Central Ward councillor Laurie Hickey was elected deputy mayor. Cr Makin thanked her fellow councillors for their support and said she was deeply honoured and humbled. “I see our shire’s potential, its aspirations and its challenges,” she said. “Today I don’t promise a miracle but a dedication to serve, to listen and to act with integrity. “As your mayor I envisage a council where every voice matters, where innovation thrives and where progress doesn’t leave anyone behind. “I pledge to foster transparency, encourage collaboration and champion initiatives that propel us towards a brighter, united future. “Together, let’s build a community where each resident feels heard, valued and is proud to call home. “Thank you for your trust and together let’s write the next chapter of our shire’s success story.” Cr Makin said she was committed to fulfilling the responsibilities of the esteemed position with dedication and passion. She thanked outgoing mayor Ruth Gstrein for her leadership over the past three years. “I know I have big shoes to fill and I will try my hardest to fill them,” Cr Makin said. “Thanks also to Cr Geraldine Conheady for her two years in the role of deputy mayor.

“As mayor I promise to be a tireless advocate for every corner of our beautiful shire. “Together let’s work towards fostering a stronger, more connected community where everyone has a voice. Together, let’s make Corangamite an even better place to live, work and thrive.” Cr Hickey congratulated Cr Makin and also thanked his fellow councillors for their support. “I think the deputy mayor role within Corangamite in these next 12 months is going to be pretty import given there’s a lot of budgetary constraints that need to be managed,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of opportunity for new mayor — and when I say new mayor, some of us have only been in council for three years — there’s going to be a requirement for some decent backing and I believe I’m certainly able to bring that to the role. “It is a good opportunity to be able to even further get into the workings of the Corangamite Shire and I would hope, with support of my fellow councillors, I’ll make the deputy mayor role one that supports the community.” Under the local Government Act Council can set the mayoral term for either one or two years. Letters to the Editor Fuel reduction key Dear Sir, In Parliament, I paid tribute to leading bushfire and forestry scientist, Dr Kevin Tolhurst AM, who died recently, and conveyed to his family our sympathy and gratitude for his life and work. In my adjournment matter, I encouraged the Minister for Emergency Services to delve more deeply into Dr Tolhurst’s life’s work and consider his recommendation that bushfire management should have a greater focus on fuel load reduction. Dr Tolhurst repeatedly pointed out the folly in prioritising expensive and difficult suppression

of fire, instead of fuel load management. We cannot control the weather, so reducing fuel load is the land manager’s best hope of mitigating bushfire. He powerfully argued against an influential Climate Council factsheet, which had concluded “no amount of hazard reduction will protect human lives, animals and properties from catastrophic fires” – pointing out that analysing the extent of burned areas, rather than the severity of the fire, is misleading. He said, “the recovery of plants, animals, nutrients and habitat after low-intensity fire is much quicker than after high-intensity wildfire.”

WED DEC 6

5 DAY WEATHER FORECAST

He looked at the total system result, not selective evidence to justify preconceived standpoints. He wrote, “we need to consider all variables. This includes increased ecosystem resilience, mitigation of wildfire number, impact on human health, economic value, social impact, Traditional Owner culture, and more.” These conclusions came from his experiences of the results of fire, the demonstrably successful Western Australian approach to fuel load reduction, and his understanding traditional Indigenous land-management in Australia. Mitigation matters as we cannot be absolutist

Kevin’s last message, to a community forum at Mallacoota just hours before he died, was that with appropriate fuel reduction before the Black Summer bushfire, Mallacoota would not have burned. I asked the Minister to rebalance Victoria’s bushfire planning and management towards the fuel load reduction approach that Kevin did so much to prove superior.

Landcare Vic plan revealed

THE backbone of Victorian Landcare, Landcare Victoria Inc, has released the landcare community’s first 10year plan. The plan has warned a key part of Victoria’s response to biodiversity loss and climate change is at risk without longer-term and greater funding. Launching the plan recently, Landcare Victoria Inc chair Jane Carney said the plan sets out a blueprint for the next decade and was developed in conjunction with Victoria’s Landcare community. “I’m really proud of the plan and the role we can play, but we also have to address the fact that right now our work is at risk,” she said. “Critical to the success of the plan are our 80 local facilitators and 10 regional coordinators who harness the power of tens of thousands of volunteers across more than 600 Victorian Landcare groups and help fill the extension gap left by the government. “The funding the Victorian Government provides to us right now gets extended bitby-bit, year-by-year and is not enough. “That’s why we’re calling for an investment of $48 million over four years towards facilitator and coordinator roles.” Mrs Carney said the funds would allow Landcare Vic Inc to hire 20 new facilitators to share the workload as well “enable us to offer our facilitators and coordinators longer contracts at a fairer wage”. In June the Victorian Government announced an $8.2 million investment in extending the roles of 80 part-time Victorian Landcare Facilitators and 10 Regional Landcare Coordinators, until June 30, 2025. Mrs Carney said while Landcare Victoria appreciated the extension, it was not enough. “We do a lot with a little at Landcare, but we must face facts,” she said. “You can’t keep good people if you don’t give them an adequate wage and anything more than short-term contracts.” The Empowering Landcare Communities – Landcare Plan for Victoria 2023-2033 will support the landcare community to plan for and implement projects which will support biodiversity and landscape restoration and tackle climate change; deliver education and extension; develop best-practice evaluation and grow its partnership and volunteer base. The plan can be viewed here www. landcarevictoria.org.au/landcareplan.

