Shearwater Fledglings will soon leave Griffiths Island for their first migration.
Helping hand for fledglings
AS Shearwater fledglings prepare to leave their burrows on Griffiths Island for their first migration, Moyne Shire Council is undertaking several initiatives to give them every chance of survival.
Council has turned off the light at the rotunda at the entrance to the island, to reduce artificial light in the area which can sometimes cause confusion for the fledglings and leave them vulnerable to predators.
This Saturday and Sunday evening, a professional shooting contractor will
be on-site to undertake a fox shoot in an attempt to stop the predators attacking fledglings before they leave their burrows.
For community safety, Martins Point and the Griffiths Island carpark will be closed to the public from 6pm each evening until 6am the following morning.
Ocean Drive will also be closed between Victoria Street and The Passage carpark.
Safety officers will be on-site to prevent public access to the area and Victoria Police has been notified.
Residents are asked to avoid the area this weekend – and shouldn’t be
alarmed if they hear gunshots from the area during these times.
Data from the past two years shows the highest number of Shearwater Fledgling deaths from foxes at this time of year.
It’s also important to note that despite interventions such as those planned by council for this weekend, several Shearwater deaths are attributed to natural attrition each year (including starvation and inability to withstand the elements).
Mortality is highest in the first year of life, as fledglings are abandoned by their parents as they forage and prepare for migration.

Bank Street preferred charging site
PORT Fairy’s Bank Street has been selected as the preferred location for a public access electric vehicle fast charging station under an agreement with Evie Networks.
Councillors agreed to entering a commercial arrangement with Evie at Wednesday’s Ordinary Meeting of Council.
Evie will operate and maintain the charging point which will be placed on council-managed land, near Fisherman’s Walk in Bank Street.
Moyne Shire mayor Karen Foster said the Bank Street location “made sense”.
“It’s right near the Visitor Information Centre and is right in the heart of town within walking distance to shops, cafes and restaurants,” she said.
“More and more people visiting Port Fairy are arriving in electric vehicles; if we want to remain a key destination for tourists, we need to ensure people in EVs have access to public charging points.
“This is a fantastic result which will mean publicly accessible EV infrastructure in Port Fairy at minimal costs to ratepayers and fulfils one of council’s 10 Climate Emergency Declaration priority actions.”
Cr Foster said council would explore similar partnerships for other
locations around the shire.
“We know that the numbers of EVs on our roads is increasing, making up 3.8 per cent of all new car sales in Australia in 2022, up 94 per cent on the previous year,” she said.
“If we want people to continue to visit our region, we need to be providing this infrastructure and partnerships with private industry like this are the perfect way to meet that growing demand.”
Under the proposed agreement, Evie Networks will be required to undertake community and stakeholder consultation prior to construction, with support provided by council.

ANGLERS will soon have an updated jetty in Port Fairy with Better Boating Victoria announcing funding this week.
The Port Fairy project was one of 35 across the state to receive funding.
Minister for Outdoor Recreation Sonya Kilkenny announced a $2.75million investment across the projects designed to improve facilities as well as undertaking dredging to facilitate greater access
during lower tides and water levels.
The grants were awarded through the Victorian government’s Recreational Boating Structural Maintenance and Dredging and Access Grants programs and funded via the reinvestment of boaters’ recreational licence and registration fees.
“This is a great example of how reinvesting licence and registration fees is improving the experience for boaters and making getting out on the water easier
and more accessible,” Ms Kilkenny said.
“With projects right across Victoria covering a range of improvements, we’re building bigger and better facilities for everyone in the community to enjoy.”
Moyne Shire Council received $50,000 for the Port Fairy jetty upgrades.
The shire also received a further $50,000 to design a jetty replacement at the Curdievale boat ramp.

We will remember them
THE sun shone brightly and the crowds gathered to remember and pay their respects at ANZAC Day services across the district.
Warrnambool RSL president Michael Bellamy welcomed a large gathering at the Warrnambool War Memorial, as veterans, school children, families and representatives from various community, service and sporting clubs stood side by side to remember the fallen and pay tribute to all those who served, and continue to serve, our nation.
“Today is of great significance as we gather to remember and pay tribute to all those who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations,” Mr Bellamy said.
Mr Bellamy and members of the Warrnambool and District Pipes and Drums earlier led a procession along Liebig Street to the memorial.
Crowds lined both sides of the street to watch and cheer as war veterans marched, along with members of the Air Force and Army cadets, school groups, guides, scouts and various community groups. Vehicles from the Military Vehicles Restoration Club added to the atmosphere of the parade.
Throughout the morning a large number of floral arrangements were laid including those from Warrnambool City mayor Debbie Arnott, Member for Wannon Dan Tehan, and various schools, community groups and service organisations.
Tuesday’s fine weather also saw crowds gather for morning services in Dennington, Hawkesdale, Yambuk and Port Fairy along with afternoon services in Koroit and Panmure.

