Neville Guthridge and his team at the Koroit Cherry Farm are working hard to ensure they produce the freshest, most succulent fruit possible for their loyal customers. “We take great pride in our work and ensure customers have access to fruit straight off the farm,” Neville said. “We pick the cherries in the morning and by afternoon they’re on the shelf ready to buy; you can’t get any fresher than that.” Adding to the quality, the fruit is grown in the rich volcanic soils of Tower Hill free from pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. Every piece is hand picked and packaged to achieve premium quality, providing many health benefits. “Our fruit is bursting with vitamins and antioxidants and we believe

local produce tastes better and IS better,” Neville said. The Koroit Cherry Farm originated some 17 or so years ago on a six acre property at 549 Koroit-Port Fairy Road. Neville took over the business three years ago and is joined by Koroit local Jordan O’Keefe and a small band of workers. “Jordan looks after the orchard and our team of pickers and packers,” he said. “We have 1200 cherry trees in 16 different varieties and they all come in at various stages which keeps us busy. “We’re picking daily now and that will continue right through Christmas

depending on the weather. Cherries don’t like too much rain because they’ll split and spoil.” Last weekend’s downpour saw minimal damage to the current crop but Neville assures customers the current season has, so far, been a good one – which is great news for cherry lovers. “If we get a good early morning pick our doors are open from around 9am and we sell until about 6pm if we don’t sell out earlier.” So if you’re looking for the freshest and tastiest cherries this season, head to the Koroit Cherry Farm. JP hours extend to meet demand DUE to an increase in demand from the community, the justice of the peace (JP) ‘sign-in centre’ at Warrnambool police station has extended its hours.

For well over two decades, the sign-in centre has provided a free JP service to Warrnambool and district residents. The service, manned by a team of dedicated volunteers, helps to alleviate the pressures and demands of the service placed on other providers such as police officers and pharmacists. “By running this sign-in centre at the police station we are helping to ease the workload off others in the district, which then frees them up to do their primary roles,” JP and volunteer at the centre, Bernie Reid said. “We have been offering this service each weekday between 12noon and 2pm but we’ve found there is also high demand for an after-hours service.” In order to meet the demand, the sign-in centre will now be open between 4.30pm and 6.30pm every Tuesday and Thursday. At the centre, a JP will be on hand to certify a true copy of an original document or witness an affidavit for use in court, a Power of Attorney, statutory declaration or a medical treatment decision maker form. “JPs provide a vital community service and we all take great pride in being able to help people in our community and to do so at no cost,” Mr Reid said. “People don’t need to make an appointment they can just pop in and see us at the police station anytime we’re open. It’s a case of first in first served so there may be a wait but that’s not usually very long.”

Bernie Reid is happy to see the ‘sign-in centre’ hours extended at Warrnambool police station. 2023D

Great tribute to a great man NOT even Sunday’s cool and overcast weather could dampen the spirits of the large crowd that gathered to honour and celebrate the life of local ‘legend’ Clinton Hall. For the second year, Hally’s Run/Walk was again a huge success, with just over 300 participants turning out at Lake Pertobe on Sunday to take part in the event. Described as a “great man, athlete and devoted dad who was loyal to friends and family” Clinton sadly passed away suddenly at home on July 26, 2022 at the age of 43. The annual run/walk, instigated last year by Clinton’s best mate Jake Rhodes, raises funds for his three children along with an annual South West Sport ‘Clinton Hall Excellence in Sport’ award. “The event was again a huge success

and we were thrilled with the number of participants, which was on par with the inaugural event last year,” Jake said. “It’s great to see the community get behind this, to show their support for Clinton’s family and to honour his memory. “He (Clinton) was a great bloke who was admired and respected by many. He was a true athlete, a premiership player with the South Warrnambool footy club, a former president at Dennington and was always happy to give back to the community.” While money raised on the day will, in part, go towards school fees, sporting and other costs for his children, funds will also be used for the Excellence in Sport award in conjunction with South West Sport. “Last year we were able to present four award participants with money towards sporting costs and I’m confident that

will happen again as a result of last weekend’s event,” Jake said. Entrants last Sunday chose to run or walk either a three or six kilometre course and raffles and spot prizes also formed part of the day’s celebrations. Results from the event were as follows: Six kilometre: Women – 1st Harriet Aggett 24.52, 2nd Rylee Foreman 26.31, 3rd Alicia Boyd 27.11. Men – 1st Tommy Hynes 20.48, 2nd Jackson Coates 21.09, 3rd Ben Kilday and Sam Edney 22.32. Three kilometre: Men – 1st Archie Hollow 10.30, 2nd Jarrod Gleeson 10.55, 3rd Colby Jackson 10.56. Women – 1st Molly McNeil 11.33, 2nd Ester Gleeson 11.50, 3rd Zara Hampton 13.10.

