Grease is the word Grease is the

GREASE is the word at Warrnambool College.

On a cold winters’ afternoon, the open door of the Warrnambool College auditorium has radiated warmth from the energy generated by more than 50 students bringing

GREASE the musical to life.

Less than a month out from taking the stage at the Lighthouse Theatre the cast, band, crew and army of volunteers have been rehearsing weekly.

Warrnambool College proudly boasts the only school musical which showcases its own student musicians who will expertly provide the live soundtrack.

Including a full rhythm section and full complement of brass instruments, the iconic songs such as ‘You’re the One that I Want’, ‘Grease is the Word’ and ‘Hopelessly Devoted’ will have the audience singing in their seats.

GREASE marks the 5th musical delivered by the dynamic director/producer duo of Kerry Ziegeler and Kerry Cheeseman who again bring with them the talented Erin Toulmin as musical director, local legend Gabby Steel as vocal director and local musicians Beau Nieuwveld and Jillian Gundermann.

Initially only two shows were on offer, however demand has seen the addition of a third.

Local primary students will also experience this musical classic through two school matinees.

Get ready to dust off your leather jackets, pull on your bobby-socks and join this sensational cast and live band as “bad boy” Danny and “the girl next door” Sandy fall in love all over again.

Tickets for the three shows – to be held on August 17, 18 and 19 - are on sale now and selling fast at Lighthouse Theatre.

Gerard’s dream comes true

AFTER 20 years of working in supported employment, Gerard Jansen is relishing his new job in a mainstream industry that he loves.

At 46, Gerard is realising his dream of working with likeminded people who enjoy the tools of their trade.

With assistance from his Southern Stay support coordinator Bec Ryan, Gerard is now working at South West Tools and Industrial two mornings a week.

Ms Ryan said Gerard, who has Down Syndrome, was loving the challenge and the working environment.

“My role as support coordinator was to listen to what Gerard wanted to be doing and provide options, whether that be mainstream employment or supported employment,” Ms Ryan said.

“Gerard felt that his supported job’s hours were too long and he wanted a better work-life balance.

“Working long days five days a week was really tiring for him so he wanted to work less hours but be in a field that he enjoyed.”

Ms Ryan approached gforce

which set up an interview and trial at South West Tools and Industrial and Gerard got the job.

“Now he works two short days and is able to use his other supports for the rest of the week to do things he wants, such as playing cricket. He’s got the work-life balance that he wanted and looks forward to going to work.”

Gerard was previously working in a different field.

“He really liked the idea of working with tools and with `the boys’,” Ms Ryan said.

“It’s what he’s always wanted to do.”

Gerard undertakes a variety of roles, from helping with deliveries and stocking the shelves to cleaning.

“I like my work buddies and it’s good to have a job I like,” he said.

South West Tools and Industrial owner Pat Lane said Gerard was proving to be a valuable and popular staff member.

“We were keen to help someone who wanted to learn more about working with tools so we came up with this position for Gerard,” he said.

“It works well for us and for Gerard.”

ROAR

MANY may have pondered why the organisation is called Lions.

“Is it because you are a lot of old roarers?” one reader asked.

No, it has nothing to do with the animal variety or its behaviour.

Back in July 1917 when a 38-year-old Chicago businessman proposed that business clubs unite and reach beyond business interests to address the betterment of their communities and the world I don’t think that even he, the visionary that he was, could have imagined the impact of his suggestion not only in his native United States but throughout the world.

Later that same year, the International Association of Lions Clubs became a reality.

The adoption of its constitution and bylaws, code of ethics, and an emblem while establishing the main intent of “unselfish service to others” was born.

Lions now exist in every country in the world, with more than 1.4 million members and the definitive motto ‘We Serve.’

And the words LIONS?

It is based on the acronym Liberty, Intelligence Our Nations Safety.

Despite the fact that Lions was formed during the final stages of a brutal world war that took the lives of more 33 million people, ‘Our Nations Safety’ does not refer to some sort of clandestine stand against possible conflicts but rather the safety of communities and individuals through Lions clubs’ involvement in all facets of human need – health, welfare, youth, environment, disaster response and much more.

The Lions ethics that preclude any discussion and involvement of partisan politics and sectarian religion certainly supports their objective.

That is, to serve all communities and individuals no matter what their colour, class, nationality or creed.