Local Vietnam veterans honoured
Port Fairy remembers
PORT Fairy local James Kelly led an emotional ANZAC Day service in the town on Tuesday.
Mr Kelly, who served with the Australian Navy in Afghanistan, spoke of the importance of mental health issues for service men and women and of the difficulties faced while transitioning back into “everyday society”.
Mr Kelly’s own grandfather, who was also a soldier, ultimately became a lifelong alcoholic.
PANMURE paid tribute to local Vietnam veterans with a plaque unveiling during the town’s Anzac Day service this week.
Panmure Action Group president Ian Wallace, who led the service, said each year a group was selected to be recognised.
A plaque was unveiled under the Lone Pine at the Panmure War Memorial bearing the names of those from the area who had served in Vietnam; Peter Fry, Richard Ridgewell, Keith Dixon, Brian Mathers, Michael Smith, James Ryan, Terry McInerney, John Knight and George Atkins.
“We’re recognising Vietnam veterans from within a 10-mile radius of Panmure, which includes Allansford, Naringal, Framlingham, Garvoc and Laang, for their service” he said.
“We’ve centred our 2023 service around these men, as in previous year we’ve centred the service around others.
“We’ve had wonderful support from the army, especially Lieutenant Zeigler, who plays an integral part of our service each year.
“This was also the first time we’ve had a singer, Don Cowling, and we’ve never had a speaker system this good, so we’re really pleased with how everything went.”
The service began with a march down Harris Street to the memorial, with a large military presence joining local veterans and family members.
The service featured guest speakers, including Vietnam veterans, who recounted their experiences and spoke about what Anzac Day means to them.
Among the speakers was Moyne Shire mayor Karen Foster, who said it was important to reflect on what Anzac Day means.
“I have a 23-year-old daughter and a 20-year-old son, and the average age of a solider in 1914 was 23,” she said.
“By sheer chance, my children were born in to a time of peace and they have never had to contemplate going to war and, as their mother, I’ve never had to face the abject terror of waving them off, never knowing if I would see them again.
“As their mother, and as an Australian, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of the servicemen and women who have gone before.
“It’s because of their sacrifice that our children have been able to grow up today as part of the Anzac tradition of which we can all feel so proud; so, we remember them all.”
Mr Wallace also paid tribute to Panmure Action Group vice president Reg Dumesny, who died earlier this year in a car accident.
Mr Dumesny played an integral role in helping to organise Anzac Day services in Panmure, and his loss is one still felt today.
“I couldn’t mention him during the service, I would have come unglued,” Mr Wallace said.
Following Mr Kelly’s opening remarks, Moyne Shire mayor Cr Karen Foster spoke of the first Anzac the day was originally only associated with Gallipoli, but has since evolved into an acknowledgement of all major wars and conflicts of the 20th century.
Cr Foster reflected on her extreme pride in the Anzac Day tradition and how, as a mother herself, she could not imagine the “abject terror” mother’s must face upon saying goodbye to a son or daughter departing for service.
Barbara Brooks recited a touching poetic tribute and the Port Fairy Citizens’ Band performed hymns as a time of quiet reflection.
Students from St Patrick’s and Port Fairy Consolidated School took part in the service, along with veteran Doug Nolte who recited the Ode of Remembrance and Army veteran Colin Lang who also addressed the crowd.