rear-end collisions, which could be due to a variety of reasons including tailgating, the front driver not breaking in time or the rear driver accidentally pressing the accelerator. “In addition to the obvious safety reasons, motorists should also remember that in the event of a collision, it’s often the motorist who runs into the back of another vehicle that’s at fault from an insurance perspective,” Mr Lynch said. “The at-fault driver may be required to pay the excess on the policy, which will depend on what the policy holder has chosen.” Mr Lynch also pointed out the aggressive and intimidating nature of tailgate driving, and what motorists should do when they encounter it. “Being tailgated can be intimidating and can divert the concentration of a motorist, resulting in collisions or leading to unsafe driving speeds,” Mr Lynch said. “While some drivers may be tempted to box the tailgater in and even tap on their brakes to send a message, it’s simply never worth the risk to put yourself in harm’s way. “We recommend that if you’re being tailgated or you’re uncomfortable with the proximity of the vehicle behind you, stay calm, maintain a safe speed, prioritise safety, focus on the road ahead and move over to let them pass when it’s safe to do so.”

This program is an important part of the Lions’ world-wide focus on eyesight. With more than 53,000 Australians suffering from blindness or vision loss nationally, Lions clubs are constantly involved in Save Sight programs. This includes public and school screenings that have detected many

Council welcomes resident feedback The platform will be a one-stop location for residents to share their ideas, provide feedback and to stay-up-to-date with major projects. Engage Moyne allows residents to ask questions, provide their ideas and have their say on policy, procedures and to receive updates on issues that are important to them. Mayor Cr Ian Smith said the new platform was simple to use and was another tool council would use to connect with

the community. “Residents can register and create an account which will allow them to leave comments, participate in surveys, share their ideas and even upload photos,” Cr Smith said. “They will also be able to join a mailing list to receive notifications about issues they care about and sign-up to follow projects to receive updates. “Engage Moyne is going to be a great tool to keep our community informed and will form a key part of council’s wider community engagement methods.”

Have your say on foreshore plan

WARRNAMBOOL City Council is encouraging community input into the future of the Warrnambool foreshore.

Residents are welcome to put forward their ideas and thoughts about the foreshore as part of council’s ‘big picture’ plan, the Warrnambool Foreshore Framework Plan. Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said the plan would consider the community’s views and other existing plans, such as the Port of Warrnambool Master Plan, to create an overall vision for the foreshore. “This is a much-loved feature of Warrnambool that is cherished by local people and visitors to Warrnambool,” Cr Blain said. “It’s a tremendous community asset and an important area economically. “We need to make sure it remains the special place that it is and to do that we’re

developing a plan for the whole foreshore precinct.” The foreshore precinct, which is Crown land (owned by the Victorian Government) sits within an area to the south of Pertobe Road between the outlet of the Merri River at Stingray Bay to the west and the Flume access point off Merri Street to the east. The framework plan will consider social, economic and environmental values of the precinct. It will be informed by a multi-stage community and stakeholder consultation, existing conditions analysis, and issues and opportunities assessment. The environmental landscape context will be an important influence on the development of the plan. People can share their thoughts through an online survey at www.yourwaywarrnambool. com.au.

Council’s project management office will use the platform to provide updates on key projects, including documents, timelines and progress reports. Community consultation on council policy, plans and procedures will also be conducted through the platform using a range of tools like surveys, maps, image upload and comment boards. The platform is live now at engage.moyne.vic.gov.au and residents are encouraged to register an account to have full access to the platform.

Leila’s name shone bright at the ball. 2023E

Community spirit shines bright IN a shining display of generosity and community spirit, the Leila Rose Foundation’s annual Christmas Ball raised an impressive $58,000.

Held last month, the ball proved a resounding success. The event, a cornerstone of the foundation’s fundraising efforts, promises to make a significant impact on the lives of families coping with the challenges of rare childhood cancers. Established in 2011 by Warrnambool’s Tracy and Andrew Chow, the Leila Rose Foundation stands as a beacon of hope for families navigating the difficult journey of childhood cancer. The foundation’s inception was inspired by the heartbreaking loss of their daughter, Leila, who succumbed to a rare cancer at the tender age of 20 months. The annual Christmas ball, a festive affair that brings the community together for a night of celebration and compassion, is the primary fundraiser for the foundation each year. This year’s event has exceeded expectations, with the astounding sum of $58,000 raised. The generosity displayed is a testament to the community’s unwavering commitment to supporting those facing the unique challenges posed by rare childhood cancers. Tracy and Andrew Chow expressed their gratitude to the attendees and the local community for their overwhelming

support. “We are deeply moved by the outpouring of generosity from our community, given the challenges people are facing this year,” Ms Chow said. “The funds raised at the Christmas ball will go a long way in supporting families dealing with the immense challenges of rare childhood cancers.” Currently, the Leila Rose Foundation provides assistance to 62 families grappling with the emotional and financial burdens of childhood cancer. It is estimated that approximately 300 children in Australia are diagnosed with rare childhood cancers each year, highlighting the critical need for ongoing support and advocacy. Since its inception the Leila Rose Foundation has distributed a total of $1.2 million to 304 families. The funds raised at the ball will play a crucial role in expanding the foundation’s reach and offering assistance to more families in need. “Our goal is to one day be able to help all those families who are facing the devastating impact of rare childhood cancers. Every dollar raised brings us one step closer to that vision,” Andrew Chow said. The Leila Rose Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to all those who attended the event and to the broader community, and the wonderful sponsors and volunteers for their continuous support in the mission to bring hope and assistance to families affected by rare childhood cancers.

