Commencement 2009 was an extraordinary day. Although rain was predicted, the sun was bright and the Dashiell Amphitheater was a glorious location for the ceremony. In addition, it was a remarkable occasion to have Senior U.S. Senator Mr. Tom Carper and Senator Kaufman congratulate each graduate as he or she walked across the stage to receive a diploma. There are few locations in which this level of close relationship exists and I know that each graduate will remember that day for years to come.

As you complete your summer plans and prepare for the season ahead, Wesley also is preparing for a grand academic year. Although final numbers are not yet known, Wesley is attracting one of the largest entering classes in the 136-year history of the College. More than 650 new students are beginning classes this fall, and the overall fall enrollment, including the New Castle campus, will be very strong.

This issue of Wesley magazine also identifies and celebrates alumni and friends who have supported Wesley financially. Your gifts enable us to implement new ways for the College to flourish.

From Ireland to Italy, Wesley Travels the World

Saint Augustine once said, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” Following this philosophy, Professor of History Dr .

S us anne Fox has been coordinating trips abroad to Ireland and Italy for the Wesley community the past nine years, in hopes that these experiences start a new chapter in the lives of students, faculty, staff and alumni.

“We see in our students a new maturity. They become very proud for experiencing these cultures on their own. For many of them, it’s the beginning of their love for travel. They want to continue to travel and that’s really why we do it,” said Fox. In conjunction with their coursework, students traveling abroad are given a chance to witness firsthand the people and places they have read about and discussed in class. “Rome was more spectacular in person than what I

imagined,” said C h r i s B i rc h ’ 0 7 .

While a Wesley student and later an alumnus, Birch traveled with Fox and Professor of History F r a n k G r e g o r y .

His first venture abroad was on the 2005 trip to Ireland. Birch returned with a bright new perspective of the world. “Stepping outside the fast-paced American culture for about ten days was refreshing and showed me that the world is a fascinating place to explore.”

One key advantage to traveling with the Wesley College group is having a worry-free experience, with all the

details covered within an affordable package price. “Dr. Fox was always very serious about our safety,” said Katie M e n e f e e ’ 0 8 . On the various trips, the faculty and students have gotten to know their informative guides and trust that they will escort them safely to all the best locations. Fox and Gregory, along with numerous chaperones, are pleased to report that they have never left a person behind. “I’m just amazed at how smoothly the trips go. People get along, they’re where they should be, and they’re attentive to the guides. I find it to be a very pleasant experience for all,” Fox expressed.

The students, alumni and faculty that have participated in these trips know that the most priceless benefit is experiencing a cultural education with fellow members of the Wesley community. Fox strongly encourages alumni, the least represented group in past trips, to come along for the journey. “I would love to have more alumni. It’s neat for them to see the students here at Wesley now, and it’s a fairly inexpensive way for them to travel,” said Fox. During spring break in February 2010, another group will travel to Italy to visit the areas of Rome, Naples, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.

Trash to Treasure Campus Cleanout Yields Sizable Bounty for Local Charities Junior Katelyn Cooper, Wesley Chaplain Dr. Mark Pruett-Barnett and Sophomore Carllistis Obeng are ready to help with the collection process.

Students, faculty and staff of Wesley College are continually finding more ways to be involved with the community through service projects. As this year’s spring semester came to a close, a campus cleanup and giveaway project was initiated to allow Wesley students to donate usable items that would typically be thrown away and could instead be given to local charities. Within the span of a week, an estimated $10,000 worth of furniture, appliances, food and household items were collected from residence halls and contributed to Goodwill and Catholic Charities.

Ea rlene T olso n and Ev e l y n War d , two employees from the Aramark Housekeeping staff at Wesley, had noticed over the years that students leaving the campus for the summer threw out many things that could be put to good use for families in need. With the College’s commitment to service and the recent decline of the economy in mind, they talked to Susan Joh n s t o n , wife of Wesley P r e s i d e n t Dr. Willi am John s t o n , about the wasteful tendencies of students and what could be done differently this year to turn the waste into donations that would help the surrounding community in today’s difficult times.

With the help of Wesley Chaplain D r . Ma r k PruettDean of Students Ma r y - A l i c e Oz e c hos ki and Head of Facilities C h uck A r t h u r , a plan was put into action for a campus cleanout and giveaway program to benefit others less fortunate. “Wesley College sits on the border of an area in town with a huge economic need. By sharing our resources with the community, we live our values and mission,” Ozechoski noted.

A few weeks before exams, the cleanout program was promoted around campus through notices and emails, and volunteers were recruited to help with the efforts. Students were asked to save items that they might normally throw out at the end of the year and donate them for this project.

Pruett-Barnett pointed out that convenience for students was critical to making this a successful endeavor. Collection bins were placed in the lobby of each of the residence halls, allowing students to easily drop items off while packing up belongings in their rooms and before leaving for the summer.

The collection process began slowly, since most students were consumed with final exams and had not yet packed up to go home in the first few days of the week. “But when

Thursday and Friday nights came around, we got a lot of stuff donated,” Pruett-Barnett said. A variety of items, from canned goods and clothing to rugs and microwaves, were among the donations distributed to various charities and second-hand stores around the area.

“I was really happy to be a part of this and help us all be stewards of God’s gifts that are given to us and make sure they can still be used,” Pruett-Barnett commented. He noted that in the midst of the rush to head home, students seemed glad to help with the program by donating things they no longer needed.

Ozechoski not only helped to implement the campus cleanout program during the last week of school, but also found an opportunity to ramp up donations to the next level.

Since the College already had plans to replace the furniture in certain buildings during the month of June, she saw this as an opportunity to give even more to those in need. “We knew we were going to refurbish Williams [Residence Hall] and had ordered new beds, wardrobes, desks and chairs for 123 students. It seemed like a good way to help the community and recycle used but still usable furniture,” Ozechoski remarked.

Wesley’s football team took on the massive job of clearing out Williams Hall, which entailed moving 300 pound wardrobes from the third floor. These and other volunteers helped sort the furniture and determine what was reusable, then loaded items into a U-haul truck to take to the charities. “I took a load up to Wilmington, a load to Goodwill on Route 13 and another three quarters of a load to the Goodwill on Route 8. This stuff was still good. It wasn’t junk,” Pruett-Barnett remarked. “We were really good about not passing on junk to people who need stuff.”

The combined efforts of Pruett-Barnett, the Aramark Housekeeping and Facilities staff, the football team, staff members from Student Life and Security, and the students that donated items made this first time campus project a success. “We are all aware of the economic realities we are facing. A family receiving a bunk bed or food or clothing that would have otherwise been thrown away is what the College as members of the Dover community ought to be doing,” Ozechoski remarked.

Both Pruett-Barnett and Ozechoski agree that since this type of service project is so closely aligned with the mission and goals of the College, it will be continued as an annual program on campus, and they hope to get even more individuals involved next year. Ozechoski summarized, “I hope students understand that when you are inclined to throw away perfectly good, usable food, clothing and appliances, the better thing to do is to donate them…I hope they see that their unwanted items can have a huge impact on a family and that in giving, they receive.” W

Intramurals Revamped

During the Spring 2009 semester, Wesley students had the opportunity to become involved in a newly structured intramural sports program under the direction of the Office of Student Life. As a means for community building, healthy physical exercise and socializing, the program has been revamped and strongly marketed to attract greater student participation. “Under the direction of De an Oz ech o s k i, we feel strongly that intramurals belong in student life because they are such an important way for students to get involved, build interpersonal relationships, build leadership skills and demonstrate positive sportsmanship,” Am a nd a Kinkade , coordinator of student life, commented. “We want to take the program to the next level and make it something really fun and competitive,” she continued.

