WHEN driving around the district looking at Christmas lights this festive season, a stop in Panmure is a must. Lisa and her partner at 8840 Princes Highway have spent the last two months decorating their home, inside and out, with a large amount of Christmas lights, inflatables and ornaments. And their hard work is reflected in the bright and colourful display that hundreds of passers-by are now enjoying. “This really is my guilty pleasure,” Lisa said. “I’ve been doing this for about 17 years now; I used to decorate my home in Melbourne but since being on a bigger block here in Panmure I have a bigger canvas. “We just love Christmas and the joy our display brings to so many people. We turn them all on as soon as it gets dark each night and we leave them on until late. Everyone is welcome to stop and enjoy.”

Shear Madness begins SIX men, 24 long hours of shearing, thousands of sheep – Shear Madness at the Warrnambool Showgrounds is underway! Once again Roger Mifsud and his sons Corey and Brody will face a gruelling 24 hours of shearing in the hope of increasing public awareness of mental health issues and to promote the Let’s Talk organisation. This year the Mifsud’s will be joined on the stands by fellow shearers and friends Josh and Brandon Bone of Nhill and local, Phil Edwards. Appropriately named ‘Shear Madness’ the event kicked off with a special ‘welcome to country’ early this morning (Friday) before shearing got underway at 9am. While they hope the community will get behind them and donate to the Let’s Talk Foundation during the course of the event, for the team the shear-athon is more about increasing awareness of mental

health issues and encouraging people to speak out and seek help. Speaking with the Warrnambool Weekly earlier this week, Corey Mifsud said he was honoured the event is now in its third year and he thanked all those who continue to support it. “While this is always a physical challenge for us, it’s also very much a mental challenge,” he said. “Mental health is something that affects us all and sadly many of us have lost someone as a result. Even if we only raise a few dollars, if we can help save just one person that’s what it’s all about.” Corey and the team will shear throughout the night and are looking forward to seeing a large crowd gather at the showgrounds to cheer them on, enjoy the music and the social atmosphere. “There’ll be plenty of food and drink available to purchase and we’re hoping people will come along and have a great time,” he said. “There’s no shortage of sheep to be shorn so we’ll

certainly have our work cut out for us once again. Personally, my body probably isn’t quite ready for it but having been personally touched by mental health this is a cause very close to my heart. “The Let’s Talk Foundation is such an important one.” While the shears will be set down around 6pm tomorrow night, the action will continue long into the evening with an auction, live entertainment and celebrations. And for those who can’t be at the showgrounds, the auction will be live on AuctionsPlus. “After raising around $78,000 for Let’s Talk last year, our target is $100,00 this year,” Corey said. “We probably won’t know the final tally for a couple of weeks. The money is certainly important in terms of ensuring the great work of the foundation continues so we’re calling on the community to get behind us all and give what you can.”

The spirit of Christmas THE spirit of Christmas was well and truly alive in Dennington last Friday night.

The community came out in droves for what was a highly successful ‘Carols by the Merri.’ Hundreds braved the cool and overcast conditions for an evening of music and traditional carols as children danced and sang on and off the stage. Battery-operated candles, picnic rugs and blankets could be seen all over the lawns. Children from St John’s and St Pius primary schools kept the crowd entertained with a variety of songs, along with Gabby Steele, Emmanuel College, Salvation Army Band, the Men’s Tin Shed Singers and Holiday Actors. “Considering the weather wasn’t all that great, we were happy to see a crowd of about 1000,” John Harris, president of the Dennington Community Association said. “Thanks to the support of the Warrnambool City Council and various sponsors we are able to put this on as a free community event, with entry via a gold coin donation. “This year the money raised from entry will go towards the Warrnambool and District Community Hospice group.” While the final tally is not yet known, Mr Harris is hoping this will amount to around $1000. “The carols is always a wonderful community event, with various community groups helping out on the night. “This year we had the local cricket club, football club, netballers, St John’s and the Nestle Rowing Club all doing various roles which was greatly appreciated and the kindergarten ran a raffle.”