Fashions and wine combine on Sunday

ALL roads lead to the Keayang Maar Vineyard this weekend for a celebration of women, wine, fashion and local business.

From 4pm-8pm this Sunday, ‘Fashions on the Lawn’ can be enjoyed at the vineyard. Event host Caitlin Wurlod will welcome guests to her family winery and will treat them to a range of the finest local volcanic wines. The event will include a fashion parade highlighting several pieces from Camperdown-based business, Excuse Me. Owner Kate Kent and her models will showcase the latest in ethical and sustainable women’s fashion and guests will also have the opportunity to explore a pop-up shop featuring all the latest and greatest designs. Both Kate and Caitlin are excited to be involved in ‘Fashions on the Lawn’ and are looking forward to celebrating and promoting incredible local women. “We love each other’s work, we love our work and there is always time for coffee, clothes and wine,” Caitlin said. “So we decided to do something together to celebrate businesses like ours and the fabulous local women who run them.” This event is particularly timely coming into the Christmas period. During this time a huge workload usually falls onto women, with organising Christmas parties, presents and Christmas itself, along with the added chaos school holidays brings.

Keayang Maar Vineyard will host a special ‘Fashion on the Lawn’ event this weekend. 2023E “We want women to be seen and celebrated, especially now, and they deserve a break. “The event promises to be a coming together of friends and fun.” Tickets are now available and transportation can be arranged from

Camperdown, Terang and Warrnambool. Live music will also feature throughout the afternoon courtesy of local artist Clare Younis while guests will be treated to food curated by local mobile Argentinian bakery, Gluten House. Continuing the theme of celebrating

successful local women, Caroline Simmons from Timboon Fine Ice Cream has been chosen as the event’s inspiring MC. For bookings or more information contact Caitlin on 0417 962 991 or email keayangmaar@gmail.com.

Ian Bodycoat from the Port Fairy to Warrnambool Rail Trail praised the support his team had received from the Lions club and the local community in the development of the rail trail. Lions president Jim Madden said his group was “thrilled” with the result and paid tribute to the fundraising efforts of members, including those who helped operate the local op shop alongside many volunteers. Long-time member of the Koroit Lions, Bruce Lowenthal, said the project was “five years in the making” and was completed at a cost of around $140,000. “It’s taken about five years of negotiations with the council for this to come to fruition but we couldn’t be prouder,” Mr Lowenthal said. “It’s a great community facility and a very spacious one. The Lions club raised $80,000, the shire contributed $20,000 and the balance came from various trusts for which we’re all grateful.” As well as providing a community barbecue facility, the

Creek wins Super Smash Sunday

TALENTED Russells Creek batsmen Craig Britten and Hamesh Huffadine have taken out the Northern Raiders’ Super Smash Sunday.

The pair defeated Mortlake’s Lachie Wareham and Todd Lamont to take out the title at Purnim Recreation Reserve last Sunday. Now in its second year under a revamped format, Super Smash Sunday involved 16, two-player teams who compete in a knockout competition, with winning teams advancing to the next round until two teams meet in a grand final. Last weekend’s event attracted players from several Warrnambool District clubs along with others who travelled from as far afield as Colac, Bendigo, Geelong and Melbourne. Overseas players, who originated from India, Canada, West Indies and England who are currently playing in Victoria, also took part. Throughout the 104 overs bowled during the competition, 1060 runs were scored and 40 wickets fell – with 71 runs the highest team score recorded in a four-over allocation.

Action returns to Simpson Speedway ACTION returns to the track at the Simpson Speedway this weekend, with the season opener scheduled for Saturday.

The Victorian Formula 500s will be hitting the track, with both the senior and junior divisions on the program. With nominations still open, it is looking like a very healthy number of cars set to contest their respective series. Tim Rankin is in hot form, coming off a win at

Premier Speedway in the Jack Wilsher Cup. Australia 1 Dylan Beveridge will be out for redemption after pulling in-field leading the race. Hot on their heels will be Liam Russell who came second to Tim Rankin in Jack’s cup. In the juniors, locals Rusty Ponting, coming off a win at Premier, and Hugo Chivell and Zac Steven’s (in hot form from Cobden) will also be in action on the weekend. The Victorian Wingless Sprints will be out to challenge Bullring for round two of the Super

Series. Currently 27 cars have nominated on the AWSR website. Fan favourite class, the Super Rods, are a sure bet to put on some great racing as always. With most of the drivers generally treating this weekend as their first round, there should be plenty of lumpy V8s tipping into turns one and two. Gates open at 4pm with cars on track from 5pm.
