WELCOME

letter from the preSident & ceo Welcome to the winter edition of the Windsor-essex regional chamber of commerce’s Business Briefs! at our 138th annual General meeting and luncheon on november 4, we heard from our featured guest speaker flavio Volpe, president, automotive parts manufacturers canada’s association (apma), national association representing oem producers of parts, equipment, tools, supplies and services for the worldwide automotive industry. Volpe spoke on “the time is now for an auto Strategy”. the Windsor-essex regional chamber of commerce is leading the national campaign to get government to provide more incentives to lure business to this country, which includes creating an auto strategy. the issue of an auto strategy was one that was brought up at the first-ever Windsor-essex policy & Solutions forum in may. the need for an auto strategy was a resolution put forward by the Windsor-essex regional chamber of commerce and was adopted by the ontario chambers of commerce as its “signature resolution” for canadian chamber aGm and adopted by the entire chamber membership across canada at the canadian chamber aGm in September.

TECH CORNER

Is the Cloud right for your Business? As a regional IT Service Provider, I’m often asked if the “cloud” makes sense for my clients’ businesses. The answer can be a complicated discussion. There are many factors that need to be considered before moving any application or service to the cloud, let alone moving everything to the cloud. The most popular trend in our client base has been the movement of email to the cloud, Microsoft’s Office 365 trending as the leader in the space, at least in my client base. The reasons for this vary from organization to organization, but the trend tends to be focused around Business Continuity. In the event that they have any issues with their traditional onsite infrastructure, the way they communicate with most of their customers is still accessible. There are more and more businesses that are evaluating moving everything to the cloud, but they are typically not doing this to save costs, but are looking for the increased redundancy and resiliency that is often not cost effective to do when spreading the costs over a small user community. Disaster Recovery is often one of the benefits of the cloud, most cloud providers provide their customers with the ability to failover their environment from one data centre to another.

The cloud changes the way you need to look at security. If half of your environment is in house, and the other half in the cloud, having the right systems in place to protect your digital assets becomes more important than ever. The cloud also often changes the way your people tend to interact with their line of business applications, especially when these applications are not web based, introducing new training requirements for your staff. For more information on if the Cloud makes sense for your business, please contact Adam Davis, President & CEO of Next Dimension. Adam currently sits on the board of directors for the Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. Next Dimension is a regional IT Service Provider with offices in Windsor, London, Waterloo and Detroit. adavis@nextdimensioninc.com
