Western State College Foundation Report of Appreciation, 2010-11

Page 1

We dedicate this publication in memory of Louis L. Borick, friend and benefactor of Western State College Foundation. Our sadness is tempered by profound gratitude. Louis will be dearly missed for his generosity and leadership, which will continue to bless the lives of many generations of Western students and faculty.

Louis Lawrence Borick 1923 - 2011

Founder and long time President and Chairman of the Board of Superior Industries International, Inc. passed away Monday, November 28, 2011. He was 87. Louis, his son Steven (’75) and their family made the largest gift commitment in Western’s history, a $3+ million challenge to build the Borick Business Building, a $7 million, 25,000 sq. ft. building on Western’s campus, home to the Department of Business, Accounting and Economics. Louis also created the Borick Business Scholarship Endowment on behalf of Steve. Steve later established the Steven Borick Business and Accounting Scholarship, which provides scholarships to outstanding minority students. Always an entrepreneur at heart, Louis built Superior Industries, headquartered in Van Nuys, California from a small automotive accessories distributor in 1957 to a major, highly respected aluminum road wheel supplier servicing automotive manufacturers worldwide. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota on November 30, 1923 to Sophie and Samuel Borick, Louis was a veteran of World War II where he served as an Air Force pilot and retired with the rank of Major. He married Nita Byers in March of 1948 and together raised three children. He is survived by his loving daughter, Linda Borick-Davidson (William P. Davidson, Jr.) of Orinda, CA, and his sons, Steven J. Borick who succeeded his father as CEO, Chairman and President of Superior Industries, and Robert A. Borick, as well as his grandchildren, Lauren and Blake Davidson, and his brother William A. Borick, and his sister Eve Ferkel. He was preceded in death by his sister, Anne Herstein. Louis was a natural leader who valued loyalty, integrity and teamwork in his approach to business. He was always cool under pressure and focused on adding value to customers, employees and shareholders. Louis lived an exciting and active life, full of family, lifelong friends and many great experiences. He loved fishing, flying airplanes, the races, a good movie, playing golf or cards on Saturday afternoons at Wilshire Country Club, and the love of his family. Louis had a gift for developing friendships that lasted throughout his life. He was a true original, providing opportunities to many, blazing his own path and receiving respect, loyalties and much admiration in return. Services were held at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills, California on December 2, 2011. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. – From the Los Angeles Times

Dear Western Alumni and Friends, As we celebrate Western’s 100 years, I am completing my 10th year as the President of Western, and 21st year at the College. Please know that I am still grateful, proud, and humbled to serve as the President of this College. Philanthropy will play a major role in Western’s future as it will for the future of most of public higher education. The 19th and 20th century model with sufficient public funding to make higher education accessible to students is, like many things in history, behind us. This means that Western and our sister public higher education schools must adapt to a new world with new realities. Philanthropy will be front and center in this new world. Public higher education now operates in a new reality of heightened expectations and demands from our constituents. Ironically, these heightened expectations come with diminishing funding for the past several years, and that situation will not change anytime soon. So, despite diminished funding support, there are increased public expectations for access, accountability, and affordability. The Age of Accountability coupled with lower public funding support is the new normal. To be clear, the Age of Accountability means that our public expects us all to educate a more diverse and broad student population than ever before; and to assure that these students succeed irrespective of college preparedness when they begin. Among the many challenges the College faces, it is clear that we must shape Western in the coming years to clearly demonstrate how we differ from our competitors and bring value to the region and the State. Our programs must be relevant; they must be rigorous; and learning outcomes must be clearly established and assessed. The Western faculty understand this and stand ready to deliver. It is critical that we forge onward with the kind of vision and imagination demonstrated by those who founded the Gunnison Normal School in 1911, evolved it into Western State College of Colorado in 1923, and set the College on a course that has brought us to this 100 year anniversary. We must continue the legacy of commitment, vision, and resilience that has brought us to this point and launch Western into a robust, relevant, and successful second century of excellence in Colorado higher education. I want to thank each of you for all that you have done for Western, and all that you continue to do. We are surrounded by a cheering section of 100 years of faculty, students, alumni, community members and donors. They encourage, empower, and challenge us to carry the torch of Western forward to future generations. You carry it with me. The early years of Gunnison Normal School and then Western State College of Colorado were difficult and challenging. So too are times challenging as we face our second hundred years. Much like those before us, we will continue to make history together. Thank you for believing in Western. Sincerely, Jay Helman President