Equine therapy opens up new options SOMETIMES we all need to take a moment to slow down, reflect and enjoy our surroundings. Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) practitioner Sarah Coates has begun practicing at the Pullenboon South Equine Retirement Farm in Timboon with horse Cleopatra. After enjoying generational love for and involvement with horses she hopes to share the joy spending time with horses can bring. “In 2006 I learnt alongside a holistic vet who was teaching intuitive communication with horses,” Ms Coates said. “He was teaching me how to receive those silent communications with horses.” Ms Coates knows only too well how horses have the power to inspire and heal after one of her children was in an accident. “One of my children had a terrible horse riding accident and that left her with a permanent brain injury,” she said. “Her horses at home were what she wanted to come home for.” Ms Coates then started training with the Equine Psychotherapy Institute in 2021 to further extend her knowledge. She said after COVID there were a number of barriers to starting up a business and completing her training leading her to push the idea aside. Moving to Princetown in 2022, Ms Coates then decided to set up Sea Horse Consulting and Learning and now operates just outside of Timboon. “I’m here and I’m ready to take on clients,” she said. EAL sees clients develop new insight and learn skills by interacting with horses. It can assist in personal development, professional development and developing leadership skills in teams and individuals. Ms Coates said when she takes on a new client they talk about what five goals the individual would like to achieve as a result of the sessions. “I don’t do mounted sessions,” she said. “There are over 20 different equine experiences that can be experienced in a session. “It’s (EAL) for people to look at themselves and accept a range of emotions – there’s no good or bad emotions. “It’s about encouraging the people to just be.” Ms Coates said each session would be different and would be mindful of both

Sessions could include feeding out the hay, grooming, leading Cleopatra and going for a walk. Ms Coates said she got Cleopatra in August after her previous owner had died. “Cleopatra spent quite some time in rehabilitation with Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria, up near Hanging Rock,” she said. “They brought her health and training to a level where she was ready to move on to her new forever home. “Cleopatra had been ready to move on, for five months, before we met.” To find out more about EAL and how you could benefit contact Sarah Coates on 0422 867 725.

Shire to ditch dust suppression trials DUST suppression on gravel roads across the Corangamite Shire continues to be a bugbear for both council and residents.

At the November Ordinary Meeting of Council councillors voted to approve a new Dust Suppression policy which provides council with the guidelines for assessing requests for dust suppression. Shire manager assets planning John Kelly said the shire’s local road network comprised of 1458 kilometres of unsealed roads. “Every year during drier months dust is generated from gravel roads due to the traffic movements and strong wind conditions which results in numerous complaints and requests of suppression of the dust from residents abutting

these gravel roads,” he said in the report to council. “Various products have been trialled by council for dust suppression over many years with limited success. “No dust suppression product was able to provide a long lasting sustainable solution. It is considered that bituminous sealing of a section of gravel road provides a permanent solution to control dust.” Mr Kelly said the policy would no longer provide the reactive dust suppressant treatemnts on its unsealed roads adjacent to residences. “However, it is proposed that council consider sealing sections of the roads in front of properties on a cost recovery basis from the property owners,” he said. In the vicinity of a household a minimum

length of 150 metres of gravel rural road would likely need to be sealed. Mr Kelly said the estimated cost of this treatment would be approximately $10,000 per households. “For requests where it can be demonstrated the majority of traffic on the road is throughtraffic and that there is greater than 50 vehicles per day travelling on the road, the costs of the sealing works would be equally shared between the owner and council,” he said. “Council’s contribution would be drawn from the current budget allocation for dust suppression. “For all other requests on roads that do not meet the above traffic criteria, full recovery costs would be sought from owners.” Councillor Jo Beard said the trials over the

last few years had been “pretty thorough”. “There was a lot of backlash at times; but we’ve obviously tired to do everything we could to appease particularly the residential landowners on those dirt roads,” she said. “I do appreciate the expertise that has gone into bringing this particular policy to the table. “I think it’s going to be interesting to see it rolled out.” Cr Beard said council needed to come up with some sort of solution to the problem. Cr Ruth Gstrein agreed and said it was important to make sure the policy was “fair and equitable”. “We really need to stop throwing good money after bad and get a permanent solution,” she said. “I think this is a good solution.”