Irish festival this weekend
KOROIT is all set to take centre stage this weekend, with the annual Koroit Irish Festival.
Koroit’s claim as Australia’s Most Irish Town will again be boosted by the festival, with organisers anticipating around 400 people to attend.
This will double the town’s population, with 70 percent of tickets for the festival purchased from people outside the region.
A dedicated committee of 20 volunteers have been working hard behind the scenes to put the festival together, with partnerships with other community groups and businesses helping bring the event to life.
Major festival partner Bega has teamed with the festival committee to build a permanent stage on the town’s Village Green.
Moyne Shire Council and the Victorian government have also contributed, along with ‘Visit Victoria’ to help extend the reach of the event.
The Koroit Lions Club continues to be a major partner of the festival, both through funding and providing helping hands.
A large number of schools, community groups and clubs in the town use the festival as a fundraising event or to promote their organisations.
Koroit’s two primary schools will once again help cater for the festival while the town’s kindergarten will again run the Kids Area. The festival will kick off tonight (Friday) with a
sell-out concert in the Koroit Theatre.
Tomorrow (Saturday) visitors to the town can enjoy a range of day-long activities in Commercial Road.
On Sunday, activities are spread around the town with a major focus on a Gaelic Games day at Victoria Park.
The festival will also feature the inaugural Kortraits Art Exhibition while the Koroit CWA’s quest to make 5000 shamrocks will be on show.
Tickets are available online at koroitirishfestival. com.au
Adults are $25 while under 18s are free.

Money to give away
THE DemoDAIRY Foundation has an unusual problem – its goal is to give away money but there aren’t enough people putting their hands up for it.
The foundation is launching a new campaign to inspire more people to apply for scholarships and grants.
Chair Andrea Vallance said the foundation could allocate up to $100,000 a year for worthwhile projects but struggled to find enough suitable applicants.
The DemoDAIRY Foundation (DDF) was established in 2018 after a resolution to wind up the former DemoDAIRY Cooperative near Terang, with funds from the sale of the property invested into a fund.
To streamline the process, DDF is inviting applicants to apply for scholarships or submit grant applications twice yearly, with a mid-year cut-off date of May 30 and late October.
DDF has previously supported scholarships and grants for a range of dairy or agribusiness related proposals as diverse as innovation grants including a water rat, research projects, business management skill development and field trials.
Funds have also been used towards capacity development grants, supporting WestVic Dairy events, the Food and Fibre Great South Coast Careers Advisory Panel (CAP), the Neil Porter Legacy, Leadership Great South Coast and participation in dairy conferences, study tours and a range of tertiary or further study options.
“We need people to apply across the board,” Mrs Vallance said.
“We won’t hand out funds willy-nilly, but we are interested in any worthwhile application that is going to benefit dairy farmers, the dairy industry and dairy communities.”
DDF is about half-way through its expected 10-year duration but it hasn’t allocated half of its funds.
Mrs Vallance said the funds had been well invested and were generating sound income which provides even more opportunities for potential applicants.
“We’ve got till the funds run out but it looks like we’re going to continue for longer than anticipated because people aren’t taking up these grant and scholarship prospects,” she said.
“You wouldn’t think it would be hard to
give money away, but people don’t think their ideas are worth considering or they don’t think they should seek support to undertake further study.
“Having a streamlined application process may be an impetus to help people take the next step in their agribusinesses.
“The DDF Board wants to continue supporting our regional dairy industry and encourages more individuals, groups or industry stakeholders to apply for funding that could deliver direct benefits to other dairy farmers and our wider dairy community.
More information can be found at https://www.demodairy.com.au/ scholarships-and-grants/ or from DDF secretary Ian Teese on 0427 358987 or itag@bigpond.com.

Dairy future for Noah
KOROIT teenager Noah Billings never expected to find himself working on a dairy farm.
While Koroit is surrounded by prime dairy country, Noah was a town lad and had little cause to visit a farm.
However, a chance conversation with a cricket teammate sent him to a calf shed three years ago and he’s never looked back. With support from a DemoDAIRY Foundation scholarship, Noah is now working with Eddie and Lisa Dwyer at their Purnim farm.
He has progressed from feeding the calves on Saturday mornings through a school-based apprenticeship to working full-time and completing his Certificate III in agriculture.
While his former school mates eyed careers in other directions, 17-year-old Noah said he had found his niche and planned to continue working in the dairy industry.
“A friend I played cricket with asked me if I wanted to come out here on Saturday mornings and help with the calf feeding and it all went from there,” Noah said.
“I’d just feed the calves and do random jobs on Saturday morning and then go and play cricket or football.”
His friend no longer works on the farm but Noah was keen to progress in the industry.
“Eddie and Lisa asked if I wanted to go on a school-based traineeship. That was Mondays
on the farm and I’d go to South West TAFE on Thursdays. Then when I finished year 11 I started full-time last October and I’m now doing my Certificate III.”
While admitting being a bit nervous around the big Friesian cows when he started, Noah now feels at home working with the livestock.
“I like being outside and doing something different every day; everything from fencing and tractor work to feeding the calves and milking,” he said.
“Eddie is great and I’m learning a lot.
“Mum and dad drive me to work every day, which they don’t mind, but I’m looking forward to getting my licence.”
Noah is happy to recommend other young people look at a career in agriculture.
He said the DemoDAIRY Foundation was a big help in not only subsidising his study and purchase of work gear, but in giving him encouragement to pursue a career in agriculture.
People interested in careers in agriculture can visit www.demodairy.com.au to find out about scholarships.

