West Carleton Secondary School could be up for an expansion according to a draft recommendation from an accommodation review committee looking to reduce overcrowding in Kanata’s schools.

But the expansion should only happen if the Ottawa public school board fails to build a new school in Kanata north within two years, said the Kanata North Accommodation Review Committee, which held a public meeting at Earl of March Secondary School in Kanata on Nov. 16.

The committee presented two options to the public during its fourth and final meeting; one if there is no new elementary school built in the area, and one if a new building is constructed by 2015. “We obviously know as a district we need to build more capacity,� said Karyn Ostafichuk, manager of planning for the Ottawa public school board.

The board had a site set aside in the KNL development lands in the Beaver Pond area, but Ostafichuk said it doesn’t have access to the land because of the environmental issues. “We can’t get to that now,� she said. “There are no alternatives up there set aside.�

She said the board is looking at new sites and is making some progress, but it doesn’t have anything concrete. “We don’t have anything to announce‌at this time,â€? said Ostafichuk.

Ottawa’s country fest is moving west as Capital Hoedown makes Kanata’s Walter Baker Park its new home next August.

From Friday, Aug. 10 to Sunday, Aug. 12 top-notch headliners such as Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley and Reba McEntire will turn Kanata into the most happening place in the city.

Capital Hoedown organizers met at Crazy Horse saloon off Terry Fox Drive in Kanata on Tuesday, Nov. 22 to announce the star-studded line-up, which also includes Canadians Gord Bamford, Marshall Dane, Tara Oram and High Valley. Superstar veteran Terri Clark will also appear on Sunday.

Concert International president Denis Benoit, who has organized the country festival since it launched in 2010, said the move from Lebreton Flats where it was held in 2011 was purely practical.

“Lebreton Flats isn’t big enough.

We were completely full last year, and with this year’s line up we’re expecting to double the crowd,” Benoit said.

“We’re at the point now where with Taylor Swift, the biggest artist in the world not just in country music, at the end of the day we just wouldn’t be able to fit all those people in Lebreton Flats.”

Lebreton Flats, being downtown, also had a significant parking problem, he added. In 2010 the festival was held at the Rideau Carleton Raceway in Ottawa South, but the festival outgrew that location as well.

Benoit said he doesn’t think there will be any negative effect from moving the hoedown out west, especially with Swift in its arsenal.

“Its 10 minutes from downtown, and there’s a great public transit system going out there. People have to go out that way for any other big event at Scotiabank Place, and people go,” he said.

Benoit said they are hoping to make Walter Baker Park the hoedown’s permanent home, although Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley said that

ing policies could look like, and how to apply for funding to help them with whatever measures they are already taking to prevent water contamination.

These could include using certain types of safer pesticides in safer quantities, taking the pesticide safety course, or following the safeguards set out by the Nutrient Management Act. Funding can be applied for until Dec. 1, 2012.

The purpose of the open house was to share information that has been gathered since the study’s inception in 2009, and to collect community responses to the proposed policies.

“We’re looking for any feedback,” Casgrain-Robertson said. “If they support the draft policy, if they have an alternative idea… We’re trying to get a sense of whether the policies will be affective for protecting source water, and if they’re reasonable for the local community. And if they’re not, we would love to hear alternative suggestions.”

Feedback will be accepted until Dec. 2, at which time the taskforce will compile the responses, use it to adapt the existing draft policies, and present two more rounds of public consultation in the first half of 2012.

As the policies are still in a state of infancy, this is the best time for people to help shape what the policies will look like, Casgrain-Robertson said.

The Carp open house was one of five hosted across the Mississippi-Rideau region between Nov. 14-24.

Casgrain-Robertson estimated that about 10 community members attended the one in Carp.

The other 10 areas included in the MRSPC’s jurisdiction that will be affected by the upcoming policy changes are Almonte, Carleton Place, Kemptville, Merrickville, Munster, Perth, Richmond, Smiths Falls, Urban Ottawa (Britannia and Lemieux Island) and Westport.

New drinking water safeguard policies put in place after a water protection study won’t change much for property owners in Carp, said a representative from the Mississippi-Rideau Source Protection Committee (MRSPC).

During an open house at the Carp Agricultural Hall on Nov. 21, Sommer Casgrain-Robertson said that many of the MRSPC’s recommendations to improve municipal drinking water safety are already being practiced by residents in the area.

“Municipal water has tons of regulations,” Casgrain-Robertson said.

“Ontario drinking water at this point is among the safest in the world. Our work is coming out of Walkerton, and so did a number of other regulations and rules. It’s very safe, and so what we’re doing is adding another layer of protection.”

This extra layer is required by the Clean Water Act which was passed in Ontario in October of 2006, requiring water conservation authorities (like the MRSPC) to develop plans to keep drinking water safe.

Carp is one of 11 regions within the Mississippi-Rideau region being surveyed by this study.

Carp’s municipal well is located between Carp Road and Donald B. Munro Drive, and the 100-metre area surrounding that well is a highly vulnerable region. Groundwater in that area reaches the well within two years.

The open house showed maps of municipal wells in the Mississippi-Rideau region, and laid out preliminary policy drafts that are open to suggestions, alternatives and feedback.

All new policies will affect the properties within the 100-metre range surrounding the well, and some policies will effect properties beyond that range.

New policies will address issues including waste disposal sites, pesticides and nutrients like manure and biosolids.

A list of twelve potential drinking water threats were proposed by the province under the Clean Water Act. Each local region must come up with a policy to address each threat, meaning that the policies will vary across the province.

“We’ve looked into that course and found that it’s very robust and does a good job of managing that threat, so we’re not requiring anything above and beyond that,” Casgrain-Robertson said.

The new policy would prohibit large pesticide storage facilities within the 100-metre range; for example, a manufacturing or retail company selling pesticides.

“None exist in the vicinity right now,” Casgrain-Robertson said. “If you establish a new one in the future, why not do it 10 kilometres down the road where it’s safer?”

No policy proposed so far would require farmers to install water purification systems as was previously reported by this paper.

“We’re not really requiring more than what is your average, well-known, best management practice for agriculture,” Casgrain-Robertson said. “It would just be a matter of carrying on with that.”

When the study was first launched in 2009, community members in the municipal well’s vicinity received a letter from the MRSPC informing them of the upcoming process. An open house was held in Carp that year as well.

Since then, the team conducting the study has evaluated the well and groundwater to determine which areas are most at risk. The land is ranked on a scale from one to 10, one carrying the least risk of water contamination and 10 the highest. The higher numbers are generally closer to the well, but could also mean that the soil is thinner or more permeable in that region.

“If you had, say, a chemical spill in an area like that, it could reach its way to the groundwater more easily,” Casgrain-Robertson said, “Even if it’s further from the well.”

It’s in those high-risk places that the policies will be implemented, she said.

Committee to present recommendations to public board on Dec. 15 Changes must be made in existing schools, or a new one built, before 2015 when full-day kindergarten must be implemented in all Ontario schools.

“The number of kindergarten classes you need are going to double,” said Cathy Briggs, chairperson of the Kanata North ARC. As it stands, there are not enough spaces for students in 2012. With student projection numbers, there will be 3,399 students in Kanata north schools in 2012, and currently there are only spaces for 2,457, said Briggs.

“We don’t have enough spaces for students,” she said.

