The new North and South Plazas have been completed and have made an amazing difference in the collegiate atmosphere and esthetics of the campus.

Alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members are delighted with the new space that helps redefine Wesley College.

In addition to the safety features of converting cross streets through campus into pedestrian-friendly walking malls with benches, the students have been taking advantage of the available Wi-Fi access and using the space as a place to connect. In October, the college community celebrated the Richard '64 and Mary Brown visit with Susan and Bill plazas with two ribbon-cutting events, Johnston during the recent Homecoming Weekend. one featuring Delaware Governor Jack Markell and a second celebration with alumni at Homecoming.

The plazas became a reality because the College and the larger community believe in Wesley and recognize the plazas will serve students for future generations. Thank you for your support for this endeavor.

Our next project is the acquisition of the J. Allen Frear Federal Building. This 36,000-square-foot facility, built in 1974, will be renovated to become our new Health Sciences Building. With the ever-growing demand for health care professionals, Wesley is poised to meet that challenge through our highly regarded nursing program. Located only blocks away from the main campus, this facility will literally open doors to new learning opportunities for our students.

Other topics in this issue of Wesley magazine include the College being named “Corporation of the Year,” impressive growth in the honors program, faculty and student accomplishments, and the Honor Roll of Donors that recognizes individuals and organizations who have provided financial support for Wesley this past fiscal year.

FACULTY ACCOMPLISHMENTS On June 14, Dr. Jack Barnhardt, associate professor of psychology, Dr. Angela D’Antonio, Dr. Jeffrey K. Gibson, Professor Victor Greto, Dr. Derald Wentzien, Professor Mark Whitaker, and Dr. Patricia Dwyer gave a presentation at the annual conference of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) in Washington, D.C., on the College’s efforts to address long-standing inequities in faculty salaries and the development of a formula to guide incremental market adjustments over a four-year period. The group will return to the AAUP’s annual convention next year to present on the implementation and progress of these efforts.

Susan Bobby, assistant professor of English, published a book on Sept. 7, 2012 titled Beyond His Dark Materials: Innocence and Experience in the Fiction of Philip Pullman. It is the second book that Bobby has had published in three years. Bobby corresponded with the author himself and this is the only book of its kind.

Dr. Malcolm J. D’Souza, professor of chemistry, is principal author of five peer-reviewed journal articles and 39 conference presentation abstracts for 2012. D’Souza has procured approximately $400,000 in federal grants and is principal investigator on a recent $860,000

proposal to the National Science Foundation to secure tuition scholarships for STEM majors. Eleven undergraduates mentored in his laboratory earned national awards and two earned $3,000 tuition scholarships from the NASA Delaware Space Grant program. In June, D’Souza was awarded the ACS’s 2012 E. Emmett Reid Award, which recognizes high-quality teaching in chemistry at small colleges in the ACS Mid-Atlantic region. In October, the European journal International Innovations did a feature article that outlined the many successes achieved in D’Souza’s Directed Research Program in Chemistry.

Dr. Angela D’Antonio, associate professor of psychology, recently presented three workshops on the topic of hoarding at the Delaware Hospice Family Support Center, in Milford, Del., and the annual Aging Symposium sponsored by Upper Shore Aging, Inc. and the Talbot County Senior Center in Easton, Md. These presentations focused on clinical assessment and causes of hoarding, effective treatments and coping strategies.

D’Antonio will present a follow-up workshop on hoarding at the Talbot County Senior Center.

Dr. Linda De Roche, professor of English and American studies, published her essay “Articulating the Posthumous Reputation: Edith Wharton’s Obituaries” in the

critical study Edith Wharton in Context (Cambridge University Press). Her study is the first to examine Wharton’s literary stature at the time of her death. Seventeen Wesley students will travel to London with De Roche and Dr. Jeffrey Mask, professor of religion and philosophy, in November to experience the history and culture of this world capital. Most of the travelers are enrolled in either De Roche’s “History of Drama” course or Mask’s “English Reformation” course.

Victor Greto, associate professor of media arts, presented a seminar and workshop on Aug. 18 at the 5th Annual Lewes Creative Artists’ Workshop. On June 14, Greto and the Salary Task Force presented their work with Wesley College administration to a group of colleagues from around the country at the American Association of University Professors’ annual conference in Washington, D.C. In early March, Greto moderated a panel at the Associated Collegiate Press’ National College Journalism Convention in Seattle. He wrote three pieces for Wilmington-based Brandywine Signature Magazine.

Greto also wrote a profile of Rina Cutler, head of Philadelphia’s Transportation Department, for the website WTS International, which promotes women in transportation. On Oct. 20, Greto presened a feature-writing seminar

HIGHLIGHTS News and Views from WESLEY COLLEGE at the 4th Annual Vine and Vessels Christian Writers Fellowship, “Connecting Pen to Purpose,” in Georgetown, Del. Dr. Teresa Griffin, associate professor of media arts, had her short story titled “Learning to Turn,” published in Ninepatch: A Creative Journal for Women and Gender Studies, Vol. 1, Issue 1. Griffin also published “Critical Reading of the Web,” with Dr. Debra Rae Cohen, assistant director for information technology and psychologist from the University of Delaware, in Communication Teacher, Vol. 26 Issue 1.

