Dr. Clarence Sutton, Jr. Superintendent
Huntsville City Schools
Dr. Clarence Sutton, Jr. brings over 31 years of experience as a teacher, principal, and central office administrator. A visionary leader, Dr. Sutton was unanimously appointed by the Huntsville City Board of Education in June 2023 and has since focused on the HCS Journey to Excellence. Under his leadership, Huntsville City Schools (HCS) has achieved significant milestones, including:
Prior to becoming Superintendent, Dr. Sutton served Huntsville City Schools as Chief of Staff, Deputy Superintendent of Learning Supports, and Chief Academic Officer. Before joining HCS, he was the transformative principal of Central High School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Under his leadership, Central dramatically increased graduation rates and scholarship offers, and established a model career pathway program used across the state. His work garnered national attention, including features by ProPublica, The Atlantic, ESPN, MSNBC, and international outlets.
Dr. Sutton has received numerous prestigious honors, including 2024 Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from President Joe Biden, 2024 Black History Maker of Alabama, SCLC Drum Major for Justice, 2024 Alabama PTA Outstanding Superintendent, and 2018 UCEA Excellence in Educational Leadership.
Dr. Sutton is a firm believer in the power of partnerships with businesses and community organizations to expand student learning and workforce development. His leadership continues to steer Huntsville City Schools toward academic excellence, equity, and innovation.
He and his wife, Jameka, are proud parents of six children and grandparents of three.