Call out for singers
THE 2023 Warrnambool Organ Festival is calling for singers to join its choir for a performance of the much-loved Requiem by Gabriel Faure.
Composed in the late 1800s, the Requiem is possibly Faure’s best-known work, and represents a rewarding challenge for choristers.
The Warrnambool Organ Festival performance will feature ex-Warrnambool organist Craig Doherty playing the mighty Fincham and Hobday organ at St Joseph’s Church, alongside two vocal soloists from Melbourne and the festival choir. Alongside the Requiem, there will also
be two English choral works by Herbert Howells and S.S. Wesley.
The combined power of the organ and the festival choir should result in a huge sound resonating through the historic building.
Rehearsals for the project will be under the direction of festival director Patrick Burns, who has conducted local choirs and performances as part of the organ festival for the past few years.
“This will be a wonderful project to relaunch the Warrnambool Organ Festival Choir and bring together singers from right across the region to perform some wonderful works that are very dear to me,” Mr Burns said.
The festival choir is a non-auditioned choir, and everyone is welcome to join and be a part of what will be a fantastic night of music.
The performance will take place on Saturday September 9 at 7:30pm.
Rehearsals will be held on weekends in the lead up to the performance and performers are asked to make a small contribution of $10 to help cover the cost of printing music scores for the project. For more information, rehearsal dates, and to register your interest please go to the Warrnambool Organ Festival’s facebook page, or send an email to warrnamboolorganfestival@gmail.com.
Reduction burn-offs begin
WITH the easing of fire restrictions, farmers across the district are now undertaking private burnoffs on their properties.
Country Fire Authority (CFA) and partner agencies will be making the most of cooler autumn conditions to conduct fuel reduction burns to lower bushfire risk for communities.
Farmers and private landholders will also take the opportunity to ignite stubble burns on their properties.
Combined with weather conditions that will prevent smoke from dispersing into the upper atmosphere, it’s predicted that smoke may hang over the
district throughout these periods.
CFA Chief officer Jason Heffernan said although CFA and Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) work closely with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and Bureau of Meteorology to keep smoke impact as low as practically possible, smoke in our regional and rural areas can come from a number of sources.
“Along with the important planned burns that are conducted in our forests, parks and reserves led by FFMV and the many kilometres of road, rail and grassland burns that are led by the CFA, this time of year also sees a large amount of smoke coming from the necessary burnoffs that our farmers and rural
property holders complete,” he said.
“These are part of traditional farming practices where burning off of crop stubble is often needed to kill off weeds and return nutrients and carbon back into the soil.”
As the weather cools, smoke will also come from the many thousands of wood heaters households rely on for their autumn and winter heat source. Smoke from wood heaters will often settle in the local area from where they are burning.
“This localised smoke or smoke haze can often be misinterpreted as coming from planned burns from a long way away, but this is not always the case,” chief officer
Heffernan said.
“As the weather conditions continue to become favourable for lower intensity burning, we will look to conduct the most suitable burn-offs to ensure that our dependent native bush and grasslands are benefitting and avoid much more devastating high intensity bushfires.
“We rely upon all Victorians to spread the message and continue to support us in the delivery of our burning programs.”
Although fire restrictions have ended to an end, residents are urged to continue registering their burn-offs at www.firepermits.vic. gov.au so that if someone reports smoke to Triple Zero, the incident will be cross-checked with the
burn-off register.
For the latest information about when and where planned burns are occurring near you, residents are encouraged to sign up to Planned Burns Victoria at www. plannedburns.ffm.vic.gov.au and download the App.
If you see smoke and want to know if it is a planned burn or a fire, visit emergency.vic.gov.au, check the VicEmergency App or call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226.
Visit www.epa.vic.gov.au/ for-community/airwatch for information about current air quality throughout Victoria. Tips for looking after your health when there is smoke can also be found on EPA’s website.