Dr. Lynn J. Lofthouse, associate professor of speech communications, recently had a paper accepted by the International Academy of Linguistics, Behavioral, and Social Sciences. The paper is titled “How Students’ Participation in Speech Practice Correlates to the Grade They Receive on the Final Speech Effort.” For the last three years, Lofthouse has won the “best paper” award in her session at the academy’s conference.

In June 2012, Dr. Jeffery Mask, professor of religion, philosophy and American studies, attended the Jesse Ball du Pont Summer Seminar for College at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, N.C. The seminar was titled, “There's More To It: What Early Apocrypha Can Tell Us about Christianity.” Dr. James Wilson, professor of music, was also a member of the three-week seminar. It consisted of discussion of primary and secondary texts related to literature that was not included in the New Testament canon.

Dr. Cynthia Newton, assistant professor of political science, published three assignments/chapters

with Soomo Publishing and their online Americans Governing course text this past spring. She is currently reviewing a text for them as well. Newton currently serves as the advisor to the Student Government Association and is chair of the Student Affairs Faculty Committee. Newton also planned some events for the campus community, including a film event on the portrayal of women in advertising and politics last spring, and a speaker for Constitution Day in September.

Nancy D. Rubino, professor of nursing, earned the designation Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) after meeting strict eligibility criteria and successfully completing a rigorous certification examination developed and administered by the National League for Nursing (NLN). Rubino also had her article titled Integrating Quality and Safety Education in Nursing: Challenges for Nurse Educators published in the Delaware Nurses Association official peer reviewed publication, The Reporter.

Dr. B. Patricia Patterson, professor of education, director of graduate programs in education and director of Assessment and Accreditation for Teacher Education, wrote three chapters for two different books edited by fellow teacher educators in the 2011-2012 academic year. She contributed two chapters to a recently published book on teacher preparation edited by her colleague Dr. Jill Cole. Patterson also contributed a chapter on plants to a forthcoming book edited by Dr. Craig Wilson, a science educator at a Pennsylvania university.

Dr. Patricia Sherblom, associate professor and program chair of physical education K-12, and Dr. B. Patricia Patterson were invited as presenters at the 2012 Annual Ideas to Action Institute at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky., held May 21-23. They presented a program titled “A ConstructivistAligned Model for the Teaching of Critical Thinking Compared to the Paul and Elder Critical Thinking Framework.”

Dr. Valerie Perez, assistant professor of psychology, presented two posters at the American Psychology-Law Society Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in March.

The first poster, Liars and Truth Tellers’ Narrative Strategies, explored the strategies used by truthful and deceptive students during structured interviews. The second poster, Discriminating Between Liars and Truth Tellers Using Their Narrative Strategies, investigated observers’ ability to accurately identify truthful and deceptive interviewees. Both studies were conducted at Florida International University in Miami, Fla., with Dr. Ronald Fisher, professor of psychology.

Lasting Legacy

Director of Admissions Art Jacobs took his leave and retired after 22 years of dedicated work in the Admissions Office.

“Wesley was always a wonderful institution,” Jacobs says, recalling how much the school has changed since he joined the staff. “The size, both with the population and the facilities, wasn’t as large as it is today, and the school’s diversity has

grown in leaps and bounds.” Jacobs adds that he credits Wesley’s recruiting staff over the years for their tremendous contributions to where Wesley College is today.

Jacobs says introducing incoming students to Wesley College and letting them see all it has to offer, as well as seeing those same students walk across the stage in the graduation ceremonies, were some of his favorite experiences of being at Wesley.

Advancing Academics

By CHRIS AGAR ’11 ESLEY COLLEGE is offering two new majors for students to choose from for the 2012-13 academic year.

The first is philosophy and religion. This program will attempt to give students the tools necessary to answer pertinent questions about human life. The courses will cover a variety of subjects to help students get a better understanding of the role history and culture play in the growth of religious and philosophical beliefs as well as learn about modern movements.

Different aspects the major will tackle include the nature and impact of the religious experience, the relevance of personal, social, and professional ethics; and the limitations of scientific and technological responses to the challenges of human life. Alban Urbanas, professor of philosophy and French, states, “There’s a strong commonality between philosophy and religion, and we believe that they will fine tune a student’s understanding and open up new ways of thinking.”

Upon completing the necessary requirements, students will be awarded with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religion. Those with great knowledge in this subject have gone on to have careers in various fields ranging from reli-

gious ministry to politics. “Wesley College is understanding the need for majors like this so students can see the benefit of thinking,” says Urbanas. Students also have the opportunity to earn a minor in one or the other.

The other new major is music.

This program aims to prepare students to have a successful career in music. Students will be allowed to spend time in a state of the art recording studio and other music technology facilities as well as pursue performance opportunities at main venues in the state.

The music major offers a choice of two different concentrations: music history or music theory and composition. Each one has their

own set of requirements for students to complete. Those who choose to major in music history will primarily deal with courses detailing the history of certain genres (including jazz and opera) as well as study the evolution of music during a specific time period (Twentieth Century music).

Music theory and composition majors will learn about the process of writing music by taking four semesters of Composition Lessons. They will also learn the techniques of conducting as well as orchestration and arranging, among other topics.