The Lions Club of Port Fairy-Belfast is preparing for the 38th annual Art Show.

This will be held in December-January.

The art show is one of the highlights of the Lion year (and the Port Fairy Moyneyana Festival) and attracts artists from throughout Victoria, providing the opportunity for established and new artists, especially local artists, to display their work, win category prizes, and present their efforts for sale.

The show will also feature its usual tapestry display and work by local school children.

Artists who are on the club’s emailing list will receive details in the next month or so.

Requests for entry forms and details can also be made by email to pfbelfastlionsclub@ gmail.com.

Panel request for estate proposal

THE future of a proposed ‘Rivers Run Estate’ in Port Fairy remains in limbo following calls to appoint an independent planning panel.

At last week’s Ordinary Council Meeting, Moyne Shire councillors voted in favour of requesting the Minister for Planning to appoint a panel to hear submissions and provide direction on Planning Scheme Amendment C75 (Rivers Run Estate).

The amendment, put forward by a private developer, proposes to rezone and subdivide the land into 75 residential lots.

The amendment was exhibited over a period of six weeks between December 16, 2021 and January 31, 2022 with 89 submissions received.

The amendment was placed on hold in February 2022, with further documents requested, which have now been provided to council.

All submissions and council’s responses will be submitted to the panel should the minister approve the request.

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Karen Foster said an independent planning panel would hear the concerns raised in submissions and provide recommendations on how to best proceed with the amendment.

“Sending this to a panel to ensure the proposal and the submissions are reviewed independently is a sensible next step for this proposal and we hope the Minister for Planning will grant this request,” Cr Foster said.

“A panel will give all parties an opportunity to have their views heard and will then provide a set of recommendations to council.

“It’s the logical step for this proposal which has generated a significant level of community interest.”

As the amendment has been requested by a private developer, all costs associated with the amendment, including a panel if appointed will be the responsibility of the proponent.

The proposed Rivers Run Estate in Port Fairy offers a variety of lot sizes, ranging from about 350 square metres to 660 square metres, and will provide options for smaller households, such as one and two-bedroom townhouses.

The estate is expected to assist in fulfilling social and affordable housing demand in Port Fairy in the short term.

The plan provides for features including a ‘gateway park’ with picnic and cycling facilities and connections to the Port Fairy-Warrnambool Rail Trail.

It also incorporates a linear park connecting to the Princes Highway, a vegetated drainage reserve with boardwalk, and solar powered barbecue facilities for residents as well as extensive landscaping across the estate.

Any person who made a submission will have the opportunity to present their views at the Panel Hearing (date yet to be disclosed).

Moyne Shire Council Community Update

Green light for stage one of Koroit works

From the Mayor:

At our July Meeting Councillors passed a motion to oppose seismic testing in the Otway Basin.

While the Commonwealth Government is the decision maker on permits for oil and gas exploration in Federal waters, Council has an important role to play in advocacy.

We’ve heard what our community has to say about their concerns for the environment, our commercial fishing industries and for our tourism economy.

Council will now write to the Prime Minister, Minister for Technology, Science and Technology, Minister for Resources and other relevant federal and state MPs to voice our opposition.

We will also establish a temporary advisory committee to help us review Council’s Environment Strategy to include references to protecting our coastlines from oil and gas developments.

I’d also encourage community members concerned with the proposals to make their thoughts known during the planned consultation process to ensure your voices are heard by the authority making the decisions on these matters.

The July meeting also discussed an Environmental Effects Statement for the proposed Hexham Wind Farm and what elements that report should explore.

Again, Council isn’t the decision-maker make on this, but we have a role to play in advocacy and will make a submission to the Minister for Planning on this issue.

Our draft submission proposes using real life examples of wind farm impacts, rather than modelling. We have 400 turbines operating in the shire, so we have solid data on the impacts the developments have on roads, the noise they produce and the numbers of birds and bats killed through blade strike.

We believe real examples – not just modelling – will help ensure the Environmental Effects Statement is as accurate as impossible and we will be making that point to the Minister.

Councillors also voted to request that an Independent Planning Panel consider a planning scheme amendment and subdivision proposed for Port Fairy.

The subdivision, known locally as Rivers Run, has attracted feedback form the community.

Those submissions have been received by Council and now an independent panel will review the proposal, the submissions and Council’s responses to them.

The Panel will then provide feedback to Council and make recommendations on how to proceed.

