Festival of fun
THIS month’s Koroit Irish Festival looks set to be “a whole lot of fun” according to event organisers.
Festival president Adele MacDonald said the organising committee’s intentions for the April 2830 event was to provide visitors with “the best, fun weekend.”
With more than 4000 people expected to attend and enjoy the celebrations, world-class Irish music and dancing will again be a feature - alongside comedy, trivia and art, all with a Koroit-Irish theme.
One of the most popular parts of the festival will again be the Village Green program.
As well as taking in music all day on the brand new community stage, festival patrons can be part of the action by joining in on some popular Irish-based
novelty activities.
These will include the Flaming Folk Parade (for redheads), A Gathering of Green Eyes, Australia’s Most Irish Name, Irish Soda Bread competition and Irish Fashions on the Field.
And it wouldn’t be the Koroit Irish Festival without the iconic Spud Trilogy - which includes picking, peeling and eating competitions involving Koroit and Ireland’s most famous vegetable.
“The Village Green on the Saturday afternoon is just magic; so much fun,” Mrs MacDonald said.
“It really encompasses what the festival is all about, everyone loves it.”
Mrs MacDonald will be joined in hosting the Village Green activities by fellow committee members Kyra Gillespie and Isabella Dare.
There will also be a specially designated kids area on the Village Green.
The opening night concert on the Friday is now sold out but tickets are still available for the Saturday and Sunday.
An adult ticket is $25 while under 18s are free - but must still book their ticket.
Tickets are available at www.koroitirishfestival.com.
au
“We encourage people to get their tickets online before the festival, just in case we sell out,” Mrs MacDonald said.
“For those not so confident about booking online, grab a friend or family member to help you out.
“We want everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful festival.”

Works continue to limit performance
V/LINE surpassed its reliability performance target during March for the fourth consecutive month, but punctuality slumped again as temporary speed restrictions remain in place.
speed restrictions implemented following poor weather in the region.
The WarrnamboolWeekly is a member of the Regional Media Connect.
Reliability performance on the Warrnambool line was 97.8 per cent during March, exceeding the 96 per cent reliability target for the fourth consecutive month.
Of the 274 services scheduled to operate on the Warrnambool line, just six were unable to run for all or part of the journey.
The montly punctuality result stood at 68.6 per cent, which a V/Line spokesperson said was a result of a number of factors contributing to delays including a train fault at Southern Cross Station and trespassing incidents.
Services on the Warrnambool line have been impacted by temporary
Some of these restrictions will be lifted following important maintenance works to some of the worst affected sections of track during upcoming V/ Line works in April and May. As part of these works, 1700 concrete sleepers are being installed in four locations.
“The Warrnambool line continued its strong recent reliability results in March, with 97.8 per cent of services delivered – the fourth consecutive month of strong reliability on the line since services were increased,” the spokesperson said.
“Crews will complete important maintenance works over the coming weeks, which are critical for the ongoing upkeep of the line and will see the removal of temporary speed restrictions along some sections of track.”
Some delays are expected to continue when rail services return, as trains slow
down at various locations between Marshall and Warrnambool to protect the safety of construction workers and passengers while other upgrade and improvement works continue along sections of the line.
Upgrades are continuing on both the Geelong and Warrnambool lines throughout Autumn, with coaches replacing trains on sections of the line until Wednesday, May 3 for level crossing removal works at Deer Park, V/Line annual maintenance works and construction on the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds duplication.
The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds duplication will deliver more than 8kms of duplicated track, providing additional places for trains to pass each other between Waurn Ponds and South Geelong, reducing the risk of delays in this busy section for Warrnambool line trains.

