Fairy Street comes alive

WARRNAMBOOL’S Fairy Street came alive last Friday night as crowds enjoyed a market atmosphere.

Shoppers took the opportunity to grab some Christmas bargains, along with a few unique gifts for that ‘hard to buy for’ person. The inaugural twilight market, an initiative of Warrnambool City Council, was held at the former Callaghans site. Several Fairy Street businesses also had extended trading hours for the night. Food vans, live music, free face painting and special appearances by Santa and his elf – along with street performer The Christmas Angel – added to the festive atmosphere.

Neighbourhood House approved for the West WARRNAMBOOL City Council has endorsed the construction of a Neighbourhood House in West Warrnambool’s Pecten Avenue Park. Early next year council will release a tender for the construction of a modular building in the park, with the view to having the new Neighbourhood House operational in late 2024. “This is a great outcome for the West Warrnambool community,” Cr Vicki Jellie said. “For a number of years the Neighbourhood House, which was established in 2019, has operated out of several different venues which was less than ideal. “It’s a credit to the staff and the community that this was able to work as

well as it did. “Now the community can look forward to having a dedicated venue that is located in the heart of West Warrnambool that will allow a range of programs and services to be delivered.” Before making its decision, council undertook an extensive community consultation that included writing to 2200 West Warrnambool residents, conducting a survey and holding focus group meetings. The survey showed about two-thirds of residents supported the proposal to have a Neighbourhood House in Pecten Avenue Park, while the majority of participants in the focus groups also supported this proposal. “Neighbourhood Houses bring people together and create an environment where

people can build social connections as they engage in educational, recreational and support activities,” Cr Jellie said. “During the pandemic we saw how important the Neighbourhood House was in providing support and relief. “They provide services that contribute to the wellbeing of individuals and communities. “With a dedicated home the Neighbourhood House will be able to look at offering activities the community has asked for but were difficult to provide including cooking programs, gardening, printing and photocopying and health and nutrition programs.” The Neighbourhood House program is funded by the Victorian Government’s Department of Families, Fairness and Housing with support from the council.

The Fletcher Jones Family Foundations will provide up to an additional $5000 to the idea with the best potential for a positive social impact. Ian Tebbutt and Jon Wright completed the 10-week Ideas Place Ignite program before finishing the Boot Camp and being chosen to take part in the inaugural pitch night in July this year. Their idea, Citizen Data, was awarded $5000 in funding from the Fletcher Jones Family Foundations. Mr Tebbutt said the pair aims to help smaller organisations, such as community groups, bridge the gap between the large volumes of open data available and the lack of tools available to interpret and use this data. “Everyone knows the data is there, but actually analysing it and getting it to the

point where it’s something useful, is hard. And it’s that hard bit that we want to make easy for community groups,” he said. “One of the great things about The Ideas Place is that it brings together such a mix of people with different talents from around the area. There’s a rich seam of ideas here,” he said. “Initially we were looking at targeting small businesses and councils, then people were saying they’d been writing grants for their community group but could have done with better data - and that was a development that came from the room.” Fletcher Jones Family Foundations executive officer Carly Jordan said while the concept of start-ups were often linked with profit-making business, there are definitely opportunities for ideas with a social purpose. “Citizen Data is a website that we can

Moyne Shire Council Community Update

From the Mayor: Council’s annual budget is one of the key documents we produce and details the allocation of resources that are needed to deliver on the projects and priorities outlined in our guiding document, the council plan. We are now seeking feedback form the community about which of the four pillars in the council plan you think resources should be allocated to. Preparation of the budget is a balancing act of prioritising financial resources to deliver projects, services and programs that meet the community’s needs. We have four pillars identified in our Council Plan and we are asking the community to tell us which of those they think we should focus on. We can use that information to determine the resources required to help us deliver a wide range of services - now and in the future. Community members are invited to take the survey online via engage.moyne.vic.gov.au, or by visiting one of our customer service centres until January 5, 2024. Once we have received that information we will go about preparing the draft budget documents which will be presented at the April 2024 Council meeting and then opened for community feedback. The final budget will then be adopted at the June 2024 Council meeting. At the November meeting of Council, we awarded more than $45,000 in grant funding to 17 local businesses as part of our annual Business Façade Improvement Program. This program help businesses look their best, which helps them attract customers and in turn make out streetscapes more attractive and appealing, encouraging passersby to stop in and making our communities attractive places to live and work. Funding allocated under this round of the program will be used for a range of improvements – from painting, new signage, repairs to window frames and improving outdoor areas. All up, with contributions from businesses owners included, the projects total nearly $150,000. This will be my last column for 2023 and I wish everyone in our community a safe and happy Christmas season. Please stay safe if you are travelling on the roads and I hope you enjoy a break with your friends and family. I look forward to a happy an prosperous 2024. Cr Ian Smith Mayor