Tower hill reserve closed to hunting
TOWER Hill Wildlife Reserve will be among the wetlands closed or partially closed to hunting for the 2023 duck season.
Game Management Authority announced the closures last week in a bid to prevent disturbance to a significant number of threatened species.
Tower Hill State Game Reserve will be closed to protect blue-billed ducks and blue-winged shovelers.
A total of 14 wetlands across Victoria will be closed, including three others that are routinely closed each year to reinforce their wildlife sanctuary status.
The wetlands to be closed to hunting include Lake Elingamite (near Cobden), Lake Goldsmith State Game Reserve (west of Ballarat), Lake Natimuk (near Horsham), Bryan Swamp State Game Reserve (northwest of Dunkeld) and the Green Swamp State Game Reserve (east of Dunkeld).
Also listed on the partial closures were Lake Murphy State Game Reserve (south
Funding call for highway
of Kerang), Gaynor Swamp State Game Reserve (west of Shepparton) and Reedy Lake State Game Reserve (near Nagambie).
Signage will be installed to alert hunters to the closures. Other wetlands may be closed or further regulated if significant concentrations of rare or threatened species are found.
Hunters should regularly check the GMA website for updates to wetland closures at https://bit.ly/3MqNjLb.
Hunters are reminded the start time is 8am for every day of the season, from Wednesday this week to Tuesday, May 30.
The daily bag limit is four game ducks per person, per day.
The blue-winged shoveler and hardhead must not be hunted in Victoria this year.
Authorities from a range of agencies will be patrolling wetlands to ensure hunters act in a safe and responsible manner.
For more information on wetland closures, visit gma. vic.gov.au.
SOUTH West Coast MP Roma Britnell has called on the State Government to fund much-needed repairs to the Hopkins Highway.
Ms Britnell said she was deeply concerned about the lack of investment in key regional roads.
“Despite repeated calls from the South West Coast community, the Andrews Government has failed to allocate any funds to several critical roads, which are vital for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods in the region,” she said.
“Only 3.1km of the WoolsthorpeHeywood Road has been repaired, despite the desperate need for extensive repairs and upgrades to the entire road network.”
Ms Britnell said a number of road projects across the south west needed to be prioritised ahead of the May budget.
Premier Daniel Andrews has foreshadowed cuts to spending, saying the government would have to make some really difficult choices.
But Ms Britnell said south west roads could not be neglected without putting lives at risk.
“The neglect of these roads by the Andrews Labor Government is simply unacceptable,” she said.
BACKYARD SAND & SOIL
“The people of South West Coast rely on these roads every day, and the lack of investment is putting their safety and livelihoods at risk.
“The Hopkins Highway is in urgent need of repair and upgrade, yet the Andrews Labor Government has chosen to turn a
blind eye to the issue.”
Ms Britnell said it was time for the Victorian Government to act.
“Our region deserves better,” she said.
“I call on Daniel Andrews to take immediate action and allocate funds for these vital upgrades before it’s too late.”

An open letter to Treasurer Jim Chalmers regarding the Budget
Dear Dr Chalmers, Thereʼs a crisis in our country you can fix in your first budget, at no extra cost.
With the stroke of a pen you could help secure the future of critical regional news services, using money already allocated in the budget.
All you need to do is allocate a fairer percentage of the federal governmentʼs advertising budget to local and regional news services, rather than spending almost all of it with corporate capital city media and foreign-owned digital platforms (which donʼt produce any content or employ any journalists).
This can be achieved by simply adopting the Victorian Govt policy that mandates a weekly full page government advertisement in every regional and community paper.
Local and regional newspapers connect more than 80% of the country, but they get almost 0% of the government advertising spend.
In an era where false news spreads faster on social media than the truth does, trusted local news services reach more regional Australians than any other medium. And unlike other media, every government dollar spent with a local newspaper is also an investment in regional journalism jobs. This shouldnʼt be controversial.
A recent parliamentary inquiry recommended that a minimum of 20% of government print advertising should be placed with regional news services. A recent study conducted by Deakin University recommended the same thing. In fact, the Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland, has been advocating for more regional newspaper advertising for many years. We know there may be bigger budget issues, but this small policy change would be a simple and fair solution to a growing problem for regional Australia. A policy that ensures weekly federal government advertising is placed in regional newspapers would be great news for the country. And it wonʼt cost you a cent.
Yours sincerely,
Tony Kendall President Managing Director Country Press Australia Australian Community Media