WRAD CEO to retire
WRAD Health’s longest serving CEO Geoff Soma will end a 23year career with the organisation at the end of June.
Mr Soma, who turns 70 next month, will retire after having overseen WRAD Health’s growth from 10 to 38 staff plus seven contractors delivering a much wider range of health services across the region.
He has been a staunch advocate for developing local health services and changing community attitudes to support people with substance misuse issues.
“It has been a wonderful career working with great people providing services to our important client group,” Mr Soma said.
“There have been many achievements along the way and I am very proud of where WRAD Health is today and what we stand for.”
WRAD Health operations manager Mark Powell will be acting CEO from July 1. “WRAD Health is in good hands with skilled staff and a very supportive and dedicated committee of management,” Mr Soma said.
WRAD Health committee of management chairperson Helen Taylor paid tribute to Mr Soma, describing him as the driving force behind the organisation’s commitment to improving health outcomes for the region.
“Geoff came with fresh ideas and a great deal of experience in managing drug and alcohol-related issues and he has been terrific in his leadership role over the past 23 years,” she said.
“He has an uncanny ability to manage finances and he was able to support WRAD Health to develop many new programs to support people in our community.
“Geoff was able to attract a variety of skilled and capable staff and juggle all kinds of different roles very successfully to ensure WRAD Health has moved forward.”
Mr Soma says he was most proud of developing WRAD’s position in the community, its broad range of services and its ability to influence community perceptions about substance use.
“There is now greater acceptance of substance misuse as a health issue and that has been incredibly important,” he said.
“The community has embraced that and attitudes have improved for the better.”
Mr Soma said the development of integrated wrap-around services, including having clinical, medical, psychiatric, dual diagnosis and social workers based at the same centre, had
been beneficial for the local community.
In recent years, key improvements have included the development of outreach services for clients with substance misuse issues, the growth in medical and allied health services, including more GPs, psychiatrists, consultant psychologists, developing wall murals, documenting recovery stories, recruiting Paul Jennings and Archie Roach as patrons, and the introduction of an after-hours service.
“I think it’s great that we have a bulk billing medical practice providing accessible health care for clients,” he said.
Mr Soma will remain a strong campaigner for the Lookout Rehabilitation Centre.
“People need to be supported within their communities,” he said.
“The Lookout is a worthwhile project, especially for Indigenous clients who want treatment on country.
“I think we’re getting close and that it will happen in the near future.
“We need to keep pushing for this important service for our region and will continue to communicate with the Department of Health and other key political allies.”
He says the time was right to retire after his career had taken him overseas and across Victoria.
“I have been doing this for a long time and have been a manager since 1985 in Melbourne, New Zealand and now Warrnambool,” he said.
“It’s time to be doing other things, such as walking, gardening, reading, music, spending time with family and hopefully some travel.”
Working with people battling substance misuse issues can be challenging and stressful, but Mr Soma has always focused on the positives.
“Regularly I hear something positive about what clients have achieved by using one of our services and we make a difference in our community,” he said.
“I think we contribute to the social fabric of the community in that we provide essential support so that people can affect change.”
Mr Soma started as WRAD director on August 2, 2000 but his career in the field stems back to 1984.
Mr Powell, who has been operations manager for three years, will be acting CEO for 12 months.
“It is a significant time of change for the agency after a period of significant growth so I aim to consolidate on what WRAD Health has achieved and continue to advocate for a full suite of services to serve the needs of the community,” he said.

Motorists urged to report damage
SOUTH West Coast MP Roma Britnell has launched a new web portal encouraging members of the community to report damage south west roads have caused to their vehicle.
The ‘Report a Road’ web portal, attached to Ms Britnell’s website, calls on the community to submit evidence of damage their vehicles have sustained on south west roads.
“Victorian roads are crumbling due to Labor’s neglect and mismanagement,” the site reads.
“These terrible roads are damaging your vehicles and many people are contacting me to complain about the costs incurred as a result,” the web portal states.
“I need your evidence. Send me your costs and a photo of the damage so I can take it to the Premier.
“I will continue to hold Daniel Andrews and Labor accountable for the dangerous roads and the damage they are causing to our vehicles.”
The launch of the web portal comes after Ms Britnell has prioritised the state of roads in the South West Coast this year as the Victorian Budget looms.
She has spoken on the state of roads during most Victorian Parliament sittings this year and has repeatedly called on Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for
Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne to visit the region and experience the roads first hand.
Ms Britnell said she had been an advocate for action to be taken on roads for years, calling for better road maintenance and repairs.
She has arguing aging infrastructure was a major safety hazard for motorists, and damage arising from the sub-standard state of roads was a significant drain on household and business budgets due to the cost of vehicle repairs.
“‘Report a Road’ is a crucial tool for South West Coast residents to hold the Andrews Government accountable for maintaining the Victorian road network,” Ms Britnell said.
“Our roads are in a terrible state and it’s time the Andrews Labor Government did something about it.
“The damage details provided by ‘Report a Road’ is one way we can embarrass Daniel Andrews into action.”
The ‘Report a Road’ webportal may be accessed at https://romabritnell.com.au/ report-a-road/.