Moyne at work As the weather fines up our teams are hard at work across the shire delivering on a range of capital works programs. From road upgrades through to playground installations there is something happening in every corner of the shire. The new playground in Port Fairy’s Baxter Street is almost ready and planning for the new skate park and playground at Russell Clarke Reserve is well underway. A tender has also ben awarded for new lights at the Gardens Oval and Netball Courts with work set to begin in February. In Koroit drainage works in Commercial Road as part of township renewal works are nearing completion, ready for works to begin on a new bluestone footpath on the north side of the street, from IGA to High Street in late January. These works are using the $1 million Council had allocated to the project in the 2020/21 Budget. Council has now been formally invited to submit a full application to the Federal Government’s growing regions fund, seeking $2million in matched funding to complete works on both sides of Commercial Road from High Street to the Commercial Hotel and in High Street from Commercial Road to the botanic gardens. We expect to hear in April if that application is successful. In Macarthur, work is progressing well on the new splashpad, which will be open early in the new year and has been funded through

a contribution from the community, Council and State Government grant funding. On our local road network, crews are making significant upgrades around the shire. Works are currently underway or beginning soon on Korongah North Road, Rosebrook, Willatook-Warrong Road, Warrong, TerangFramlingham Road, Spinks Road, Kirkstall, Minjah-Hawkesdale Road, Codrington Bessiebelle Road and Ritchie Court in Port Fairy. Works are also well underway on the second stage of the Remote Road Upgrade Pilot in the Shire’s north. This significant project funded with an $11.1 million Federal Government Grant and $2.5 million from Council’s budget. Under this project the entire WoorndooChatsworth Road, and the Moyne Shire maintained sections of the HamiltonChatsworth and Chatsworth-Bolac Roads will be upgraded, with single lane sections being widened and damaged surfaces rehabilitated along with drainage upgrades and pavement strengthening. When complete 31.35 kilometres of road will have been upgraded over the two years. The best place to stay up to date with our projects and where you can have your say on policies, documents and initiatives is our new community engagement platform Engage Moyne which is online at engage.moyne.vic. gov.au .

Council awarded the tender for the construction to Duggan Civil in November last year and it is anticipated stage one of works will be completed by the end of June, 2024. “In October 2022 the Victorian Government, through its Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, committed $1 million for the stage one development,” Cr Blain said. “These funds were matched by council for this very exciting project and I’m really looking forward to seeing the new facility completed. It’s certainly an exciting time for the community, particularly for the local sporting clubs including the Warrnambool Rangers Soccer Club and the Brierly Christ Church Cricket Club.” Speaking to the crowd gathered on-site last week,

COMMUNITY input is being sought on Moyne Shire Council’s annual Budget.

Residents are being asked to provide their thoughts on where funding should be allocated. Emotional end to

Local news, local people, local stories

Friday, December 15, 2023

Shear Madness THE tears flowed and weary bodies finally sat after what was a gruelling 24-hour shear-a-thon in Warrnambool last weekend.