The committee received around 280 feedback sheets from the third public meeting, which was held in October.

“I can tell you honestly that we read every single one,” said Briggs.

Three major points were outlined by parents who provided their opinions: • A large majority of South March Public School parents preferred kindergarten students to remain at that school.

• A large majority of Stephen Leacock Public School parents were against the grades 7 to 12 model for West Carleton and Earl of March secondary schools.

• A majority of Jack Donohue Public School parents were cautiously optimistic towards the grades 7 to 12 model for high schools, with special considerations.

‘FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE’

OPTION 1 The first draft recommendation was the option put forward by the ARC if no new elementary school is built in Kanata north.

It included that all grades 7 and 8 students would be redirected to their area high school, either West Carleton or Earl of March, and both secondary schools receive facility expansions.

All elementary schools would serve students from junior kindergarten to Grade 6.

Roland Michener Public School would offer dual-track programming and South March would receive an eight-classroom expansion.

OPTION 2 The second draft recommendation was the option put forward by the ARC if a new elementary school is built in Kanata north, with construction starting by April 2013.

It recommended both secondary schools, West Carleton and Earl of March, would remain the same with grades 9 to 12 students. The buildings would receive no expansions.

A review of attendance boundaries, grade structures and programs would have to be conducted at all elementary schools.

South March would receive an eightclassroom expansion.

Briggs said both options were made because they were the most “fiscally responsible” choices and because the ARC wanted to recommend something feasible to the board.

“Many, many factors were considered,” she said, adding the decisions made by the committee were “student-based.”

Two parents spoke about their concerns regarding student safety for grades 7 and 8 students attending a high school.

Both said if the first option is the one chosen, they want to see the grades 7 and 8 students isolated from the older crowd.

Jill Bennett, superintendent of instruction for Kanata schools with the public board, said student safety and programming is taken seriously.

“I don’t want you to think we’re just making a rush decision,” she said.

Transition teams would be put in place to help Grade 6 students become familiar with their future high school.

The ARC also recommended certain special considerations if the grades 7 to 12 model is chosen: • No movement of the students until the extensions at the high schools are complete.

• Have separate entrances for intermediate and high school students.

• Have different scheduling so intermediate and high schools students are not in the halls or common areas at the same time.

• The extensions must address specialty rooms such as gyms, music and technology rooms, not just classrooms.

• Have a limited impact on high school facilities.

• Offer information nights held for parents to address concerns and questions.

• A transition team must be in place and working with the Grade 6 students and parents during the Grade 6 year.

FINAL RECOMMENDATION The Kanata North ARC will present its final recommendation to the school board trustees on Dec. 15, after considering all feedback from the fourth public meeting.

Feedback about the draft recommendations must be received by Nov. 30, and can be emailed to kanatanorthelemarc@ ocdsb.ca.

A public meeting will be held on March 5, 2012, where parents can raise final concerns with the trustees. A final decision will be made April 24.

“I’m asking you to take a step back and think before sending your feedback in,” said Briggs, asking parents to consider what would be best for the students.

“We’re all just parents and we’re trying our best.”

Richcraft buys naming rights for rec complex

Richcraft Group of Companies will pay half a million dollars to put its name on the new Kanata north recreation complex.

The 8,825-square-metre complex will feature a 25 m lap pool, a leisure pool, a community centre, two gymnasiums, a fitness centre, outdoor fields, indoor courts, a skate park and now, signs bearing the builder’s name.

The option of a $500,000 payment for naming rights was originally included in a 2010 report to city council. Richcraft sent a letter on Oct. 17 to express interest in purchasing naming rights.

The company is one of the most ubiquitous builders in Ottawa, and according to its website, it is the city’s largest landowner. The local company is almost 30 years old and sells more than 500 homes annually in 15 neighbourhoods across the city, from downtown condos to suburban townhomes. In Kanata, Richcraft developed Brookside and the Kanata Lakes development.

The payments would be spread out in annual $100,000 contributions and would give Richcraft the naming rights for 15 years, until 2026.

The money is part of the fundraising efforts of the rec centre steering committee, led by Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson.

The group needs to raise enough to increase the number of lanes in the lap pool from six to eight (at a cost of $850,000), to enlarge the skate park (an extra $400,000) and provide money to offset the increased operating costs associated with those additions.

In addition to the $500,000 from Richcraft, the group has fundraised about $100,000, Wilkinson said. More money will come from a sponsored sculpture garden at the rec centre.

Richcraft’s contribution will entitle it to signs both outside and inside the facility, the use of the facility’s Richcraft name in all promotional material.

Wilkinson said the city will need to hammer out a sponsorship agreement with Richcraft after council gives the naming a final thumb’s up, but it’s likely that Richcraft would have to pay for any additional signs the company might want,

beyond the main outdoor sign.

NO COMPETITION The naming proposal might take some heat because it was endorsed by the city’s committee without seeking a competitive bid.

The city’s corporate sponsorship and advertising policy states that, in general, sponsorships should be put to a competitive bid if they are offer “significant corporate profile,” if they are for periods of longer than three years and if the agreement gives exclusive benefits and recognition to the company or person.

Those criteria all apply to the Richcraft proposal, but there are situations in which the competition can be skipped. Those situations include: if the sponsorship opportunity is “unique, innovative or experimental,” if the value is less than $50,000, if the need is justified in a business case presented by a deputy city manager, or if only one suitable sponsor can be identified – the reason used in this case.

But West Carleton-March Coun. Eli ElChantiry said the rec centre is a special case. The facility had already been scaled back due to the loss of a planned partnership with the YMCA, and the community is still trying to make up a shortfall in funding to ensure it gets the best facility possible.

“We’ve been trying for a while to get this kind of support,” El-Chantiry said.

The city had been working in partnership with the YMCA for about a year and a half to build an enhanced recreation facility. Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson said she first heard rumblings that the YMCA might be pulling its funding last fall, but it wasn’t until March 2 when the organization officially announced it couldn’t afford to give the $6 million it committed to.

That means scaling back the facility by about 1,393.5 square metres. Components the community won’t be seeing include the second gymnasium, a running track, enlarged individual and group fitness spaces, family activity zones and a dedicated child-minding/playcare space.

Scaling it back will make it worth around $43 million.

Construction of the rec centre will start next month and is set to be completed by September of 2013.

And when you’re at home, you might not have time to spend and teach them those important life skills. So it’s nice for the parents to be involved in this.”

Nicholas Savoie, a 12-year-old who lives in Constance Bay, has been working with HANDS for a year.

“It’s a good way to learn your way around the community and to make some money,” he said.

The fall triggers a lot of phone calls for raking, and Savoie spends his weekends clearing yards for his neighbours.

He said that he thinks more youth should get involved in the program, and that he will keep working to accumulate some money.

“I’m saving up for a dirt bike right now,” he said, acknowledging that it would be a long time before he reached that goal.

Campbell said that one of the most valuable aspects of the program is the connections bridged between different generations.

“A lot of people in the area are elderly,” she said. “HANDS gives them a little bit of a vested interest in the new generation, to get rid of that generational gap. It gives them the opportunity to respect teens, and vice versa.”

It won’t be long before the snow begins to fall, and young hands can help to clear your sidewalk or driveway.

A program bringing youth and the elderly together in Constance Bay is helping teach teens how to lend a helping hand.