A panel for a proposal like this is a requirement under the Planning and Environment Act and is the next step in a defined process.

Work on the Koroit Township Renewal project will get underway as soon as possible – with Councillors giving the green light to stage one of the project.

Stage one will complete the bluestone footpath on the North side of Commercial Road, between IGA and the Woolsthorpe Road intersection and will be funded through the $1 million Council has previously allocated to the project.

Talks have already begin with local suppliers and contractors and work will begin as soon as possible with timing dependent on favorable weather conditions, procurement processes, and contractor and availability of materials.

Councillors also voted to allocate a further $2 million to the project which will be used as the required matched funding for an expression of interest application to the Federal Government’s Growing Region’s fund.

If that application is successful, Council will have $4 million to complete bluestone footpaths and other renewal works on both sides Commercial Road from Micky Bourkes to the Village Green as well as footpath, parking and road works in High Street from Commercial Road to the Bowls Club.

The program is a two-step process, if Council’s Expression of Interest is successful and it is invited to make a full application –the results should be known around Christmas time.

If the funding application is not successful, Council would need to reassess options, including exploring an application to the second round of the fund.

Mayor Cr Karen Foster said the steps being taken were the preferred way forward of the Koroit District Progress Association and from traders in the immediate project area.

“We are committed to this project, it is our number one capital works plan and we are keen to get it moving, as is the KDPA, so it will be great to see this project start to take shape,” Cr Foster said.

“We appreciate the community’s patience on this - Township renewals are expensive, transformational projects, and we need government funding to assist us to complete them – renewals in Mortlake and Port Fairy were completed with funding assistance from government – so it’s not out of the ordinary to try and attract that support.

“We’ve been advocating solidly on this project to both the State and Federal governments for a long time, so we now have an exciting opportunity to move forward.”

Lighting a fuse to upskill young people

A group of young people from across the region have recently completed their Level 2 First Aid course in Port Fairy free of charge – and the best news is there is plenty more free training on offer.

A wide range of new courses have been lunched as part of Fuse – a program to boost the skills, credentials, confidence and connections of young people aged between 14 and 25 living in small towns and remote parts of Victoria’s south-west region. Mayor, Cr Karen Foster said there was a diverse range of free training programs and hands-on experiences, including Barista Basics, Pool Lifeguard Training, Shearing, Budgeting Borrowing and Saving, Food Handling, Responsible Service of Alcohol and Defensive Driving.

“There are options to suit everyone, covering a broad range of skills and interests,” she said.

“Many of these courses are in school holidays and will book out quickly. We urge young people to act soon to secure a spot.”

Planting for a greener future

STUDENTS at Warrnambool West Primary School were eager to get their hands dirty last week.

Children from foundation through to year four spent some time on Friday preparing and planting trees, shrubs and small plants in the school gardens.

The sunny weather made for perfect conditions to be outdoors as part of ‘Schools Tree Day.’

The school was grateful for the support of Pearsons Nursery in Allansford who generously donated the plants.

TAFE students up for the challenge

TWO South West TAFE students will be plying their trades with the best in Australia at an upcoming national competition.

Beauty therapist Sophie Harry and chef Chloe Graham will be competing in the WorldSkills Australia National championships in Melbourne on August 16-23 after winning their regional titles.

Chloe will be the only Victorian in the cookery section while Sophie will be one of only two Victorians in the beauty therapy finals in the Australia-wide competition.

Chloe, a third-year commercial cookery apprentice, said that reaching the finals was a big thrill.

“Just being there will be a really good experience, winning would be a huge accomplishment and a real bonus,” she said.

Chloe attends South West TAFE in Warrnambool every two weeks and said her mentor Paul McLeod had helped her to prepare for the challenge.

She also attended a training camp in

June in preparation for the competition.

There will be 14 finalists in the cookery section who must cook tasty plates, main meals and entrees and a dessert and complete a skills test.

Twenty-one-year-old Chloe is looking forward to a long career as a chef.

“There’s so much variety in what you do,” she said.

“Chefs can work anywhere and there are so many different types of cooking. At the moment I’m enjoying being in a bakery.”

Sophie Harry completed her Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy last year and now works at the Wellness Centre in Warrnambool with one of her TAFE teachers, Debbie Ferguson.

“The course definitely prepared me well, especially because some of the teachers are still working in the field so I was able to gain current knowledge,” she said.

