She said in an interview that “I can only count how many times we actually ate three times a day becausemost of the time, it’s either twice or none at all.” They went to sleep without any food for an entire day numerous times. She feels sad for her children, as it is not even their fault that they had to suffer fromhunger. She admitted that she wishes she could find a high-paying job, but due to her health condition, she cannot even pursue this dream.
Ever since Rubilyn was born, she has been livingin a crowded and smelly place near the sea.She said that despite their repeated applications to the 4Ps, their cry for help went unanswered for years. She stated that she is not interested in materialistic things and that all she really wants is the budget to provide her kids with the food they deserve in the first place.
With the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 2, which is called “zero hunger,” children like Rubilyn’s will be able to receive the nutrition that they need. With SDG 2, governmental agencies will also be able to enhance their facilitation of providing assistance to the needy.

SurvivingHungerinaDay
By: Juliana Jakiran
Many Filipinos are still experiencing hunger, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals target goal number 2 is to solve this problem by 2030 and create a community that is zero in hunger. TheNational Nutrition Council (NNC) has identified 10 barangays in Zamboanga City that have a high prevalence rate of stunted and underweight children in 2020.
Zamboangeños are experiencing hunger day by day, and Barangay Kasanyangan, Zamboanga City, Philippines, with a total population of 28,819 in 2020 is one of them.
Mrs. Nushiba Alfad Sadjail, a resident of the said Barangayis a 29-year-old mother and a housewife. They have five children living with them; three of them are studying. According to her, their major needs on a daily basis are financial and food assistance. When asked how to survive hunger, she said that “Our family suffers from hunger every day, and sometimes we just go to sleep even though our stomachs are empty”.
On March 25, 2024 at exactly 11in the evening, she and her
family just cried because there was nothing left to eat.
Nurshiba said that this is how they try to survive hunger every day, by letting their children eat first and sleep to forget their hunger.
Her husband, Al-Rahimen Hasan Sadjail is a motorbike driver, which they just rented, and his every-day income is just enough for its boundaries, and sadly, it cannot sustain their daily foods and needs. “We just eat vegetables and dried fish, but mostly just rice soup for the kids,” she said. These everyday activities resulted intheir children’s malnourishment and Nurshiba cannot do anything, she only completed elementary school, and if she finds a job, who will take care of their children?
Her only dream is that someday they will be given an assistance by the government or someone who has a kind soul to sustain their food and everyday needs, and by that, they will notask for any help but they will personally sustain their needs and hunger through their own hardship through the livelihood assistance.

“TB is treatable and medications are also freeat the health centers,” Ms. Eastsun said. They have composed four (4) potent anti-TB drugs, also called RIPE for the standard protocols for TB treatment. RIPE is for Rifampin, Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide, and Ethambutol tablets. This kind of medication is for 6 months treatment for TB to be treated.
While for multi-drug-resistant (MDR-TB) the medication is called BPAL which means the Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, and Linezolid tablets. Multi-drugresistant TB (MDR-TB) requires different medications like BPAL (Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, and Linezolid). However, long treatment
periods pose challenges, necessitating thorough health education to ensure patient compliance and prevent drug resistance.
Challenges faced by the DOH include ensuring timely transportation of medicines and improving access to diagnostic facilities like GENEXPERTS for faster TB testing. To address these, DOH plans to expand GENEXPERTS facilities, implement shorter regimens for MDR-TB patients, and provide free chest X-rays. This year, DOH will continue to conduct active case finding and mobile chest X-ray screenings throughout the region to combat TB, as stated by Ms. Eastsun.