Hire A Neighbour’s Daughter or Son (HANDS) was created five years ago by the Constance & Buckham’s Bay Community Association.

“People on the board at the time discussed ways to get the youth off their idle butts, so to speak,” said program organizer Jo Ann Campbell.

HANDS is a brokerage between young people between the ages of 11 and 16 looking to make a little money, and community members looking for help with tasks around the house.

“Basically, we tap into any skills that the kids have or desire to learn – anything that they’re willing and able to do, and hopefully have a little bit of skill in,” said Campbell.

Jobs can include babysitting, snow removal, leaf raking, house cleaning, ditch digging, fence building, carpentry and dog walking.

Campbell said that one of the HANDS youth helped to remodel an entire cottage in the Bay this summer.

Acting as a liaison between employee and employer, Campbell collects the names of youth willing to participate and community members needing a little help. Most requests come from within Constance Bay, but nearby regions like MacLaren’s Landing also qualify.

You don’t have to be elderly to apply for HANDS help, but it’s a valuable program for seniors in the area, Campbell said.

“It’s a much more shut-in situation for them,” Campbell said of rural seniors compared to those in the city. “They can’t just jump on the bus, and there’s quite a distance between houses. It’s not like city blocks.”

This isolation also applies to youth, who can’t just walk down to the local mall to hang out with friends.

“We do have issues with vandalism around here, and unfortunately people point fingers at teenagers,” Campbell said.

“They have more time on their hands out here to go down troublesome paths.”

But HANDS helps to build connections within the community, and allows youth to get to know their neighbours.

“They’re far less likely to vandalize or hurt property if they know the person living there,” she said.

The fee per hour is decided by the employee, and once Campbell links up the worker and employee, her job is done.

A great way for youth to learn the value of money, the work also gives them something to add to their resume, solving the age old problem of how to get job experience when no one will hire you without it.

HANDS also helps kids to learn basic, everyday life skills that aren’t taught as readily anymore, as most of their time is taken up by technology.

Campbell said that she has also tweaked the registration process so that the youth’s parents are involved in the program as well. Campbell consults with both the

BECAUSE MY MOMMA SAID SO! A 14-year-old driver from West Carleton, yes 14, was summoned to provincial traffic Court after he lost control of his mother’s vehicle on Yucks Lane and crashed into a horse’s paddock.

Police were dispatched to the far reaches of rural west Ottawa early Saturday morning for a report of a single motor vehicle accident involving a young male driver.

Upon scanning the collision scene it quickly became apparent to the investigating officer that the large blue Chrysler sedan left the roadway, skidded across the front yard of a farm residence and crashed head-on into a wooden paddock.

Because of the sudden deceleration of the vehicle and the explosive deployment of the driver’s side airbag the boy sustained minor injuries to his face and upper extremities.

The boy told police that he was driving his parent’s vehicle back home when he lost control of it and ran off the road.

When the boy’s mother showed up at the accident scene, a short while time later, police discovered that she was aware that her son was driving without a licence and that she had given him permission to drive her vehicle along the back roads.

Fortunately, there weren’t any serious injuries or deaths in this irresponsible safety violation and hopefully, both mother and son learned some valuable lessons.

GOAT ON THE LAMB One Friday morning an OPP officer happened upon a traffic situation that caused him some concern—a goat and a lamb were walking down the middle of the roadway between OPP and OPS jurisdictions and were becoming a danger to both themselves and others.

Because the goat and the lamb were flirting with the fine jurisdictional lines of Lanark County and Ottawa the officer felt it was prudent to engage the Ottawa police officers in this rural round up.

DEER COLLISION COUNTER The deer collision counter continues to climb as expected. It’s week 46 and there is only seven weeks to go.

Sixteen more deer collisions were reported in the rural west regions of Ottawa with 10 being reported in West Carleton and six in Rideau-Goulbourn.

The count now stands at 135 to 79 in favor of Rideau-Goulbourn.

MISCHIEF Nov. 8: Thomas Elliot Road, Marshalls Bay: A barn off of Thomas Elliot Rd. had

reportedly been vandalized by unidentified culprits sometime between Oct. 31 and Nov. 7.

The Marshalls Bay Community Association stated that a total of four windows were smashed in with rocks but no access was made into the barn.

SUSPICIOUS • Nov. 6: Lady Lochead Lane, March Rural: Shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday a homeowner observed an unfamiliar black Volkswagon Jetta driving through her neighbourhood of Lady Lochead for no apparent reason and became somewhat concerned that the unidentified occupants were possibly casing the area for a theft or break and enter.

According to the homeowner, a similar incident occurred about a year ago where a driver was seen taking pictures of the neighbourhood.

Based on the licence plate number provided by the caller it was discovered that the same vehicle was involved in both suspicious incidents.

• Nov. 8: Thomas Elliot Road, Marshalls Bay: Sometime between Nov. 4-7, 40 boxes of approximately 600-1,000 books were dumped into a creek off of Thomas Elliot Rd. While out examining the book pile a Marshalls Bay CA member was approached by a man who identified himself as J.P. and claimed responsibility.

He explained that he had been cleaning out his warehouse at some unidentified site and asked two of his male workers to dispose of the unwanted books.

Apparently, the warehouse owner was shocked to see how his workers acted on his request to dispose of the books—especially since they weren’t given any direction on how to do it. The member provided police with the man’s description and the licence plate number of a vehicle.

Trash equals taxes

T

here will be an outcry in Ottawa as more residents become aware that their regular garbage will be picked up every other week starting in November 2012.

The change is coming because it saves money and will likely prompt more residents to recycle and compost waste, instead of dropping it into the regular garbage.

The biggest savings will be the potential delay in requiring a new landfill once the Trail Road dump is full. If we extend its lifespan by recycling, we save millions of dollars.The tax savings have been poorly communicated by municipalities, including the City of Ottawa.

Meanwhile, the backlash to trash pickup every 14 days may be so great that council has to reverse its decision, destroying its current cost and landfill estimates. Recycling and composting may be a good idea, but people like to take the easy way out.

Across Ontario, 55 per cent of waste that could be recycled ends up in landfills.

Ottawa estimates $535,000 in lost revenue went into the landfill because people throw recyclables into the garbage.

Either we do a better job of recycling or we

will have to accept more landfills. Judging by the public’s negative reaction to plans to expand the Carp Road landfill, the public doesn’t like new dumps.

The cost of creating another landfill is considerable, if you can even find a place willing to take our trash. And since a new dump probably wouldn’t work anywhere within city limits, we’d be forced to pay for our waste to be trucked away.

The value of Ottawa’s Trail Road landfill is $200 million. Every bit of time we can squeeze out of that resource equals millions of taxpayers dollars saved. On top of the cost, consider the environmental impact of sending diesel trucks to a distant dump and back, day after day for, well, pretty much forever, or until we build an even newer dump even farther away.

Last year, Ottawa residents combined to create 900 tonnes of waste in their homes each day.

That’s 360 kilograms of waste per person, per year.

Ontario ranks sixth among Canadian provinces when it comes to diverting waste from landfills. In the long run, can we afford to be anything but the front-runner?

Do we have to name everything after Sir John A.?

S

ir John A. Macdonald’s name is back in the news again. He would be happy about that, probably, although he might wonder why we don’t talk about something else occasionally.