The Music Department also offers private lessons for voice and instruments for those who wish to develop their skills even further.

RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE

Wesley College was presented with a Tribute by the Kent County Levy Court on September 25 in celebration of the College being named Corporation of the Year by the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce.

WESLEY COLLEGE won the Corporation of the Year Award during the Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce’s Excellence in Business Awards Dinner on June 28.

Three corporations were nominated and competed for votes from Chamber members. Award criteria included having more than 50 employees, using creative and imaginative strategies in dealing with the public or business community, showing growth in either number of employees or in sales dollars, and responding to adversity with creative solutions.

One prime example of collaborative planning includes the new Wesley Plaza. The project combined support from the City of Dover, the Wesley Student Government Association, the Delaware Legislature and others.

“This is a tremendous honor and we are truly grateful for the business and community support,” said Wesley President William N. Johnston of the Chamber award.

HIGHLIGHTS News and Views from WESLEY COLLEGE EXPANDING HONORS Program triples in size over seven years

By JOSEPH GUARINO ’12 SINCE 2005 , Wesley College’s honors program has been a symbol

for outstanding scholastic prowess and persistence, nurturing a group of students who excel amongst their peers in their academic accomplishments at Wesley. In seven years, enrollment has tripled in size. Incoming students must now be placed on a waiting list to join the program.

“With close to 75 students this fall, this growth has resulted primarily from increased efforts to communicate with prospective and current students about the honors program and the opportunities it offers,” says Dr. Jeffrey Gibson, associate professor of English and director of the honors program.

Arriving freshmen must have maintained a 3.3 GPA in high school and must have earned a score of at least 1400 on their SATs. An essay or letter of recommendation also is required for admission to the program.

Gibson is pleased with the diversity among incoming honors students. “We currently have students from almost every major on campus, numerous student-athletes and several students involved in student clubs, organizations and Student Government Association,” he says.

Incoming honors students this year have a new opportunity for housing. Roe Hall, one of the traditional halls on Wesley’s campus, now includes a floor dedicated to honors students. The amenities in Roe include lobbies on each floor reserved as study areas for hard working honors students.

Honors housing is not a new idea at Wesley, however, as the Joseph S. Bellmeyer Honors House has been dedicated exclusively to returning students enrolled in the honors program since 2005. The honors house, which has room for 12 students, has eight residents living there this semester. One of them is Catherine Gross, a sophomore majoring in biological chemistry.

Gross “Living in the honors house is really conducive to studying, compared to when I lived in the dorms last year, where it was just really loud and hard to get anything done inside of the dorm rooms,” Gross says. “In the house it’s quiet, with only seven or eight of us living there, so it’s nice.”

Being a part of the honors program at Wesley comes with a variety of academic advantages, including the opportunity to attend four seminars and participate in two independent study choices. Students in the program also receive the same registration priority as seniors over other students when it comes time to sign up for next semester’s courses.

Zac Lebeau, an English major in his sophomore year, sees the priority registration as a crucial benefit for the program.

“As a sophomore, the early priority class scheduling has definitely helped me. I’m able to get into the classes I Lebeau need,” Lebeau says. “That’s probably the biggest benefit of all for me since I’m only a sophomore.”

Honors students also benefit from smaller classes, receiving individual attention from faculty members who share the same drive and dedication as the students that they mentor. This helps promote each student’s personal growth in academia and perpetuates the hard work ethic for which the honors program proudly stands.

Due to increased participation in the honors program, the number of faculty teaching honors courses has tripled from four to 12, along with an increase in honors courses from three to eight per semester in order to accommodate incoming honors students.

Erich Gillespie, a senior math major, describes the faculty’s involvement as helpful for the transition to college. “Being surrounded by the faculty of the honors program makes it very easy, because you’re still young and Gillespie that transition would’ve been a lot more difficult if I didn’t have professors like Dr. Armstrong or Dr. Urbanas there for me,” Gillespie says.

With each semester that honors students are active in the honors program they are eligible to receive merit-based scholarships, such as the Presidential Scholarship, which is awarded to students who display a tenacious performance in their scholastic career.

Special school trips and events are offered exclusively to students enrolled in the program as opportunities to broaden horizons and provide the students with experiences that they will carry with them throughout their lifetime. Gross went to Ellis Island to see the Statue of Liberty, and Gillespie visited the religious commune Oneida in upstate New York. Another trip to Oneida is planned this October, with Gross and Lebeau planning to attend.

“Transformative”...that’s how people have described Wesley’s new North and South Plazas. The historic setting of Wesley College’s campus has been transformed from a disconnected collection of buildings near the center of Dover to a clearly defined collegiate environment.

“I didn’t recognize the place when I got back on campus,” said Esmeralda Elsakhawy, a sophomore legal studies major. “It feels so much more like a college now.”

The project converted sections of North Bradford, Fulton and Cecil streets from busy through streets into walkways, plazas and green space. The new plazas are not only protected from vehicular traffic, they are safe, well-lit places to congregate, to study, and to socialize while enjoying a finished project that has been many years in the making.

The $2.7 million improvement project had been on the master plan since 2002 but became an active venture in 2009 when the Wesley administration broached the concept with the City of Dover and neighbors living near the College.