THE Christmas spirit will be alive and well in Koroit this weekend when the town’s Lions club, in partnership with the Koroit Irish Festival, again hosts ‘Carols at the Stage.’ The carols will take place in the village green at the family-friendly time of 3pm-5.30pm on Sunday. Among the featured performers will be Angela Kenna and Keelan Mast, Barbara Brooks, The Flannelettes and special guest Danielle Stearman. The stage will also come alive with performances by Holiday Actors, the South West Coast Performing Arts Choir, Koroit CWA and children from local schools and kindergartens. even a visit from ‘Irish Santa’ will all be included on the afternoon’s program. The market, which has been included for the first time as part of the Carols celebrations, is being coordinated by the Port Fairy Community House and will be the perfect opportunity to enjoy some Christmas shopping. “The carols is always such a wonderful day for the community,” Adele MacDonald, Koroit Irish Festival president said. “This event really sets the town up for the festive season and to have the market this year will really take it to the next level; we’re all very excited.” Members of the Koroit Lions Club will operate the barbecue and sell their famous Christmas cakes.

Funding for shopfronts SEVERAL businesses across Port Fairy and Koroit look set to spruce up their shopfronts thanks to a recent round of council grants. Seventeen businesses across Moyne Shire will share in more than $45,000 in funds through the annual Business Façade Improvement Program. Mayor Cr Ian Smith said the annual program was a cornerstone of council’s business support program. “This program helps businesses look their best, which helps them attract customers and in turn makes our streetscapes more attractive and appealing,” Cr Smith said. “Funding allocated under this round of the program will be used for a range of improvements including painting, new signage, repairs to window frames and improvements to outdoor areas. “It’s fantastic to see businesses in each of our main centres benefitting from this program and I’m looking forward to seeing the works completed and the difference they will make to the appearance and feel of our streetscapes.” This fourth round of the program will contribute to the total value of the projects (including business co-contributions) estimated at $147,767. Among the businesses to receive funding were: Port Fairy – Benning Boutique $750 (façade painting), Home Grown Café $1012 (cladding, tiles and repainting), Seacombe House $750 (window frame repairs), The Stump Hotel $3750 (signage and outdoor dining improvements), Moody Plumbing $594 (façade repainting), Asphat Pty Ltd $3750 (window frame repairs), South West Makers Association $1450 (signage) and Higher State Co $3750 (fence restoration and signage). An extra special Christmas

MEMBERS of the Warrnambool Men’s Shed are helping to make Christmas that little bit extra special for one lucky family this year.

The group has constructed a sturdy cubby house as this year’s prize in South West Healthcare’s Christmas online raffle. The cubby house, which is currently on display in the foyer of the Warrnambool Base Hospital, is fully-demountable and measures 1800 metres square. The cubby is made of treated pine and features a corrugated iron roof – the perfect spot for endless hours of fun for little visitors. The lucky raffle winner will be responsible for collecting their prize – which will be dismantled for easy transportation to the winner’s home. “We are very grateful to the men’s shed for making this wonderful cubby house, which I’m sure will make some lucky child very happy,” Suzan Morey, South West Healthcare community partnerships manager said. Tickets are just $5 each and can be purchased online by heading to www. galabid.com/southwesthealthcare. All proceeds from the raffle will help purchase $9,000 worth of toys and play therapy equjpment for the health provider’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). The raffle will be drawn when the 1,000th ticket is sold (or on December 20 if not sold prior) and the winner notified.

This cubby house, made by the Warrnambool Men’s Shed, is this year’s prize in the SWH online Christmas raffle. 2023E

Triumph owners dig deep

SOUTH West Healthcare has taken another step towards purchasing new equipment for its mental health service thanks to a donation from the Triumph Sports Owners.

