I would like to resurrect the Citizens Advisory Board.

The Citizens Advisory Board was introduced in 2015 but unfortunately due to members relocating or other commitments faded away. I am seeking out some motivated residents to get the “CAB” going again. The “CAB” role is to “serve the citizens of the village by acting as an advisory body to the corporate authorities of the village, in order to address resident concerns, encourage volunteerism, promote centralized commerce, advocate for educational excellence and advocate for seniors and those in need.” They will hold regular meetings and consist of seven members with two year terms. If anyone is interested in joining the Citizens Advisory Board please email me at nsteker@ westchester-il.org. Additionally the Village is in the process of hiring full-time in several areas. Please check the Village website for job opportunities.

From the desk of Acting Village President Nick Steker

School is back in session and summer has come to an end. This year’s construction season projects are concluding but are behind schedule due to the almost eight week long quarry worker’s strike. The quarry workers dig and crush stone and sand that is used as the aggregate for concrete and asphalt. The strike affected not only local road projects but also larger scale projects throughout the Chicago metropolitan area such as 294 and the Jane Byrne Interchange. The State of Illinois is very specific to the type of mix used for projects funded by state revenues. The closing of these quarries put a stranglehold on all of the ongoing projects. Several of the projects were able to continue with water main replacement and other infrastructure repairs, however staff was concerned that if the strike did not end when it did that we would be forced to stop the reconstruction due to the uncertainty of completion before the weather turns. We are happy to say that all projects will be completed. Again this was a situation completely out of the hands of the Village and staff, and we were not alone in this. Thank you for your patience during this time.

The Village has expanded the role of the grant writer that the police department has been utilizing for several years with much success. Administrative Consulting Specialists LLC has been retained to assist staff in funding and grant opportunities for all village services. The Village has been the recipient of several grants including the green alley grants through Cook County. We look forward to continued success on a greater scale with their new expanded role.

The Village has partnered with Hillside in the CodeRed notification system. Upon implementation it will allow residents to be informed of time-sensitive information, emergency notifications, as well as dayto-day operational updates such as the street paving program. More information to follow from Fire Chief Mavrogeorge who is also in the process of updating the Village’s Emergency Plan. This real time notification system will be a key part of the plan getting good information to residents in a timely fashion.

Cook county commissioner Frank Aguilar visited with President Steker at the Village Hall to discuss potential funding opportunities.

Also, please do not drive around buses when they are loading and off-loading children. Please always come to a complete stop at all stop signs and look both ways before going through the intersections, especially for kids, cars not stopping, or cars fighting for their right of way. Every year residents contact our police department asking for traffic enforcement regarding stop signs and speeding violations. This year we have written numerous traffic violations and the main reason people violate speed signs and stop signs is because they are in a hurry! In my 36 years of law enforcement the main reason drivers have killed bicyclist, pedestrians, motorcycle riders, or other drivers was being in a hurry. The sad part is that they all regretted that they couldn’t turn back time even for one hour! Speed is the number one killer when it comes to any vehicle or pedestrian accidents.
