Inspect your ATM before withdrawing money The Centurion Record recently reported that there has been an increase in card skimming and related fraud at ATMs in the area. According to the report, criminals are placing devices into the ATM card slot which then read a card’s sensitive information – then used for card cloning. The criminals then use the cloned cards to withdraw money from their victim’s accounts. “The card skimmer will withdraw an amount shortly before midnight and then wait a few minutes. A second withdrawal is then made on the renewed daily limit,” the report said. Because most people are asleep at this time they only find out about the stolen money when they wake up the next morning and check their bank messages. ATM card skimming The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) has warned citizens to be vigilant when using their cards at ATMs so as to avoid card skimming. Card skimming devices are used to copy card information on the magnetic strip when a customer inserts the card into the ATM. These devices typically sit on top of the ATM card slot, and are designed to ensure that they blend in with the “look and feel” of ATMs, making them difficult to detect. The following image in the top corner of this article illustrates how card skimming at an ATM typically works. Stealing your PIN at an ATM There are many ways which criminals can steal your PIN at an ATM – looking over your shoulder, installing a small camera, and even installing a fake keypad. The first two are widely used in South Africa, but according to Sabric they have only recorded one incident where a fake keypad was recovered from an ATM. However, just like with card skimming devices, anyone withdrawing money from an ATM should be on the lookout for shoulder surfers, small cameras, and fake keypads.

Staatsrede 2019: Drome en nagmerries
Ons missie
Dit is nie ’n droom, soos dié van Martin-Luther King jr., dat Suid-Afrikaners sal beoordeel word aan die inhoud van hul karakter en nie hul velkleur nie. Nie eens vir tenderdoeleindes nie. Nee, die president se droom is vol lugkastele in die Chinese styl, werkskepping wat uit die lug uit val en die Suid-Afrikaanse vervaardigingsektor wat magies vauit die as verrys. Dit is opmerklik dat sy staatsrede baie sulke drome bevat het – maar min of geen konkrete planne om daar te kom nie. Opmerklik, maar nie verbasend nie. Daar is soveel dinge wat noukeurig beplan, uiteengesit en voor begroot moet word in hierdie oefening, dat dit nie net onmoontlik is vir uitdruk in een toespraak nie – maar dat dit selfs te veel is vir een mens, of selfs een staat, om sulke planne in die eerste plek te beraam. Dit is daarom dat president Ramaphosa net met ’n glimlag op sy gesig en ’n droom in sy kop voor die land kon staan. Mens kan hom natuurlik nie kwalik neem dat hy droom nie, maar die tragiek hiervan is dat die president se drome dalk juis die privaat sektor se planne sal belemmer. President Ramaphosa se toespraak getuig van heelwat aktiewe ingrepe deur die staat – so asof dit uitsluitlik die staat se verantwoordelikheid is om te bepaal waarheen Suid-Afrika op pad is. Die president het heel korrek opgelet dat die privaat sektor se aktiwiteit tans onderdruk is. Hy het egter, in plaas van raaksien dat dit juis van sy eie regering se beleide is waaraan hierdie gebrek aan aktiwiteit te wyte is, voorgeneem om sélf die werk te doen. Die ironie is dat baie van die president se drome – en die fondse wat nodig sal wees om dit te verwesenlik – nie net die privaat sektor se kapitaal opslurp nie, maar hom juis verdring van daardie areas waar hy eintlik die beste geplaas is om werklik ’n verskil te maak. Dit is deur die besigheidseienaar se planne vir uitbreiding wat werkgeleenthede geskep word. Dit is deur keurige verbruikers se planne wat produkte se kwaliteit en bekostigbaarheid verbeter. Versigtige ouers ondersteun goeie skole, en spoor slegter skole aan om beter te word. Maar een ding moet jy weet en glo, Hy luister altyd, Hy reageer soms stadig, maar Hy maak nooit foute nie. Oppas vir ander se opinies, oppas as mense "sien" namens jou, dis nie altyd van die Here af nie. In sulke tye gaan soek mense tekens, maar die Here sê ons moenie, dis ongelowiges wat dit doen. Soms vertrou ons dan op onsself en maak foute. Kan jy nog wag? Nog 'n rukkie? Dalk nog lank? Is jy bereid om Sy besluit onomwonde te aanvaar? Al is dit seer of nie wat jy wil hoor nie. Burnout is now an official medical diagnosis The World Health Organisation (WHO) has