Westbourne News News from Westbourne, Branksome & West Cliff

A Wheely Good Festival The very first Wheels Festival is coming to Bournemouth in May. The free festival is for all the family, set over three days with over 100 events. Expect high energy action across the town and seafront, from beautiful historic classic cars to world-class BMX stunts, Monster Truck parades and supercars. There will be three Grandstands along the beach to watch demonstrations, evening live entertainment, shopping, food and fireworks. Dates: Saturday 24th - Monday 26th May 2014. We’re particularly looking forward to a display celebrating the early years of motoring with pre-war and vintage cars in the Pavilion Theatre car park on Saturday & Sunday. For something a little more nitro filled Team BIGFOOT will be wowing the crowds with car crashing antics and incredible stunts – shows regularly from 12pm-6pm, plus there will be trucks to have a go in, in between performances. Monday shows are from 11am-5pm.

More Super Huts for Alum Chine Do you fancy your very own Super Hut? 18 new Super Huts are up for sale with a 25-year lease following the success of the Alum Chine development. The Super Huts are on a quiet section of promenade to the west of Alum Chine and are one of the projects resulting from the Seafront Strategy, which aims to enhance the town’s world-class seafront. Larger than the traditional beach hut, the Super Huts are the same design as the existing Purbeck View huts at Alum Chine but with a revised colour scheme. If you’re interested in buying a Super Beach Hut or want to know more telephone 01202 451842.

Meeting Makers Inc Westbourne’s crafty new café

Few will have missed the development of one of Westbourne’s most desirable shops over the past few weeks. Sophie and Leon, along with sons Noah, Casey, Evan and a 4th on the way, have been working hard to paint over every last bit of Blockbusters blue and create the wonderful space that is Makers Inc. We went along to find out what Makers Inc is all about and what’s on offer as they open fully in May. The venue provides a community outlet for local crafters and mums to display and sell their wares whilst the café and play area offers deliciously blended coffee and Dorset based Blendings teas. There is a lovely selection of quality crafts ranging from jewellery, paintings, candles, children’s toys to art prints and gifts. Each shelf is rented to a crafter and Makers Inc offers a 0% commission on all sales. There are already over 60 individual businesses displaying in Makers Inc and they are offering a special 6 month package for £200 for our readers. Ask in store. Makers Inc is open from 7am for breakfasts and take-away drinks (check out our 50% off voucher opposite), gourmet paninis are available all day and they use local and organic produce where available. Saul Jones, a local award-winning junior baker provides some delicious cakes and treats. The carrot cake pictured right was moist and delightful and didn’t last long once we’d taken the shot! In keeping with the 'support mums' theme, Femenino organic coffee has been carefully selected in support of a network of mums in 10 different world regions who grow & harvest the beans. Evening Craft Workshops The spacious layout allows the cafe to be used for adult and child workshops that take place from 6pm onwards. Check the website for the latest listings of what’s on and book your space. So why not pop in for a 'feel-good' cup of coffee and some delicious cake and browse some of the lovely crafts local mums have made!

Melodies in Motion For the Groovy Generation!

We know that exercise is good for physical fitness, but research indicates that it's good for brain fitness too. It keeps us alert, happy and motivated and can even keep dementia at bay. Melodies in Motion participant’s feedback has been very positive, “Sue’s classes set me up for the week ahead. I feel good, happy and fit. All the class benefits from the exercises, dancing to lovely music and making friends. Last week we tried a Spanish flamenco dance which was great fun”, reports Anita. “I have found the chair exercise class very helpful by slowly strengthening the muscles in my legs which are needed to support my knees so that I can keep mobile and feel secure as well as helping with sitting down and standing up” says Sue B. Ella who will be returning soon with a new knee reports, “I always enjoy the weekly exercise class with Sue. It is energetic and fun, the choice of music is great and the fitness result is unbelievable.”

Have you just moved to the area? Maybe you've just retired and are looking for a pastime to enrich your relaxation days. How about trying the Argyll Bowling Club, in one of the most picturesque settings possible, overlooking the Westcliff and sea beyond, where people of all ages are made welcome? The location is quite stunning on West OverCliff Drive, above Alum Chine and the zigzag path through the Tropical Gardens. You don't even have to be a bowler to enjoy the club café, known far and wide around Bournemouth for it's excellent meals, sandwiches and snacks. Just sit back and top up your tan if you want, with a glass of something. We spoke to Bernard Kelly, who joined the club in the last year, to get an insight. He told us, “the first thing that attracted me was the glorious location. That and the really good facilities was an easy enticement to join. There is a nice group of people who are only too willing to help you get accustomed to the club, with their local knowledge.” “I have played for the different Argyll teams in the local Saturday leagues and with more than 30 mixed friendlies against people from different parts of the country it is a great way of meeting people.” “But it doesn't matter if you are not exactly a competitive person. You can just go along for a morning roll-up with fellow members, no matter how little or great your experience.” < tb es W to ou e rn