Happy 100th Birthday WSC! As I consider our heritage and those who labored, I am truly humbled by their ability and kindness. I know I speak for all of us now when I say “Thank You.” So, what’s on the horizon in addition to our sprawling state-of-the-art campus, newly renovated and restored Taylor Hall, Student Apartments and our high-altitude Field House/ Indoor Student Recreation Center? Well, if that’s not enough, as many of you may know WSC is now able to consider a name change that can include the “University” label. While the past looks impressive, the horizon, with your support, is brilliant. Together with our very passionate, charismatic, and accomplished President Jay Helman, the entire Administrative team, and Foundation Board, it is now time to direct all of our energy and focus on enrollment. As President of the WSC Foundation, my focus parallels that of Jay’s to exponentially increase enrollment, and in doing so, I remain at your service and available to you all. Look at us now!

My Dear Friends, Thank you. As we celebrate so much for which to be thankful, there is an empty place at our table. Louis Borick is not with us anymore. We have dedicated this publication to his memory, which will linger in our hearts always with affection and gratitude. Louis, thank you for your beautiful lesson – that philanthropy, the demonstrated love of people, is the way to change the world. We remember. A few thoughts on the present and the future… Vision soars and carries our hopes and efforts with it. Blessings abound. Thanksgiving celebrated 24/7/365. Giving as common as need. Generosity matching opportunity. An infectious quest to overwhelm obstacles. Hearts united on behalf of others whom they may never meet, but on whose futures we all depend. Delight in the assurance of purpose and doing good. Victories big and small, all teaching us that winning for others is sweeter by far. Peace-filled gratitude. Western thriving. In an effort to conserve; direct more resources to our core mission of providing life-transforming, relationship-based education; and our commitment to be transparent, we have posted our full annual audit on our website rather than in this publication. You may find it at http://www.western.edu/foundation. Every blessing to you and yours. Thank you! Warm regards,

Respectfully,

David R. McEntire President, Western State College Foundation Board of Directors

Thomas F. Burggraf, Jr. VP for Institutional Advancement, WSC Executive Director, WSC Foundation

This past year, Western commemorated its Centennial! We

celebrated 100 years of history, tradition, legacy – and 100 years of Western students achieving excellence in higher education. Making history at Western has never been easy, but in the end, consistently magnificent. In 1891, Representatives from Gunnison first introduced the idea of a college charter. It took four more years of tireless vision casting to get the support for the first legislative bill to be introduced in 1895. Six years later, House Bill 27 “The Gunnison Normal School Bill” finally passed in 1901! Ten years of vision. Ten years of investment. And Western was born under the name “Gunnison Normal School.” The word “Normal” was used to describe teacher education, yet nothing about Western’s history up to today is normal, as in ordinary. In 1911, 80 students registered for the normal elementary program (high school), and 24 enrolled in advance course (college work). Notice that it took 16 years from the time that the charter was introduced until the College finally opened. Persistent endurance was woven into the fabric of Western’s people from the beginning. The College had achieved much, but it was not done yet. The vision for what this extraordinary College could become drew its people ever forward. Within just 12 years of its opening, the Gunnison Normal School became the first public liberal arts college west of the Mississippi, renamed Western State College of Colorado with the passage of House Bill 35 in 1923. We began celebrating the 100-year opening of Western in January of 2011. We have named this year of celebration “Heritage to Horizon” to make clear we are celebrating both our past and our future. There is much to learn and appreciate from our history, and many opportunities to look forward to. The next Century holds unlimited potential and promise, and we look forward to taking this exciting journey with you!

Western’s 100th celebration continued with Homecoming 2011

to commemorate the College’s incredible past and amazing future! Attendees enjoyed a busy schedule of events that included the Homecoming Kick-Off Celebration and the traditional lighting of the “W,” a President’s Breakfast and the Western Flames Celebration, for Western alumni who met their spouses at WSC.

Taylor Hall Re-Dedication.

