ANNUAL REPORT 2019/2020

WELCOME Our 2019-20 Season can only be described as eventful. As we began the season, in the summer heat of 2019, the Sagebrush Theatre was closed for urgent structural roof repairs that had yet to begin in earnest and WCT was in a flurry of activity; still, the future looked sunny. Fast forward a year, and our 44th season ended much as it began, in a state of uncertainty, this time caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with our productions cut short, our staff greatly reduced, and our facilities shuttered.

Nevertheless, Western Canada Theatre still had many causes for celebration in the 2019-20 season, for which we are proud and thankful.

The season’s productions were audience, critical and box office successes, demonstrating how enthusiastically our audiences embrace quality Canadian and Indigenous stories, such as The Drowning Girls, The New Canadian Curling Club, Café Daughter, the world premiere of Serving Elizabeth, and the tour of GLORY. The disappointment was palatable when the pandemic suspended the opening of the most anticipated show of the season: Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen and curtailed the run of Café Daughter right after Opening Night.

Our audiences were also delighted with the tom-foolery of Dracula: The Bloody Truth and the box-office-record-setting enchantment of The Sound of Music.

We again valued the strength of the Kamloops community and its collaborative spirit this season. We were highly involved in the planning for the proposed Kamloops Centre for the Arts, which generated community enthusiasm over the construction of much-needed performance and educational space in our city, thanks to the incredible generosity and drive of Ron Fawcett. Our collaborations continued on our major events, such as the Mayor’s Gala for the Arts—with the Kamloops Symphony and the Kamloops Art Gallery—and BrewLoops—with Rotary Kamloops. The community spirit also rang true when trouble befell us, including when the Sagebrush roof required major structural repairs, undertaken by School District #73 and the City of Kamloops, and with the closures caused by COVID-19.

Despite the cancellation of the final four productions in our 2019-20 season, and the resulting lost revenue, WCT was able to post a modest surplus on the year, helping to reduce our accumulated deficit and ensure our long-term sustainability. Though this surplus was largely made possible thanks to resiliency funding, community support, and wage subsidy, it is important to note that even prior to the pandemic

the organization was faring well financially. The year ended strongly, with thanks to our entire team for keeping a keen eye on finances and for finding inventive and costeffective ways to create theatre in this community.

We thank our staff, volunteers and board members for their dedication to WCT at this time. Starting the year with a major national tour and ending during a pandemic, our team acted with tireless commitment, ingenuity, flexibility, and a relentless focus on resiliency and long-term sustainability, always while keeping in step with Dr. Bonnie Henry’s mantra, ‘be calm, be kind, be safe’.

Our thanks also go to our loyal community—our patrons, donors, supporters, sponsors and public funders—for your unwavering commitment to WCT in the face of the pandemic. We truly would not be here if it was not for your dedication to WCT. Through an uncertain year, we have been humbled by your generosity and belief in the arts in our city. THANK YOU. And we are here to stay. For two years in a row, our company has been faced with unexpected disruptions that could have caused an existential crisis. And for the second year in a row, our company survived thanks to organizational resiliency and the spark of Kamloops’ generosity. Despite the impacts of COVID-19 on our operations, our 2020-21 Season is forging ahead, albeit in new and exciting ways. The decision to suspend our subscription package season was a difficult one, but one that allowed us to lean in towards more COVID-appropriate programming, community collaborations, and reaching new audiences through virtual and online platforms.

We are your professional community theatre, and we are proud to be able to serve our entire region with productions and programs that attract people from all walks of life and of all ages. That we can continue to offer transformative experiences for our region and audiences across Canada is a tribute to the ingenuity, passion, and vision of our entire community. Though the effects of COVID-19 are sure to be long-lived, it is with great optimism that we look to the future.

Our base is strong. We look forward to gathering together in celebration in the near future.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD Western Canada Theatre’s 44th season offered a wonderful mix of unique plays, a great family show for the holidays, and was in rehearsal to produce the great music of Leonard Cohen in Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen. And then WCT, like the community, faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The staff of WCT and the performers of Chelsea Hotel immediately adapted and made the most of a tough situation with a live performance from their balconies on the shore of the South Thompson River!

The Board, working with our amazing Senior Management and the great team they have, moved, adjusted, re-adjusted, and found an opening in the tunnel to survive the first part of this experience. It was a season of logistical, staffing, performance, and stakeholder engagement trials that challenged us to prepare for coming out the other side. While we do not know what the new normal will be for all of us, we know the community, the WCT team and our stakeholders are behind us!

The 2019/20 Season, while not completed, reflected the Board’s continuous commitment to James MacDonald’s artistic vision for WCT. We also appreciated, as part of his role as Artistic Director, James’ direction of The Drowning Girls, The Sound of Music and GLORY. Evan Klassen, as Managing

Director, continues to show his invaluable commitment to ensure the company operates professionally.

The Board looks forward to envisioning an updated strategic plan for WCT, a process that was interrupted by COVID-19; we have reconfirmed our commitment to complete the work in 2021.

