The 2023 Nutcracker at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts is a production of Westchester Ballet Company, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission of promoting excellence in and access to the arts.

WELCOME TO THE NUTCRACKER Revel in an old-fashioned European Christmas party, choose sides in a fierce battle between toy soldiers and mischievous mice, and accompany Clara as she is guided by Snowflakes to the magical Land of Sweets. Welcome to The Nutcracker. We hope you enjoy this enchanting journey! 2023 marks the third time that Westchester Ballet Company performs at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts. We are so excited to continue sharing our Nutcracker with new friends in the Bronx and surrounding areas again! Westchester Ballet Company was incorporated in 1950, making it one of the oldest regional, nonprofit youth ballet companies in the United States. Founded in and operating out of Ossining, New York, the company is comprised of approximately 100 dancers who are selected each September through open auditions. These dancers come from every corner of Westchester and beyond. Each and every young dancer beautifully represents the talent, richness, and diversity of our community. Now in its 73rd year, the Company is as vibrant, forward-looking, and eager as ever to engage with young dancers and the local community in the pursuit of excellence in dance education and programming. We are ever grateful to Beth Fritz-Logrea and Jean Logrea for their dedication to Westchester Ballet Company as its Artistic Directors since 1986. Their vision has been crucial to preserving this beloved holiday tradition in the community.

While the world and how we engage in culture and entertainment has changed dramatically since our founding, Westchester Ballet Company is steadfast in its firmly held belief that there is great value in bringing people together through shared, communal performing arts experiences—that ballet can be a vehicle through which we can engage young people, help them discover purpose, and work together to engender greater equity in and access to the arts. THE NUTCRACKER Performed by the Westchester Ballet Company Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Choreography by Beth Fritz-Logrea and Jean Logrea

ACT I It is Christmas Eve 1830, in the home of a European city official. He and his wife and children, Clara and Fritz, welcome their guests to their annual Christmas party. Soon after the party begins, Uncle Drosselmeyer arrives, scaring all the children except Clara and Fritz. Every Christmas Drosselmeyer brings the children strange and wonderful toys. This Christmas he has brought a pair of magnificent dancing dolls. Clara asks her uncle if she can keep them, but he has brought her something even better—a toy nutcracker! Jealous, Fritz snatches it from Clara and breaks it. Drosselmeyer bandages the Nutcracker and Clara puts him to bed for the night. The guests leave and all is quiet. Unable to sleep, Clara tiptoes downstairs to be with her Nutcracker. Suddenly mice invade the room! Then, as the clock strikes midnight, Drosselmeyer returns, and to Clara’s astonishment, he magically makes the Christmas tree grow. A battle ensues between the Nutcracker’s cadre of toy soldiers and the mice. When the Nutcracker is threatened by the Mouse King, Clara kills the Mouse King with her shoe and the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome young prince. The Prince invites Clara to journey with him to his real home: the Land of Sweets. They are guided on their way by the Winter Snows, which the magic of Christmas has brought to life.

ACT II Arriving in the Land of Sweets, Clara is welcomed by the Sugarplum Fairy, and Clara’s most beautiful dreams come to life as a series of divertissements begin. From near and far, marvelous characters come to entertain her. Just when Clara thinks she has seen everything beautiful in the world, the Sugarplum Fairy dances with her Cavalier. Soon the Land of Sweets begins to get hazy and Clara opens her eyes to find herself in the old armchair in her parents’ house, wondering if it were all a dream.

Excellence Through Integrity, Experience and Compassionate Care

MEET THE ARTISTIC TEAM BETH FRITZ-LOGREA (Co-Artistic Director) was a protégée of Dame Alicia Markova. She received her early training in Memphis, Tennessee, with Charles Kirby and Manola Agullo. At age 16 she joined the Metropolitan Opera Ballet and continued her career as a principal dancer with Ballet Etudes Repertory Company, Connecticut, St. Gallen Stadt Theatre, Switzerland, and Opernhaus Graz, Austria. She toured Europe dancing leading roles in such ballets as Giselle, Swan Lake, Coppélia, Romeo and Juliet, and Pas de Quatre. She has served as the co-artistic director of Westchester Ballet Company and co-director of the Logrea Dance Academy since 1986. Beth performed the role of Sugarplum Fairy until 1992. JEAN LOGREA (Co-Artistic Director) trained at the Scoala Speciala in Cluj, Romania. He was principal dancer at the Opera House Cluj and a teacher at the affiliated school. He performed extensively throughout Europe and the USSR, dancing such major roles as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, the Jester in Swan Lake, the pas de deux from Le Corsaire, and the Peasant pas de deux from Giselle. In 1986, after 7 years as a principal dancer at Opernhaus Graz, Austria, Jean moved to the U.S. to serve as co-director of Westchester Ballet Company. That same year Jean founded Logrea Dance Academy with Beth Fritz-Logrea. He continues to perform with the Westchester Ballet in a variety of roles, including Uncle Drosselmeyer. NICK LOGREA (Associate Artistic Director) has performed in Westchester Ballet Company’s Nutcracker for more than 30 years. He has performed as a soloist in Les Patineurs, La Bayadère, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter and the Wolf, La Boutique Fantasque, Tales of Vienna, and A Glenn Miller Nutcracker. He regularly appears as The Butler, Mouse King, and Coffee from Arabia in The Nutcracker. As Associate Artistic Director, Nick focuses on sharing his knowledge of Westchester Ballet Company's repertoire. Nick is an active Zumba Education Specialist, teaching Master Classes in the U.S. and abroad, and a Zumba instructor at LifeTime Fitness. He is also an Associate Director at Logrea Dance Academy where he teaches jazz. SHARYN KOREY (Rehearsal Director) is originally from Crotonon-Hudson, NY, and received her early training at Logrea Dance Academy. She performed with the Westchester Ballet Company for seven years before joining Richmond Ballet, where she performed in Serenade, Coppélia, Nutcracker, and original works. She earned a degree in International Studies from Middlebury College and then moved to Brooklyn to work as a freelance dancer. An ABT certified instructor, she currently teaches ballet at the Mark Morris Dance Center and is an adjunct instructor of dance at Hofstra University. She’s also the co-founder of NACHMO, a choreography festival open to everyone, and the director of Sunset Park Dance, a studio in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