Colour explosion
THE end of term one was a fun and colourful one for many Koroit children.
A special ‘colour explosion’ day saw children from Koroit and District Primary School join with those from the local kindergarten, as well as Honeypot Early Learning Centre, for some fun-filled laps of the school oval.
Hay bales, a water park and various obstacles proved a whole lot of fun for participants as they tried to complete as many laps as possible – all the while raising some valuable funds for new outdoor furniture at the school.
The children were joined by several staff and community members who also braved the obstacles – while being sprayed with coloured powder.

DETAILED SALEYARD REPORT by MLA’s
YARDING 943 CHANGE 257 less Mortlake agents yarded 945 cattle today which consisted of a majority of 570 cows offered along with 260 trade and 120 manufacturing types. The quality was from good to plain, however, some very good beef cows were on offer along with grown steers which were mainly the manufacturing type. There was a good top in the trade section. Not all processors were present and restocker interest was restricted. The market was much more subdued resulting in a softer market in places.
Cows were firm to slightly easier and more so on the heavier end. Trade cattle were some 15 to 20c/kg cheaper whilst the manufacturing type remained firm. The pick of the veal sold to 405c/kg whilst the yearling steers and heifers sold from 282 to 407c/kg. Grown steers and heifers topped at 396c/kg. Manufacturing steers were from 280 to 355c/kg. Good heavy beef cows sold from 272 to 328c/kg with the medium weights from 245 to 270c/kg. The better covered dairy breeds realized 262 to275c/kg

Gold for Mermaids
WARRNAMBOOL Mermaids’ under 12 girls have brought home gold from the Junior Country Championships.
The division one team went through last week’s three-day tournament undefeated before overcoming a strong Traralgon T-Birds side in the grand final to win by four points, 42-38.
“Our team is extremely
even and that worked to our advantage,” co-coach Louise Brown said.
“Both Mia Mills and myself, as joint coaches, were very proud of all the girls; they worked very hard across the tournament and were rewarded.”
The three-day tournament, which was held in Bendigo and begun last Friday, attracted teams from across the state.
The Mermaids won their way
through to the finals having defeated Swan Hill 46-25, Hamilton 34-22, Pakenham 4139, Warragul 36-25, Bacchus Marsh 51-32 and Geelong United 52-34.
In the first round of finals, the Mermaids defeated Pakenham 48-40 before going on to defeat Warragul in the semi-final 3831 - earning a spot in the grand final against the Traralgon T-Birds.
“The girls were thrilled to make the grand final and even more excited to win it,” Brown said.
“We’re extremely proud of all 10 girls in the squad.”
In the grand final match, the points were shared between players with Vivienne Smedts scoring 16 points, Ellie Dobson 9, Molly McNeil 6, Hannah Ragg 4, Holly Woodward 4, Sophie Byrne 2 and Starla Lilley 1.

