When one door closes...

THE old saying ‘When one door closes, another opens’ is the perfect fit for 29-year-old Brandon Kerr’s inspirational story.

When Brandon’s previous workplace, Tasty Plate, closed its doors rather than succumbing to setbacks, Brandon bravely registered with are-able. There, he found a supportive ally in Kristy Malone, a dedicate disability employment services (DES) consultant, and has since found meaningful and rewarding employment with Kings Catering. “I first met Brandon two years ago when he would regularly visit us,” Rob King said. “I soon recognised his incredible demeanour and the fantastic skills he demonstrated at Tasty Plate. I thought he would be a perfect fit for the team once his previous workplace closed.” Today, Brandon flourishes in his role at Kings Catering, working closely alongside Rob King himself. His responsibilities include food preparation, kitchen hand tasks, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, dishwashing and shopping. The structure of work has brought stability to Brandon’s life and he’s embracing the opportunity to learn new skills and enhance his independence. “I’m thankful for the opportunities Rob has given me,” Brandon said. For Kristy and the team at are-able, Brandon’s success story exemplifies the power of collaboration and community support in creating meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. And for Kings Catering, Brandon’s presence enriches their team and underscores their commitment to inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. As Brandon continues to thrive in his role, his journey serves as a beacon of hope, reminding everyone of the transformative power of employment and community solidarity. “Brandon’s story inspires us to overcome obstacles with determination and embrace support from our communities,” Kristy said. “Through Brandon’s journey, we witness the profound impact of resilience, dedication, and the unwavering support of those around us.” Are-able remains committed in its dedication to dismantling obstacles, fostering avenues for growth, and igniting optimism for individuals in pursuit of fulfilling employment opportunities. Kristy’s unwavering support and consistent visits were pivotal in Brandon’s transition. “I can offer extra assistance/training on the job if required, assistance with Centrelink and fortnightly visits in the workplace,” Kristy explained.

Emmanuel launches appeal

EMMANUEL College is the place to be this afternoon (Friday) with the official launch of the school’s major capital appeal for the stateof-the-art Edmund Rice Centre. The appeal will kick off with a much-anticipated basketball match at 2pm when the ‘All Stars Warrnambool Legends’ will take on a group of talented Emmanuel College students. Along with the basketball match, today’s program will also give the community an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities and see student project displays. All proceeds from the day will go directly towards the new Edmund Rice Centre. It is anticipated the centre will accommodate up to 250 year nine students and will be designed to cater to the unique requirements of the 9@RICE program. Commencing construction last year, it is projected to be ready for occupation by the start of the 2025 school year. The college is launching a capital appeal in support of its target to raise $1.5 million towards the cost of the centre’s construction. To date, the appeal has already raised $300,000 through generous community donations. It is now approaching 10 years since Emmanuel College last asked the community for support to develop the Emmanuel Centre. Since then the centre has become

the heart and soul of college events and celebrations and is used continuously throughout the school day, and by community groups and organisations at night and on weekends. The extensive current works represent the largest investment in improvements in the school’s history. The college is grateful for a state government grant of $2 million – the balance will be funded by the college through its building levy, a bank loan and fundraising. College principal Peter Morgan said today’s event would bring the community together to witness some good old-fashion hospitality and an exciting basketball match. “Emmanuel students will be pitting themselves against an All Stars team comprising alumni and celebrities,” Mr Morgan said. “The Rice Rally is an opportunity to learn about the Edmund Rice Centre and the 9@RICE program, both of which are unique to Warrnambool, and join in the spirit of growth that’s been part of our school story for over 150 years.” The All Stars team will comprise former AFL players Jonathan Brown, Ben Cunnington and Anthony Daniher; Marli BlackeyNoter (former Warrnambool Mermaids player), Steve Callaghan (Callaghan Motors), Leah Kermeen (netball legend and Emmanuel teacher), Molly McKinnon (current Mermaids basketballer), Matthew Monk and daughter Layla, Mick Owen (ski and surf lifesaving champion), Andrew Sloane (South

Relay exceeds THIS year’s Warrnambool Relay for Life event is expected to raise just on $65,000, far exceeding the expectations of organisers.