We welcomed new members to the Board this past season and look forward to more engagement with new Board Members who reflect the cultural diversity of our city. Our governance committee continues to develop policy around risk management, board diversity, fund development and financial compliance to ensure the safety of our company and client data and to ensure the sustainability of the organization.

We’re again indebted to our amazing partners, sponsors, employees, donors and volunteers for their continued support of our vision for WCT and of our drive to provide opportuni­ties for the youth of Kamloops. Without this support, we could not have come out of the start of the pandemic as strong as we have. We are now able to start moving forward to prepare for the future.

PRODUCTIONS We continued to embrace our company’s mandate to promote and develop Canadian and Indigenous stories with The Drowning Girls, The New Canadian Curling Club, and the abbreviated presentation of Café Daughter. Our world premiere of Canadian playwright Marcia Johnson’s Serving Elizabeth, a comedy-drama about colonialism and popular media, led to that play’s publication and several further planned productions. Unfortunately, the pandemic curtailed two more Canadian works: Chelsea Hotel: The Songs of Leonard Cohen and The Boy in the Moon.

With the advent of the Pandemic, WCT pivoted our offerings to virtual platforms. This started with the highly-successful livestream concert of Leonard Cohen songs performed by the Chelsea Hotel cast from the balconies of the Riverland Inn and Suites and continued through to our Stage One at-home series of educational videos, our “Until We Meet Again” promotion series of the best of world digital theatre, and on-line Artist Talks.

by Tracey Power – a tour that proved our resourcefulness, acumen at touring, and ability to tell a powerful, true-life Canadian story to a national audience. Through 2019, over 50,000 people enjoyed the production in 11 venues across B.C. and Canada.

The Sound of Music ‘wow’-ed capacity audiences and set new box office records. It also furthered our goal of offering opportunities for young people to experience live theatre, with six young Kamloops-area performers in the cast and over 4,000 students in the audience.

Plays such as Serving Elizabeth and Café Daughter not only tell great stories of significant national interest and importance to our audiences, but through their inclusivity and accessibility, they invite our audiences to share new ideas and look afresh at old ones as part of community conversations. EDUCATION & OUTREACH WCT introduces and provides opportunities for young people to embrace and enjoy live theatre. From our Stage One Theatre School to our student matinee program, to opportunities for young people to participate in live theatre through performance, mentorship, or outreach activities, we continue to find new ways to engage and activate the youth in our community. Education is at the heart of what we do.

Stage One continued to operate at capacity through the 2019-20 season, with programs for young people aged 4 to 18. Classes continued after the advent of COVID-19, with compliance to provincial health regulations. Prior to March 2020, Stage One students participated in various WCT events, including their own performance of Here We Sit and outside events, such as the Children’s Arts Festival. Several Stage One students and alumni were also featured as part of the Young Company in our hit musical The Sound of Music, playing the Von Trapp children and the resident nuns of Nonnberg Abbey.

We seek to be responsive to community needs. When the Parkcrest Elementary School burned down in September 2019, we were pleased to be able to offer the pupils a daytime acting class, with the cooperation of the Kamloops Rugby Club’s offer of free classroom space, for the week the school district suspended classes.

Based on the positive response of our trial adult theatre school classes in January 2019, we introduced our first full season of classes. The classes proved so popular, additional sections were added. These classes give the public intriguing new ways of expanding their appreciation of theatre as audience members, as well as of the arts in general.

One again, the student matinees for our holiday musical sold out, with over 3,500 students attending the run of The Sound of Music with their classmates.

Other productions that provided creative, educational experiences for students through the year included Serving Elizabeth (learning about history, colonialism, and popular culture), The New Canadian Curling Club (immigration, racism, xenophobia), and PLAY GUIDE Dracula: The Bloody Truth (a unique approach to a literary classic).

In our on-going quest to reach out to new audiences and extend the experience for established theatre goers, we moved the evening of our Students’ Club/Pizza Night and post-show talkbacks, which resulted in more participants In addition to our popular in-school workshops, we

partnered with Marion Shilling Elementary school to create a much loved Christmas Concert for their school and community.

The study guides we prepare for teachers ahead of each student matinee contain a wealth of background information, including interviews, biographies, and histories related to the plays. To better offer this preview material that could enrich each audience member’s experience, the guides have evolved to be “Play Guides” and shared more widely through our subscriber enews and social media platforms.

An initiative that we were most looking forward to was offering a “relaxed performance” for The Boy in the Moon, which was then postponed due to COVID-19. These performances are designed for young people on the autism spectrum and are an excellent way to improve accessibility. We are also exploring other accessibility options, such as performances that feature ASL interpretation and “Vocal-eye” for blind or low-vision patrons.

In September, we introduced our highly successful Wednesday Tea Matinees, an opportunity for audiences to gather before seeing our daytime performances, along with young people attending through the student matinees. The lobby overflowed with tea, treats and chatter.

Adapting to COVID-19 We successfully pivoted to online activities before starting to gradually reintroduce safely physically distanced classes in the summer of 2020. These activities included the highly appreciated on-line At Home with Stage One series, offering theatre games and activities for young people to continue to embrace the magic and vitality of theatre, and operating our summer day camps at capacity, with physical distancing in place. As well, our spring Adult Acting Classes moved online until completion.

