ANNUAL REPORT

2022/2023

WE WENT TOGETHER

Western Canada Theatre is honoured to be Kamloops’ own nationally acclaimed live professional theatre company.

WELCOME Western Canada Theatre’s 2022/23 Season was a year of recovery, renewal, and realignment. Audiences returned to our theatres in near prepandemic numbers; Ron and Rae Fawcett generously helped us open our newest venue, Kelson Hall; and our staff and community welcomed new Executive Director, Leslie Biles. As we come out of the emergency phase of the pandemic, we are reminded of the need to feel a sense of togetherness—and the vital role that WCT plays in bringing our community together. The opportunity to laugh and cry together in the theatre creates a kinship and bond with those with whom we share these profound experiences. Theatre offers us insight into different aspects of humanity and history, while promoting emotional intelligence, empathy for others, and deep understanding of different perspectives from around the world. In our move to the beautiful Kelson Hall we transformed the working and learning environment for artists, theatre students, and staff. Our next step is welcoming audiences to the new Lori Marchand Theatre in the years to come. Kelson Hall is Phase One of the proposed Kamloops Centre for the Arts, and we’re honoured to continue to work with Ron Fawcett and the City of Kamloops to bring that long-awaited—and much needed— project to our city. We extend our immense gratitude to all our subscribers, patrons, sponsors, donors, government funders, volunteers, and community members who have supported WCT for 48 years. Every member of our community is essential to our ability to continue offering high-quality, professional live theatre for audiences here in Kamloops and across the BC Interior. Special thanks to the WCT staff, whose ingenuity, tenacity, and dedication makes all of this possible, and who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment and resiliency since 2020. We’ve all been through a lot over the past few years. WCT is proud to contribute to the healing of our community, as well as to important community dialogue in promoting compassion and understanding. We are humbled and galvanized to be stewards of three beloved theatre venues, while providing transformative theatre experiences on our stages and in our classrooms. We love what we do, and we look forward to building towards our 50th Anniversary season in two years.

I was absolutely delighted to join the team here at Western Canada Theatre at the end of 2022. I arrived here in Kamloops and in my first week attended WCT’s Annual General Meeting, opening night of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, and, most excitingly, the official handover of Kelson Hall from Ron and Rae Fawcett to the City of Kamloops! It was a whirlwind introduction to WCT and the wonderfully supportive community here in Kamloops. I think we can all agree that the pandemic made us realize how important community is to our wellbeing. The loneliness, the isolation, and the inability to gather, have made us even more grateful to be able to come back together. The power of being in the theatre, sharing the experience not just with our loved ones, but with our community, is a step toward recovery and rebuilding and we are so very proud to be a part of that journey. Here at WCT, we are fortunate to be part of a community of exceptional supporters: from our board of directors to our stalwart subscribers and amazing audiences, from our donors and sponsors to the dedicated assistance of all levels of government, especially the City of Kamloops, who are partners in all our venues and provide incredible support in so many ways. The generosity of Ron and Rae Fawcett in creating Kelson Hall Centre for Arts and Education is a true gift to the citizens of Kamloops and will reach into the heart of the community for generations. We can’t say enough about the commitment and dedication of the team at WCT. We are extremely grateful to have such passionate, talented, and caring staff and volunteers. Thank you all for everything that you do and how you go above and beyond to create magic. Your enthusiasm for bringing productions to life, helping our rental clients put on their best shows in our theatres, and looking after the care and comfort of our audiences is truly appreciated and essential to WCT’s success. As we continue our path of recovery to a new normal, we are excited to walk with you, our supporters and community. We can’t wait to welcome you to our theatres for years to come.

We recognize the importance of regaining trust and confidence, and we are dedicated to providing enriching experiences that bring people back to our stages, celebrating the joy of live performances once again. A significant milestone in our journey has been the generous gift of Kelson Hall by Ron and Rae Fawcett. This act of philanthropy is a testament to their belief in the power of the arts and its positive impact on our community. Kelson Hall will undoubtedly enhance our ability to expand our creative horizons and engage with our audiences on a broader scale, allowing us to further enrich the cultural fabric of Western Canada. We extend our deepest gratitude to our community for their steadfast support and unwavering belief in our mission. Your continued patronage, enthusiasm, and generous contributions have allowed us to flourish and dream big. Together, we are building a brighter future for live theatre in Western Canada. Looking ahead, we are excited about the vibrant and diverse season that lies before us. The lineup of captivating performances, thought-provoking plays, and engaging events promises to ignite the imagination and stir the hearts of our audience. We invite you all to join us in this thrilling journey, as we collectively embrace the boundless possibilities of live theatre.