Specifically, the idea of naming things after Sir John A. has resurfaced, the latest being the Ottawa River Parkway. Sir John A. was a great man and important to our city, so it doesn’t sound a like a bad idea until you think about it a bit.

You will remember a recent suggestion that Wellington Street be given Sir John A.’s name. That didn’t go far, because some tradition-minded people didn’t like the idea of playing games with history.

And other people admired the Ottawalike confusion of having a street that is called, depending upon where you are on it, Richmond Road, Wellington Street, Rideau Street or Montreal Road.

So Sir John A. struck out there. With no disrespect, he should strike out here too. True, the Ottawa River Parkway doesn’t have a long tradition, like Wellington Street. But it is named after something that is important in our history – namely, the Ottawa River.

And the other thing that nobody seems to mention is that Sir John A. has a ton of things named after him. Along with

CHARLES GORDON Funny Town Cartier, he has the airport, a big bridge and the road to Toronto. There is also a MacDonald-Cartier Academy in town.

How much more does he want?

There are other deserving politicians who don’t have streets named after them.

Think of R.B. Bennett, John Diefenbaker, not to mention The Right Hon. Sir Mackenzie Bowell. Lester Pearson is thought by some historians to have been Canada’s greatest prime minister, yet all he has is a building on Sussex Drive.

More recently, Jean Chrétien and Brian Mulroney each governed this country for a decade. They deserve a street, if we’re handing them out.

And, of course, we are. If you drive out into the suburbs and the rural part of the city, you will find all sorts of things – streets, schools, community centres – named after various councillors and

mayors of the past. So there’s no reason why more federal politicians should not get their due.

But it should not be confined to that.

Think of the Ottawans who have distinguished themselves in sports, in business, in humanitarian work, in the public service, in the arts. There is a precedent – Paul Anka Drive, Rich Little Drive.

Others deserve streets too. I’d like to see Norman Robertson Avenue, Frances Itani Street, Angela Hewitt Drive, Brian Kilrea Avenue.

If new streets are not being constructed fast enough – and you sort of hope they aren’t, given the implications for urban sprawl – then some of the streets named after trees could be renamed, or streets with those generic nature names, like Spruceview or Rosehill or Ivygrove or such.

Of course, all these names have their enthusiasts. Someone who has lived on Grassview Drive all his life may not like having it called Mulroney Boulevard and will squawk about it. That’s why these things are difficult.

But, leaving the Ottawa River Parkway as it is, we need to move quickly if we want some decent names on Ottawa streets. Because you know what the alternative is. Yes: selling naming rights

to the highest bidder.

That notion has also been in the news recently. Ottawa city council is considering a bid to sell naming rights for a recreation centre in Kanata to a property developer. That’s in line with a policy adopted in March to sell naming rights to city facilities, particularly sports complexes.

You know where that leads – Walmart Avenue, Google Drive, GlaxoSmithKline Street, Viagra Boulevard, Seagram Road.

The notion of letting the marketplace determine a city’s identity is not recommended, particularly if we want our city to reflect its history and traditions. Mind you, Seagram Road might appeal to Sir John A.

I have been to at least 10 countries in Europe, I’ve travelled Australia and I lived in Asia for three years.

Sometimes I was mistaken for an American, because I was speaking English.

Once I was told I wore my hair like a woman from France.

On more than one occasion my roots were showing, because I was thought to be an Irishwoman. I was always proud to identify myself as Canadian.

Everyone loves Canadians. And many people wish they were Canadian.

In my first posting in Asia, one of the other teachers actually posed as a Canadian because he felt he was accepted and treated better that way.

He travelled with the Canadian flag emblazoned on his jacket and backpack. He was actually from New York.

Part of the reason Canadians are loved so much, I think, is because we are so polite. It is in our nature to consider others, to follow the rules, and to put ourselves last.

Sometimes our law-abiding nature makes us the brunt of jokes. I remember being teased in Melbourne because I didn’t want to cross the street until the electronic sign said it was safe to go—even thought it was well past midnight and there wasn’t a vehicle in sight.

Well, if we are known the world over for being polite, we should live up to everyone’s expectations, shouldn’t we?

Lately some of my fellow countrymen

Here are some examples of particularly impolite and rather non-Canadian behaviour I have noticed in the past week: • Rushing the traffic circle. Just because you are heading straight down County Rd. 43 does not mean you have the right of way through the traffic circle.

That funny little upside-down triangle sign means yield; • If you are entering a gas station and you notice other vehicles waiting to enter the service bays, do not bolt ahead of them to take a spot.

They were there before you.

Just because you can steal the spot doesn’t mean you should.

This rule also applies to parking spots at Bayshore; • If you have a cart full of groceries and someone approaches with just a handful of items, you should let them go ahead of you.

It isn’t going to slow you down by much.

And you weren’t in that much of a hurry anyway; you had a cart full;

• If I am speaking to you, put your smart phone away.

You are supposed to be listening to me, not reading your emails and text messages.

• (This one really gets me) If there is even one person behind you in line for the cash, do not play your lottery tickets while everyone waits. More than once I have watched a line form while some petty gambler plays and wins, plays another and wins, plays another and wins, etc.

OK, I think five rants are enough for today. I will save the rest up for another time.

I don’t want to sound like a complainer.

Because along with self-deprecating humour and ripe sarcasm, complaining is another thing Canadians are supposedly known for.

Honestly, it’s the little things that count.

If you make a point to consider the people around you and to sacrifice a moment of your time for them, you will make the day better for at least two people and probably many more because that goodwill spreads quickly.

And what are you in such a rush for anyway?

More than once I have actually pulled over to let a tailgater pass, thinking to myself, I guess he’s late for his next car accident.

Oops, I guess that was another complaint.

Sometimes I just can’t help myself. Have a great week and remember: I’m watching you on the traffic circle.

Bullying ‘not cool’ say St. Isidore, All Saints students JESSICA CUNHA jessica.cunha@metroland.com

“That’s not cool!”

That was the message delivered by students from All Saints Catholic High School to those attending St. Isidore Catholic Elementary School during a bullying awareness event on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The presentation was part of the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre’s (WOCRC) second annual bully awareness week, which ran from Nov. 14 to 18, in 10 different schools in the West Carleton, Kanata and Goulbourn area.

Drama and peer helper students from All Saints presented a half-hour worth of skits and a presentation on why bullying isn’t acceptable to the elementary children.

“We wanted to share a very important message about bullying awareness with you,” said All Saints teacher Oriana Laderoute to the assembly.

All Saints drama students Shayne Cowan-Chollette and Matt Brooks narrated the skits, which included different forms of bullying – calling people names, cyber bullying, excluding others and physical bully-

ing – and showed the elementary students better ways to deal with bullies.

“Bullying is when you say mean words,” said Shayne. “Cyber bullying is when you go online and spread rumours…excluding people from groups or activities.”

In one skit, a student was called “retarded” for showing off a new Spiderman comic book.

Another student then called out the bully, telling her it was mean to use words like that. The student apologized.

“What do we say when we see a bully?” asked Shayne and Matt.

“That’s not cool!” yelled back the elementary students.

Seven-year-old Alora Chabot, in Grade 2 at St. Isidore, said it’s not OK to bully other people.

“Tell the bully to stop,” she said. “Tell the target to walk away and tell the teacher.”

Peer helpers from All Saints presented the school’s bully prevention program and options when dealing with bullies.

