready for another year of vibrant music, bringing thousands of music fans to the seaside town over the March long weekend, 8-11.

all lives lost occurring in rural Victoria. Yet Labor has the arrogance to claim our roads don’t need fixing in the first place. Regional Victoria’s roads are living proof that Labor has run out of money. The 37 per cent cut to the regional road maintenance in this year’s budget is proof that whilst regional Victorians pay more than our fair share, we are getting far less back. By the next election in November 2026, Victoria will be up for an estimated $8.8 billion yearly interest bill. That equates to almost $2000 yearly per Victorian voter spent by Labor on interest repayments alone. A shocking number and one which Labor’s track record indicates will only increase as more cost blowouts and bungled projects occur. Victorians deserve responsible management of money by their state government, and regional Victorians deserve value for money from their taxes and fees. While the election may be still three years away, regional Victorians need to stand up now and tell Labor enough is enough, because we cannot afford to wait any longer.

Tasty Plate closes its doors BROPHY has this week confirmed the closure of its ‘Tasty Plate’ café and catering service in Warrnambool.

In a statement issued on Monday, Brophy Family and Youth Services said it was with a ‘heavy heart’ that it announced the closure of its social enterprise, Tasty Plate, which had provided training opportunities for people with disabilities. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite the efforts of Tasty Plate and Brophy (together with community patronage) the café/ catering business has continued to struggle to maintain its financial viability as a social enterprise. Tasty Plate’s business model is reliant not only on catering revenue but also NDIS funding. The NDIS participant-funded packages have continued to diminish in number and funding amount over the past three years. “Our significant investments, especially over the past 18 months to recruit new participants have not materialised, and the participant pool has declined to less than 20 part-time participants,” this week’s statement read.

In addition, Tasty Plates’ operational expenses have been significantly impacted by inflation and workforce conditions. The cost of goods has soared and so too have wages and conditions. Unfortunately, Tasty Plate is not an isolated case. The recently published report by the National Disability Service, State of the Disability Sector Report 2023, paints a bleak picture for the sector – with 34 per cent of providers posting deficits for the previous financial year (including Tasty Plate). “It’s important to note that Brophy’s other funded services remain fully operational and unaffected due to different funding sources,” Brophy CEO Francis Broekman said. “Brophy has been strongly committed to Tasty Plate and its participants for many years,” Ms Broekman said. “In 2017 Brophy purchased a home for Tasty Plate in Fairy St through its reserves and with the generous support of several philanthropic trusts and individual donors, Brophy also invested in renovating the premises as a purpose-built home for Tasty Plate.” The Fairy Street café has been well supported by the community, with many buying takeaway meals and lunches.

This photo, taken last October, shows the smiles on the faces of NDIS participants at Tasty Plate’s Warrnambool cafe. 2023D “We also thank the philanthropic trusts and donors for their support in this journey over a long time, through highs and lows, and their courage to invest in Tasty Plate and its participants.

Ms Broekman said staff have been proactive in building their qualification base, both in disability support and hospitality, providing a quality service. “They can be extraordinarily proud of what they have “We thank the 19 staff for their achieved and the spirit they have passion and quality of service shown in the most challenging of times and circumstances. over the years.”

Bumper summer at Moyne parks

MOYNE Shire has cemented its position as the summer playground, with bumper bookings across the six councilowned caravan parks. Gardens, Southcombe, Yambuk, Killarney and Koroit caravan parks were all at capacity over the Christmas/New Year holiday period while the Mortlake park also had strong bookings. Across the peak season from December 26 to January 31 more than 9000 individuals were booked to stay at a caravan park within the Moyne shire. Close to 8000 of those bookings were at the two Port Fairy parks which represented about 80 per cent occupancy for the whole season, with more than 800 sites booked. Bookings for the 2023/24 season are on par with the 2022/23 season and do not take into account the number of drive-ins. Moyne mayor Cr Ian Smith said that as of January 2, more than 3000 people had enjoyed their summer holidays at a Moyne shire caravan park. “It’s been fantastic to see our parks full and people enjoying everything the Moyne Shire has to offer,” he said. “I’m also please that while it’s not at capacity, the Mortlake Caravan Park has also had strong bookings across the peak period with more than 60 people staying. “Port Fairy in particular has been incredibly busy and businesses are reporting they have been flat out with locals and holidaymakers enjoying the break.”

Caravan parks across Moyne Shire were well utilised over the holiday period. 2023E Cr Smith said the Work and Play program, which was targeted at seasonal workers, had also provided a boost to local businesses. He said 22 seasonal workers from 10 local businesses were using Southcombe Lodge and sites at Southcombe Caravan Park.

