Funds needed for cannon repairs

WarrnamboolWeekly l

THE AL Lane Foundation has committed $10,000 to help repair a World War I howitzer formerly on display at Cannon Hill.

126 Manifold St, Camperdown. 3260 Telephone (03) 5593 1888 TO CONTACT US

Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain has urged any individual or group keen to see the cannon return to public display to pledge their support. Work to investigate the repair of the gun is progressing, with the gun moved indoors and a committee formed to determine the best way forward. This was one of two artillery pieces removed from Cannon Hill in 2020 for repairs. Volunteers were able to repair the first gun and it was returned to Cannon Hill, however the second was deemed to need more extensive work. “Thank you to the AL Lane Foundation for their contribution to kick-start this project,” Mayor Ben Blain said. “In order to know how far we can go with the repairs, we need to know the level of funding available, so if there were any groups out there that wanted to play a part in getting this cannon back on public display, please get in touch with us. “Additionally, if there were any individuals with the skills and knowledge to lend a hand, we want to work together to try and make this cannon as good as it can be. “It’s really positive to have a committee together of council staff, RSL members and other enthusiasts to look at the gun and see what we can do. “I think it’s exciting for the whole Warrnambool community. This cannon is a community asset and it’s good to be working together as a community to move forward.

A committee has been formed to investigate repairs needed on this World War 1 cannon. 2023E “And on behalf of the Warrnambool community I’d also like to once again thank everyone who contributed to the repair of the first gun.” Warrnambool RSL member Doug Heazlewood has joined the committee, and agreed that a collaborative approach was best. “All the people who walked past (the guns at Cannon Hill) and didn’t do anything have to take some of the responsibility,” he said. “I think it’s a very worthwhile cause.” He said that the guns were used in battle

Students light up the city HAVE you seen Bruce Willis saving a Christmas elf on top of the Fletcher Jones Silver Ball? One Day Studios has teamed up with the Warrnambool City Council to brighten up the CBD this festive season with a series of Christmas-themed projections, including a local take on what some consider to be a classic Christmas film - Die Hard. About 20 One Day Studios students worked on a series of stop-motion animations which are being beamed onto iconic buildings throughout December. One Day Studios co-founder Gareth Colliton said the students had a lot of creative licence when coming up with their animations, with Spiderman and gremlins featuring alongside more traditional Christmas characters like Santa Claus, with a few Warrnambool icons included too. “John McClane is the hero of Christmas, right? Any Christmas movies we thought were fair game. But also Warrnambool’s classic characters, penguins, maremmas, whales,” he said. “Last year looking at the

projections that were already really spectacular, we were thinking of how we could make them more locally focused. “The students were making stop motion videos this year so we thought we’d pitch it to council and see if they liked the idea. “The projectors are amazing. Everyone loves a good light show.” One Day Studios student Kai Barclay, 12, said he was excited to see his creation on public display and he had a lot of fun making it. “It was fun checking how it would build up and seeing it get better and better,” he said. “The hardest part was when you were moving them and if they fell apart, then you’d have to stick them back together and re-set up the scene exactly like it was. “It took roughly three hours. It’s pretty short but I’m pretty proud of it.” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said he was delighted with how the city centre is looking ahead of Christmas. “How good does the CBD look? There are so many different elements that come

funding these projectors via the Safe Outdoor Activation Fund. “These projectors are the gift that keeps on giving. “This is the second Christmas that we’ve been able to use them to add to the vibrancy of our city centre in the lead up to Christmas, and we were

also able to make use of them for our Solstice event in the Botanic Gardens. “Because they’re councilowned and portable, there’s a lot of flexibility on how we use them, so we’re open to any businesses who might like to host a projection in the future.”

Secure power supply during emergencies

THE Port Fairy community will now have access to a secure power supply during prolonged power outages in emergencies. As part of the state government’s Energy Resilience Systems program, two sites in Moyne Shire will receive new advanced backup energy systems. These systems are now being installed at both the Port Fairy Showground and Mortlake Recreation Reserve. Each system includes solar panels, batteries and back-up diesel generators, and will be in place ahead of the summer bushfire season. Moyne mayor Cr Ian Smith said the two sites would act as hubs for the local communities, providing a space to cook meals, charge devices and find information. “These systems boost our electricity network and community resilience during emergencies,” Cr Smith said. “We will be better equipped to handle extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent and severe. “The systems will also provide the ongoing benefit of providing cheap renewable energy to community buildings year-round.” The Energy Resilience Systems program is funded by the Victorian State Government.

