Enjoy a Lavish Life

We met up with Paul Whitehouse and Dawn Lake, who recently opened Lavish Life in the Westbourne Arcade. We started by asking Paul what Lavish Life was all about, “We are Bournemouth's first coffee 'art house' in the true sense of the meaning. We only sell freshly ground Italian coffee with soya, skinny and tall options all available. We also have exotic teas and delicious hot chocolate. This is mixed with local and interesting art of all types, paintings, prints, canvasses, photographs, bronzes, candles and objects d'art. If you are after something interesting and different then this is the place for you!” Both Paul and Dawn are experienced in different aspects of the interiors trade and have come together to produce a delightful shop, full of interesting hard to find items and colourful and varied art. Lavish Life includes seating inside the store and tables in the arcade itself. We can vouch that the coffee is some of the best available in the area and goes extremely well with the locally made cakes and pastries on offer. Artists on display currently include Rozanne Bell and Nigel Cook among many others. The ever changing pieces on display in store are varied with styles to suit everyone and you’ll find many gift ideas that are exclusive to Lavish Life. One of the most eye-catching being unique candles with embedded coloured glass in either blue, amethyst or green with new colours to follow. With a full calendar of events, exhibitions and ever changing stock, 2013 is looking like it’s going to a very lavish year!

The Libertine Dinner Review

At The Libertine you’ll find an extensive bar, a choice of seating areas including snug and cosy corners plus, most importantly, fantastic offerings from the food and drink menus. We visited the Libertine for dinner and after being seated in the raised area in the restaurant, our waiter Jack brought over the menus. The wine list is comprehensive and bottles start at £14.50. With a fair idea of what we were going to eat, we picked the Tierra Antica Cabernet Sauvignon. A fruity, mid weight, red and a stylish example of a Chilean wine. Our starters were pork & bacon pâté and chilli crab cakes. The pâté was delicious served with ciabatta and spiced apple chutney. The larger than expected crab & chilli cake came with avocado salsa and spiced yoghurt. A large diagram on one wall of The Libertine leaves no surprise as to their speciality. Steak! Their steaks are dry aged for 28 days, cooked in a special charcoal oven, designed to keep the natural moisture and flavour of the meat. We went for a classic cut, the 8oz fillet steak. The meat was served exactly as ordered complete with the most exquisite charcoally flavour and markings. All steaks come with two sides included. Sweet potato fries and poppy seed onion rings were generous in portion and made for an attractive plate. For the other main we went for whole baby chicken. Moist and well cooked, it came on a bed of roasted root vegetables, with herb roasted new potatoes and curly kale. Very filling. Despite being rather full already, sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream and chocolate & chilli praline torte with vanilla cream tempted. Both wowed us with the quality of ingredients, finish and generosity of portion size. Yes, yes, the diet starts tomorrow. The full three course meal for 2 came in at £64.75 plus wine at £17 for the bottle. This puts The Libertine at the higher end of the restaurant spend but from our experience it’s worth it. Lovely surroundings, friendly but not intrusive service, a quality menu with seasonal variety and that kind of satisfied, full feeling that only comes from a great dinner out. As the spring months approach we encourage you to try The Libertine and be sure to visit our favourite space, "The Forge", an outside eating area full of character with a real fire.

‘Angel’ Janet makes a real difference Domestic Angels celebrates a decade of caring and cleaning

Customers and staff have been quick to pay tribute to Domestic Angels, the Bournemouth based home help service, as it celebrates its tenth anniversary. “I am a long term cancer patient and on top of the gradual deterioration of everything else in the last few months, it has got so that I’m no longer able to do the housework,” says Zena Keyworth from Southbourne. “Janet, our Angel, is always so friendly and pleasant and does such a good job for us - it makes a real difference to our lives. Janet is like one of the family - she is more of a carer than a cleaner.” Philippa Davis from Canford Cliffs added “It’s extremely professional, reliable and nothing is too much trouble and being a locally conceived and grown business, I think is very important.” Samantha Acton, who started Domestic Angels in 2002, told us what the company’s services mean to her customers. “I always wanted us to provide more than what we actually do. I’d like to thank Janet and all our Angels who have embraced the philosophy that people come first and their needs cannot be boiled down into 15-minute time slots.”

Don’t listen to gossip, come see for yourself discover the Argyll Bowling Club

Argyll Bowling Club has been a part of Westbourne since it was founded in 1905 and is still around today, yet surprisingly there are many local residents who don't even know it exists! Perhaps this is because the club is located on the West cliff Overdrive and many people just park their cars and go down to the beach not realising there is a bowling club there at all. We spoke to Sylvia Nagarkar who told us more, “You would be hard pressed to find a bowling club in such a prime location where the views alone are some of the best on the south coast. The sub-tropical gardens of Alum Chine are just across the road from the club with pathways leading to the sandy beaches. A truly ideal location. We are very fortunate to have two bowling greens and can accommodate league matches and friendly games throughout the bowling season.” There is a public cafe serving meals, snacks, drinks and ice creams. As a bonus, they also have a licensed bar which is open during normal licensing hours. Sylvia told us more about a drive to encourage new members, “We will be having Open Days on Sunday 5th May and Sunday 9th June, when anyone can come along and have a go at playing bowls for FREE. We will supply the bowls and shoes plus any guidance and instruction. We welcome people of all ages. This will be an ideal opportunity for you to come along and have a go or just pop in for a tea, coffee and a chat with our members. If you like it, you may even want to join the club. If you are already an experienced bowler, you will be even more welcome!”

Stella’s Experience of Bowen

Mob . will vary ith Check w vider your pro

I am an experienced Bowen practitioner with a background in Nursing and delighted to share a testimonial from one of my female clients: "After years of struggling with a diagnosed frozen shoulder, which physio and steroids had not been able to resolve, a colleague, who's mother had experienced similar symptoms and who had found relief from the Bowen technique, convinced me I had little to lose. I was advised that the chronic nature of the condition and the addition of the steroid treatment, meant my body could take longer to heal. Over a period of several weeks, the pain and immobility of the shoulder continued to decrease, to the extent I was able to resume my swimming activities and carry my young granddaughter - what joy! I continue to have Bowen at regular intervals. I highly recommend this fascinating technique. Stella, Dorset.

What’s On at The Riviera? We met up with Silva Bala from The Riviera in Alum Chine to find out what’s new at the popular local hotel. Silva started by telling us about some exciting events lined up, ”We have several events coming up at the Riviera. We are currently getting ready for a lovely Mothers Day lunch on the Sunday 10th March. On the Sunday 17th March we have the BAHA annual dinner and this year’s theme is New Orleans, I’m very excited!” “Later in March we have the Jazz & Big Band weekend which has proven hugely popular and I recommend people book early to avoid disappointment. We also have a wine tasting evening on the 20th April which should be fantastic.” “We are looking to bring the beach theme to the hotel – style and comfort and so all visitors will feel at ease and relaxed” added Silva. Eat at The Riviera The Riviera has recently recruited new chefs and the restaurant is open to non-residents, locals are most welcome. The head chef is award winning Simon Fennell, who has worked at the Montague Arms for more than 10 years. He is joined by the extremely talented David Dunn who worked at the Edge restaurant. Silva explained, “they are both enthusiastic and passionate about food. The new taste of the Riviera is Classic British.” Play at The Riviera The hotel also has brilliant leisure facilities, why not try out the indoor pool, a reviving soak in the bubbling spa bath or an invigorating session in the sauna?