“I have utmost appreciation for the many organizations, the neighbors, the Dover City Council and elected officials for all of their guidance and support to make this project a reality,” said Wesley College President Bill Johnston.

The Board of Trustees supported the project from the concept stage and ultimately encouraged the admin-

istration to complete the entire project in one summer rather than constructing the plazas in segments over several years.

Financial support for the project came from many sources, including the Student Government Association and the Wesley Alumni Association. Funding also came from the Delaware Infrastructure Investment Committee with a $1.58 million grant for infrastructure improvements, and National Management Resources Corporation, Wesley’s facility management services company, gave $250,000. The sizable group effort included the community, state and local government in addition to the campus community.

“The end result has a greater impact than we had envisioned and offers so many opportunities to our students. This truly makes Wesley a cohesive student-centered learning community,” Johnston said.

Starting in May, the redefining of the campus took shape throughout the summer and was completed before the start of the fall semester. Students were greeted with a new look that featured a transformed environment, from brick columns at each entrance of the plazas, to landscaping, benches, brickwork, walkways and Wi-Fi access.

Making a more pedestrian-friendly collegiate environment has enhanced the sense of community and engagement for students, the community, faculty and staff. The space has already been utilized for campus activities including involvement fairs, prospective student open houses and student events such as Zip-lining.

Many more events and gatherings will be on the horizon since the new plazas have liberated the outdoor space to accommodate a host of needs.

TO BE ON CAMPUS THESE DAYS IS TO WITNESS a college more integrated than most in this country: nationally, 14 percent of college students are African American; Wesley’s minority population well exceeds that. That wasn’t always the case, as alumnae Gloria James ’73, the Reverend Charlotte Nichols ’73 and Peggi (Young) Watson ’73 well know. Back in the fall of 1971 when these three women arrived in Dover, they were among just 10 African Americans in their class. This was a time when the country was in turmoil—when civil rights, women’s rights and the Vietnam War were all at the forefront—and these pioneers were recruited

by Wesley as it sought to integrate the campus more fully and to bring the benefits of a Methodist college education to a broader swath of the population.

James and Watson were freshman-year roommates, and James roomed with Nichols in their second year. All three women went on to achieve considerable academic and professional success since graduating from Wesley, and they have continued to deepen their relationship with God and the United Methodist Church. Wesley, they say, played an important part in their growth and development— intellectually, spiritually and socially.

They are grateful, as well, for the friendship they developed with each other while at Wesley, a friendship that continues to this day. “We have the kind of relationship where it doesn’t matter how frequently or infrequently we see each other, it’s like we were together just yesterday,” Nichols says. LESSONS IN LIFE It wasn’t always easy to be among the few black faces on campus in the early 1970s, the women admit. “There was a lot of curiosity about us among the other students, many of whom had had little previous exposure to African Americans,” Watson says, and partly because the school was so small, it felt at times like they lived under a microscope. “But we were open to discussions.

Particularly with our friends we would have discussions about how we were the same and different,” she adds.

Watson calls herself a joiner. She sang in the Wesley choir and was active in planning student activities designed to unite the campus. She recalls two activities that were particularly successful in that respect, a talent show and an all-campus art creation party after which the student-painted canvases were donated to the College. “A lot of people participated in both of these events. They really promoted community because they were inclusive of everybody,” Watson says.

The students at Wesley, she says, were different, and she socialized with blacks and whites alike inside and outside the classroom. “I loved Wesley,” James says.

“People in general were friendly, and I liked the small, personalized environment.” The small environment, she adds, encouraged integration much more so than did the large, public university environment in which her sister found herself.

Nichols says her time at Wesley was a combination of the best of times and the worst of times, but that if she had to do it all over again, she would “absolutely 100 percent” choose Wesley. “I knew that Wesley was intentionally trying to become an inclusive college,” she says.

“Attending Wesley was very much a part of my calling and my journey. I am still informed in the way I minister and how I value other people by certain things I learned and heard at Wesley,” she adds. She particularly credits then Chaplain Ed Wilkins with being a guide and mentor as she worked through her own religious growth and the challenges of being a minority at a time when the United States was grappling with equal rights and integration. She learned from Wilkins, she says, how leaders support those who are dealing with issues of racism and religious questioning, and she was able to draw on those lessons years later when she herself worked in campus ministry at another college.

AFTER WESLEY James, a selfdescribed army brat who had lived throughout the south and Southwest, says that the blatant racism she experienced while growing up had persuaded her that she should go to a black college. When she was offered a scholarship by Wesley, however, her parents encouraged her to try the school. As a high school senior, she was skeptical. “My

All three women came from families that valued education, and their own drive to succeed led them to continue their education after earning their associate degrees at Wesley, which was then a two-year college. Each of the women continued on to earn a bachelor’s and multiple graduate degrees. Nichols received a bachelor’s degree from Salisbury University and both a master of religious education and a master of divinity from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Watson earned a B.A. from Boston University. She holds a master’s degree in education from Harvard University and attended graduate school in clinical psychology at Temple University. After graduating from Wellesley College, James earned a master’s from Salisbury State and a doctorate from the University of Delaware.