Cobden Scouts spokesperson Kelly Wain said a recent working bee at the lake went well. “Scout members, leaders and families all spent time on Sunday (November 26) in the area surrounding Connie the Swan,” she said. “They cleared litter, weeded the garden beds and spread a big pile of mulch around Connie. “The scouts have agreed to take on an ongoing responsibility for keeping Connie and her area looking good.”

Timboon Probus Notes MEMBERS have had a very busy and interesting time this month. A smaller general meeting because of the Melbourne Cup/bowls but the guest speakers made up for it. Alex from Dresden, in the eastern part of Germany, would like to become an Australian citizen. He gave a quick insight into the problems in Germany with accommodation, medical assistance etc. with people from other countries who, because of Germany’s laws, are unable to work. After secondary school he trained for three years in Dairy Technology and has had an interest in Australia for many years Selena from Buenos Aires in Argentina, trained as a journalist and has also lived in Europe for four-and-a-half-years and likes talking in public. They are now milking in a dairy near Timboon. Sponsorship within Australia, especially in the country rather than a large city, is something they would both love. Our usual draw for Melbourne Cup horses was conducted, and the result the next day was a prize for whoever drew the winner of the Cup. Reports included our trip to Cobden for the Probus Friendship Day last month which was enjoyed by all and some good ideas for future guest speakers was given. Then the interesting trip to Derrinallum and Mount Elephant where we were given a very informative presentation of the Mount’s history and members were intrigued with the varied types and colours of the rocks from the Mount. Also Deep Lake, where a local man gave us some interesting information on the Lake, which is 12 feet deep and has its own Yacht Club Dining Out members will be enjoying a meal at the Port Campbell Hotel this month and

Jo Musico, who has entertained us for some in December. The Caravan Club changed their next venue, and have since relaxed for a few years now, again provided the listening/dance days at Narrawong with the river and the sea music that we all enjoy so much with him. As usual, members will be enclosing their for company.

Christmas gift money in a special separate envelope for Food Share in Warrnambool. So another happy, fulfilling year has ended, and we look forward to next year with its fun, fellowship and friendship. Until then, have a happy and blessed Christmas.

Turn unwanted phones into lifeline YOUR unwanted mobile phone could provide a vital lifeline for someone in crisis.

Corangamite Shire Council is seeking donations of unused mobile phones which will be refurbished and distributed through family violence centres and police services. Mayor Kate Makin said registered charity DV Safe Phone collects, erases and repairs phones then provides them to front line family violence and Police services to support victim survivors of domestic violence. “DV Safe Phone works with more than 250 domestic violence and law enforcement agencies, safe houses and hospitals across the country,” she said. “We are launching this campaign as part of the international 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign from November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, until Human Rights Day on December 10. “Family violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children. “In 2018-19, 90 per cent of adults seeking homelessness services due to family and domestic violence were women. “These free phones can give those in a volatile situation a safe and private way to reach out for support.” Corangamite Shire is now an authorised phone drop location where members of the community can drop off unwanted working mobile phones so they can be repurposed and used by someone in need. Cr Nick Cole said domestic violence affects people from all walks of life. He said the phones will be distributed to victim survivors of domestic violence, through various frontline organisations and service providers. “Council believes this is really important work and we are enthusiastic about partnering with DV Safe Phones to provide a location for Phone Drops,” Cr Cole said. “Council is supporting the cause by locating collection boxes at the Civic Centre with our libraries in Camperdown, Cobden, Derrinallum, Terang and Timboon to come online next month. “This is an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of those currently experiencing family and domestic violence.

Helping others: Corangamite Shire deputy mayor Laurie Hickey, mayor Kate Makin, administration support officer Simone Mahoney and Cr Nick Cole support the DV Safe phone authorised phone drop location at the Civic Centre in Camperdown. 2023E

“We encourage anyone with a spare phone, or two, they no longer use, to drop them in the nearest collection box.” DV Safe Phone founder and chief executive officer Ashton Wood said the phones are provided as part of an individual’s ‘safety plan’ offering a lifeline to call for help when it is needed most.

“A mobile phone is something that many of us take for granted, but it can be a potential lifesaver for victim survivors of domestic and family violence, giving them a direct line to emergency responders and support services,” he said.

From paddock to barrel racing UP until less than a fortnight ago, Tara Anderson’s much-loved mare had never seen a barrel – yet alone raced around three of them at a rodeo, and had spent the past six years in the paddock.