Members of the Triumph Sports Owners group were in Warrnambool earlier this week to present a $1500 cheque to SWH community partnerships manager Suzan Morey. The funds were raised during the group’s 2023 National Rally, held late October, which included a ‘show and shine’ event at Lake Pertobe. “Our rally also included a reverse raffle and the winners of that also donated that money back to this appeal which was wonderful,” Triumph Sports Owners group life member Catherine McDonald said. “This (hospital) is a wonderful facility, offering vital services to the community and we’re proud to be able to make this donation.” In accepting the cheque on Monday afternoon, Ms Morey said the donation was greatly appreciated. “This money will go a long way towards the $9000 we need to raise for toys and play therapy equjpment for our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service,” Ms Morey said. “We are very grateful to the group for this incredibly generous donation towards our appeal. “We’re hoping to hit our target before Christmas so that we can kick off 2024 on such a positive note.”

New technology to seal McGregors Road

Work to resurface the road using an innovative seal treatment that includes fibreglass strands began earlier this week. A recent assessment of McGregors Road showed that it was nearing the point at which it would need to be a full pavement rehabilitation rather than simply resealing using traditional methods. “Full pavement rehabilitation is a much more involved, costly and disruptive process compared to road

resealing,” Warrnambool City mayor Cr Ben Blain said. “McGregors Road had reached a point where it was a suitable candidate for this relatively new technique that uses fibreglass threads to create a strong and crackresistant membrane. “While this technique is new to Warrnambool it has been used successfully elsewhere including on regional and metropolitan roads.” Cr Blain said a smooth and safe surface for vehicles was the main priority but council needed also to look at efficiency gains to provide ratepayers with value for

money. “We anticipate that not only will it deliver savings but it will be a solid road surface that may extend the life of the road for another decade,” Cr Blain said. “If this road technology works in Warrnambool as well as it has in other locations we’ll consider expanding its use where appropriate.” The reseal was expected to be completed by the end of this week, weather permitting. The section of McGregors Road to be resurfaced is between Derby Street and Tozer Road.

Give the gift of reading

THE Warrnambool Library is spreading the spirit of Christmas by helping to get new books to local children from vulnerable families in time for Christmas.

Residents are encouraged to share the joy of giving by leaving a new book under the Christmas tree at the library. “Every child deserves a book and this is something that the Warrnambool Library is doing to promote that love of reading,” Warrnambool Library programs and partnerships coordinator Jackie Elliott said. “There’s some fantastic information around that shows three year-olds who can name a favourite book are known to be better readers at age seven. “Children who were exposed to more storybooks showed a greater inclination to read for pleasure and in turn, had more advanced literacy skills as adolescents.” She said that all books suitable from babies through to teenagers would be gratefully accepted, but library staff were happy to help anyone looking for ideas. “We’re definitely looking for more picture books and middle-grade books,” she said. “Local authors are terrific as well as any Indigenous authors, we love having that type of thing to give to the families in the Warrnambool community.” Books will be accepted until Saturday, December 16.

Cafe owner living his dream WARRNAMBOOL local Jayden Walder is living his dream. Ever since entering the hospitality industry as a 16 year-old, Jayden has longed to own a café. Six months ago those dreams came to fruition and he is now the proud owner of Neon Café and Bar in the heart of Warrnambool. “My end goal was always to have my own business, so I’m very proud of Neon,” Jayden said. “But I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the help of family; for which I’m eternally grateful. “Between renovations, menus, painting and helping with funds to bring

this all together, especially in the initial few months and helping with front of house they were amazing which enabled me to focus on my food.” Jayden has worked as a chef at cafes and pubs across the district for years and is now able to bring that experience and knowledge to Neon Café and Bar. “I love working in hospitality; meeting new people each day and cooking meals that are tasty, nutritious and affordable.” The menu at Neon offers a range of dishes to suit all tastes, with some especially for children, and the slice and savoury cabinet offers a selection of tasty cakes and slices perfect for morning or afternoon tea – or a quick snack on the run. The big ‘Neon breakfast’, along with the

smashed avocado, are currently among the most popular of the breakfast dishes while the brisket burger and slides are always popular among diners for dinner. While Neon is fully licensed, there is also a tempting mocktails menu that is sure to satisfy. Conveniently located opposite the Civic Green at 50 Liebig Street, Neon Café and Bar is open from 8am until 2pm Tuesday to Sunday. It also reopens for dinner from 5.30pm until late Tuesday to Saturday. Take-away is available and delivery can be arranged within the Warrnambool township. Spotlight on Port Fairy Carols by the Bluestone