Though the three forged a strong friendship while at Wesley, Watson says, they all had very different personalities. “Gloria was more outspoken and outgoing, more willing to talk about cultural and philosophical issues,” she says. “I was more of a practical problem-solver.” Nichols was always heavily involved in church matters. But the differences were

Maryland high school had been recently desegregated,” she recalls, “and I had people there I thought were my good friends. They acted like friends in class, but when they saw me at social events or on weekends, they would pretend they didn’t know me, and that hurt.”

less important, Watson says, than what they shared: the same core values of honesty, family and hard work.

“We all respected each other immensely—and still do,” she adds.

Their paths after Wesley have taken the women in separate directions, but all three entered careers that enable them to help others—Nichols as a United Methodist minister, James as a public health administrator, and Watson as a child psychologist.

Nichols has continued in her career to be a pioneer for women and blacks, making history in 1990 as the first African American woman appointed district superintendent in the U.S. United Methodist Church. The appointment also marked the first time a woman was appointed district superintendent in the PeninsulaDelaware Conference, which serves Delaware and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Nichols was appointed to a second term as district superintendent in 2005 and now also serves as dean of the cabinet with additional responsibilities on behalf of the Bishop.

Her work takes her on the road throughout the Eastern Shore to visit the 80 pastors and 130 churches under her purview. They include congregations both large and small, in cities like Salisbury and Ocean City as well as in the Eastern Shore’s many rural areas, including three churches on Smith Island accessible only by boat.

Nichols was prepared for the ministry in part, she says, by her own rich spiritual experiences at Wesley College, which included mandatory chapel, guest speakers and spiritual retreats and the wise counseling of the chaplain and administrators.

James says that the academic foundation she received at Wesley prepared her well for her future endeavors.

“Wesley taught me good study skill habits. It also taught me that two trains of thought need to be developed—both academic and social— and my experience at Wesley did that very well,” she says. Her varied career has included being a disc jockey, a Head Start social worker and a health care administrator. Her current position as bureau chief for adolescent and reproductive health with the Delaware Division of Public Health calls upon all the varied knowledge and skills that she developed over the years.

“Throughout my life I prayed to God for direction,” James says. “And the combination of my personality and the spirit intervening has led me to all these career avenues, and to where I am today.”

Her many responsibilities with the Division of Public Health include supervising the staff responsible for

family planning services at 26 clinic sites and 28 schoolbased health centers throughout Delaware. She also works with physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers and health care systems throughout the state to ensure student service delivery. Among her most recent accomplishments was securing a federal grant for pregnancy prevention in Delaware through the national Personal Responsibility Education Program.

The third member of this Wesley trio found her vocation as a school psychologist—and particularly in the past two decades, as a short-term missionary in Africa for her church. In her nearly 20-year career in New Jersey schools she coordinated services for students in grades 1-12 in public and private schools. She worked with students with an array of challenges from physical disabilities to developmental delays to emotional disturbances. Although her health forced her to retire from a Camden County school district in 2007, she has continued her work into the present as a consultant in various educational settings in the Philadelphia area.

Watson also has felt called to missionary work, and she has been on short-term mission trips within the U.S. and throughout the world. Her heart, though, is with Africa, and she has been on mission trips to Ghana, Liberia, Togo, South Africa and, most frequently, to Kenya. Kenya was also the site of her longest mission trip—a school-year assignment to Nairobi where she served as both the first school counselor at St. Mary’s Education Centre Secondary School and as an educational consultant and teacher trainer for a private school serving children with special needs.

Being among the small group of African American students at Wesley in the early 1970s meant that sometimes Nichols, James and Watson needed to call upon

ABOVE AND BEYOND WESLEY INDUCTS 14 INTO HALL OF FAME Membership in Wesley College's Athletic Hall of Fame expanded from 96 to 110 when 14 newly-elected members were inducted in a ceremony on Friday, October 12 at the Schwartz Center for the Arts.

Joe Able, John Araneo, Harry Blackney, Chuck Brenner, Jim Buggy, Brian Chiles, Glenn Courtney, Don Di Blasi, Dickie Fulton, Tom Green, Albert Horne (posthumously), Coleman Morris, Allen Mushett and Jason Visconti make up the 14-member Class of 2012. Additionally, the 1962 Football team, and 1966-67 Men's Basketball team were the first Wolverine intercollegiate teams to receive induction into Wesley College immortality.

1962 FOOTBALL Hall of Fame head coach Dick Smith led the Wolverines to an 8-0 record. This year marks the 50th anniversary of this historic team’s undefeated season, a first for the Wolverines in any sport.

1966-67 MEN'S BASKETBALL Led by Hall of Fame head coach Jim Wentworth, the Wolverines earned a top seed and collected their first National Junior College Tournament victory over Penn State-Behrend.

JOE ABLE Football and Baseball Class of 2003 Joe Able earned all-conference honors in both football and baseball in his four years with the

Wolverines. Able was recognized by his conference five times and still holds the baseball team career record for home runs and triples.

Upon graduation he also ranked third in games played, runs and hits and still is among the top 10 in each category. On the gridiron, he left Wesley ranked third in receiving yards, fifth in catches and third in receiving touchdowns. Also a solid student in the classroom, Able was a three-time Academic All-Conference selection and played in the Indoor Football League (IFL) after graduation.