The Mifsud trio – dad Roger and sons Corey and Brody – were joined by local shearer and friend Phil Edwards and Nhill brothers Josh and Brandon Bone for an epic 36-hour ‘Shear Madness’ challenge which saw close to 5000 lambs shorn and awareness of mental health raised to new heights. While the final fundraising tally isn’t expected to be known for several weeks, estimations are it will be more than the $75,000 raised last year – with all proceeds this year going to the Let’s Talk Foundation. “Let’s Talk does a wonderful job within the community and mental illness unfortunately affects so many across the district so we thought it appropriate that the proceeds this year go to the foundation,” Corey Mifsud said. “We’re extremely grateful to not only Phil, Josh and Brandon who joined the three of us, but also to our big band of volunteers who worked so hard leading up to the weekend and during the event itself; without them it would not have been possible.” The six men had their bodies and minds put to the test as they made their way through the night and well into late Saturday, spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd and the memories of friends lost. “The shear-a-thon itself was certainly a physical challenge but it’s the emotions that come with it all that really hit home,” Roger Mifsud said late Saturday night. “It’s days and even weeks down the track when it really hits us. So many people are affected by mental health issues and unfortunately too many of us have lost friends and loved ones as a result. “But we all need to talk more, to take note of what’s going on around us, to speak out and seek help if we’re struggling and not be afraid to speak up.” Reflecting on the previous hours late Saturday night, Corey Mifsud said it wasn’t so much the money raised that was important but rather the lives that may be spared. “It’s certainly important that we raise as

much as we can in order for the Let’s Talk Foundation to continue its great work in the community but it’s even more important we do what we can to prevent any more losses,” Corey said. “If you’ve got concerns for any family or friends just check-in. Make sure they’re okay. Personally I’ve gone through some pretty dark times but it’s family and friends, including those at Russells Creek footy club, who’ve helped pull me through and I’m extremely grateful.” Josh and Brandon Nhill said they too were honoured to have been able to take part in such an important event. “We recently lost a mate, Jake, and Roger is a terrific mentor of mine so we didn’t hesitate to become involved,” Josh said. “If anyone on my crew seems down I always ask if they’re okay. If you see a mate going downhill just get on the phone and talk to them; have a chat.” “There’s still not enough talk happening and we need to improve on that,” Brandon added. For the six shearers who spent long hours on the stands, and the group of dedicated rousies and others who worked behind-thescenes during this mammoth challenge, Saturday night’s final countdown was an emotional one. Let’s Talk Foundation spokesperson John Parkinson extended the organisation’s appreciation to all those involved in the event. “As an organisation we want to extend our reach as far as we can and it’s fundraising events such as this that help us to continue to do so,” Mr Parkinson said. “If we continue to do nothing we will continue to lose lives. We can all go away from today with something special that we didn’t have beforehand. “Speak to family and friends. If you see any subtle changes at all don’t ignore it; a problem shared is a problem spared.” The foundation’s community activation lead Abbi Power added to Mr Parkinson’s sentiments. “I can’t say enough how extremely thankful we are to you all – this was a huge effort by so many people and each and every one of you are making a difference,” she said.

Toy run spreads cheer

CHILDREN from disadvantaged families across the western district can now enjoy a special Christmas thanks to the generosity of locals.

For more than 30 years Warrnambool’s Trevor Warnecke and his wife Bonnie have been running a motorcycle toy run in the town. “It’s our way of spreading some Christmas cheer and ensuring children who may otherwise not receive any toys on Christmas day, have something under the tree,” Mr Warnecke said. “The community always gives great support and we collect so many toys it always amazes me.” While the weather may have cancelled last weekend’s motorcycle ride, from Rafferty’s to Lake Pertobe, a crowd gathered at the lake on Saturday afternoon to enjoy a barbecue and hand over the toys to the Salvation Army’s Christmas cheer coordinator, Chris Philpot. “Along with a large number of toys, we also received a $2000 donation from the Warrnambool and District Motorcycle Owners Club for which we’re extremely grateful.” The money will be used to purchase food vouchers for distribution over the festive season.

Pop-up studio for under 25s

MOYNE Shire is on the lookout for young emerging artists wanting to advance their music careers.