Below: Former Warrnambool College student Hannah VanZyl plays the bagpies and leads the first lap for carers and survivors.

Jodie Carey and her dedicated team of volunteers said they were absolutely thrilled with Saturday’s event, which saw a large group of survivors, carers, family and friends take to the track at Deakin University, relaying from 12 noon through until 10pm. “It was an absolutely amazing event and I cannot thank participants, sponsors and other supporters enough for their contributions,” Jodie said. “Our team of volunteers have worked extremely hard to make this event a success and I’m proud of each and every one of them – as I am of all those who took part. “Our tally had reached $61,800 on Saturday night so we’re very confident that will easily hit $65,000 once all money comes in from the teams.” The walk kicked-off at noon with the cutting of the ribbon by local, Renee Lane, who bravely reflected on her own cancer journey and who also walked in memory of her husband Matt. Breast cancer nurse Bec Hay and survivor Kerry Thompson were guest speakers during a special afternoon tea for survivors and carers while an

emotional candlelight ceremony gave participants the opportunity to honour, connect, remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones while reflecting on those currently undertaking their own personal cancer journeys. “The candlelight ceremony is always a special one; it’s lovely to see those candles burning brightly around the track in the dark,” Jodie said. Denise Kelly and Ken Radley spoke of their journeys to date, giving a highly emotional insight into the challenges and experiences families often face. “The weather was perfect and the atmosphere all afternoon and into the night was amazing. Our current committee are now keen to work towards our fourth relay, to be held in 2025, and we have some new volunteers coming on board which is also exciting.” Two awards were presented on Saturday night. The first, which went to the team that raised the most amount of money, was won by ‘Pal Carers’ who raised just over $15,000. The second award, the ‘Spirit of Relay’ was presented to Warrnambool’s ‘Team Fluffy.’ “Team Fluffy was absolutely amazing. The team walked for their mum who, sadly, had only recently lost her battle with cancer so it was very raw for them all yet they were so brave and got out there and walked in her memory.”

Kids in the kitchen

CHILDREN are being encouraged to get into the kitchen thanks to an initiative by the Warrnambool Community Garden.

The garden is expanding its popular Sprouts Club afterschool activities and has introduced an exciting new ‘Kids in the Kitchen’ program. Heather Ryan, Sprouts Club co-ordinator, said the program was committed to providing nature play and gardening activities as a crucial link for primary school aged children to connect with their food and the broader natural world. Carers are required to stay on-site and encouraged to join in the fun and educational activities. “The Sprouts Club is more than just a gardening program, it’s a space for children to explore, create, and connect with nature,” Ms Ryan said. “It’s a joyful journey of discovery where kids learn not only about gardening, cooking and the pleasures of food but also about themselves and the world around them.” The sessions will be held once a month, on Wednesday afternoons from 4pm to 5.30pm, aligning with the

Warrnambool Community Garden market. Special school holiday sessions will also be available to further enrich the learning experience. In addition, Sprouts Club will now feature monthly craftbased sessions on the first week of each month, offering a unique blend of seasonal activities. Children can take home their creations, gaining insights into nature, nurturing creativity, and

honing their imaginative skills. Deputy convenor of the garden, Courtney Mathew, expressed his gratitude for the Warrnambool City Council Healthy Warrnambool grant, allowing the Sprouts Club to offer these sessions for free. Donations are welcomed to contribute to the not-forprofit, volunteer-run programs, ensuring the continued provision of affordable and enriching experiences for the community.

“Our six-acre site reflects our commitment to creating a space where people can come together to grow, learn, produce and share,” Ms Mathew said. “The site features private and communal plots, bush food and native areas, herb and sensory gardens, a dedicated kids garden, a chook yard, and a converted quarry now serving as an amphitheatre.” The Sprouts Club is open to everyone and participants