JOHN ARANEO Football Class of 1967 John Araneo was a two-time AllRegion and All-Conference selec-

tion for the Wolverines' football team in 1965-66, he led the team to a conference championship. A team captain, Araneo went on to play at Adelphi University and later assisted on the Panthers’ coaching staff for three years.

HARRY BLACKNEY Football Class of 1966 Despite playing just one season on the Wolverines’ NJCAA football team in 1965, Harry Blackney is widely considered by Wesley JUCO alums to be one of the greatest players to ever don the Navy & White. In his one season at Wesley, Blackney played both offense and defense and then went on to play three years at the University of Maryland. After his playing days at

College Park were over, Blackney was selected in the 12th Round of the 1969 NFL Draft by the New York Giants at running back.

CHUCK BRENNER Football and Wrestling Class of 1969 Chuck Brenner played two seasons of football and also was a standout on Wesley's first intercollegiate wrestling teams in 1966 and 1967.

A two-time All-American and Conference Champion, Brenner went on to play in the JUCO AllStar Game.

JIM BUGGY Baseball Class of 1998 A four-year starter on the baseball team, Jim Buggy was a two-time captain and most valuable player.

Buggy was a standout on the mound, and at the plate, and threw a no-hitter against Lincoln University. When he graduated, Buggy ranked second in earned run average, third in innings pitched, complete games and starts while finishing fourth in shutouts. He also left with the single-season doubles record.

Following his time at Wesley, Buggy was an All-Star selection in the Delco Semi-Pro League.

BRIAN CHILES Football Class of 1971 A two-year standout at Wesley, Brian Chiles then went on play for West Virginia University's football team. A 1969 NJCAA All-American, Chiles helped the Wolverines to the JUCO National Championship Game where he rushed for 204 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries. The Wesley College Male Athlete of the Year in 1970, Chiles graduated from WVU as the 16th leading-rusher in Mountaineer history.

GLENN COURTNEY Football and Baseball Class of 1975 The 1975 Wesley College Male Athlete of the Year, Courtney played on both the Wolverines' football and baseball teams. A two-time AllConference honoree, Courtney helped the football team to a conference championship. After leaving

Wesley, Courtney went on to play football at Millersville.

DON Di BLASI Football Class of 1967 An All-Conference selection in 1965, Don Di Blasi led the Wolverines in scoring and to a pair of conference championships. After scoring three touchdowns in the 1965 conference title game, Di Blasi went on to play football and lacrosse at Hofstra University.

DICKIE FULTON Football Class of 1968 Fulton led the Wesley College football team in rushing in both 1966 and 1967 and also led the team in receiving to help earn him AllRegion and All-Conference honors.

After playing in the JUCO All-Star Game, Fulton went on to play at Tennessee Tech where he still holds the record with a 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. To this day, he is the only player from TTU to run back a kick 100 yards, and one of just eight players in Ohio Valley Conference history.

TOM GREEN Basketball Class of 1981 Tom Green was a two-time AllRegion and All-Conference honoree on the men's basketball team in the 1977 and 1978 seasons. After leading the Wolverines in scoring and to a conference title in his second season, Green was named the Wesley College Male Athlete of the Year and played in the JUCO AllStar Game. After leaving Wesley, Green started at point guard for West Chester University and later became an assistant coach for the Golden Rams and head coach at Conestoga High School.

ALBERT HORNE Basketball Class of 1970 Horne was a two-year starter for the Wolverines in the Junior College era before going on to play at Greensboro College. An All-Dixie Conference selection at Greensboro, Horne was described by James Wentworth as “having the best range on a jump shot of anyone he

has ever seen.� After passing away at the age of 43 in 1992, Horne was inducted into the Delaware Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2010, the Delaware Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and the Delaware Sports Museum Hall of Fame earlier this year.

COLEMAN MORRIS Baseball and Basketball Class of 2001 Coleman Morris earned four letters each in both basketball and baseball and was a two-time AllConference catcher. A Team MVP in baseball and Wesley College Male Athlete of the Year, Morris was also a multi-year starter on the basketball team. Upon graduation, Morris ranked among the top 10 in career and single-season doubles.

ALLEN MUSHETT Football and Wrestling Class of 1967 Mushett was the team captain on Wesley's first intercollegiate wrestling teams in 1966 and 1967 and also played one year on the football team. A two-time AllRegion and All-Conference selection on the mat, Mushett served in the United States Air Force for 24 years and earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

JASON VISCONTI Baseball and Football Class of 2005 Visconti was a four-year performer on the baseball team but really made his mark as a quarterback on the football team. A two-time AllAmerican and team captain, Visconti led the Wolverines to their first NCAA playoff game in 2000 and three conference championships. He still holds the Wesley single-game passing record for yards and touchdowns and played in the 2003 Aztec Bowl (Division III All-Star Game in Mexico). Visconti still ranks second in school history in completions and attempts while sitting third in both passing yards and touchdowns. Following graduation, Visconti played two seasons in the Arena Football League and threw league-record seven touchdowns in one half.