The Homecoming weekend also included a The building which has stood tall and proud for 100 years just received a complete renovation for its centennial. The project included preserving Taylor Hall’s historic features while adding a Welcome Center and completely transforming the interior and updating the infrastructure. The renovation also earned LEED Silver certification for energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable design.

Celebration of Giving Each year, the Western State College Foundation holds its scholarship donor/ recipient dinner, the Celebration of Giving, a family-style Thanksgiving meal. It has grown in the past decade, from a lunch of 80 people into a banquet, with nearly 200 people attending. The relationships formed between scholarship donors and recipients are powerful and touching, and this Banquet gives them the opportunity to establish those connections. A meaningful event, the Celebration of Giving was made even more significant this year as it coincided with Western’s Heritage to Horizon to celebrate WSC’s 100th birthday.

Joshua Tobey (’00),

commissioned by the Oates Family to sculpt a Bull & Bear for the entrance of the Borick Business Building, was contracted by Western State College Foundation to create a 9’ bronze Mountaineer to stand proudly in the new campus entrance, and welcome all to Western’s campus and the newly completed Taylor Welcome Center. On Saturday, December 10th, 2011, the Mountaineer was dedicated to L. Richard “Dick” Bratton (’54) during the last celebration of Heritage to Horizon, the 100 year anniversary of Western opening the doors to higher education on Colorado’s Western Slope in 1911. A three-sport athlete in football, basketball and wrestling for the Mountaineers in the 1950s, Dick was the Founder of the Western State College Foundation and a former member of the Western State College Foundation Board of Directors. Dick was also one of the leaders in the effort to raze the Ruland Middle

School building. Dick served on the Board of Trustees for the State Colleges of Colorado from 1963-75, which at the time included Western State College. Dick’s daughters, Susan Bratton and Sara Bratton Bradbury, and husband Tom, pledged 50% of the cost to match gifts from alumni and friends who wished to honor Dick and provide a monument to Western’s strength. WSC Foundation Board member Bob (’77) McGraw, and his wife, Marjorie, made a lead gift of $27,000 to the challenge, and WSC Board of Trustee member Todd (’90) Wheeler and his wife, Laura (’91) donated $11,000 to this meaningful fund. The family of Paul M. Rady (’78), a former member of the Western State College Board of Trustees and Past-President of the WSC Foundation Board of Directors, also made a generous gift of $5,000.

Board Members were asked:

“Given we can no longer rely on Federal and State financial support, philanthropy reflecting the hearts and minds of each WSC donor is our greatest opportunity to succeed.” David McEntire (’80) President, WSC Foundation President, AmStar Homes, Inc.

“With Federal and State budgets being slashed over the recent years and foreseeable in the coming years, the financial support and existence of State universities and colleges relies heavily on the philanthropic giving of U.S. citizens. The State of Colorado has turned its focus away from higher education in hopes that private citizens will personally fund the budgets of the Colorado colleges and universities. The future growth and welfare of Western weighs greatly on the gracious philanthropy of those who give of their personal assets.” Art Harter (’78) Vice President, WSC Foundation Senior Vice President, Investments, Smith Barney 12

“It will be the continued investment of capital paired with intellectual capital and passion that will fuel the transformation of Western over the next 100 years. As the western family grows so do the opportunities, so get involved and give back to a place that is special to all of us!” Gerry Shear (’92) Secretary, WSC Foundation Interim CEO, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada Managing Partner, GENCO Realty Group and President, GSA Management

“Our priority as a Foundation is to build the endowment, provide resources for renovations and supply current operating funds. Unfortunately, the economic reality is that we can no longer rely on state funding for higher education so we must develop a mentality and build a culture of philanthropy not only in our alumni, but in our students, faculty and staff. We must also be aware of the paradigm shift in philanthropic giving. What matters most now for donors are results. So how does the Foundation spend gifts most effectively to encourage bright students to want to enroll in Western and stay? Like other Foundations, we must now spend money the way the donors made their money, which means being highly critical in evaluating what works and what doesn’t. Focusing on what works will hopefully be a catalyst for future support at Western.” Hank Windmoeller (’73) Treasurer, WSC Foundation Chief Operating Officer, Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz, LLP