THE rain held off and the Christmas spirit shone through last Friday night at Port Fairy’s ‘Carols by the Bluestone.’ Children from Port Fairy Consolidated and St Patrick’s schools joined together for an evening of celebration and song. Families were decked out in Christmas attire and many spread out picnic blankets and set up folding chairs in anticipation. The carols included crowd favourites Silent Night, Jingle Bell Rock, Last Christmas and I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas. Santa and Mrs Claus made a special appearance along with musical personality Michael Ferguson. “We were very happy and proud to be able to help continue the Christmas spirit of kindness and giving within the Port Fairy community by hosting this special evening of carols for the children and their families,” Port Fairy Consolidated principal Kate Anderson said.

Mini golf fundraiser a hit

MINI golf enthusiasts from across the district enjoyed a family fun day in Warrnambool last weekend – and helped raise vital funds for Muscular Dystrophy Awareness in the process.

The Gillin Boys Foundation hosted a special mini golf family fun day at Warrnambool’s ‘Mini Golf By the Sea’ on Saturday afternoon. Along with the chance to try their luck on the course, visitors also enjoyed a sausage sizzle, coffee van, face painting and the opportunity to take a close look at a newly-designed two-seater Sprintcar on display. Proceeds from the event will go towards finding a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

FOUR Lions from the Port Fairy club enjoyed Macarthur’s Christmas dinner at Milltown last Sunday.

The Macarthur clubs enjoys a close association with Port Fairy-Belfast, having charted that club in 1977 and continues to share a close liaison in many local projects including helping out at the folk festival and Moyneyana. Milltown is the site of the renowned Milltown Wood Days, which combined the annual visit to the club by District Governor Les Cropely. Lions from Merino and Hamilton also attended what was a very pleasant picnicstyle meeting exemplifying the continuing fellowship of Lions. Warrnambool Lions Club has also been very busy supporting both the Carols by Candlelight at Dennington and a skin screening exercise at Timboon. The club’s Christmas cake sales and Lion information site at Gateway Plaza has also kept members on their toes. Harry Membery from the Allansford and District Primary School was awarded with

a certificate by Lion Ken Peddle for winning the local section of the international peace poster contest. Harry’s entry will go on to the next phase of the competition. Thanks to our column in last week’s Warrnambool Weekly the Port Fairy Belfast Lions Club has already received 150 pairs of used spectacles for onforwarding to their Brisbane centre where the lenses are re-ground and distributed to needy areas nationally and internationally.] It is hoped that 500 pairs will be collected before the spectacles are despatched in early January. Spectacles can be also left at the Christmas hamper raffle conducted in Sackville Street as well as with any Lion. A special collection box will be placed at the Nightingale Café, the activity centre for senior citizen activities in the senior citizens hall, from the middle of January. Fifteen entries have been received for the Port Fairy-Belfast Lions Club’s annual art show to open January 27 and certainly exemplifies the amazing talent of our local and district artists. The show will remain open from 10am to 4pm daily until January 6.