The free ‘Moyne Sessions Pop-Up Recording Studio’ and song writing workshops program will work with young artists aged 25 years and under in the recording, production and promotion of

their original music. Each pop-up artist will receive a professionally produced track (s), a video clip of one song, as well as a songwriting intensive and song-polishing workshop. Artists recording their original music will also receive written feedback from Universal Music Group Australia and participants will be mentored by acclaimed songwriter and producer Cameron Deyell, best known for

working with Sia on her Grammy-nominated platinum-selling album ‘This is Acting’. Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said the program is a great opportunity for seasoned musicians or those just starting out. “Cameron brings his experience and expertise to teaching the fundamentals of writing songs that connect, and polishing songs to be ready for recording,” he said.

“If you have songs that are ready to go, this program is for you.” Applications close on Monday, January 8, 2024 and sessions will run between January 22-28. Details and application forms can be found at www.moyne.vic.gov.au/Pop-Up. The program is funded through the Victorian Government FReeZA program.

at ‘Carols at the Stage’ CHRISTMAS was alive and well in Koroit last Sunday as the town gathered to celebrate the festive season.

‘Carols at the Stage’ once again attracted a large crowd thanks to the combined efforts of the Koroit Irish Festival Committee and the Koroit Lions Club. The list of entertainment was a feast of Christmas pleasure for carol goers who happily sang along to favourites such as ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas’, ‘O Holy Night’ and ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’. The selection of hits also included renditions of classic versions of Bing Crosby’s ‘It’s Beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ and Elvis Presley’s ‘Blue Christmas’. The rain held off as children danced throughout the afternoon to the likes of entertainers such as Barbara Brooks, Danielle Stearman and Scott Cain as well as the Holiday Actors’ cast of ‘Legally Blonde’. The children of the Koroit Kindergarten, Koroit’s St Patrick’s School and the South West Coast School of Performing Arts also took to the stage. An Irish Santa arrived on a fire truck, decked out in green. “The carols was such a wonderful community event, highlighting local talent and choirs from the schools and kindergartens,” event coordinator Adele McDonald said. “We’re so fortunate to have such wonderful talent in this town. The Christmas spirit was alive and well with people young and old gathering to enjoy the carols and the community market.”

Tarkyn wins apprentice award

ELECTRICAL apprentice Tarkyn Smith has won this year’s Rotary Club of Warrnambool East ‘First Year Apprentice’ award.

The award, which is given to a first-year apprentice from South West TAFE, was presented to Tarkyn at Rotary’s annual dinner late last month. He was one of eight students to be nominated by their teachers for excellence in their trades and it was his passion and commitment to his studies and work that made him stand out as the winner. Tarkyn works for Day’s Electrical Contracting in Portland and is looking forward to where his career in the electrical industry can take him. Runner-up awards went to cookery apprentice Seth Allen, employed by the Gordon Hotel in Portland, and engineering mechanical trade apprentice Thomas Hutchins, from SWI Engineering. Encouragement awards were presented to cabinet making apprentice Katie Wheldon, carpentry apprentice Michael Grey, plumbing apprentice Sebastian Essenwanger, engineering fabrication trade apprentice Alex Campbell, and automotive apprentice Connor Poole. To select a winner, the eight students were interviewed by the Rotary club. The award was judged on how students were progressing in their course, their willingness to learn, how they positively represented their trade and how they could be encouraged to continue their studies. The judging panel was impressed by all students and their focus on creating successful careers for themselves. Rotary’s youth service director Wendy Mitchem said all the candidates showed incredible enthusiasm in their trades and had bright futures ahead of them. She said it was wonderful to see the apprentices from all different backgrounds all succeeding in their chosen fields. The Rotary Club of Warrnambool East has offered this award for many years and continues to provide ongoing support to training apprentices in the region. South West TAFE chief executive officer Mark Fidge said the organisation was grateful for the partnership with Rotary in supporting apprentices. “It’s great to have the ongoing support of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East and the encouragement this award gives to our first-year apprentices is invaluable,” he said.

Members of the Warrnambool Ukulele Group spent two hours playing some “older music” and then finishing with some Christmas favourites. Group member Anne Rea said passers-by were “absolutely thrilled” to hear music and song as they shopped. “You can just see the smiles on faces as people walked by; it was very rewarding,” Ms Rea said.