“When reflecting on the history of our great College and reading what Jay Helman wrote about the courage of the people of Gunnison and early founders of Western had in making the College a reality, I would believe that philanthropy has and always will be one of the top priorities of Western. The past 100 years have produced an amazing number of talented individuals and events that have affected all of our lives and world events. There are things I have heard and witnessed that make me understand that it is not the size of the institution or the number of dollars involved, but quality and commitment of everyone involved. The past 100 years have been filled with all types of philanthropy from the giving of time and money, sharing of knowledge, and the ability to always work together as a team to achieve what seems to be an impossible result. I have to say that it has been truly an honor and privilege to be a part of the past 100 years and being chosen one of the top 100 alumni was an unexpected honor. We should thank all individuals that have ever been involved in the success of the College as it has been truly a team effort.” Donald W. Prosser (’73, ’75) Immediate Past-President, WSC Foundation Owner, Donald W. Prosser PC 13

“The role of philanthropy in Western’s next 100 years will be vital. The current financial and economic conditions will require more and more donations by individuals as the state and federal government’s financial support will continue to be reduced. For students to be able to attend excellent colleges like WSC the role of private benefactors will become even more vital for students to obtain a cost effective education. Economic changes will undoubtedly occur and the economy will recover; however, the role of philanthropy will continue to be a vital resource for Western as it continues to improve the education, programs, and facilities necessary to maintain WSC as an outstanding college.” Terry Brace (’74, ’78) President/CEO, Brace Leadership Associates

“Philanthropy is beginning to play the role at Western that it has for generations at private colleges–that is, a CRITICAL role.” James Christian Managing Member, Benolivia, LLC “In these financially challenging times it is difficult to see beyond a few years. Nonetheless, philanthropy that aids students of all economic backgrounds-indeed, the next generation of philanthropists–in attending Western will not only ensure Western’s robust institutional health over the century, but that of these United States of America as well.” Barry Clifford (’69) Underwater archaeological explorer

“The work and vision of many in the last one hundred years has positioned Western to move into a unique and special place in higher education. So much of such quality has been accomplished! The philanthropy of friends and alumni in the next one hundred years can build on this base and allow Western to reach its full potential.” Donna Faulkner (’68) Owner and CFO, Faulkner Exploration 14

“If the last 10 years are an indication of Western’s ability to succeed and excel, imagine what the next 100 years will accomplish.” Valerie Hastings (’83) Owner, Specialty Plating, Inc. Owner, Valerie J. Hastings, PC

“We are in a period of economic restructuring that will last perhaps a decade. During this period, we should anticipate declining public support and a need for public-private cooperative support for our public higher education. While this will better align the school with the needs of industry, it will entail traumatic change. I don’t believe that philanthropy can or should bridge the declining public funding; therefore, I believe that philanthropy should be a catalytic force incentivizing the strategic changes towards a closer public-private cooperation where the value to the private sector is made clear.” Doug MacGregor Retired Executive, Dell

“Western has the ability to defy the odds, and has taught me to do the same. Philanthropy will continue to be a vital role for Western’s future, and with it I can’t wait to see all that Western has to offer in the next 100 years!” Sean Markey (’93) Director of Neurosurgery, Parker Adventist Hospital

“Philanthropy is the life blood of the future of Western State College. With continued support from the alumni and others we can grow this fine College into a great University.” Robert McGraw, Jr. (’77) President, McGraw and McGraw, CPA, PC

15

“With future state funding for universities and colleges being decreased, philanthropy will become a major factor in obtaining superb instructors, curriculum and financial assistance to incoming students, as well as ensuring longevity.” Jim Musgrave (’64) Community Leader “My wish is that philanthropy play a strong role in Western’s future, both over the next 100 years and beyond. Private giving allows any institution to offer their students so much more than can be accomplished with just public funds. Look at what has been accomplished with private funds at Western over the last several years. Considering that, and with continued support from alumni and friends, I have every expectation that my wish will be fulfilled.” Maxine Pierce (’74) Owner, Topper Foundation “Philanthropy, through forms of public/private partnerships, will be the only way for a quality public higher education system to survive over the next 100 years. As State funding continues to diminish (especially here in Colorado), Western will rely on private gifts to succeed.” Steve Reynolds (’78) Co-Owner and Vice President, Infinity Oil & Gas, Inc. “Philanthropy will play an important role in Western’s next 100 years. As humans, we always seem to be on a quest for a better quality of life and an ever increasing search for knowledge. Those who have been successful in their careers and/or have obtained unique knowledge and insight, realize that it’s important to share with others. It’s that spirit of philanthropy that will continue to propel Western forward in the short term and beyond.” James Shaffer (’73) President, Streetscapes