are encouraged to commit to the sessions when booking to ensure that all interested children can benefit from the program. Warrnambool Community Garden membership provides families with an excellent opportunity to deepen their connection with the garden, promoting health, strength, mobility, and mental well-being through gardening. Meals delivered in ‘green’ car A NUTRITIOUS meal, a friendly “So it’s the double benefit of a face and now, one Meals- vehicle (that has zero emissions) powered by green energy.” on-Wheels car even has zero being The solar panels on the Archie emissions. Graham Centre mean that the The Warrnambool City Council’s latest all-electric fleet car is being used for daily meal deliveries to help vulnerable residents continue to live independently in their own home. The car is powered by a new charging station installed at the Archie Graham Centre, with the centre itself recently having solar panels installed. It follows the introduction of council’s first all-electric car in late 2023, which is used by the Local Laws team. Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain believes a Meals-on-Wheels car was the perfect candidate for electrification. “Because delivery runs happen five times a week, using an electric car for Meals-on-Wheels makes a lot of sense because we have a lot of kilometres being driven over the course of the week; but they are all local,” he said. “The car can charge up at the Archie Graham Centre during the day when it’s not being used, and it can also take advantage of the power being generated by the solar panels.

facility is able to reduce its carbon emissions by 2000kg per month, or the equivalent of taking six cars off the road. This has also led to electricity costs for the centre reducing by $500 per month (on average), and in the summer months, feed in credit can exceed $6000 per month which leads to further savings. Cr Blain said that as well as the Archie Graham Centre, solar panels had also been installed at the Civic Centre, the Warrnambool Library, AquaZone, Warrnambool Art Gallery, the Warrnambool Stadium and the council depot. “As an organisation that uses the majority of our electricity during the day, solar makes a lot of sense,” Cr Blain said. “We are working on multiple fronts to reduce our emissions, and more electric vehicles in our fleet where possible are an important part of that.” New Meals-on-Wheels volunteers are always welcome. Professor to speak on autism ONE of the world’s leading specialists on Autism Spectrum Disorders will give south-west residents a better understanding of the condition during a series of talks in Warrnambool next month.

Community South West is hosting Professor Tony Attwood for three practical seminars on Wednesday, March 6 and Thursday, March 7 at the Lighthouse Theatre, Warrnambool. The seminars will provide valuable explanations, strategies and advice and are open to anyone. These sessions will be particularly useful for parents, carers, teachers, support workers and allied health professionals. Professor Atwood will discuss cognitive

abilities (a different way of thinking and learning), managing feelings (cognitive behaviour therapy to manage anxiety), sadness and anger; and making friends (strategies to improve social understanding and friendship skills). It will be Professor Attwood’s first seminar in Warrnambool since 2017. Community South West executive officer Richard Zerbe said Professor Attwood was a popular and respected speaker who had enriched the global understanding of autism. Mr Zerbe said the three presentations offered a rare opportunity for regional audiences to hear from an internationallyrecognised expert. “Autism is very common in the community and impacts many families,” Mr Zerbe said. “The information and insight Professor Atwood will share will give local people

a better understanding of autism and how to deal with it.” Professor Attwood holds an Honour’s degree in psychology from the University of Hull, a Master’s degree in clinical psychology from the University of Surrey, a PhD from the University of London, and currently serves as an adjunct Professor at Griffith University in Queensland. He is renowned for his extensive contributions to understanding Asperger’s Syndrome, now commonly referred to as autism, and has authored numerous publications on the subject. For more information contact Mr Zerbe on 0448 505 885 or email executiveofficer@communitysouthwest.

Time to fish

A NEW program to get kids hooked on fishing has been rolled out to local primary school students. Member for Western Victoria, Jacinta Ermacora, visited Warrnambool Primary School last Thursday to deliver the ‘Little Angler Kits’ to year six students, encouraging them to get out in the fresh air and try their luck at fishing. “It was an exciting day and it was wonderful to see all the children so excited and very engaged in the idea of being outside and the personal pride of catching their own fish,” Ms Ermacora said. “I was very grateful for the warm welcome I received at the school and it was lovely to be able to also meet the new year six leaders.” The kits include a quality angling rod, a reel with fishing line, tackle box, hooks, swivels and lure – all packed in a light-weight carry case. To date, 95,000 kits have been delivered to primary students across the state as part of the state government’s $96 million package to further improve recreational fishing, boating, piers and aquaculture. School principal at Warrnambool Primary, Peter Lee, was pleased to see the students’ enthusiasm. “This is a great way to get kids outdoors, away from their devices and to learn a healthy, new activity,” Mr Lee said.