Softball

The Wolverines, under the leadership of first-year head coach Juli Greep, completed one of the largest turnarounds in all of NCAA Division III by going 15-20-1 in 2012. After winning just four games the previous season, Wesley matched that total just eight games into the season after a 6-3 victory over Juniata College in Myrtle Beach, S.C. In mid-March, the Wolverines went on a season-long, six-game winning streak, scoring at least 12 runs in each game and outscoring their opponents 8625. Among the standouts were First Team All-CAC and All-Region selection Ashlyn Booth and leadoff hitter Jessica Barranco, who led the Capital Athletic Conference with 20 stolen bases while hitting a teamhigh .398. The three-person pitching staff, which consisted of two freshmen and a junior, also recorded an earned run average under four.

Baseball

It was a banner season for the Wolverines as first-year head coach Bret Underwood led the team to a program record 31 victories, three wins over nationally ranked teams, and the top seed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference South Playoffs. Wesley won six of its first seven games of the year, including a victory over No. 6 Salisbury, and finished the season 9-9 in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Wolverines placed a league

record five players on the All-Conference team, and shortstop Rob Benedict became the first player in school history to be named the CAC Player of the Year. Righthander DJ Keckler also was a first team selection, as well as becoming Wesley’s all-time leader in innings pitched, shutouts and earned run average. Despite leading the league with a .425 batting average and 54 RBIs, first baseman Geoff Kimmel, who played in a school record 165 games, was named second team all-conference, as were southpaw Jordan Lozzi and outfielder Jon Carlson. Benedict, Keckler, Kimmel and Carlson also earned All-Region recognition by several publications.

Golf

The 2012 Wesley College golf team won its third Capital Athletic Conference title in the five-year history of the tournament, which was held at Wild Quail Golf & Country Club in Wyoming, Del. After being the only player under par on the first day of the conference championship, All-Region honoree Robert Ehrhardt won the individual title by seven strokes with a CAC record 145. He was subsequently named the CAC Player of the Year, while freshman Cody Pestun shared CoRookie of the Year honors after tying for third place.

Also earning All-Conference accolades was Clayton Bunting, who placed sixth overall, and head coach Rick McCall, who shared Co-Coach of the Year honors.

Tennis

Under first-year head coach Gail Hill, Wesley’s men’s tennis team opened the season with three straight victories, including a thumping of Division I MarylandEastern Shore, and finished the season 4-7 overall.

Kevin Mangini was named the team’s MVP after recording a 6-5 singles record, while going 5-6 in doubles play. On the women’s side, Caitlin Grinstead earned MVP honors after playing in the top position in both singles and doubles.

Women’s Lacrosse

The 2012 edition of the Wesley College women’s lacrosse team matched its second-best win total in program history with eight victories this season. In just her third season at the helm, head coach Debbie Windett became Wesley’s all-time winningest coach after a dramatic come-from-behind 14-13 victory at Mount St. Vincent on April 1. Wesley got out to a 3-2 record, including 3-0 at home, thanks in large part to senior Alyssa Prudente, who led the Capital Athletic Conference in points and goals scored. She also shattered every Wolverine record for single game, season and career. Prudente was later named Second Team All-CAC, becoming just the second Wolverine to be honored by the conference.

Men’s Lacrosse

Playing in arguably the toughest conference in the nation, as well as suffering several injuries to key players, the Wolverines won just two games in 2012, with both coming against Capital Athletic Conference rivals – Hood and Frostburg. After losing two of its leading scorers to graduation and a third midseason, Wesley was led offensively by sophomore Tim Dougherty, who tallied a team-high 13 assists and 25 points. Leading the team in goals was senior Scott Brozey with 19 and junior Patrick Lipari with 17. Defensive midfielder and team captain Dan Tryon was named the team’s MVP.

Track & Field

Sophomore sprinter/hurdler Matt Bundy became the most decorated Wolverine track & field athlete ever after qualifying for the NCAA National Championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. After a fall in the indoor season at Nationals, Bundy shattered his own school record in the 110m hurdles at Nationals during the preliminaries and went on to finish fourth overall, earning All-America recognition. Prior to Nationals in the spring, Bundy was named the Capital Athletic Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the gold in both the 110m hurdles and 200m dash while earning the silver in the 100m dash. He also won the 110m hurdles at the ECAC Outdoor Track Championships. Including Bundy’s five school records this season, eight other men’s program marks were also set this season. On the women’s side, Tamisha Thomas was named First Team All-CAC after winning the 100m hurdles for the second straight season and setting a school record. In the 2011-12 season, four women’s indoor school records were broken while six outdoor records went down.

His grandson just returned from a church mission to Guatemala building furniture and is now working as a pool lifeguard. He will be a senior at Syosset High School this fall.

One of his granddaughters, a second year art student at Adelphi University, is a counselor at the 4H camp in Riverhead, Long Island and received her Girl Scout “Gold Award” this year.

His other granddaughter, who is entering her second year at Penn State, is working for the Town of Oyster Bay in Long Island this summer. He writes, “Not necessarily retired, I was just named president of our homeowners association here in Cutchogue, Long Island and I still serve as our Parks Commissioner.

Carol and I will celebrate our 54th wedding anniversary in September.

Sorry to have missed a Wesley Alumni get-together in West Islip earlier this year.”