16

“I think the gigantic importance of Western State College to the vitality and quality of life to or for the greater Gunnison Valley cannot be overstated. I think, in the coming years, the importance of philanthropy to Western State College absolutely cannot be overstated. I furthermore strongly sense and believe that Western State College’s philanthropic efforts will bear more and more fruit to the benefit of the whole community in the years ahead. I see wonderful things ahead for Western State College and Gunnison Valley!” Kip Tindell Owner, The Container Store

“Philanthropy will be even more important in Western’s next 100 years. As former Chair of the Western State College Board of Trustees, I have seen how private support can strengthen and enrich our College. Western’s potential is unlimited with private giving, and it is exciting to see what lies ahead.” Pat Wiesner Retired CEO, Wiesner Publishing

“As the decline in public funding and a troubled economy continue to affect higher education, the only way we maintain the quality education provided by Western is through philanthropic channels. A quality education within a quality environment costs money and we can’t rely on the state or increases in tuition to provide the funding needed for Western to push the boundaries.” Robert Wright (’00) Co-Founder and Executive Vice President, ReachLocal, Inc.

Foundation Board Members Sean Markey (’93), a member of the Western State College Foundation Board of Directors, recently made a gift of $50,000 to the College Center. He explains in his words what Western and giving means to him: “I came to Gunnison in 1989, after a career in the trucking industry. I had it in mind that I would get a business degree. I had been rejected by CU boulder. In fact they very specifically pointed out how un-suitable I was for academics, based on my high school transcript (wow, I did not do well in high school). CU then advised that I go to a community college etc, achieve 40 + credit hours and then reapply. I was not at all interested in the long road to success. My sister had attended Western, based on her good experience at Western, I chose to apply. My now ex-wife and I were accepted into the 1993 class. Coming to Gunnison, giving up everything I had to be there, was frightening and at the same time exciting. During orientation I remember that I did not understand what course curriculums were, or for that matter what general ED meant. I was so embarrassed that I did not know these things, so I just copied what others were doing. Our first year was tough. We did not have enough money for food, so we would wait at Keating’s back door then sneak in, pack our back packs with food and race home (sorry Jay). Obviously things changed. I worked at Crested Butte in the winter and for Scott Noreen Builders in the summer (peeling logs was such fun. Definitely supported my plan for higher education). A lot happened in those four years. I grew as a person, had a child (Mckenzie, the love of my life), got divorced and accomplished a competitive education and graduated with honors. Although what I received from Western was a competitive education, that is not what I will remember the most. At Western, I was never looked down on or deterred from my dreams. Amazingly many people at Western appeared very interested in me. I believe that was what got me through. After my first year I decided (naively) to go to medical school. Many people in my life tried to convince me to transfer to a “bigger more credible” school. I never considered the idea and low and behold I competed with 3500 students for one of 130 seats in CU med school, and I won. After four years in medical school, I again naively decided to become a neurosurgeon. I competed for one of only 18

130 slots in the nation. Again I won. My story is not the only success story at Western. Some of my good friends also made it to med school. Jamie Begler (‘91), Sherry Niccoli (‘93) and Wayne Warnken (’95), just to name a few. I believe my ability to defy the odds has much to do with my time at Western. My professors believed in me, even at times when I did not believe in myself. They were connected to me personally as well, often giving me invaluable advice about life. They also would challenge me in order to prepare me for the rigorous testing, etc. that was soon to come. Subsequently, I was incredibly well trained for med school, as well I had learned that ‘I don’t know’ is not an answer, which has served me well in my current career.”