Speakers needed
SOUTH West Victoria regional representative body, Food and Fibre Great South Coast, has called for speakers to present at the organisation’s annual sustainable energy forum to be held at Deakin University on July 19.
Following last years’ landmark showcase of local and industry innovations, the Great South Coast Energy Forum will bring together food and fibre, government, commercial and community leaders to discuss latest industry efforts driving forward climate action each year.
Food and Fibre Great South Coast chief executive officer Natalie Collard said the event would pay particular attention to initiatives which make a positive environmental impact across the south west community.
“Last year we showcased incredible leading-edge hydrogen applications being applied across the south west region, including potential applications for dairy, plus net zero commitments and action taken by key livestock and dairy sectors, Wannon Water and forestry,” she said.
“It’s vital that we continue to apply emerging energy solutions to our local environment and we can’t wait to showcase what initiatives industry and local farmers have taken to drive forward sustainable practices across their production.”
The event presents an opportunity to share emerging developments spearheading climate action across the food and fibre industry Australia wide.
“As representatives of the top agricultural production region in Australia, Food and Fibre Great South Coast is serious about promoting long-term, meaningful and coordinated climate action with all actors,” Ms Collard said.
“That means creating opportunities to come together and build consensus around the important issues we face right now, like a fair transition to sustainable energy consumption and production as well as ensuring no member of our community is left behind.”
Speaker submissions are due by Tuesday, May 16 to info@ foodfibregsc.com.au.
Submissions must include your role, organisation and contact information, presentation title, a 100-words-maximum biography, key messages from your presentation, relevance to food and fibre or the south west community, and if you are interested in becoming an event partner.

Murray reaches 40-year milestone
SINNOTTS Accountants
senior partner Murray Whiting celebrated a milestone 40 years with the Warrnambool and Camperdown-based firm this week.
Mr Whiting reached the milestone on Tuesday (April 18) after first joining Sinnotts Accountants in 1983 as a trainee accountant, fresh out of high school, and rising through the ranks to become a partner in 2001.
Mr Whiting said working for a business which provided him opportunities to advance his career had formed the foundations for his professional loyalty.
“It’s a long time but everything feels like it has fallen in to place for me,” he said.
“Every time I’ve needed to progress, an opportunity has opened up.
“I had the opportunity to step up as a senior accountant when I was ready, and the opportunity to become a partner came later on and eventually senior partner.
“It’s a small firm and it hasn’t had the high-pressure some of the other firms have had with big demands; we focus on a family-first, caring approach.”
Mr Whiting has specialised in taxation and business advice through his career, drawing a diverse range of clients over the decades.
The ethos of working with family-run, small businesses, notably within the agricultural industry, was engrained in him from the beginning as a focus for the firm.
He said the opportunity to build a unique connection with the community had perfectly suited his own professional approach.
“When I first started, a familyfocused approach was the attitude of the senior partner, and that’s what we have tried to impart all the way along,” Mr Whiting said.
“That’s been good, I’ve been
able to work with the same clients all the way through.
“In some cases, I now work with third generation clients.
“It’s good to see the next generation coming through, and you get to know those clients and families pretty well.”
While the family-friendly approach has lingered through his years, he acknowledged the rapid development of technology had drastically changed the landscape of the business.
“Obviously technology has been the biggest thing to change, along with legislative changes and different attitudes,” Mr Whiting said.
“We had just one main computer when I started, and then a few years later we had a work station on our desk.
“Now everything runs through technology, and you can’t walk out of the room without it.
“The biggest change has been the progress from the technological side of things.”
In line with many careers, bigger opportunities in bigger markets come with bigger pay, but Mr Whiting said leaving the south west had never interested him.
“I could have got more opportunities and more money at bigger firms but my family is here, my history is here and it’s where I want to stay,” he said.
“I’ve had the opportunity to be involved in the community; you start with the sports clubs, then the kids come along and everything revolves around that, so I’ve gone from preschools to hospitals along the way.
“I’ve been involved in a lot of things along the way, and that’s just a small-town mentality that you get involved.”
Mr Whiting is a father of three, grandfather of two, and said family had always been big for him.
“My attitude is family first, so I get to spend a lot of time with my family,” he said.
Mr Whiting said building a career in an industry based on

passion rather than financial motivation was the secret to success.
“Doing something that you are interested in is the most
important aspect,” he said.
“The financial rewards will come at the end, but if you’re interested in it and work to get good at it, everything else will
look after itself.
“Stick with what you want to do, rather than what you think you should do.”