Not one to shy away from a challenge or a new experience, 24 year-old Tara – from Princetown – has long been a fan of rodeos and thought she and her mare ‘Ruby Rose’ would “give barrel racing a crack” at last Saturday night’s Warrnambool Rodeo. Despite having less than two weeks to practice (and get her mare used to the format and demands of barrel racing), Tara and Ruby Rose performed remarkably well in front of a huge crowd at the Warrnambool Rodeo last weekend. And while they may not have stood on the podium at the end of the night, they had plenty of reasons to celebrate their achievements. “I was absolutely thrilled with how we went, especially given it was our very first competition,” Tara said. “I’ve been to quite a few rodeos over the years and just thought, why not enter the barrel racing, let’s just wing it – so we did and it was a lot of fun.” Tara and Ruby Rose raced around the three barrels, in a clover leaf pattern, in 19 seconds. Later that night, Tara’s friend Zoe Luppino entered the junior competition on Ruby Rose and ran cleanly in 18 seconds. “So she’s already improving; which is just amazing,” Tara said. And as for their racing future? “Well, who knows….there’s a rodeo in Ballarat early January so we may also enter that.”

Knights off to a good start in Twenty20 THE first two rounds of South West The Knights finished their innings at 7/142 Cricket’s Twenty20 competition and defended the total strongly in the field, the Dragons to 9/76 in just 15.3 proved successful for the Cobden restricting overs. Knights. Best of the bowlers for the Knights were

The Knights had a clean sweep last weekend, defeating both Boorcan and Woorndoo at home. Taking on the Dragons on Saturday morning, the Knights won the toss and elected to bat. Opener Matthew Boyle was quick to get runs on the board, making an effective 37 from 25 balls – which included five boundaries – before being dismissed. Middle order batsman Angus Uwland was also effective with the bat, adding 33 to the board, while team-mate Edmund Walsh contributed 26 and Johno Benallack 12.

Darcy Meade, Matthew Boyle and Sam Melican with two wickets each. Round two saw the Knights continue their momentum in front of a home crowd, again winning the toss and electing to bat against visitors, Woorndoo. Opener Jonty Robertson top scored with an impressive 51 which included six boundaries while team-mate Edmund Walsh was unbeaten on 24 – the Knights finishing the day at 7/138 after 20 overs. In return the Tigers were contained to 8/119 with Darcy Meade, Edmun Walsh and Parker Walsh the best of the Knights’ bowlers.

Slugs close to boil-over BOTTOM side Slugs came within a point of a major upset over second-placed Stallions in the final round of Corangamite volleyball.

The bell sounded just before Slugs had the chance to serve for the match. While a win would have lifted them out of wooden spoon territory, the loss meant they now have to hold the dreaded honour until next season; Autumn 2024. There is one opportunity for Slugs to redeem themselves, when they play Bullbusters in the B grade challenge final. For the first time in the competition’s history, four teams have qualified to play in the A grade finals, leaving Slugs and Ballbusters to fight out the B grade match. While Poachers finished 12 points clear on top, the next teams – Stallions, Bulls and NOBTS – were neck and neck in positions two, three and four. Any of these sides could take out the A grade premiership without surprising anyone. The A grade semi-finals and the final are certain to provide a high standard of volleyball. Results from round nine: Poachers def NOBTS 2-1, Poachers def Ballbusters 4-0, Stallions def Slugs 2-1, Stallions def Bulls 2-1, Bulls def Ballbusters 3-1 and NOBTS def Slugs 3-1. Ladder: Poachers 58, Stallions 46, Bulls 42, NOBTS 38, Ballbusters 12 and Slugs 12.

Simpson Speedway off to flying start

FORMULA 500 driver Tim Rankin continued his hot form this season with a win at last weekend’s season opener for the Heytesbury Stockfeeds Simpson Speedway.

Action returned to the track at Simpson on Saturday night, with Rankin – coming off an earlier win at Premier Speedway in the Jack Wilsher Cup – once again showing speed and class on the track to take the chequered flag. Rankin led the field home in the A Main, closely followed by Australia 1 Dylan Willsher with Dylan Beveridge in third. In the junior formula 500s, talented local Rusty Ponting finished the night a close second to Aston Rodrigues, with Koby Oshannassy finishing third in the entertaining 15-lap final. Fan favourite class, the Super Rods, didn’t disappoint the large crowd on the weekend, once again putting on some great racing throughout the night. Michael Coad took the chequered flag in the final, just ahead of Daniel Grist with Paul Verhoeven close behind in third. The Victorian Wingless Sprints contested round two of the Super Series, with Travis Millar taking the honours in the 30-lap final, closely followed by Mitchell Broome and third-placed Blake Walsh. Action will return to the Simpson track on Wednesday December 27 with the SRA sprint cars, formula 500s and junior formula 500s. All photos courtesy of ‘donnas photos’.