Work begins at Brierly Reserve
WORK has begun on stage one of the Brierly Recreation Reserve redevelopment project.
The existing and outdated pavilion at the reserve will soon be demolished, marking the beginning of on-site stage one work.
According to Warrnambool City Council, design work is currently underway for an upgrade which will include the playing field on the eastern oval – which will incorporate two fullsized football pitches with a synthetic cricket wicket in between.
This will allow both Brierly Chris Church Cricket Club and Warrnambool Rangers Football Club to host matches at the venue.
The redevelopment will also include drainage, sub-surface irrigation, fencing and lighting with a capacity of 200 lux. The construction of these elements will start later this year, with completion anticipated to be mid-2024.
In October 2022 the Victorian Government, through its Local Sports Infrastructure Fund, committed $1 million for stage one of the redevelopment.
Council will also contribute up to $1 million for this stage.
Warrnambool mayor Cr Debbie Arnott said partnerships were vital to deliver significant upgrades such as this.
“Without partnerships with the State Government, it’s a lot harder to get projects off the ground so we really appreciate their support,” she said.
“This is going to give this growing neighbourhood better amenity and encourage more people from across Warrnambool to play sport.
“As a council we encourage good health, so it’s important to invest in recreation facilities. Exercise is not only good physically, it’s good mentally and it helps young people develop team spirit. Sport on any level is good for the community.”
Warrnambool Rangers coach and
committee member Garrett Wyse said the move to a new home venue at Brierly would be a huge boost for the club.
“We will be able to host NPL (National Premier League) games here, and the standard is so high that A-League teams can actually train,” he said.
“We’ve been very limited over the past years with how many could participate at training, and we’ll move to a level where basically any team that wants to train on any night the pitches will be available.
“The participation of the girls should increase, the participation of the teenagers should increase, but also
with the Miniroos we have coming through, they will now see a great future with the club.
“Not just for us, but for when other teams visit, there will be state of the art pitches, and hopefully in the long term we can hold some competitions here.”
Brierly Christ Church Cricket Club vice-president Lachie Rooke said the club was eagerly awaiting the upgrade.
“It’s really special,” he said.
"It’s going to mean a lot not only for the members involved now, but for future members as well.
“And just for the area too, it’s going to be huge for this end of town and hopefully we can create a bit of a
Saker to lead Nestles
ROBERT Saker will lead the Nestles Cricket Club for the next two seasons.
Saker was recently announced as club coach for seasons 2023-24 and 24-25.
Saker joined the club last season and was quick to impress his team-mates with his skills and knowledge of the game.
He comes to the role with extensive experience in Victorian Premier Cricket with Carlton and Northcote and most recently played for Ulladulla United and Violet Town cricket clubs.
Club president Gary MacLean said the Nestles committee was ecstatic Saker had agreed to guide the club through a new era after its success under Alex Strauch.
“The Factory can’t wait to get the next season underway under the leadership of Rob and Jacob Hetherington,” MacLean said.
partnership with Rangers too and get some soccer kids into cricket and viceversa.”
Brierly Christ Church Cricket Club treasurer Matt Colla agreed a redeveloped Brierly Reserve was great news for the local community.
“It’s a great thing for the community and a great thing for the area,” he said. “We’ve got houses all around us now that we never had 20 years ago.
“We’ve been very excited about this day for a long time and the club will do very well with the new facilities.”

Town race-ready
WARRNAMBOOL is gearing up to host yet another May Racing Carnival.
The three-day event will see the town come alive next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The TAB Warrnambool May Racing Carnival is one of Australia’s hallmark country racing events, produced by the Warrnambool Racing Club.
Since its inception, the event continues to attract thousands of racing enthusiasts keen to view Australasia’s premier jumps horses and to be inspired by autumn race fashions – all the while enjoying country hospitality.
The carnival is a celebration of country racing, offering 23 flat races and seven jumps races including the internationally acclaimed Grand Annual
Steeplechase (first held in 1872). With all marquee and dining packages now sold out, and only general admission tickets still available, organisers are confident huge crowds will once again flock to the track to witness what will no doubt be quality fields across all races. Fashionistas of all ages will again make a notable presence trackside on Thursday, with entries in the Miss Kit Fashions on the Field again expected to be one of the highlights of the carnival.
With five race wear categories and some fantastic prizes to be won, it’s no wonder the carnival attracts entries from across the state.
Entries will be accepted online until 12noon next Monday, or at the track on Thursday between 10am-11.30am. All entrants must be 18 years and older.