Cheaper fares raise questions
THE introduction of cheap regional fares on V/Line services began recently after the State Government slashed prices to metropolitan levels, but a south west MP has slammed the cuts as unaffordable.
The cost of a daily ticket on the entire regional Victorian network has now been capped at the same price as metropolitan daily fares – currently $9.20 for a full fare or $4.60 for a concession. On a weekend or public holiday, daily fares are capped at $6.70 and $3.35 for concession.
The cap formed a key election commitment for Daniel Andrews’ reelection bid, vowing savings for regional Victorians while driving tourism to the regions.
The cap also offered families living in rural and regional Victoria more affordable access to visiting loved ones and health and education services in other regional cities and in Melbourne. For those who take long-distance V/ Line journeys, the regional fare cap can save people more than $40 for each and every one-way journey on the regional public transport network.
“We’re delivering for all Victoriansmaking public transport more affordable and accessible to passengers in every corner of our state to ensure they can get to where they need to go,” Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll said. “The regional fare cap will transform
macca’s amusements
Premier Event Amusements
the way Victorians travel – and will also provide a huge benefit to regional tourism and businesses.”
But the opposition has hit out at the changes, citing a Parliamentary Budget Office report which revealed the policy would cost $358.1 million over the next four years, creating a $155 million shortfall.
Shadow Minister for Public Transport Richard Riordan, the member for Polwarth, said the prices cut would be a financial failure which contributes to growing government debt.
“Labor’s financial failure means it can’t afford to keep fares low in the long term,” he said.
“People from every corner of our state deserve cheaper fares and better services to get to important appointments, events or to see friends and family.
“Eight years of mismanagement and incompetence means that important services could be at risk. What services will be cut or when will V/Line fares be increased again?
“Labor is still yet to answer one simple question; how does it intend to deliver cheaper fares indefinitely without raising taxes or cutting jobs to make up the billion-dollar shortfall?”

Cancer battle inspires Katie
FORMER Mother’s Day
Classic committee member Katie Monigatti has returned to the role in 2023, and taken on a new position as Warrnambool’s ambassador.
Mrs Monigatti had been on the committee for three years from 2012 after her mother and grandmother had been through cancer battles, but now she is sharing her own cancer experience as the 2023 classic’s ambassador.
Mrs Monigatti was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2020 and has successfully undergone treatment.
The 2023 Mother’s Day Classic will continue her commitment to advocating for breast cancer care and research.
Over the past 12 months she has done several breast cancer talks and flew to Sydney with the McGrath Foundation for the Pink Test with local breast care nurse Bec Hayes.
“I’ve been an open-book with my experience; I’ll happily share all scars and emotions,” Mrs Monigatti said.
“My mum and grandmother both had bouts with cancer so I knew it was inevitable that one day it could hit me; I just didn’t think I’d be 39-years-old with a three-year-old and a four-month-old.”
Now with the all-clear from cancer, Mrs Monigatti is determined to share her personal perspective to create awareness for vital research funds.
“All the organisations link in but have their own agendas whether it’s to enhance breast cancer treatments or advocate and provide support for patients diagnosed,” she said.
“The Mother’s Day Classic is important to me because the funds raised go directly to research with the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
“Neither myself, mother nor grandmother carry a common gene for breast cancer and we all had different types of cancers.
“Mine was an extremely aggressive form called Triple Negative so it grew quickly which is probably why I noticed
it, but there was no genetic linkage, which is why we need to continue research to prevent it for future generations.”
Mrs Monigatti’s husband Kelvin and daughters Adeline and Eloise will also take part in the walk.
Previous ambassadors were the Hintum family (2015), Leah McNeil (2017), Anne McGrath (2018) and Deanne Evans (2019).
The Warrnambool Mother’s Day Classic will be held on Sunday, May 14, starting from the carnival site in Pertobe Road at 9am for the 7km run and 9.05am for the 3km walk.
People can enter online via https://www. mothersdayclassic.com.au/vic-warrnambool or on-theday registrations are available from 8am.