We believe in the transformative power of theatre, in entertaining, educating, and edifying a wide-ranging, diverse audience.

“Each year the productions seem to get better and better.” “I am so thankful to have WCT in Kamloops.” “Life would not be the same without WCT. After 38 years of attending your amazing performances, I can say that nothing exceeds this entertainment in my mind.”

2022/23 SEASON 7 productions 4 special events 3 stages 150+ artists 27,000 patrons After two years of pandemic recovery, the 2022/23 Season was a milestone and turning point for WCT. With seven unforgettable productions full of groove and meaning, our audiences returned in postpandemic record numbers, cheered, laughed, and cried side by side in the theatre, and came together as a community. The Sagebrush Series featured a ghostly world premiere, a beloved holiday classic filled with invigorated nostalgia, the return of a WCT fan-favourite, a new Canadian curling comedy just in time for the Scotties, and a smash-hit original WCT production of one of the most popular rock n’ roll musicals of all time. The Pavilion Series showcased new perspectives on complex topics with humour and grace—including a global love story set against the COVID-19 pandemic and Russian invasion of Ukraine, and an uplifting one-person play chronicling life’s small joys as a way to cope with depression.

SLEIGHT OF MIND

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A LIVE RADIO PLAY

“It was truly wonderful—best of the season! I laughed, I cried, I laugh-cried.”

FIRST MÉTIS MAN OF ODESA

EVERY BRILLIANT THING

WCT was proud to partner with Punctuate! Theatre to develop the world premiere of this daring new play, which opened in Kamloops and embarked on an ongoing national tour. Based on actual events, this love story from award-winning theatre artists and real-life married couple offered a personal and intimate perspective on the war in Ukraine and newlywed life in Canada.

An unexpectedly funny, warm, and insightful dramedy about depression featuring a charming and emotional performance from Vancouver theatre actor Dawn Petten. This one-women play invited audience members to participate directly in the story, by reading brilliant things and playing roles on stage.

SPECIAL EVENTS

A BROAD’S WAY FESTIVAL

Celebrating International Women’s Day March 07 to 12, 2023 | Kelson Hall This season, WCT held the 4th annual International Women’s Day festivities with A Broad’s Way Festival. This much-loved local event featured an exuberant array of talent, passion, community, and power—all from local women! The week of female inspired festivities kicked off with Broaden Your Horizons, a gathering and expo hosted at Kelson Hall, showcasing local female creatives and entrepreneurs. A welcome from Rae Fawcett, a keynote address from innovative community health centre STEPS (Supporting Team Excellence with Patients Society), and breakout rooms ranging from Bollywood dancing to macramé, made this a night to remember. The festival also included WCT’s annual A Broad’s Way Cabaret, welcoming over 40 local artists in our region to the Lori Marchand Theatre stage. The week-long celebration concluded with Writing Herstory, a playwriting competition where two local female playwrights were chosen amongst 10 entries to be mentored by local professionals and supported by local actors. This community event, involving over 60 diverse artists, 12 local entrepreneurs, as well as an incredible committee of eight staff members was a highlight for women in our community. HALLOWEEN DANCE PARTY

Saturday, October 29, 2022 | Pavilion Theatre This season saw the return of WCT’s family-focused Halloween Dance Party! After a two-year hiatus, the 9th annual celebration for little ghouls and goblins was a great success with over 140 people dancing their hearts out at the Pavilion Theatre. This free event for families was made possible thanks to support from Stage One Teen volunteers. 100% of event donations were donated to the Kamloops Food Bank.

We offer theatre as a tool for community and family bonding, bringing family and friends closer together.