Class of ’58 Susan (Kempf) Taylor wrote in to share that on September 2, she had the pleasure of meeting up with 2 friends from Wesley, Ed Moore and Judy (Woodward) McCormick while visiting her brother in West Hollywood, CA. Ed lives in San Clemente while Judy lives in Huntington Beach. Susan writes, “Ed and I decided that we would each go about halfway and meet on Judy's home turf. What fun we had talking about the ‘good old days’ of Wesley Junior College. Ed had brought his yearbook, so we thumbed through the pages and found things to talk about on each page! We enjoyed a leisurely lunch at a place called Dukes which overlooks the beach and the Pacific Ocean.” Susan has been coming back for Wesley’s Homecoming annually, and Ed and Judy will also try to make it back to Wesley for their class’s 55th next year.

Edward P. Moore has recently written and published a book. It is titled “Out of Da Nang” and details the obstacles of becoming a pilot in the Marine Corps and flying UH34D Sikorsky choppers in Vietnam combat. It is a fictional novel but based on real life experiences. Edward served one tour

of duty as a pilot in Vietnam and was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross and Vietnamese Cross of Valor for his role in one particular mission out of Da Nang. Ten percent of all profits of the book will be donated to Wounded Warriors and similar organizations to support veterans.

Class of ’60

Ted and Marilyn (Hopen) Simpler, Bruce and Ginni (Grabinski) McNally, Bill and Barbara (Swank) McNamee, and Scotty and Barbara (Peterson) Quillen had a luncheon in Sebring, FL last March. They all met at Wesley when it was a two year college and have fond memories of Wesley.

Two couples will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this year and the other two couples will celebrate theirs next year. At their gathering in Florida, they planned to meet again in Lewes, DE in summer 2012.

John Mahaffey and his wife Judy moved to Charlotte, NC in 2008 to be closer to their children, Jennifer and Jack, and grandchildren Carson and Kennedy.

John retired in December after 37+ years with Kodak, where he spent the past 18 years managing strategic accounts for the imaging specialty division. Judy retired after 16+ years teaching special education in Rochester, NY. John writes, “Life after Kodak includes executive board member for the BSA-MCC Council and Rotary Club of CLT. We thought we would have lots of extra time, but the grandkids seem to be keeping us busy.”

Class of ’73 Class of ’61 Sue (Rathmell) Daino sadly reports that her husband Grant passed away March 15. They were married for 44 years. She writes, “His legs just buckled one night when he walking to the living room to watch TV, and he broke both tibias and fibulas. He had to be very careful all the time not to fall. His legs were not always that strong due to his having Polio when he was 16.”

Sue had known her husband since she was 12. He and her older brother palled around when they were teenagers.

Upon his swearing in at the July 18 Capital School Board meeting, Lindell, at age 31, is the third youngest elected board member currently serving in Delaware. Before his term expires in 2017, his goals include increasing fiscal transparency between the district and taxpayers to ensure that taxpayer dollars are being used effectively and efficiently for the benefit of all students in the school district. He also wants to increase district partnerships with area colleges, including Wesley, to better serve all students attending schools in the Capital School District.

Class of ’94 Chris Furrule has recently been appointed to the role of managing partner of two services firms known as Creative Financial Group of New Jersey, where he will provide careful, well-rounded financial strategies for his clients. New England Financial has named Chris’ firm the 2011 Firm of the Year. He resides in New Jersey with his wife and three children.

Class of ’95 Marshall and Amanda M’06 Downes are proud to announce the birth of their first child. Their daughter, Clara Charlotte Downes, was born January 18. Clara weighed 6 lbs., 14 oz. and measured 20 inches long. The family celebrated Clara’s Christening on May 13 -Mother’s Day. Amanda is the director of alumni relations at Wesley and Marshall is employed by the State of Delaware and manages technology for a school district.

Class of ’06 Jessica Raymond is pleased to report that after much studying, she completed her requirements to become a Certified Public Accountant and as of January, is officially a CPA. She has been working at Raymond F. Book & Associates for the past five years and loves it. Tamara (Cohen) Hartzell and her husband Shane Hartzell ’02 proudly announce the birth of their son, Caden Connor Hartzell. He was born on May 2 and weighed 6 lbs., 5 oz. and was 20 inches long.

Class of ’07 Samantha Feld recently graduated from Jefferson Medical College with her MD and started her residency in June.

Class of ’09 Class of ’05 Matt Lindell won a four-way race for a seat on the Capital School District Board of Education in May. His total votes outnumbered the other three candidates vote totals combined, which included an incumbent. Class of ’11 After graduating with a bachelor's degree in media arts in May 2011, Christopher Agar is now working at Wesley College’s Office of Institutional Advancement as a communications assistant.

Kelly Morgan had an opportunity to use her media arts degree from Wesley to work as a photography assistant on a short term assignment with the magazine True Story.

Currently she is working as a bank teller at Beneficial Bank.

Jesse Trump completed his internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and has now moved back up to Columbia University. His internship at UAB led to another internship he recently started, working at the James J. Peters Veterans Medical Research Division via the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He will have his requirements for Columbia completed at the end of this semester and currently has a job offer for a four month position at Cornell University to potentially work there for the spring semester. He is also in the process of exploring and planning to apply to Ph.D. programs.