EqualitywithintheCommunity

Gender is often categorized by people into two categories, which are male and female, but for some, like Mhuammar Magasa, a member of the USAD KA-ZAMPEN organization, defines gender as "Something that radiates in you and you have to be confident with no matter who you are.” Equality for everyone means balance and fair opportunities for all, butin this generation, equality is rarely achieved by everybody due to the difference between the gender and sexual orientation of an individual. Gender inequality has been a big issue for we are living in a society full of different perspectives and narratives.
Promoting educational programs will be a big factor in order to achieve gender equality within the community, and to resolve such gender issues in the most appropriate way.As Mhuammar stated "Gender Equality is important as it will bring us peace and harmony.” Treating each other equally is a way of promoting the ideology of equal opportunities and equal rights. Mhuammar was also a victim of discrimination. But being a member of an organization that fights discrimination and gender inequality, gave him the courage to strengthen his fate and gave him the opportunity to voice out his opinionsabout this issue.
Mhuammar and the USAD KAZAMPEN are making their way to end the dispute between equality and inequality for a better world that is open to diversity in culture, religion, and gender and it has one goal and that is to achieve gender equality.
"I firmly believe that every one of us is a jewel, we have our own shimmer, our own color, and most importantly we know our worth in

Clean water is one of the basic needs of people that is free from disease and pollution, which is why under the United Nation seventeen sustainable development goals were designed to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water andsanitationfor all or the SDG6 that were designed to transform the world by 2030.
However, Zamboanga City is in a state of calamity due to water shortage, as announced by the city Disaster Risk Reduction to El Niño phenomenon. That leads half of the city’s 98 barangays without water for half a day.
According to the statement of Ray Vasquez, “The Zamboanga City Water District general manager, half of the city’s 72,000 water consumers will not be having a full day’s supply of water until the situation returns to normal,” as published in inquirer.net reported by Julie S. Alipapa. This means the sixth goal willbe hard to achieve because Zamboanga City is in at state of calamity. But with unified action and making a way to meet the clean water and accessible to all wecan achieve the goal of SDG6.
Barangay Capisan is one of the 98 barangays in Zamboanga City, that are affected by the water rationing, receiving water only twice a week. Due to the lack of water, the residents of Alarcon Drive in Barangay Capisan relied sometimes on spring water. According to the residents, the spring water survived the 2015 El Niño and they are expecting that the water will not run out this year.

ElectricalSubstitutioninZamboangaCity
By: Erica Jane Palisoc
Zamboanga City has seen a historical shift with the installation of electrical substitution in the Tumaga high-end region. This project implemented by the National Power Corporation (NPC) means to uplift the gain of the city for it the community to have reliable electrical supply and an efficient power distribution system. Tumaga Feeder Station plays the role of the main point of redistribution and it is very critical for the power grid in Zamboanga City. The centers which use electricity, such as residences, enterprises, and industries get electricity from here.
The trend towards urbanization and industrial development has led to a significant increase in the electricity demand, which has put much strain on the current power networks, causing inadequacies that call for improvements. The NPC launched a project meant for the replacement of obsolete and worn-out equipment with modern, high-functioning components, which in turn enhanced the ability ofthe power station to provide the electricity needed for increasing power demands.
The new capacity enables the supply of electricity to a growing consumer base without compromising the power quality and with the upgraded and reliable machinery, it lessens the incidence of breakages and power failures. Higher efficiency on the distribution line translates toless energy being lost and lowers the operational costs for power generation companies. Furthermore, the project has received much praise for its reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, thereby promoting the implementation of more sustainable power sharing plans.
With this in mind, the electric connection at Tumaga Load-End in Zamboanga City proves an essential epicenter for the city's power infrastructure to undergo development. This project takes on and solvesthe growing power demands with the development ofa more efficient and environmental system of power distribution. Zamboanga City dwellers and business now have something to hold on to as a more stable and unhindered supply of electricity has been provided, thereby bolstering growth and development in the area.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) was the one who initiated The Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program in 2011, and it is in response to the urgent need for immediate aid and livelihood support for underprivileged workers throughout the Philippines.
The TUPAD program in Zamboanga City is a comprehensive initiative focusing on sustainability, inclusion, and collaboration, encompassing various projects including skill development, agriculture, environmental conservation, and infrastructural development. TUPAD was implemented in Zamboanga City’s 1st District in collaboration with Representative Cong's office in the 1st Congressional District. The Office of City Vice Mayor Atty. on behalf