Sophie will be tested on waxing, tinting, facials, massage and nail enhancements.

“I feel privileged to be in the finals,” she said.

“My teachers encouraged me to compete

and I’m glad I did because it has been a great opportunity.”

Sophie and Chloe will be among 500 young people competing across all trade areas.

South West TAFE teacher Kate McBain has been appointed the Victorian team leader for the Hair, Beauty, Florist and Graphics sector, where she will look after the needs of students from around Victoria.

“I will be there to help them at the competition if they have any worries,” Ms McBain said.

It will be her first time in the role.

“It’s a really big deal for the students and if they win as they get to go to France for the world finals,” she said.

Held over three days at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, the WorldSkills Australia and the Victorian Careers and Employment Expo will see the country’s best trainees and apprentices go head-to-head in high-pressure skills competition.

WorldSkills Australia championships operate on a two-year cycle.

Crazy good ideas

STUDENTS from St Patrick’s Primary School and Port Fairy Consolidated Primary stepped up to complete Moyne Shire Council’s Social Innovators program recently, with a strong focus on ideas being brought to life in the community.

The year 6 students came together on July 17-18 at Southcombe Lodge to complete the program, led by Crazy Ideas College (CIC).

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Karen Foster said across the two days the young people discovered new insights around issues they care about.

“These children generated crazy good ideas, and prototyped how these ideas can work in the community,” she said.

“They presented compelling pitches to a panel of community and business partners with creative thinking about how we tackle our big challenges in new and radical ways.”

Key themes that the ideas addressed included finding ways to promote care for the environment, enhancing health and wellbeing, fostering community connectedness and reimagining learning.

“The partners provided feedback to teams as they developed their ideas, and connected teams with the right people and resources so their ideas can be brought to life over the next eight weeks.”

At the conclusion of the program, all ideas will be showcased at https://cicbeyond. com/ to celebrate and connect these ideas with community.

Social Innovators is made possible through the Victorian Government Engage! fund.

Rabbit eradication plans for island

RABBIT eradication plans have been announced by the state government for Deen Maar Island.

The island, located eight kilometres south-west of Port Fairy, is culturally significant to Indigenous Victorians for its role in Bunjil creation stories. However, rabbits are threatening to cause damage to First Peoples’ spiritual sites and animal habitats.

The island is also home to the nation’s largest breeding colony of Australian Fur Seals, and it is one of Victoria’s most important seabird breeding sites, hosting colonies of Short-tailed Shearwaters, Little Penguins and Fairy Prions.

There are no other native mammals or amphibians on Deen Maar, and the White’s Skink is the only reptile on the island.

A threat to the successful breeding of native seabird species is the presence of European rabbits, first introduced in the mid-1800s to provide a food source for potential shipwreck survivors. Rabbits pose a negative impact on the nesting habitats of seabirds by altering vegetation cover and causing widespread erosion as they forage and burrow.

Reducing rabbit numbers will help improve habitat for seabird nesting on the island, while boosting their longterm breeding success, and strengthening the species’ resilience across the state.

The government, in collaboration with Parks Victoria, Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation (EMAC) and Gunditj Mirring Traditional

Owner Aboriginal Corporation (GMTOAC) will support the project through multiple phases across 2023.

“Deen Maar has incredible environmental and cultural values and we’re honoured to partner with Traditional Owners to protect this vital seabird and seal breeding site,” Minister for the Environment Ingrid Stitt said.

Deen Maar Island

“This vital work will ensure Deen Maar Island’s precious biodiversity and First Peoples history remains protected for years to come.”

According to Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation, the island is a culturally significant site and a “special place” for Eastern Maar and Gunditjmara peoples.

Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owner Aboriginal Corporation and Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation are project partners of the Deen Maar Island Rabbit Eradication Project.

Both corporations are supportive of the project and are looking forward to the successful eradication of rabbits from this special place.

Historical society celebrates

VISITORS to the Port Fairy Historical Society museum on Saturday August 12 will enjoy free admission.

Free entry is on offer throughout the day in celebration of the society’s 60th anniversary.

The first meeting of the Port Fairy Historical Society was held on March 13, 1963 and members would like to celebrate this milestone with the wider community.

The museum has been closed for the past four months while Moyne Shire Council repainted the interior of the building.

The re-opening will also feature some new exhibitions for members and the general public to enjoy.