The Warrnambool Ukulele Group is an active one in the community, making regularly appearances at each of Warrnambool’s four nursing homes throughout the year, along with special performances at several community events including the Warrnambool Show and the Koroit Irish Festival. “We do get quite a few requests to perform so we do as much as we can,” Ms Rea said.

Welcome to the DECEMBER edition of The Buzz.

Everything about bees and their environment

Wishing you a very sweet festive season from the bees and me! Method • Heat oven to 160C/fan 140C/. Grease (with butter) and line a Ingredients round, deep 20cm cake tin with two layers of baking paper. Tie a For the cake few sheets of newspaper around 225g butter, softened, plus extra for the outside of the tin, level with the greasing top of the baking parchment (this 2 tablespoons brandy or rum stops the cake overcooking around pinch saffron (about 1⁄4 teaspoon the edges). strands)

Honey & Saffron Christmas Cake

225g caster sugar 4 regular-sized eggs 225g plain flour 50g ground almonds 1 teaspoon baking powder 300g raisins 300g sultanas 100g glacé cherries, halved 85g mixed peel 50g whole blanched almonds, roughly chopped 50g whole blanched macadamias, roughly chopped 50g walnut pieces

With Christmas just around the corner, the bees have your festive cake recipe sorted with this delicious honey and saffron cake. It takes the traditional Christmas cake up a notch with the saffron, but still has all the flavours of Christmas without being too heavy. It To soak can be made at the last minute, too. 3 tablespoons brandy or rum 2 tablespoons honey Even better!

• Heat the brandy in a small pan, then add the saffron and leave to infuse off the heat for a few minutes. Put the butter, sugar, eggs, flour, ground almonds, baking powder and a pinch of salt into a bowl, then beat together until creamy and smooth. Mix the fruit, nuts and brandy saffron mixture into the batter and stir well. • Spoon into the prepared tin, smooth the top and make a slight dip in the middle. Bake for 1½ hours, then cover loosely with foil to stop the top over-browning. Turn oven down to 140C/fan 120C/ and cook for 1 hour more until a skewer

inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool gradually in the tin then, while it’s still warm, pierce the cake all over with a skewer. • Mix the brandy and honey together and spoon over the cake until well-moistened. Wrap up the cake well in foil and keep in an airtight container until Christmas, feeding with more honeyed brandy every so often to develop all the delicious Christmas flavours. To serve Slices of the cake can be consumed at room temperature, or warmed gently in the oven or microwave. For an extra layer of decadence, spoon some whipped cream (sweetened with honey) on top, and add some glace cherries or nuts on the side. Enjoy! I look forward to sharing more articles in the new year – all about bees, beekeeping, ecology and sweet treats. Have a safe and happy festive season, from the bees and me

Warrnambool declared refugee welcome zone

WARRNAMBOOL officially became a refugee welcome zone this week.

Monday’s official signing formalised an existing and long-running commitment to building a multicultural and inclusive society. Thomas Lual arrived in Australia as a refugee in 2001 from South Sudan before moving to Warrnambool in 2003 as part of a council project to bring more refugees to the region. “We were warmly welcomed by the local government in Warrnambool and also the local community,” he said. “Warrnambool is a welcoming zone from 2003; it’s just a matter of signing the document to make it official. “I’ve had a very positive experience being here and I’m very fortunate.” Mr Lual said that his kids played for local football and basketball teams, with his son

recently drafted to the Essendon Bombers in the AFL. “Since we’ve been to Warrnambool we’ve become part of the family of Warrnambool, part of the community of Warrnambool,” he said. Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said that signing the Refugee Welcome Zone declaration was a commitment to continue building a compassionate and inclusive Warrnambool. “As we embrace our new status of a Refugee Welcome Zone, let us all celebrate the diversity that defines Warrnambool. Our city is a vibrant tapestry of cultures,” he said. “Together let us continue to welcome and embrace those seeking refuge, ensuring that our community remains a place where dignity and the rights of every individual are upheld.” He also recognised council’s role in bringing skilled migrants to the region via