The program offers students the chance to play sports regardless of their athletic ability or work schedule.

“We have three major goals for this program: to increase student wellness, to build community amongst participants and fans, and to have some fun, competitive pride,” Kinkade remarked. She pointed out that it also gives students an opportunity to get involved with peers and make new friends while exercising together on a team. As the program has grown, the number of fans has grown and more people come out and cheer for friends. “This is something that is so important given our background as a United Methodist affiliated institution,” Kinkade noted. “The emphasis on civility, sportsmanship and kindness is something that builds good character within the students participating.”

Kinkade described the emphasis placed on community building within the program for resident and commuter students alike. She explained that residential students build community pride by putting together teams in their residence halls. Residents also enjoy seeing their resident directors in a different role when they participate or cheer for the teams in their hall. Commuters get a chance to meet peers and feel connected with Wesley as they feel more comfortable on

campus and make it their “second home.” “It gives them the opportunity to know a wide variety of students that they might not see in class, eating in the dining hall or just hanging out on campus,” Kinkade explained.

Along with the benefits of socializing and staying physically fit, the program presents the opportunity for students to train as officials and get experience in this capacity during the actual games on campus. Kinkade noted that although any student can apply to be an official, many of the students who want the position are either sports management or exercise science majors, or student athletes wanting to better understand the logistics of the games.

“Currently our two student managers are a sports management major and a physical education major. They have taken the program to the next level while gaining experience in their future field of work,” she commented.

The Office of Student Life already has organized an intramural program schedule for the upcoming academic year. “We will have five sport leagues and several one day tournaments,” Kinkade said. The five sports will include kickball, volleyball, dodgeball, indoor soccer and flag football. The Student Life staff expects some students to participate in all five sports throughout the year and other individuals to join for a particular sport they want to play.

As for future programming, Kinkade mentioned the possibility of “extramurals, where Wesley’s championship team would compete with other championship teams from local colleges.” Other thoughts include incorporating nontraditional games, such as four square tournaments in front of Carpenter Hall, cornhole competitions and more. Kinkade is optimistic that the intramural program will draw in the new, first-year Wesley students and help them get a jumpstart on getting involved on campus and making new friends.

Kinkade summarized, “The future of this program is bright and will provide all students with the opportunity to just be a Wolverine and have some fun!” W

A Fresh Face

Renovation Projects at Wesley Feature New Furniture and Equipment for Buildings providing quality contract furniture to schools and universities. In addition, Wesley’s bookstore, operated by Barnes and Noble, recently received an estimated $45,000 make-over.

Responding to the need for more science equipment and better lab space, the College recently completed restoration on an existing organic chemistry laboratory. Built in the 1960s, the science lab located in Cannon Hall needed extensive remodeling according to College officials. The project included new mechanical, electrical, gas and plumbing systems as well as new flooring, wall finishes, a barrier-free safety station, chemical fume hoods, storage cabinets and nine student workstations, one of which was made to be handicap-accessible. D r . Ma lcolm J. D’ S o u za , a Wesley chemistry professor, said the upgrades will increase the number of students who wish to participate in undergraduate research. Funding for the project was obtained through an IDeA grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and administered through the Delaware Biotechnology Institute to help further undergraduate chemistry research on Wesley’s campus. The end of a school year on a college or university campus usually signals the start of many construction projects.

At Wesley College, a new renovation season began just as the spring semester came to a close. Several campus buildings underwent facelifts this summer, with major improvements to several classrooms and residence halls.

When students return to the College in the fall, one change they will notice is a freshly painted building with brand new furniture. Williams Hall, a 23,000 square-foot residence hall for first and second-year students, will have two of everything in each room: extra long beds, wardrobe units, desks and dressers. According to K e v i n Hansb ury , director of residence life at Wesley, the renovation project was an important investment to allow the College to meet the needs of its students. “I think the furniture looks great and it enhances the feel of the residence hall,” he said.

In the H.B. du Pont College Center, student lounges were upgraded with new sofas, tables and chairs. Ma r y A l ic e Oz e c h o sk i , dean of students, stated that the renovations to the 96,000 square-foot College Center originated from student feedback, indicating the need for more leisure space on campus.

“Students were requesting more comfortable areas so that they could hang out longer in the College Center after classes and during the evenings,” she said.

The projects in Williams Hall and the College Center came with a price tag of $250,000.

LIVE from Wesley First Ever Professional Recording Session for Music Ensemble

Over the course of two evenings in March, Wesley’s Contemporary Music Ensemble opened a new chapter in the music program’s history with the group’s first professional recording at the Schwartz Center for the Arts. This undertaking was initiated by Assistant Professor of Music Dr . Dav i d Lag anell a , who wanted to document the hard work of the students in the music program and also provide them with proof of their own progression.

Upon coming to Wesley as a new professor several years ago, Laganella designed the credit-bearing Contemporary Music Ensemble course to help students discipline themselves to play a variety of music in a professional manner and in a group setting.

D r. Jeffrey G ibso n , associate professor of English and an active member of the Ensemble, noted that Laganella sets high expectations for the members “despite the extra work the Ensemble means for him.” Gibson continued, “It’s clear Dr. Laganella

enjoys watching his students learn and grow as musicians, and he wants them to enjoy it as well. He doesn’t expect the members to be brilliant musicians (or I’d certainly be out). He knows they’re all at different skill levels and does his best to put together arrangements that work for all involved. As a result, the Ensemble has been perhaps the most successful fine arts program at Wesley in recent years.”

Student musician Sa m a n t ha S i m ps on expressed a similar sentiment in regard to the rigor of the course as well as Laganella’s devotion to the group. “While this course is a tremendous amount of fun, his attitude helps to keep us on our toes by reminding us that it is also hard work that should be taken seriously. He demands the best out of his students, and pushes them to achieve their full potential.” She added, “Dr. Laganella is a great asset to the music department because of his determination and his drive. He is helping to turn the music

department into a serious field of study at Wesley.”

by Eugene Laws, engineer of Equal Loudness Studios, a mobile recording studio. The set list was comprised of a mixture of jazz and pop songs, including “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” by Weather Report, “Night and Day”

by Neil Young, “Moondance” by Van Morrison and “Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar. The students and faculty that took part in the recording are listed in the chart to the right. Being a part of a professional music recording is a rare treat that most music students do not get the chance to enjoy and one that Wesley’s Ensemble members will not soon forget. “Getting the opportunity to record was an amazing experience, not to mention a bit of an ego boost for all of us. After all, this is what ‘real’ musicians do!” Simpson expressed.

the recording over the summer. While it will not be for sale, copies will be available in Spring 2010 for anyone within the Wesley community that is interested. He intends for this first recording to be a tool to help further promote the music department and build on its success. He also plans for the Contemporary Music Ensemble to make a recording every two academic years, so that all the students involved in the program have a chance to participate in the studio.