EDUCATION This season, The Hub for Creative Learning at WCT had many educational endeavors return in full force, along with growth in our theatre classes, work within the community, as well as an exciting move to our new home in the brand-new facility at Kelson Hall. The Education team grew this year when we welcomed Emily Brown as WCT’s Education and Community Engagement Intern. Having a second full time employee dedicated to the Education department allowed WCT to do an extended amount of outreach, particularly with expanding community engagement around Relaxed Performances. Throughout the 2022/23 Season, we continued our dedication to accessibility by offering more Relaxed Performances. Four WCT productions (Boom X, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, Hurry Hard, First Métis Man of Odesa) were adapted for one matinee performance to allow all patrons, especially those who might benefit from a more relaxed theatre environment, an opportunity to comfortably see our shows. Without compromising artistic integrity, we provided a highly inclusive environment that could help patrons with children, mobility concerns, and sensory sensitivities experience a welcoming and safe place to enjoy theatre. Many audience enrichment activities also resumed this season, such as pizza nights, actor talkbacks, venue tours, study guides, play guides, and tea matinees (having the highest attendance to date!). Community engagement was another great success as we stewarded workshops, tours, and connections created with SD73, Kamloops Adult Learners Society, Heartwood Homeschooling Group, South Kamloops Secondary Drama Department, Unplug and Play, Kamloops Museum and Archives, and many more. Theatre Classes returned to full swing with great registration all year and the highest Spring Break attendance on record. Stage One Theatre School offered Introductory Acting, Musical Theatre, Teen Workshop Week, and Performance Classes throughout the year for students ages 4 to 18. Next Stage Theatre Classes for adults consisted of Intro Acting 1 and Play Reading in both the Fall and Spring. Thanks to the generous support of Ron and Rae Fawcett, WCT’s Education department was able to move to a new home at Kelson Hall in January 2023. Having dedicated space for Stage One and Next Stage classes, as well as all Education initiatives, means we can consistently provide a creative and safe space for all our students and instructors, while growing the reach of our classes and programs. We are incredibly thankful for this opportunity and can’t wait for the potential this new space brings. We look forward to creating, learning, and growing in our new home for years to come.

We are proud to have roots in youth theatre, and to continue the tradition and foundation of providing arts education and entertainment to youth and adults through our educational programs and family programming.

VENUES & COMMUNITY WCT is extremely proud to steward Kamloops’ best performing arts venues on behalf of the City and community. The Sagebrush Theatre, Pavilion Theatre, and the city’s newest venue Kelson Hall are more than just buildings, they are essential gathering places for our community to come together, make new connections, experience new perspectives, and share in making unforgettable memories with friends and family. These beloved theatres belong to all of us here in Kamloops. We are delighted to not only present WCT’s productions on these stages but also facilitate the care and maintenance of each venue to ensure there is space for all types of performances to be shared with local audiences. From the renowned and stirring Kamloops Symphony Orchestra performances, to school assemblies and concerts, to the local favourite community pantomime during the holidays, to youth dance showcases in the spring, to comedy shows and tribute bands, each and every one of our venue partners makes this city a better place to live. Thank you to all the organizations and individuals who shared the magic of live performance on these stages this season. We are honoured to share the stage with you all. The Kamloops Live! Box Office (KL!BO) also continued to grow its support for community events—with just under 62,000 tickets sold to 234 events in Kamloops and area this season. The KL!BO team provided ticketing services not just at the Sagebrush Theatre, Pavilion Theatre, and Kelson Hall but also for events around the city, including the Paramount Theatre, BrewLoops, Kamloops Wine Festival, and more.

We see theatre as a place of gathering for our community, where our city can commiserate, share joy, heal, and come together. Kelson Hall Centre for Arts & Education Above: Hockey Hall of Fame at Kelson Hall (May 25 to June 4, 2023)