“I’m really proud of this initiative, which provides local businesses with accommodation options for seasonal staff,” he said. “Offering accommodation has helped businesses attract staff for the busy summer season. We had a fantastic response to our marketing campaign, and

we have been able to support 10 local businesses to be able to open and offer their full services. “This means visitors have a great experience while in our region, which increases the likelihood of them returning next year and in turn boosting the local economy.”

Speaking about the impact of public libraries on community health and wellbeing, Library Customer and Community Services Coordinator Kerrie Nicholson said the animation was a powerful way to engage the broader community in social issues that affect everyone. “Public libraries are far more than books, they are places of connection, and often safe spaces, or sites for support.

We hope this project continues to reach out to our community, and beyond,” Ms Nicholson said. Warrnambool mayor Ben Blain said the project highlighted the value of the library as a community asset. “The new library provides all the traditional library services but also improved accessibility along with a diverse range of programs that a contemporary library is well placed to provide,” Cr Blain said. A discussion and preview screening of the animation was held last month at the library. Project participants received assistance from writers S.E. Hermanoczki and Jenny Valentish and from animators at One Day Studios.

Ceiling collapses in storm HEAVY rain across the Warrnambool district sent many holidaymakers indoors and shoppers dashing across car parks last weekend. Last Sunday’s downpour saw some parts of the car park at Gateway under water for a short time while a small proportion of campers in Warrnambool’s caravan parks opted to cut short their stay. In a statement issued earlier this week, Warrnambool City Council said that once the rain stopped, most areas drained reasonably quickly and roads that had been temporarily shut (including Japan, Breton and Wanstead streets) were quickly reopened. No council services were impacted by the rain and Sunday morning’s Surf T Surf once again attracted a large field of participants and was hailed a huge success. According to Bureau of Meteorology statistics, just over 74mm of rain fell overnight on Sunday. For Panmure home owner Brendan Hyland, the downpour resulted in the collapse of his kitchen ceiling. “I got home at about 6.30pm on Sunday and as soon as I stepped inside I was standing in about a centimetre of water,” Brendan said. “There was water all over the kitchen floor and benches and when I looked up I noticed the ceiling had sagged – I just touched it and down it all came.” Brendan has lived in the home for about 23 years and has never before seen this occur. “I always empty my gauge each day and I tipped 55mm out on Monday morning,” he said. “It (the rain) certainly made a mess inside but it could’ve been worse. I’m working with my insurance company now so I’m sure it will all be fixed and sorted as soon as possible.”

Farms needed for student training

SOUTH west Victorian farmers are being asked to open their gates to help train a new generation of farm workers.

South West TAFE agriculture teaching education manager Bec Toleman said students needed access to animals and different types of farms to get the most out of their agricultural courses. “We want to provide our students with the opportunity to observe, learn and participate in activities on farms to expand their knowledge,” Ms Toleman said. However, a dearth of options has led to an appeal to the industry for greater input. “For the past few years, I’ve been using my own network of friends and contacts but we need to access animals and more farms for all of our ag courses,” Ms Toleman said. Ms Toleman said it was important that students see different types of farms, from family to corporate operations, organic, beef, sheep, dairy or produce. Students need practical work and can help with onfarm jobs. “We want our students to gain a wide variety of skills and an understanding of the different farming enterprises in the south-west region,” she said. “If anyone has animals coming up for drenching, vaccination, if any sheep, beef or dairy farms are doing anything new and innovative that can benefit students we would love to hear from you,” she said. “It could be doing multispecies pastures, installing new equipment or helping with some fencing; we can come out and use their property to teach the students and also help get the jobs done on the farm.” Last year students helped drench more than 450 sheep on one property and also watched vets preg testing animals. “The more input we have from industry, the better it will be for trainees,” Ms Toleman said. “If we open our doors to the farms, the farms are going to see the benefits and start signing up trainees. “We want practical activities, not just coming out and watching but being able to do things that will help students gain knowledge and experience. Help for those needing aged care NAVIGATING through the process of accessing aged care services “If you have visited your parents, an older friend or relative over summer can be a confusing, and often daunting process, for many families. and noticed they may need some extra support to continue to live well In order to access Australian Government-funded services, ‘My Aged Care’ is the starting point – but exactly how, what and when to start are just a few of the questions that can often confuse many. The Archie Graham Community Centre in Warrnambool is offering local residents the opportunity to learn more about how to access a range of vital services currently on offer. “We are here to help people navigate their way through the necessary processes and to help our elderly residents to continue to live well at home,” community programs coordinator at the Archie Graham centre, Clare Vaughan said.