More trees Council to continue home care for Moyne

AFTER an extensive five-month review, Moyne Shire councillors have voted to continue providing home and community MORE than 8000 new trees will care services. Mayor Cr Ian Smith said federal government reforms be planted across Moyne Shire in the sector promoted council to complete a full review thanks to the latest round of of services to get a clearer picture of how changes council’s Community Carbon might impact operations. “We needed to be sure that the services we were Offset Program. Earlier this week councillors approved more than $23,000 in grants to assist with planting of trees on public and private land across the municipality. Mayor Cr Ian Smith said the program had been running since 2010 as a way to offset emissions from council’s light fleet. “We started the program in 2010 and once these trees are in the ground, more than 68,000 new trees have been planted in every corner of the shire. “That equates to approximately 13,700 tonne of non-verified carbon offsets over the seedlings’ lifespan. “These new plantings will provide a further 1600 tonne of non-verified carbon offset, taking the program’s grant total to over 76,000 tonnes.” Cr Smith said it was a practical way to offset carbon emissions, while providing other benefits. “I’ve visited a farm in Nirranda where they used their grant allocation to create shelter belts which provide protection from the weather for stock – but also important native habitat and food sources for birds and other wildlife,” he said. “It’s a really simple program that delivers big benefits across a range of areas and I’m pleased to be able to award these grants and look forward to seeing projects come to life.”

delivering were still going to be able to be delivered in a way that best suited our clients in the face of these reforms,” Cr Smith said. “Continuing these services provides ongoing security for over 500 existing clients and our hard working and dedicated teams who are out and about every day providing quality care and services for people in our community. “We now have a clearer picture on how these changes will impact our service delivery and we are confident we can continue in the space and possibly even grow it.” The review involved five community forums, surveys, engagement with other key stakeholders and internal discussions with staff. Cr Smith said the feedback provided showed clients valued locally-based service provision. “The federal government changes to the sector meant it was important to have a good look at our services and make sure they could still meet the needs of the community, who told us they value highly the services our teams provide and the importance of having a local service provider,” Cr Smith said. “The review found we can continue in this space and with the addition of home care packages the service won’t run at a loss and can possibly grow. “This is a great result for our clients, our staff and the wider Moyne community – our trusted and locally based team will continue to provide high quality care in home.” Cr Smith said teams would now work on optimising services in preparation for the roll-out of the federal government’s reforms in 2027, with implementation to be evaluated in a year.

Home and community care services will continue to be offered by Moyne Shire council, helping people to remain in their homes as long as possible. 2023E

Since 1999 council has used the fund as a way of supporting local groups to make Warrnambool a vibrant and inclusive city for residents and visitors. “Thank you to all of the groups who applied for funding this year,” Warrnambool mayor Ben Blain said. “The community development fund is a way for council to give back to local groups and volunteers, and it’s encouraging to see such a wide range of projects put forward. “From new toys at the toy library, to accessibility improvements at the gem club, a program at Warrnambool Table Tennis to better engage with women, girls and people with a disability, and there was also funding for a blister pack recycling initiative at Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybreak – these are all things that add to the richness of the fabric of Warrnambool. “We didn’t use our full allocation of funding this year, so we had the potential to provide even more support to local clubs and groups.” Heading into next year, Cr Blain encouraged every local group to have a look at the criteria and think about how a grant of up to $5000 could help them. “As you can see by the variety of projects funded, there’s a lot of freedom in the application criteria for clubs to choose a project that suits their needs, so we’d love to see even more applications next year.” Grant categories include sport and recreation, culture and arts, as well as environment and sustainability.

Speed and load limits reduced on bridge MOTORISTS are advised that the speed and load limits on Port Fairy’s Gipps Street Bridge have been lowered. Moyne Shire Council has lowered the speed limit on the bridge from 50 km/h to 40km/h and has installed advisory signs. Council has also sought permission from the Department of Transport to reduce the load limit from 30 tonnes to 15 tonnes until the bridge replacement is completed. The bridge is checked regularly and remains safe for pedestrians and vehicles. Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said these changes were required to ensure access can be maintained as the bridge approaches the end of its serviceable life. “Council teams are continuing to plan for

a full replacement of the bridge in 2025, with concept designs for a new concrete bridge complete,” Cr Smith said. “This will feature improved pedestrian and bicycle access and applications have been made to a number of government programs for funding to assist with the replacement.” Cr Smith said talks were underway with agencies whose service infrastructure was located on the bridge. The metal plates on the bridge will also remain until the bridge is replaced as they are ensuring it remains open to vehicles. “Consultation with community and businesses will begin next year on the construction timetable. “The bridge is nearing the end of its functional life in terms of what can

continually be renewed.” Cr Smith said the changes don’t mean the bridge is unsafe, council was just taking steps to ensure it remains serviceable for the next year as replacement approaches.