Rob Wright, a 2000 Western graduate, is also a member of the WSC Foundation Board of Directors. He recently made a gift of $50,000 to Unrestricted funds. “The Foundation Board is made up of a who’s who list of very successful people with degrees from Western... it’s great to see this group so dedicated in providing financial support and leadership for the college,” said Rob. “It just shows how much we all value and care for Western.” Unrestricted funds are vital to the College, and provide extraordinary experiences for Western students. These funds are directed to areas of greatest need, and vary from technological support to scholarships to purchasing materials for the Savage Library. Unrestricted funds exist to help assist Western students. “Western was a very amazing experience for me. I got a great education, built lasting relationships with friends and faculty and had a ton of fun along the way,” said Rob. “Some of the greatest people I’ve ever met I met in Gunnison, Colorado.” “Western is truly a gem not known by many,” explained Rob. “The quality of education I received surpassed my initial expectations by a long shot.” “We are so grateful for all that Sean and Rob do for Western,” said Tom Burggraf, Vice President of Institutional Advancement at Western and Executive Director of the WSC Foundation. “We enjoy working with them, and appreciate their service on the Foundation Board.”

Western State College has announced the establishment of a scholarship honoring a former student, Morgan L. Queal, who graduated from WSC in 1987 at the age of 52.

A committee will determine the annual distribution of the fund, made possible with a gift of $100,000 by Calvin P. Queal, her former husband. Morgan was a journalist for several years, including positions as staff writer, first at The Daily Pantagraph in Bloomington, Illinois, and later at The Denver Post, where she met and married Calvin. The couple’s daughter, Duffy, was born in 1970. The Queals moved in 1971 to Crested Butte, Colorado, where Morgan became editor of the Crested Butte Chronicle. The couple divorced in 1980 but remained close. While in Crested Butte, Morgan owned a yarn shop and taught knitting. She also owned and operated the Mountain Sign Shop, specializing in hand-carved signs. She later enrolled at WSC, where she graduated with honors as a major in English. Morgan graduated from law school at the University of Montana in 1989, with honors, and for five years served as an attorney for the Navajo Nation in Crown Point, New Mexico. Morgan later entered private practice in Saguache, Colorado. She died August 12, 2010 in Grand Junction, Colorado. “Morgan had a special feeling for the poor, the disadvantaged, the persecuted and abused,” Calvin said. “She scorned sham and pretension, and firmly believed in the causes of justice and fairness. We trust recipients of this scholarship will follow her example.” For more about the Morgan L. Queal Memorial Scholarship, please contact the WSC Foundation at (970) 641-2237.

Last year, approximately $300,000 was raised for the scholarship needs of Western State College studentathletes with the support of 351 corporate and individual members. Among public NCAA Division II institutions with football, the Mountaineers continue to be among the national leaders in private support, in part from the generosity of the MAA members.

“We have several dimensions to our athletic fund-raising strategies. The MAA continues to be the heart of our local fund-raising support in several dimensions including corporate partners, general membership, special events and fan support,” said Greg Waggoner, Director of Athletics. “We are blessed to have such an active and loyal group of supporters and a fantastic group of MAA Board Members.”

Western State College President Jay Helman was inducted into the

2011 Mountaineer Hall of Fame Class on October 14, 2011. He served as head Basketball Coach who lead the team to the RMAC Championship and an NCAA Division II tournament in 1992-93. Other inductees included Paul Crews, who also received the Lifetime Athletic Achievement Award for his contributions to collegiate skiing; Kris Curtis, Women’s Basketball record-holder; Harvey Dalton, a four-time RMAC Wrestling champion; and the 1976 Football Team that set multiple program records on the way to the NAIA Division I National Semifinals.

Jay Peck

1917–2010 Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame inductee Jay Peck, a lifelong fan who led the football team onto the field at Mountaineer Bowl in his Tin Lizzy car, passed away Dec. 5, 2010. Jay was a charter member of the Mountaineer Athletic Association and remained as an active member of the Board for several years. A staple at Mountaineer football games – he missed very few games from 1922 through 2006 – Jay led the team out in his miniature Model T Ford from 1970 through 2000 and threw small footballs into the crowd for each Mountaineer touchdown. The car is now on display at the Gunnison Pioneer Museum. Jay’s loyal support for the Mountaineers as a fan made his the first, and so far only, inductee into the Hall of Fame as a “Super Fan.” He received the Sears Division II DieHard Fan of the Year award presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Jay and Marlys made their first trip to the Rose Bowl as part of their winnings for the award. “Jay Peck will be missed, as he has been a part of the Mountaineer Magic for many years,” said Athletic Director Dr. Greg Waggoner. “In fact, he was someone that produced much of that magic.” – From Jared Verner, WSC Sports Information Director