Fun start to new year THERE was plenty of fun at Warrnambool West Primary School last week to kick start the new year. Twenty new foundation students began their education at the school, while the entire student body enjoyed a free family barbecue lunch on Friday followed by a hip hop performance in the sunshine. Visiting dance company ‘Stomp’ taught several routines while families were also invited to join in for a ‘chicken dance.’ Warrnambool West has also welcomed four new staff members this year – Madison Hoy (year 1-2), Daniel Symonds (year 3-4), Merran Moir (music specialist) and David Yates (student wellbeing mentor).

Lamb Yarding: 9400 (NQ)

Hamilton agents today penned 9,400 lambs representing a reduction of 4,100 on the previous week. The overall quality was very good with an excellent selection of trade weight lambs on offer with a relatively small tail when compared to last week. Not all processors were present and those on the rail were not fully active. There was reduced feeder and restocker interest in lambs destined for paddocks in SE South Australia. The market overall was fully firm to $10/head dearer over

some categories, dependent on quality with lambs back to the paddock stronger also by $10/head. The best of the heavy lambs sold to $210/head with the majority of lambs to the trade realizing between 600c and 680c/kg cwt over most lines. Light 12 to 16kg lambs sold from $50 to $116/head with the 18 to 22kg to the trade from $115 to $150/head. The 22 to 26kg lamb sold from $136 to $160 with hoggets to $85/head. Strap yourself in for charity HAVE you ever wanted to take a ride in a Sprintcar? Here’s your chance to strap yourself in and ride five laps of the Simpson Speedway track in the back seat of a 410 Sprintcar – all the while raising some much-needed funds for the Gillin Boys Foundation (established in 2016 by Christopher and his younger brother Aaron to raise funds for, and awareness of, muscular dystrophy). Seventeen local sprintcar enthusiasts took advantage of the opportunity last weekend, taking to the track with experienced drivers Tim Rankin and John Vogels. “Judging by the looks on the faces of those who had a ride, it was certainly an exciting experience,” Simpson club member and vicechairman of the Gillin Boys Foundation Jess Nolte said. For just $270, participants can sit in the back of the sprintcar and enjoy five laps of the Simpson track. While $20 from that amount goes towards the purchase of a passenger license, the rest goes directly to the foundation. “We raised just over $4000 for the foundation last Sunday which was amazing and we are hoping that racegoers will get behind Green Night over the long weekend where we will raffle off two rides,” Nolte said. Green Night will be held at the Simpson track on Saturday, March 9. The crowd is encouraged to wear a touch of green, donation tins will be trackside and raffle tickets can be purchased for the chance to win a ride. “We held a green night last year and raised just over $13,000 for the foundation so we’re hoping to raise even more this year,” Nolte said. “Anyone who would like to donate, or purchase a ride in a two-seater sprintcar can just go on to the Gillin Boys Foundation website and follow the links.” The March meeting at Simpson Speedway will see the running of the Victorian 410 Sprintcar Title, Formula 500s and Junior Formula 500s. Cars on track from 5pm.

Sheer talent wins silver

PORT Fairy’s talented group of surfboat rowers, ‘The Shearwaters’ have won silver at the Australian Surf Rowers League (ASRL).

The Shearwaters brought home silver in the Master 220 (combined rowers age) division at the prestigious competition, held at Lorne beach last Thursday, February 15. The ASRL attracts top quality teams from all over Australia, making it even more difficult to win a place on the podium.

“This has been many years in the making. Our crew has been competing together for more than 10 years and has covered thousands of kilometres, training in the sea and the gym and has travelled to every corner of our beautiful country.” The team comprises 51 year-old Dean Dwyer, Scott Hetherington (56), Greg Dalton (63), Shaun Murrihy (60) and sweep, Paul Buchanan. In the lead-up to the ASRL event, the team also won gold at the Victorian Championships Masters 220 Division, held at Lorne on Saturday February 10.

“Medals are really, really hard to win at the ASRL so to bring home a silver is very special,” Martina Murrihy said.