Simpson said, “For a musician, there is no substitute for performing live, and there are few experiences that compare to the thrill that goes along with this particular event. Being a part of the Contemporary Music Ensemble has been one of the highlights of my experience at Wesley College.” W

Bon Appetit Dishing Up New Events for Alumni

A lumni got a taste of some new event programming this year as the Office of Institutional Advancement hosted gatherings for foodies and arts lovers alike. On May 30, graduates of Wesley New Castle assembled at Celebrity Kitchens in Wilmington, Delaware for a unique, interactive dining experience. Chef Scott Clarke, a graduate of the Restaurant School in Philadelphia, instructor of culinary programs for a local school district and owner of a private catering company, demonstrated his cooking talents with the Wesley group and prepared a delicious three course luncheon.

While a couple guests had the opportunity to take part in the meal preparation, all attendees took home some valuable cooking tips from the experienced chef. Alumni were provided recipes for all the prepared dishes and also received a Wesley souvenir from the Office of Institutional Advancement.

On June 19, alumni were treated to dinner and a show in historic Ardentown, Delaware. As the only non-profit, professional, dinner theatre in the entire country, The New

Candlelight Dinner Theatre site has roots that date back to the 1930s when it was a popular summer stock venue.

Guests enjoyed a pre-performance buffet and dining with fellow Wesley alumni and friends. Following dinner was a lively performance of Oklahoma!

“It was a delightful evening! It would be fun to see other classmates from the 50s and I encourage them to join in on upcoming events,” said Muriel Bacon wilson ’54 .

Go Forth, Good Luck Wesley College Awards Nearly 400 Diplomas During the 2008-09 Academic Year Commencement Speaker U.S. Senator Edward Kaufman

Through the end of the spring 2009 semester, Delaware’s oldest private college conferred a total of 397 degrees. During the most recent Commencement exercises, 237 students who collectively completed 24 associate, 142 baccalaureate, 49 nursing and 22 master’s degrees were recognized for their academic achievements and awarded their Wesley diplomas.

Special guests at Commencement included United States Senate members Thomas R. Carper and Edward E. Kaufman.

Both were invited by the College to deliver greetings and address the Wesley students. Senator Carper acknowledged the graduates’ hard work and noted the future possibilities that await them. “You’ll have the opportunity to provide leadership in businesses, schools and government. Go forth, good luck, serve us well and congratulations,” he said.

Senator Kaufman delivered the Commencement address and joked with the graduating class. “I’ve always felt that the best line on Commencement brevity was Adlai Stevenson’s:

Upon conferring the degrees and awarding the diplomas, Wesley President D r . W i l l ia m J o h n s t o n concluded by saying, “It’s my duty to remind each of you that this achievement we celebrate today did not happen in a vacuum. It happened with the love, guidance, support and inspiration of others along the journey.”

Also during the ceremony, details of a special endowed scholarship fund were released to graduates and guests.

Johnston announced that Wesley’s Student Government Association pledged a gift of $2,000 towards a $10,000 scholarship fund in honor of A n d r ew G e y e r — a Wesley College senior who was killed by a suspected drunk driver in February. “Through the help of many people and the Student Government Association, the Andrew Joseph Geyer Endowed Scholarship Fund has been established in perpetuity,” he said. The scholarship fund will be used to support future Wesley students. W

Making Room for 2013 Wesley Welcomes the Largest Freshman Class to Date

I n A ugust Wesley will welcome to their new home the class of 2013, one of the largest groups of incoming freshmen in the history of the College.

As part of the annual routine leading up to the new student matriculation, the Wesley administration and the various campus departments set a goal — to help the Wesley community grow with the enrollment of a substantial freshman class.

Like a family organizing for a summer vacation, the planning begins early. Traditionally, once the fall semester starts, College administrators and the Office of Admissions determine a desired number of applications and admitted students to ultimately meet a realistic enrollment objective for the following year. As Wesley is a heavily tuition-driven institution, there are many variables to assess, including tuition dollars and other revenue versus the various costs of education 12

and student support as well as availability of campus housing and the ratio of faculty and academic support staff to students.

The planning phase does not end there, however. Instead, a year-long journey is just beginning. Several steps are put into place and carried out over the next 12 months in order to ensure that enrollment goals will be met.

Despite the uncertainties of our nation’s economy, Wesley’s Office of Admissions has intensified recruitment efforts within the past year. In fact, the usual steps taken to attain enrollment goals were taken to a whole new level.

Three new admissions counselors were hired as of September 1, 2008. The two seasoned counselors invested valuable time and energy to prepare the incoming staff for the recruitment process. “Travel to high schools as well as college and transfer fairs was increased, allowing our office to expand

its recruitment efforts and to market Wesley College directly and more personally to students, parents and high school counselors where they live,” explained Director of Undergraduate Admissions A r t h u r Jac o bs . The Office of Admissions also used resources such as the College Board to identify applicant prospects among high school juniors and seniors. Certain criteria, such as students’ geographic area, grade point average, test scores, potential academic interests and indicated preferences for college type and location, helped hone the search process in order to ultimately find ideal matches between students and Wesley College.

Many prospective applicants were then mailed introductory information and a brand new visitor’s guide to learn more about Wesley. “Before these students began their senior year, we had sent out information to five

thousand of them,” informed Dean of Enrollment Management B i l l F irman . Admissions staff members put in countless hours in the evenings and on weekends to contact students, answer questions, set up campus visits and conduct interviews in order to effectively make that personal connection between the College and the prospective student and his or her family.

The results of the Admissions team’s diligent efforts were already evident at Wesley’s very first open house on October 4, 2008. A record number of prospective students and their families attended this and the next two open house events that followed. In addition, a record number of students, with their parents, made personal campus visits during the school year.

For many college-bound students, the tour of the campus and exposure to the college atmosphere is a critical step in determining if a school will be a good fit for them. That means there is all the more reason for the Wesley family to make a good first impression.

The College’s President, Dr . W i l l ia m Johnston , stated, “It is our duty to invite prospective students to the door.

The rest of the campus has to invite them in to be a part of the community.”

A new program structure for Wesley open houses recently implemented by the Office of Admissions has proven to be an effective vehicle to attract prospective students to Wesley. Firman commented, “The message students got through tours and open houses was that we are an interactive college and have a positive energy.” President Johnston also noted the outstanding efforts put forth by the entire Wesley community. “The campus as a whole — faculty, staff, maintenance, food services — has gone out of their way

to engage and welcome prospective families,” he commended.

As any college or university typically experiences what could be called the “summer melt” in which confirmed students make last minute changes to their college plans before the fall semester begins, Wesley hopes to minimize this effect. One way is to continue outreach to students regarding financial aid packages and scholarship opportunities.

In addition, a strong New Student Orientation program coordinated by the Office of Student Life has helped further familiarize incoming students and their parents with the Wesley community. From an institutional standpoint, the effectiveness of Orientation has helped solidify students’ decisions to enroll at Wesley and boosted enthusiasm for their new home-away-from-home.

program August 19-23. Activities for this Continuing Orientation programming will be geared towards the theme of perseverance, respect, integrity, dedication and excellence (PRIDE).

Participants have been enthusiastic about the Orientation programming they have experienced thus far. Exit surveys showed that 98% of the students rated the June Orientation day as Good or Excellent (63.1% Excellent/34.9% Good). Fisher commented, “The program has been received very highly from parents and students who have attended. It has been a team effort from many offices and departments across campus and we could not have been successful without the dedication of the numerous faculty and staff members here at Wesley College. They have made all the difference in this experience!”

At the same time, the College feels confident that the programming will effectively help students integrate into campus life and ultimately, will have many positive benefits for the campus community as a whole. “We believe that Orientation engages students in the Wesley College experience and it provides a foundation to become successful graduates,” said MaryA l i c e Oz e c h o sk i , dean of students.