“You need to stay safe,” said one high school student.

“Tell someone,” said another student.

“Keep telling until it stops…don’t give up.”

Drama students from All Saints Catholic High School acted out scenarios where someone gets bullied and then offered tips on dealing with bullies.

Most mammals grow a thick tangle of insulating underfur, equivalent to our thermal underwear, under the luxuriant coat of guard hairs.

Down feathers fulfil the same role in birds. The winter coats of Snowshoe Hares provide warmth in a second way.

They are white, which for many years was thought solely to serve as camouflage.

However, that colour actually helps keep hares warmer. When colour-giving pigments are absent from hairs and feathers, the vacuoles that housed them are empty, and contain air.

Just as double-pane windows trap insulating air and help houses retain heat, empty vacuoles in hairs and feathers help keep an animal’s body heat from escaping.

Warmth is the primary reason that most northern animals including Arctic fox, rock ptarmigan, snowy owls, and polar bears are white, at least in winter.

In addition to growing a heavier coat, many animals gain weight another way.

Under the skin, a thick layer of white adipose tissue (fat) is stored. For mammals, this acts as another layer of insulation.

For birds, the fat is fuel that powers their powerful pectoralis flight muscles, which switch into shivering mode at night to generate heat.

Nature’s Way black bears not only help keep them warm during winter but also provide them with essential nutrition after they leave their winter dens in spring.

Many bears lose weight right up until July when insects, fruit, and other fatrich foods finally become available.

It may sound strange but two large local animals actually lose some of weight prior to the arrival of the heart of winter. male white-tailed deer and moose will soon be shedding their antlers.

The weight reduction can be significant: a Moose’s rack can weigh more than 30 kilograms.

The shedding of antlers reveals that those structures are important only for the mating season. Antlers serve to impress females and intimidate rival males.

After that need is gone, the large and heavy structures are only excess baggage, weight best left behind when winter stress arises.

Antlers are extensions of the skull’s frontal bones. W hen they finish growing in late summer, antlers are dead structures whose growth starts anew the following spring when plentiful resources are available. T he mighty racks of moose, grown in a mere four months, contain the fastest growing bone tissue in the world!

Incidentally, shed antlers are not easy to find because mice, squirrels, porcupines, and other rodents chew them for their calcium content.

Bob Beacock ignores the overpowering stench as he walks into a pile of sticky, torn garbage bags dumped on top of one of Ontario’s heaping landfill sites.

Dozens of seagulls snap up morsels of trash as Beacock unearths an umbrella, electrical wires, a plastic canola oil container and a 20-litre plastic pail.

He scoops up a battery with his shovel.

“There’s a real no-no,” says the Brock Township landfill operator. “I don’t know how many times we tell the public. There’s one thing I hate seeing in a landfill is any battery.”

These items could have been diverted through one of Ontario’s provincewide waste diversion programs. But they ended up here.

Programs like the blue box may have lulled Ontarians into believing they’re doing all they can to help the environment and reduce waste. But Trash Troubles — a Metroland special report — shows we aren’t being as diligent as we think.

Provincewide, 55 per cent of garbage that could be recycled ends up in landfills instead. As a result, landfills are filling up fast and we are on the brink of a waste disposal crisis, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) says.

“Our garbage continues to outstrip available landfill space,” said AMO’s president Gary McNamara. “We must either reduce our waste and recycle more waste, or accept new landfills or incinerators in our communities.”

Government established ambitious waste diversion targets during the last decade, but today, more than half of the 5 million tonnes of waste picked up at Ontario curbsides annually gets dumped instead of recycled or reused. That 2.7 million tonnes of waste that could have been diverted is equivalent to the weight of 6,222 Boeing 747 jets.

For example, three-quarters of plastics that should be recycled end up in landfills instead.

And even though organics make up about one-third of the province’s waste, only 40 per cent of Ontarians have access to a curbside green bin program.

Ottawa’s green bin program

was launched in January 2010, although it only served single homes initially. Over the past two years the city has slowly introduced the program to other dwellings, including some walkup apartments. A number of public and Catholic schools also participate, and the city plans to incorporate more townhomes, apartments and condos in the future.

The city’s green bin program accepts food scraps, soiled paper products such as napkins, cardboard, and muffin wrappers, yard waste, kitty litter, animal bedding and vacuum bag contents. Unlike some programs in the greater Toronto area, Ottawa’s green bin program does not accept plastic bags, dog feces or diapers.

Residents pay approximately $26 per year for the service through a city-wide tax levy.

Currently, the green bin is collected weekly from April to November, and bi-weekly from December to March. Beginning late 2012, however, weekly green bin pick-up will commence year round and garbage collection will be reduced to every second week. This controversial change was approved by Ottawa city council in April 2011 in an effort to extend the lifetime of the city’s Trail Road Waste Facility landfill in Ottawa South.

More than $320 million was spent on waste diversion in Ontario last year, through programs funded by industry, municipalities and the province. Consumers also pay through eco fees on certain products.

Ontario towns and cities have barely made a dent in the truckloads of plastic bottles, pop cans, magazines, milk cartons and other household garbage that still end up in dumps.

A 2010 report by Ontario’s auditor general ranked the province sixth in Canada by wastediversion rate, behind Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, British Columbia and Quebec and well behind most European countries.

“There’s a good portion of the population who are very devout, who take a lot of time and sort,” Beacock said at the Brock Township site, northeast of Toronto.

“The rest of them do nothing.

It’s just all wham bam in a bag and out to the curb.”

Even green bin waste is a problem. York is sending some

of its organics to Massachusetts because its Ontario contractor cannot handle the region’s full volume.

“As long as you have got this escape valve of (sending it south), no one is going to take this issue seriously,” said Municipal Waste Association spokesperson Ben Bennett.

Municipalities are trying to send less to landfills but are falling short of official targets.

The auditor general says waste diversion rates are lagging because: Municipalities with enough landfill space are unlikely to reduce curbside pickups and impose garbage bag limits.

Municipalities have to compete with each other and the private sector to sell their recyclable and compostable materials.

Municipalities say the nearly $80 million provided by industry for their share of the $160-million-a-year blue box program is not enough.

Even the types of materials collected in residential blue bin programs differ by municipality.

While one may accept aluminum foil, trays and take out containers, another may only take one of these materials or refuse it all.

“You go to your neighbouring municipality and it’s different.

It’s very frustrating for residents,” said Trevor Barton, Peel Region’s waste management planning supervisor.

Each municipality has to be able to find a market or a solution for the recyclable materials it collects, said Lucy Robinson of the Recycling Council of Ontario.

“If there is an inherent value

in a product or material, somebody is going to want to use it and therefore, there will be a recycling opportunity.”

Ontario households trashed 176,500 tonnes of plastics, 116,000 tonnes of printed paper and 122,000 tonnes of paper packaging in 2009, according to a report

by Stewardship Ontario, the industry-funded organization for the blue box program.

The auditor general says the result is that one in five municipalities report they don’t have enough space to dump their residential garbage.

Ottawa’s blue box program accepts glass bottles and jars, metal cans, aluminum cans and foil, empty paint and aerosol cans, and spiral wound canisters such as frozen juice cans.

As for plastics, the blue box accepts plastics numbered one through seven, including the recent addition of clamshell containers like those that hold produce, eggs or baked goods.