Cr Smith said the community would be kept informed about the bridge replacement via Engage Moyne and council’s regular communications channels.

THE first Thursday in May will again be a public holiday in Moyne Shire next year.

Councillors have once again elected Warrnambool Cup Day as the day the municipality will take in lieu of Melbourne Cup Day. Mayor Cr Ian Smith said the state government gave councils a choice to take a local date of significance instead of the Melbourne Cup. “Since 2009 Moyne has taken the Warrnambool Cup as a public holiday,” he said. “We have chosen this day given the status of the Warrnambool Cup and May Racing Carnival as a major regional event and because of the connections between our communities and services offered in the Warrnambool City Council area. “Warrnambool City Council will also take Warrnambool Cup Day as its holiday and due to the proximity of Warrnambool and the overlap of Moyne residents attending secondary schools, childcare and employment in Warrnambool, it makes sense for us to take it as a public holiday as well.” Council officers will now notify the Minister for Small Business of the decision and ask for it to be placed in the Government Gazette.

Originally started by the Johnson family, then Rob and Kerry Gass, The Bowl is now owned by Andrea Occhipiati and Lucas Reid.

Free movies at Civic Green THIS week marks the premier of the Warrnambool City Council’s new outdoor cinema screen, with Christmas movies to be screened on the Civic Green. Yesterday (Thursday) saw the screening of ‘The Polar Express’ and ‘Fred Claus’ but for those who missed out, the Civic Green will also be the place to be today for an 11am screening of ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ and then ‘Elf’ from 1pm. All movies are free, with no bookings required. Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said council was able to fund the screen via the Victorian Government’s COVIDSafe Outdoor Activation Fund - the same fund used to purchase the projectors currently beaming Christmas imagery onto CBD buildings. “We’ve been able to use this funding to invest in really versatile pieces of equipment that we will get a lot of use out of for years to come,” Cr Blain said. “Staff completed the final tests of the new outdoor screen last week, so we thought ‘why not put it to use straight away and play some Christmas movies?’” “Christmas movies are one of the best ways to get into the spirit of the season and we’re really happy to be able to hold these screenings and invite everyone to come along and join the fun. “The weather forecast looks good, so bring your picnic rug or camping chairs and settle in on the Civic Green for a classic Christmas movie on the big screen.” To find out more about everything happening in Warrnambool, visit whatson. warrnambool.vic.gov.au.

Bunch it up into a ball to help keep it together,” he said. “It’s a timely reminder that packaging foam, known as polystyrene, can’t go in your recycling bin. It might have a small triangle on it that people sometimes think is a recycling symbol, but it’s just a resin code.” And for residents who have a natural Christmas tree rather than a plastic one, these can be dropped off for free at the ®ŸNj ǼȖNj¯ Ř_ ǼŸƼ _NjsǣǣÞض Community Garden on the corner of Grieve and Derby streets from December 26 until January 28. New direction for Lighthouse Theatre WARRNAMBOOL’s Lighthouse Theatre will enjoy a change of direction for its 2024 performance season. To be renamed ‘Lighthouse Theatre Presents 2024,’ the new name for the upcoming season will reflect the everbroadening nature of the performances, events and experiences the venue will bring to its patrons. Lighthouse Theatre Presents provides an opportunity for the venue to present greater experiences, to reflect the world around us. “We hope that this new program brings bigger and better experiences for the community at the Lighthouse Theatre,” service manager Xavier Dannock said. The program, which was recently launched on-site, started with a guided tour before patrons sat back and celebrated ‘everything good about the world’ with Gillian Cosgriff as she performed her award-winning and heartfelt solo comedy show “Actually, Good”. “As we look ahead, we are crafting an environment that allows you to imagine yourself on stage - a place where your identity, alongside those of your friends and the broader world, is reflected,” Mr Dannock said. “This space serves as a collective canvas for sharing stories, inviting the community to embark on emotional journeys through the narratives presented.” Mr Dannock believes the upcoming performances in 2024 aspire to provide enriching experiences, inviting audiences to revel in the joy of live performances. “Lighthouse Theatre Presents is an exciting mix of the best performing arts on offer, and we have ensured there is