We know that nothing can replace the experience of being in a room together, and we can’t wait to see you all in our classrooms again soon.

OUR VENUES & BOX OFFICE We entered the 2019-20 season in July awaiting repairs to the Sagebrush Theatre’s truss system. Our Venue Services team, clients, and patrons continued to be flexible and innovative, as we operated outside of our venues and, initially, our comfort zones. With new lessons and technology for the Kamloops Live! Box Office (KL!BO), our House Manager and incredible team of volunteers—175 in the 2019-20 season—seamlessly adapted to greeting patrons at the Oasis Church, Coast Hotel, and outdoor events, such as the community favourite BrewLoops. Meanwhile, School District #73 and the City of Kamloops undertook major structural repairs to the Sagebrush Theatre.

While we are grateful for the knowledge, growth, and experience gained in that time, the Kamloops community breathed a sigh of relief in October, when the Sagebrush Theatre reopened after eight months to the public, with WCT’s Dracula: The Bloody Truth. It was a joy to fill our seats and stage with theatre once more! The additions of new rigging equipment, handrails, accessible seating, carpet, and house lighting were welcomed as heralding a new era in accessibility and functionality for the Sagebrush Theatre.

Over the next six months, the KL!BO, Sagebrush Theatre and Pavilion Theatre brought 143 theatre, comedy, dance, and music events to over 25,000 patrons, eager to be make up for the time we sat empty!

After so much hard work to get our facility open again, we were forced to close our doors once more in March. We shared with our audiences and clients the heartbreak that came with the COVID-19 pandemic and associated closures, restrictions around gatherings, and loss of art. Through the last part of the 2019-20 season, we slowly and carefully planned for the resumption of some events, while recognizing it would be a long while before we could return to operations as they were.

Despite the roller coaster of a ride the last two years have been, we have endured, even thrived, through the support and can-do spirit of our KL!BO attendants, House Staff, and incredible core of loyal volunteers. We are so lucky to have these teams of people that have been through the chaos and stress of two venue closures, yet continue to support us and are committed to making theatre happen again in Kamloops.

MISSED BY OUR COMMUNITY TOM KERR WCT was saddened at the news of the passing of our founding artistic director, Tom Kerr, at the age of 90 In March 2020. As a teacher, director, and founder of what was then Western Canada Youth Theatre, Tom made an indelible impression on our city and on the theatre community across Canada. He leaves a lasting legacy not only within our company, but in the thousands of students and performers who worked with him, a legacy that lives on in professional and community theatres across the country to this day.

In late December 2019, we suffered the sudden loss of long-time volunteer, staff, and WCT advocate Phyllis Mader. Phyllis had worked as a Guest Services Director in the frontof-house at the Sagebrush in addition to her role as a WCT volunteer. She would help with our annual mailouts, Christmas at the Pavilion, our annual general meetings, and the Mayor’s Gala, where this past year she was a finalist for the Enduring Supporter award to acknowledge her contributions to the arts communities in Kamloops. Her presence is sorely missed.

FUND DEVELOPMENT In the 2019-20 Season, we saw the growth of key established events and an outpouring of support from our patrons, donors and corporate partners during this unique time.

Through our tenth and final year of collaboration with Volkswagen of Kamloops on the VW Turtle River Race, we thoroughly enjoyed engaging with the community at events throughout the summer. Thank you to Volkswagen of Kamloops owner Terry Lowe for his prodigious support of this event over the years.

BrewLoops, the collaborative craft beer event between WCT, the Rotary Club of Kamloops, Tourism Kamloops, and the City of Kamloops, had its most successful year, drawing an attendance of over 3,000 to MacArthur Island Park over the last weekend in September 2019. In addition to the funds raised, it provided platforms to promote WCT’s productions to new audiences at the weekly BrewLoops in the Park, in collaboration with the ever popular Music in the Park series.

In January, the wildly successful 14th Mayor’s Gala for the Arts, presented in partnership with the Kamloops Art Gallery, the Kamloops Symphony, and the City of Kamloops, welcomed over 300 guests to a festive

The event was hosted by Alicia Ashcroft, who also led an energetic auction. Thank you to our generous artists, sponsors, guests, and volunteers for making this such a spectacular event.

Throughout the season, our donors and supporters were treated to “behind the scenes” tours, pre-show refreshments, and post-show talks with the casts, directors and designers who create our imaginative productions.

Following the cancellation of the remainder of our season due to COVID-19, our staff contacted all ticket-holding patrons to ask them if they would consider donating their tickets back to the theatre in return for a charitable tax receipt. The community response was heartwarming. More than 95% of our patrons either donated their ticket value back to the theatre or exchanged it for credits to future on-stage productions. We would like to acknowledge the incredible generosity of our patrons and subscribers who contributed back to us during these challenging times.

We would also like to give a special thank you to our Government and Foundation grantors for their tremendous support and sustaining contributions. Because of you, WCT will continue to produce extraordinary and unique shows that bring our community together.