The museum (located at the courthouse) will be open from 2pm until 5pm on August 12.

Free fishing and boating forum

A FREE forum for recreational fishers and boaters will be held in Warrnambool in September.

The forum will run from 7pm-9pm at the Warrnambool Offshore Angling Club in Viaduct Road on Thursday September 14.

The evening will give participants the chance to discuss their much-loved pastimes and share ideas to make fishing even better.

These forums, which will be held at several locations across the state and hosted by local fishing clubs, have become an annual tradition, with this year marking the third consecutive instalment.

The forums will feature presentations from Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) and Better Boating Victoria (BBV) staff on the latest in fishing and boating, including updates on the positive impact the Victorian Government’s $96 million package to improve fishing, boating, piers and aquaculture is making in each local area.

The forum will feature a comprehensive hour-long presentation before the audience gets the chance to engage with VFA and BBV representatives directly, providing an opportunity to ask questions and exchange ideas.

Topics will be tailored to each region, including local initiatives from the Go Fishing Victoria plan, upgrades as part of the state’s biggest ever boat ramp construction program being led by BBV, the vital work of Fisheries Officers and research insights from fisheries scientists into iconic fish like Murray cod and yellowtail kingfish.

VFA chief executive officer Travis Dowling said this year’s run of forums was the biggest yet and presented an opportunity for fishers and boaters to learn something new, share an idea or ask that burning question that has long been the source of debate with family and friends.

“We’re excited to be heading out to even more clubs to catch up with fishers and boaters and discuss how we’re helping make their pastime better than ever,” he said.

“What we’re really keen to do is hear what matters to fishers and boaters in

their neck of the woods. Locals know their patch best and their ideas can help us make fishing even better in Victoria.

“There’s so much to chat about, from where we’re stocking your fish, the growing all-abilities boating network, reinvestment of fees from your fishing and boating licences, important education work and much, much more.” For enthusiasts eager to enhance their fishing and boating experiences, the forum is a must-attend event.

ELVIS has entered (and left) the building…

Visitors to Gateway Plaza last week were treated to a glimpse of what can be enjoyed by audiences at next month’s ‘The Elvis and Buddy Show’ at Warrnambool’s Lighthouse Theatre.

Highly acclaimed entertainer Mark Caliguiri thrilled shoppers at Gateway when he performed a few songs from two of the most influential rock and roll performers of all times.

Mark will be joined by The Sensational Memphis Beat Showband at the Lighthouse Theatre on Friday September 15 for what promises to be a night of high-quality music and entertainment.

Audiences will be able to sing along to such favourites as ‘That’ll Be The day’, ‘Peggy Sue’, ‘Rave On’ and ‘Suspicious Minds.’

Mark has been performing as Elvis and Buddy Holly for 20 years, taking his twopart action-packed show around the world.

Sheep Yarding: 693 (-1607)

Stevens shines for

HAMPDEN League’s young talent was on display at Warrnambool’s Reid Oval last Sunday.

South Warrnambool’s George Stevens was named best on ground in the Greater Western Victoria Rebels’ dominating win over the Geelong Falcons, 17.14.116 to 6.l4.40. The round 14 match was the first game to be held in Warrnambool for the Rebels since 2014.

Talented Koroit teenager Connor Byrne led the Rebels attack, kicking five goals for the day, while Cobden youngster Rhys Unwin also shone, booting three goals which included what spectators called a ‘freakish snap’ from the left pocket in the third quarter.

South Warrnambool’s Wil Rantall and Luamon Lual, along with Warrnambool’s Amon Radley and Reggie Mast, and Koroit’s Mitch Lloyd also performed well on the day.

Local skaters lead the way

WARRNAMBOOL Roller Derby League stars Monk and The Mad Splatter headed to the semi-finals of the state-wide Stampede tournament last week.

Hosted by Team Regional Victoria (TRV), the event was held at the Gippsland Regional Sports Complex in Sale and attracted some of the state’s best skaters.

Monk and The Mad Splatter were part of TRV which played against South Sea Roller Derby’s Banshees side.

While the Banshees were victorious scoring 259 against TRVs 93, TRV showed some really strong techniques both in blocking and jamming.

The Mad Splatter scored 23 points and finished equal top two scoring jammer of the round while Monk picked up the team’s most voted MVP blocker for the 2023 season.