Jump trials a success
TERANG’S first-time hosting hurdle trials has proven a success, as the club casts its eyes on welcoming future opportunities.
Eight trials were on the card at Terang racecourse last Friday, giving racing teams the opportunity to qualify or trial ahead of the Warrnambool May Racing Carnival.
Racing Victoria announced in March the hurdle trials would be moved from Warrnambool to Terang, with two sessions transferred on March 29 and April 21 due to an ongoing inside grass project being undertaken by Warrnambool Racing Club.
Terang and District Racing Club president Shane Scally said the move was a boost for the town and the racing club.
“Having the hurdle trials is a bit of a plus for Terang,” he said.
“We haven’t had hurdle trials in the past but this is the second set we’ve run this year as people get ready for Warrnambool.
“We had trainers, riders and owners come from all over Victoria to qualify the horses for jumps races, or to give them a trial ahead of the Warrnambool May Racing carnival.
“There’s a lot of horses, 50 to 60, to trial which is good to show we can use a facility like Terang for the benefit of racing – particularly jumps racing.” Scally said the day had run smoothly, with the club receiving positive feedback from all involved.
“It was good, we had a lot of horses and trainers from all over, and everyone was quite happy,” he said.
“The racers had course proper, which was an added advantage, so we feel everything went quite good.” Scally said he would welcome the opportunity for Terang to host more jumps events, including trials, in to the future.
“It’s the first time doing it, but we’re quite happy to be involved in the future if the opportunity arose,” he said.
“It has been a good opportunity to not only showcase the facilities, but to help trainers prepare.” Scally credited grounds staff for the quality of the track, which he felt held up strong after hosting the Terang Cup the week earlier.
Terang and District Racing Club president Shane Scally was thrilled with the success of recent jump trials at Terang and has eyed further opportunities in the future.
“Terang is an ideal surface for jumpers, it has to be soft,” he said.
“We’re lucky to have good ground staff who know how to look after this track.”
Orford and District table tennis
THERE was not much joy for the home teams in the opening week of the Orford and District Table Tennis Association.
Warrnambool Vikings continue in the same position they finished last season - on top.
Week two sees some interesting games with the two Warrnambool teams meeting and the Myndarra/ Orford match.
Warrnambool Warriors v Warrnambool Vikings - when these two teams met in last year’s grandfinal they were both fielding different combinations.
The Vikings two remaining players in Dom and Rehan are a stronger pair than Peter Owen and Neil Ford. Even without a third player, the Warrnambool Vikings will come out on top in this grand final replay.
Myndarra v Orford - Aaron Rowbottom from Myndarra will likely win his three rubbers, but can he influence the
doubles enough for them to win both?
One yes, two not quite yet.
This will leave Orford’s Russel Hussey, Jayden Clapp and David Rowbottom with a sniff of the four points.
Attunga v Tarrone - the Attunga combination will be too strong for Tarrone.
Glengleeson v Port Fairy - Port Fairy should post its first four points with a win over Glengleeson.
Ray Young, Wayne Krause and Tone Storer who is returning to play against his old team (clearance papers filed or does the year out count?) will be too strong for Gareth Spring, Bill Lyons and Lyndsay Morton.
Results from week one were as follows:
Warrnambool Vikings defeated Glengleeson 10.32/1.3 - Dom and Rehan both won their three rubbers with Warrnambool Vikings stating their power for this season.
Gareth Spring was Glengleeson’s winner when he defeated Giles 12/10,
11/4, 6/11 & 11/8.
Giles went on to win over Bill Lyon in the other extended rubber of the night. Orford lost to Warrnambool Warriors 4.13/7.27 after searching for a third player, a new retiree to Port Fairy wondered into the Orford Hall, only to be snatched up by Warrnambool Warriors (team solved).
Marshall Worthington was then supplied with a bat and pointed towards a table.
With four rubbers extended and a high game of 18/16 the moths were certainly let out and it will be interesting to hear how well all players moved the next day.
Warriors’ Peter Owen won his three rubbers, while Russel Hussey was Orford’s best with two rubbers. Tarrone lost to Myndarra 6.20.329/5.15.312.
One of the first close encounters of the season, Myndarra getting home with Aaron Rowbottom winning his three
rubbers, Ally two and a doubles. Myndarra’s Nick Bartlett was unlucky not to win a rubber going down to Steven Young 4/11, 4/11, 12/10, 11/8 and 12/10 in the last rubber of the night, where only one other was extended. Port Fairy lost to Attunga 3.13/8.30 With five extended rubbers and the highest game score of the night 16/14, Attunga worked for its win.
Wayne Krause of Port Fairy defeated Val Wortley in a four-game rubber and Val also lost to Ray Young in four.
Kelly Wortley from Attunga was the three-rubber winner, after defeating Tony Storer 6/11, 7/11, 11/7, 11/8 and 11/9 in the last rubber.
The un-official ladder: Warrnambool Vikings 4 points, 10 rubbers, 32 games; Attunga 4, 8, 30; Warrnambool Warriors 4, 7, 27; Myndarra 4, 6, 20; Tarrone 0, 5, 15; Orford 0, 4, 13; Port Fairy 0, 3, 13; Glengleeson 0, 1, 3.