A trip to the dairy

YOUNG students from Warrnambool West Primary in the dairy industry; a simulation of delivering a baby calf; School were given a taste of dairy farming during ear-tagging a cow and a run through of fun facts about cows. The farm visit formed part of their inquiry into healthy food a visit to a local farm last Friday. The foundation, year one, two and three students enjoyed a fun, hands-on experience during their trip to Oonagh and Harper Kilpatrick’s dairy property. An early morning visit gave the students an opportunity to see cows being milked on a rotary dairy and then to see how the milk was collected by a tanker each day. The children then rotated through six different activities, provided by local businesses and agencies. This included tasting delicious yoghurt, cheese and milk from Bega cheese; learning about the different foods cows eat and how they digest it; the careers and finance involved

and where it comes from this term. The school is incredibly grateful to the Kilpatrick team for arranging such a wonderful experience for its students and also thanks volunteers Debbi Twiss and Samantha Andrews from WESTVIC, farm business consultant John Kane, Shaun Kissick from Bega Cheese, Josh from McColl’s Transport, as well as Rebecca Tolman and staff from South-West TAFE. Afterwards, the students were bursting with stories to tell about their experience, having learnt so much about the importance of the dairy industry and how significant it is to the local community.

Twilight market tonight THE inaugural Fairy Street Twilight Market is on tonight (Friday). A new initiative by the Warrnambool City Council, the market will be held at the former Callaghans site on Fairy Street, with many Fairy Street businesses on this block to have extended trading hours for the night. The event will feature market stalls curated by the team who host the Civic Green Christmas Market and the Lake Pertobe Summer Night Market. There will also be food vans, live music, free face painting and special appearances by Santa and his Elf, as well as street performer The Christmas Angel. “This is a really exciting event for Fairy Street and for the wider community,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said. “We’re happy to work with the markets as well as the Fairy Street businesses to put it together. “With the former Callaghans site, we have a great opportunity to make use of a large space to host some of our local makers and creators, as well as bringing more foot-traffic to Fairy Street’s established businesses. “It’s all happening in the lead up to Christmas. In addition to the market, we have Christmas projections on CBD buildings, there’s some really fun interactive Christmas murals you can take your photo with and lots of other things to give the city centre a distinct Christmas vibe.” For up-to-date market announcements or any change to the scheduled events members of the public are encouraged to stay up to date via the Warrnambool City Council Facebook page. Tonight’s market will run from 4pm-7.30pm.

Rodeo draws a crowd WITH increased prizemoney and customdesigned buckles, last weekend’s Warrnambool Rodeo attracted more than 130 competitors from across four states.

An estimated 4000 people flocked to the Warrnambool Showgrounds on Saturday night to enjoy an actionpacked program of events. “They say third time’s a charm and it certainly was on Saturday night,” Jenni Strain, secretary of the Warrnambool Showgrounds Committee said. “The last two years we attracted just over 100 competitors and to have just over 130 this year was amazing. “We increased the prize money and all winners were presented with a Ride Tuff buckle, which are just amazing. It was an absolutely terrific night; you can’t wipe the smile from my face.” For many in the crowd, the Memorial Open Bull Ride,

in honour of local cowboy Sam Daly, was one of the highlights of the night – with two of the 11 entrants making time. “Sam Woodall was the overall winner of that event, with Kelsey Pavlov in second. To have not one, but two riders make time is amazing,” Jenni said. “Sam Daly was a young man who used to work for Woodall’s Rodeo Productions who are big supporters of the event. It is a wonderful tribute and a great honour to win this and we thank both the Woodall and Daly families for their ongoing support.” The evening’s program included junior and senior events in bull riding, saddle bronc, bareback and barrel races. There was also a best little cowboy and cowgirl competition along with crowd giveaways, food stands and trade stalls. The junior bull ride for those aged under 18 years also attracted 11 competitors and added to the excitement of the night. “The program really was a very entertaining one and the pick-up men did an amazing job throughout the night,” Jenni said.

“We’ve had several inquiries about the young man who was injured in the open bareback. He was taken to hospital and underwent surgery for a broken ankle. “I believe he had several screws and a plate inserted and is now recovering which is pleasing to hear. We all wish him well with his recovery.” Results were as follows: Open bull ride – 1st Sam Woodall, 2nd Kelsey Pavlov. Open saddle – 1st Jason Collins, 2nd Corbin Mundy.