officially recognised burnout as a medical diagnosis. Following an update by the group published at the end of May 2019, the condition now appears in the organisation’s International Classification of Diseases, or the ICD-11, in the section on problems related to employment or unemployment. “Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualised as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,” the WHO said. “(It) refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life”. if you think you might be suffering burnout, ask yourself the following questions: Has anyone close to you asked you to cut down on your work? America’s trade war with China means US firm Google has indefinitely suspended its business relationship with Chinese smartphone brand Huawei. This means Huawei will no longer be able to offer new customers access to Google’s Android operating system while current Huawei customers will not be able to download future Android system updates. As the local mobile content and applications industry representative body, South Africa’s Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association (WASPA) said it keen to help educate consumers here on the impact of Google’s move and propose future solutions for Africa. “Huawei users in South Africa should rest assured – for now – that the company will continue to provide after-sales service on its handsets. Security and app updates will also continue to be pushed out to Huawei smartphones to at least 19 August 2019,” WASPA said. On long-term solutions to the current Huawei quandary, and similar future ones like it, WASPA believes local mobile users should continue to enjoy global mobile technology options, while also supporting the development of African-made mobile technology. Should further information be required; Vodacom, MTN and Cell C Customer Care are all available on 135 dialed from cellphones connected to their respective mobile networks. Telkom Mobile Customer Care can be reached on 180 dialed from a Telkom mobile handset, WASPA said.

Method Prepare a basic beef, lamb or chicken stew. Measure the flour, salt and herbs into a mixing bowl. Grind on some braai spice, using your discretion as to the amount. Sars clarifies who must file an income tax return The SA Revenue Service (Sars) says many taxpayers have incorrectly interpreted the criteria for taxpayers who may not be required to file an income tax return. On Sunday, it issued this clarification: 1. What tax filing season is - and isn’t - about. Tax season is about filing an income tax return to ensure that an individual taxpayer’s tax affairs are in order. Most salaried taxpayers have already paid tax through Pay As You Earn (PAYE), which is deducted from their salary by an employer, which pays the deduction over to Sars. Taxpayers who earn below the filing threshold may have to file a return, because they need to declare other sources of income, such as rental income or business income, or to claim tax-related deductions such as medical expenses not covered by their medical scheme, retirement annuity contributions and travel expenses. Sars reconciles what was paid over by the employer with what the taxpayer declares on their income tax return. After this reconciliation, the assessment or tax calculation may result in the taxpayer having to pay additional tax to Sars, or be due a refund, or neither. 2.The threshold of R500 000 and the criteria for those not required to file. The threshold refers to those who are not required to file a tax return; it does not refer to who do not have to pay tax. The filing threshold is not the same as the tax threshold to pay tax or have PAYE deducted. You have already paid tax through the PAYE deducted from your salary if you earn more than R79 000 a year for those under 65 years for the 2020 tax year. The threshold of R500 000 is not the only condition. All the following conditions must also apply before you can cross yourself out for filing a tax return: * Your remuneration is paid from one employer or one source (you must file if you changed jobs during the tax year, or have more than one employer or income source). 3. Sars tax calculations. Sars will perform a tax calculation for those taxpayers not required to file as though they did file. This will provide the taxpayer with written confirmation that they are in good standing with Sars. 4. Tax filing dates. * eFiling opens on July 1 and closes on December 4. * Branch filing opens on August 1 and closes on October 31. .