As for the College’s enrollment goals and the interests of the incoming class, the outlook is very positive. The previously set milestone of 615 freshmen will most likely be surpassed this fall. “The College is ready to go to the next level and we are just thrilled,” Firman expressed. Due to the united efforts and contributions across the Wesley campus, the College eagerly awaits the forthcoming frenzy of activity in late August and will embrace with open arms the newest members of the family. “The New Student Orientation program is purposeful in that the oneday June sessions prepare incoming students (both freshmen and transfers) and parents to arrive in August,” said Beth Fisher , director of student activities. This program not only aims to make the sometimes overwhelming first-year experience a bit more manageable, but also allows new students to build meaningful relationships with members of the campus community. Profile: Richard gordon]

50 Years of Excellence Richard Gordon ’59 Emphasizes the Importance of His Education at Wesley “Those were pretty trying days at Wesley, particularly in the financial situation of the College, but the entire community was there to support Wesley and that shows even today,” Ri c har d G o r d o n ’ 5 9 remarked about his time on campus. Gordon came to what was then Wesley Junior College after spending a year at Duke University. For Gordon, Wesley was not just a place of education, but one that changed him for the better and was an important stepping stone in his life’s journey.

Growing up in Frederica, Delaware, Gordon attended Caesar Rodney High School and then moved onto Duke University. After a year of school at Duke, Gordon realized “it wasn’t my cup of tea.” He signed up for the volunteer draft, although remembers being told he would never be drafted.

Upon returning to Delaware from Duke, Gordon’s family adamantly insisted he go back to school, compelling him to enroll at Wesley. While attending his first semester there, he received orders that he was to be drafted and left school to serve two years with the United States Army. Once discharged, Gordon returned to Wesley in September 1957 to study liberal arts.

That year was a critical time both for Gordon, experiencing a new setting and adjusting to civilian life, and Wesley as an institution, almost closing its doors on June 15, 1957. Just one year prior, financial problems and dissatisfaction from the Methodists of the Peninsula Conference threatened the future of the institution. Fortunately, the Board of Trustees received approval from Bishop Oxnam to continue operations and President Slaybaugh announced the rousing efforts to save Wesley. These included a $10,000 challenge fund started by students, with $6,000 already raised with the help of parents and others; the creation of an Alumni Association corporation to raise additional funds among graduates and friends of the College; and financial sacrifices by faculty. Remembering the difficulties Wesley faced, Gordon pointed out the importance of “the camaraderie of the student body, faculty, Board of Trustees and the administration” at that time. He explained, “There were special things going on in and around the area of Wesley to help support the College…it became a family affair.”

As College alumni, students, trustees, staff and friends pooled resources with the Peninsula Conference and local government and community leaders to secure funds for a $1.5 million dollar redevelopment program for the institution, Gordon and his classmates were fortunate to be preparing for an upcoming academic year at the revived school. At this turning point for Wesley, the campus grew with the addition of several new buildings and a boost in enrollment over the next couple years. At the same time, the small class sizes and individual attention that Gordon remembers being given in his classes remained consistent characteristics of the College that still exist today.

“We were a close knit group and the communication was good in both ways. If we needed help, we got it. And if the professors needed something from us, they got what they needed,” Gordon explained. He observed how passionate Wesley professors were about their students’ education and success. “The teachers really cared. They were interested in you and your education,” he said. He remembers the general feeling on campus that each individual was a member of the family that existed there, unlike what he had experienced at a larger university. He reminisced, “You just felt a part of everything. You felt a part of the school just by walking down the hall. That surprised me to see.” Despite being a commuter student, Gordon joined his peers in enjoying many campus sporting events, dances and other student activities throughout the year.

For Gordon, Wesley successfully instilled a new desire for education that he did not have before. “It certainly changed my outlook on college,” he said. “It made me want to get a degree and finish my education.” After graduating from Wesley, he studied government and public administration at American University and after earning his degree there, moved down to Bristol, Virginia with his first wife.

Gordon found his calling while living there and became heavily involved with his community. From 1962 to 1972, he was a member of the Bristol Junior Chamber of Commerce, and in 1969 he was awarded the Outstanding Young Man of the Year award for his participation in numerous community groups and organizations. In 1974, he ran for city council and received the most votes among his 13 competitors. He ran for

re-election in 1978 and again won, convincing the city council to elect him as mayor the following year.

During his term as mayor, Gordon was appointed to the Mount Roger’s Planning District Commission, a group which aided in numerous planning projects, from industrialization to parks, for an eight county area and two independent

Henry and her eight-year-old twin girls Kristina and Diana. Gordon also enjoys playing tennis as well as his involvement with the Central Presbyterian Church and the men’s bible study group he attends weekly.

From 1978 to 1994, Gordon served on the Commission in various roles, acting as chairman at one point. “We were involved with a lot of projects like water and sewer plans and had to work with the state and federal levels to attain the funds needed for the plans,” Gordon explained. During his time on the Commission, the group was instrumental in helping to modernize that area of rural Virginia with new roads and industrial parks, and move its economy from agricultural to industrial production. “Some of the parks have flourished over the past eight to ten years because of the continued support that we initially got,” Gordon stated.

Along with his community involvement, Gordon worked for the Electrolux Corporation for 29½ years as a purchasing agent. Remarried in November 2007 and now living in Bristol, Tennessee as a retired member of the community, he

Gordon recalled a trip he made to Wesley’s campus four years ago and his overall amazement at the sight of his alma mater. He said, “It is remarkable to see what has happened at Wesley…the people at Wesley now should really have pride in what has been done around the campus such as building renovations and the College Center.” Since he now finds it more difficult to travel, he will be unable to return for his 50th class reunion but did advise his classmates, “If you can make the trip or live in the area, I would certainly encourage you to get up and go, not only to see your classmates, but to see the outstanding Wesley campus that most won’t recognize if they haven’t seen it in years.”

Gordon underscores the significance of education in today’s world and Wesley’s niche as a small, private liberal arts college. He said, “The school needs to remain a vibrant part of the community, and it needs the support of alums to continue. Whether it is monetarily or to attend functions at the College, go there and support Wesley.” With his experience in public service having shown him the importance of community support for educational institutions, he believes that local residents in a college town also should participate as much as possible and show their support “because as the college grows, the area around it will grow with it.” He continued, “It is important to see what has been done and what can be done to enhance the world that these young people are growing up in today.”

Wesley College will forever be significant in Gordon’s life, not only because of the drive for education he developed there, but also the valuable experiences he had. “Wesley taught me that camaraderie and association with a group of people which I later used in my career to get a job done. This is what life is all about. It’s a stepping stone; each level in your life hopefully prepares you for a better life ahead.” W

All for One and One for All The “Three Musketeers” Reflect on Their Lifelong Bond As years pass, change is inevitable for both the College as well as its graduates. However, for many former students who called Wesley home, the memories created on campus have endured the test of time. For a particular group of alumni from the Class of 1959, the 50th anniversary of their Wesley graduation is quickly approaching. Three members of the class formerly known as the “Three Musketeers”— Sara “ Sal l y ” Sara “Sally” (Kendrick) (Kendri ck) Cavana g h , Cavanagh R ovaldia “Val” (Me g e e )

and Edn a “Ed i e ” ( W h i t t l e ) Ro g e r s — have planned to make the trip back to Wesley’s campus this October, as they have every five years, to relive a time in each of their lives when they not only found each other but also found themselves.