Single-serve yogurt containers have also been added to the list, as have plastic pails, flower pots and planting trays.

Film plastic such as grocery bags and food wrap, hard plastics such as toys or dishes, and any Styrofoam materials are not accepted.

It also takes some cardboard containers including milk and juice cartons, Tetra Pak packaging, and juice and soup boxes.

Most cardboard goes into the city’s black box program, however, which accepts newspapers and flyers, magazines, corrugated cardboard, cracker and cereal boxes, telephone books, writing and computer paper, books, paper towel and toilet paper rolls,

egg cartons, gift wrap and cards, paper shopping bags and packaging, frozen dinner boxes, shoe boxes and laundry detergent boxes.

Not many landfills are being built since it’s a long, complicated ordeal to get ministry approval.

Lafleche Environmental Inc. in Moose Creek, near Ottawa, was the last new landfill approved in 1999 in Ontario, the ministry of the environment said.

With landfills tough to build, there is a push to keep waste out, spawning provincewide stewardship programs. Experts also say government needs to push producers to design more recyclable and reusable products, also known as extended producer responsibility.

AMO recently ran ads saying consumers and producers of waste should be funding recycling programs so property taxpayers are not left footing the bill.

“A senior on a fixed income who doesn’t drive, own an iPad or a big flat screen TV shouldn’t have to pay for the high disposal costs of other people’s tires, smart phones and computers through her property taxes,” said McNamara.

Along with industry involvement, waste management officials and experts say residents need to watch what they are throwing out.

“They would just rather throw it in a bag and get rid of it and throw it in a landfill,” said Peterborough’s waste management co-ordinator Craig Simmons.

“They just think there’s an unlimited area where that material can go.”

Music blared and children’s laughter filled the halls of St. Michael’s Catholic School in Corkery on Nov. 17 as students rocked out to raise money.

The school’s annual danceathon raises funds for an orphanage in India, and students dance their way to success by raising pledges from friends and family members.

Principal Roberto Santos initiated the event when he arrived at the school five years ago, spreading the word about local bus driver Anita Hallas and her husband Hank who spend three months of their year in India, helping to take care of orphaned children in Asia as part of their business called Elijah Ministries.

“They are such an amazing couple,” Santos said. “We’re so pleased to help support them.”

Last year, the school raised $2,300 that went directly to the cause, with no middleman taking a percentage of the funds. This year, they’ve raised over $2,200 so far.

St. Mike’s used to collect McDonald’s kid’s meal toys to ship overseas, but the transportation costs cut too deeply into the money raised, and now they just send money instead.

“This way, we know that every dollar goes towards schools, uniforms, health care and education,” Santos said.

Basememt fire causes damages but no injuries reported COURTNEY SYMONS Courtney.symons@metroland.com

A house fire that broke out on Carp Road on Saturday, Nov. 19 was extinguished before caus-

ing any injuries or extensive damage.

People within the detached home at 4200 Carp Rd. called 911 just past 10 p.m. reporting smoke coming from downstairs.

The blaze began within a wood burning stove in the basement, and spread underneath the floors, into the walls and onto the ceiling.

Around 25 people who were within the home at the time evacuated and waited outside for Ottawa fire services.

“They (firefighters) did an expansive overhaul and man-

time,” he said. “The crews managed to ventilate the house before too much damage was done.”

The home is located between Thomas A. Dolan Pkwy. and Craig Side Rd. The blaze was one of many in the region over the weekend, including fires near St. Laurent, Trim Road, Vanier and Stittsville.

When there is a snowfall of seven centimeters or more forecast

Vehicles parked on the street when a restriction is in effect will be ticketed, even if it doesn’t snow, said Wilkinson. The regulations ensure snowplows are able to keep the roads clear of snow and safe for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

A local fundraising committee for the West Carleton branches of the Ottawa Public Library received the library’s Order of Friendship Award at a ceremony on Nov. 14.

The Diefenbooker Steering Committee was honoured for their 15 years of volunteer work and fundraising over $150,000 for the Carp, Constance Bay and Fitzroy Harbour branches of the public library.

In 1996, a group of volunteers banded together to raise money for the library, including the move of the Carp branch from Memorial Hall to its current location next to the Diefenbunker Museum on Carp Road.

“These are people that care about having a strong library in their community,” Carp librarian Lori Fielding said.

The committee created the Diefenbooker Classic event, beginning as a five- or 10-kilometre race and expanding to include a 15- or 40-kilometre bike race.

“It’s the only race in the world that goes through the Diefenbunker underground tunnels,” said Fielding, who nominated the committee for the Order of

The Diefenbooker Classic event hit its 15th year this spring, with nine different bike, walking and running events for community members to participate in.

Friendship Award Over the Diefenbooker Classic’s 15-year career, it has expanded from involving 250 participants and raising $4,000 in its first year, to over 500 people and $11,000 this spring.

This year’s event was held on April 30 and included nine dif-

ferent races – three runs, three bike routes, a walk, a youth run for those under 12, and a Loonie Loop for kids as young as two.

Funds donated to the West Carleton library branches have been used to pay for things like author’s book readings, new signage, and transportation for students to visit the library.

“It’s a fantastic community event,” Fielding said of the Diefenbooker Classic. “A lot of the volunteers are athletes that participate in other races around the city, but it’s nice to have one in your own community.

The library is so proud to be associated with it.”

The Diefenbooker Steering Committee received the award at the Ottawa Public Library’s board meeting on Nov. 14, where board member and Barrhaven Coun. Jan Harder presented them with the award and West Carleton-March Coun. Eli ElChantiry spoke a few words.

El-Chantiry said that the award couldn’t be more deserved, and that he has seen the success of the Diefenbooker Classic increase over the years.

“Every year we get more and more people,” he said, adding that for the past few years he

has been in attendance to kick off the event.

“They’re usually nice to me, they don’t ask me to run,” he joked.

El-Chantiry said that last year when a big wind storm knocked branches and trees onto the road right before the event, the

WESTERN OTTAWA COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTRE On Dec. 6, 1989, a man shot and killed 14women at Ecole Polytechnique because he claimed he “hated feminists”.

That horrific event brought violence against women into the spotlight and was a wake-up call to action; it became everyone’s issue, everybody’s responsibility to end violence against women.

Dec. 6 has become the date commemorated as the national day of remembrance and action on violence against women.

Vigils are held every year in December across Canada to remember the 14 women who died, as well as all women who have fallen due to senseless acts of violence.

Since that tragic day, the call to action has resulted in some change.

The public is invited to join the vigil on Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 5:15 pm, at the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre located at 2 MacNeil Crt. in Kanata.

We will be hosting an outdoor candlelight ceremony, followed by an indoor reception, to honour and remember the 14 women massacred at École Polytechnique as well as all women who have fallen due to acts of violence.

Please come out and show our community that these women will not be forgotten.

Local councillors and Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson have been invited to attend.

Norma Dixon is a poet, painter, photographer, tap dancer and metal worker – an artist in every sense of the word.

The 85-year-old was born in Ottawa on Carling Avenue in 1926 and took art lessons in the Glebe beginning when she was 18 years old.

It wasn’t until 1986 that she moved to Fitzroy Harbour with her husband Doug, but she quickly became the Harbour’s resident poet.

