EMC news - The vote was nearly unanimous, 23-1 in favour of supporting the move to raise $733,00 to expand the Constance Bay community centre, but not without a little controversy. More than 30 people attended Sunday afternoon’s public meeting to seek support for the Sandhills Project. The entire price tag is estimated at $2 million, but the remaining equal contributions of $633,000 will have to come from the City of Ottawa Library Board and the City of Ottawa. The main controversy was that the June 17 public meeting was Father’s Day, to the chagrin of several residents in the audience and a reason given that dozens more people didn’t attend the two-hour session. Sunday’s meeting allowed Ian Glen, the president of the Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Association, to introduce the project, before handing it over to another director, volunteer project manager Len Russell, for details. West Carleton-March Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, a former Constance Bay business owner and resident himself who owns property in West Carleton, also stepped forward to point out that approval was being sought from the

Glen also used his time to stress the importance of late August’s 10 Bay Days to celebrate the community’s 90year history and to help raise funds for the Sandhills Project.

The focus of the Sandhills Project is a two-storey, 4,500-square foot expansion to the current two-storey, 10square foot facility. The current building started with 8,000 square feet, and had a subsequent 2,000 added. A local cottager, who didn’t identify himself, accused the gathering of railroading through the approval to raise the $733,000. Only one other person in the room appeared to agree with him. That was Fran Dawson, who had the only dissenting vote on the day’s only motion. “Be it moved, said the motion, “that the CBBCA facilitate the efforts of the community and CBBCA for the purpose of raising and allocating $733,000 for the completion of the Sandhills Project. The community association would pay $100,000 more than the other two contributing parties to pay for additional renovations. The extra $100,000 is for renovations to the old library space and canteen area. Development of this project, with the help of Ottawa city staff, has been unusually brisk, said both Russell and El-Chantiry, and it was appropriate to maintain this brisk order of business. “This project has gone extraordinarily fast since the fourth quarter of last year, said Russell, when he noted See CENTRE, page 6