In November 2022, local philanthropists Ron and Rae Fawcett, made a multimillion-dollar donation to arts and culture in Kamloops in the form of the newly renovated arts facility Kelson Hall. Donated to the City of Kamloops, Kelson Hall has become the new home for Western Canada Theatre and Kamloops Symphony Orchestra (KSO). The 20,000 square foot building in downtown Kamloops includes the Lori Marchand Theatre (a 134-seat theatre and rehearsal space), Bruce Dunn Hall rehearsal space, plus two dedicated classroom spaces for Stage One Theatre School, nine music classrooms for KSO School of Music, as well as new offices for both WCT and KSO. In addition to expanding operations for WCT and KSO, Kelson Hall will also become an arts hub for community performances and events, where we look forward to welcoming new audiences in the years to come. With the addition of dedicated rehearsal space for artists, classrooms allocated specifically for theatre classes, additional office space for staff, and new performance and event venue options, Kelson Hall has transformed the way we work since the day we moved in early in 2023. Our deepest gratitude goes out to Ron and Rae Fawcett for this generous gift to the Kamloops arts community.

“Rae and I are delighted to be able to provide this building. We have been dedicated to furthering the performing arts in Kamloops for many years. This is only the first step to make sure our community groups will thrive and create a need and a demand for the next step, which will be performing stages so our community can attend and enjoy their performances.” – Ron Fawcett

FUND DEVELOPMENT

Western Canada Theatre cannot maintain our status as Canada’s 10th largest regional theatre company without the support of hundreds of generous supporters. To produce the high-quality, professional work WCT is known for, we rely on grants and gifts from individuals, foundations, corporations, and all levels of government. These contributions support our work in multiple ways, including helping us bring world-class theatre to our stages, creating mentorship opportunities for emerging artists, and increasing the range of theatre education programs for youth and adults in our community. A key component of our work is creating connections with our community. This season we continued our longstanding relationship with the popular beer and music festival, BrewLoops, by helping plan the September 2022 event. WCT is proud to be one of BrewLoops’ charitable beneficiaries and has greatly benefited from its financial support, which included a generous $20,000 donation towards WCT’s Relaxed Performances initiative this season. Our community extends beyond arts and culture. In 2019, we were thrilled to have been selected as Boogie the Bridge’s local charity of choice. We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support we received from the Boogie team during the challenging pandemic year and beyond. The funds raised during our three-year partnership with the annual run/ walk community event went towards youth theatre education programs. To reach new audiences, we partnered with Norm Daley to launch an inaugural Scotch Tasting event at Kelson Hall in May 2023 (in conjunction with the 2023 Memorial Cup tournament) and with Kamloops Wine Festival for their reimagined event at the Colombo Lodge in June 2023. The mandate of both events was to be an educational and entertaining experience for the public and to raise funds for WCT. We would like to thank them both for their support.

FINANCIALS Since reopening our doors after the pandemic, WCT has focused on reinvesting in our community and artists. While the COVID-19 pandemic was devastating to our industry, both financially and professionally, when we returned to live performance in Fall 2021 we were committed to serving our audience and theatre artists across the country. After the isolation of the pandemic, providing places for the community to gather was essential. Over the past two seasons, we have invested a portion of our accumulated surplus to ensure we could come back in full force with full-scale productions to provide that gathering place. While we were enthusiastically ready to return to live theatre, we found it took our audiences a little more time to feel comfortable returning to in-person gatherings. Encouragingly, we saw this trend improving significantly over the 22/23 Season, with the Spring 2023 production of Grease breaking ticket sales records and bringing back full houses with over 11,000 patrons attending the hit musical. During our post-pandemic road to recovery, we’ve had to contend with numerous financial challenges, ranging from the added costs of new understudy rehearsals, to increased costs of materials and accommodations, and challenges in supply chain and labour shortages. While many changes in recent years have brought improvements to our work, such as the use of more understudies which allowed for every single Grease performance to go on despite cast illnesses, these costs have increased production budgets. While WCT ends this season with a deficit, we have retained a modest accumulated surplus to keep us stable. We are proud of the investments we have made in bringing our community and artists back together—and we now see those investments paying off with greater ticket sales and subscriptions projected moving forward.

VOLUNTEERS 9,000+

the number of hours donated by WCT volunteers this season! Our volunteers are essential to Western Canada Theatre’s success. They are the ticket takers and ushers for every performance and all events at the Sagebrush Theatre, Pavilion Theatre, and Kelson Hall. They help us build costumes and sets, sell drinks and snacks in the concession, send out promotional mailings, make phone calls to thank donors, and a myriad of other tasks we couldn’t do without them!