If her name is familiar, it’s likely because you’ve read her monthly poem featured in the Fitzroy Harbour’s Peeper newsletter, or perhaps you’ve witnessed her artwork at the Carp fair.

Just this year, she won first prize in the watercolour category for her work titled “March Winds”, depicting a wintery home with a laundry line blowing in the breeze.

“Watercolour is quite difficult because you’ve got to leave the whites white,” she said from her retirement residence in Arnprior. “Once you paint over it, you can’t go back.”

Dixon’s husband passed away in 2008, and she decided to put her Fitzroy Harbour home on the market to move someplace smaller.

But she’ll always remember her home there, and the artist’s studio that Doug built just for her.

“He knew I’d always wanted a studio,”

she said. “It had electric heating, and a door to the outside. It was wonderful.”

Although she has left her studio behind, her art has stayed with her. Splashes of her talent are all around her room in the Arnprior Villa retirement residence – a watercolour here, a pencil sketch there, an award from the International Society of Poets sitting atop a shelf.

“This is a real artist’s room,” she said with a laugh, poking fun at her artfully cluttered living space.

In 2009, Dixon compiled documents, poems and letters to create a self-published memoir titled “From Grandma’s House and Beyond: The Life of Norma Dixon”.

In it, she describes her Ottawa upbringing, her first marriage to a man who died of a heart attack when she was in her 30s, and the love of her life that she met six years later – Doug – who she speaks of often, fondly, and always with a smile.

On the back cover of the book is a photo of Dixon in New York at age 20.

“Pretty good eh?” she said. “I used to have a pretty good pair of legs. Doug always said that they still don’t have a mark on them.”

The book also outlines Dixon’s various experiences as an artist. Her work is featured in the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in the Valley Room; a piece she donated called “Slam Dunk!”, which depicts a young boy splashing around on the beach.

Artists’ pieces showcased at library POET, from 20 Arnprior’s library showcases one of her watercolours of roses. And her poems can be found everywhere – every month in the Fitzroy Peeper, as well as at various birthday, anniversary and charity events for which she is asked to write a poem.

While writing comes most naturally to Dixon, she adores creating art.

“I’m a drawer,” she said. “I say to kids that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to be an artist, just grab a pencil, a piece of paper and an eraser. That’s all you need.”

She gave out this advice as an art teacher, providing lessons to students in Ottawa for years before transferring her skills to Fitzroy Harbour when she moved.

Dixon taught around 20 students at a time at Carlingwood Mall’s Kiwanis Club. In Fitzroy Harbour, children from St. Michael’s Catholic School would often come over to her house after school for a lesson.

A few years ago, she hosted an outdoors artist’s session in Algonquin Park to eight students willing to learn. The promoter of the event told Dixon he wouldn’t charge her for his services – as long as she would give him lessons too.

Throughout her career as an artist, Dixon has made time to be a mother and grandmother. Her two children are both from her first marriage; Suzanne Olsheskie (her married name), and Peter Wintonick who won the Governor General’s Award in visual and media arts in 2006 for

his work as a filmmaker.

Dixon’s children and grandchildren frequently visit her in her new home, and she is also tech-savvy enough to keep in touch over the internet.

“Only one other person around here has a computer,” Dixon said, “and that’s the reverend. I’ve been online for 10 years.

I still type 105 words per minute.”

Even as the years pass by, Dixon’s memories remain fresh in her mind.

“I have a very good memory,” she said.

“I can go back until I was about three and a half years old.”

Perhaps the most carefully preserved memories are of her late husband Doug.

“He always took an interest in what I was doing,” she said. “He was always saying, ‘I’ll never be as smart as Norma,’ and I would say, ‘Are you kidding? You’ve got us all beat.’”

Dixon remains an active artist, writing a monthly poem for Adam Brown, editor of the Fitzroy Peeper, and recently accepting a commission to paint a portrait.

“You see?” she said she held up the piece in progress. “I try not to draw a whole row of teeth. They just always look too artificial.”

Ever the teacher, and creative expressionist – her tap shoes still sit in her closet, and she brought them out recently to put on a show for her fellow residents at the Arnprior Villa.

Fitzroy Harbour’s poet will continue to tap dance her way through life, leaving behind bits of her creative genius as she goes.

Hockey fans in the Ottawa area will get a special Christmas treat this year when some of the top junior players from Ontario and Quebec descend on the Smiths Falls Memorial Community Centre for the first-ever Central Canada All-Star Challenge from Dec. 27 to 29.

The event, hosted by the Central Canada Hockey League, will feature eight teams made up of players from the Yzerman and Robinson divisions of the CCHL, the East, South, North and West divisions of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, as well as a team from both the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League and the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

The tournament will see the eight teams split into two pools of four, which will play round-robin games on Dec. 27 and 28, featuring games consisting of two 20-minute halves. The top two teams from

each pool will take part in the semifinals on Dec. 29, with the winners playing for the championship later in the day.

Rosters will be announced in early December.

For the CCHL teams, they will be the same squads as those that take part in the league All-Star game on Dec. 26.

Sheldon Keefe of the Pembroke Lumber Kings and Peter Goulet of the Nepean Raiders will coach the Yzerman Division team while Ian MacInnis of the Cornwall Colts and Jason Clark of the Carleton Place Canadians will be in charge of the Robinson Division squad.

The coaches will select their respective teams, and each club in the league must be represented.

The semi-annual Red Trillium Studio Tour returns to West Carleton this Nov. 26-27 with 15 studios exhibiting 41 artists along the way.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, participants can take themselves on a self-guided tour to the various studios throughout West Carleton to take in the art and culture of the area.

“Every studio is different,” said organizer Catharine Nutt.

“Every stop has a variety of amazing artwork in different mediums.”

Exhibited work will include bookbinding, photography, glassblowing, stained glass, various paintings, woodworking, jewelry, weaving, traditional Ukrainian painted eggs, teddy bears and dolls.

The studio tour began 13 years ago when a group of local artists decided they wanted to make their studios more accessible to the public.

Beginning with seven studios and 12 artists, the number of studios has doubled and the artists have more than tripled since then.

This fall’s tour will feature eight new artists and five returning participants who have taken a few years off but are coming back, Nutt said.

Participants can pick up a passport at their first stop and collect a stamp for every studio visited. For each five studios, they are given a ballot for a draw to win a $100 gift certificate to use for any of the featured artists.

Nutt is offering up her own home studio to showcase her work, adding that although the show doesn’t have a Christmas theme, her house will be decorated regardless.

“I’m the Santa lady,” she said.

“I tend to decorate more than anyone else.”

Fitting, considering she handsculpts one-of-a-kind Santas year-round. People often purchase her work as wedding or birthday gifts during non-Christmassy months, Nutt said.

All studios must be within West Carleton, but artists are invited from all over to participate in the event.

This tour will feature an artist from Kingston, two from Winchester and quite a few from other regions in Ottawa.

As for why the tour is called Red Trillium, Nutt said that the white trillium is the flower of Ontario, but the red is the more rare form of the provincial mascot.

“It symbolizes the rare work that they will see on our tour,” she said.

A brochure outlining the locations of the participating studios is available online, and participants can visit one or all 15 of the studios. Children are welcome to attend, as long as they ask before touching any of the artwork.

Nutt said that a tour like this is a great way for artists to display their work, but also for the public to learn more about and meet local artists in the area.