the Designated Area Migration Agreement with the Australian Government. Council spearheaded a regional effort to secure just the second agreement of this nature for any region in Australia. “I’m pleased to acknowledge the contributions of skilled migrants who have chosen Warrnambool as their new home, coming to us through programs like the Designated Area Migration Agreement,” Cr Blain said. “These individuals with their specialised skills and talents are not only enriching our community but also playing a pivotal role in addressing staff shortages for local businesses.” Manager of Refugee Council Australia Rebecca Langton congratulated Warrnambool on officially becoming a Refugee Welcome Zone. “We’re delighted that Warrnambool has taken this important step,” she said. “In doing so your council is making a

public commitment to welcome refugees into the community, to uphold the rights of refugees, to demonstrate compassion and to enhance cultural and religious diversity in the community. “It’s very important for all levels of government to be involved. Obviously national policy is set at the federal level, and many other policies are set at the state level, but at the local level, the level of government closest to the people, it’s actually crucial. “Local government can show very significant leadership when it comes to promoting social inclusion and the acceptance of newcomers in the community.” As well as becoming a Refugee Welcome Zone, council is an established member of the Welcoming Cities Network – a network dedicated to the advancement of Australia as a welcoming, prosperous and cohesive nation.

WRAD honours dedicated staff

WRAD Health’s chairperson Helen Taylor has been recognised for her 25-year commitment to the organisation.

During the organisation’s recent annual meeting, secretary Robert Coffey presented Helen with a framed certificate to recognise her milestone. “Helen has given 25 years of outstanding service and dedication,” Mr Coffey said. “Helen was hand-picked by John McGrath to join the Board and, along with Glenys Phillpot, has provided an important bridge between the first 13 years of the organisation and the newer committee members. “It speaks volumes for WRAD to have her continuity of compassion and leadership. WRAD works very hard at doing the best it can and by and large it succeeds, and a lot of that is due to the guidance of Helen.” Helen has been a member of the committee of management while WRAD has been based at Timor Street, Fairy Street and now Merri Street. She has been chairperson since 2006. “We are lucky to be on a committee when she does so much work and provides such excellent leadership,” Mr Coffey said. Helen describes her time with WRAD Health as a great honour. “From humble beginnings in Timor Street, we have grown into a health centre in Merri Street which provides a large range of health services to our community,” she said. “I hope that we will be able to establish the Lookout Residential Rehabilitation Centre in Warrnambool in the near future to provide the missing piece in addiction treatment in south west Victoria.”

The awards continued for the team at WRAD, with AOD clinician Hayley Elliott recently presented with WRAD Health’s first Dawn Bermingham award. The new award is a team recognition award decided by the staff of WRAD Health to recognise a fellow staff member who excels in their commitment and dedication and holds the WRAD Health values of compassion, respect, accountability, collaboration and integrity. Hayley is an AOD counsellor, Rough Sleeper MDT clinician, SAP coordinator and Project Connect program clinician. Her nominees praised her constant dedication to AOD and outreach work, describing Hayley as an outstanding ambassador for WRAD Health. “Hayley encompasses WRAD Health’s values on a daily basis, constantly carrying a full case load but always willing to support any other task,” one nominee said. “Hayley is a go-to member of the team and has forged new ground in working with homeless and vulnerable people,” another added. Hayley thanked the committee of management and the WRAD Health management and team for their support. “The whole WRAD team is like a family and we all work really well together,” she said. Dawn Bermingham was WRAD Health’s longest serving employee and was with the organisation since 1986 before retiring earlier this year. She stepped down from her full-time work as officer manager in 2020 but later returned and continued to work one day per week, as a part-time personal assistant supporting former CEO Geoff Soma and helping new staff.

Hayley Elliott has received the inaugural Dawn Bermingham award, presented by committee of management secretary Robert Coffey. 2023E

Pinot My name is

It’s really Pinot Grigio, Pinot for short. I am a gentle giant, who loves the beach and most of all food! I am a one year old groodle who is aging like a fine wine. I have a big little jack russell brother who is my best friend in the world. I love to smile and show my teeth whenever I’m happy, which people think is scary sometimes but once they get to know me they can see I’m just smiling excitedly. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all you animal lovers.