independently at home, these sessions are ideal.” Information sessions about My Aged Care will be held at the centre between 1.30pm and 2.30pm next Thursday, January 18, and again on Tuesday, March 12. The sessions will give participants information on council’s home support services, the types of aged care services that are available, eligibility for services, and costs you may need to pay. Warrnambool resident Nola Golding now visits the Archie Graham centre three times a week to access the hydrotherapy pool and also enjoys the weekly ‘unfinished projects’ sessions. “This centre is just wonderful and offers so much for older residents which helps keep our minds and bodies active,” Nola said. “I live alone so these sessions are helping me to maintain my independence, meet new friends, enjoy the social side of activities and also feel well respected and treated. “It’s important for many of us to be able to stay at home and live healthy, independent lives for as long as possible – and the staff here (at the centre) can help anyone learn about how to access aged care services.” For bookings and further information either call in to the centre, at 118 Timor Street Warrnambool, phone 5559 4920 or email Clare at cvaughan@ warrnambool.vic.gov.au.

Spotlight on Port Fairy

Port Fairy celebrates new year PORT Fairy saw the new year in with plenty of colour and excitement last Sunday week. Children from Port Fairy Consolidated and St Patrick’s schools joined together for an evening of celebration and song. New Year’s Eve festivities in the town once again attracted large crowds, with celebrations proving a highlight on the Moyneyana Festival calendar of events. Thousands lined the streets to view the parade as it made its way through the centre of the village. Various prizes were awarded to participants including best decorated bike (won by Evie, Cade and Blythe Rissman), best themed float (won by Port Fairy Little Athletics) and best float (Home Among the Gum Trees). A spectacular fireworks display lit up the night sky as the clock hit midnight, while families were also able to enjoy an earlier display at 9.30pm. Icecream, hot dogs, pizza and coffee were among the crowd favourites as local vendors satisfied hungry visitors with stalls alongside Fiddler’s Green. Glow sticks, music and entertainment ensured a great night out for the young and young at heart. According to Moyneyana Festival committee member Maureen Hedger, New Year’s Eve was a big hit. “It was most definitely a success and would be the highlight of the festival so far,” she said.

Hundreds tackle Surf T Surf NOT even overnight showers could deter the more than 800 entrants from tackling this year’s Surf T Surf in Warrnambool.

“We were really happy with how the event went,” said volunteer organiser James Byron. “This year we had 840 entries across the four events; the 10km and six kilometre runs, six kilometre walk and the three kilometre lap of the lake. “It was great to see so many people out and about and to see such a big crowd again gathering at the start/finish line opposite the Kiosk Café at Lake Pertobe.” What initially began as an idea from a group of local footballers has since grown to one of the biggest community run/walk events in the district – much to the delight of organisers. “The event continues to be a popular one, attracting not only local participants but also runners and walkers from as far as the other side of Melbourne, Ballarat and from many parts of the state,” James said. “This year we saw growth in entries in the 10km as well as the lap of the lake. “The 10km course takes runners all around the heart of the city; it’s not too often you get the chance to run down the middle of Liebig Street and surrounds.” Results from the event were as follows:

Pirates continue to steer the ship TOP side Port Fairy will head into day two of round 12 this weekend, relatively confident of chasing down Mortlake’s 161 runs. Southcombe Park proved a tough battle ground for the Cats, who went into the Christmas break sitting 10th on the Warrnambool District ladder with just three wins under their belts – in stark contrast to ladder leaders Port Fairy with eight wins to date. After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Cats’ openers struggled at the crease, both contained to single digits, while the home side dominated in the field – containing the visitors to 10/161 in the 76th over. The Pirates’ Henry Bensch proved a formidable opposition for Mortlake’s batsmen, finishing the day with figures of 4/37 from 14 overs which included three maidens. Vice-captain Alexander Jennings also had a great day out, taking 3/35 from his 21.3 overs which included nine maidens. Other wicket takers were James Van De Peer 1/25 and Murray Staude 1/4. In other day one, round 12 clashes last weekend, Brierly-Christ Church elected to bat first against Northern Raiders and made 10/183, Dennington is sitting on 5/93 in reply to Nestles’ 10/70 while Russells Creek had a big day out smashing 7/280 against West Warrnambool. Wesley Yambuk won the toss and chose to bat against Allansford Panmure. The Titans made 10/64 while the Gators are 4/200 in reply. At the Merrivale Recreation Reserve, the home side won the toss, elected to bat and made 10/173 – in reply the Eels are currently 0/35 after six overs.