“I didn’t have a career objective or plan,” said Hyde.

“However once I arrived at Wesley, I began to think seriously about my education and future.”

Hyde came to Wesley from Frankford, Delaware. Her older sister Edith had attended the College, so she knew the campus well. Never having been away from home, she was itching to meet new friends and have new experiences. “I just loved campus life in general. I liked living in the dorms.

There were a number of us who never went home on the weekends and we all bonded,” said Hyde.

On her very first day on campus, she met Rogers from Demarest, New Jersey. Coming from a high school of 2,500 students, Rogers never had the chance to participate in clubs and organizations because they would fill up so quickly. She said, “When I came to Wesley I was used to just signing up

for everything, but then they ended up calling me back for everything, which was a big surprise!” Attending a small college like Wesley finally gave Rogers the chance to get involved. “I ended up doing all kinds of things — meeting a lot of new people and having a lot of fun.”

Although Hyde was living down the hall in the dormitory, she grew closest to Rogers and her roommate Sally Cavanagh. Cavanagh also had an older sister, Sonia, who attended the College so she also came to Wesley with a good sense of its close campus community. “Since I am from suburban Pennsylvania, I kind of liked the idea of Old Main. We lived there and had classes there. I liked knowing that I would know everyone and it was a compact setting,” said Cavanagh.

One of Cavanagh’s fondest memories was working in the dining hall, housed in Richardson Hall. There she served her classmates, faculty and staff members. On one particular occasion, she remembers arguing with the chef to get some more fried chicken for P r e s i d e n t S l a y ba ugh , P r o f e s s o r W e l l s and M iss B r ow n i n g , only to return empty-handed having to explain that ‘They had enough’ according to the chef.”

It was moments like those that Cavanagh now realizes had a very profound effect on her at the time. She said, “Dealing Rovaldia “Val” (Megee) Hyde

directly with the president and professors somehow gave me confidence to speak to people in different places. I somehow turned it into something positive.”

With Wesley being such a small school, the students were used to seeing faculty and staff around campus just as much as they saw their classmates. “It wasn’t just a job to them; it was a lifestyle,” said Hyde. The three ladies recalled fond memories of many of their old mentors, such as M r . a n d Mrs . Kil by and Mr . a n d M r s . Ti t u s . Even the president’s wife, Ger t r u d e S l ayba u g h , played a huge role in teaching the girls social skills. Cavanagh recalled, “Mrs. Slaybaugh was on campus every day stamping and sealing envelopes. She was very serious about her job as a college president’s wife and spent a lot of time at it.” She added, “Mr. Wells was my favorite professor. He was just such a dynamic person. He was very funny but very stern too.”

After graduation, Rogers and her good friend J oa n n e (Sp ital) Fields moved to Washington, D.C. to find jobs.

It was there that Rogers met her husband Joseph and had two daughters, Jill and Deborah. Eventually, she was hired as a kindergarten aid for the Fairfax County School District and later became an assistant librarian. After 28 years working at a job she loved, Rogers retired.

Her family has grown and she now has four grandchildren.

Hyde moved to Pennsylvania where she was married and later earned her bachelor’s degree from Neumann College. She spent most of her career in health Edna “Edie” (Whittle) Rogers care management, working for Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania. Hyde now lives in Seminole, Florida with her husband of 47 years, Carl. Now retired, she enjoys spending time with her granddaughter, working at her church, sewing and reading. She comes back to Delaware

every summer to visit her sister.

Cavanagh eventually moved to California with her husband and children. There she attended California State University, Long Beach. She worked as a probation/parole officer and later came back to Delaware where she became a social worker. She now has four daughters, nine grandsons and one granddaughter.

All three women have taken courses at other colleges since leaving Wesley, but all three agree that Wesley is their college home. “I enjoy being able to list off all those people from Wesley who provided authority and guidance when I needed it, which was probably on a regular basis,” said Cavanagh. “I can’t list off those personalities from Cal State, Long Beach.”

one another of all the fun they had on campus, whether it was the time they had to teach the new basketball coach how to play half court, being left sleeping in the dorm during a fire drill, or swapping gowns and getting all dressed up for the dances.

“I think reunions are the key and as time goes by, it’s become more important for us to return every five years,” said Hyde. “Since this is our 50th, I’m really looking forward to seeing those classmates who Edna “Edi e ” ( W hittl e ) Ro g e r s haven’t been back.”

Perhaps Rogers best summarized the common thread of the Wesley experience when she expressed, “Going to Wesley gave me confidence, a sense of self, new lifelong friendships and knowledge of a greater world outside of my hometown.” Wesley College continues to provide that experience for each student who passes through its halls and will always be a place that alumni can call home. Professor of Art Lon Fluman believes his personal work philosophy has held true in his nearly 50-year career at Wesley College. He reflects on his professional and personal experiences during his tenure, as well as his plans for the future.

“You choose what you do; if you love it, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

During his tenure at Wesley, he has moved through five different office locations on campus and has experienced the ups and downs of a changing institution over the years, learning to “take the good with the bad.” Now in his current studio, located on the upper level of the Wesley Chapel, he reflects on the experiences that have made his long-standing employment at Wesley so special.

Fluman holds a bachelor’s degree from Lycoming College and received his Ed.M. from Temple University. After working at a public school and deciding it was not for him because of too many papers and reports, he began teaching at Wesley in 1964. He did not know much about the institution when he was first hired, despite the fact that at that time, Wesley had a solid reputation as a top two-year college in the area.

“To me, it was just an interesting school. Old Main was a gigantic Victorian building and I still wanted to be able to teach because I love kids,” he commented.

Teaching a wide spectrum of art related subjects at Wesley as well as a vast array of students has not only given Fluman incredible professional experience in his field but also allowed him to share many memories with others. He takes pride in his ability to teach every student as an individual, something he deems important as an educator.

Students that he has taught often remember him for his individualized teaching style as well as his unique personality and sense of humor. A 1986 graduate named Wendy, who took several semesters of art with Fluman, recalled, “Back then, he was a positive, playful teacher who made the class the ‘fun’ one to show up for. He paid attention to detail in my art and taught me some techniques that I use to this day, and the art collection I produced in his classes I still have. What I created was beyond my imagination simply due to his terrific teaching style and vision. In fact, just recently I got in touch with Wesley so I could call him and thank him all these years later…and I did,” she said.

D r. Jeffery Ma sk , professor of religion and philosophy at Wesley, has been fortunate to work with Fluman and witness his teaching firsthand as a student in his class. Mask said, “Lon has generously allowed me to sit in on watercolor classes for the last eight or ten years, and his generosity has only been excelled by the honesty — not to say the brutality

— of his critiques of my painting. I have had the privilege of watching him teach for awhile now. He can find something affirming to say about the most ‘elementary’ piece that a student has done, while still inspiring any student who is willing to make an effort to do better work.” Mask also feels grateful for the deep and lasting friendship he has developed with his colleague. “In some ways, Lon is an acquired taste.

He cultivates a crusty exterior, but a truly sweet soul resides within. I count my friendship with Lon as one of the very best things to have come from my eighteen years at Wesley,” he said.

Fluman looks back with fondness at many memorable and comical moments throughout his career. He recalls his first year at the College when the faculty and the Board of Trustees were invited to dinner with Bishop Lord. “Someone said to me, ‘We are having dinner with the Lord.’ As a new professor, I didn’t know that was the Bishop’s last name so I couldn’t help but imagine dinner with angels and a light show,” Fluman said with a chuckle.