Beach rules for dog owners DOG lovers across the district are being urged to to March 31. take note of where dogs are and aren’t allowed on Warrnambool City councillor Angie Paspaliaris said she enjoyed visits to the beach with her dogs but also local beaches. acknowledged it was important to know which beaches dogs

With the festive season now upon us, Warrnambool’s beaches become an extremely busy tourist attraction, with thousands flocking to the district throughout summer. With Lake Pertobe especially busy at this time of year, it’s another reminder that dogs are not permitted in Lake Pertobe at any time. Dogs are also not permitted in the main beach area (Flume to Breakwater) from December 1 through to March 31. They are not permitted on the Hopkins River and beach frontage (ski club) between November 1 and April 30. They are allowed – on leash only – at the Blue Hole Reserve (Hopkins River ridge to mouth, east side) from December 1

were allowed on at certain times of the year. “I think as a councillor and a dog owner the companionship and fun that a dog can afford you is priceless,” she said. “Warrnambool is a fantastic place to own a dog. It’s such a wonderful and beautiful place to explore the outdoors and there’s no better excuse than a dog to encourage you to get out and about. “We encourage people to familiarise themselves with the rules on off-leash and on-leash areas. It’s very important for dog owners themselves, their dogs, other dog owners and other dogs for people to show respect, courtesy and ensure safety all-round so that everyone can enjoy public spaces.”

WARRNAMBOOL West Primary School students had a fun glimpse into where their food comes from late last month.

The foundation to year three students visited Tower Hill Beekeeping and Volcano Poduce for a hands-on experience as part of their inquiry unit. During the visit to Tower Hill Beekeeping, Tim

explained how the bees make honey in the hive as well as the process of collecting honey. At Volcano Produce, Ben and the team showed students the variety of fruit and vegetables grown on the property. They then raced to fill their containers with freshly picked cabbages to donate to Food Share. Afterwards, they were able to pick (and eat) some delicious strawberries.

Picturesque course for trials RIDERS faced a variety of weather conditions at last weekend’s Northern Horse Park Lakes and Craters International Horse Trials.

The Camperdown course proved a picturesque backdrop for competitors, with course designers and builders commended on constructing ‘amazing jumps’ which challenged riders in the cross-country event. The ground jury included Mrs Sumiko Suzuki from Japan along with three Australian judges. Last Thursday saw riders from Western Australia, South Australia (including one resident who originated from Belgium), Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria arrive for identification and horse inspection. Friday’s weather was extremely warm and the dressage was hotly contested in all classes, from EvA80cm through to CCI3*Long. On Saturday the weather gods provided rain for most of the day, but the temperature was just right for the horses on cross-county. Sunday saw the final horse inspection before the start of the show jumping, which was held in pleasant weather conditions.

Many horses entered were Off the Track (OTT) - former racehorses given a new goal in life. Off The Track is sponsored by the Victorian Racing Club to rehome and train ex racehorses after their racing life. Class winners included: EvA80A - Alexah Robinson riding Isle of New Norfolk. EvA80B - Alexah Robinson and Harley’s Blue Moonshine (they also won the People on Ponies class). EvA80 - Fiona Hawkes and Bocelli’s Legend. EvA95A - Natalie Davies and Berlock Neika. EvA95B - Bronte Bravo and Incline Park Remberance. EvA95 - Charlize Scott and Banyiera Park Pocket; Chelsea Whicker and Ocean Drive. CCN1*L - Wilhelm Enzinger and Innaminny (who also won the CCN1*L OTT Rug). CCN12*S - Samantha Cesnick and Giovanni Geo-rgio (who also won the CCI2*S OTT Rug). CCI2*L - Asha Warnock and Gold Symphany (who also won the CCI2*L OTT Rug). CCI3*S - Audrey Nicolai (BEL) and Insidious Ghost (also won the CCI3*L OTT Rug). CCI3*L - Sophie Warren and Reduction (also won the OTT CCI3*L rug).
