News – If you are passing by the Carp Airport the evening of Nov. 20 and notice a flurry of flashing lights and emergency vehicles, don’t worry. Airport authorities are only testing out their emergency plan. For the second time since 2010, a mock disaster will be held at the airport. The event, which will simulate real-life situations which could occur in a crisis, will

run from 7 – 10 p.m. and will involve all three emergency service providers – police, fire and ambulance. According to mock disaster training exercise project facilitator Mel Robertson, a retired Ottawa Police staff sergeant and West Carleton resident, the exercise is designed to test where the airport’s emergency plan is at and highlight opportunities for improvement. The Bank of Canada vault in the Diefenbunker museum’s basement is a bleak and stern place at the best of times. But when children’s colourful artwork filled the room and many of the speeches focused on peace throughout the world, Remembrance Day on Monday was both hopeful and a commemoration of sacrifices made. News – With a whopping nine people in attendance, the West Carleton budget consultation meeting last Wednesday evening had the distinction of drawing the biggest crowd of any similar event elsewhere in the city. “I’m happy to report this is probably the largest turnout of any budget consultation,” said West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry. “Not having as many people here is a sign people are happy with the budget.” Joining El-Chantiry for the meeting was deputy city treasurer Ken Hughes, who has attended the West Carleton budget consultation for many
years. This, however, was to be his last one having been appointed the city’s auditor general last month. “This has always been the best budget session in the city,” Hughes explained. The proposed 2014 Ottawa budget calls for a 1.9 per cent tax increase, which means an increase of $55 on a rural tax bill and an increase of $63 for an urban resident. That amount is based on an average assessment of $350,000. Hughes said the tax increase for rural residents is $49 over last year’s budget, adding council made it clear to staff they wanted to keep the tax increase under two per cent.