Reminiscing about other experiences, he recalled one evening in the late 60s when he chaperoned a Halloween dance.

“I was there to make sure students weren’t drinking because of the strict alcohol policy.” He began to notice that very few students were leaving the dance and then observed drunken behavior from a growing number of them. “They were drinking an awful lot of cider,” he said, “so I walked over and asked the server for a glass. I took one sip and it made me take a step back!” Fluman discovered that the cider was fermented “hard cider” which had

been purchased from a farmer who most likely didn’t realize the purpose for which it would be used. “I look back on these things and think they were pretty funny now that they are in the past,” he noted.

Fluman describes one of the most interesting aspects of working for the College throughout the decades as the opportunity to teach families. By having a second generation student in his classroom, he has an immediate connection with the student because of his or her parent. “How many professors can say they taught someone and now have that person’s child in the class? I think that is pretty fun,” he stated.

Fluman considers one of Wesley’s strengths to be its liberal arts curriculum. Referencing the Greek belief of education for all aspects of one’s self — the body, mind and soul — he pointed out that “art, music and physical education are really important for a student to have.” He believes that concentrating on only one field can be unhealthy and lead to becoming a narrow minded individual, and that Wesley does a good job in educating the whole person. “Wesley helps students find other outlets to keep their minds open and learn new things,” he said.

Now entering his 47th year of teaching at Wesley, Fluman has seen a number of professors come and go, along with thousands of students who have graduated. What has remained constant, in his opinion, is the sense of caring among faculty and staff and the personal relationships that grow within the campus community. “Wesley really cares about young people.

Maybe you’ll find that other places, maybe not. I think that a lot of times, professors at other schools do more important things outside the actual classroom than working with individual students.” Like many professors at Wesley, Fluman has demonstrated that caring attitude on many occasions when students have come to him with problems. He said, “Whether that problem is academic or personal, students

feel close enough to certain professors that they can confide in them knowing what they say will remain in confidence.”

He added, “A lot of times professors take on the role of a holy person or doctor in student’s eyes because of the respect they are given in their classroom.” Therefore, Fluman takes his role very seriously.

While working at the College, Fluman’s interest in the Eastern culture has grown enormously, especially with the addition of foreign students visiting Wesley. When a group of Japanese students first visited campus in 1995, Fluman mentored one of them, who later returned home and then invited him to visit Japan. Intrigued by the Japanese culture, he ended up visiting the country nine more times after that.

Fluman has become strongly involved with the sister schools who bring groups of their students to Wesley annually and as coordinator of Wesley/Japan programs, he strives to ensure that the visitors have a rewarding and educational experience. Last summer, he and other faculty and staff involved with the program played host to 53 students and four professors from Hachinohe Institute of Technology (HIT) in Japan for the English as a Second Language (ESL) Institute on campus. Eleven Wesley students shared dorm rooms and worked closely with the visiting students. “This partnership gives Wesley students the opportunity to bridge that gap in cultures and discover a different way of life,” he explained.

Having seen the College grow and change over almost five decades, Fluman has been an eyewitness to a good portion of Wesley’s history. Still, he finds it difficult to specifically define the College and sum up his feelings about the institution. “I work for that nebulous something called Wesley College. As soon as you put a label on it, you shrink down the actual size of that nebulous. You can’t see, hear or smell it; it’s a feeling, an emotion that doesn’t have any form of words.”

“People ask me what I am going to do when I retire. I tell them ‘art’ — exactly what I do now,” Fluman stated. Wesley will always be the place where he did what he loves to do and was able to teach and shape the lives of others at the same time. W

G. Neill Kinnamon wrote in to share an update on his life since graduating from Wesley, where he was associate editor of the yearbook, lettered in soccer and appointed to Fairlee and Worton churches in Kent County.

He was in the service from 1952–56, serving cold war standby in the Korean War and also served in Tripoli, Libya and the Middle East. Later, Neill became a member of the American Legion and was received in the Masonic Lodge, becoming Master of the Council and High Priest of the York Rite. He married Hazel Hughes in 1965 and has a daughter and a son.

Dave Allison writes, “I would be interested in knowing if anyone from the class of ’54 is interested in attending homecoming this year for a 55 year reunion. Information from the alumni office is pretty sparse from members of the ’53, ’54 and ’55 classes. Maybe there aren’t too many of us left. Anyway, things are coming along fine at our home in Cutchogue, the far end of Long Island’s North Fork.”

Darryl McCabe recently retired from the golf industry after 45 years of which 22 were as vice president of Delaware Golf Club Management Corporation. He and his wife Deanna (Hitchens) McCabe ’63 have relocated to the Lewes, Delaware area and are looking forward to retirement, traveling and golfing. Kathryn “Kay” Moore Thomas ’31 Believed to be one if not the oldest alumna of Wesley Collegiate Institute, Kathryn “Kay” Moore Thomas ’31 died on May 18, 2009 at the age of 95 while living at the Charlestown Retirement Community in Maryland.

At age 14, Thomas was shipped off 64 miles north to attend Wesley Collegiate Institute (WCI), now known as Wesley College.

As a boarding school, WCI had a good reputation for providing young men and women with a college preparatory education, and all four of her younger siblings followed in her footsteps by attending the institution.

After graduating from WCI in 1931, Thomas received a bachelor’s degree in home economics from the University of Maryland in College Park and also earned a certificate in nutrition. Among her many career experiences was working with staff at a psychiatric hospital in the investigation of new nutritional approaches to assist in the management of certain mental disorders as well as being hired by the McCormick Spice Company to run the testing laboratory to determine the nutritional content of recipes utilizing the McCormick spice. When the supply of certain spices was threatened by global commerce being cut off

by Nazi U-boats during World War II, there was a concerted effort to develop a synthetic vanilla extract as a substitute for vanilla beans which were difficult to obtain from Madagascar. Thomas was asked to spearhead testing efforts using various artificial and synthetic trials made in the chemistry department lab. In between these experiences, she was a Works Projects Administration (WPA) administrator, overseeing 11 sewing rooms on the Eastern shore counties of Maryland.

After the death of her husband of 48 years, David, Thomas audited 30 courses at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and became a familiar “octogenarian face” on the campus. She caught the attention of a sociology graduate student and was the subject of a 25-page ethnography (“A Life History Set in Maryland”) referencing her life and pieces of history she experienced. For example, in the summers of her college years while waitressing at the Shoreham Hotel on the Ocean City boardwalk, she witnessed the August 1933 hurricane that simultaneously closed the inlet near Pope’s Island in the

Chincoteague Bay and created the inlet at Ocean City, Maryland with the Sinepauxent Bay. She also recalled the days of the Great Depression when the hotels that remained open in the resort town offered guests a room, a hot bath and three meals a day for as little as $18.00 a week — an unheard of rate, even at that time.

Thomas was an active volunteer in later years of life, receiving a number of recognitions for her service with the Central Maryland Chapter of the Red Cross. At the age of eighty-nine, she became active in a program to teach literacy to adults and also assisted local pupils in learning how to read. She was recognized by the Baltimore County Public School Board of Education and was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation in 2006 by Governor Erlich and Lt. Governor Steele for her service.