MEET THE GUEST ARTISTS JULIANNA BROWN (Chocolate from Spain) received her training at Logrea Dance Academy from age 3 to 18 and attended prestigious summer intensive training programs at ABT, Bolshoi Ballet Academy, Manhattan Youth Ballet, and Walnut Hill. She performed with Westchester Ballet Company for a decade, dancing nearly every Nutcracker role available to a youth dancer. She is thrilled to be back as a guest artist. Julianna is a recent graduate of Trinity College, where she earned a double-major BA in Theater & Dance and Psychology. She is currently pursuing musical theater opportunities in NYC with the dream of building a stage career that combines her love of singing and dancing.

PHILIP GABRIEL PEREZ (Cavalier) Born in Medellín, Colombia, raised in NYC. Attended ABT’s JKO School. Cast by Alexei Ratmansky as the Young Prince in ABT’s The Nutcracker, which he reprised for three years, performing in NYC and DC’s Kennedy Center. Continued his training at Boston Ballet School. Member of Nashville Ballet II and Colorado Ballet’s Studio Company, dancing in ballets by George Balanchine, Twyla Tharp, Antony Tudor, Michael Pink, and Derek Deane. Awarded second-place at Miami IBC 2019. Currently a member of Boulder Ballet, performing works by Christopher Wheeldon and Paul Taylor, and originating roles in new creations.

DANNYS GONZALEZ (Snow King) is a native of Cuba. He trained and graduated from the Cuban National Ballet School in Havana. He began his professional career in the Cuban National Ballet and In 2009 became a soloist in Ballet de Cuba company. His classical repertoire includes major roles in Swan Lake, Coppélia, Don Quixote, La Bayadère, La Sylphide, Paquita, and The Nutcracker. Gonzalez is also a teacher of classical ballet, and he has toured around the world with the show Ballet Revolución. After moving to New York Dannys trained at the Alvin Ailey School. He has guested with Westchester Ballet Company for many years.

EMMA MICHAUX (Sugarplum Fairy) Artist with Boulder Ballet. Performed in ballets by Christopher Wheeldon, Amy Seiwart and Paul Taylor. Originated roles in works by Caili Quan, Amy Hall-Gardner, Sidra Bell, Gregory Dawson, Makino Hayashi, Viki Bromberg Psihoyos, Ben Needham-wood, and Claudia Anata Hubiak. Classical repertoire: Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the Sugarplum Fairy and Clara from The Nutcracker, the Black Swan pas de deux, Princess Aurora in The Sleeping Beauty, and the Diana and Acteon pas de deux. Performed with BalletNEXT, Zikr Dance Ensemble, and Thomas Dance Project. Awards: Denver Ballet Guild Young Dancers Competition and the Esther Geoffrey Scholarship Competition.

PETRO PITULA (Hopak) was born in Stryj, Ukraine and is a senior at Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. His dance journey began at the Barvinok School of Ukrainian Dance in South Bound Brook, NJ. In 2017, he joined the Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and is currently one of the lead soloists in the company. Petro also dances with the Syzokryli Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and the Yunist Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, both in New York City. He is an instructor at the School of the Voloshky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, and he attends and teaches at the Roma Pryma Bohachevsky Ukrainian Dance camps and workshops in the Catskills.

METHAWEE (PLU) SAYAMPOL (Mother Ginger) was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand and have been dancing and performing in NYC (and around the world) since 2009. Classically trained at Aree School of Dance Arts and Point Studio (Thailand), Plu moved to NYC to pursue more training at Steps on Broadway where he is now a faculty member, teaching jazz dance and theater jazz dance classes. Plu has danced for Katy Perry on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, been featured on The View, Pantene’s commercial (worldwide) and recently was invited to be on the judging panel for the prestigious Miss Universe Thailand 2023 pageant.

ELISA TORO FRANKY (Snow Queen, Coffee from Arabia) is a professional dancer, teacher, choreographer, and bilingual voiceover artist based in New York City. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Elisa trained with Cuban mentors and traveled twice to Cuba for international ballet intensives and competitions. She came to the U.S. in 2004 to train at the Miami City Ballet School. She later danced with the Washington Ballet Studio Company, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble, and the New Jersey Ballet. Elisa currently performs with FJK Dance and Accent Dance NYC, as well as works as an instructor with the Misty Copeland Foundation. Elisa has guested with Westchester Ballet Company since 2016.

WESTCHESTER BALLET COMPANY! Auditions are open to all dancers, ages 6 - 18, no matter where they live or receive their ballet instruction, as long as they meet the training requirements associated with the rank in which they are placed in the Company.