Westbourne’s Music & Arts Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide

About Aaron Gregory Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Aaron has a headline show at O’Neill’s in Bournemouth on Thursday 27th May. Photo by Grant David Read © 2013

May and June could probably rival any couple of months of the year for excitement when it comes to local music. This is the time of the year when the sun begins to shine on our beautiful seaside town and a treasure trove of local festivals begin to bring a buzz to the town. A huge date in your diary should be reserved for the May bank holiday weekend of the 24th, 25th and 26th of May as the inaugural Wheels Festival will be taking place all over Bournemouth including on the West Cliff. This is going to be a massive festival and a great opportunity for families to have a fantastic free day out to look at some classic motors, take part in some fun activities and of course enjoy some live music, including music and entertainment by the sea with spectacular firework shows on Saturday and Monday evenings from 10pm. For listings see www.bournemouthwheels.co.uk At The Winchester, only a short walk from Westbourne, over the next two months they have some huge highlights. In a really interesting vintage and artistic set up the hugely popular Freeway Poets event continues every first Wednesday of the month. This is an event where budding poets and artists come together with a special guest head-liner and put on an evening of thought provoking poetry and art. It has become a premier event due to a fantastic atmosphere whereby anyone is welcomed to enjoy the arts. Poetry is the main focus of the event however further arts are encouraged as well such as acoustic music and painting.

21 www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic

On May 14th the hugely popular television comedian/poet Phill Jupitus will be taking to the stage at The Winchester. This is an amazing opportunity to see a highly popular face in such an intimate session. Phil is a regular face on the BBC show Never Mind the Buzzcocks and has also supported Madness on tour with his comedy/poetry. A must see for definite in the pleasant surroundings of The Winchester. On the 31st May The Winchester is holding a huge fundraiser with local band The Saints of Sin headlining. This is an all dayer with loads on going including DJs, live music and even an auction, it should be great fun and they will be announcing their chosen charities shortly. For more info on the Winchester go to www.thewinchester-bournemouth.co.uk Also in Westbourne, live music is now provided by Rock Restaurant. The restaurant takes pride in some fantastic pasta dishes and they book acoustic artists for you to enjoy with your meal. It is always a nice atmosphere and is an excellent place to try out if you’re a foodie who likes tranquil music. The Westbourne Pub continues to host local musicians at the weekend and is a fun and vibrant place to enjoy a drink and live music. It is the kind of venue you can enjoy moving your feet and hips and yet feel safe and enjoy a chat with your friends. It is a great place to spend your weekend evenings after a day of sport or shopping. If you want to get up and play yourself, just five minutes out of Westbourne is The Branksome Railway Pub. Two Fridays a month now the Branksome runs an open mic night and it is a good place to showcase your skills and meet like-minded musicians.

Much More Than Just Sweets at The Fair Trader in Westbourne

One of Westbourne’s most popular stores, The Fair Trader, has expanded it’s offering. We visited Jackie and the gang to find out what’s new in store. The first thing you’ll notice is the store’s had a move around and the sweets are now up front. The rear of the store is now dedicated to a large range of stationery products. This useful addition to the store came after significant demand from shoppers for somewhere to buy pens, cello-tape, envelopes, paperclips, glue, notebooks, folders and other essentials. They also offer photocopying, one of the few places still to have this available on the high street. Jackie runs the store along with husband Chris plus Lisa, Hannah, Cheryl and occasionally son Luke even lends a hand. And it’s all hands on deck most of the time as a steady stream of customers pop in to get their traditional sweets, Lotto tickets, snacks and daily papers. New Opening Hours The Fair Trader is extending it’s opening hours for the summer, from 7am to 6pm Monday to Saturday and 8.30am to 12.30pm on Sundays. Sugar Free Sweets Jackie told us about a new range of sugar free sweets that have been gaining popularity. “The sugar free range is a hit with diabetics and those looking to cut their sugar intake” explains Jackie. “We have everything from sugar free sherbet lemons to chocolate limes and other popular classics”. However it’s liquorice that remains the best seller at The Fair Trader we’re informed by Jackie. As the summer approaches The Fair Trader will also be offering a new range of ice-cream so be sure to pop in as you make your way through Westbourne’s famous arcade.