Several years ago, Thomas participated in a Wesley Founder’s Day program focusing on the first sixty years of the institution through 1933. As one of the only living graduates from that era, she took part in a videotaped interview in her residence conducted by two members of the Founder’s Day committee and two students from the Media Arts department. Thomas’s interview provided a historic perspective of campus life in the 1930s and was later presented on campus to faculty, staff and students, who delighted in hearing her vivid remembrances and often humorous stories. “It was a pleasure to have had the opportunity to meet alumna Kay Thomas. For our Founder’s Day presentation, she was a wonderful representative from the era of WCI and brought history to life with her animated storytelling. She was an extraordinary woman who obviously touched many lives throughout her lifetime,” said Alumni Director Amanda Downes.

Thomas is survived by a son, David Moore Thomas, an attorney in Ellicott City, Maryland and her two grandchildren — a grandson David Streeten Thomas and a granddaughter Annie Streeten Thomas, both of Ellicott City.

The 2009 spring season was an exciting time for nine Wesley sports. Three teams — baseball, men’s lacrosse and men’s track & field — advanced to the postseason, and several more set significant school records.

The Wolverines’ track & field program produced its first NCAA Division III All-American when C h r i s D o n isi finished eighth at the NCAA Division III Championships. Donisi leapt 22 feet, 8 inches on his third attempt of the day to earn the honor. Earlier in the year, the sophomore had hit 23 feet, 30 inches at the Mason Dixon Conference Championships to set a new school record. That mark earned him his second conference title of the spring after winning the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) crown.

Keckler’s early season two-hitter was one of three wins Wesley posted over nationally ranked opponents in 2009. The Wolverines took down a ranked York (Pa.) team in the regular season before a second win over the Sea Gulls in the CAC playoffs.

The Wolverines won 11 games to tie a school record and were one of the five most improved teams in the LaxPower computer rankings in Division III. Defenseman K i rk Wa l d i e earned numerous honors. The senior captain was named a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Scholar All-American and played in the USILA North/South AllStar Game. He was joined by teammate J i m Mc C l e a f t , a USILA All-America Honorable Mention. The duo, along with junior attack B ra d S m i t h , gave Wesley three first team All-CAC selections. Two more student athletes — senior J u s t i n T h o mp s o n and junior N i ck P i s aca n o — were named to the second team. Smith became just the third person in program history to score at least 70 points in a season with 36 goals and 34 assists in the year. Waldie set the Wolverines’ career record for ground balls and

caused turnovers, while McCleaft wrote his name all over the goalkeeping record book.

All the honors came on the heels of a trip to the ECAC Division III Metro/ South Championship Tournament.

The offense racked up 183 goals scored and 247 points to set season scoring records. Seniors Ja de Ma rtin and L e s l i e C e r v e n ka led the way at that end of the field with record setting efforts of their own. Martin ended her career with 167 career points, more than any other

Wolverine, and Cervenka’s 56 career assists are also a new Wesley standard.

Cervenka also tied her own record with a five assist game in 2009.

Wesley scored 22 goals in one game to set a new school record against Savannah College of Art & Design. In addition, the offense set new marks with 32 free position goals and six in one game. The Wolverines’ 187 draw controls were the most in a season for a Wesley team.

Not to be outdone, the defense tied a school record with a pair of shutout victories. All-CAC pick B r o oke Bennett was again a defensive standout. The junior tied single game Wesley records with 11 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. The team’s seven wins also tied for the second most in a single season in the program’s short history.

While the 2008-09 year was successful on the field and in the classroom, Wesley’s student athletes were also a hit in the community. Several Wolverine teams participated in volunteer projects over the past year.

In the fall, members of the Wesley baseball team served as coaches in the Kent County Parks & Recreation Tee-Ball League. Sophomores J am e s Ov e r s t r e e t and K e v i n Murphy and junior C o l i n War n e r joined former Wolverine standout Dan B u n n i o n in the dugout, each coaching one of the league’s four squads.

The women’s lacrosse team traveled to each game of the World Series at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia to volunteer as part of Major League Baseball’s Team Greening program, which organizes and supports the many environmentally-sensitive practices put in place by the various baseball clubs. They even appeared on the “Dancing with Ellen” segment of the October 28 episode of “The Ellen Degeneres Show” for their efforts.

Meanwhile, members of the men’s lacrosse team were busy volunteering their time in setting up and administering a United Cerebral Palsy Lacrosse Tournament. The event, which took place November 2, raised funds to provide scholarships for children and young adults with Cerebral Palsy to attend camp and play lacrosse.

Just a few months later, the men’s basketball program sponsored a clinic for the Banneker Elementary Special Olympics, running the team through basic instruction and skill building. The Wesley team also put on a dunk contest for the children. “The kids were so excited,” said Laurie

Moorman, a basic skills teacher and Special Olympics program director at Banneker Elementary. “They’ll talk about this the rest of the year.”

The Wesley football team also reached out to the community. In October and again in February, players traveled to local elementary schools to read to children. The team visited Fairview Elementary in Dover this fall to take part in the “Jumpstart Read for the Record” reading program.

Head Coach mike Dra s s and Coach St e v e A z za n e s i joined the players for the event at Hartly Elementary. The football coaching staff as a whole has encouraged the team members’ involvement with the reading programs, recognizing that it is not only beneficial for the elementary school students, but is also gratifying to the players. “It’s great to have the guys go out and get involved with the local schools,” Drass noted. “Jen Plews [wife of Wolverines’ Special Teams Coordinator Shawn P l ew s ] teaches at Fairview Elementary and mentioned something to Shawn and it seemed like a great thing to get involved in.”

Both the women’s basketball team and the volleyball team helped raise money for breast cancer awareness this year.

The women’s basketball squad participated in a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association “Pink Zone” contest during their season, while the volleyball team took part in a “Dig for the Cure” contest earlier in the fall. The Wolverines’ volleyball team also ran the first Kent and Sussex County USA Volleyball program from December through May. This program served 60 residents of the two counties.

events this year have demonstrated how the Wesley athletics programs have worked together to benefit important causes and serve the local community. During the month of March, Wesley College hosted Andrew Geyer SADD Day. The event was held in remembrance of former student athlete Andrew Geyer, who was tragically killed by a suspected drunk driver over the winter. With home events in softball, baseball, men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse on March 21, the Wolverines took the opportunity to raise awareness of drunk driving at this free event with a drunk driving simulator on campus.

Student athletes from various teams collected donations, which were split between the Students Against Drunk Driving organization and the Andrew Geyer Endowed Scholarship Fund.

Wesley’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee came together in April to run the Dover Parks & Recreation Easter Egg Hunt at Dover Park. In addition, many of Wesley’s athletic programs run camps and clinics for local youth during their offseason.

Currently, camps are offered in baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball.

Larry Beavers recently signed with the nfl as a carolina panther When fans look at the roster for the Carolina Panthers, the column for the players’ colleges reads like a list of who’s who in Division I college football. Players from perennial powers like Penn State, Miami, Virginia Tech, Georgia and Florida State litter the page. But there is one player whose school jumps off the page more than others as it is not one with which many Panthers fans are familiar: Wesley College. That player is a rookie free agent wide receiver, Lar r y B ea v e r s .

Trying to figure out just who Beavers is, the local media and fans have perhaps talked more about the speedster from Division III than any of the Panthers’ high paid draft picks.

While Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler on ESPN’s “College Gameday” were discussing the alma maters of many of the other rookies trying to make the team last fall, Beavers was doing what he does best — outrunning opposing defenses on kick and punt returns as well as playing wide receiver.