Jack and Jills of all trades
FROM broken bikes and holes in need of a mend, through to blunt knives and garden clippers, volunteers were faced with a variety of repairs last weekend.
It was a case of ‘many hands make light work’ at the Port Fairy Repair Café on Saturday, with 20 volunteers tending to the needs of visitors throughout the day.
The repair café – an iconic part of the seaside town that offers repairs of all sorts – is open at Railway Place on the third Saturday of each month for two hours from 10am.
Last weekend saw more than 30 items repaired, sharpened and mended.
Items included a mix master, a lamp, jewellery, ukulele, bikes, clothing, a kit surfing bag, as well as garden clippers, knives and secateurs.
“We had 20 visitors to the café who came from as far away as Macarthur and Purnim, as well as Warrnambool, Koroit and Port Fairy,” coordinator Natasha Mills said.
“We get a huge range of items at our repair events, and we never quite know what people are going to bring in which is all part of the challenge.
“There’s not much we wouldn’t have a go at. It gives us such a buzz every time we service, clean, mend or fix something.”

Saints return
REIGNING premiers Koroit returned to the winners’ list last weekend, with a 99-point win over Portland.
Coming off two consecutive losses – the first in round one against Cobden and the second, played against the Roosters on Good Friday – the Saints were keen to get some points on the ladder and went in to last weekend’s game with added incentive.
The home side gave spectators plenty to cheer about from the first bounce, making good use of the footy and taking advantage of turnovers.
Jack Block, Thomas Baulch, Paddy O’Sullivan, Liam Hoy, Jyron Neave and Clem Nagorcka were among the best for the home side, while for the visitors Jake Wilson, Toby Jennings, Josh Edwards, Daniel Falcone, Karsen Edwards and Harry Kerr were regular contributors.
Final scores were Koroit 20.11.131 to Portland 5.2.32.
Goals for the home side went to Jyron Neave and Paddy O’Sullivan with four each, Liam Hoy (3), James Cow (2), Mac Petersen (2), Nathan Rentsch (2) and Taylor McKenry.
Earlier in the day, the Saints’ reserves side set the momentum for the day with a 40-point win over the Tigers, 11.11.77 to 5.7.37.
Matthew Bradley (four goals), Samuel Marsh, Kyle Moloney, Josh Purcell and Jesse Farley were standouts for the Saints while for the visitors, Toby Oakley, Zac Stuchbery, Nathan Valori, Sharn Robinson, Hayden Annett and Will Oakley were among the best.
On the netball courts at Koroit, player unavailability forced Portland to forfeit its open grade clash with the Saints.
Other results from the day’s play included:
Division one – Koroit defeated Portland 58-27.
Division two – Portland defeated Koroit 35-32.
Division three – Koroit defeated Portland 39-25.
Junior results were as follows: 17 and under – Koroit defeated Portland 57-20; 15 and under – Koroit defeated Portland 33-9; 13 and under – Koroit defeated Portland 37-6.
In other round two Hampden League senior football matches, the Roosters enjoyed a 75-point win over Camperdown, Cobden outclassed Hamilton by 116 points, the Blues were 16-point victors over the Seagulls and Terang Mortlake finished 62 points on top of the Eagles.