Kenneth Grant MacLennan

1935 – 2011 Western State College of Colorado lost a dear friend, Ken MacLennan (’57), a former student-athlete, coach, faculty member and administrator who passed in January, 2011. Ken enrolled at Western on a basketball scholarship, but quickly made a name for himself with Sven Wiik, and the Mountaineer Ski Program. He helped lead Western to the national ski cross country title in the inaugural NCAA championships in 1954, and set the school record in 1956 for the 880-yard run. Ken was also a member of the sprint medley relay team that set the record at the Rocky Mountain Conference meet in 1956. He qualified for the first U.S. Biathlon Team at the 1960 Olympic Games in Squaw Valley, California. Ken became Assistant Ski Coach at Western for Sven in 1967, and joined the WSC faculty in 1968. He succeeded Sven as head coach in 1969 and started an 18-year career in charge of the Mountaineer Program. Ken doubled as ski coach during his last two seasons as WSC Athletic Director. He reorganized the Century Club to the Mountaineer Century Club, and led renovations to the Mountaineer Bowl for the track, bleachers and scoreboard. He retired as ski coach after the 1987 season, and retired as Athletic Director after the 1988-89 academic year. He retired from the WSC faculty in 1996 and was granted emeritus status. Ken, who is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lynda, and son Kevin, remained active in the Gunnison community, and was a member of the 1996 Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame induction class. He received recognition from Crested Butte Mountain Resort in 1996 for his Outstanding Contribution to the Ski Industry. Gunnison Nordic’s annual “Kenny Mac Ski Fest” was named in his honor, but was changed to the “Gunnison Nordic Winter Fest” at Ken’s request during the 2010 season. The 2011 event in January took place in his memory. The Ken MacLennan Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Ken’s family and friends in honor of Ken. Joan Marie Niccoli Campbell

Oliver H. Woods

1934 – 2011

1923 – 2011

Joan Campbell, a longtime Gunnison resident and graduate of Western State College, died March 1, 2011 after a lengthy illness. Joan is survived by her three children, two sons and a daughter, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Joan grew up on her family’s ranch south of Crested Butte, attending Glacier School, Crested Butte High School and Western. While attending WSC, Joan was involved in the Delta Sigma Epsilon sorority and the marching band. She was voted Miss Western State in 1956. Joan served as Cattlemen’s Days Attendant in 1954 and Cattlemen’s Days Queen in 1956. After receiving her degree from Western in 1956, Joan was hired to teach Biology at Gunnison County High School. It was during this time she met the love of her life, John “J.W.” Campbell, and they married in 1958. J.W. was named Assistant Professor of English at Western in 1961, and was appointed Western’s Director of Information in 1973 and served as Assistant to the President of the College until 1987. For 25 years he was also the Director of Sports Information at Western, earning a respected reputation for his College and for himself. J. W. and Joan developed a special bond with Western’s Wrestling Team and had a sincere appreciation of the wrestlers and their coaches. The members of the Wrestling Team helped with projects around their home and ranch property, and J.W. and Joan often traveled with the wrestlers to watch the tournaments. When J.W. died in 2000, Joan created the J. W. Campbell Wrestling Banquet Fund to hold annual banquets to celebrate the wrestling team in honor of J.W. Family and friends also created the J.W. Campbell Memorial Wrestling Scholarship at Western to celebrate J.W.’s memory and assist student-athletes participating on the Wrestling Team. The Scholarship has now been changed to the J.W. and Joan Campbell Memorial Wrestling Scholarship, to honor Joan’s memory as well.