Stats that look like they are straight out of a video game brought scouts from 28 NFL teams to Dover to look at the Wesley standout. Beavers averaged 39.5 yards per kick return and 29.2 yards per punt return. He brought back five kicks for touchdowns and added three more on punt returns. For good measure, he averaged 19.9 yards per catch and scored six times as a wide receiver. He ended his career with 13 combined kick and punt return touchdowns, more than any player in NCAA history — regardless of division.

Beavers drew more attention after he ran a 4.37 in the 40-yard dash at the University of Delaware’s Pro Day, but there is a video on YouTube of him racing to a 4.28 during a workout at Miller Stadium on Wesley’s campus. The native of Annapolis, Maryland put his speed on display with the Wolverines’ track & field team too. He posted school records in the 100-meter (10.74 seconds), 110-meter hurdles (15.33) and 200-meter (21.62). His times in both the 100 and 200 qualified him for the Division III NCAA Championships.

One question scouts asked, however, was why the senior’s receiving yards and receptions went down from his junior year. But Wesley Head Coach M i ke Dr as s had a simple explanation. “He had eight return touchdowns, so we had less offensive possessions. Plus, when he didn’t score, he shortened the field on the possessions we did have. There were just less yards for the offensive to cover because of what he did on special teams,” said Drass.

Throughout the spring, the Carolina Panthers showed particular interest in Beavers. They went as far as to send Special Teams Coordinator Danny Crossman to spend a day with him on campus. The interest was mutual, as Carolina was particularly attractive to Beavers for one important reason. The team’s return man from 2008, Mark Jones, had signed a free agent deal with the Tennessee Titans, leaving the job up for grabs.

While Beavers’s name didn’t get called during the draft, several teams dialed his number afterwards with interest in bringing him to camp. “Kansas City, Cincinnati — they all wanted to [sign me],” Beavers told Mike Cranston of the Associated Press earlier this summer. “But I wanted to be here [at Carolina] from day one. There wasn’t a choice to go anywhere else.”

So Beavers was off to Carolina to chase every football player’s dream, a spot on an NFL roster. He was also in exclusive company among Division III players. Only he and Wheaton’s Pete Ittersagen were signed immediately after the draft.

Beavers caught the eye of the Panthers’ established receiving duo almost immediately. Muhsin Muhammad got right to the point, telling Cranston, “He’s definitely fast.”

All-Pro Steve Smith was quoted by Cranston as saying, “I think if you’re here and you have a uniform, it doesn’t matter what school you went to. Some of the best first-round draft picks generally have flaked out.”

Because the Panthers and Beavers identified his biggest weakness to be his game as a wide receiver, the rookie is working hard to improve. Members of the Wesley Athletics staff went to Charlotte to watch a day of mini-camp when Beavers made a diving catch, drawing cheers from the coaches on the sidelines. A week later, Beavers proved Muhammad right when he ran the team’s fastest 40-yard dash time.

Aiming for a spot on the roster, he returned to the Panthers for training camp on August 3.

Beavers is just one of three former Wesley student athletes on professional teams. N o r ma n Ba u e r is currently playing on the offensive line for the Albany Firebirds of the Arena Football League 2. Defensive end B r ya n Ro b i n s o n , who was in training camp with the Arizona Cardinals last summer, is currently playing in AFL2 with the Manchester Wolves. W

To preserve that same spirit among future Wesley College students, the Andrew Joseph Geyer Endowed Scholarship was established this year in memory of the outstanding honors student and golf team captain. Geyer, a 22 year-old from Milford, Delaware,

died February 23 after being struck by a car while visiting with friends in West Virginia.

The scholarship will be awarded for the first time this fall to a student who resides in Delaware and maintains a 3. 2 or higher GPA. “I am honored to know that his memory will live on at Wesley. My hope is that this scholarship will help someone who has worked just as hard as Andrew and has been able to give back to their

community,” said Gladys.

Since Andrew’s tragic death, less than three months shy of his graduation day, many friends and family have honored his memory through contributions to the scholarship. During the May Commencement ceremony, Gladys accepted a posthumous Bachelor of Arts in Political Science degree on his behalf. Also during the ceremony, D r . Willi am J o h n s t o n , president of Wesley College, announced that Wesley’s Student Government Association pledged a gift of $2,000 towards the endowed scholarship.

This pledge exemplifies the proactive campus community that Gladys and her family are grateful that Andrew experienced during his time at Wesley. She expressed, “The support has always been wonderful. It made Andrew feel more at home at Wesley.”

Each year, an estimated 90 percent of students who attend Wesley College receive various types of financial aid, including scholarships. Among these scholarship awards, the Andrew Joseph Geyer Endowed Scholarship Fund aims to ensure that a Wesley College degree remains within the reach of qualified undergraduates who meet the criteria set forth within the scholarship guidelines.

Having served almost forty years at Wesley College, T e r r y Higgins , faculty emeritus and former environmental science professor, knows the importance of giving back to the institution that played such a significant role in his life. While completing his master’s degree at Edinboro University, he received a call from Wesley’s president, Dr . Ro be r t Parker , inviting him to interview for a faculty position at the College. Surprised, since he had not applied for the position, Higgins graciously accepted the invitation, interviewed and agreed to join the faculty in what would become the ideal career opportunity. The native of northwestern Pennsylvania began his career at Wesley in 1961 and served as a faculty member until his retirement in 2000.

Throughout his years of teaching, Higgins collected many fond memories. Serving over 8,000 undergraduates during his tenure, Higgins was always impressed with the quality of individuals that attended Wesley. “Just to see them grow and develop, that’s the most gratifying thing you can witness,” said Higgins. “I had the unique opportunity to teach and react with, and help grow, some of the brightest and best that our nation can produce.”

Higgins considers many of his former colleagues at Wesley to have been essential in nurturing and refining him into

who he is today. Senior professors including L o u i e Wells , M r . a n d M r s . K i lb y , M r . S t e wa r t , D i ck T i tus and President Parker all had an integral part in mentoring the young newcomer in his first years as a faculty member.

Higgins attributes his long stint at the College to these and other professors including E l a i n e W r i g h t , Sa m and Ma r i l y n J o h n s o n , B a r r y Re be r , J i m W e n tw orth and R o n S t a r n e s who made the Wesley experience so comfortable for him.

Knowing how Wesley so positively influenced his life, Higgins is eager to reciprocate the favor. He stated, “It’s the old biblical quotation — ‘To those who have been given much, much is expected.’” Higgins decided to include Wesley College in his will to aid in securing Wesley’s legacy as a liberal church-related college for years to come.

Higgins has an additional connection to Wesley College in that his three children, Matthew, Rebecca and Kirsten, are all environmental science graduates of the College. Each has continued to build a successful career in the environmental field and has shown appreciation to Wesley through various annual gifts. The Higgins family demonstrates their testament to the Wesley mission by giving back to the College and its programs. They often attend College-sponsored events, including Homecoming. Youngest daughter K i r s t e n H i g g i n s ’ 9 8 is now proudly serving on the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Higgins advised, “Giving is each person’s prerogative. No four year education is perfect, but education — both formal education in the classroom and what one gets as being a member of a college environment — is the one thing in life that cannot be taken from you. One needs Professor Higgins guides students through a lab experiment in 1961. to be very thankful for the opportunity for education and sacrifices people made for that education — not only parents and family but everyone involved with the college.”
