Crime rates drop in West Carleton Drunk driving numbers citywide still troubling: Coun. Jessica Cunha jessica.cunha@metroland.com
News - A disturbing number of people are still drinking and driving in Ottawa. Crime trends are down across the city, including in West Carleton, but 10 out of 23 wards saw an increase in impaired driving, according to the Ottawa police 2013 annual report. Citywide, drunk driving was down by four per cent in 2013 – to 649 people instead of the 676 charged in 2012 (up from 660 in 2011). One ward, Rideau-Vanier, stayed the same – 79 people were charged in both 2013 and 2012. “People out there, is anybody paying attention to this? It’s 2014. There’s no need to drink and drive,” said West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, chair of the Ottawa police board.

“After all these messages – after all the ads on TV, losing your licence, the financial cost alone – it should be incentive enough to stop and think.” With a population of 943,260 in the city, that’s 0.07 per cent of residents who are getting caught behind the wheel of a vehicle while impaired. “One’s too many,” said El-Chantiry. There were three deaths in 2013 and one the previous year as a result of impaired driving, said the councillor. “As long as we still have deaths on our highways with impaired drivers, it will still be an issue until we get to zero,” said Ottawa police Const. Marc Soucy. He added that police continue to issue warnings and safety tips about driving under the influence. El-Chantiry, who lost his mother to a drunk driver in Lebanon 19 years ago, said he doesn’t understand why people continue to get in their vehicles after imbibing a number of drinks. “I don’t know,” he said, when asked what the answer is. “Folks really, it’s 2014. We have options. We have multiple options.” See EXPECT, Page 3