something for everyone. “Everyone is welcome at the Lighthouse Theatre, and we strive to provide the most accessible, welcoming and safe space, something that is at the core of our values.” Lighthouse Theatre Presents 2024 welcomes favorites such as the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow, Bell Shakespeare, Opera Australia and Inventi Ensemble with all new productions. Families will be delighted by the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s How to Catch a Star, which will leave audiences of all ages filled with hope and optimism. They will also love The Gruffalo, which will take the littlest audience members on a daring adventure through the deep, dark wood in a magical, musical adaptation of the classic picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. An essential for families will be Tempo, a Flying Fruit Fly Circus production, which features an extraordinary ensemble of young performers who not only possess dazzling circus skills but also play instruments. “We have incredible female talent coming to the Lighthouse Theatre next year including, in March, the Coal Miner’s Daughter, who will grace the stage and celebrate the incredible life of the late great Loretta Lyn,” Mr Dannock said. The most loved vocal duo of their generation, Vika and Linda Bull, will also be coming in early 2024. Experience an extraordinary musical journey that showcases the immense talent and innovative creations of celebrated, ARIA-nominated, and awardwinning Indigenous singer and songwriter, Emma Donovan. Get ready for an unforgettable

performance by the one and only Ella Hooper. Following the triumphant success with the chart-topping band Killing Heidi, Ella embarked on an exhilarating solo career and her new album marks an exciting new chapter in her artistic journey, revealing the depths of her profoundly personal song writing. A cabaret performance by local performer Anna-Lee Robertson is also scheduled for later in the year. “If you would like to be entertained, embark on a magical journey with Australia’s cherished power couple, Frankie J Holden and Michelle Pettigrove, as they take centre stage to celebrate the rich tapestry of life and love in their show How Sweet It Is,” Mr Dannock said. “This dynamic duo, renowned performers and real-life partners, seamlessly blend music and laughter, offering an authentic and entertaining performance that transcends the ordinary.” Another not to missed show will be Two Grands, Four Hands! Indulge in the exhilarating experience of witnessing two virtuoso pianists captivate audiences at the grand pianos in a dazzling showdown. Lighthouse Theatre Presents 2024 will also feature four matinees throughout the year that are delightful, fun, musical and at an accessible time and price. This will comprise I Love Paris, The Lloyd

Webber Evolution, Promises Promises – The Music of Burt Bacharach and Hal David and a Christmas performance – ‘Tis The Season. If drama is more your thing, don’t miss the comedy/drama NEWK, The John Newcombe Story, coming in February. NEWK traces the life of the great Australian tennis champion of the 1960s and 70s, John Newcombe, and is performed by Damian Callinan. Lost in Shanghai, Past the Shallows and a show for the whole family, The Peasant Prince, will also feature in 2024. A great show for all ages is an Erth Production, ARC, which will showcase exquisite puppetry, an enigmatic host, audience interaction and a world of rare and exotic animals. Next year’s season will also see continued accessibility services for patrons, with three performances accompanied by live Auslan interpretation. With so much on offer, it is worth considering a 2024 membership to the theatre that provides you access to discounted tickets, suppers, meet and greets, deferred payment options, 10% off bar purchases and special pre-sale bookings. Vehicle damage on the rise

THE number of Victorian drivers seeking compensation for damage to their vehicles caused by ‘dodgy roads’ has soared 414 per cent in just three years.

New data provided in State Parliament shows that claims for compensation rose from 298 in 2020/21 to 755 the following year, and a staggering 1532 in 2022/23. Alarmingly, just four of those claims were assessed as payable. It follows a 45 per cent cut in the road maintenance budget since 2020, including a 25 per cent cut this year. Member for South West Coast, Roma Britnell MP, said the data was further evidence of the dire state of roads in Victoria. “The Victorian Labor Government’s cuts to road maintenance is allowing the roads to further deteriorate, resulting in significant damage to wheels, tyres and other parts of vehicles,” Ms Britnell said. “With a minimum threshold for the cost of damages set at $1580, most claims are not even considered. “South West Coast families contact me regularly to share their horror stories about roads and the abysmal system of compensation overseen by the roads minister. “If the State Labor Government actually fixed our terrible roads, Victorian families and businesses would not be forced to suffer financially and be in danger when travelling on our roads.”