Excitingly, Warrnambool Roller Derby League coach, Monk, has been selected to take on the role of vice-captain, leading Team Regional Victoria into the next season alongside Kick (captain) from the Mildura Roller Derby League.

The next round will be played in Geelong on August 26.

Last weekend’s third versus fourth clash saw the Bulldogs take an early lead on their home ground, kicking 4.1 to 1.8 in the opening term before extending their lead to 39 points going into the main break.

Consistency throughout the four quarters saw Panmure add 3.2 to the scoreboard in the third and another 3.4 in the final quarter to run out 41-point victors, 17.8.110 to 9.15.69.

Damian Moloney, Tate Gardiner, Bradley Gedye, Lachlan McLeod, Thomas Wright and Harrison Searle were named among the best for Panmure.

Orford and district table tennis

WHEN a team wins six rubbers play stops as they have won the right to advance to the next level of finals for Orford and District table tennis.

Both the Warrnambool Vikings and Warrnambool Warriors have a clear run to the grand final while Attunga enjoy their holiday.

In A grade, Attunga forfeited to Warrnambool Vikings who are now sitting back awaiting to see who advances to the grand final.

In the second semi-final, Warrnambool Warriors defeated Port Fairy 6.23-3.11.

Four of the nine rubbers played were extended, with Warrnambool Warriors only winning the double game - Neil Ford and Peter Owen against Port Fairy’s Tony Storer and Ray Young 11-5, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11 and 11-5. With two rubbers not played, Peter Owen was the only one to win three rubbers.

Wayne Krause (Port Fairy) defeated Marshall Worthington 11-9, 9-11, 9-11, 16-14 and 11-6.

Port Fairy also won the second doubles in five. Warrnambool Warriors will have a week to rest, recuperate and practice to be ready to face Warrnambool Vikings in the preliminary final after receiving a forfeit from Attunga.

In B grade’s first semi-final Myndarra defeated Glengleeson 6.18-3.10.

Aaron Rowbottom (Myndarra) won his three rubbers, teaming with Ally and Jensen Rowbottom to win both the doubles played for the night.

Ally was their other winner when she defeated Glengleeson’s Lyndsay Morton.

Both Bill Lyons and Gareth Spring won a rubber each for their team.

In the second semi-final, Orford lost to Tarrone 5.206.20.

Losing two rubbers in five games cost Orford the

chance to take out this match.

Steven Young (Tarrone) defeated Jayden Clapp 8-11, 13-11, 11-9, 4-11 and 11-8.

Steven teamed with David Warhurst to defeat Orford team Jayden and David Rowbottom 10-12, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9 and 16-14.

David Warhurst won his three rubbers while Steven won two to win to fight another night.

David Rowbottom won two rubbers for Orford while Jayden and David Bartlett won one each.

The preliminary final will see Glengleeson take on Tarrone.

Glengleeson has defeated Tarrone twice this year and predictions are that they will make it a clean sweep to make their way to the grand final.

Though both wins have been 6-5 with long games and rubbers, Tarrone don’t have the depth or consistency of players while they rely on David Warhurst to carry them.

Traditional format returns

THE traditional 11-a-side full field hockey format returned to Warrnambool last weekend.

The weekly Hockey 5s competition took a back seat for the weekend as the 11-a-side format, which is played at the Olympics, was reintroduced for one of two weeks this school term (with the second to be held the last weekend in August).

For many 2023 members, who travel from Corangamite and Portland to play in Warrnambool, it was their first taste of the traditional game and it is hoped even more full field hockey will be played in 2024 as membership rebounds.

Hockey South West has worked hard over the past 18 months to ‘build back better’ after the disruption of pandemic lockdowns which saw player and volunteer numbers plummet across most community sports.

Last weekend was a significant step in the rebuild.

The growing committee has innovated and tried different things to attract new players and reengage past players.

Hockey South West became the first community in Australia to invest in two sets of internationallycertified ‘rebound boards’ in 2022 and adopt the

fun, fast and high scoring Hockey5s format.

This format is like a giant outdoor air hockey table and it has contributed to a rapid and awardwinning rebuild of participation levels.

Hockey5s is a fun and accessible activity which is easy for new players of all ages and fitness levels to learn and enjoy.

The Hockey5s World Cup will be held in January 2024 in Oman.

Anyone interested in playing hockey is welcome to ‘give it a try’ at 9am each Saturday in Warrnambool.
