THE 47 ANNUAL GARAGE & ESTATE SALE th
th
The Settlement Home for Children’s 47 Annual Garage & Estate Sale was a great success and raised over $1 4 million thanks to our sponsors, shoppers and volunteers
The Sale kicked off on Wednesday, November 2 with our Preview Party Sponsors, their guests and attendees enjoyed early access to deals before doors were opened to the public. The Preview Party is a fun evening where guests have a catered dinner and complimentary drinks while they shop and mingle
As an Austin tradition, The Sale gives shoppers a unique opportunity to purchase from thousands of items at bargain prices From jewelry to tools to vintage items to children’s clothing, there is something for everyone!
This annual fundraising event is much more than a shopping experience as it has a lasting impact well beyond its date in November The proceeds generated from The Sale will support the programs and services provided to youth in foster care who reside at The Settlement Home, as well as their foster and adoptive families that provide nurturing homes to children
2022 Garage & Estate Sale Co-Chairs: Stephanie Hearne, Chyrisse Miller and Mary Helen Wheelock managed the logistics for this event starting in January to ensure that the weekend-long event went off without a hitch Their dedication made it possible for the 10,000 plus attendees to have a fun shopping experience
In 1916, twelve women set about to serve children in need This passion for taking care of children has continued for over 100 years Today, The Settlement Club is a group of over 400 dedicated women who are committed to supporting The Settlement Home through good governance and by ensuring the financial sustainability of The Home
For the last 47 years, every Monday leading up to The Sale, Club members and volunteers sort, clean, price and store items that the community has donated They then organize the items into 20 shopping departments for The Sale

Located in Austin on a 10-acre campus, The Settlement Home is a licensed nonprofit that provides 24-hour care to help children in foster care access the support they need to build and preserve a stable sense of well-being
Each of The Home’s programs builds a foundation for children as they access healing for a hopeful future The skills they learn and the self-belief they build continue to develop well beyond their time in our care As adults, they have a higher chance of maintaining steady employment and stable housing, as well as lower chances of incarceration or experiencing homelessness As parents, they have the ability to build and sustain healthy relationships with their children All of the children we serve can break the cycle of abuse, and we are dedicated to supporting them as they realize the depth of their potential
Our Residential Treatment Center provides 27 beds for girls and young women ages 12–21 in a highly structured environment with 24-hour therapeutic support. While many children in foster care are in the state’s custody for basic needs, all residents at The Settlement Home for Children come to us with urgent, critical needs. Our RTC is a safe and nurturing environment that enables our residents to begin trusting the healing process.
Our Group Home Program provides 23 beds for girls and young women ages 12-21 in a home-like setting with 24-hour therapeutic support. The goal of the GHP is to create a family-like environment while giving our residents the opportunity to practice independent living skills that help them prepare for adulthood. Residents go grocery shopping together, cook at home and have independent recreation time.
Our Transitional Living Program provides 11 efficiency apartments for young women 18 and older who are not quite prepared to live on their own and therefore choose to remain in the custody of Child Protective Services. Residents in our TLP live in apartments on our campus and receive case management and therapy. These young women continue to build life skills like financial literacy and job preparedness.
Foster & Adoption Program (FAP)
Our Foster & Adoption Program works with Child Protective Services to provide either a temporary or permanent home for boys and girls of all ages who can no longer remain in their current living situation. To best support our children and families, our FAP trains foster and adoptive families in trauma-informed care, supports them through the foster and adoption process and provides post-adoptive services such as therapy and resource referrals.
Our on-campus University of Texas Charter School serves students from sixth through 12th grades and provides special education services, credit recovery and tutoring.
At The Settlement Home, we make it our priority to give the children in our care normalizing experiences. Having a magical holiday experience as a kid is normal, and we strive to give that to our residents

Become a Foster or Adoptive Family
"Adoption is a lifelong journey, and all families need a little help along the way Our goal is to collaboratively support each individual family member We view parents as the experts and the conduits of change, and our job is to provide the space and the skills to bring healing "
Megan Zellner, our Foster & Adoption Clinical Director and a licensed therapist
At The Settlement Home for Children, our Foster & Adoption Program serves boys and girls from infancy to age 18. Our dedicated team recruits, screens, trains and verifies potential foster and adoptive parents to become providers with us The months and years after adoption can be overwhelming for adoptive families, our goal is to walk with you every step of the way