Unlike at other studio tours, every artist will be present alongside their art.

“Artists have so few venues to showcase their work,” she said.

“So it’s a really good opportunity to show off.”

All featured art is juried, meaning it is judged by a board of seven artists to ensure that only the highest quality of artwork is displayed.

April 11, 1956 – November 15, 2011

It is with heavy hearts and much sadness that we announce the passing of our sister Nancy Louise Cleary (nee Couvieau). On Tuesday, November 15, 2011 Nancy passed away peacefully with her family by her side, escorted by many angels to be with her Lord at the young age of 55 years.

Nancy will be remembered forever and always by the love of her life Rodger, her girls Aaron (Marc), Lisa (Peter), and Kerri-Anne, her Dad John Couvieau Sr., her brothers Johnny (Carilyn) and Jeff (Maxine), her sisters Theresa (Andy), Carly (the late Kenny), and Leah (Roger). Predeceased by her Mom, Lea in 2006.

Nancy will be sorely missed by her brother-in-law John Cleary and family. She was the most respected daughterin-law to the late Dave and Esther Cleary.

Our Nancy was an awesome Aunt to many. She was a devoted and dedicated pal to her childhood friend of 44 years, Brenda McLean – their bond was golden. Susan and Trevor Porteous also shared a forever friendship that was stitched with threads of gold and wrapped in love and laughter.

Nancy soldiered through her disease with courage and the hope of fulfilling a dream. That dream came true on October 8, 2011 when she along with her husband Rodger walked their daughter Lisa, down the aisle. She shone brighter than the sun itself.

Nancy’s signature was her infectious smile and arms always ready to embrace you with a great big hug. As an added bonus if you were someone very special - and many fell under that umbrella – you would have a great big puckerpowered kiss planted on your cheek – that was our “pick” (childhood nickname).

“To put the needs and desires of another person above your own is love in its purest form.” That dear friends, was our Nancy.

Nancy Louise, our special angel, you will be forever in our thoughts and always in our hearts. We love you and will miss you like crazy.

We would like to thank all who attended the visitation and funeral. The many friends, relative, neighbours and coworkers who sent flower, cards, letters of condolences, food and contributions to the Cancer Society in Nancy’s memory.

The Alan R. Barker Funeral Home for their professionalism, the nurses and doctors in the Oncology Unit of the Ottawa Hospital General Campus, for their kindness, care and compassion during Nancy’s short stay. Last but not least Father Lindsay and Father Pierre. Your thoughtfulness meant so much to us in our time of grief.

Raymond Joseph “Ray” Fridgen of Arnprior at the age of 86 years. Beloved husband of Blanche (nee Robillard). Dearly loved father of Donald (Nina) of Peterborough; Dennis (Pat) of Renfrew; David (Sue) of Arnprior; Dale Pepin (Jeff) of Renfrew; Danny (Kara) of Troy, N.Y.; Darcy (Cathy) of Arnprior and Darin (Debbie Schwarzkopf) ofTampa, Florida. Special “Dad” of Sharon Chaput (Durell) of Westmeath. Dear brother of Bill Fridgen (late Mary) of Iroquois, Ontario; Martha Geisinger (late Paul) and Millie Shyba (late Jack), both of Calgary. Predeceased by a brother, Joey and 2 sisters: Thelma Fox (late Joe) and Violet Risling. Ray is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Family and friends were invited to the Pilon Family Funeral Home, 50 John Street North, Arnprior for visitation on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. A Funeral Mass was celebrated in St. John Chrysostom Church, Arnprior on Tuesday morning, November 22nd at 11 o’clock. Interment Malloch Road Cemetery, Arnprior. In memory of Ray, a donation to the Alzheimer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by his family. Knights of Columbus will assemble at the funeral home for prayers on Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. Legion tribute will take place on Monday evening at 6:45 p.m.

Daughter of the late Frank and Hilda (Graham) Levi. Dear sister of Doreen Peck of Barrie Ontario and Ed Levi of Rimbey, Alberta. Bernice was the former wife of the late Bert More. Predeceased by her brothers Ivan, Boyd and Wayne Levi, brothers-in-law Ken Peck, Laurie More and sister-in-law Edith Levi. Bernice is also survived by sisters-in-law, Jean Levi of Arnprior, Barbara Levi of Brampton, Bonnie JoyLevi of Alberta, Anne More Levi Bourgoin and Doreen (Russ) Saunders of Ottawa, brothers in law Logan (Jean) More and John (Ruth) More of Almonte. “Auntie Bun” is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

She was a wonderful lady that we loved and admired and she will be sadly missed.

Rested at The Boyce Funeral Home, Chapel, Visitation and Reception Centre, 138 Daniel Street N., Arnprior where friends paid their respects on Monday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was held in The Boyce Chapel Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. Cremation and interment at Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte at later date. A luncheon followed in The Boyce Reception Centre after the funeral service.

Dear daughter of the late Edgar Manuel and the late Clara Ball. Beloved wife of the late Gerald Evans. Dearly loved mother of Deborah David (Brian) and Barry Evans (Joyce), both of Arnprior; Stacy Evans (Juanita) of Northern Arm, Nfld. and Rodney Evans of Orangeville.

Cherished grandmother of 9 and great-grandmother of 3.

Also survived by 4 brothers: John, Channon, Winston and Chesley as well as 4 sisters: Viola, Joan, Pauline and Irene. Predeceased by brothers: Wallace, Harry and Franklin and a sister, Phyllis. Funeral service will be conducted in Botwood, Newfoundland.

Peacefully at Centre d’Hebergement de L’Assomption in L’Assomption, Quebec on Monday October 31, 2011, in her 68th year. Dear daughter of the late Ron and Milly Lake. Loving mother of Stephane, Linda, Vincent, Eric, Miriam, and several grandchildren.

Will be sadly missed by her brother Douglas and his wife Margaret.

We deeply appreciate the care and compassion shown to Veronica by staff and friends at L’Assomption.

They encouraged Veronica’s renewed interest in painting and drawing, resulting in one of her paintings being used as Centre d’Hebergement de L’Assomption’s 2008 Christmas Card.

Dear son of the late Art and Gert Grenier. Beloved and devoted husband and soulmate of Cheryl “Cherie” (nee Meek). Dearly loved father and mentor of Ken Grenier (Kim) of Arnprior and Anne-Marie Hansen (Stefan) of Charlottetown, P.E.I. Adored and proud “PopPop” of Shawn. Dear brother of Carole Grenier of Arnprior. Also survived by his mother-in-law, Joan Meek (late Adam) of Winchester as well as the entire Meek family. Don will be long remembered for his love of nature and the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, woodworking and wildlife were but a few of the passions that Donnie enjoyed. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Poor Cora was abandoned by her owners - left behind in an empty house when they moved. The three-year-old spayed female is a wonderful cat with a sweet disposition. She is quiet and can be shy in new situations. Affectionate and friendly, Cora gets along well with other cats. Cora will make a great companion for her new home.

This sweet, senior dog would like to find his retirement home. Ralph is a nine-year-old neutered Lab mix who was abandoned near the shelter. He is a very sweet, senior dog who listens well and walks well on a leash. Ralph is good with other dogs and ignores cats. Ralph will make an excellent companion for his new home.

Supplies the shelter needs: bleach, paper towels, cat treats, fabric softener sheets and liquid laundry soap.