THE final race meeting for season 2023 at the Terang race course will forever hold a special place in the hearts of local trainers Denis Daffy and granddaughter Harriet Place.
The veteran horseman was brought to tears last Sunday when his recent stable acquisition, Port Louis, took home the 1200m Westmeath Handicap on Cup Day.
The win was the first for Daffy in partnership with his granddaughter. And what a special moment it was for them both.
“I’m very, very proud,” Daffy said. “He (Port Louis) is a horse we picked up thanks to Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and the only one we currently have in work.”
Reflecting on the win earlier this week, 22 year-old Place said she was “absolutely stoked” to have shared the moment with her beloved Pop.
“Over the years I’ve helped Pop train lots of winners so I honestly didn’t think it would mean quite so much – but it certainly did,” she said.
“This was our first win in partnership and I could not have been any more proud; it was really, really special.”
The bond between the two generations was clearly evident at the track, with a few tears shed.
“It’s been a pretty rough few months but this (win) almost makes it all worthwhile,” Place said.
“We’ve been at rock bottom lately; we lost our best horse in our stable, Overkill, a couple of weeks ago which was really sad and we’ve been finding it an absolute battle to get horses galloped.”
Terang and District Racing Club
president Shane Scally congratulated the pair on the victory.
“It was one of the highlights of the meeting,” Scally said.
“Denis and Harriot securing their first winner trained in partnership was quite good to see.”
AARON Rowbottom has taken the win in the opening tournament of the Orford and District Table Tennis Association.
David Warhurst and Russell Hussey enjoyed a close battle in the preliminary final. Over a four game rubber, one game being 10-all, David came out victorious and earnt a place in the final against Aaron – who had earlier defeated Val Wortley.
Lucky door prizes, donated by Warrnambool Football Club, were won by Jayden Clapp, Ian Wortley and Tony Storer.
Homeand away pennant competition matches are played on the tables of the home team (named first), with the main venues being the Orford Hall and Warrnambool table tennis stadium.
This is a big improvement from when the association
Daffy and Place are now looking at the possibility Port Louis could line up in the Wangoom during Warrnambool’s May Carnival.
“At this stage, if he does get a run it will be a step-up in class for him,” Place said.
“Those horses are higher rated but we’ll see what happens.
“He likes the wet track and day two and three at Warrnambool are usually pretty wet and boggy which would suit. It’s a case of wait and see.”
Special moment for local trainers Victory for Rowbottom
was first formed in the late 1950s. Back then play was mainly in the shearing sheds of the district during the winter months (very cold and breezy), or in garages, footy club rooms, a bowling club or in halls.
Predictions for upcoming matches:
• Warrnambool Vikings v Glengleeson Warrnambool Vikings cut their way through all teams to be premiers last season. Glengleeson may not have the fire power to dint their journey to this year’s final series.
• Orford v Warrnambool Warriors.
Even with a cloud hanging over Warrnambool Warriors as to their team composition, they will still be too strong for Orford who have recruited Russel Hussey after losing Ray Young to Port Fairy.
• Tarrone v Myndarra. Myndarra should have the closest win of the night.
Aaron Rowbottom should win his three rubbers; they will then need to win at least one of the doubles while Ally Rowbottom should win a rubber and will give them a 6/5 result or a slip-up will give Tarrone a 6/5 win.
• Port Fairy v Attunga
New team Port Fairy will be sorely tested by the veteran Attunga side.
Led by Ray Young, who has been trying for a Port Fairy side since moving to the town, he is joined by Wayne Krause and Tony Storer both returning to play in the association.
The Attunga family team of Val, Kelly and Ian Wortley has played together for many years and know each other’s moves, while Port Fairy will need to learn to jell together before they will make a winning combination.

Cameron and Matt Brewer have taken out the Autumn Classic at the Warrnambool Bowls Club.
The three-day classic (pairs event) concluded last Thursday, with the $30,000 event attracting 78 teams from all over Australia.

They were followed by runnersup, Damian Riches and John Carlin (also local bowlers).
Last Friday saw the start of the $15,000 Fours event.
This attracted 30 teams, all competing for the $4000 first prize. This event was won by Scott Boschen, Michael Funcke, Mick Marchment and Warren Perris.
The runners-up (from South

The club also recently hosted the Ian Hatfield Perpetual Cup.
Played on Easter Monday, the cup originated in memory of Ian who was a keen bowler at the Warrnambool club for over 10 years and was well known for his laughter, his wit and his “pun or two”.
After his death in August last year, Ian’s family wanted to remember Ian doing something he loved –and the Ian Hatfield Perpetual Cup begun.
Played on Easter Monday, the $5000 event was run as a typically fun day, which epitomised Ian and his approach to life.
Winners were Alan Sullivan, John Maher and Steven Quinlan.
Runners-up were Neville Mahney, Terry Smith and Ken Mahney.