Western State College of Colorado is mourning the loss of a former Hall of Fame coach, Ollie Woods, the RMAC Men’s Golf Coach of the Century who also led the Mountaineers to a conference championship in football. He died at the age of 88. Ollie was the head coach for the Mountaineers in football, golf, track and field and wrestling. He is the only coach in school history to coach teams to conference championships in two distinct sports. He was inducted into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame in the fourth class of 1998. Ollie’s greatest success and passion was on the golf course, where he led the Mountaineers to the men’s RMAC golf championship eight times in his 20-year coaching career. The Mountaineers threepeated twice, from 1976-78 and 1988-90, and Western still holds the conference record for team championships. Ollie was a well-respected golf instructor, and was one of the first to promote video for swing analysis and the use of nets for indoor practice. He established the successful Rocky Mountain Family Golf School and was also an associate professor of physical education at Western. Family and friends have established a memorial scholarship in Ollie’s name at the Western State College Foundation.

Elva Lea Wise

1914 – 2011 Margaret Darr Crager, a 1936 graduate of Western, made a $325,000 estate gift to Western. Her gift created the Margaret Darr Crager General Scholarship Fund to assist Western students with financial need.

1925 – 2011 Dr. Elva “Lea” Wise, Western State College Emeritus Professor of Business, passed away in Emporia, Kansas on April 30, 2011. She was 85.

Margaret was born in West Virginia, and passed away on May 26, 2011 in Los Gatos, California. After retiring from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Margaret devoted her life to good causes and donated to numerous charity organizations. She is survived by a nephew and many good friends.

Lea graduated from Conway Springs High School in 1943 and received her B.S. in Business Administration from University of Wichita (now Wichita State University) in 1947. She received her M.A. in Business Education in 1959 and her Ph.D. in Business Education in 1968 from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

“We are so thankful for Margaret’s generosity, and excited about the opportunities to help many Western students in honor of her memory,” said Deborah Hoskins, Director of Development/Associate Director of the WSC Foundation.

Wayne Hubert Milheim

Lea was a teacher at several high schools before working as a secretary and office worker at Evans Motor Company in Wichita and then served as a secretary at Control Cells Corporation of Wichita and Boulder. While attending graduate school in Colorado, Lea was a secretary at the Rocky Flats Plant of the Dow Chemical Company in Golden. From 1959 until her retirement in 1984, she was a Professor of Business at Western.

1918 – 2011 Wayne continues his legacy of generosity to Western. He designated a planned gift to Western in the amount of $150,000 to the Wayne H. Milheim Music Scholarship, a fund he previously established to assist selected Western Music students. Wayne attended Mount Pearl Grade School and graduated from Kit Carson High School in 1935. He then attended Barnes Business School graduating in 1937. Wayne worked for the U. S. Geological Survey in Casper, Wyoming until 1941 when he entered the U. S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1945. Wayne’s great love was music and he studied at the Chicago Conservatory majoring and receiving his Bachelor of Music in piano in 1950. He then returned to Cheyenne Wells and began giving private piano and vocal lessons and did so through 1965. Wayne went on to receive a Master’s Degree of Arts from Western State College in 1966. Please contact the WSC Foundation at (970)641-2237 for more information about this fund. – From the Gunnison Times

A Legend of Legacy In March, 2010 the Oil and Gas Industry lost a leader, good man and good friend, Paul Urban, Jr. (’79). Paul’s wife, Ann Marie, colleague Eric McGlone and many friends established the Paul Urban “Legends of Industry” Scholarship Endowment to assist Western students in the Professional Land and Resource Management (PLRM) Program continue their education in Paul’s memory. Paul’s scholarship provides tuition assistance for both high achievement and high need students in Western’s PLRM Program, which Paul helped conceive and to which he made one of the Program’s first major gifts. Paul began his successful career in the oil and gas business as an environmental scientist with Texas Oil & Gas Corporation. Over the following years he worked in management and executive capacities with various oil and gas companies before forming his own company in 2004. He was known throughout the industry for his gregarious manner and was well respected for his creativity and generosity. The Paul Urban “Legends of Industry” Scholarship Endowment is a meaningful way to celebrate Paul’s memory as we educate the next generation of landmen. Recipients of Paul’s scholarship will learn of his achievements, and will carry on his legacy. For more information, please contact Tom Burggraf, Vice President for Institutional Advancement for Western and Executive Director of the WSC Foundation, at (970) 641-2237 or tburggraf@western.edu.