The four-wide always gets spectators on their feet before the start of the A-Main. From left: Grant Anderson, Jy Corbet, Jock Goodyer and Alex Orr. 2023D

Action aplenty at Premier GRANT Anderson held his nerve from the front row to win his second Max’s Race at Sungold Stadium Premier Speedway last weekend. The experienced Albury driver survived a war of attrition to win the 30-lap A-Main feature, holding off Warrnambool’s Jamie Veal and Queensland’s Jy Corbet. “I have to say I’m pretty happy right now. Anytime you can win here is a good night for sure,” Anderson said. “It was a bit tough out there and it was really fast on that surface. They do a great job here working with this track but at the moment it’s hard work. No one’s making this place be like it is deliberately. “I'm pretty happy tonight- I've come out on top.” From position two, was next to polesitter Alex Orr, who set a blistering pace in the eight-lap dash earlier in the night and led the feature early. The carnage came on the opening lap, with Tasmanian driver Tate Frost crashing out in front of the grandstand. Moments later, heartbreak for Orr as he crashed into the turn one wall and Corbet inherited the lead ahead of Anderson and reigning Max's Race winner Jock Goodyer, before Anderson made his move to grab the lead with 20 laps to run. James McFadden, fresh home to Australia from his

American racing season, was the next casualty, crashing hard into the turn three wall after Brock Hallett’s right rear tyre made contact with McFadden’s left rear wheel. McFadden was out and Hallett continued on. Up front it was still Anderson leading and he was in control and running a strong racing line before Goodyer hit the wall with 14 laps to run. Hallett was forced to the back with car issues, with 11 laps remaining. The eye-catching drivers were Veal who came from eighth to grab second, American star Carson Macedo who was fifth after winning the B-Main and Corey McCullagh who finished sixth in his first race back for nearly 18 months. Anderson kept a steely resolve and didn’t flinch under pressure from two-time Max’s Race victor Veal to claim the win and the $7000 prizemoney. The beautifully hand-carved wooden V5 trophy was presented to him by Max Dumesny. “It’s pretty cool to get this trophy off a legend of the sport,” Anderson added. “We were lucky enough to win it a few years ago (2019) so to get another one is awesome; it’s world class competition here.” Earlier in the night, McFadden, Orr, Anderson and Daniel Pestka took out each of the four heat races,

James McFadden’s hopes of a podium finish in the A-Main also came to an end when he hit hard into the turn three wall. 2023D

while Veal and Corbet posted the fastest quick times of flight one and two respectively, with times of 10.302 and 10.345seconds. The third round of the Belkblast Protective Coatings Southern Pro Late Model Series saw former Australian champion Callum Harper clinch the 12-lap A-Main with a flag-to-flag drive from Chevy Edwards and Peter Nicola. An elated Chevette Muir of Kyneton scored an emotional victory in the Formula 500 Junior Scramble. From grid position nine she drove a calculated and patient race to snatch the lead from Aston Rodriguez who drove impressively to lead for 10 laps from pole position. With five laps remaining, Muir seized the lead, only to encounter a yellow flag, requiring her to do it all again as she was put back to second. With two laps remaining she held her ground and made a decisive pass on Rodriguez, with Hugo Chivell following her from position 10. The pair crossed the finish line in that order, with Rodriguez third. Zac Stevens was solid in fourth place, with Evie Bell fifth. Action will return to Premier Speedway on Monday January 1, 2024 with the final round of the Clay-Per-View Speedweek for Sprintcars – with Street Stocks as the support class.

Tate Frost’s night came to an abrupt end on the opening lap in Saturday night’s A-Main. 2023D

NESTLES vice-captain Mikaela Doran has made history in the Beyond Bank Women’s Division as the first female cricketer to reach 1000 runs. The talented all-rounder smashed her way to an unbeaten 49 runs from 48 balls against Hawkesdale last weekend. Doran’s innings included three boundaries and contributed to her side’s round eight victory. Nestles finished on 3/107 in response to Hawkesdale’s 2/106 (from their 20 overs). Opener Marnie Beks was also strong for Nestles, hitting 28 from 34 balls which included two boundaries. With just two rounds remaining after the Christmas break, Brierly Northern Raiders currently sit on top of the ladder, followed by Allansford Panmure, Hawkesdale and Nestles rounding out the top four.