Zamboanga City is making improvements in securing a more just and equitable society through theimplementation of the GOJUST Project. This initiative was funded by the European Union, aims to significantly improve access to justice for all Filipinos, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups. It will be launched two years from now. GOJUST stands for the Governance in Justice Sector Reform Programme.
The said program recognizes that a responsive and accountable justice system is vital for inclusive and sustainable development. It tackles one of the issues of ensuring that everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, has the opportunity to have their legal matters addressed fairly.

TogetherWeThriveas Change-Makers
By:CarlBenedictMontojoThe only light that can guide one toward a brighter future in the midst of darkness is hope. Some could argue that deeds are what really matter and that hope is only a diversion from winning. Combining the two, the JCI organization strives for success through perseverance and goals that envisage a brighter future for youths and their countrymen.
The JCI is an organization that focuses on developing young leaders to positively impact the community and achieve the 17 United Nations goals set forth in 2015. These goals include gender equality and zero hunger, and JCI seeks to develop sustainable initiatives to address these goals.
The organization aims to establish partnerships with stakeholders to increase influence and outreach, building lasting connections and understanding between them.
In celebration of National Women’s Month, the JCI Zamboanga joined the celebration last Saturday, March 23, at the KCC Mall East Wing Activity Area.
A program called “Pinay Power,” aims to recognize and empower women in the city.
They havenominated the President of the SK Federation, Carol Julian, also known as CJ Dalipe, as a nominee invited here in the program called “Rise Up Woman Boss,” which means building opportunities for strong and successful women.
Their partners camefrom different sectors: the city government of Zamboanga City, Dr. Cecilia Atilano; the city sports officer, which represented one of her staff members, Mr. Evangelista; the Sangguniang Kabataan, Ms. Cj Dalipe; the President of Western Mindanao State University, Dr. Carla Onchotorena; and Dr. Lolina Bajil from the nongovernment sector.
This different sector represents different designated areas, which are sports, youth politics, education, and mental health and wellness. At the end of the event, there was a signing of a Memorandum of Agreement, which is intended for the firstever Western Mindanao Summit that will be held on the 20th day of April.

The1stWesternMindanaoUNSDGSummit
By: Gwyneth RabagoThe 1st Western Mindanao UNSDG Summit, which will be conducted on April 20, 2024, and will beorganized by Mr. Cedrick S.Zabala with the partnership of the JCI organization to advocate the different SDGs for students, universities, communities, and agencies.
JCI is an organization that develops young leaders to create a positive impact on the community. Guided by the 17 goals of 2015, JCI aims to create sustainable programs such as the 1st WMSU Summit, which aims to advocate the different Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for students, the university, the community, and agencies. Different organizations and agencies are invited, and they can share their practices, collaborate, or dialogue together with the other sectors.
This event is a place where different people or leaders from different sectors can dialogue and brainstorm for projects. The event has different activities, such as the launch of magazines, posters, boot exhibits, documentary short films, sustainable art competitions, quiz bees, and more, that can help students gain the necessary experience
and exposure to their talents and skills.
JCI an organization that promotes advocacy andteaches people to take action rather than talk and wonder. JCIis the change maker. This event is both an opportunity for young people to become future leaders and a training ground.
The signing of the MOA between all of the sectors, including more sectors whowill be interested in joining the new JCI project, which is the JCI Cares, a civic environment program where different agencies will come together and go to different barangays, especially the barangays that have difficult access in terms of service, will be done at the end of the program.
This partnership will prove that Western Mindanao State University is committed to its mission and vision of advocating and doing sustainable projects, not just for the students but also for the partners that it has: the city government and civil society. This is not just for student services but also for the community's global goals in achieving the UNSDG.
