Sports - For the first time ever, a West Carleton Soccer Club team has participated in the World Masters tournament. The Stray Cats, a group of active ladies competing in the over-40 years division, left for Turin, Italy on July 31. The World Masters Games is an international multi-sport event held every four years. In terms of competitor numbers, the event has developed into the largest of its kind. “We would like to thank the community for over the last year supporting the WCSC kids soccer tournament canteen, a garage sale at Cheshire Cat, and various small fundraisers in the community,” said player Karen Delcourt. “And we really appreciate our local sponsor support.” See WCSC Page 14

Flying into a land of imagination The Carp Library held a special interactive storytelling event on July 30. Bringing the story to life is Tante Carolyn as she takes young Rachel Wilson for a short flight. More pictures on Page 16.

Garlic festival a sniff away Community - Carp Farmers’ Market will host what has grown to be the largest Garlic Festival in Canada and the third largest in North America on Aug. 10 and 11. Twenty eight garlic vendors, featuring samples from 60-plus of the best tasting garlic varieties grown in Eastern Ontario, will be manning their booths at the Carp Fair grounds. The festival f features not only the stinking rose but a huge selection of dips, preserves, and assorted ways of using and preserving garlic. John Moore, Chair of the Carp Farmers’ Garlic Committee and a local garlic

grower, points out that this festival “has grown like crazy over the years. “Last year alone we had something like 22,000 visitors over the two days even though the weather wasn’t that good.” Featured events include garlic cooking, tasting and braiding sessions plus the always popular garlic growing and “best booth” contest where vendors go all out to decorate their stands. This year the prize for best booth will be presented by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson.
